RECENTLY a loggerhead turtle laid 101 eggs on El Pedruchillo beach in La Manga del Mar Menor
marking the first complete nesting of the season in the Murcia region
This is also the sixth nest recorded nationwide this year
The nesting was reported by an off-duty environmental agent
who alerted the Forest Coordination Centre
officials quickly moved the nest to a secure location at kilometre 15 on the beach
while 10 of the eggs were sent to the El Valle Wildlife Recovery Centre for controlled incubation
The eggs are expected to hatch in about 60 to 62 days
This find highlights La Manga as a key nesting site for loggerhead turtles in Murcia
with many equipped with GPS trackers to study their migration patterns

CLIMATE change is putting Murcia’s coastline at serious risk
with rising sea levels and saltwater affecting key areas like the Mar Menor
A recent Greenpeace report warns that higher tides could flood coastal towns
could see parts of its city centre underwater
faces faster deterioration due to extreme weather and warming waters
Saltwater intrusion into freshwater supplies could devastate crops
Billions invested in protecting beaches may soon be swept away if sea levels continue to rise
Experts recommend solutions like restoring wetlands and building sustainable flood barriers to reduce damage
real progress depends on larger national and international efforts to fight climate change and protect vulnerable regions
much of Murcia’s beautiful coast could be lost
THE regional government has started a project to restore the El Cabezo de El Palomar forest area in the El Valle y Carrascoy Regional Park
The restoration plan includes removing burned plants to stop soil erosion
with 60 per cent funded by the EU’s FEDER program
The work includes using the burned vegetation to create barriers that will prevent soil loss
especially in areas that often get heavy rainfall
The project will also make it easier to access the area for future management and restoration
THE 2025 Lotería del Niño (Children’s Lottery)
the Christmas Lottery held on the day of the Three Kings
brought some good news to the Region of Murcia
was sold entirely in El Corte Inglés in León
the region did receive part of the second and third prizes
The second prize (06766) was sold in Mazarrón at Loterías El Dólar and in Murcia city at L’Agustinica on Paseo de Florencia
though the owner in Murcia wasn’t sure if any had to be refunded
The third prize (66777) was spread across several places in the region
Bazar Tokio and Lotería Doña Maruja sold part of the winning tickets
when the town received over 11 million euros
this year’s prizes still brought a bit of luck to the area
THE regional government of Murcia is extending its action plan to combat noise pollution to thirteen new road segments
This plan aims to reduce the negative effects of traffic noise on nearby residents
particularly in areas with high vehicle traffic
the Ministry of Development and Infrastructure plans to invest €1.25 million to improve conditions
The intervention follows a noise impact assessment and will include measures such as installing acoustic barriers
such as the RM-F36 between Cartagena and Torre Pacheco
will see traffic speed reductions and enhanced signage
like the RM-A4 in Murcia and RM-F40 in La Unión
will benefit from noise barriers and speed controls to protect residential areas
These measures are part of a broader €30 million investment in improving the regional road network
which also includes funding for infrastructure upgrades in several municipalities
The project highlights the commitment to reducing noise pollution and improving the quality of life for local communities
IN an effort to ensure safe flight operations
the Department of Environment has completed a bird census around the protected natural areas near the San Javier Air Base
spans a 13-kilometre radius from the base and includes spots like the Mar Menor
requested by the Air Force’s General Air Command
plays a vital role in managing wildlife and avoiding bird collisions with aircraft
The most abundant species found in the area was the yellow-legged gull (Larus michaellis)
followed by the great cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) at 1,576
their presence is significant for the local ecosystem
These bird counts are conducted twice a year
once in winter (November to February) and again in summer
The winter count is done through direct observation at various wetlands
helping ensure the safety of both the wildlife and the base’s flight operations

A devastating crash on the La Manga motorway has left two people dead and eight others injured
The collision is believed to have started when a trailer carrying a large boat came loose from a vehicle
The boat ended up in the middle of the motorway
causing a pile-up involving around ten vehicles
may have been intended for illegal activities
— Niporwifi © (@niporwifi) November 17, 2024
The two victims were later confirmed to be male international tourists visiting the Murcia region
They were in the first car to crash into the boat
Firefighters worked for more than 30 minutes to recover their bodies from the wreckage
a 51-year-old man was critically hurt and rushed to Virgen de la Arrixaca Hospital in Murcia
including two women aged 18 and 55 and two men aged 19 and 29
were taken to Santa Lucía Hospital in Cartagena with various injuries
shutting down the motorway for three hours while emergency crews worked at the scene
Drivers were urged to find alternative routes to allow ambulances and rescue teams to get through
Authorities are now reviewing traffic cameras to identify the fleeing vehicle
Investigators believe the boat could be linked to criminal activities and are working to uncover more details
THE Department of Environment, with the go-ahead from the Coastal Demarcation, is set to install anti-jellyfish nets at five popular swimming spots in La Manga and San Pedro del Pinatar by the end of July
This is the first time these nets will be back in the Mar Menor since 2022
The beaches getting the nets are Villananitos
heeding scientists’ warnings about a likely jellyfish boom this summer
the nets were banned to avoid creating barriers that would disrupt water flow and lead to decomposing algae build-up
The installation of these nets could have mixed effects on the area
they will make the beaches safer and more enjoyable for swimmers
there are concerns about the environmental impact
such as potential disruptions to water circulation and the accumulation of decomposing algae
Balancing the benefits of safer swimming areas with the need to protect the delicate ecosystem of the Mar Menor is a key challenge for the authorities

HOUSING prices around the Mar Menor are hitting new highs yet again as demand for seaside living pushes costs up over 10 per cent each month, according to Idealista
In Cartagena
buying a home now costs around €1,229 per square metre
prices are even steeper at €1,553 per square metre
the Mar Menor’s attraction keeps driving prices up
especially with its close proximity—just 25 minutes by car—to the city
Torre Pacheco, only 21 minutes from Cartagena, has also seen a price hike, with the square metre now at €1,410, up 18 per cent in the past year. San Javier isn’t far behind
Luxury spots like La Manga and Cabo de Palos are even pricier
while Cabo de Palos tops the charts at €3,464 per square metre
The steep prices are due to limited availability
This national trend of rising prices is prompting the Spanish government to focus on increasing affordable housing
the goal is to create 911 affordable rental homes
including 569 specifically for social rental
Tips for Navigating the Mar Menor Housing Market:

holiday rentals in La Manga del Mar Menor have witnessed an increase in demand
despite price increases ranging from 9 per cent to 12 per cent
‘Right now we’re at around 96 per cent
practically fully booked for July and August.’
Concerns over the state of the Mar Menor have prompted holidaymakers from areas like Los Alcázares to seek rentals in La Manga
offering access to both the Mediterranean Sea and the Mar Menor in a less affected zone
‘Many who used to rent in other Mar Menor areas have shifted to La Manga.’
The typical summer tourist profile remains largely national, especially from the Murcia region
Foreign tourism is more common post-summer
there’s been a rise in year-round rentals
establishing La Manga as a second residence with properties available for year-round rental snapped up within five or six days
Despite the increased year-round population
commercial and hospitality activity hasn’t significantly improved
fewer than half of La Manga’s businesses are active
Many are forced to close due to low clientele during these months
If this trend continues local businesses will also benefit from this tourism shift
