Ibiza is known for legendary parties led by world-famous DJs that attract revelers from around the globe during the summer
But there’s more to the Spanish island than endless nightlife and crowded summer beaches
Those seeking a more tranquil escape will uncover the other side of Ibiza in the spring and early fall
once the revelers have gone home and the clubs have entered their deep repose
While many Ibiza visitors are distracted with all-night dance parties, active souls at the Nobu Hotel can join three-night holistic hiking retreats in April, May, June, September and October, where invigorating hikes and wellness experiences offer relaxation in a natural setting. The hotel also provides yoga sessions at sunrise and sunset, held against the peaceful backdrop of Talamanca Bay.
Here’s a guide to what to do in Ibiza on a three-day escape beyond the clubs and commotion.
Inside the stylish and sophisticated Nobu
a beach club with straw huts and comfortable loungers where you’ll settle into the Ibiza groove
roam the boardwalk to the right until you get to a street crossing
continue your hour-long journey along Passeig Joan Carles I
before taking Avinguda de Santa Eulària des Riu
which will lead you to the heart of the city
Take a walk around the fortified old town of Dalt Vila
Make your way up to Dalt Vila by crossing the city gates and go to the medieval castle for hilltop views of the city below
get lost in the maze of laneways and plazas housing eclectic international restaurants and shops selling clothing exemplifying Ibiza’s bohemian party style
Once the Dalt Vila visit is over, return to the hotel for an unforgettable meal at Nobu Ibiza Bay
you will have worked up enough of an appetite to enjoy the omakase menu that changes regularly
you shouldn’t miss the freshwater eel nigiri
the world-famous black cod with miso and the beef toban yaki
Pair them with the kaffir lime and lychee martini or one of Nobu’s other signature cocktails
Your second day should begin with breakfast at Chambao by the Beach
inside by the scrumptious buffet or at the sand-covered terrace
letting you live out your barefoot luxury dreams
Don’t leave without trying the Matsuhisa Benedict (freshly poached eggs on crispy tofu with snow crab
Finish on a sweet note with a chocolate-filled ensaimada
a local spiral-shaped pastry sprinkled with powdered sugar
While wine tasting may not have been on your Ibiza-activity radar, the island has a burgeoning scene with five wineries and nearly 90 acres of vineyards. Pay a visit to Ibizkus
a winery established in 2007 that follows a sustainable winemaking approach
which includes hand-picking the grapes and employing dry-farming techniques
This style of farming allows the roots of the plants to grow deep into the ground
resulting in more minerals and less acidity in the wine
On the main road between Ibiza and Santa Eulalia
Ibizkus is open year-round and offers wine tastings at noon on Mondays and Saturdays
and two seatings (noon and 5 p.m.) from Tuesday to Friday
This bakery sells two local delicacies: flaó
a cheesecake made from fresh goat and sheep cheese with a hint of spearmint
a bell-pepper tart that some consider the precursor to pizza
If you’re visiting around the beginning or end of summer
you may run into a fair with stalls dotting this area
selling clothing exuding Ibiza chic and food from around the world near the aforementioned Restaurant Street
A Bes Talamanca meal is a great way to end a day
Keep walking toward the beach and grab a seat facing the sea at Iza Restaurant Bar to watch the world go by with a cocktail in hand
Finish your Santa Eulalia expedition with a stroll by the river
a popular activity for families with children
Next on the agenda is some well-deserved R&R back at the hotel, whether on a Balinese bed by the pool, at the pool bar or in the hammam at the Ibiza Bay Spa by Six Senses
End your day on a high note at the nearby Bes Talamanca for some of the freshest seafood on the island
Housed in a white manor with bright blue doors along the wooden walkway behind the hotel
this restaurant serves a memorable salt-baked seabass
You won’t regret ordering the shrimp ceviche marinated Peruvian style with leche de tigre or a uramaki sushi roll as well
the restaurant hosts flamenco shows on Saturdays around 9:30 p.m
consider visiting a cala (cove or bay) if you still have time before making your way to the airport
but the calas’ clear turquoise hues and natural beauty are undeniably great spots for photos
Cala Blanca and Cala Llonga are all just a 15- to 20-minute cab ride away from the luxury hotel
Cabs tend to arrive quickly but allow enough time for a leisurely trip since the calas are north of the hotel and the airport is south
A 22-year-old Dutchman was arrested at Ibiza airport, trying to enter the island with two suitcases filled to the brim with ecstasy pills. It is not clear how the man slipped through Dutch customs with the 50-kilogram load of drugs, RTL Nieuws reports.
The Spanish authorities are extra alert on Ibiza at the moment because it is the start of the club and festival season. They noticed the 22-year-old Dutchman because he was traveling alone, but had two suitcases that were both heavier than expected for a tourist. When they opened the suitcases, they were filled to the brim with ecstasy pills, covered only by the zip-up partition in the suitcases.
The Spanish police estimate that there were over 163,000 pills in the suitcases. They appear to all be ecstasy, though some had a “2CB” logo printed on them. 2CB is an abbreviation for the drug “tusi,” which is very popular in exclusive clubs in Spain.
The Spanish authorities consider tusi to be more dangerous than ecstasy. The drug consists of a varying mix of MDMA, ketamine, and cocaine, sometimes supplemented with methamphetamine and caffeine. Because the proportions vary, people who take tusi don’t know in advance what the effect will be. For that reason, the police and judiciary are harsher on tusi sellers, makers, and smugglers.
According to RTL, the 50 kilograms of drugs could get the Dutchman between 3 and 9 years in prison. The street value of the drugs was estimated between 1.3 and 3 million euros.

A British tourist has died at a popular Ibiza hotel after suffering a cardiac arrest in her room
The 33-year-old woman was staying at Ibiza Rocks Hotel in the party resort of San Antonio where she died on Wednesday
Paramedics and police rushed to the three-star resort and spent around 40 minutes trying to revive her but she died at the scene, the same newspaper reported.
She reportedly had a cardioverter defibrillator implant, which is used to monitor the heartbeat and treat abnormal heart rhythms.
It came just days after a 19-year-old Italian tourist plunged to her death from the fourth storey of the same hotel.
It was reported that she was locked out of her hotel room and tried reaching it through a shared balcony but lost her footing and fell.
Last year, a teenage British tourist died after falling from a different hotel balcony in the early hours of the morning.
She fell from the sixth floor of the four-star Hotel Vibra District, just 300m away from the beach in San Antonio, Ibiza.
The Independent has contacted the Spanish Civil Guard for further information.

Marc-Antoine Oliver of France and Ana-Marcela Cunha of Brazil come into Ibiza as the defending Men’s and Women’s Overall Open Water Swimming World Cup winners from the 2024 tour
Both Cunha and Olivier secured their titles on the final day of competition last year in NEOM (KSA)
it was her record-extending seventh overall World Cup crown
Olivier—a 2024 World and European silver medallist—called winning the overall World Cup his “redemption moment” after missing out on a medal at his “home” Olympics, the Paris 2024 Games
With World and European silver medals already secured in 2024

Max Eberl played bad cop for the Bayern Munich brass…
When it was reported that Bayern Munich players had already planned a trip to Ibiza after the RB Leipzig match
it rubbed some fans the wrong way — especially after the squad would only go on to play RB Leipzig to a 3-3 draw
even though board member for sport Max Eberl had to put the kibosh on the trip
“I haven’t thought about that for a second. We had a tough game against Leipzig to prepare. Maybe after [the title] I could have an opinion, but before that there was no discussion about a party. We’re not champions yet, so we have to wait,” Kompany said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia)
When asked about if the monumental goal differential advantage has him already feeling like a champion
Kompany was not ready to take any pats on the back just yet
“That was a discussion within the coaching staff after the game
I’m someone who says there’s still a 0.1% chance that we don’t win it
so we have to do our job and wait until the last moment
but I want to keep the focus and win the remaining two games.”

Don’t count your chickens and all of that..
According to a report from Tz journalists Philipp Kessler and Mano Bonke (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), some Bayern Munich players have a private jet ready to go on Sunday if the squad clinches the Bundesliga this weekend:
Bayern players are planning a trip to Ibiza by private jet on Sunday if they secure the title tomorrow
They’re planning to stay there for two nights and enjoy a short title-winning vacation before returning to prepare for Gladbach
The trip could still be cancelled in case of a poor performance in Leipzig
but it has already been approved by the people in charge
now the boys will have some incentive to finish the job

More make for a beautiful appetizer at Ibiza
It’s been six years since Ibiza Kitchen opened in Chappaqua
and despite Covid and all the woes of the current restaurant industry
it remains one the best modern Spanish restaurants in America
I’ve been familiar with owner Ignacio Blanco’s ascendency since he opened Meigas in TriBeCa twenty-five years ago
has always been in the avant-garde without toppling over into the kind of modernist gimmickry fostered by Ferran Adrià
the menu has become more refined for a suburban clientele that includes Chappaqua residents Bill and Hillary Clinton
author of Sunset in a Glass: Adventures of a Food and Wine Road Warrior in Spain
contends Ibiza is the closest to the finest restaurants he’s been to in Spain
where Martinez traveled extensively after cooking stints in New York
The modest room and bar are a pleasantly lighted backdrop to the colors of the food and drinks served at Ibiza
are thoroughly grounded in Iberian food culture and adamantly based on seasonality
Best thing to do is leave the meal up to Blanco and the chef to decide
because the night’s specials are among the best on the menu
You may begin simply with a platter of charcuteries including Iberian ham
then sautéed hen of the woods mushrooms with a citrusy carrot puree
If you love Spanish ceviche they serve briny wild shrimp and scallops with an onion pickle and gazpacho
packed with wild mushrooms then fried and served with a velvety aïoli
like arroz de acelgas y ajos tiernos con gamba rayada y jamon Iberico
Fat and silky is the pancetta Iberico sliders with shallots
Black cod with savory Spanish herbs and seasonings show seafood cookery at its best at Ibiza
Beautiful black cod comes with roasted tomatoes and Bell peppers
the chuleton ribeye with fingerling potatoes and charred romesco sauce has an array of flavors and textures
Bread pudding with strawberries and créme fraîche
Desserts are traditional but boosted in flavors via refined technique
so cremosochocolate with crème fraîche ice cream; chocolate mousse; a rich Basque “burnt” cheesecake; and a lush bread pudding lavished with a sour strawberry sauce
all every bit as delightful as all else on the menu
The wine list is rich in Spanish offerings that show the range of what is currently imported
and there is a long list of specialty cocktails from the handsome bar where you might also nurse a glass of Sherry
but few authentic Spanish restaurants exist
Anyone in Manhattan seeking the latter can be in Chappaqua by car or train in an hour

The thing that might surprise you about Ibiza is the quiet
there are pockets of tranquillity all over the island
Walking along the nature trail between and behind two of its most famous beaches – Es Cavallet and Ses Salines – you hear nothing but the chirp of cicadas and the soft whisper of the Mediterranean

and actually did learn a lot that could be used in the book
But I also saw problems I’d never noticed in my hedonistic youth
Ibiza is multifaceted and has always attracted people wanting different kinds of escape
Years before ravers discovered ecstasy and the eclectic unifying music played by DJ Alfredo at Amnesia in the late 80s
artists and intellectuals such as Walter Benjamin flocked here to flee oppression
Stars from the golden age of Hollywood such as Grace Kelly
Liz Taylor and Laurence Olivier found it a safe haven
Cormac McCarthy spent his hippy years on the island
Joni Mitchell came and wrote some of her seminal Blue album while staying here and on the neighbouring island of Formentera
Bob Marley danced the night away at the long-gone Glory’s nightclub after playing a famous concert here
featured trips and local tips for your next break
as well as the latest deals from Guardian Holidays
which tilt the equilibrium like a gorilla on a seesaw
the impact of holidaymakers was relatively positive
but many do not: having people sleeping in the woods or in their cars before going to work at restaurants with three-figure minimum spends is not sustainable

Photograph: Gonzalo Azumendi/AlamyThe Ibiza seen from the yachts of Jeff Bezos and Leonardo DiCaprio is clearly a very different one from the Ibiza seen by a struggling family living out of a campervan in San Antonio
thanks to them being accidentally imported with the fully grown olive trees ordered to decorate the gardens of villas
and I am trying to support them any way I can
Timeless and totally 21st centuryI realised I had an opportunity to include these issues in my book
to draw attention to the wonder of this place
while trying to convey its unique magic to those who roll their eyes at the very idea of Ibiza
I knew I had an opportunity to highlight the need to be aware of the issues here
how the places we visit don’t just change us
So it becomes important to let beauty inspire us to tread gently
think about the finite resources of small islands
Ibiza is a sacred place of light and magic
We who love it have a duty to help it stay that way

offenders could also face being reported to their country’s embassy
Tourists travelling to Ibiza could be hit with fines of up to £2,580 if they break recently introduced rules relating to consumption of alcohol in the popular San Antonio area
Offenders could also face being reported to their country’s embassy
Although these alcohol restrictions do not affect bars
they do affect party boats within one nautical mile of San Antonio
The rules were introduced to crack down on “anti-social behaviour” and “excessive tourism” in tourist hotspots
The Balearic Islands Tourism Council press officer Luis Pomar said in 2020
when an initial round of restrictions were implemented
that it was hoped the laws would not last forever but that it was necessary to “instil in people how to behave”
these new rules will remain in place until 2027
Shortly after last May's announcement, Ibiza locals held a protest against overtourism amid increased tensions in Balearic and Canary Islands.

For chill Balearic vibes on a peaceful stretch of coastline—but close enough to the Ibiza-grade action that you don’t feel like you’re missing out
Don’t rely on first impressions here: a blockish
is the focal point of the hotel: all drinking and dining spaces look onto it
This is where you’ll end up spending most of your time
surrounded by young European families splashing about and beautiful
bronzed couples on loungers with giant sun hats and colorful cocktails exerting themselves only long enough to motion for a top-up
if you’re looking for a bit of buzz (it is Ibiza
and Nikki Beach next door for more committed partying—none of which prevents you from pursuing a peaceful break
Which is to say that this hotel is a little bit of everything; and in its case
ME is one of three Ibiza properties run by Melia Hotels
a chain with more than 350 hotels and resorts in 35 countries
Melia Ibiza that opened in 2024 about an 8-minute drive south of ME
simply outfitted option by Cala Pinet beach
attracting both the fashionable set and young families to its boho-chic vibe and panoramic views of the ocean
The 149 rooms range from entry-level cozy-sized rooms all the way up to suites with private pools
We stayed in the Studio ME+ room with a terrace that had stunning views on both sides of the Mediterranean and the pool
In addition to an open-plan bathroom with a freestanding bath by a window and a walk-in rain shower (toiletries are by C.O
there was a large walk-in wardrobe area and a small dining section
is minimalist (to let the sea views reign supreme) with bleached wood floors and crisp white linens
I was nervous about party sounds drifting in to disturb the peace
but was thrilled to note the room was soundproofed
book the hotel’s Ultimate ME+ Suite with its own 24-hour dedicated ‘Aura Manager’
and an expansive terrace overlooking the bay
is the standout meal here where options exist for everyone—from savory pastries to freshest of fruit and à la carte eggs and pancakes
The free-flowing Cava is a much-loved perk here
There are two on-site restaurants: Origens—where breakfast is served each morning—is good for Mediterranean cuisine relying on fresh
seasonal ingredients; we enjoyed a delectable salmon tartar and white-fish ceviche with glasses of blush rosé
Adults always have the option of heading to the kid-free rooftop for mojitos and tapas (and chill beats) with 360-degree views of the Mediterranean Sea and the Santa Eulalia Bay
If you prefer to stay super local, you can always enjoy the slip of beach just beyond the pool (take a dive off the jetty) or follow a snaking path around the perimeter of the hotel to reach the sheltered Cala Martina beach with a couple of cute restaurants, a surfing school, and calm shallow waters. There’s also a Nikki Beach club right next door if the itch to party should strike–but the need to stay close enough to your bed is even greater.
Staff are helpful and friendly, milling about and ready to top up your rosé or refresh your towels—while also staying fairly discreet. The concierge was particularly helpful, managing our preferences for activities on-site (yoga, massages, etc.) but also offering recommendations for excursions elsewhere on the island. Special mention must also be made of the valets who oversee a steady coming and going of taxis for guests—always with a smile.
While the hotel doesn’t brand itself as a wellness resort, there is a Thai-style spa with treatment rooms and a smaller pool that’s dotted with Balinese beds. My massage therapist was excellent but the room itself could’ve used an update. In addition to a fully equipped gym, the hotel runs daily classes that include aerial yoga and water sports. Book early as these fill up fast.
There is wheelchair-accessible parking and stair-free access to the main building. Rooms and bathrooms (with walk-in showers) have been designed with wide corridors and doors for wheelchair access. Guests with mobility issues may inquire about adaptable leisure equipment.
One thing to note is that, on our visit, there was some seaweed on the beach—but that didn’t stop us from getting in (the water was deliciously warm and calm). Plus, the further out you swim, the less it will bother you.

“Vicente has been a friend of ours for years

The kitchen is decorated with Indian-themed pictures in wooden frames and traditional Mediterranean tiles that give the floor a pleasant coolness
Contemporary design and art from different eras are mixed with the 1970s touches of a flokati rug

The idea is that all your daily activities can take place here,” says the architect
It was a challenge to integrate the design harmoniously into the building while meeting the strict rules of landmark protection
the architects were inspired by the heritage of the classic building itself and considered their work a privilege that comes with certain responsibilities
Elements from mobile homes and yachts inspired the design of this staircase that can be tucked away when it’s not being used
Zaragoza is sure that the blue painting he bought at the Sant Jordi flea market was done in Ibiza by an English painter in the 1960s
which simplified the design process,” says Romano
“That let us create a more fluid ambience and to connect the sleeping area with the bathroom.”
Another innovative feature is found in the narrow hallway where the staircase disappears into a cabinet
“It was an adaptation dictated by the floor plan,” says Romano
we didn’t want the staircase to take up too much room
The one we designed works like a staircase you might find in a mobile home or on a yacht as it’s practically built right into the cabinet

Ibiza has been renowned as one of Europe’s top party destinations for decades
The Spanish Balearic island’s carefree reputation began to take shape during the tourist boom of the 1970s
following the death of Spanish dictator Francisco Franco
As waves of visitors—particularly hippies—flocked to the island in the latter half of the decade
Ibiza gradually transformed into a nightlife hotspot
the island welcomed approximately 3.7 million tourists
