L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, Catalonia's second most populated city with 282,299 inhabitants, is celebrating its centenary this year after gaining city status in 1925. However, the commemoration has sparked controversy, with many critics labeling it a "fascist centenary."
In 1900, L'Hospitalet had a population of 4,891, which grew to 27,726 by 1925. The District II neighborhood experienced the most significant growth, increasing from 4,000 to 21,000 residents.
This expansion was largely driven by its proximity to Barcelona, as many construction workers involved in building the Barcelona metro—opened in 1924—and the 1929 Universal Exhibition settled in L'Hospitalet.
As a result of this rapid growth, L'Hospitalet was officially granted city status on December 15, 1925, as published in Spain's official gazette. However, this designation was not due to a profound transformation but rather an executive formality.
Despite the milestone, many residents and political groups argue that L'Hospitalet has existed since the 10th century and has a "millenary history, built by everyone," as pro-independence party Esquerra Republicana wrote on their 𝕏 account.
"L'Hospitalet City Council wants to 'celebrate' the centenary of being awarded a fascist title, granted by a dictatorship," the party posted, along with a picture featuring dictator Primo de Rivera and Spanish monarch Alfonso XIII.
Several political groups—including Esquerra Unida i Alternativa, En Comú Podem, CUP, Alternativa d'Esquerres de l'Hospitalet, and Jovent Republicà—have joined the opposition against the centenary celebrations.
In late January, the group issued a manifesto declaring that "there is nothing to celebrate, but much to reflect on and demand."
They argued that the title was granted by a "complicit monarchy to the Primo de Rivera dictatorship" and awarded to Mayor Tomàs Giménez, who had been appointed by the regime.
"If we are a city, it is not thanks to a dictator, but to our residents—workers who were victims of repression and murdered by the same dictatorship that granted this fictitious title," the manifesto reads.
Despite the controversy, L'Hospitalet officially launched its centenary celebrations on Monday evening with an event in Plaça Espanyola, in the Collblanc-La Torrassa neighborhoods, where the city unveiled its anniversary logo.
The logo features the characteristic 'L'H' alongside the number 100, symbolizing the city’s centenary.
As part of the commemorations, the City Council has planned several activities throughout the year, including the Cursa Nocturna race on April 5 and the Festes de Primavera local festival, where 43,000 scarves featuring the centenary logo will be distributed.
Additionally, there will be a large-scale exhibition, an immersive audiovisual experience, and a debate on the anniversary and the city’s evolution.

Two people lost their lives and about thirty others were injured in a bus accident on Sunday afternoon in Portè, France.
The bus with 47 passengers was returning from Andorra and had departed from Hospitalet de Llobregat, outside Barcelona.
According to the Catalan Emergency Medical Service (SEM), 32 people received medical attention: three in serious condition, five with moderate injuries and 24 with minor injuries.
The bus was traveling on the N-320 mountain pass from the Pas de la Casa ski resort in Andorra and was not using the alternative toll road.
Initial reports indicate that the vehicle went off the road and crashed into an embankment.
More than 120 French firefighters were dispatched to the scene, along with Andorran firefighters.
In addition, Catalan emergency services sent seven ground units and a helicopter to assist.
Imma Solé, deputy director of Civil Protection, told RAC1 radio that most of the passengers were Spanish residents of Colombian nationality.
The mayor of Hospitalet de Llobregat, David Quirós, said that Chavi Tours, the company responsible for organizing the trip involved in the accident, has been operating for years without a license to provide bus parking services in the city.
However, despite lacking this license, the company is still permitted to act as a mediator, manage certain activities, and contract other companies with up-to-date permits.
Quirós mentioned that authorities are still working to confirm the origins of the victims. If they are found to be from the city, a support center will be established to assist them and their families.
However, the process of identifying the victims has been complicated by the fact that some have been transferred to hospitals in France. Additionally, the mayor noted that the bus might have made a stop in Barcelona before continuing its journey to Andorra.
The mayor also confirmed that attempts to contact Chavi Tours have been unsuccessful. Several reports also suggest that the company is bankrupt.
Interior minister Núria Parlón explained that the investigation into the accident will be conducted by French authorities, with the assistance of the Catalan police, Mossos d'Esquadra, who will provide information about the organizing company and the bus owner.
Parlón stressed the importance of thoroughly analyzing multiple factors, including the condition of the vehicle, the state of the road, and the weather conditions at the time of the accident.

The driver of the bus that left L'Hospitalet de Llobregat and crashed at the Porté-Puymorens ski resort in France last week, killing two people and injuring 30, has been ordered into provisional detention.
The Marseille prosecutor's office ordered the detention after discovering that the driver tested positive for cocaine.
Investigators also found that the bus's tachograph - a device that records speed and driving time - had been deactivated and that the vehicle had not undergone its mandatory technical inspection.
The 50-year-old Spanish driver now faces charges of involuntary manslaughter and causing injury, aggravated by safety violations, drug use and endangering human life.
The bus was carrying 49 passengers, including several minors. Thirty-two passengers were hospitalized in Catalonia, while nine were taken to hospitals in France, six of whom remain hospitalized. Most of the passengers were of Spanish and Colombian nationality.

Catalan singer Rosalía has established herself as a superstar and is now opening a recording studio right next to Barcelona in Hospitalet de Llobregat, as reported by the Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia and later confirmed by the Catalan News Agency (ACN).
The recording studio will be two streets away from the Fira Gran Via fair venue in Carrer de Can Pi street, where the Catalan singer is renovating an office building.
Besides producing music there, she also plans on making the building the headquarters for her family's company, Motomami SL, which has a subsidiary in real estate development.
"We're very happy and satisfied, it is very important the impact the recording studio will have to boost the city's economy and to promote the cultural district," a city council representative told ACN.
The superstar's studio will be close to the old Godó i Trias factory, which will be transformed into a visual arts center. Together the two projects expand the cultural area in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, which has attracted around 500 artists so far.
At the moment the construction license is being processed to move the singer's plans forward.

A small army of around 100 workers raised the big top on Wednesday in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat where Cirque du Soleil will perform their Mexican-inspired show 'Luzia' from March 17 to April 10
The tent measuring 19 meters high and 51 meters in diameter will take eight days to fully assemble at the site close to Bellvitge Hospital

the city – adjacent to Barcelona – will act as the contemporary circus troupe's southern European headquarters until 2030
There are huge logistical challenges moving a show like 'Luzia' around
It involves traveling with 65 trucks carrying 2,000 tonnes of material and equipment
Restarting again after the pandemic has been a very complicated process, Herrero said. After a six-week run in London, she said they were looking forward to showing off 'Luzia' to the Barcelona audience, somewhere they "have always felt very welcome."
'Luzia' runs in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat until April 10 before moving to Geneva, Alacant (Alicante) and Madrid.

Barcelona
and all the art and culture it has to offer
It’s Catalonia’s second-largest city
stretching south of Barcelona towards the airport
but most visitors will pass through without even registering the name
L’Hospitalet was little more than a village until the 19th century
when waves of industrialisation transformed it
culminating in the post-war boom of the 1960s that saw vast tracts of high-rise housing flung up to accommodate workers from the rest of Spain
City planning lagged behind the population explosion
and residents had to fight for such basic amenities as health centres and schools
large-scale infrastructure projects have turned a suburban hinterland into a city in its own right
with a personality in constant evolution emerging from immigrant communities from all over world
some have called it Barcelona’s Brooklyn – a place with an energy and life many Barcelona residents would envy

Equinix plans to build a second data center in Barcelona
The colo giant this week announced plans for BA2
a new International Business Exchange (IBX) facility located adjacent to the company’s existing BA1 site
local press report the facility will span 2,500 square meters and offer 3.41MW
The company reportedly aims to invest €52 million ($55.6m) in the project
said: “Subsea cables play a vital role in enabling the modern digital world
and we anticipate much progress in the next couple of years following the pandemic-induced backlog
Subsea cables provide the underlying capacity between metros on different continents
making it easily accessible to a wide range of businesses and enabling rapid international expansion without the need for significant CAPEX investment.”
BA2 will reportedly utilize 100 percent renewable energy and be designed with the aim to be Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certified
“Addressing digital demand sustainably is of vital importance
and something we are focused on at Equinix
The timing of this investment couldn’t be better
given the surge in demand we are seeing from companies in Barcelona and across the Mediterranean” added Judith Gardiner
vice president for growth and emerging markets at Equinix
“The potential for Barcelona to become a dense and valuable strategic hub cannot be overstated
and we are delighted to be able to serve this great city by adding it to our strategy to galvanize our position as the connectivity core of the Mediterranean.”
Located at Carrer de l'Acer 30-32 in the L'Hospitalet de Llobregat area of Barcelona
Exquinix’s BA1 offers more than 1,475 square meters (16,000 sq ft) of colocation space
Equinix currently operates two IBX facilities, known as MD1 and MD2, in Madrid, alongside one facility each in Barcelona and Seville. Last year the company announced plans for a new IBX facility in Madrid known as MD6 as well as an xScale facility known as MD3x
Aside from MD6 and MD3x in Madrid, Equinix acquired all of its Spanish facilities in 2017 when it bought local operator Itconic from the Carlyle Group for €215 million (then $259m)

The German athlete broke his own world record* in the men's long jump T64 setting a mark of 8.64m in his sixth and last attempt during the International Para Athletics Meeting of L'Hospitalet in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat
The jump was 2 centimetres longer than Rehm's previous record set at the 2021 European Para Athletics Championships in Bydgoszcz
an exciting day and a really great competition in good conditions
one even to 8.72 metres – unfortunately with too much tailwind
get this thing now and make it official'," Rehm said
The 34-year-old jumped 8.72m in his fourth attempt but the mark could not be made official because of the +4 m/s wind (long jumps made with wind assistance over 2 m/s are not counted as official records)
Rehm now will be looking at improving his record at the Para Athletics World Championships in Paris
"There's definitely a lot of potential and it's really fun
I hope that it will continue like this in the season and that I can maybe add a few more centimetres on top," added the four-time Paralympic champion
Rehm was the main star of the 18th edition of the traditional Para athletics meet near Barcelona but there were more outstanding performances on Saturday
Stylianos Malakopoulos from Greece was close to breaking his own record in the men's long jump T62 landing 5 centimetres short of the world mark with 7.18m
Spain's Paralympic champion Adiatarou Iglesias (T13) delighted the home crowd winning the 100m ahead of Dutch start Fleur Jong (T62) in a multiclass race
Iglesias also picked a gold medal in the 200m with France's Angelina Lanza (T64) in second
Lanza also left Catalunya with a gold medal in the women's long jump
Another Tokyo 2020 Paralympic winner to triumph in L'Hospitalet was Morocco's Ayoub Sadni (T47) in the men's 400m

FC Barcelona player, Jordi Alba; president of FC Barcelona and the Barça Foundation, Joan Laporta; director of the Cruyff Foundation, Pati Roura; corporate director of Education and Marketing of the ”la Caixa” Foundation, Xavier Bertolín; and mayoress of Hospitalet de Llobregat, Núria Marín, inaugurated the Cruyff Court Jordi Alba on Friday, with the intention of promoting sport among children and young people in the city.
This initiative from the Cruyff Foundation is the result of an alliance with the Barça Foundation and the ”la Caixa” Banking Foundation for the construction, maintenance and revitalisation of a total of 15 ‘Cruyff Courts’ throughout Catalonia, a project in which priority is given to disadvantaged areas to promote social inclusion of especially vulnerable children and young people through sport. L’Hospitalet de Llobregat city council are also collaborating for the Cruyff Court Jordi Alba.
Cruyff Courts are small, open-air football fields that aim to promote sport and instill values such as responsibility, integration, teamwork and self-improvement, as well as prevent sedentary lifestyles and childhood obesity.
This Cruyff Court is part of the actions carried out by the L’Hospitalet City Council through their Comprehensive Urban Regeneration Plan of the Planes-Blocs Florida area, which aims to ensure the improvement of the quality of life and coexistence of the neighborhood through the promotion of integration, equity and social cohesion.
During school hours, the Cruyff Court Jordi Alba will host the daily sporting activity of the Balaguer and Pau Casals schools, which do not have adequate space for practicing sport. The rest of the time it will function as an open playground, and will be used by Esplai La Florida and Espai Jove Sidecar, among others.
This initiative also promotes two specific projects: The Cruyff Courts 6vs6, a tournament for boys and girls aged 10 to 12 in which all Cruyff Courts participate, and the Community Programme, which aims to allow young people from different neighborhoods to learn to organise their own tournament.
"I'm very proud to be here today. I went to school here and unfortunately we didn't have a pitch like this, so we played on the street and used stones for goalposts. I hope that the boys and girls in my neighborhood enjoy it and that they respect and care for it."
"I hope that now a new stage in the history of Barça has begun. If it turns out to be glorious, then it will be thanks to Johann, because we always take him into account when making decisions, in any field."
"I'm very happy that this new facility, which will be part of the Florida district's comprehensive plan, has been completed in a very short time. For me, it’s very exciting to see Jordi Alba, who was a boy who went to Balaguer school when they didn't have a playground, here to open what from today will be a place for children to enjoy."
“I want to thank Hospitalet city council and our partners La Caixa Foundation and Barça Foundation, and especially Joan Laporta -who is with us today- and Jordi Alba and his father for believing in the project and helping us a lot. I would like for us to remember Johann as well, because as he would say, we can't do this alone -we have to do it together."
“It is a source of pride for us to inaugurate this new facility and continue collaborating with the Cruyff Foundation and the Barça Foundation, with whom we have been working for almost 25 years. We are proud to continue opening spaces to promote access to sport for children and young people."
The SAGA gaming fair returns for its second edition this weekend
eSports and a LAN party from Friday to Sunday at La Farga in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat
The fair aims to "normalize the use of Catalan within the video game industry," one of the organizers
Organized by the Catalan-language NGO Plataforma per la Llengua, the 2023 fair builds on the first edition last year – it's three days rather than two, with 75 exhibitors, up from 50, and covers 7,000 square meters, practically double last year's space.
Fifty new points have been set up to play current and retro video games and the LAN Party has its own stage and will last 56 hours, open to anyone who wants to set up their computer or console and play.
As well as promoting Catalan in gaming, organizers also want to be a focal point for eSports and help break down barriers in the industry in terms of inclusion, gender and accessibility.
"It is a very masculinized industry," Pérez says, "but now we are fighting that with various actions," including female mentors for women who want to work as professionals in the industry.
On a 14-meter stage with a giant screen, SAGA will have various competitions organized and broadcast in Catalan by Gamesports Eléctrònics.
In addition, the LAN Party will have 200 seats with about twenty games available, including FIFA, Hearthstone, Legends of Runaterra, Rocket League, Age of Empires II, Fortnite, Call of Duty: Warzone, Apex Legends, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and League of Legends.

Despite the big wooden casks on the wall and the creaky shelves crowded with bottles behind the bar
an old bodega (wine store and tavern) in Hospitalet de Llobregat
a city located on the periphery of the Barcelona metropolitan area
who has deigned to keep these old relics from an earlier era
is seafood – every day the bar’s counter is covered with trays of majestic treasures from the Mediterranean and the Atlantic like prawns
Founded by Francisco “Siscu” Rosés in 1933
Cal Siscu originally sold bulk wine and liquors
which also doubled as a home (Siscu and his family used to live upstairs)
to fill up their wine jugs and sip on a vermut with some olives and conservas like tuna or sardines
When Siscu’s son Antonio “Toni” Rosés (who was born in the bodega) and his wife
they knew that some changes needed to be made if they wanted to survive
So Dolors began to cook fresh seafood in the family’s kitchen
the wine tavern morphed into a marisquería
offering fresh oysters and their iconic dish
lobster in an aromatic tomato sauce thickened with almonds and hazelnuts
the owners had reached retirement age and were looking to sell
decided to take over the bodega-marisquería with his friend and head chef Jaume Carbonell
They improved and extended the menu from 14 to around 25 dishes
Galician clams (cooked with a bit of olive oil
Cal Siscu’s customers are a mix of Barcelonans who work at the offices and hospitals in the area and stop by for lunch during the workweek
many of whom come with families and friends on the weekends
but after a lot of work and increasing the food quality
the restaurant finally took off,” says Tino
The throngs at lunch and dinner attest to that
Every day the bar’s counter is covered with trays of majestic treasures from the Mediterranean and the Atlantic
juicy and tasty and with just the right salt point
pair perfectly with the aromatic house vermut – as an aperitif
this combination opens the senses to what comes next
that was espardeñas with chickpeas and a creamy fried egg on top that pulls everything together
These sea cucumbers from the Mediterranean are a delicacy and not so easy to find nowadays
Valencia and the Balearic Islands have traditionally caught them – it’s a classic dish with deep roots in the Catalan culinary tradition
The version served at Cal Siscu was immensely satisfying and managed to be both rich and humble
But the true star here is still the lobster with sauce
Tino came to our table with a couple of live lobsters to let us make our pick
which Jaume then cooked in a casserole with a tomato and nut sauce
This dish is very similar to the lobster in “American sauce,” a recipe created by the French chef Pierre Fraise
they alter the sauce a bit by adding a traditional Catalan picada of finely chopped almonds and hazelnuts plus a couple of aromatic liqueurs (which ones
they added two eggs to the remaining sauce – this simple act encouraged us to devour what was left
and as we dipped our bread in the luxurious red sauce
we found ourselves immensely grateful that the pleasure of eating this dish had been stretched out
the current wine selection is restricted to a few options from Torelló
a winery based in Catalonia’s Penedès region
plus a few other bottles with different origins and grapes: for whites
one Godello and one Albariño (both Galician)
one Rioja (Rioja) and one Ribera del Duero (Castilla Leon)
The selection is small but the quality is good
and the wines we tried accentuated the flavors of the seafood without overpowering them
the soul of this bodega-marisquería long ago left the vineyard behind

A quick look at the map of the winners of the last local elections tells some interesting stories
Looking toward the Barcelona metropolitan area
one can see a concentration of towns in red where the Socialist Party came out on top
more than any other part of the territory.
The red belt encircling Barcelona is a stronghold for the Socialists and has been for decades
the left-leaning party has governed consistently ever since the return to democracy in 1979
as is the case in Sant Boi de Llobregat and in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat
the second-most populous city in Catalonia
immediately south of Barcelona.
the biggest question this election will be whether the Socialists can win another absolute majority
The task for the challengers is to grow enough just to have some say in the council for the next four years.
says she feels "stronger than ever" ahead of the 2023 elections after her last mandate was marked by a corruption investigation she was later cleared of
although two of her former councilors are still facing trial.
Jaume Graells of pro-independence Esquerra Republicana (ERC) will be her biggest challenger after he left the Socialists during the last term, and it is he who filed the initial complaint that led to the investigation.
Then there are towns where the Socialists govern with minority governments, as is the case in Sant Adrià de Besós and Cerdanyola del Vallès. In these places, the PSC will target growth, repeating absolute majorities as they have done in many other municipalities, whereas challengers will look to wrestle back some more control.
But why is it that the Socialist Party is so strong in the areas surrounding Barcelona? History, demographics, and industry can go a long way to explaining this.
During the 1950s and 60s, many people moved northwards from other parts of Spain in search of jobs in industrialized areas on the outskirts of large cities, including Barcelona.
In Catalonia, many people moved from the southern region of Andalucía, also traditionally a working-class Socialist stronghold, and passed their voting patterns down the generations.
The Barcelona metropolitan area's red belt also has some purple patches across it too. The political space led by Ada Colau's En Comú movement, left of the Socialists, encapsulates the former Communist party, which was very strong in municipal elections in Catalonia particularly shortly after the return to democracy, before later evolving into the Green party.
In more recent years, this political space has developed into the anti-austerity En Comú movement in Catalonia, and Podemos movement across Spain, born out of the difficult post-2008 crisis years.
This part of the left-wing space in Catalonia saw a huge surge in the 2015 elections, including Ada Colau becoming the mayor of Barcelona, but 2019 saw a drop-off in support. Yet, for the past four years they have still controlled the councils of Montcada i Reixac, Ripollet, El Prat, and of course Barcelona itself after reaching a deal with other parties as Colau finished just behind ERC's Ernest Maragall in the voting.
In many Socialist-governed towns, Esquerra Republicana are the second-strongest party, as is the case in towns such as L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, Sabadell, Sant Adrià de Besós, Esplugues de Llobregat, Granollers, and more.
Santa Coloma de Gramenet will be an interesting battlefield this year, as Esquerra have put Gabriel Rufián up as their candidate for mayor. Having spent years confronting the Spanish government as an MP in the Congress in Madrid, Rufián has become a very well-known figure in his hometown.
Liberals Ciudadanos were another strong force in a lot of metropolitan municipalities in the last election, but polls predict that their biggest goal will be just to survive.
It's expected that they will lose voters, with the conservative People's Party, far-right Vox, or even the Socialists likely to benefit from their fall.
Luzia, a journey through an imaginary Mexico, runs from March 17 to April 10 with tickets on general release from November 2
First published: October 26, 2021 01:19 PM
Cirque du Soleil has chosen Catalonia to kick off its first post-pandemic European tour.
The company is bringing Luzia, a "waking dream" inspired by "the people, places, and stories that define Mexico," to the Barcelona area from March 17 to April 10, 2022.
The contemporary circus troupe will be raising their big top in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat's cultural district, the second Cirque du Soleil show the city will host, after Totem in 2018.
"This is the moment we have all been waiting for. We are returning to a city where we have always felt at home. It is an especially emotional time as we wait excitedly to return to the stage," Cirque du Soleil president and director Daniel Lamarre says.
The return of Cirque du Soleil will come two years after their last performance in Spain before the outbreak of the Covid-19, which took place in Seville on March 8, 2020. "The intermission is over!" Lamarre exclaims.
With Luzia, Cirque du Soleil will celebrate 24 years of tours to Catalonia, with a dozen different shows. The upcoming spectacle features almost 50 performers and is described by the company as "a surrealistic series of grand visual surprises and breathtaking acrobatic performances."
The mayor of L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, Núria Marín, has welcomed their return: "After these difficult last eighteen months because of the pandemic, it is extraordinary news."
Tickets for Luzia are already on sale for Cirque Club members and go on general release on November 2.
The company "exceeds expectations" and recovers pre-pandemic attendance figures
Cirque du Soleil's latest show, 'Luzia', said goodbye to the Catalan public this Sunday "exceeding [audience] expectations”, as its attendance figures were similar to those from before the pandemic.
According to Charlie Wagner, the production’s publicist, more than 150,000 spectators came to see the 70 performances that the Canadian company showcased in their marquee in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, just outside Barcelona.
The show was "well-received" by the public and marked the return of Cirque du Soleil to Europe after the two-year hiatus caused by Covid.
Wagner emphasized that the Catalan audience was "wonderful and welcoming" and said that they hoped to see them again in the shows they plan to do in the coming months across Spain, as well as at the show 'Corteo' which the company plans to do in Mallorca this August.
'Luzia', takes viewers on a trip through a dream of Mexico. The name, coming from a fusion of the Spanish words 'luz' and 'lluvia', meaning 'light' and 'rain' respectively, highlights its focus on these elements.
This manifested itself in a blanket of artificial rain, which the company has admitted was a "big technical challenge".
A suspension bridge over 14 meters long, a swimming pool under the stage, a rigorous disinfection process and a special system to keep live electric cables separate were key for the display to work.
In the show, a parachutist lands, thirsty, in a land of memories, where he finds a great magic key that allows him to enter a magical world, halfway between fantasy and reality. Thus begins the journey of 'Luzia', where viewers are transported through the essence of Mexican culture through multiple shows of acrobats, tightrope walkers, jugglers, clowns and contortionists.
All this aims to highlight the richness of Mexican landscapes, the speed of the Tarahumares tribe and diverse animal life.
After Barcelona, 'Luzia' will continue its tour of the continent, stopping in Alicante on July 14 and Madrid on November 5.
Police officers from the Provincial Investigation Brigade of Barcelona
supported by the General Commissariat for Information
have arrested an individual of Pakistani nationality
resident in the town of L'Hospitalet de Llobregat (Barcelona)
for his alleged direct participation in activities involving the editing and spread of propaganda of a Jihadi nature
through the use of multiple accounts on all types of social networks
The detainee undertook intense and ongoing activities to spread and glorify the doctrinal message and operational strategy of different terrorist groups of the Sunni branch of Islam through the social networks
His modus operandi mainly consisted of the publication of photos
through which he systematically sought to provoke in his Internet followers sentiments of hatred towards Westernised Muslim women or those who sought to claim their rights
towards Shiites and the Western world in general
whilst promoting the "merits" of terrorist groups that fight to establish an Islamic Caliphate under Sharia law
With the aim of ensuring greater impact among people he sought to entice to the cause
the detainee included extraordinarily crude images among his publications
These included a host of photos in which people appeared who had been mutilated or wounded with firearms (in some cases the victims were young children)
These publications tended to be accompanied by comments in which he said that those people who appeared in the images were Sunni Muslims who had been murdered by Westerners
he was particularly skilled in manipulating his followers on the social networks
where his goal was to influence them to realise that the only way to be a good Sunni Muslim was to take up the armed and violent struggle
The police operation took place under the instruction and supervision of the Judge of Central Investigation Court number five and was coordinated by the Public Prosecution Service of the National High Court
This police operation was carried out within the framework of the ongoing fight being undertaken by the National Police Force against radical Jihadi individuals located in our country
This also comes within the framework of the National Strategic Security Plan in which the General Commissariat for Information has made a full commitment to its application
establishing certain protective measures and others to persecute terrorists
of both an investigative and an operational nature to thus impede any form of radicalisation that precedes and leads to any plans to carry out terrorist acts

The two municipalities have designed a project without equivalent in Spain and probably in Europe
It is a cluster of the biomedical sector that will seek excellence in the field of health and scientific innovation
The initiative is of such magnitude that it was catalogued as a “strategic project of the country”
The biocluster will be financed through the Next Generation EU funds

It also has a European subsidy in the amount of six million euros
This alliance boosts a healthcare ecosystem that already has an annual turnover of 2.275 billion euros
The project will favor the arrival of medical technology and pharmaceutical companies that will join the 54 existing ones
The “dormitory city” label that stigmatized emerging cities in Barcelona’s metropolitan area (such as L’Hospitalet or Esplugues de Llobregat) has become a thing of the past with this new biomedical initiative
The biomedical cluster project was created by the City Councils of L’Hospitalet and Esplugues together with the participation of powerful public and private institutions in the field of health
These include the Bellvitge University Hospital (HUB)
the Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL)
Also the Hospital de Sant Joan de Déu (SJD) and the Ministries of Health
The initiative has two equally important branches
One revolves around the Biopol-Granvia project in L’Hospitalet and the other is centered at the SJD hospital in Esplugues
The goal is to “favor a new economy based on innovation and knowledge and to become a point of attraction for laboratories and new biomedical companies,” added the same sources
The biomedical cluster will integrate healthcare
research and innovation as part of the public health system strategy
The biocluster aims to improve the health and quality of life of citizens and
the efficiency and sustainability of the healthcare system
The goal is for the system to become “a true digital health model based on the use of data,” the Govern added
The biocluster will create approximately 50,000 jobs and is expected to have an annual turnover of around 7 billion euros

The largest of David Chipperfield Architects’ projects currently under construction, the new law courts complex of Barcelona breaks down the 330,000 m2 programme into eight freestanding buildings, linked by a continuous atrium space. The project includes the design of all public areas, courtrooms, and offices.
The site for the new judicial complex is at the border of the cities of Barcelona and L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, at the intersection of two main roads, a strategic position that facilitates access from the urban center.
The program is distributed in eight volumes: four prismatic blocks housing the courtrooms and laid out around an atrium, two buildings containing the judicial premises and two commercial volumes.
The large terraced atrium, aside from bringing unity to the whole complex, acts as a circulation space to orientate the different users – judges, lawyers, civil servants, visitors – through the levels of the law courts.

Innovative US car company opens first dealership in Spain near to Barcelona with another planned soon for the Catalan capital
ACN | L'Hospitalet de Llobregat
the innovative American car company headed by entrepreneur Elon Musk
opened its first showroom in Catalonia on Tuesday
The car dealership is located in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat
The car dealership will include a service center for car owners
a workshop and will also have some of the firm’s vehicles on show
Two models will be available: the S and the X
The Tesla model 3 will become available in the stores next year
It is the company’s most affordable vehicle and can already be pre-ordered on the Internet
Previously, the various legal departments of the governments of Barcelona and l’Hospitalet were scattered in 17 buildings across the two cities
with functional frustrations for both users and employees
A new conjoined City of Justice will improve efficiency and allow working spaces to adapt and absorb the constant transformation of the judicial body as well as provide reserve space for future growth
The site is at the border of the two cities of Barcelona and l’Hospitalet on a site which was previously a military barracks. It is located adjacent to both Gran Via, a major access route into the centre of Barcelona from the south, and Carrilet, an artery leading to l’Hospitalet. The position provides optimum accessibility to the city and major metropolitan routes, on both public and private transport.
© Christian RichtersThe principle proposition of the project breaks down the massive programme requirements (330,000 sqm) into a series of separate but interrelated blocks on a public plaza, giving a spatial composition that attempts to break the rigid and monolithic image of justice. The proposal also attempts to provide equilibrium to the relationships between the different working areas, public areas and landscape.
© Joan ArgelésA group of four large judicial buildings are situated around the perimeter of a linking concourse building. They generally contain courtrooms at ground floor and a further three floors. All of these floors are accessed directly from the concourse building which acts as a filter. The concourse building also gathers people at the start and completion of their judicial visit within a central public room, which overlooks the exterior plaza.
© Joan ArgelésFour other independent buildings comprise a judicial services building for l’Hospitalet, a forensic sciences building and two commercial buildings with retail facilities at ground floor. A further building is planned to contain both residential and commercial retail activities.
© Joan ArgelésAll eight buildings are conceived as formally restrained blocks with load bearing coloured concrete ‘cage’ facades
Each building has a different and contrasting
The concourse building has a more free form plan with deep exposed concrete slabs and woven mesh screens in front of frameless glazing

the renowned outlet store of tableware by weight
has recently opened its second store in Catalonia
consolidating its position as a leader in the supply of Portuguese ceramic tableware at highly competitive prices
With a great reception in its first store in Polinyà (Vallès Occidental) last year
the brand has decided to expand its presence and has opened its doors at 92 Miguel Hernández street in L’Hospitalet del Llobregat
A Mercadoria has launched a special promotion
giving customers the opportunity to take home a quality souvenir
This initiative reflects the brand’s philosophy of offering high-value products at affordable prices
The store will be open during business hours from Monday to Saturday
from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm and from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm
The concept of A Mercadoria is simple but revolutionary: customers can fill a cart or basket with the ceramic tableware of their choice
and the price is determined by the total weight in the box
The store offers a varied selection including plates
cutlery and exclusive collections of the brand
These items have established prices that are extremely affordable
with many of them starting as low as €1.50 per unit
The main attraction lies in the peso-based pricing system
Mercadoria has become the main supplier of tableware for the hospitality sector in the cities where it operates
Its affordable prices and high quality products have facilitated the complete renovation of tableware for bars and restaurants without compromising budgets
A Mercadoria has introduced a corner specialized in basketry
rugs and a selection of esparto grass and wood items
all in line with the ‘slowdeco’ style
A Mercadoria is scheduled to receive new merchandise every 15 to 20 days and they inform about the arrival of new products through their social networks @amercadoria_outlet
where they also share ideas for decorating the table
the brand now has two locations in the province of Barcelona and a total of 16 points of sale throughout the peninsula
consolidating its position as the leading retail outlet in Spain
What is remarkable about this new store is its location accessible by public transportation
The nearest metro stops are Bellvitge (L1) and Europa/Fira (L9S)

Barcelona residents and visitors alike will already be familiar with the red bikes that make up the city's Bicing bicycle sharing scheme. From 2023, the wider metropolitan area will have its own equivalent in red and blue livery: AMBici.
AMBici will be launched progressively next year with 2,600 latest-generation electric bikes and 236 parking stations.
Sant Feliu de Llobregat, Sant Joan Despí and Cornellà de Llobregat will be the first municipalities to welcome the new scheme at the beginning of 2023, with the rollout reaching twelve other municipalities over the following three months.
The annual cost of the service in 2023 will be €25. This allows users to use bikes for 30 minutes free of charge. After the first half hour the cost will be 50 cents per 30 minutes.
From 2024, the subscription will rise to €40 a year and cost 15 cents for the first half hour and 50 cents per half hour thereafter.
It has not proved possible to fully integrate the new AMBici scheme with Barcelona's existing bikeshare system, Bicing.
However, to facilitate shared use, seven transfer stations will be installed, two in Sant Adrià de Besòs, three in L'Hospitalet, and one each in Santa Coloma de Gramenet and Esplugues de Llobregat, where users of the two systems can swap their AMBici bike for a Bicing one or vice versa.
An integrated metropolitan subscription will be created for the two services, costing between €53 and €65 annually.
AMBici will be managed by TMB (Barcelona Metropolitan Transport) and is co-financed with €7m from EU Next Generation funds. It represents a new impetus to enhance and facilitate sustainable mobility options in the metropolis of Barcelona, Antoni Poveda, vice-president of Mobility, Transport and Sustainability at the AMB, explained at Tuesday's presentation.

This is one of the sentences used by Richie Culver
to welcome us to his first individual exhibition at L21 Gallery’s Barcelona venue
Culver has developed his practice through painting
His work is threaded around his own biographical experiences
and more recently taking it to the extreme simplification of pure writing on canvas
like a furtive graffiti on a city wall that screams the truth in our face with its elusive and imperfect line
contradictions and complexities of our present time
And that throws its dark darts at us without any type of painkiller
Culver decided that maybe he had been trying too hard to become an artist
He says he decided from then on to follow his path in a willfully effortless way
he left the (figurative) representation aside to become more strictly conceptual and work only with texts on his canvases
an extreme simplification that has given his paintings a unique and original character
The text had been a fundamental part of his earlier projects
making it distinctly more unique and recognizable
while radicalizing his art form and his position as an artist
Culver’s work appears to us as a possibility to evade the differentiation between representation and world
perhaps influenced by another enfant terrible like Debord
is made to annoy the society of the spectacle
Commercial artist drives past conceptual artist in a Bentley
In his previous exhibition “I am the best”
The tone already hinted at an anxious energy
we found some textual works in tune with the new paintings presented at L21 Barcelona
In them we could read sentences like “I was not born to work hard” or that well-known piece of advice “Find a job you love and you will never have to work another day in your life”
An advice that for any member of the working class could seem almost humorous since the autonomy or economic success it refers to is very far from their reach
In 2022 he presented another painting with a leitmotif that could be intended for himself as well as for any of us: “I wanna do as little as possible but still get that mad money”
there is on top of that an artist observing the art world and its dynamics
and above all the elitism and snobbery that surrounds everything
making it all a matter of appearance and class
Culver explains in several interviews how in his teens he dropped out of school to go to work in a caravan factory
His works have been filled with biographical references and thoughts that suggest a dark vision of society and look ironically at the artistic context in which they are produced
Not in vain one of the themes that frequently arises in his practice has been the criticism of the class system
His is a vision of society typical of a generation that
has realized that it is impossible to escape the wildest capitalism
and that any attempt to get out of the system is an unrealizable utopia
A generation that leaves postmodernism behind and enters a new era: that of capitalist realism

The police operation represents the final phase of an investigation conducted by Central Court 6 of the Spanish National High Court. During the operation, specialized squads of the Mossos d’Esquadra carried out 12 raids and arrested 9 individuals. Three of the arrested individuals are suspected to have connections with the authors of the terrorist attacks at Brussels’ metro and airport.
The Catalan Minister of Home Affairs, Jordi Jané, confirmed the confiscation of a large amount of money, drugs, and firearms as well as digital information, which still has to be analyzed. According to Jané there is no evidence so far that the arrested individuals were planning an attack in Catalonia but he added that it cannot be ruled out. The minister highlighted the successful collaboration between the Catalan police force (Mossos d’Esquadra), the Belgian police, and the Spanish police.
Of the arrested individuals 8 are from Morocco and one from Spain. Even though not all of them are charged with the same crimes, they are all charged with a at least five: ties with or belonging to terrorist groups, ties with or belonging to organized crime groups related to illegal drug trade, illegal possession of firearms, money laundering, and misappropriation. Most of the 9 arrested suspects have been residents in Catalonia for more than 20 years.
Tuesday’s anti-jihadist operation was coordinated with the Belgian police within the EU program Eurojust, according to the Catalan police forces who informed the Audiencia Nacional, which is the leading investigator. A joint investigation team of Belgian and Catalan police forces was created immediately. Over the last few months they had been exchanging information and finally determined the direct connection of the arrested individuals with jihadist terrorism.
On the other hand the scope of the investigation also required the collaboration between the Mossos d’Esquadra and the CNI, the Spanish National Intelligence Center, in order to inform the latter about the development of the investigations, exchange information, and coordinate with Spanish police forces. This Tuesday morning Spanish and Belgian Federal Police agents also participated in the operation. There were also raids in Morocco.

After the demolition of the Porcelanosa store next to the fairgrounds
work will begin at the end of March 2023 on the expansion and construction of a new pavilion at Fira de Barcelona
This work will strengthen Fira de Barcelona’s worldwide leadership in Gran Vía as a center par excellence for events
conventions and important international congresses and trade fairs
Thanks to the demolition of the Porcelanosa store
construction will soon begin on the new pavilion in the L’Hospitalet area
This new space will allow it to add 60,000 square meters of gross floor space to the trade fair complex
bringing the total to 300,000 square meters
This will make it more feasible to hold important congresses in the city
since there was no exhibition space available
The necessary demolition and adaptation works will be completed in March to immediately start the foundations of the future building
What will be Fira’s ninth pavilion will be known as pavilion “zero”
the project’s investment is estimated at 201 million euros and the work is expected to be completely finished by 2026
The project and its financing are being financed by Fira 2000 (the Generalitat
the city councils of Barcelona and L’Hospitalet de Llobregat)
the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce and the Barcelona Metropolitan Area
Another piece of news is that the Japanese architect Toyo Ito
who was in charge of the design of the Gran Vía venue
will also be in charge of the construction of the new pavilion in collaboration with the Barcelona office b720 Fermín Vázquez
They also teamed up on the construction of the two skyscrapers in front of the site
which are occupied by the Porta Fira hotel and the Realia building for offices
For 2021 Fira 2000 commissioned architect Ito to design the preliminary project for the transformation
with the aim of achieving an image similar to that of the rest of the site
The new Gran Vía pavilion will be connected to the current venue via a walkway
which will allow the facilities to be crossed from one end to the other
The lower part of the pavilion will contain meeting and protocol rooms
It will have a panoramic elevator that will go up to the roof
It will also have a green space that will serve as a public square
The exhibition space will consist of two floors
each with 17,135 square meters of usable floor space
typical of the Japanese architect’s constructions
will be present in the new construction of the “zero” pavilion
Group also changes party rules to avoid suspending or expelling those members found guilty of corruption in "lawfare" trials
The pro-independence and junior member of the Catalan coalition government
Junts per Catalunya (JxCat) party agreed to "mainly" form executives with other political forces in favor of self-determination and against repression
The party also proposed to eliminate inheritance and wealth taxes
while reducing personal income (IRPF) contributions from 50% to 45%
This was decided on Saturday during the second national congress held in Hospitalet de Llobregat
"we will prioritize agreements with parties that share our model and are in favor of Catalonia’s independence
we will also respect local autonomy," Jordi Fàbrega
the pro-independence party will still be open to agree with other political forces whether or not they are in favor of Catalonia’s self-determination.
In fact, one of the deals reached between Junts and a unionist party is in Barcelona’s regional council. In 2021, JxCat agreed with the Socialist party (PSC) prompting clashes with current senior coalition government member
Junts also decided to change its party rules when they consider people have been indicted for corruption in "lawfare" cases
those accused will not be suspended from the political force nor expelled.
The proposal was voted in favor by 90.9% of the party members.
"A judicial sentence related to corruption
or other crimes that are against the party’s founding rules
will not be comprehended in "lawfare" cases
it will be an internal committee who will decide future steps," Catalan social rights minister Violant Cervera and member of Junts said on Saturday night.
as stated by Catalan political parties' general rules
establish that members will "automatically" be suspended from the force "when indicted in regards to corruption cases."
"Those condemned for one of those cases will be expelled ultimately," the law adds.
The decision arrives a few days after the prosecutors’ office asked forsix years in prison for Laura Borràs
for her to be barred from office for 21 years
in relation to her allegedly awarding irregular contracts during her time at the head of the Institute of Catalan Letters
Catalonia's High Court (TSJC) indicted Borràs on June 29 for supposedly favoring a friend
in what should have been put to a public tender
for which she is accused of an administrative breach of official duty
did not accuse Borràs of misuse of public funds
as there are no documents certifying that the now Parliament speaker paid extra for the requested works
was officially founded as a political party in July 2020
but the name was also used for the umbrella group led by Puigdemont that won 34 seats in the 2017 Catalan elections
That Junts per Catalunya grouping was the largest pro-independence force in the last parliament. They formed a coalition government with Esquerra (ERC) and held the presidency until Quim Torra's disqualification from office
The group was led by former president Carles Puigdemont, until June, when current Parliament speaker Laura Borràs, took over.

The transition from Bicing to metropolitan bikes in the Catalan capital is expected by 2023
This new service will be called “Ambici” and will be extended to 15 nearby towns with interchange stops within the city limits
passengers can switch from one type of bicycle to another
Ambici is different from Barcelona’s Bicing and will not be used to travel around the Catalan capital
Bicycles in the city may also not be taken to ride outside the city limits
will build seven stations where it will be possible to exchange the two-wheeled bikes of one system and the other in towns near the city
It will be something like someone who gets off the bus and takes the subway or the railroad
The aim is to integrate the two bike-sharing models
The future merger will take several years to consolidate
while the contracts are coming to an end: the Ambici contract for six more years and the Bicing contract
The connection stops will be located at three strategic points:
a metropolitan pass will be marketed with which cyclists will be able to use both services
The price of the integrated subscription will be between 53 and 65 euros
Bicing users who buy the integrated pass will save 20%
as the flat rate will go from 50 to 40 euros and the usage rate from 35 to 28 euros
Ambici’s new service will be launched in early 2023 with 2,600 bicycles
this service currently has more than 7,000 with 2,000 electric prototypes and around 135,000 subscribers
Ambici is estimated to cost the AMB about $40.5 million
7.2 million came from the European Next Generation anti-crisis funds
which were earmarked for the purchase of bicycles and stops
The first will be located in Sant Feliu de Llobregat
which will take place during the first quarter of 2023
the stops will be extended to 12 more locations: L’Hospitalet de Llobregat
