Yesterday we spent a fascinating day at the Iturri footwear factory in La Palma del Condado watching UK Forces combat boots being made
Just one of many footwear factories used by the company in Spain and around the world, the La Palma plant is currently part way through a roughly three week long, 500 pairs per day, production batch of Cold Wet Weather combat boots for the UK Ministry of Defence
After the uppers are assembled at a factory in Morocco they are transported by lorry and ferry to the Spanish factory
pack them ready for transportation to the UK for distribution and issue to Royal Marines and British Army personnel deploying to Arctic and and other cold wet weather regions
Over the next couple of weeks we plan to produce a full feature on the Iturri footwear manufacturing operation

the technical team of the new NGO for the development of the Salesian Province of Spain-Mary Help of Christians (SMX)
to define the strategic guidelines of the new NGO project and to continue advancing in the coordination and work of different areas
Progress was made as regards the organization's Strategic Plan by studying the current situation of the NGO through a SWOT analysis - a tool to study the situation of a company
analyzing its internal characteristics and its external situation in a square matrix
the conclusions of these strategic lines will be passed on to the social base to help define the priorities of the institution
The elaboration of this Strategic Plan is accompanied by Óscar González López
both for his formation and experience in accompanying strategic processes with other bodies
and because he is currently the Director of Salesian houses in La Palma del Condado and Carmona and he has been a member of the NGO "Solidaridad Don Bosco" for many years

a great help that should help to continue the journey

JOINT-FORCES accepted an invitation visit an ITURRI boot factory in Spain
Although ITURRI have supplied both combat boots and formal footwear
plus garments from dress shirts to breathable waterproofs
to the UK Ministry of Defence for a good many years it is possibly not a name that many readers will be familiar with as
overt display of brand names was prohibited on products in some categories
Seville-based ITURRI actually supplied a boot in all five categories for the MoD 2012 five-year contract
though only one of these was actually an ITURRI boot design and the others were established models from different manufacturers (ALTBERG
The fifth 2012 boot model was in the Cold Wet Weather category and these were supplied in KARRIMOR boxes
but while visiting the Spanish company’s HQ our suspicions were confirmed that this was actually their own winter combat boot model which they marketed under a licensed franchise name
This March an ITURRI Cold Wet Weather boot batch destined for issue to UK MoD personnel earmarked for deployment to Norway
the Baltic and other cold and wet climes later this year was under production at ITURRI’s La Palma del Condado factory
situated just off the main motorway between Seville and Huelva
As I had a gap in my schedule on account of UK MoD not currently inviting specialist defence media like us to cover training exercises – we understand ‘not on the MoD target audience aims’ is the current civil service buzzword – I naturally grabbed the opportunity to watch how these boots
which I had previously taken out to Norway to review on TRIDENT JUNCTURE 2018
This is actually the fourth footwear factory making combat boots for UK MoD that I have visited over the last few years
but as each manufacturer does things slightly differently it was a very interesting visit
ITURRI not only manufacture boots and shoes at various locations around Spain
including on Majorca where high quality traditional dress shoes are made for UK Forces
but they also have production facilities in Eastern Europe
The footwear factory at La Palma del Condado in south-west Spain is one of their older facilities
and indeed plans are underway to replace it with a larger plant on family land a little to the east of La Palma; the company
founded in 1947 as a ship’s chandlers on the banks of the navigable Guadalquivir in the heart of Seville
as well as their footwear and specialist clothing ranges
ITURRI are also a major supplier of equipment and vehicles to the emergency services around the globe and they have offices in 25 countries
In due course we intend to bring you a review of the ITURRI Boots Patrol
which I plan to shortly take with me overseas on assignment

The world’s eyes are currently on the small island of La Palma in the Atlantic archipelago of the Canaries after a week of volcanic eruptions which have seen hundreds of homes destroyed and thousands evacuated
Most people around the world had never heard of La Palma before
but even in Spain many couldn’t point it out exactly on the map
with some Spanish mainland-based news sources mislabelling the eruption as being in the neighbouring island of Gran Canaria
as several online commentators suggested a volcano had erupted 2,621 kilometres away in Mallorca
Ay dios 🤦♂️ Evacúan a pobladores por erupción de un volcán en Palma de Mallorca https://t.co/byEGRY36vq vía @BAENegocios
While some may forgive the mistakes being made abroad
for some islanders from Spain's two archipelagos - The Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands - it's not good enough for journalists in Madrid and Barcelona to get it wrong
there are several places in Spain that have the word Palma (“palm” in Spanish) in them
Whether for disambiguation purposes or to make sure you don’t book a flight to the wrong part of Spain one day
here’s how to tell apart the main “Palma” places
This is the capital of the Canary island of Gran Canaria and the most populated city in the archipelago with 381,000 inhabitants
Its name is very similar to La Palma but it’s different in that it’s plural
Many Canary islanders just refer to it as just Las Palmas (located in the map below in the northeastern tip sticking out)
It’s also worth noting that Las Palmas de Canaria is also the name of the province which encompasses four of the eight Canary Islands: Gran Canaria
Lanzarote and tiny La Graciosa...but coincidently not La Palma
which is part of the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife
The locals from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria are officially referred to as palmenses
although on other islands people usually call them canariones as is the same for all inhabitants of the island of Gran Canaria
The name of Majorca’s capital is different from La Palma and Las Palmas in that it doesn’t include the definite article (la
female version of “the”) and it is singular (no “s” at the end of article or noun)
Palma is nowhere near La Palma or Las Palmas
as it's in the Balearics islands to the east of Spain
and the Canaries are all the way down near the coast of northwest Africa
City and island officials cannot make their mind up whether to refer to the Balearic capital as Palma de Mallorca or just Palma on everything from street signs to regional websites
Different governments have changed the nomenclature back and forth three times over the past 12 years
Some say that the full name confuses tourists who can’t tell the difference between Mallorca the island and Palma the city
with tour operators arguing that foreigners don’t associate the name Palma on its own to Mallorca
thus seeing a drop in holiday packages sold
Historians and nationalists on the other hand believe the name Palma by itself is more accurate to the city’s Latin origins
People from Palma de Mallorca are referred to as palmesanos
La Palma is the name for the northwestern Canary island which has been hit by a wave of volcanic eruptions over the past week
Its name is different from Las Palmas (de Gran Canaria) in that the article and noun are singular
and distinguishable from the Majorcan capital in that it has “la” in front of Palma
There is a longer official name which can be used for disambiguation - San Miguel de La Palma - but nobody really uses it
You can also say la isla de La Palma (the island of La Palma) in conversation and when searching for flights (preferably when the eruptions are over)
whereas Las Palmas de Gran Canaria’s is LPA and Palma de Mallorca’s is PMI
La Palma is known to Canary islanders as La Isla Bonita (The Beautiful Island)
which is saying something given the natural wonders found across the archipelago
superb hiking routes (it’s the greenest of all the islands) and of course its actively volcanic nature make it a memorable destination for many who want more peace and quiet than in neighbouring Tenerife and Gran Canaria
It’s well worth a visit once the eruptions have ended
palmeros (as the islanders are known) and the local economy will need it to rebuild homes and restore livelihoods
but it’s also possible to fly to nearby Tenerife and catch a short flight over or a ferry which takes 2 to 3 hours
Just remember - when you do your search for flights to La Palma
there's La Palma de Cervelló and La Palma d'Ebre in Catalonia
La Palma del Condado in southern Huelva province and many more

an elderly couple returning home from vacation discovered that their apartment had been "occupied" by African migrants
When a camera crew from the Madrid television channel Telecinco went to investigate
Spain's notoriously lethargic justice system now rules on who is the apartment's rightful owner
in a case study of political correctness run amok
ordered police to keep out of the neighborhood of Lavapiés
are now secure in the knowledge that their violent actions have empowered them effectively to take control of an entire neighborhood of a major European capital
one of the most "multicultural" districts of the Spanish capital
to "avoid situations of tension." Pictured: Police officers in Lavapiés on November 12

Six African migrants gang-raped a 12-year-old girl in a small town near Madrid
but Spanish authorities kept information about the crime hidden from the public for more than a year
apparently to avoid fueling anti-immigration sentiments
the 12-year-old girl was playing in a park in Azuqueca de Henares with several other girls when
six migrants — five Moroccans and one Nigerian — approached the playground
They carried two of the girls off to a nearby abandoned building
but then let one of them go after discovering that she was a Muslim
grabbed the 12-year-old by her arms and legs and took turns raping her
The public was not informed about the crime until March 20, 2019, when the newspaper El Mundo published the results of an investigation
Spanish prosecutors and judges secretly decided that three of the minors will be held in a young offender institution for three years and then be "reinserted" into Spanish society rather than be deported
One of the adults is being held in preventive detention; the other adults were released
The gang rape has cast a spotlight on spiraling migrant criminality in Spain, where "progressive" immigration policies — promoted by all the mainstream political parties and opposed only by the populist party Vox — are fueling an influx of illegal migration from Africa
The gang rape has also cast a spotlight on a lenient justice system that routinely releases migrant criminals back onto the streets
Reliable statistics on migrant-related crimes are unavailable: the data compiled by the Spanish Interior Ministry on specific categories of crimes (homicide
etc.) do not break down the offenders by nationality
while another shows that there were 1,382 — a difference of 60%
The official Spanish statistics agency (Instituto Nacional de Estadística, INE) shows that immigrants comprise roughly 10% of the overall Spanish population, but 32% of the Spanish prison population
The INE does not break the statistics down by the nationality of the inmates
although Interior Ministry data show that the majority of immigrants arrested in 2017 were from just two countries: Romania (18,032) and Morocco (17,464)
anecdotal evidence found in the crime reports of local newspapers shows that migrant criminality — ranging from petty theft to sexual assault to murder — is a growing problem nationwide
In Barcelona, for example, 15 members of a North African itinerant crime gang known as "Allah's Wolfpack" sexually assaulted a woman at a metro station
some of whom are unaccompanied minors and all of whom are in Spain illegally
had long rap sheets and were well known to the police
The attack, which occurred in the Barcelona suburb of Santa Coloma on November 11
took place when a couple attempted to exit the Can Peixauet subway station
hurled insults and verbal abuse at the couple as they walked off a train
where they assaulted the woman and stabbed her male companion
Police later found the youths in a nearby abandoned building
and where they had previously been arrested in connection with a series of robberies in the area
Police also said the youths were infected with scabies
which required police to activate a special decontamination protocol for the officers involved
Eight of the 15 youths have since been released from police custody and are back on the street
Migrant gang rapes have become increasingly common in Spain:
The victims of migrant-related sex crimes often are young children and teenagers as well as elderly women:
Other migrant-related sex crimes in Spain include:
Migrant-related honor crimes and domestic violence:
Underage unaccompanied migrants — known in Spain as Menas (menores extranjeros no acompañados) — are also engaged in criminal activity:
Some migrant criminals are serial offenders:
Elderly and handicapped persons are also increasingly victims of migrant-related assaults and robberies:
aggravated assaults and violent robberies include:
Violence is also on the rise at migrant shelters:
Migrants have been increasingly attacking law enforcement officers:
Several migrant-related criminal cases are working their way through Spain's judicial system
which in some instances has shown leniency:
which often favors tenants at the expense of landlords
the woman will face an uphill battle to regain control of her apartment
The couple is presently living with family members while Spain's notoriously lethargic justice system now rules on who is the apartment's rightful owner
Also in Madrid, hundreds of undocumented migrants from sub-Saharan Africa went on a rampage in Lavapiés
The riots were the direct result of many years of extreme deference by Spanish officialdom toward illegal immigrants
and a sweeping failure to enforce the law — all
Mbaye died, according to initial reports, after allegedly being chased by police from Puerta del Sol, in the city center, to Lavapiés, where he collapsed. On April 22, 2019, however, a court in Madrid confirmed that Mbaye did not die as the result of a police chase
he had heart disease and died of cardiac arrest while walking with a friend in Lavapiés
"The events do not reveal even the slightest indication that the deceased was personally subjected to any type of harassment or previous police persecution that could have triggered the lethal effects of the cardiac pathology from which he suffered," the court ruled
"There is no objective data or any witness to affirm the existence of such harassment or persecution
which has no support other than the mere assertions of the appellant [an NGO called SOS Racism Madrid]."
Mbaye's death nevertheless sparked violent protests that lasted for several days and caused massive destruction of public and private property
The Madrid city council, run by Mayor Manuela Carmena, in a case study of political correctness run amok, ordered police to keep out of the neighborhood of Lavapiés to "avoid situations of tension." The result is that illegal immigrants
