I drove to New Jersey for the annual Mid-Atlantic Independent Team camp this past summer
I discover a prospect I hadn’t seen much of
Jaen Chatman did just that for me this summer
impressing me and leaving a massive first impression on myself and several high-major college coaches
Chatman is a 6-foot-2 guard out of Blair Academy in Blairstown
He plays his AAU ball with the New York City-based PSA Cardinals squad
He’s everything you’d expect out of an east coast guard
but one aspect of his game that has seen growth over the last few months is his shooting from behind the arc.
You knew after seeing his surgance this past summer
that it would take a successful fall for him to have a breakout
Chatman went off at the Jordan Holiday Classic
Averaged 15 points and 6.5 assists per game and shot 50% from the field
He proved his worth in front of plenty of high-major talent and it has resulted in offers from plenty of programs over the last few weeks
and Xavier,” are amongst those heavily involved in his recruitment
Xavier was his first high-major scholarship offer and they’ve continued to remain active in his recruitment as more competition continues to enter the mix.
I liked how they communicated with me consistently and came out to see me multiple times
I can tell he’s really about business and is a good man,” Chatman told Stockrisers.com
I recently watched them for the first time when they played Kansas.”
In addition to the programs that Chatman mentioned
he has drawn plenty of new suitors in his recruitment.
Amongst the new suitors are ‘Syracuse
and BYU’ none of which have extended an offer just yet
have entered the mix and have positioned themselves nicely so far
who has had a dialogue with Chatman recently
I like Alex [Kline] who has been in contact with me
He’s a very genuine dude and they want me to come down for a visit soon.”
Chatman told Stockrisers.com he likely won’t take any visits till after the season
He’s focused on making a run at a state title and a national title
His development and making a run with Blair Academy is his main goal
which is the same thing his backcourt mate Deron Rippey Jr
It takes hard work but making the necessary improvements needed to continue an uptick and Chatman says he must continue to improve his playmaking as well as his decisions at the end of games
“Dealing with pressure and my end of the game decisions,” he said
He continues to rise rapidly in the 2026 class and I expect him to continue rising

Ben Tulett secured ninth place in the Clásica Jaén during his season debut
The Team Visma | Lease a Bike rider showed strong form on the Spanish gravel sectors
who spent a significant part of the race leading the chase for the Brit
For much of Team Visma | Lease a Bike’s lineup
the Clásica Jaén marked their first road race of 2025
There was little time for a gentle return to racing rhythm
as the Spanish event—often compared to Strade Bianche—featured ten gravel sectors and 2,500 meters of climbing
Attacks from Tim Wellens and Egan Bernal failed to gain traction
but a move from eventual winner Michał Kwiatkowski proved decisive
Van Aert took control at the front of the favorites’ group
significantly cutting into Kwiatkowski’s lead
Tulett impressed with his strength but couldn’t bridge the gap to the lone leader
The Brit ultimately sprinted to ninth place
🇪🇸 #ClásicaJaénA top ten place for Ben after a hard fight! 👏🏼 pic.twitter.com/4nogikmvWu
so I’ve been looking forward to racing miles again
We aimed to get as many riders as possible through the first gravel sectors
and today’s race gives me confidence for the weeks ahead
Van Aert saw positives in his own season debut
“I hit my limit several times in the final”
I think we were chasing a bit from behind as a team
I trained hard over the winter and know when I need to peak
It was tough to be at my best immediately in such a demanding race
but it felt good to be back in the peloton.”
Tulett and Van Aert will line up again on Wednesday for the Volta ao Algarve. Sepp Kuss, Tiesj Benoot, and Loe van Belle, who also raced in Clásica Jaén, will join them in Portugal. Additionally, Jonas Vingegaard is set to make his season debut there.

Former Tour de France winner Egan Bernal remained positive on Monday despite breaking his collarbone in a crash, just as he was regaining top form.
After winning the Colombian road race and time trial titles earlier this month
Bernal was caught in a mass crash at the Clasica Jaen late in the race
which was won by his Ineos teammate Michal Kwiatkowski
who won the Tour in 2019 and the Giro d’Italia in 2021
has been fighting his way back after a near-fatal training crash in Colombia in 2022
His recent national titles marked his first victories since the accident
"I was feeling really strong and obviously I'm sad to have crashed
but at the same time the way I felt during the race gave me a lot of confidence and motivation to keep working hard
The season ahead is very long," Bernal said after being released from the hospital
"I've felt very good in the three races that I have done
so I just have to keep working and I hope to be back soon."
Bernal had been instrumental in setting up Kwiatkowski before the crash ended his race
including the one-day Strade Bianche and the Tirreno-Adriatico stage race
ahead of a potential shot at a second Giro d'Italia title
"Egan will remain under the expert care of the INEOS Grenadiers medical team
and a comprehensive recovery plan will be implemented to support his return to training and racing," the Ineos website stated

Syracuse basketball coaches are in consistent contact with fast-rising 2026 three-star combo guard Jaen Chatman
The 6-foot-2 Chatman is a junior at the Blair Academy in Blairstown
N.Y.-based PSA Cardinals in Nike’s EYBL league
In an interview with national analyst Patrick O'Brien, the director of operations at Phenom Hoops, Chatman says that "Syracuse has been in constant communication." I'm not aware of the Orange staff having offered a scholarship to Chatman at this juncture
but I'll certainly monitor his recruitment moving forward
One of his Blair teammates is 2026 five-star point guard Deron Rippey Jr.
who holds a scholarship offer from the 'Cuse and unofficially visited the Hill in late February of 2024 on Jim Boeheim Day
The 6-foot-2 Rippey is a priority recruiting target for the Orange, and his dad has told me that his son is highly interested in taking an official visit to Syracuse basketball sometime this year. Toward the beginning of 2025, Rippey told top On3 national reporter Joe Tipton that nine schools are in the most consistent contact with him

Bernal was racing at the front of Clásica Jaén when the crash occurred
Less than two weeks after taking his first victories in nearly four years
Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers) suffered a broken collarbone in a crash in the closing kilometers of the Clásica Jáen
The former Tour de France winner had been active throughout the day he and was riding with a chase group behind his teammate and eventual winner Michal Kwiatkowski when he slid out in a righthand bend on a descent
Bernal did not finish the race and was transported to a nearby hospital
the Ineos Grenadiers provided an update on social media confirming the collarbone fracture
"He will remain under the expert care of our medical team, and a comprehensive recovery plan will be implemented to support his return to training and racing," the team said in a post on X
which runs on gravel roads and has been likened to a Spanish Strade Bianche
was intended to be part of a spring campaign culminating in a run at the GC at the Giro d'Italia
Collarbone breaks tend to result in about two weeks mostly off the bike (though some riders manage a bit of indoor training)
which puts his return in time for Tirreno-Adriatico in some doubt
Missing Tirreno would be less than ideal for the Giro
Bernal's injury is an especially bitter turn of events so soon after his encouraging showing at the Colombian national championships
where he took both the road and time trial titles in a promising show of form
Bernal had been winless since before his life-threatening crash in 2022
when he broke numerous bones colliding with a parked bus on a training ride in Colombia
it was unclear whether he could continue as a professional cyclist
He landed multiple top 10s in WorldTour events in 2024
and he kicked 2025 off with his dominant showing at Colombian nationals
Monday's race in Jaén was his first opportunity to show off the Colombian national champion's jersey
It remains to be seen how long of a recovery he can expect from this latest setback before he dons the jersey again
but Bernal seemed upbeat nonetheless in a statement
"The way we raced was great and it was really nice to be part of a strong team
I was feeling really strong and obviously I’m sad to have crashed
"I’ve felt very good in the three races that I have done
Michal Kwiatkowski pulled off a classy solo victory at Clasica Jaen following over 60 kilometres on the attack
The Grenadier capped off an aggressive performance from the team in Spain
pushing clear with the winning acceleration at 12km to go
The foundations had been laid by a number of attacks and accelerations from Kwiatkowski’s teammates across a punishing course littered with gravel sectors
Ben Turner and Axel Laurance all rode their way into a select chasing group
Swift and Oscar Rodriguez were all caught up in crashes during the day
Following checks Bernal was diagnosed with a fractured clavicle
Kwiatkowski moved into an established three-man move alongside Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates – XRG) and Clement Alleno (Burgos Burpellet BH)
which pulled clear of the pack heading into the final 60km
Bernal was very active and helped monitor and shut down accelerations behind
Eventually Kwiatkowski and McNulty were joined by original breakaway rider Ibon Ruiz (Kern Pharma)
with the trio pulling out a strong advantage
winning by a margin of 26 seconds over lead chaser Isaac Del Toro (UAE Team Emirates – XRG)
ReactionMichal Kwiatkowski: "I always have to believe that anything is possible
"The pace was super hard from the second sector and I didn’t expect it so early on
Later on it was just a small group and we had a lot of numbers
I was just going with the McNulty move and get to the finish
I want to dedicate this victory to my family after a tough couple of months
Isaac Del Toro and Ibon Ruiz trail home a distant second and third in Spanish gravel one-day race
The Polish rider was part of an initial breakaway but made his winning move through the deep gravel sector inside the final 12km and crossed the line 26 seconds ahead of his nearest rival in Úbeda
Ruiz had been in the breakaway for most of the race
was forced to settle for third place at 42 seconds behind the day's winner
"I always have to believe that winning is possible
The pace was pretty hard from the second sector and I didn't expect that
but it was just a small group and we had a lot of support from my team
everyone was racing perfectly and we knew it well," Kwiatkowski said after his win
"I was going with the move with [Brandon] McNulty and get to the finish
I started racing in Australia in January and had pretty good condition
but I was always missing something to get the victory
"I spent the last two weeks training in Mallorca
I know how much sacrifice it is for my family
I think it would have been another from my team because we rode great today."
Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) was initially part of the breakaway with Kwiatkowski and Ruiz but suffered an untimely puncture under 15km to go over the gravel sector and was forced off his bike to receive neutral wheel support
He lost valuable time and was reabsorbed into the chase group as Kwiatkowski and Ruiz forged ahead in pursuit of the day's win
UAE Team Emirates-XRG moved its riders to the front of the main 10-rider chase group with Del Torro and Igor Arrieta setting the pace as McNulty drifted to the back of the group to recover from his efforts
Kwiatkowski attacked with 12km to go and quickly opened up a gap on Ruiz
The group behind them split apart at the same time as Del Toro attacked in his own attempt to bridge to the leaders on the road
Jordan Labrosse (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale)
Eric Antonio Fagúndez (Burgos Burpellet BH)
followed by Arrieta tried to respond but ended up forming the main chase group
McNulty struggled to stay with the surges and was distanced
Bernal's Ineos Grenadiers teammates Connor Swift and Ben Turner dropped back to support him following the accident
A warm dry day greeted the 108-strong peloton for the fourth edition of the Clásica Jaén
almost double last year's total when the organisers were forced to reduce the gravel segments drastically because of heavy rainfall
With the gravel segments all concentrated in the second part of the race
the main contenders opted to let a break of non-favourites gain a significant margin early on.
As the course wended its way through the olive groves of eastern Andalucia
seven riders went clear: Clément Alleno (Burgos Burpellet BH)
Julen Arriolabengoa (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA)
Edgar Curto and Ricard Fitó (Illes Balears-Arabay)
Adrián Benito (Selección Española U23) and Ibon Ruiz (Equipo Kern Pharma)
the seven had picked up a maximum advantage of five minutes
Visma and Decathlon-AG2R La Mondiale had already reduced that advantage to under four and it began to drop even more rapidly
As the break splintered under the fast-rising pressure from behind
a dramatic acceleration by Michal Kwiatkowski (Ineos Grenadiers) and Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates) some 50 kilometres from the line seemingly caught Wout van Aert by surprise
forcing Visma's Sepp Kuss and Ben Tulett to chase.
The Pole and American quickly caught Alleno from the break and bore down on Arriola-Bengoa and Ruiz
the bunch squeezed down to just 20 riders and Visma - by now down to just Van Aert
a fall for Tulett as he continued to chase on a right-hand bend made it harder to reduce a gap of a minute on the five leaders: Kwiatkowski
further suggesting that Van Aert was not in great shape
and was happy to follow wheels even as other dangerous riders like Bernal
Isaac del Toro (UAE Team Emirates - XRG) and Nicolas Prodhomme (Decathlon-AG2R La Mondiale) shadowed the American
Alleno was dropped from the break just as the five leaders reached the longest sector of sterrato, the 6.2 kilometre Guadalupe section and the 20-strong chase group reformed.
UAE and Ineos not only had a man ahead with McNulty and Kwiatkowski but also had the most in the chasing group with four apiece
whilst Visma continued to find themselves at a numerical disadvantage
having only Kuss and Turner to back the top favourite Van Aert
while a searing acceleration by Tulett changed the narrative behind yet again
only for Bernal and Tim Wellens (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) to briefly test the waters.
When Van Aert then took charge of the 14 riders chasing the trio of breakaways
driving hard as the race headed towards the finish for the first time
it looked as if the top pre-race favourite had opted to take on a domestique's role.
Additional support from Decathlon-AG2R Jordan Labrosse added much-needed strength to the pursuit
but the small army of UAE riders flanking Van Aert as they reached Ubeda with 34 kilometres to go could hardly have been encouraging for the Belgian
Van Aert then sat up as they headed out of the city on a neverending series of minor climbs
sparking a series of attempts to bring across to the tenacious trio of leaders
but each attack was cancelled out and still Kwiatkowski
McNulty and Ruiz remained with a 30-second advantage as they hit the last 20 kilometres

Belgian star finishes 39th in Spanish version of Strade Bianche after working for Ben Tulett
The battle for victory in Spain's only sterrato Classic was continuing
but the top pre-race favourite was no longer part of it
There had been much talk beforehand of Van Aert's unfinished business with Jaén after an untimely encounter between his rear tyre and a large nail in one of the early gravel sectors of the 2024 race had put paid to his chances
Van Aert had already sent a few alarm bells ringing some 70 kilometres out when he drifted out of the back of the chasing group after a searing drive by Tim Wellens (UAE Team Emirates-XRG)
The doubts persisted for another half hour
but then when Van Aert made a sustained effort to keep his teammate Ben Tulett in contention 30 kilometres further on
it was obvious that the decision he was switching into a domestique's role
The Belgian star was somewhat critical of his team's performance overall
saying that after such a dangerous pair of rivals as Michal Kwiatkowski (Ineos Grenadiers) and Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) had attacked and made contact with the early break
Visma-Lease a Bike were left "chasing the facts" - in other words
Van Aert himself was not in a position to go for the victory
"I had the feeling that Ben was our best man
but he lacked some confidence," Van Aert said afterwards
"That's why I said to him to save himself for the final and that I'd tried to do something for him
Tulett finally claimed ninth after being overly isolated in the finish, and Van Aert himself said that once the race had begun to take shape
"I was able to stay up there when the initial selection started
we missed the beat too often and we were left chasing the facts," Van Aert said
He had been held up by a crash early on and had had to waste some energy
but he also stated categorically that "with good legs that wouldn't have been a problem:
"I tried to tell Ben a few times that he should really attack
but without asking he was already riding in front," Van Aert told Belgian media
"He was riding so hard that I just had to get on his wheel
we still had a small chance of victory.”
A mammoth seven-hour training ride in Mallorca last week sparked speculation that Van Aert might have gone too hard in the build-up to Jaén
road racing with sections is anything but straightforward even under the best of circumstances.
so it might have been better to have some more races under my belt before I came here," he told Nieuwsblad after completing his first road event since crashing out of the Vuelta a España last season
"I already have some endurance from the cyclocross racing

'He will remain under the expert care of our medical team
and a comprehensive recovery plan will be implemented to support his return to training and racing' confirm Ineos Grenadiers in medical update
The Colombian Champion and former Tour de France winner was forced to abandon the race and taken to a nearby hospital to assess and treat his injuries
Bernal was part of a 10-rider chase group behind his solo teammate Michal Kwiatkowski when he crashed with 12km to go in the 169km race in Úbeda
Also in the chase group were his teammates Connor Swift and Ben Turner
who dropped back to support him after the crash
Ineos Grenadiers released an official medical update on social media:
"Following a thorough assessment at the hospital this evening after his crash at Clásica Jaén
Egan has been diagnosed with a fractured clavicle
He will remain under the expert care of our medical team
and a comprehensive recovery plan will be implemented to support his return to training and racing."
Bernal was released from hospital following his treatment and later made a statement saying that while crashing was upsetting
"I was really happy to start racing again in Europe
especially with my new Colombian jersey and also starting with a victory from Kwiato
the way I felt during the race gave me a lot of confidence and motivation to keep working hard
"I’ve felt very good in the three races that I have done
Bernal had considered giving up his professional cycling career following the accident in which he rode head-first into a stopped city bus while training on his time trial bike
he has slowly worked his way back into race fitness over the past two seasons.
Bernal won the Tour de France in 2019 and the Giro d'Italia in 2021
he secured third overall at the Volta a Catalunya
Clásica Jaén was Bernal's first European race of the season with Ineos Grenadiers and he was also expected to race at Vuelta Ciclista Andalucía-Ruta del Sol
While Ineos Grenadiers confirmed Bernal has a fractured collarbone
they have not yet confirmed the necessary recovery time or a possible return to training or competition
Bernal had been in a buoyant mood at the start of the Clásica Jaén
discussing how happy he was to have won again after 1,347 days in the Colombian National Championships
"It was stunning to be able to do that again
and even more to do so in a race which I always wanted to win," Bernal had said
"I'm going to be able to celebrate that all year thanks to the [national champion's] jersey I can wear now."
At the Clásica start Bernal had singled out Cristian Alonso
the Ineos team helper who has been an integral part of his support network ever since he joined the team
for special thanks in the long recovery process
He also highlighted the contributions of former team doctor Xabier Artetxe
The series of searing attacks by Bernal late on in the Clásica Jaén added to the general sense of how good his current condition was
if his teammate Kwiatkowski had begun to flag
Bernal could have tried for a third victory in 2025
his late crash and exit from the race put paid to any chance of that
It is not known yet how the accident happened
but initial images on social media suggest that Bernal skidded heavily and at speed on a sweeping righthand downhill with around 12 kilometres to go
No other riders appear to have been caught up in the crash
As Ineos riders crossed the finishing line in the long cobbled avenue of Cristo Rey in central Ubeda
their delight at Kwiatkowski's success at winning was obvious
But the celebrations were notably tempered
by the sadness and concern for Bernal and the extent of his injuries after the late crash
I just saw that he was flying today," Kwiatkowski told reporters
"From sector two onwards he was trying to explode the race
so I just went one time but he was keen and ready to go as well
Former World Champion takes first triumph in 18 months in one-day Classic
too - being able to triumph alone after a 60-kilometre breakaway and with rivals snapping at his heels all the way to the line
remains a very special moment all the same
right now in Ineos Grenadiers - present in numbers throughout the race on the front
and with new teammate Axel Laurance underlining their success with a fifth place at the finish in Jaén - "riders are greedy to win."
each rider and team member," Kwiatkowski said
someone else from our team would have taken the victory
"I saw everybody was greedy to get the win
the staff were helping me out on the radio as well
Kwiatkowski was repeatedly asked about Bernal after the Colombian's dramatic late crash
but post-race winner's ceremonies and interviews meant he could initially add little beyond expressing concern for his teammate and wishing him a speedy recovery.
He also pointed out that Bernal had been in top condition during the race
before his untimely exit some 12 kilometres from the line
Ineos Grenadiers later confirmed that Bernal sustained a broken collarbone in the crash and was taken to a local hospital for treatment
"From sector two [of gravel] onwards he was trying to explode the race
But the inherent risks in any off-road race
were also part of his motivation to try and go clear from distance
"I did the recon on Sunday and I could see that it was so sketchy
I knew I didn't want to be in a big peloton in sector three
because there was the possibility of crashing
"Together with Brandon" - McNulty (UAE Team Emirates)
only for the American to puncture in the finale - "we took the risks together and we had a common goal
go harder and then ease back a little more when the road allowed
so it was one of those races where you never know what can happen."
Kwiatkowski had the potentially unlucky race number 13
something he said had almost certainly never happened in his career
which began as a road pro way back in 2010 with Caja Rural in Spain
"I said to myself this wasn't a race where I wanted to have bad luck
but maybe those two punctures early on were when I got my bad luck out of the way."
There were also moments where fortune appeared to be on his side when McNulty punctured late on
it was difficult to know what that turn of events really meant in terms of his own chances
although he certainly knew that it would mean a much more insistent chase by UAE.
in the shape of a rampaging Isaac del Toro who came within less than a minute of the Pole by the finish
a former winner of Strade Bianche in 2017 and in 2014
had the form and racecraft to stay out front
"I knew they had the numbers with [UAE racer] Tim Wellens too
to start chasing and that made me more scared than I had been about having to beat McNulty in a sprint," Kwiatkowski said.
McNulty didn't know the corners as well as I did
after 18 months without a win and a 2024 season that was poleaxed mid-way through because of a back injury
claiming his first victory since a stage of the 2023 Tour de France was too good an opportunity to miss
"These days I'm not winning so often," Kwiatkowski - a former World Champion who has triumphed in Milan-San Remo and Amstel Gold (twice) in his time - pointed out.
"To get this victory I had to work hard for a very long time after my injury," he added
I've been in Australia training and racing and I was supposed to be with my family
so instead I was missing them and they were missing me
and I'm sure my family were getting emotional as well at home when I won."
after a lacklustre 2024 and plenty of speculation the team was finding it difficult to repeat previous success
some early triumphs in 2025 are more than welcome for Ineos as well.
"You can see they [his teammates] are hungry to win races
not look at the future or past and sooner or later it pays off
but it's a long process and this victory is a confirmation that we are going well
We missed out on a victory in Australia but now - we just have to keep going."
Belgian starts season in Clásica Jaén before racing Volta ao Algarve with Jonas Vingegaard
Wout van Aert will start his road season next week at the Clásica Jaén
taking a similar path to the Classics as he did in 2024
The Spanish one-day race is relatively new on the calendar but has already brought in a field of WorldTour teams stacked with top riders
Tadej Pogačar won the Clásica Jaén in 2023
the race has ten gravel sectors and a steep climb to the finish in Úbeda
"We thought it would be a good idea to include the Clásica Jaén and the Volta ao Algarve in my program again," Van Aert said in a post on his team's website
varied races where I can immediately test myself
A gravel race always makes my heart beat a little faster
"Last year was my first time riding these races
It turned out to be the perfect preparation for the Flemish opening weekend
I finished third in Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and won Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne."
Van Aert punctured late in the race and finished 45th in the Clásica Jaén behind solo winner Oier Lazkano (Movistar) - the last of the finishers
However, he had better luck in the Volta ao Algarve where he won a stage and finished seventh overall
This year, Van Aert will be joined by Jonas Vingegaard in the Volta ao Algarve line-up
with the last of five stages a 19.6km time trial ending on the Alto do Malhão
"The Volta ao Algarve has a bit of everything," Van Aert said
"There are a few stages where I see opportunities to go for the win
but the main goal is to take another step in my preparation for the big spring classics
we'll also aim for the overall victory with Jonas
I'm looking forward to racing my first road races of the season."

Excellent win for Barça in the Palau Blaugrana with Tino Pérez's team defeating Jaén 4-2 thanks in part to a brilliant first half performance
Martel and Fits were enough to the take the points with keeper Pau López also impressive after the dismissal of Dídac
The blaugranes are now level on points with Inter at the top of the table ahead of their meeting with third place Peñíscola on Saturday
The start of the contest was a reflection of what was to come
Barça had the upper hand but it was not until the 10th minute that Antonio volleyed the home side ahead
scoring for the fourth game in a row on 14 minutes
Two minutes later came the goal of the evening as Fits lifted the ball skilfully over the keeper after an excellent pass from Khalid
Antonio grabbed a second for himself and a fourth for Barça
With 16 minutes left keeper Dídac received his marching orders and with Pau López in goal
The same player scored a second for his team with three minutes remaining but a solid defensive display from the blaugranes saw them hold on for a valuable win

CONFIRMED: Bernal fractures clavicle in high-speed crash
Kwiatkowski hangs on after McNulty punctures late
Kuss and Van Aert suffer in wild road season debuts
Michal Kwiatkowski powered to victory on Spain’s white roads in a wild edition of the Jaén Interior race after an unlucky Brandon McNulty punctured out of the lead group with under 15km to go
The American looked the strongest in a three-man lead group, holding a 55-second advantage over a chasing pack led by pre-race favorite Wout van Aert and Visma-Lease a Bike
But just as McNulty seemed poised to fight for the win
With the team car following behind the chasing group
McNulty had no choice but to float back and watch the race disappear up the road

— La Flamme Rouge (@laflammerouge16) February 17, 2025
Behind him, UAE Emirates-XRG teammate Isaac del Toro pounced out of the lead group
but it was too late to challenge for the win
Kwiatkowski — a two-time winner of Strade Bianche — managed his effort well during the monster 60km attack to hang on for his first road win since the 2022 Amstel Gold Race
It was a challenging race contested on dry
racing for the first time on pavement since crashing out of last year’s Vuelta a España
debuting in Europe with his freshly minted Colombian national road champion’s jersey
was caught up in a horrific high-speed spill
In what’s a latest blow for the Colombian superstar
Bernal was looking sharp at the front of the main chase group when race footage captured his fall coming down a descent leading to a key climbing sector
The images were partially blocked by vegetation
so it was unclear exactly what caused the crash
It appeared his front tire slipped out as he swept through the right-hander
“I was really happy to start racing again in Europe
especially with my new Colombian jersey and also starting with a victory from Kwiato,” Bernal said after leaving the hospital
“The way we raced was great and it was really nice to be part of a strong team
“I was feeling really strong and obviously I’m sad to have crashed
the season (ahead) is very long,” he said
“I’ve felt very good in the three races that I have done
so I just have to keep working and I hope to be back soon.”
Team officials said Bernal will “remain under the expert care of our medical team
and a comprehensive recovery plan will be implemented to support his return to training and racing.”
Bernal was putting the Giro d’Italia at the center of his plans for 2025
and with the season’s first grand tour nearly three months away
a start there should still be likely if there are no major complications

Wout van Aert and Sepp Kuss (Visma-Lease a Bike) kicked off their road season at the gravel classic
but the Visma-Lease a Bike stars weren’t in the mix for victory
Pre-race favorite Van Aert realized he didn’t have the legs to contend for the win and dropped out of contention with about 30km to go
“I was at my limit several times in the final
He was our best option,” Van Aert told Sporza
“It’s a shame we spent too much time reacting instead of racing
That meant we had to chase more than control
Van Aert and Kuss — 39th and 40th at 6 minutes back — both race this week at the Volta ao Algarve

A team of researchers from the University of Jaén has identified the first stone mold used for coin production in ancient Hispania
provides new insights into the coin manufacturing processes during the Republican period and the organization of minting workshops
whose location and operation have remained largely unknown until now
From the late 3rd century to the 1st century BCE
a significant number of mints emerged on the Iberian Peninsula
material evidence of production workshops is scarce
often limited to the coins themselves found in scattered archaeological contexts
This situation has raised questions about the physical location of the mints
and the social organization surrounding these artisanal spaces
Iberian coins frequently bore inscribed toponyms
indicating the link between minting and local authorities
but the lack of architectural remains or specific tools has made it difficult to identify the workshops where production took place
the discovery of a stone mold in Obulco represents an exceptional testament to monetary activity in the southern Iberian Peninsula
The discovered object is one of the two valves of a bivalve mold used for producing coin blanks (raw
unminted metal discs used to manufacture coins) through molten metal casting
has a flat surface with circular casting marks and evidence of thermal use
Petrographic analysis has determined that the stone used for its manufacture comes from the geological unit of Porcuna
confirming the local exploitation of resources for industrial tool-making in antiquity
X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (µ-XRF) analysis revealed the presence of a binary copper-lead alloy in the mold’s metallic impressions
consistent with the compositions previously identified in coins from Obulco
Based on the metrics of the circular imprints
researchers have linked this mold to the production of bronze asses dated between 189 and 165 BCE
belonging to one of the first coin series issued by the city
one of the most important cities in the Upper Guadalquivir during the Iberian and Roman periods
played a key role in the economy of Republican Hispania
Its mint was one of the most active in the southern peninsula
issuing coins from the late 3rd century to the 1st century BCE
The iconography of its coins reflects the city’s integration into the Roman economic system
and yokes—symbols of the cereal production that sustained the local economy
The discovery of the mold in a suburban area
raises new questions about the location of the mint within Obulco’s urban layout
another of the few Hispania mints identified archaeologically
the findings of coin blanks in a repurposed section of the city wall suggest that minting workshops could have been located in peripheral areas under the control of local magistrates or military contingents
The study of this mold not only provides information on the technical aspects of coin production but also reflects the socioeconomic changes driven by Roman expansion in Hispania
The coins minted in Obulco during the 2nd century BCE bear the names of local magistrates
inscribed in both Iberian and Latin characters
demonstrating the progressive assimilation of Roman administrative models within indigenous communities
the increasing monetary production in this period coincides with the territorial reorganization and expansion of cereal agriculture in the region
a phenomenon linked to the extractive economic system of the Roman Republic
the Obulco mold is not merely material evidence of an artisanal activity but a tangible indicator of the transformations experienced by Iberian cities as they integrated into the Roman imperial structure
challenges the traditional archaeological invisibility of mints and opens new avenues of research into the location and functioning of these spaces in Republican Hispania
it marks another step in reconstructing the complex economic
and social network that shaped the progressive Romanization of the peninsula and the central role that coinage played in this process

SPAIN: The first test runs have been undertaken for the planned reopening of the 4·7 km tramway in Jaén
which closed in 2011 after just 17 days of operation
Andalucía’s public works department began test running at the end of November to verify that the five Alstom trams had been adequately overhauled after 13 years in storage
and that the infrastructure had been restored to a usable condition
Work to revive the line began in October 2023 following the allocation of EU funding
The Jaén trams have been repainted in the livery used by Andalucía for the urban rail networks in Granada and Cádiz
Tenders have been called for replacement of the medium voltage power supply network
which will require 21 km of underground cabling
The tramway’s control software is also considered obsolete and will need replacement
The line initially opened for trial running on May 3 2011 with passengers being carried free of charge
services were suspended shortly afterwards by court order
after a bus operator complained about unfair competition
serving 10 stops from the city centre to Vaciacostales on the northern outskirts
the trams were overhauled and test running began in November 2024

The Colombian was racing for the first time in his new national champion's jersey at the Clásica Jaén
Egan Bernal fractured his collarbone in a crash at the Clásica Jaén on Monday
bringing to an end his promising early season
Bernal abandoned the race after a crash with 12km to go
when he was part of a 10-rider chase group behind his teammate
It is not known how long he will be out of racing for
but it is a speed bump in what had been an ideal start to 2025
Egan has been diagnosed with a fractured clavicle," Ineos Grenadiers wrote on social media
"He will remain under the expert care of our medical team
Bernal said: "I was really happy to start racing again in Europe
I was feeling really strong and obviously I’m sad to have crashed
The Colombian won both the time trial and the road race at his National Championships earlier this month, hinting at bigger things to come. They were his first victories since he almost died in a crash in early 2022
which left him doubting his future in the sport
although he did show hints of returning to his former self last year
He had also looked in form at Jaén as part of a strong Ineos performance which saw three riders finish in the top 10
chasing moves and blocking the chase of Kwiatkowski's breakaway
The Pole's victory was his team's first victory outside of National Championships since July 2024 on Monday - 226 days ago

Faced with the challenge of acquiring property in big cities
many people are increasingly opting to live in more secluded and smaller municipalities
where the prices of houses and flats are much lower
Andalucía is one of the most affordable options
La Carolina - a town in the province of Jaén - is the cheapest municipality in Andalucía for buying a property
La Carolina ranks lower in terms of average prices
compared to municipalities in other nearby provinces
La Carolina has experienced a boom in property purchases in recent years
attracting both families and investors in search of opportunities
Jaén also has six other municipalities that are among the ten cheapest in the entire region
one can find a four-bedroom flat for as little as 40,000 euros
although it should be noted that some of them require major renovations
with good road connections to the provincial capital and other nearby municipalities
which facilitates mobility for those who need to travel for work purposes
La Carolina benefits from a strong presence of sectors such as the agri-food industry and the motor industry
the proximity to the Despeñaperros natural park has boosted rural tourism
opening new job opportunities in the tourism and services sectors
the Barça futsal team have suffered a serious reverse as they collapsed to a large defeat in Jaén
It was a day when things just didn't go right
while the home side took almost every chance they had
But there will be two chances to make amends
there's a Friday trip to Osasuna to come and also the semifinals of the Copa Catalunya against l'Hospitalet Bellsport before the year is out
Jaen got off to the start they wanted with a penalty from Chino and an own goal from Matheus
meaning they led after the first quarter of an hour
But Antonio narrowed the gap and Pito ended it with goals either side of the break
but immediately from the restart Adolfo levelled things up yet again
a powerful strike from Dani Zurdo and another from Mati Rosa suddenly had the Catalans in an impossible situation
Barça desperately tried to make up for things with a rush goalie
but it just led to another goal for Espindola
Catela and Chino scored a goal for each side
It was the Pole's 32nd professional victory
Ineos Grenadiers won their first race outside of National Championships since July 2024 on Monday - 226 days ago - winning the Clásica Jaén through Michał Kwiatkowski
The Pole attacked with 65km to go of the Spanish one-day race in Andalusia
taking Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates XRG) with him
joining the three remaining members of the day's breakaway out front
The leading trio later became just Kwiatkowski
with Isaac del Toro (UAE Team Emirates XRG) overtaking him to finish second
It was not just an impressive performance from the former world champion
with new signing Axel Laurance and Ben Turner also inside the top 10; Bernal and Ben Swift were ever-present throughout the race as well
It seemed like there were always Ineos riders in the key moves
They are still waiting for their first WorldTour win since the Critérium du Dauphiné last year
Bernal crashed late on and was taken to hospital
"You always have to believe that sort of thing was possible," Kwiatkowski said of his move
"The pace was super hard from the second sector and I didn't expect that that early on
I want to dedicate this victory to my family
but I was missing something to get the victory
my family stayed at home so I know much sacrifice I have done
It means a lot to me that I'm back on the level of winning the races
there were other guys on my team that deserved the victory."
