Saving or abandoning this shady individual is one of the first choices you’ll make in the Living Lands
Shortly after being attacked and stranded on an island, you’ll already find yourself deciding the fates of others in Avowed's Living Lands—let’s hope the Envoy didn’t bang their head in the carnage before washing up on the beach
a shady individual locked in a prison cell
who you can either free or leave behind when escaping
The trustworthy Garryck will be by your side during these opening moments
While Ilora tries to convince you to find the key to free her from captivity
Garryck is adamant that she can’t be trusted
Ilora was in her cell before chaos broke out on the island
The decision to free or leave Ilora behind has only minor consequences which are felt almost immediately
she’ll fight by your side against the infected Steadman Ralke
she'll escape and fight against you during the boss
she'll also appear in the Escape Plan sidequest in Dawnshore
Ilora vouches for you and the smugglers will help the couple for no extra cost
Since Ilora isn’t a key character in the story
though it's best to free Ilora to make the fight against Steadman Ralke easier
you’ll have a much easier time dealing damage and staying alive against Ralke
Garryck has a habit of running off to fight Ilora instead if you choose to betray her
generally leaving you fending for yourself against the boss
you can loot a note from Ilora's body bidding farewell to her crew and providing some extra backstory
you'll need to climb into the hatch in the prison roof using the pile of boxes behind you as you enter the room
Head through the hatch to drop down in the jailor's office
You can then grab the jail key off the hanger by the door before unbarring it and opening Ilora’s cell
Whether you free Ilora or leave her behind
you'll use her boat to escape the island and reach Dawnshore
you can chat with both her and Garryck at the Claviger’s Landing docks before moving on
If your morals are getting in the way of freeing this supposed criminal
It sounds as though the guards at this fort (and the Living Lands more widely) are rather corrupt
Ilora is a simple smuggler who was caught before reaching Paradis and her contraband is likely something mundane since the empire restricts many basic items (like contraceptives)

These are the consequences if you choose to release Ilora from Fort Northreach Jail in Avowed or leave her behind
Should you free Ilora from the Fort Northreach Jail in Avowed? This is the first choice that the game springs on you but it still has both immediate and lasting consequences. It's clear that Ilora is one of many NPCs in Avowed who has no love for the colonizing Aedyrans
but given that she knows about a boat that can take you off the fortress island
she might be your only ticket to the Living Lands
here's what happens if you free Ilora in Avowed or leave them in the Fort Northreach Jail and what we think the best choice is
you can agree to help Ilora or threaten to leave them in the Fort Northreach Jail
though you'll have an opportunity to change your mind
you'll still have to actually find the key and unlock the door to free her – more on that below
While the consequences of this choice aren't immediately obvious
they do have an effect quite soon afterwards
If you free Ilora from the Fort Northreach Jail in Avowed then she will stay true to her word and guide you towards her ship
Ilora will also assist you in the boss fight against Steadman Ralke before you reach the boat
and she reappears in the later 'Escape Plan' side quest
if you leave Ilora locked in the cell then she will escape anyway and turn up during the Steadman Ralke boss fight
becoming an additional enemy and shooting you with her pistol
though you can loot her body afterwards to get her Common Pistol
which is a one-handed ranged weapon – these aren't rare and you can easily pick one up elsewhere
and naturally this approach means Ilora won't be seen again in any later quests
So to summarize the outcomes of this choice:
you need to climb up the wooden crates found in the corner of Fort Northreach Jail
go through the hole in the wall then turn right to find a breakable floor by the body of an Aedyran Soldier
Smash that to drop down into a room that was previous inaccessible behind a barred door
Inside this room you'll find the Fort Northreach Jail Key hanging from a shelf
so grab that then unbar the door next to it so you can return to the main area
You can then approach the cell and interact with the door to unlock it if you want to free Ilora in Avowed
Personally I would recommend you do this as it means there's one less person to fight

There will be an olive harvest in Spain this winter
good news that follows two disastrous seasons
in which production suffered a 50% drop in the case of Granada province due to the drought
with the price of olive oil set to go down as a result
however experts warned the consumer will still need to pay high prices until at least Christmas
the price is decreasing from record highs with a litre of extra virgin olive oil now costing 7.80 euros at source
This is almost one euro less than the price at the beginning of the year
which is a bit more expensive in the supermarket
Experts believe the price of oil will continue to fall until the end of the year
"The link with the previous season is very tight
although the season is starting earlier until November
the market cannot be supplied with oil on a large scale
so we are going to pay dearly until Christmas," Rafael Almirón said
the manager of the Cooperativa San Sebastián de Benalúa de las Villas
said the price of oil will fall more sharply from September onwards
"We have an accumulated oil stock of less than 230 million kilos
in four months we will be producing new oil and the price adjustment will come
The best news for everyone would be if it were not drastic
The reasonable thing would be for the litre that is now at eight euros to go down to six," Valverde said
the price of oil will not drop again to the extremes of 2019 and 2020
"Several years will have to pass with continual good harvests
which will allow us to fill the oil cellars and leave a stock that is not temporary but permanent for the price to fall so much again," he added

The estate was given to the first Duke of Wellington by the Spanish royal family (Action Press) Spare a thought for the Duke of Wellington
The Spanish gave his illustrious ancestor a vast estate near Granada as a reward for help in ridding the country of Napoleon
including Prince Charles and the late Queen Mother
resentment has grown in one of the poorest corners of Spain at the spectacle of los ingleses living it up while locals go unemployed
Spurred by peasant activists and a local historian
is planning to make a legal claim for part of the 2,000-acre estate
“This is something that could change our history,” said Domene
referring to plans to expropriate some of the duke’s rich agricultural land for impoverished farmers
to the first Duke of Wellington in 1813 as a token of gratitude for booting out Napoleon
famed for his victory over Napoleon at Waterloo in 1815
a historian who is advising the Illora mayor
“Many noblemen took advantage of the slovenliness of the administration of royal land and arbitrarily expanded their boundaries,” said Espejo
The first duke’s will made no mention of the Molino del Rey farm but the second duke’s did
along with a mention of “certain problems” relating to registration of the land
Espejo is scouring state archives for proof that the land belongs to the Illora municipality
The estate is used mostly as a hunting lodge
Prince Charles attended shoots there in the 1970s when he was courting Jane Wellesley
Princess of Wales complained about Charles’s infidelity with Camilla Parker Bowles
the latter sought refuge there from the media
Domene says he has had no contact with the duke but describes the town’s dealings with the estate as “inauspicious”
In 2008 a group of trade unionists staged a symbolic occupation of the property
“This is one of the last bloodstained bastions of medieval privilege in one of the poorest regions of Granada and the dukes merely use it as a hunting lodge for their wealthy
aristocratic European friends,” said one activist
When 200 children recently tried to plant poplar trees along the estate border as part of a school project
the duke’s major-domo told them to go away because they were trespassing
Access for a mountain bike competition was refused
and a request from a local museum to put two of the estate’s ancient boundary stones on display was rebuffed
His son and heir goes by the title Marquess of Douro — another gift from the Spanish
comes from a remote hill of Rangamati in the Chittagong Hill Tracts
“It takes about two days to travel from my house to Rangamati town
From the town you first have to take a bus then cross a river by a boat and lastly a four-hour climb up the hills,” says Nation
it became almost impossible for him to continue education after the primary level
“There is no secondary school at our locality and traveling to the town daily from that place is almost impossible
I did not even have the money to pay my school fees,” he adds
“I took admission at Moanoghar at class-six,” Nation says
“The school was not only free but also provided free accommodation and food
Even after I have joined college they have allowed me to stay at the school hostel so that I can continue my education at Rangamati College from here.” Besides
receives a travel allowance for attending classes in the college in return for tutoring the junior students of the school and helping in maintaining the school facilities
Moanoghar has brought the light of education to thousands of ethnic children from the three hill districts of Chittagong – Rangamati
joint secretary of Moanoghar's executive committee says
“Those who come to Moanoghar usually live in remote areas of the three hill districts like Thanchi and Ruma
where there are no schools and classes cannot be held during the rainy season
You would find children from almost 10-11 ethnic communities here – Chakma
Santal and even Monipuris from the hills of Sylhet.”
Moanoghar started off in 1974 as an orphanage for children who had lost their parents during the Liberation War of Bangladesh
“There was a Birangana camp at the place where the Rangamati Orphanage now stands
From our temple we could hear the cries of helpless women and children who had been tortured by the military
We were SSC (Secondary School Certificate) examinees at that time – Bimal and Praggananda and I
We began to think that something must be done to help these children,” says Ssraddha Lankar Mahathero
which is situated in the Rangapani area of Rangamati
He says that besides the orphans of the War
there was an army of vulnerable children among the ethnic communities of the Chittagong Hill Tracts
whose parents had lost their home and occupation because of the construction of Kaptai Dam and the settlement of Bengalis in the Hill districts
the three young Buddhist monks began to plan the opening of a school for the orphans
war-children and underprivileged children of the hill districts
“The temporary shaft that hill people build in their fields on the hills to store the harvest of vegetables cultivated along with rice is called Moanoghar
They use it for six months and after harvest they go back to their villages with the crops for the next six months
where children will come and cultivate their minds through general as well as technical education and go back to their homes or workplace with the light of knowledge,” Mahathero says
the Buddhist monks received donations from the locals in the form of land
musti (alms) and voluntary work but as the number of children grew from the initial 30
it became almost impossible to run the school on alms
Help came from a French humanitarian organisation named Partage in 1982-83 that provided fund to build the necessary infrastructures and acquire more land in Rangapani
when Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affair was formed after the Peace Accord of 1997
Partage stopped funding as the ministry took over some of the financial responsibilities of the school
With the student population exceeding 1000
the school began to face dire financial crisis
we began to take fees from a portion of the students who could afford it
through the Rotary Club of Karwan Bazaar came with a 3-year-long scholarship programme 'Promotion of Secondary Level Education Among Minorities'
sponsoring 50 students from class eight to secondary school level,” Buddha says
one of the three full-time hostel-supers of Bishakha Bhaban
the only girl's hostel that houses 189 girls informs,“Orphans are now admitted only if a sponsor can be found
The imposition of fees is affecting the drop-out rate and admission rate as many cannot even afford the nominal fee of Tk 1800 a year that the school now charges.”
“At present the school receives Tk 1 lac grant from the Social Welfare Ministry but it is not enough to cover even the daily meals of the 500 residential students or the salary of the 80 full time staff of the school,” says Buddha
“The quality of food is very poor and the menu is without variation–rice
lentil and vegetable with perhaps a meat dish once a month,” admits Buddha
who claims that Moanoghar cannot afford to improve the current diet under their present fund
“The 12 boy's hostel and 1 girl's hostel are in dilapidated condition
We cannot even provide bed to all the residential students,” he adds
ex-president and project coordinator of the scholarship programme
thinks that providing support to a school like Moanoghar is very important to promote peace and development in the hinterlands of the Chittagong Hill Tracts
“The ethnic communities do not have adequate opportunities to pursue mid-level education
Moanoghar being a residential school can attract different ethnic groups from distant areas,” he says
Tucked in the lush green hills of Rangamati
Moanoghar has all the possibilities to become a prestigious educational institution with its acres of land
support of the local community and above all promising students
All it needs is proper funding and a strong professional management to run the facilities and continue its task of kindling the light of knowledge among ethnic tribal communities of Bangladesh
Avowed’s main story is kickstarted with an escape from Fort Northreach after a devastating shipwreck
it also features a moral choice that affects the later game so they’re not to be taken lightly
As you make your way through Fort Northreach for the first time, you’ll be faced with aggressive creatures to deal with. You’ll also pick up your first bits of gear and get to grips with the combat systems of the game and your chosen class
About halfway through the introductory mission
who is clearly angling to be freed by you before you move on
So should you track down the keys and set her loose
you should let Illora out of prison as it’ll save you a fight later on and will aid you in a side-quest once you get to Paradis
adding one extra combatant to your early-game fights
which is handy when you’re learning the ropes
If you decide to go with merciful and benevolent as your character arc
letting Ilora free actually turns out to be a very useful option
with the conversation being considerably more friendly than your first
The real plus comes later when you pick up the side quest Escape Plan
you’ll be told of two citizens who need to escape the city after enemies hunting them discover they live there
Avowed Ancient Soil guide: Should you accept Sapadal’s power offer?
After collecting some items to facilitate their departure, the couple will inform you that the smugglers who were supposed to get them out of town are extorting them for more money
After heading over to discuss it with the smugglers
She’ll advocate for your position and save a pretty penny that either you or the couple would have to pay
It’s a significant saving and makes the whole exchange a lot easier and more civil than it would otherwise have been
it’s possible to leave Ilora behind in her cell
though the game will give you several opportunities not to throughout your conversation
Once you’ve told her that you’re leaving (and stealing her boat) you can proceed through the next few areas
Once you arrive at the final area of the quest
you’ll be faced with a disease-ridden member of your crew
That’s Steadman Ralke and he’ll serve as the first boss you’ll need to take on in Avowed
because Ilora has picked the lock on her cell door and escaped
so you’ll have to dispatch both foes before progressing
you’ll begin the main story quest On Strange Shores
instead of in Dawnshore as they were supposed to
They’ll meet a few characters along the way
and while it’s primarily a tutorial/introduction quest
there is something important that could impact your gameplay: The NPC Ilora
You’ll come across this smuggler in the jail of the outpost in Avowed’s On Strange Shores quest
you don’t have to help her — you could just leave her in jail
Note: This features spoilers for On Strange Shores in Avowed
There are so many objectives to complete On Strange Shores in Avowed
and the game will show you exactly what to do
A lot of the objectives are pretty self-explanatory
and it will be something you’ll do to uncover secrets throughout the game
Once the opening cutscene is over in Avowed
and answer however you’d like — I chose to be cordial and helpful
There’s a sword right nearby for you to pick up
There’s also a Health Potion among the rubble to pick up
and then break through the simple wooden wall with your sword
following the quest marker in Avowed’s On Strange Shores
Climb up the nearby rocks and pass through a brief tunnel
Defeating the Xaurips is a pretty simple affair
Slash through these enemies and you’ll be ready to move on
be careful as you’re also about to learn about traps
There’s a tripwire that fires darts at you nearby
Get close and interact with one of the wooden poles to disable it
then climb the ladder to get back on the path to the Outpost
and it’s a really grim scene with dead soldiers littered everywhere
you’ll find the Fort Northreach Storage key on one of the bodies in the fort
Look for glowing orange floating off the corpse
This leads you to a Common Breastplate found in a treasure chest
Follow the quest marker out of this building
and you’ll drop down into another clearing
which is where the game teaches you about blocking incoming attacks
there’s also a health potion for you to grab
Follow the path again and open the huge doors to go back into Fort Northreach
you’ll meet Ilora after opening the next door
You don’t have to deal with Ilora at all - you can certainly leave her here for Avowed’s On Strange Shores
does not trust her at all but ignore them and agree to help
You’ll find a door that’s barred but there’s another way
The first step is to get the key to help her out
Climb these up and jump across the nearby gap
and swing your sword at the wooden floor to break through
Jump down twice to get into the room you couldn’t enter
There’s a key on the wall and a treasure chest to open
Unbear the door and free Ilora from her jail cell
She’ll agree to go with you and be able to use her boat to get off the island
You’re now faced with some brambles that you need to burn
and climb up the wooden platforms you just used
Jump across again and instead of going right
head left for this part of Avowed’s On Strange Shores
That will clear away the brambles and let you proceed
The next room has a few Xaurips to deal with; this might be a good time to practice using the bow to deal with them from a distance
Try to dodge the javelins they throw as well
Take the nearby platforms to jump across a series of rocks
This gives you yet another series of rocks to jump across
Sneak attack the Xaurip and then dip back into the tall grass to stealth once again
Resume following the path after combat’s over and you should level up at this point
You’ll get to pick your first ability — Charge
or Minor Missiles; pick whichever suits your playstyle
and follow the path over the river and up the nearby rocks
You’ll find a corpse here with an Essence Potion
This teaches you another way to burn the brambles - casting fire magic
Do so and you can proceed in Avowed’s On Strange Shores
It’s now time to fight even more Xaurips - this is also a great time to practice magic and see if it’s right for you
There are three or four Xaurips in this area
with grass to crouch in and a large rock pillar to hide behind
Pick up the Health Potion and keep going down the only route you can - into the water
Make sure you take the time to save here because you’re about to fight a boss - Steadman Ralke
There’s no way to avoid this fight that we could see
This was when I realized how powerful magic is
Steadman Ralke uses a devastating two-handed hammer
If you dodge and simply zap him with magic
He has a dash swing that hits incredibly hard
which he follows up with a secondary attack
Steadman Ralke has another hammer attack that can knock you down and a large AOE stomp you must avoid standing in
he’ll start doing a charging hammer smash that also has a large AOE around it
It’s quite important to dodge these or just be nowhere near them
there are a few treasures you can loot - a treasure chest directly ahead
you can jump across some rocks to loot a backpack
Go through the door whenever you’re ready to proceed
Before sailing to Dawnshore in Avowed’s On Strange Shores
you’ll find a huge piece of green Adra in the nearby room that you can interact with
all you have to do is go outside and sail to Dawnshore
The real question is — should you save Ilora in Avowed’s On Strange Shores
and there’s no real penalty in the main story for doing so
there’s a side quest she makes much easier in Dawnshore - Escape Plan
She’ll convince the smugglers to not rip off the NPCs you’re helping as a one-time favor
Avowed launches on February 18, 2025, on PC and Xbox Series X|S. Those who purchase the Premium Edition can play earlier on February 13
