António Morgado holds off Santiago Buitrago for third in La Nucía
Marc Hirschi (Tudor Pro Cycling) sprinted away from Christian Scaroni (XDS Astana) in the final 200 metres to win the Clàssica Comunitat Valenciana 1969 - Gran Premi València
the second race of the 2025 men's European racing season.
António Morgado (UAE Team Emirates) moved ahead of Santiago Buitrago (Bahrain Victorious) in the chase of the two attackers to secure the final spot on the podium
with Jan Christen (UAE Team Emirates) taking fifth
It was Hirschi's debut in the black and red for Tudor Pro Cycling and he impressed on the Spanish roads where he has recently trained with is new teammates
The peloton raced 184km from Valencia to La Nucía
On the flat procession of the opening 50km to the start of climbing
Martin Pedersen (Lidl-Trek Future Racing) and Xavier Cañellas (Sabgal-Anicolor) pushed their advantage to just over three minutes
crossing the category 3 Alto de Barx with the gap slipping to 2:20
Riders from Bahrain-Victorious and Tudor Pro Cycling took some turns at the front of the peloton
the pack biding time for the mountains ahead - the category 2 Alto de Coll de Rates
and the category 3 Alto de Turrón Duro
used by teams for training and testing during camps
with Pedersen caught by the peloton at the base of the climb and his companions apprehended one kilometre later
Bahrain Victorious put the pressure on right away
After a 15km descent and 11km to the final ascent
a small group of riders pushed ahead and opened a 20-second gap.
Attacks began from the move on a small descent leading to the Alto de Turrón Duro
Christen and Scaroni chased him on the narrow
Buitrago faded from the lead group on the descent
where the tarmac improved on the road into La Nucía.

Bahrain Victorious net 1-2 with Pello Bilbao close behind teammate in second as Vacek holds race lead
catching and passing teammate Pello Bilbao in the final kilometre
The Colombian was able to sit on the wheels as the other teams chased Bilbao and then jumped away
Bilbao finished eight seconds down on Buitrago
with a strong João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) third at 13 seconds
The other big-name overall contenders were scattered across a minute
Mathias Vacek (Lidl-Trek) went deep to try to keep the leader's yellow jersey
only 57 seconds down on Buitrago and so kept the race lead by just a few seconds
thanks to Lidl-Trek's dominant victory in the stage 1 team time trial
with Buitrago third overall at five seconds
Bahrain Victorious lost 1:11 to Lidl-Trek in the stage 1 team time trial but Buitrago and Bilbao pulled back time on many of his overall rivals before more hilly stages to Alpuente and then Portell de Morella
The 166km second stage from La Nucía to Benifato (Font de Partegat) visited the training roads many riders use during winter training camps near the Costa Blanca
The early climbs made a perfect springboard for attacks before a ride along the coastline and back into the hills
Riders from the US Project Echelon Racing team were active and went on the attack but five riders eventually got away and were given their freedom
They were Samuele Zoccarato (Polti VisitMalta)
Matyáš Kopecký (Team Novo Nordisk)
Sinuhé Fernández (Burgos Burpellet BH)
Quentin Bezza (Wagner Bazin WB) and Vicente Rojas (VF Group-Bardiani CSF-Faizanè)
Zoccarato became the virtual race lead as Lidl-Trek controlled the peloton and allowed the break to open a four-minute lead
The race changed with 65km to go when the race hit the Coll de Rates
where Tadej Pogačar took the Strava record in December with a team effort and powerful ride.
UAE Team Emirates-XRG and especially Ivo Oliveira took over on the front of the peloton
with only Kopecký and Fernández staying clear
They made it over the top of the climb but were within sight on the fast
The peloton came back together with 25km to go as the final climb neared
The 5.5km Benimantell formed the first step up to the finish
with the subsequent climb to Alto de Partegat some 4.3km long but at 9.4%
Tobias Foss (Ineos Grenadiers) took off alone at this point as the British team lived up to their promise to race more aggressively
He opened a 20-second gap and forced rival teams to show their hand
splitting the chase group and hurting everyone
as many riders suffered on their 2025 debut and first big race effort
Foss made it to the Benimantell KOM but Almeida's surge eventually drew out Pello Bilbao (Bahrain Victorious) and Iván Romeo (Movistar)
They then jumped across to Foss and the trio began the Alto de Partegat with a handful of seconds
The trio opened a 15-second gap and seemed likely to stay clear but Almeida did some more huge turns and refused to let them go
Foss and then Romeo cracked but Bilbao pushed on and seemed in control
even if the gap fell gradually as the gradient steepened
Perhaps ordered by his Bahrain Victorious team car or instinctively
Buitrago took off alone with 600 metres to go
cruelly surged past Bilbao and won the stage

As every year, February marks in the province of Alicante the beginning of one of the most important cycling events at a national and international level: the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana (VCV). In its 76th edition, the competition will have the support of the Legislature de Alicante and will feature two prominent stages on the Costa Blanca.
The city of Orihuela will be the setting for the opening day on Wednesday, February 5, with a 21-mile (34 kilometers) team time trial that will finish in Orihuela Costa and will create the first differences in the general classification.
The next day, Thursday, February 6, the race will experience a mountainous challenge of 103 miles (166 kilometers) between La Nucía and l'Alt de Partegat (Benifato). This stage is expected to be decisive for the title contenders, with a route that includes demanding climbs such as the Coll de Rates and l'Alt de Benimantell, as well as an unprecedented finish in the competition.
The Sports Deputy, Bernabé Cano, has emphasized the importance of this event for the province: "Alicante once again consolidates itself as an ideal destination for cycling thanks to its orography, climate, and magnificent fans, who come out to the streets every year to support the riders and enjoy the spectacle."
The VCV 2025 will extend until February 9, with a total of five stages and the presence of some of the best teams in the international peloton. The Legislature de Alicante strengthens its support for this event, which contributes to the promotion of sports and the tourist image of the Costa Blanca.
The inauguration of the competition will feature the presence of the vice president of the Legislature, Marina Sáez, who will participate in the awards ceremony of the first day. Meanwhile, Bernabé Cano will be present at the start and finish of the second stage, a key day for the outcome of the race.

Located just 10 kilometres from the tourist trap of Benidorm, the small Spanish town of La Nucía couldn't be more different than its neighbour.
The municipality has followed a strict policy of sustainability for the past 20 years, winning three Architizer awards for its ecological architecture.
Residents of the town are heavily involved in its sustainable action too. Recharging electric cars is free to all, while the more residents recycle, the fewer taxes they pay.
Discussing the sustainable transformation, Mayor Bernabé Cano points to a number of factors. "The first step was to remove the traffic from the old town. Afterwards, several lines of work were created. We created new green areas, replanted all the landscaped areas with native pines to create lungs throughout the municipality," says Bernabé.
"This was accompanied by a single-family home architecture where there is no housing concentration zone."

the town's architects have been heavily involved in creating sustainable buildings
an architect at Studio Crystalzoo looks for new ways to save energy in the town every day
"The approach that we've had is to review the sustainable methodology of this area
Collect and propose how it was built in the past
Work with controlled lights within the complex," he says
"In the end what you are going to have is buildings with great thermal inertia
But over time it is much more profitable economically."
This cutting-edge work has led famous sports people to the town too
Olympic champions and the English football team have come to train here
drawn by its 400,000 square metre sustainable sports complex
But it's not only sporty types who have been attracted to La Nucia
More foreigners than locals make up the population
Due to its sustainable credentials and green investment
the town has seen its population triple since 2001

Barça Atlètic need just one point to make sure of a place in the play-offs for a place in the second division next season
but they didn't get it today against La Nucía
but the only goal of the evening was scored by Arnau Tenas in his own net
so now Barça need to make sure they win next week at the Estadi Johan Cruyff against Logroñés
Luismi Curz and Txus Alba early on and Sergi Rosanas just before the break had the best Barça chances of the first half
all those first half efforts were in vain.La Nucia also had their moments
but there was very little to truly worry Arnau Tenas until Mariano Sanz did find the net
and just when Barça were looking more dangerous than ever
a La Nucia cross that didn't seem too much of an issue turned nasty and Arnau Tenas ended up scoring in his own net
Barça looked to have levelled things right at the end
but Pocho Román's shot was amazingly saved by the home keeper
This was a game the Catalans really should have won
but football can be a cruel game sometimes
