The Junta de Andalucía's Ministry of Health confirmed on Thursday the death in Navarre of a woman infected with the West Nile virus (WNV)
She had visited Utrera (Seville province) and
This brings the death toll from this virus to six just this summer
all of them in the one Andalusian province or related to it in some way
Ministry sources confirmed that the woman had visited Utrera in Seville province on 12 August and had then travelled back home where she eventually died due to this virus that can only be transmitted to people via mosquito bites
To the death of the woman infected in Utrera are added the deaths of three people from Coria del Río
one of them an elderly woman over 87 years of age (also with pre-existing medical issues) and another elderly person aged 71
The other two were another 71-year-old woman from Dos Hermanas (with pre-existing conditions) and a woman aged 86 who was infected in La Puebla del Río
There are also dozens of cases of infection via mosquito bites
the only way of transmitting the virus to humans
with the regional health ministry reporting a total of 60 cases this summer in Coria del Río
Specifically in relation to the Carmona resident infected with the virus
it has emerged this Thursday that he had died after having his case of infection confirmed
The councillor in charge of health matters at Carmona town hall
said in statements to Canal Sur Radio that this resident of El Corzo housing estate was already suffering from other ailments and died "from other medical complications" unrelated to WNV itself
Currently the Junta's PEVA plan (Andalucía's strategic plan to monitor and control all bugs and insects that could impact health) obliges all municipalities affected by the problem of mosquitoes transmitting WNV to deploy their municipal plans for preventive fumigation of these insects
the affected municipalities are demanding greater "involvement" from the Junta in this problem
especially that the costs of fumigation and disinfection should not be borne exclusively by the individual town halls
Seville's provincial authority (Diputación) has contracted two specialist pest-controlling companies
to strengthen the efforts required of the municipalities
The towns listed by the Junta as needing this additional
infected residents have also been confirmed in Alcalá de Guadaíra

Hundreds of residents who live on the banks of the Guadalquivir River in Spain’s Seville province gathered on Monday to protest the alleged inaction around the deadly West Nile virus.
The mosquito-borne virus has already claimed the lives of two women in the province — one in the capital city and another in La Puebla del Rio
“La Puebla del Rio is a ghost town after eight at night,” protester Raquel Herrera told local daily Diario de Sevilla
we can’t go out because it’s too hot
we can’t go out at dusk because of the mosquitos.”
Protesters told the newspaper that they believe around 20 people are currently hospitalized in the area due to the disease
but suggested that many others have had milder symptoms
“I am super scared,” said protest organizer Juan Jose Sanchez Silva
“The situation is going from bad to worse
and in the upcoming years we could see Yellow Fever
the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) alerted that mosquito-borne illnesses have been spreading across Europe and that conditions in Spain were ripe for outbreaks this year
Mosquitos of the species Culex pipiens spread West Nile
but their period of activity is lengthening due to climate change
but this spring a case of West Nile was already reported in Seville in March
West Nile has been considered endemic in Spain since 2003
around 80% of West Nile infections are asymptomatic
with most of the rest triggering fever or other symptoms like headaches
around one out of 150 infected people develop serious
according to the Centers for Disease Control
protesters called on the government for solutions such as better mosquito control
specific protocols at health clinics and more funding for vaccine development
there are no vaccines or medicines to prevent West Nile in humans
the ECDC also warned Europe to brace for an increase in dengue fever this summer because of travelers importing the illness from the ongoing outbreak in South America and causing local transmission
The number of locally transmitted cases in Europe increased by 83% between 2022 and 2023

The intermittent rainy weather across Spain in recent weeks has brought with it a potentially deadly threat
The country’s water reserves might be brimming
but so are mosquito populations and West Nile virus counts
Spanish health authorities have kicked off a contingency plan to prevent the spread of the virus to humans
After weeks of heavy rainfall and rising temperatures
the South of Spain is on high alert for a potential comeback of the deadly West Nile Virus (WNV)
And with over 100 municipalities now classed as high risk
public health officials aren’t taking any chances
10 of them in Sevilla province alone – making it ground zero once again
with conditions ripe for mosquito breeding
authorities are pulling out all the stops to prevent history repeating itself
the province has launched a €6 million blitz against the virus
dubbed the “Control y Seguimiento de Mosquitos Transmisores del Virus del Nilo Occidental,” kicked off last Friday
in La Puebla del Rio with a show of drones
fumigators and even rice field water samples taken in front of the press
president of the Sevilla Provincial Council
proudly announced that they’ve brought this year’s prevention campaign forward by four months compared to 2024
we’re doing even earlier this time,” he said
The operation covers 15 municipalities near the Guadalquivir River
It targets both mosquito larvae and the bloodsucking adults
with aerial spraying planned once rice paddies flood – especially near towns
According to a March 2025 report by the Junta de Andalucia
Cadiz follows Seville with 16 towns at high risk
more than 700 locations are under some level of surveillance or control
traps and larval controls will kick in as soon as the skies dry up
Officials say the goal is clear: kill the bugs before they grow wings
Seville’s Virgen del Rocio Hospital is opening a second West Nile Virus testing lab – previously
all samples went to Granada’s Virgen de las Nieves
‘This will save us precious time in public health decision-making,’ said Rocío Hernández
A €1.2 million investment will also go toward increasing testing of mild cases and improving the predictive models
Any detection of infected mozzies within 1.5 km of towns will now trigger immediate alert status
Officials there reckon things are ‘within the normal range’ despite the floods earlier this year
said early treatment – starting in February – plus access to protected wetlands like Doñana
They’re even planning to hit the Marismas del Odiel this time – a nature reserve previously off-limits due to bird nesting
‘We’re balancing environmental protection with tourism and public health,’ said Cáceres
The province’s €3.3 million pest control operation will cover towns like Punta Umbria
A broader prevention plan is also set to go before local mayors for approval
After heavy rains left puddles across the city
local authorities have begun larvicide treatments using biological products
the city’s councillor for environmental sustainability
said: ‘We’ve got a year-round mosquito control service in place
and now we’re intensifying it to minimise nuisance to residents.’
Thanks to Andalucia’s newly approved 2025 Vector Surveillance and Control Programme
even municipalities with “low risk” status must create local Mosquito Control Plans
The regional government has reminded town halls that mozzies aren’t just annoying – they’re a public health threat and must be tackled like any other pest
Local health officers will guide and monitor these plans
or the insects themselves – the area will instantly move up to “high alert,” with mandatory new measures
West Nile Virus is spread through the bite of Culex mosquitoes – the kind that breed in stagnant water after rain
Now it’s up to all of us to stop the bite before it starts

Spanish health authorities have raised the alarm over a rising number of West Nile disease cases
The disease is reportedly spreading in Spain
particularly in the Sevilla and Huelva regions
The Andalucian health department has reported six cases in Dos Hermanas
three cases were identified in Coria del Rio
Mairena del Aljarafe and Alcala de Guadaira
Officials are growing increasingly concerned about the surge in cases of the mosquito-borne disease
The Junta de Andalucia's Ministry of Health has confirmed the presence of the West Nile virus in mosquito test captures carried out between 1 and 8 August in several municipalities in the Seville province
Los Palacios y Villafranca and Villamanrique de la Condesa
Many of these areas are popular with British tourists and expats
One in five people who contract the virus develop symptoms such as fever
More severe cases can present with seizures
The Health and Consumer Affairs department has issued guidelines to local municipal authorities in Andalucia
urging them to monitor for additional cases and encourage preventative measures among the public to minimise transmission risk
According to the weekly public health report
Dos Hermanas and Bollullos de la Mitacion (Seville) and Barbate (Cadiz) are experiencing high levels of female mosquitoes capable of transmitting diseases
Medium levels have been reported in Almensilla (Seville) and in Benalup-Casas Viejas and Vejer de la Frontera (Cadiz)
Since the beginning of 2024 up until 21 August 2024
human cases of West Nile virus (WNV) infection have been reported by eight EU/EEA countries and two EU-neighbouring countries
The Ministry of Health is advising people to take preventive measures to avoid mosquito bites during peak hours around dawn and dusk
wearing light-coloured clothing that covers the skin
and installing mosquito nets where possible
the ECDC reported a total of 713 locally acquired cases of West Nile virus across nine European countries
with 67 unfortunate fatalities and the virus spreading to 22 new regions previously untouched by it
The main hotspots for the virus last year were Italy
The West Nile virus poses a significant threat to individuals over 50 and those who are vulnerable or have conditions such as diabetes
The virus can result in hospitalisation due to complications including meningitis and encephalitis

A virus has been found in parts of Seville
Tourists in Spain are told to be careful as nine cases of a dangerous virus have been confirmed in Seville
West Nile virus has been detected in mosquitoes in the region
so Britons should take steps to protect themselves
The cases were found in different parts of Seville
Those with the illness may also notice joint pains
develop rashes and have long-lasting fatigue
it can lead to hospitalisation or even death - particularly in elderly patients
locals in the area have protested the rise in cases
calling on the government to do more to stop the spread
While West Nile virus has occurred in Spain for 20 years
warmer conditions are thought to have led to the number of cases increasing
Holidaymakers have already been warned about mosquitos in other parts of Spain this summer
Last month, Aedes tiger mosquitos were found in containers arriving from Castellón in mainland Spain to the Canary Islands
Larvae and pupae were also spotted in Tenerife
Aedes mosquitos can transmit diseases such as dengue virus
which all have similar symptoms to West Nile virus
Of the nine West Nile cases reported in Seville
six of the patients have already been discharged from hospital
Travel is never guaranteed safe and Britons should always check the latest advice and tips before jetting off
This comes as a fresh warning has been shared for those looking to visit the Asian beach destination, Sri Lanka
A UK Government body warned there is also the risk of tourists catching serious illness
and holidaymakers have also been warned of an increased threat of crime and violence
Amid Spain’s continuing COVID-19 resurgence
a viral meningitis outbreak in two Andalusian towns has sent at least 19 people to hospital.
local officials confirmed that 12 of the 19 people struck with meningoencephalitis – an infection or inflammation of the brain – have tested positive for West Nile virus
The Andalusian government recommended that people in the towns of Puebla del Rio and Coria del Rio – which lie just 12 kilometers from Seville
the region’s capital of nearly 2 million people – use insect repellent
and avoid going outdoor during dawn and dusk
“This is like the seven plagues of Egypt,” a resident of Coria del Rio told Spanish daily El Pais
Seville was the epicenter of an outbreak of listeriosis that poisoned 222 people and caused three deaths
residents of Coria del Rio found their sewage system emitting toxic fumes
And now West Nile is further complicating the region’s health and economic recovery
West Nile is a relatively new problem in Spain
The virus was first detected in humans in Andalusia in 2010
and Spain’s National Epidemiology Center (CNE) has confirmed just a handful of cases since then
This appears to be the biggest outbreak on record
Experts suggest that a rainy spring combined with the COVID-19 lockdown in which fewer people were outdoor monitoring mosquitos may help explain the situation
around 80% of people infected with West Nile virus are asymptomatic
and less than 1% suffer from severe complications like meningitis or encephalitis
While complications are more likely to appear in the elderly or those who are immunocompromised
the newspaper ABC reported that a 14-year-old girl had been hospitalized
although the Andalusian health minister said the patients are between 35 and 85 years old
Natalia PenzaPublished: Invalid Date, A KILLER virus spread by mosquitoes could pose the next health risk for British holidaymakers travelling to Spain, experts say.
An outbreak of the deadly West Nile virus has already claimed the lives of two people in the southern Spanish city of Seville and put eight in hospital intensive care.
Pablo Barreiro, an expert in infectious diseases, today warned it could spread to the whole of Spain.
He said: “Only about two to five per cent of the cases present symptoms.
“It’s an illness that can go unnoticed very easily.”
A second person who was being treated at Seville’s Virgen del Rocio Hospital died on Friday, taking the death toll from the current outbreak of the virus to two.
Eight of the 23 patients who have been admitted to hospital are said to be in intensive care.
The first person to die was a 77-year-old man who lost his fight of life on Thursday. The second fatality was an 85-year-old woman.
Regional health chiefs have ordered a massive fumigation of the area most affected, the wetlands of the Guadalquivir River in the municipalities of Coria and La Puebla del Rio near Seville.
West Nile virus (WNV) is spread by mosquitoes and was discovered in Uganda in 1937.
Most people infected with the virus, around 80 per cent, show no symptoms at all.
However, some will experience flu-like symptoms including headaches and a fever.
In severe cases – less than one per cent – infected patients can go on to develop severe neurological problems including meningitis, encephalitis and paralysis, which can result in death.
Healthy people usually recover quickly and suffer little to no side effects.
Those aged over 50, or those with underlying medical conditions, are most at risk of serious complications.
But overnight it emerged a resident of a third municipality, Los Palacios y Villafranca, had been hospitalised with an inflammation of the brain known as meningoencephalitis after being bitten by an infected mosquito.
The area's town hall said yesterday: “Today mayor Juan Manuel Valle has been informed a person from Los Palacios and Villafranca has been hospitalised with meningoencephalitis caused by West Nile Virus.
“This has been confirmed officially with the relevant health authority and with the person’s relatives.”
Insisting the virus could spread across Spain in the future, especially in the hot summer months, Mr Barreiro said prevention based around the regular use of mosquito repellent was the most effective solution.
West Nile virus, spread by the Culex mosquito, first reached Spain in 2004 with horses being most affected.
which includes popular Brit holiday areas like the Costa del Sol and is the most populated of the country’s regions with nearly nine million residents
Elderly people and those with underlying health conditions like diabetes and cancer are most at risk
Wetlands and swimming pools in countryside areas have been identified as the places where the mosquitoes carrying the virus are most likely to be found

The last time I visited Anselma the shutters were down and the mosaics above the door read Comestibles (groceries)
People were spilling out onto the road and the faint rociero melody was interrupted intermittently by loud outbursts of "Come back at two
stopping the hordes from trying to squeeze in
The crowds realised that there was no space for them and dispersed
heading to bars recommended by Anselma: "They sing as well as we do
but you must come back at two." My friend and I held tight and she eventually beckoned us in
They performed upbeat bulerías and sevillanas to which a pair danced
An hour into the show (at around 1am) Anselma shouted to the audience: "Stop dancing
I want to sing!" and shimmied through the crowds to do what she knows best
Photograph: AlamyThe mostly Spanish audience sang along at the end of the show
But even without knowing a word of Spanish
I am sure you would still be blown away by the atmosphere and Anselma's cheeky charm
A family-run chiringuito (beach-side bar) that's so well hidden it's pretty unknown even to most locals
There's no mains electricity – it runs on a generator – but it serves the freshest fish you can imagine and has view of blue skies and sea
The menu features regular dishes such as tomates aliñados (tomatoes with garlic
fried eggs and green peppers but it's best to ask what the fisherman
Be sure to try the choco (cuttlefish) – I can guarantee it will be the biggest you've ever set your eyes on
The coquinas (small clams) are delicious too
and don't forget sardinas when they are in season (any month without "r" in Spanish)

Blanco Cerrillo is one of the oldest bars in Seville
Very simple and no fuss – perfect for eating fried fish tapas
It gets very packed and the tables outside (and any convenient space to place a tapa and beer) are usually occupied
you can normally holler your order and then inch your way to the bar
It is equipped with a team of three or four older waiters who are constantly shouting out the orders to the kitchen crew
Something that I loved here before the smoking ban was that one of them had a little ciggy nooky-hole and would serve you and go back for a crafty drag every once in a while – now he swigs from a small bottle of Cruzcampo beer instead
