Jaca will serve a pre-fixe menu that Patterson describes as an “evolution” of his culinary style
Patterson is ready to get back in the kitchen
“I have a different perspective now,” Patterson says
“I think there’s a lot of possibilities and I’m really excited about LA
For Corbin, the opening of Alta marks a milestone in his eight-plus-year restaurant career, and an important opportunity to give back to his community. “People like me don’t really get the opportunity to own or co-own a fine dining establishment,” says Corbin. “A lot of times, [people like me] don’t even get a chance to get in the kitchen. To be able to give that opportunity to folks like me, communities like mine, backgrounds like mine, [people of] my color — it’s dope.”

Print In late September a light-purple square of an Instagram post caught the attention of fans of fine dining all over the world: Chefs Daniel Patterson and Keith Corbin said they would open a new restaurant
Now he’s ready to return to fine dining with Corbin in creating Jaca
a Beverly Grove restaurant that the duo hopes to open in the spring
While some details are still to be determined
here are five key things to know about Jaca
its tasting-menu format and where to find it
“A couple of years ago I felt the energy coming back
So I’m really excited to be able to get back in and do it but in a different way — building on the culture and the community connections that we have developed.”
he’d spent more than two decades running full tilt in professional kitchens
all of the work and the pressure and the 100-hour work week,” he said
He wanted to focus on the first iteration of Locol
who grew up in Watts and became his business partner
and in the last near-decade Patterson became more ingrained in his neighborhood restaurants in Watts and West Adams
For years fine dining left his mind — until recently
Food
There isn’t a good idea that can’t be taken further
and I didn’t know if it was going to come back,” Patterson said
“It was a little bit at a time and then it grew and it grew
I think that kind of cooking doesn’t work for me unless there’s risk taking.”
the Alta executive chef whose soul food formed the backbone of Locol’s new iteration
He said he plans to spend a lot of time in the kitchen with Patterson at Jaca
“But what I do know is that I’m excited because for me
Two menus are planned: An earlier seating will serve an abbreviated number of courses because guests might not want or have the time for a multi-hour dinner
A later seating will offer a longer menu that could include as many as 10 or 15 courses
Fine dining has shifted since Coi debuted in 2006
and that means Patterson and Corbin will also be brainstorming new ways to appeal to diners
“When we opened Coi the food we were doing was very new
and it changed a lot of how people cook in the Bay Area and around the world,” Patterson said
Instagram and the rise of this interest in food and food as entertainment means that a lot of the things that we did that were new are not new anymore
So we’re gonna have to figure out how to have that emotional impact.”
attached to Corbin and Patterson’s Alta restaurant
Jaca is also expected to open a next-door wine bar and bottle shop
Corbin and Patterson hope locals can drop in for a more casual experience
“It’s been really important to have a way for our Alta community to come and connect
and give a few different price points,” Patterson said
The dining room of Son of a Gun
will become the home of new restaurant Jaca
(Katie Falkenberg / Los Angeles Times) They’re taking over the Son of a Gun spaceEarlier this year Patterson called restaurateurs Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo
hoping to mine their knowledge of the city’s available buildings
when they gave him surprising news: They were considering closing their decade-old Beverly Grove stalwart Son of a Gun and offered Corbin and Patterson the space
“I don’t think they were actively engaged in it [closing],” Patterson said
“I think it was just in our conversation that the idea popped in their head
removing the nautical-themed vestiges and adding Mid-Century Modern touches and sunset colors
While Jaca won’t operate under Alta Community, the chefs’ new nonprofit that encompasses Locol and Alta, it’s destined to play a part in providing job placement and training for up-and-coming chefs in Watts and beyond.
Patterson, left, and Corbin in the kitchen of their recently reopened Locol, where they employ and train members of the Watts community. (Stephanie Breijo / Los Angeles Times) Locol employs members of the Watts community, often at-risk youth, many who’ve never worked in professional kitchens before. After training at Locol, those who wish to keep working and learning can continue at Alta.
“It creates a pipeline of fluidity that I think is really hard to come by in the industry,” Patterson said.
Should employees want a culinary path in a fine-dining kitchen, after their time in Locol and Alta, Patterson and Corbin hope to train up-and-coming chefs at Jaca. It echoes the path of Corbin himself, who worked as a kitchen manager at Locol before becoming Patterson’s business partner and chef-owner at Alta.
“Can you imagine how hard it is to be starting out in the kitchen and think about even getting into a level of a restaurant like Jaca or Coi or Noma or any of those?” Corbin said. “To be able to have an entry point and work your way up to this third level because it’s already embedded in the program or in the company? That’s life changing.”

South African sailor Vuyisile Jaca bravely seized all the chances along the way
defying the odds to become a record-breaking
Grab a chance and you won’t be sorry for a might-have-been’ – that well-known quote from Ransome’s We Didn’t Mean to go to Sea is an excellent piece of advice as long as there’s someone providing the opportunities
it’s also one of those inverted laws whereby the people who need a lucky break the most
You need to be in the right place at the right time and possess the confidence to say yes
When Tracy Edwards’ Maiden finally arrived alongside the Cowes Yacht Haven pontoon last April she was carrying young women from all the inhabited continents of the earth
Maryama Seck (France) and Vuyisile Jaca (South Africa)
displayed their home nations’ flags with additional pride as the first Black women to have raced around the world
this was the culmination of a series of chances she’d needed all her courage to take
Her childhood had been blighted by the loss of her mother when she was seven years old then the death of her father at 14
She’d had to leave the village where she’d grown up and move to live with relatives in a township outside Durban
Her new school was overcrowded and run down but had recently introduced nautical science into its curriculum
In the second year they were taken to the charity Sail Africa for an introduction to the water
Vuyie attended Sail Africa weekly for the last year of school
She hoped to study science at university but her maths grade wasn’t good enough
so she went back to the charity asking whether she could help
‘She was sometimes overlooked but she persisted and learned to swim
became a swimming instructor and our water safety facilitator
became a cornerstone of our “Girls in Sailing” programme and got to do the Vasco.’
The charity had found sponsorship to upgrade their L34 yacht
to qualify for the 2021 Vasco da Gama race from Durban to East London
The Sail Africa team was the first all-Black team to compete in the race

Maiden has beaten 14 teams to win the Ocean Globe Race on IRC handicap
becoming the first ever all-women crew…
De Fin then put Vuyie’s name forward for the Maiden Foundation’s educational tour
After researching Tracy and her achievements Vuyie almost felt too nervous to fill out the application
When she heard she’d been selected for a place sailing from Dakar in Senegal to Capetown
Skipper Heather Thomas recognised Vuyie’s potential and kept her on as Maiden sailed home from Capetown to Hamble Point Marina where they prepared for the Ocean Globe Race
Vuyie began working with British engineer Ami Hopkins and discovered a passion for this aspect of sailing
When Ami was unable to sail legs 3 and 4 of the race
Vuyie took over responsibility for the generator
the water-maker and the electrical systems

Vuyie’s ambition is to inspire other young women to grasp opportunities and be the best that they can be

The local organisers of the World University Games in Jaca
Spain were cautiously optimistic about hosting the 1995 Universiade
having successfully hosted the 10th Winter Universiade in 1981
they were more than confident in their ability to do it again 14 years later
having witnessed the disappointment a month earlier of Sierra Nevada postponing the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships due to a lack of snow
anxiety was high about whether the weather would cooperate
It wasn’t until the night before the competition was set to start
that everyone involved in the Jaca Universiade was able to breathe a huge sigh of relief
Even more snow would come in the following days
ensuring that the Games would go on as planned
The King and Queen of Spain exhibited their love of sport and support for the Games by attending the Opening Ceremony as well as a number of competitions
This despite the fact that King Juan Carlos I broke his wrist in a skiing accident the day after the ceremony
The Spaniards were rewarded for their efforts not only with a healthy dose of snow but also with the star of the Games – Spain’s own Monica Bosch
who became the first Spanish woman to win two golds at a Universiade when she topped the podium in the slalom and giant slalom events
Not bad for a 22-year-old economics student from the decidedly non-mountain town of Barcelona
hosts of the next Winter Universiade in Muju-Chonju
also made its mark on these Games with two world records in short track speedskating
So-Hee Kim raced to a time of 5:11.76 in the 3,000m and Lee-Kyung Chun set the 1,500m record at 2:27.38
Compatriot Ji-Hoon Chae took home four gold medals of his own in short track for the best personal medal haul of the Games
tied with Russian cross-country skier Olga Kosnatcheva
Chae went on to win four gold medals at the Gjøvik World Championships in Norway
The future Korean Universiade hosts also helped to ensure the success of their own Games in 1997 by sending some 200 people to Jaca for nearly two months to learn first-hand from the Spaniards
One demonstration sport in Jaca also had the sports world buzzing
Snowboarding was such a success that it had athletes and organisers alike calling for its inclusion as a full event at the Universiade and the Olympic Games
“We have all proved here that our sport deserves to become an Olympic one,” said parallel slalom winner Jeff Greenwood of the United States
I’m already dreaming of performing in Nagano in 1998.”
Greenwood’s Olympic dream would almost come true in 1998: Snowboarding became an Olympic sport in time for the Nagano Games
but he would have to wait until Salt Lake City 2002 to qualify for his first and only Olympic Games
Snowboarding became an official Universiade sport in 1999 at the Games in Poprad Tatry

Chefs Daniel Patterson and Keith Corbin have announced plans to open a new fine dining restaurant in the space formerly occupied by Son of a Gun
a nod to the blooming tree that enchanted the pair when they first explored the location years ago
The two chefs are the same duo who reopened Locol in Watts this year.
“We’re really excited to create something beautiful and fun in this amazing space,” The restaurant will feature a tasting menu
with Patterson leading the kitchen and both chefs co-owning the establishment
The decision to name the restaurant jaca stems from the memorable jacaranda tree that flourished behind what later became Alta in 2017
Patterson and Corbin said they aim to carry on that spirit of transformation in their new project
The chefs also congratulated Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo
for their 13 successful years serving the Los Angeles community

Global (27 October 2024) — South African sailor Vuyisile Jaca has been nominated for the prestigious Rolex Sailor of the Year Awards; the sole South African to make the list of finalists!
It’s a big moment for South Africa in the world of sailing but an even bigger one in the world of barrier-breaking and history-shaking
Vuyisile has enjoyed a serious fleet of achievements
She is the first black African woman to have circumnavigated the globe and one of only a few people who have successfully rounded the Cape Horn
As a member and ambassador of the Maiden Factor team (with whom she competed in the McIntyre Ocean Globe Race)
Vuyisile is a South African force of inspiration
The history she has made in the world of sailing serves up immense inspiration for other young women to be encouraged to tackle similar adventures even if your life begins on rocky waters.
Vuyisile became orphaned at 14 years old when she lost her father (her mother had passed on when Vuyisile was just 7)
A young Vuyisile then had to move from her village to live with family in a KwaZulu-Natal township where she would attend a new school that offered her a life-changing opportunity—the chance to study nautical science
Vuyisile got a glimpse into a world her future self would come to know inside out
she attended the charity Sail Africa on a weekly basis
The deal was done, and Vuyisile was hooked; having found a new passion. With determination, she approached Sail Africa for opportunities to sail, despite not knowing how to swim
that was soon to become a challenge of the past
Now, she’s swimming with the big fish and boasts the title herself. South Africa couldn’t be more proud of our potential sailor of the year, and we’re all holding thumbs that she takes the title home. You can vote for her here

One spark from any number of stories may explode marriages and fortunes
create new love and new life … and take lives
look for Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst) and Lucky (Jonathan Jackson) to draw closer as they investigate who has been injecting digitalis in the patients IV’s (Sam and Dex
“The closer they get to Cyrus (Jeff Kober)
the closer he gets to them.” Lulu (Alexa Havins) and Dante (Dominic Zamprogna) could also possibly reunite

the greater the chances that someone else will catch his heart … or hers.”
The impeding exit of Chad Duell as Michael Corinthos is starting to unfold
With Michael intent on fighting for his children

Korte and Van Etten have big plans for Lucas Jones (Van Hansis) in the romance department
humor and authenticity into the role of Lucas
We look forward to developing Lucas’s role at the hospital and in his family and giving his romantic life a shot in the arm.”

James Patrick Stuart Returns to General Hospital
Y&R’s Lauralee Bell Takes You Behind-the-Scenes of New Year’s Eve in Genoa City Featuring Her Co-Stars
This all sounds like stuff from a soap in the 80s
Jason & Sasha feels like Carly and Jason and baby Michael
This all sounds like recycled poor writing
Will just be watching old episodes on Amazon when the stories and writing were quality
no imagination from the writers or producers but they do know how to kill off characters just not the right characters smh
Or Jason and Sam when she was pregnant with Sonny’s baby
Are they waiting until November sweeps 2025 to expose trifling Drew and Nina
I’m on board with the Liz and Lucky reunion and their teaming up to clear her name and discover who killed Sam and Dex
as does the story of Sonny facing a health crisis
Will Kristina take over the business or Jason
who may refuse since he’s been working on the other side of the law
We’re not surprised by the possible Lulu/Dante/Cody triangle
But why are the writers planning to rehash the Jason and Sam story with Jason and Sasha
Is this just another way to retaliate againt KM or just an extreme lack of originality
They better make brook Lynn and Chase pregnant and kill off Gio and Lois
the fiddling poolboy needs to go join a symphony orchestra somewhere and live off his actual talent
And he doesn’t need to be related to anybody either
I’d rather they were pregnant and it was high risk versus the path it appears they are taking… I’m fine if there are secrets etc but NOT Gio is BLQs child
I think Sasha & Jason is the best choice
It reminds me of Jason helping Caryl raise Michael as a baby
I don’t see Willow as the murderer type
her alleged “mother” might do it
And then the cops can take care of Nina and my dog Cerberus can finally get the chew toy he wanted for Xmas
Willow is wound a little tight and never received much needed therapy as a cult-rape survivor
She has repeatedly said that due to her trauma suffered at the hands of Shiloh and Harmony
has already broken off her friendship with Sasha for a minor slip of the tongue to her then boyfriend ( now cousin) Cody
How will she react upon learning Drew pursued her for a sexual conquest after having relations with her mother thereby replicating the Harmony-Shiloh-Willow dynamic
Nina will snap and do something to Michael or Drew
Let Jason go at Nina on Michael & Sashas”s behalf
Give Chase and Brook Lynn a baby of their own
Not every story has to be devastating and end in death
I’ve been watching since 1970+ and these are all too old of ideas
Too much out with the old and in with the new
Bring back Dex and Joss the only love story I cared about – nobody had their chemistry!
I could careless since the writers and Frank Valentini fired Roger Howarth
he didn’t have his back in the come back Austin story
I don’t give gh much longer since ratings are falling badly
Blah blah blah….how many incantations of Roger would you be happy with
If they kill off Michael I will be done with this show forever
Bye Felicia…this bs “I’m gonna quit watching if such and such happens” just shows what a fair weather fan you are
We are going to have a new choice with Beyond the Gates
it is no longer my show when they kill off a true legacy character
who has grown up on screen and been a major focus of the whole show for over 25 years
Why do viewers always make the time to “announce” that they’re not watching anymore
Michael wanted to leave maybe he asked them to not replace him
Maybe they feel like it works better to allow him a chance to come back
Jason looks like Sasha’s father keep Jason in Anna’s orbit
there’s about 666 different ways to interpret that statement
but let a Devil throw in a theory here completely out of left field
Should it even appear as though Sonny or Michael have been killed off
you can bet your soul that it only means one thing
Only problem is that how in Hell’s name would you pronounce “Selrahctropwen”?
Of course Cyrus the Virus wouldn’t have the abilities to pull off a scenario like that on his own
never missed one unless it was preempted or if my vcr didn’t record it back in the day
I never wanted to quit the show or thought it was awful
not even during Ron Carvilatti reign as head writer
now have I enjoyed every storyline or every character
so many characters left abruptly and biggest shocker was Kelly Monoco getting fired
this new writing team old or new fired rehired have really been bad this year
I just do not like the current writing team especially after what they put out this year
Hope a new better team comes and save GH in 2025
I want to enjoy and look forward to GH next year
I’m gonna keep my fingers cross and watch
If Brennan is free why can’t Valentin get off scot free too
Michael needs to be recast I can’t even watch Cameron in his Hallmark movies anymore who ever is writing this stuff needs to go
The show is falling apart yes it’s a soap but everyone is miserable
A lifetime viewer it kind of needs to change
you’re going to lose alot of viewers
Please get rid of the Drew and Willow story
They have no chemistry and it’s just gross
You may have been able to pull of this story twenty years ago but not today
I’ll watch them for a minute and then fast forward over the rest of their scenes
Have Michael take the kids and go and let the Drew and Willow story die
I think the WHOLE show could be a WHOLE lot better with Drew gone
surprise exit I can imagine is firing the writers
when you fast foward thru most of the unpopular storylines
it seems almost pointless to consider yourself a fan
Kelly Monaco *gasping in disbelief* and Evan Hofer in favor of ho-hum recasts and returning characters may not have the long term impact you were hoping for
Gonna continue to dvr GH and ff thru the silly
firing some of these actors was straight up idiotic
After 48 years of continually watching GH
As another long time viewer (one who has taken breaks through the years) – one question – How was killing Sam worse than killing Alan
Kelly Monaco *gasping in disbelief* and Evan Hofer
The Lazarus of Lulu was more than ridiculous..she was in a coma for 4 yrs and she awakens as if she just had a nap..REALLY?!
This doesn’t sound great..sounds like a bunch of nonsense..Geo is too old to be BLQ’s son..they should have let her and Chase have a baby..that storyline is stupid..periodt..Michael should have never slept with Sasha especially getting her pregnant..their out to make him look like the bad guy..when Willow started this train rolling..therefore he leaved Carly will be out of he grandkids lives and Nina is in..this is not the move..mo
Not looking forward to these writers plans
Are they actually trying to send GH to its grave
Sasha and Jason no leave sonny alone Chase and Brooklyn just let them be happy let somebody else be gios mother and father leave the veterans that have been here alone and quit bringing back dead people I have watched the show since it began and it is just getting stupid it used to be so good more Hospital time there was always a story now it’s just this person sleeping with that person it’s terrible
I don’t see any chemistry between Jason and Sasha
I PRAY that both Drew slime bag and the weeping Willow both get picked off by someone
I could not even imagine a storyline that would make me like either one of them ever again
They both make me sick and what a total destruction of once good characters
I’ll watch for the sake of watching and maybe some stories will click for me but for the most part…..eh
I really don’t think the show is going to last much longer
These writers have destroyed just about everyone
Please bring back the GH that we all enjoyed watching
the last GOOD head writer thst GH had is now an executive producer at the new CBS soap
I’d hardly call Robert Guza Jnr the last good head writer; we had Garin Wolf for a short-term period of time
and we had Patrick Mulcahey under bullsh*t production
Garin Wolf spent most of his short tenure trying to destroy the entire Spencer family and creating useless characters like the mute chick who walked around Wyndemere half naked in the middle of November
who looked and sounded exactly like a Jacks brother
who from day one started writing all of Port Charles completely out of character
and all of them suddenly hating the one guy they all loved since 1993
Apparently even Valentini thought that was a bridge (over Tricky Dick Nixon Falls) too far
There was a period 15-20 years ago when the show was also on an unwatchable streak
Some day I will get around to watching the Jane Elliott scenes on the dvr
I think that they are not going to replace Michael Corinthos sucks
He has been a big part of the Corinthos family for a very long time and there is still a lot of story that could be told with him in the mix
Hey…here’s an idea: For once and for all
get rid of that AWFUL HOMOPHOBE Natalia and that STOMACH-TURNING SLEAZEBALL Drew!!!!

This week on all-new episodes of General Hospital
now that Brook Lynn (Amanda Setton) has told her grandmother Tracy Quartermaine (Jane Elliot) about the baby she gave up for adoption when she was a teenager
looks like Tracy isn’t about to let this go and confronts Lois (who she never liked very much anyway) as to where Brook Lynn’s son could be
and in the latest ABC promo for the week of May 5-9
it looks like it’s only a matter of time that everyone figures out that Gio (Giovanni Mazza) is Brook Lynn and Dante’s (Dominic Zamprogna) son; especially when Tracy says to Lois
“Brook Lynn doesn’t know where her son is
after his wild night of being drugged on Ketamine (thanks to Nina and Portia)
Drew (Cameron Mathison) is seeking answers and will not stop till he can prove he was set up and to find the culprit (s)
“Do you know who drugged me last night?” Elsewhere
Willow (Katelyn MacMullen) is confronting her mother
Nina (Cynthia Watros) saying that they both know who did this to Drew
Is she truly on to her mother having a hand in this
Rocco (Finn Carr) is found after passing out seemingly from drinking too much at the PCU beach party
Lulu (Alexa Havins) and Dante just admitted they are still in love with one another
Lucky (Jonathan Jackson) tries to talk some sense into Kristina (Kate Mansi)
over finding the legal documents that Alexis (Nancy Lee Grahn) was considering filing to put her daughter into a mental institution
Would Kristina understand that Alexis was trying to save her from potentially facing jail time for mistakenly cutting the brakes to Ric’s (Rick Hearst) car when she was aiming to hurt Ava (Maura West)
but instead her actions landed Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst) and Ric in the hospital
Check out the official GH spoilers for the week below
Take a look at the latest ABC promo below for General Hospital and then weigh-in
Do you think Lois will finally crack and admit to Tracy and or Brook Lynn that Gio is Brook Lynn’s son
Will Drew find out it was Portia and Nina who drugged him

On the latest episode of Maurice Benard’s (Sonny Corinthos) You Tube series, State of Mind
the General Hospital star welcomes Cameron Mathison (Drew Cain
GH) for a very touching and powerful episode
While Mathison’s Drew Cain has become the man you absolutely love to hate currently on GH
as the congressman has become quite duplicitous and despicable in his actions
in real-life Cameron has gone through enough trauma in a short amount of time that would break a lesser man
when Cameron lost his home in the Eaton Fire that took the residences of many in the Altadena
California area as well as in the Pacific Palisades region with the Palisades fire
who is always juggling multiple projects and in-demand
including his on-going role on the ABC daytime drama
shared all of the moments that culminated in a very challenging and sorrowful few years leading up and through the destruction of his beloved home
As Mathison has previously spoke on his own battle with cancer
“My mom had cancer and she passed away
and one of the most important people in my life went through a life-threatening drug scare and addiction and that was incredibly hard and scary
I lost my job at Home and Family when that got canceled
and then after that my wife (Vanessa) of 22-years and I … things just really started falling apart in a very challenging and hurtful way
and then eventually separation and going through a divorce
my dog got cancer and became paralyzed and eventually passed away
my kids moved out for college and then I pulled up on January 8th (2025) to our house in Altadena and it was burning to the ground.”
I had lost my dog and I had lost my house my possessions
I am a very positive and resilient guy … this has been really hard
It’s an interesting and hard to explain kind of loss
It’s very bizarre to explain to people that haven’t been through it
That was sort of the foundation of my life when everything was falling apart around me
In shock over seeing the decimation of his home, Cameron added, “As my life was slipping away in many ways, it was like this foundation for me. It really was and I didn’t realize it. Then as I pulled up (in my car)
It felt like my reality what I know to be true
I lost 2 million dollars and that’s a lot of money for me and my family
There’s the sentimental things … things that my mom gave me
Vanessa had a box of all her dad’s stuff (he had passed away)
“We had been separated now for 1 1/2 to two years
although this experience brought us much closer to together
I was just coming to GH and trying to be normal to do my work.”
While Mathison is fully aware of all of the people who lost their homes
who only had partial insurance or non at all
who are in a worse financial condition then he is
he offered three main practices to get through the difficult and devastating times in life
You can watch Cameron open up to Maurice Benard talking about his career path
the devastating family losses and of course
his beloved home burned to the ground by the Eaton Fire below
what did you think about the emotional turn in the conversation as Cameron noted all he has endured and gone through and how he is trying to keep his head above water in the face of adversity after losing his home
A post shared by Cameron Mathison (@cameronmathison)
Brian Frons called a meeting to be attended virtually by both cast and crew of All My Children and One Life to Live
it was announced that in one fell swoop both soap operas were canceled
and for OLTL that would end its 43-year run
The original replacements for those series are also gone with The Revolution lasting only six months in OLTL’s time slot
and the cooking show The Chew put in AMC’s time slot lasting seven years before exiting the air
A far cry from soap operas that to this day has legions and legions of fans and that lasted four decades
On the latest edition of General Hospital star Maurice Benard’s (Sonny Corinthos) You Tube talk show and mental health series, State of Mind that dropped on Sunday
Cameron talks about his time as Ryan Lavery as Maurice touches upon his time as Nico Kelly on All My Children
Mathison recalls the moment he found out from then All My Children executive producer
Julie Hanan Carruthers (who is now at Beyond the Gates) that the meeting he needed to attend was mandatory; which gave him pause realizing this was the end of the line for the soap on ABC
Benard acknowledged that: “They (ABC) made
a huge mistake cancelling All My Children and One Life to Live
They didn’t know the power of a soap opera audience!” The three-time Daytime Emmy winner also added about ABC daytime’s flimsy attempts at replacement shows
and that’s why it’s difficult to cancel a soap … now
Mathison responded about losing the viewers who watched both AMC and OLTL: “That’s a big chunk of the audience
but on streaming … there’s revenue internationally
It’s a bigger entity than just that time slot
and the fans and the loyalty and what Frank Valentini (executive producer
GH) is doing over there to make sure they get new eyeballs on it
Those people absolutely regret it.” It was Maurice who summed it up best
“I think year’s ago … they knew they messed up!”
Since the cancellations of All My Children and One Life to Live
the mainstream has had a doomsday attitude about the soaps
CBS launched the first new daytime drama in over 25 years on network TV with Beyond the Gates
and that gives some hope that all is not lost to keep the genre vital and still a part of pop culture while maintaining its core fanbase
You can catch Maurice and Cameron’s discussion about the cancellation of All My Children and One Life to Live and so much more below
are you glad that GH’s Maurice Benard spoke up and agreed that what ABC did over 14 years ago was a monumental mistake that forever changed the daytime television landscape

got a welcome donation of agricultural supplies valued $9 million to assist farmers impacted during Hurricane Beryl’s passage in July
were provided by the Jamaica Agricultural Chemical Association (JACA)
Addressing the handover ceremony at the Ministry’s offices in Kingston
said he was pleased with the timing of the donation
for people who are not on the front line to think that all is well and to quickly move on two or three weeks after
We appreciate that the recovery of our agricultural sector is going to take time; it’s going to take significant effort and partnerships,” he stated
Green emphasised that the Government has been strategic in its response to the extensive damage wreaked by Hurricane Beryl
We’re looking to build back and to build back stronger
and we’re also looking to continue to do the sustainable part of building our agricultural sector by continuing our projects
and this [donation of supplies] helps us in that regard
The more resources that we have pooling into the recovery effort
the less resources we have to look at from our other programmes,” Minister Green said
said the Association is committed to supporting the agricultural sector
as farmers are the backbone of the economy
“Beryl was a devastating test but it also revealed the strength and resilience of our people
We believe that one of the most important lessons is the power of unity in the face of adversity
have set aside those differences to work for the common good,” he stated
Dunkley pointed out that the entity’s donation aims to address the urgent needs of farmers
noting that the relief efforts are guided by the principles of inclusivity and partnership
“We have conducted first-hand assessments of the damage
engaged with key stakeholders and committed to donating essential supplies
We are grateful for the leadership of the Ministry of Agriculture
RADA (Rural Agricultural Development Authority) and the Beryl relief project
we can rebuild the agricultural sector and ensure a stronger
more resilient future for Jamaica,” he added
Head of the Hurricane Beryl Recovery Taskforce
also expressed gratitude to the Association for the donation
but it’s good to see the Association contributing to the sector
a partnership that exists within the sector between the input suppliers

The new MoU aims to boost the growth of cellular agriculture across Japan and the broader Asia-Pacific area
“Establishing long-lasting ties with key stakeholders and other associations regionally and globally is a key asset in the strategic development of the industry for APAC-SCA,” Peter Yu
Program Director APAC Society for Cellular Agriculture
“Through this MoU we reverberate the message and necessity of a key tenet of the industry – global collaboration,” Yu said
JACA will have enhanced access to the global cell-cultured industry network
the APAC-SCA will increase its role in guiding regulatory progress in Japan
Both bodies are set to collaborate on endeavors like knowledge dissemination and the formulation of a risk communication strategy for their members
an industry-academia-government collaboration
has been working to create rules for production and distribution of cell-based food products
stressed that “Japan should leverage its global presence in food and regenerative medicine area to show its presence in cellular agriculture field.”
The MoU follows the February announcement from Japan’s Prime Minister, Fumio Kishida
who said the country is moving toward developing a cell-based agriculture industry focused on cultivated meat and fish to help reduce the country’s carbon footprint
According to the industry think tank GFI APAC
it is currently possible to sell cultivated meat in Japan
depending on the interpretation of existing laws
GFI APAC says that regulatory opening puts Japan in a position to become a world leader for cultivated meat and attract attention from international cultivated meat startups
The framework being developed through the recent MoU and the government’s plan will help move the sector forward
The cellular agriculture industry is moving closer to seeing more deregulation. Currently, only Singapore’s Food Agency has approved cultivated meat for sale. But last week, two California cultivated meat producers, Eat Just and Upside Foods
announced they had received label approval from the USDA — the final step before the agency grants full approval to begin production and distribution across the U.S

The Winter Universiade in Jaca struck a celebratory tone straight from the start of the event
as captured here during the opening ceremonies
Spain hosted its first Universiade in 1981 in Jaca and did not disappoint as the country raised the bar big-time for future World University Games and beyond
In the Huesca province of the Aragonese Pyrenees
Jaca welcomed an eyebrow-raising 394 athletes from 28 countries – with Mexico making its Winter Universiade debut – to the 10th edition of the Games
which were hosted in conjunction with the four neighbouring resorts of Candanchu
More than 200 journalists were accredited to cover the Universiade
which drew some of the world’s most renowned athletes at the time
including Alpine skiing greats Valery Tsyganov and Marina Junusova of the Soviet Union; Peter Popangelov and Vladi Boiarintzev of Bulgaria; Italy’s Claudia Giordani
All took home gold medals for their respective countries
which would also go on to aggressively yet unsuccessfully bid for the Winter Olympic Games in 1998
had no intention of organising a mediocre Games
From the Universiade’s first ever mascot
to the Soviet journalist who vanished from the press centre only to resurface after the Games seeking political asylum
FISU Emeritus Honorary Member Fritz Holzer recalled how eventful the 25 February to 4 March Universiade was
“FISU officials had the opportunity to shake hands with the King (Juan Carlos),” Holzer said
“It was a period marked by some political troubles with the Basques in Spain
An avalanche buried some of the village and they had to wait for a cleaning of the roofs
so the 30-km skiers had to go six times around the same slope.”
was the second Winter World University Games to be held in an odd-number year after Livigno 1975
The Winter Universiade has been held every other year since

Johannesburg witnessed a pivotal moment in its battle against crime
was inaugurated in a ceremony held at the Johannesburg Stadium
This marked the start of his commitment to making the city safer for all its residents
who officially stepped into the Chief of Police role after serving in an acting capacity
becomes the fourth Chief of Police in the history of the JMPD
Johannesburg continues to struggle with high crime rates
his leadership is viewed as crucial in turning the tide on the rising crime statistics
His promises of reform and improvement were met with optimism from attendees
including Gauteng Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni
Jaca declared his readiness to tackle the ongoing issues of criminal activity in Johannesburg
The city is grappling with the persistent threats of violence
According to recent police crime statistics
Johannesburg has seen a steady rise in crime over the past few years
Residents and business owners are increasingly concerned about their safety
emphasizing that public safety is a top priority for his leadership
He stressed the importance of having a police force that instils confidence
This reinforced the need for visible and effective law enforcement to restore order
Mayor Dada Morero publicly pledged his full support for Jaca
He stated that crime would not be allowed to dominate Johannesburg
and we will break the back of corruption because no city can thrive when crime wears a uniform,” Morero affirmed
This underlines the city’s commitment to a safer future

One of Jaca’s key strategies in addressing the rising crime rate is the reinforcement of the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department through recruitment and better resourcing. With the city’s budget allocation in place
Jaca revealed that a new recruitment drive will begin in January 2026
The goal is to recruit 600 new officers to join the force
This would significantly increase the department’s operational capacity
The recruitment will be complemented by the graduation of 120 police academy students in December 2025
This marks another step in bolstering the police force
Jaca is also keen to increase the department’s presence on the ground
making sure that officers are fully equipped and prepared for the challenges they face
Although Jaca acknowledged the financial constraints affecting the city
he emphasized that efforts to recruit and train new officers would go ahead as planned
“The resources are being directed towards building a stronger and more capable force.”
Another major focus for Jaca is the incorporation of advanced technology to support officers in their daily operations
He noted that the JMPD is in the process of acquiring body cameras for all officers
These cameras will help improve accountability
protect both officers and citizens and provide transparency in police interactions
While Jaca confirmed that the full rollout of body cameras would begin in the new financial year in July 2025
some officers will receive their cameras before then
Jaca’s administration is also working on acquiring more advanced operational equipment
The aim is to ensure that officers are well-equipped to deal with the evolving nature of crime in the city
This includes tackling high-risk situations such as gang violence and public disturbances
A recurring theme in Jaca’s inauguration speech was the importance of community collaboration
Recognizing that law enforcement alone cannot combat crime
he called for a united front where police work in close partnership with local communities
Jaca believes the fight against crime will be more effective
“We need to empower our communities,” Jaca stated
they will be more likely to assist us in gathering information
and creating safer spaces.” He urged Johannesburg’s residents to play an active role in the safety of their neighbourhoods
He emphasized that a safer Johannesburg requires everyone to contribute
While Jaca’s Chief of Police appointment is seen as a positive step forward for the city
he is fully aware of the immense challenges ahead
coupled with the complex and multifaceted nature of crime in Johannesburg
mean that progress will require sustained effort and cooperation from all sectors of society
Jaca’s leadership promises hope for a safer
With his commitment to strengthening the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department
improving police accountability through technology
there is a renewed sense of optimism that the city’s crime problem can be effectively tackled

*Christian Niño currently works at Petronas and Martin Zubiri works at Pan American Energy
exploring for hydrocarbons in the deep waters of the Gulf of Guinea
east of the São Tomé and Príncipe (STP) islands
was not regarded as very attractive by the industry
The main reasons were the uncertainty regarding the presence of source rocks and the premise that this whole area was on oceanic crust and
would make it difficult to mature any source rock
Not to mention the water depths being more than 2,200 m
with the associated logistical and operational challenges
Galp is present in 3 exploration blocks in STP
Galp signed the PSC for Block 6 in November 2015 and is currently beginning the third phase of the initial three phases of the exploration term
Galp and Kosmos Energy acquired a large 3D broadband seismic of approximately 16,000 km2 in a former partnership over Block 5
oil samples from seeps were taken on the islands of São Tomé (Ubabudo) and Príncipe (Agua Clara)
The planning and drilling of the Jaca-1 well were the main activities during the second exploration phase
The primary objective of the well was to test a NW-SE elongated 4-way to 3-way dip closure of Turonian age
The well also had two secondary stratigraphic objectives of Campanian age
Another objective of the well was to drill the postulated Turonian and Cenomanian source rocks
The well was spudded in water depths of approximately 2,550 m and safely drilled under a Technical Service Agreement with partner Shell in remote operating conditions to a total depth of 5,658 m MD
The thermal regime observed at the well was slightly higher than the pre-drill estimation
This is particularly noteworthy as no wells had been drilled in a purely oceanic crustal domain setting in this part of the Gulf of Guinea before
Jaca-1 drilled a thick Upper Cretaceous sandy section of more than 700 m
with approximately 500 m of high-quality reservoir sands (Figure 2)
MDT data confirmed the presence of four thin hydrocarbon-bearing zones whilst several fluid samples were collected (oil and water)
with GOR’s around 1,000 scf/bbl and no signs of biodegradation
Geochemical analyses suggest that they were generated by an Upper Cretaceous marine siliciclastic source rock
probably the same source rock facies that generated the oil at the Ubabudo oil seep in the São Tomé Island
Jaca-1 also drilled an Upper Cretaceous marine source rock
it has been correlated to the oils recovered from the Jaca-1 reservoir sands higher up
Petroleum systems modeling suggests that the kitchen is located towards the Campo and Kriby fracture zones in the northwest
Regional hydrocarbon migration is to the southeast
so the oil found in Jaca-1 has therefore proven mid to long lateral migration in addition to vertical migration up into the Campanian
the well did not find a blocky reservoir at the main target in the Turonian
but encountered thinly bedded sands instead
Even though good porosities were observed in these sands
permeabilities turned out to be at the lower end of the spectrum and were water-wet
The well was therefore TD’d before drilling the postulated mid-Cenomanian source rock
Jaca-1 proved the presence of a working petroleum system in the deep-water setting of the Gulf of Guinea
with the kitchen being located mostly on oceanic crust
Excellent Upper Cretaceous reservoir sands were also confirmed
with light oil being able to migrate both laterally from the source kitchen to the northwest as well as upwards to reach the Campanian reservoirs
