Those more familiar with the area might well add that it has the picturesque cove and tranquil beach of San Marcos. But ask a Canario what they know about Icod de los Vinos and they’ll tell you it’s the best place on Tenerife for shopping With the Three Kings safely returned to the East and shopkeepers all over the island taking a red marker pen to their price labels Tenerife Magazine heads off to the picturesque town of Icod de los Vinos to find out why Tinerfeños believe there’s a whole lot more to Icod than just a drago tree I decide to take a look down Calle San Sebastián where I”M stopped in my tracks by the sight of exquisitely tailored Italian imported dresses wearing the sort of price label they would presumably not be seen dead in Further investigation reveals an entire shop dedicated to French and Italian couture at prices that were eyebrow raising before the sales and are now just too good to ignore The trouble with buying fashionable little Italian numbers is that you simply have to have shoes and a handbag to match Icod de los Vinos is the place to come when you want to refresh your wardrobe stock up on some fine wines or find the perfect gift for special occasions without busting the budget after the conquest Icod was quickly recognised for its fertile valleys From 1496 sugar plantations were planted across the area attracting wealth and settlers to make it their home But in the 17th century the sugar trade collapsed and the first vines that came to lend their names to the area were planted Today the municipality of Icod de los Vinos produces excellent wines predominantly cultivating the listan grape variety under the Ycoden-Daute-Isora denomination label where almost a million kilos of grapes are processed The wealth generated by the wine industry distilled a culture of commercialism in Icod de los Vinos which is evident in the 200 or more shops that make up one of the oldest shopping centres on Tenerife Beneath the benign gaze of Mount Teide and the traditional balconies family businesses have thrived here for decades Keeping their prices low and their stock constantly changing the shopkeepers of Icod aim to ensure their customers will return and judging by the crowds who are enjoying the winter sunshine as they gather carrier bags by the armful it’s a sun for free © simonapilolla / Getty Images You might not believe it when looking at the ritzy resorts on the island’s south coast, but the best things in Tenerife really are free culture or history that rocks your traveler boat stargaze in some of Europe’s most spectacularly dark skies explore alley-woven historic towns studded with colonial mansions wander subtropical gardens full of rare beauty and birdsong camp in off-the-radar forest reserves – take your pick the chances are you can do it in Tenerife and it won’t cost you a single cent Here's our pick of the top free things to do in Tenerife for the perfect Canary Islands trip on a budget It’s not just the daytime that has an otherworldly feel in Parque Nacional del Teide, where all eyes are on the 3718m (12,198ft) Pico del Teide volcano Spain’s highest peak punches above a crater-blasted the national park has hands-down some of the best stargazing in the northern hemisphere Observatorio del Teide attracts astronomers from all over the world hook onto one of the free tours (check the website for dates) to get the chance to peer through one of the giant telescopes that open up the wonders of the universe you can see plenty with just a simple pair of binoculars: meteor showers the Milky Way and 83 of the 88 officially recognized constellations The blanket of glittering stars is impressive even when observed with the naked eye Handsome, history-rammed Garachico on Tenerife’s rugged north coast is a true survivor. The town has been blighted by fire, flood, freak storms and a massive volcanic eruption over the centuries and lived to tell the tale. Its historic center is a beauty, especially Plaza Libertad shaded by lofty palms and Indian laurel trees where you can get a flavor of the Canaries beyond the tourist crowds watching locals gather over dominoes at cafes and kids play where you can paddle and swim in natural pools shaped by the lava flow from the 1706 volcanic eruption If you make it as far as Icod de los Vinos in the island’s north it’s most likely because you’re eager to glimpse the town’s famous drago (dragon) tree it is thought to be the oldest and largest of its kind in the world Some say it’s been standing here for 1000 years this gnarled wonder is one very ancient and special tree Skip Drago Park and instead admire it for nada from the lovely vantage point of Plaza Andrés de Lorenzo Cáceres Buzzing with activity from the crack of dawn, Tenerife’s markets offer a fabulous and free taste of island life (as well as plenty of picnic inspiration). Top billing goes to the architecturally striking, neo-Islamic Mercado de Nuestra Señora de África with arches and patios that are a nod to nearby Morocco Its stalls heave with ripe tropical fruits La Laguna’s Mercado Municipal is also worth a look Some stalls will also let you taste products for free Long before forest bathing became a thing, tinerfeños (Tenerife islanders) were flocking to the island's áreas recreativas at weekends to spend quality time with friends and family among forests of fragrant Canarian pine Dotted all over the island – often in the most scenic places – these tree-shaded spots are brilliant for an alfresco lunch with stone barbecue areas and picnic tables that are free for all to use It costs nothing to crash on the beach, dig your toes deep into glimmering volcanic sands and watch the Atlantic waves roll in. There’s some seriously stiff competition when it comes to Tenerife’s best beaches, but one you won’t forget in a hurry is Playa de las Teresitas a gorgeous mile-long scoop of honey-colored sand sapphire-blue seas and the Anaga Mountains as a backdrop The flour-soft sands here were imported from the Sahara the beach thrums with locals hanging out at the chiringuitos (beach bars) over cocktails There are epic views over the sands from the mirador on the ridge at the east end of the beach Lodged in a spectacular neoclassical, cotton-candy-pink building, Santa Cruz de Tenerife’s Museo de Bellas Artes wings you through 14 exhibition rooms of paintings from the 16th to the 20th centuries Canarian and Flemish paintings feature highly as well as some hard-hitting battle scenes by Manuel Villegas Brieva That Tenerife has such an impressive museum is a wonder Want to go camping but don’t want to pay for a pitch? While spontaneous wild camping is off-limits in Tenerife, the island has a sprinkling of free forest campsites, many hidden under the shade of lofty pines in remote beauty spots far from the crowds. You’ll need a permit (so book far in advance) but these back-to-nature sleeps are really something Often you’ll be alone with only the stars and hooting It’s one of the best free shows on the island La Laguna is often billed as Tenerife’s most beautiful town and you can believe the hype – it’s a historic knockout this Unesco World Heritage-listed town is a marvelous time capsule and its streets are brimming with 16th- to 18th-century mansions painted in punchy pastels some festooned with ornate wooden balconies that it provided the model for many colonial towns in the Americas Going for a wander here is a joy. Calle San Agustín presents a lineup of the town’s most photogenic mansions, some centered around tree-shaded courtyards. While you’re here, stop by the Museo de la Historia de Tenerife a glorious 16th-century mansion spelling out the island’s past in artifacts Visit after 2pm on Friday and Saturday and it’s free The samba rhythms, sequins and smiles of Santa Cruz de Tenerife’s carnival in February show off the island at its fiesta-loving best Second only to the carnival in Rio de Janeiro this is a riotous round-the-clock feast of music Most of the wild street parties and events are free but you’ll need to get in quick with booking your accommodations For a little taste of carnival year-round, visit the free Casa del Carnaval Bearing the avant-garde hallmark of Pritzker Architecture Prize-winning Swiss architects Herzog and de Meuron, the angular, dark concrete Tenerife Espacio de las Artes (TEA) is patterned with 1200 randomly shaped glass openings especially after dark when it glimmers like a filigree lantern by the waterfront Though exhibitions in the galleries are ticketed, it’s free to take a peek inside the building – and you really should. Be sure to drop into the extraordinary downstairs library a sharply contemporary space for browsing and reading a huge and magnificent Canarian pine tree towering 45m (148ft) high and bringing binoculars ups your chances of spotting birdlife In 1392, a statue of the Virgin holding a candlestick washed up on a beach and was discovered by two indigenous Guanche goatherds. The effigy gave the quaint fishing village of Candelaria on Tenerife’s east coast sacred status The village springs to life for the festival of the virgin in mid-August, with flower displays, fiestas, folk groups and pilgrims. The incident, which occurred at kilometre 44.6, is one of several disruptions linked to the lingering impact of Storm Olivier across the Canary Islands. The emergency services responded swiftly to the incident arriving quickly at the scene, where they provided on-site care to the injured woman before transferring her to hospital for further medical treatment. The force of the impact severely damaged the car, highlighting the scale of the rockfall. The affected section of the TF-5 was quickly cordoned off as officers from the Guardia Civil in Icod de los Vinos took charge of managing the situation. Their efforts were focused on maintaining safety, assessing the risk of further landslides, and coordinating the clean-up operation. The region, still saturated from heavy rains brought by Storm Olivier, continues to face risks of geological instability. The storm has caused widespread flooding, mudslides, and road closures throughout the archipelago over the last couple of days. Authorities are urging people to remain vigilant, particularly in mountainous or landslide-prone areas. As Tenerife remains under weather and geological alerts, this latest incident stands as a sobering reminder of nature’s power and unpredictability. Text description provided by the architects. Icod is a hybrid of 12 houses between a block of apartments and detached houses with garden. But this is only a consequence. What explain it are 2 singularities. One its territorial geolocation and another be promoted by a local private initiative.  Tenerife is a hilly island in the Atlantic with a population of about 500 inhabitants per km2, but with a very high rate of land occupation with low density being ripe to oversaturate and to overwhelm its sustainability. The promotion comes from a neighbor on a family plot few meters close to his house and awareness of the island situation. © Esaú AcostaThe opportunities come up of the negotiation among the architects and the developer to get the appropriate strategies. For us, the island is a field of autonomous and self-regenerating cells as a city made out of houses; territoriality turned urbanity; that is its scale,  ... we call it terrurbanity. DiagramAnd we generate a NODE in this frame working with materials and local suppliers, but generating a denser and more efficient cell with a new paradigm within it. All this led to a process of empowerment of the local private promotion. .... The seed is planted. © Esaú AcostaIn terms of efficiency we look for the highest density possible; the maximum number of dwellings. The great depth of the plot (steeply sloping) presaged courtyards inside it. Both reasons led us to implement a single strategy which proved enough for all our ambitions: overexploit these courtyards, densify their use. © Esaú AcostaThey are homes with 2 and 3 rooms of small dimensions but with an enormous spatiality Space is luxury. All houses have identical conditions of orientation ...Consciously we have acted since metabolist postulations that were implicit in the project George and Ingrid Taupe have gradually transferred their collection from a similar museum in Carincia in the south of Austria as they have transformed the ruins of an old farm into a feast of natural colour and design Ingrid started the doll collection in 1992 fired by her artistic studies “I love the contemporary dolls that enjoyed a boom in the 1980’s and 1990’s makers around Europe began to make them with such wonderful stylish designs and costumes Later teddy bears also enchanted me with their distinctive characters and they fit well with the dolls.” George looks after the business side of things but as they showed me down from the living area to the converted stables I could see he shares Ingrid’s creative vision and trailing plants entwine to make the 11,000 square metre farm seem even bigger The views were pretty special too with a calima (dust cloud) shrouded Mount Teide towering over one side and a steep drop to Icod and the sea beyond on the other The smaller stable door opened into a long display area Was it my imagination or had the rows of teddys quickly frozen after mischievously scuttling around on their shelves and in their alcoves One of their stock suppliers had told Ingrid that for a teddy to make you love it Maybe it was the tilt of their head or those big button eyes but they all seemed to have a sense of fun whether they were cooking Two well wrapped up New Zealand bears were trying a spot of skiing some small chunky wooden bears from Russia pulled apart to house candles with open mouths to release the smoke and a smiling trio had even embraced the Three Kings tradition Out and down one of the family and wheelchair friendly ramps through the gardens it was time to meet the ladies in the main stable the traditional and more fragile porcelain models were around the walls in glass cabinets The museum has moulds to make porcelain body parts and a small kiln to fire them in for the curious that want to see how they are made some dolls were made from cloth and two distinctive sisters with ginger ringlets were made from papier mache and coated in wax The chubby cheeks and freckles were all sweetness and light but their smiles hinted at a less angelic side Most of the dolls come from France and Germany but oriental and eastern European groups showed the wide spread interest through all corners of the world Ingrid always has an eye on new recruits “I’d like more Russian dolls their dolls have a more religious feel and fashion African stone ethnographic dolls are another ambition of mine we could make a special area for them here.” I felt quite guilty closing the door on the bears and dolls but they need a constant cool temperature I still think they all burst into life and play once they are left to their own company Museums are often seen as coldly serious but in the sun kissed wine region of Icod de Los Vinos Art Landya is offering warm lively memories of the pleasures of our youth Open ““ lava was spewing from Pico Viejo in north Tenerife I couldn’t see my hand in front of my face let alone the other 15 explorers on this organised tour of Cueva del Viento A minute into this experiment we switched on our helmet lights and appeared again among the flickering shadows in the Cave of the Wind The entrance cave was positively roomy compared to the three layers of volcanic tubes that cover 17 kms making them the longest in Europe An unfortunate old lady had rediscovered these tunnels 90 years ago when she fell down a chasm and needed rescuing The lush green undergrowth above gives little indication of the turmoil that has carved out this labyrinth but on our 10 minute walk from the mini bus drop off I saw bizarre rock formations that had bubbled up all those years ago The pine trees shielded the old volcanic bridle path At times I had to duck to avoid scraping the ceiling and picking my way over the rough floor added to the delicate balancing act Sulphur nodules and solid drops of lava decorated the roof there were signs that water had dripped through over the years I was in one of the first parties to visit in June 2008 when the caves reopened and I noticed a few subtle safety changes Metal bolts and concrete had been used to secure parts of the roof and rubber matting and metal grids made some of the trickier paths easier to negotiate What I saw was stunning but the imagination was having a field day at the dark tunnels and fissures feeding off from the main route At our deepest dip we were facing the 17 metre deep chasm that links the various levels the sun filtered through a sealed iron gate up on the surface A man was injured in a house fire in Icod de Los Vinos in the north of Tenerife last night (Thursday) and needed medical treatment for smoke inhalation as reported by the Emergency Services Coordination centre (CECOES) The incident took place on Calle Amparo at approximately 8:30pm Firefighters were quick to extinguish the blaze and ventilate the property ensuring the safety of the surrounding area while SUC medical personnel treated the man and then took him to hospital for further treatment The Icod de Los vinos Local Police were present to assist the emergency services in their efforts while the Guardia Civil took charge of conducting the necessary investigations the exact cause of the fire remains unknown it is crucial for residents to take proactive measures including installing smoke alarms in key areas of the home and ensuring they are regularly tested and maintained avoiding overloading electrical sockets and ensuring that all appliances are in good working order can significantly reduce the risk of electrical fires.  Regularly reviewing and practicing a family fire escape plan can further enhance safety ensuring that everyone knows how to respond quickly and efficiently in the event of a fire The National Police and the Guardia Civil have arrested five people in the south of Tenerife all males aged between 23 and 33 years old suspected of committing crimes ranging from burglary the authorities have managed to link 25 burglaries to the detainees The investigation started in November last year following a burglary in a house in the town of Icod de Los Vinos Initial inquiries led to information about a vehicle associated with the crime which was later identified in subsequent burglaries which led to a joint operation by the National Police and the Guardia Civil as they were both investigating the group behind them It was soon discovered that the group's modus operandi involved breaking the locks on homes using tools to get in within seconds thanks to the collaborative efforts and information gathered by both police forces some of the vehicles used in the burglaries were identified which led them to the addresses of the registered owners After being granted the correct search warrants five raids were conducted at the homes of the accused in the towns of Candelaria during which they seized items related to the investigated crimes along with a wide array of jewellery and watches two vehicles belonging to the suspects were seized with their financing suspected to have come from the proceeds of the robberies they had committed Various units from both forces took part in the operation including the Organic Unit of Judicial Police of the Guardia Civil in Santa Cruz and the National Police of Puerto de la Cruz-Los Realejos all conducted under the order of the Court of First Instance and Instruction number 1 of Icod de los Vinos It is almost two years since the Action Plan against Volcanic Risk in Tenerife (PAIV) was started and now the Cabildo are preparing to implement the plan particularly in the areas deemed to be at the highest risk if an eruption were to happen on the island The document assesses the volcanic threat on the island and establishes the response to a volcanic emergency with a strategy that aims to specify the means and resources both human and material that will be activated in the event of an eruption train the personnel that will intervene in the emergency and train the population for self-protection measures the University of La Laguna will present the strategy to begin the implementation of the plan" explains the insular director of Security of the Tenerife Cabildo about the practical application of the document promoted by the Technical Security and Civil Protection Service "We started working on the implementation of this strategy last year with a volcanic risk conference that was accompanied by technical work to study how to guarantee essential services and supplies and the actions of the security forces and emergency services," Fernández said referring to the starting point of the strategy developed by the ULL to determine the methodology for the application of the plan This strategy will have a special impact on the population and the administrations located in the areas with a high or very high degree of threat of suffering a volcanic eruption greater emphasis will be placed on disseminating the plan among the population and “The objective is that the inhabitants know self-protection measures in the face of the volcanic risk which we live with day by day and the local administrations know how to act in case of imminent risk or eruption The population has to be prepared,” says Fernández There are 60,000 people living in the area classified as having a high or very high threat of eruption 38,000 people reside in the municipalities of Santiago del Teide and part of Icod de los Vinos where the volcanic risk is very high "Evacuating is not as simple as saying: 'Get out of your houses.' The plan determines how to carry out an evacuation and subsequent shelter “On La Palma 6,000 people were evacuated In Tenerife that number would be reached with a single affected neighbourhood” says the expert who took over the technical management of the Tajogaite eruption we were aware of the risk with which we live," he concluded The most magical night of the year is here and the eternity to post information about the Los Cristianos carnival on their official website”¦ “¦And for having a teasing little carnival logo on the site which came up with a page which more or less said ““ “˜no information about this here.’ To be fair to Arona at least they do provide decent information on their website but they need to wake up to the fact that these days potential visitors are looking for dates of popular events quite a bit in advance There have been questions about the Los Cristianos carnival dates on forums and English language websites for weeks and even on the council’s Facebook page”¦where they were left unanswered In the end the Tenerife Tourist Board announced the dates on TripAdvisor’s Tenerife Forum before Arona included them on their website It’s great that some Tenerife councils are starting to use social media like Facebook and Twitter but they need to understand that these are tools for interaction as well as posting information”¦and that they don’t have to wait for the “˜official poster’ about the event to be ready before sharing information online Co-author of 'Real Tenerife Island Drives' & 'Going Native in Tenerife' Icod de los Vinos is a municipality in Tenerife with around 25,000 inhabitants said to be the oldest of its kind on the island But what else can you see in Icod de los Vinos besides the most popular tree in all of Tenerife Icod de Los Vinos is situated on the northwest side of the island and is one of those charming towns in Tenerife that you absolutely must see if you want to discover Tenerife North the most breathtaking part of the island in our opinion cool and dry and it is windy and mostly clear all year round the temperature generally varies from  14°C  to  26°C  and rarely drops below  12°C  or rises above  29°C Icod de los Vinos might be a small town, but it is worth stopping here even for a short time. A trip here is usually combined with a visit to Garachico as well which is another charming place on this side of Tenerife Drago Milenario or Drago de Icod de los Vinos is definitely the main attraction in Icod and most of the tourists that come to town come especially to see this magnificent tree Not only is this tree considered the oldest of its kind not only in Tenerife but also the oldest in the world The best view of the Dragon Tree in Icod de los Vinos is from the town square which offers a full view of this beautiful tree and the best angle for photos The tree known as the Millenary Dragon Tree is a huge and ancient specimen of Dragon tree (Dracena draco) It is currently considered the longest-lived and largest specimen of its species known in the world With a height of about 21 meters and a perimeter at the base of the trunk of about 17 meters it is attributed an age of approximately 1000 years The natural and cultural relevance of this extraordinary specimen made it worthy of declaration as a National Monument in 1917 and today it presides over the Parque del Drago a botanical park where it can be visited with all the necessary protection measures to guarantee its conservation It is undoubtedly the most visited attraction in Icod de los Vinos and one of the symbols of the island of Tenerife Parque del Drago is the botanical garden with different types of endemic plants where the Dragon tree is located You can visit the Drago Park (Parque del Drago) if you want to see the Drago Milenario tree up close but if you are satisfied with just seeing the tree from afar then you can simply go to Plaza de Andrés de Lorenzo Cáceres and see the tree from there for free from where you get the best view of the Drago Milenario Just walk around and you will find the spot which is also marked on Google Maps as View of the dragon tree as this is really the best viewpoint and the best spot for photographing the Drago tree The construction of this plaza has started in the XVIth century and it surrounds the Church of San Marcos in Icod You have here many beautiful and old trees which give a much needed natural shade during the summer months A unique attraction in Tenerife with more than 800 butterflies from tropical areas all over the world so you will be able to find new species each time you visit Discover the different types of Canarian wines including Malvasía in the Malvasia Museum of Tenerife You can go here for a wine-tasting experience after you've visited the Parque del Drago which is situated right next to the Malvasia Museum This Church is situated right next to the main square and it's a beautiful Catholic church with similar architecture to other churches found in Tenerife Lorenzo Caceres House is a neo-classical building It is believed that the Colonel Lorenzo Caceres was the first person to introduce neo-classical architecture in Icod de los Vinos The Guanche Museum is located in the shopping center La Magallona a place meant to raise awareness of the Guanche culture The Guanches were the first inhabitants of the Canary Islands and you can learn more about their life through recreations of their daily lives Another place on the island where you can learn more about the history of the first inhabitants of the Canaries is at Piramides de Guimar.  ARTlandya is unique in the whole of Europe – it is a museum for contemporary dollART which gives you access to a world of experiences with DOLLS and TEDDYbears The museum is interesting for both children and adults This is no toy museum and no private collection of dolls All the exhibits have been exclusively created in studios by artists so if you want to see a different type of art you may want to give this place a try It was formed 27,000 years ago in basaltic lavas from the first eruptive phase of the Pico Viejo volcano, next to Mount Teide.  It is a huge labyrinthic network of underground passages and you will need to book online ahead of time if you want to visit this special place in Tenerife Most people visiting Tenerife have heard about Icod de los Vinos for one reason: the famous Drago Milenario tree But we recommend that you visit Icod also for another reason, like participating in the local carnaval which usually takes place around February or/and March. It's a smaller event compared to the one in Puerto de la Cruz or Santa Cruz de Tenerife and delightful and the crowd will be mostly made up of local people Things to do in Icod de Los Vinos The full schedule and dates for the 2025 carnival in Icod de Los Vinos have not been announced yet This page will be updated as soon as the dates and the schedule are announced Tenerife is an island full of amazing landscapes and possibilities, so we always advise people to venture out of their resort to explore their what the island has to offer. You can do this in many ways, either by using the local bus system, hiring a car and driving yourself The destination is also perfect for people looking for a family holiday, as you have plenty of things to do with the kids in Tenerife Most people come to Tenerife either for the amazing weather, since it's one of the warmest places in Europe during winter, or for the party atmosphere: there is always something going on, some sort of fiesta, plus the big carnival in Tenerife which is the second-largest in the world after the one in Rio de Janeiro The island is a destination to be explored and discovered beyond its beautiful beaches and you can have a great time here even if you want to do Tenerife on a budget This is the island's NO. 1 attraction and you definitely should NOT miss a visit during your stay Entering the park is free and if you have your own hired car it's easy to explore and hike the many trails inside Teide Natural Park Hiking on Mount Teide itself is also free, but you do have to get a permit for the summit although you have to register in advance due to the limited number of permits per day However, there is a fee if you want to go up by cable car But even if you don't want to climb to the top of Mt Teide the landscapes with the lava and the volcanos and you can also go on several other hikes The town of La Orotava is like an open-air museum La Orotava is not a friendly destination for those with mobility problems But the town is extremely beautiful and even if you don't pay to see the famous Casa de los Balcones you still have plenty of free things to see We recommend a visit to the garden called Hijuela del Botanico which is interesting to see all year round If there's something that Tenerife has plenty of All beaches in Tenerife are public and everyone has free access to them (this is the case in all of Spain in fact you have to pay if you want to use a sunbed or an umbrella there are no restrictions to access a beach in Spain and there's no such thing as a private beach Take a look at our list of the most beautiful beaches in Tenerife and you can pick a different one for each day of your holiday This is probably the best free thing to do in Tenerife at any time of the year since here you can (almost) always find a sunny spot if you're willing to travel a bit Address: Casa de Carta - Calle el Vino €3.50 for students and retirees and free for children under 8 If you're visiting La Laguna either on Friday or on Saturday, it's worth going to see the History and Anthropology Museum It is not a big museum so it will not take you a lot of time to visit but you will find out more info about the rich culture and history of Tenerife.  The famous Dragon Tree in Icod de los Vinos is said to be around 600 years old Although access to the garden where the tree is located is not free the best view of El Drago is actually from Town Square which is obviously free for everyone to enter What to do in Icod de Los Vinos, Tenerife Did you know that Tenerife has a lot of natural pools all around the island and you can swim in them for free (when it's safe to do so) During the summer months, the natural pools in Garachico get super popular and you will see many locals here also. After you're done cooling down, you can continue exploring the town - read our full guide of things to do in Garachico and don't miss a visit to the oldest port town in Tenerife Although entering the lighthouse itself is not possible you should still go there for the beautiful view You can admire the cliffs of Los Gigantes from another perspective spend time on the small rocky beach and even swim there on warm and sunny days (we usually go there in winter or spring and even then we've seen people swimming here) We have a detailed article about Punta de Teno where you can learn more about access rules since the place has grown in popularity and the authorities have restricted access by personal or rental car.  This a unique place in Tenerife and you should allow for time to explore this beautiful forest Go on the Trail of the Senses which starts at Cruz del Carmen and be prepared to see some amazing places (we recommend you do the longer route Or you can do the amazing hike through the Enchanted Forest in Anaga which is one of our favourite experiences in the north of Tenerife This is a nice museum to visit if you are passionate about history and want to learn more about the historic Battle of Santa Cruz de Tenerife that took place on July 25th in1797 Entrance to the Military Museum in Santa Cruz is free Did you know that Tenerife is home to the second largest carnival in the world Taking part in the carnival parties is free and although there are some galas and events where you do need a ticket the most popular days and events during the carnival are free for everyone to join.  If you're visiting Tenerife and you want to have fun at the carnival
