Spain's most coveted Christmas lottery prize, 'El Gordo,' was the 72480, completely sold in Spain's La Rioja
The biggest prize in the raffle is 'The Fat One' in English
and all 193 series (of 10 decimos each) were sold in just one lottery administration
But how does Spain's Christmas lottery work
with a total prize pool of €2.7 billion and over 70% of Spaniards participating
It is also the second longest-running lottery in the world
even surviving the Spanish Civil War and the Covid-19 pandemic
including Catalonia's Sant Boi de Llobregat with 5.8 series
Catalonia saw €31,253,000 of the main prizes
Catalan lottery players may have been lucky if they had bought the 11840
Most of the décimos were sold outside of Catalonia
but the lottery administration sold 200 décimos in northern Catalonia's La Pobla de Segur
Many workers at the Blancafort Hotel in La Garriga were among the lucky winners of the third prize
"A worker said we could look for the ticket numbered 1840
and that's what we decided to do," one of the lucky lottery buyers told the Catalan News Agency (ACN)
surrounded by friends and family members who shouted with joy
"I am very happy because not only have we won the prize
many people have tickets and many of them have bought winning numbers for their relatives," said Eva León
Alella and Montgat were also among the lucky cities that sold the 77768
The lucky winners will receive €20,000 per décimo
Some series were sold in Sant Boi de Llobregat
About 20 minutes after the start of the lottery at 9 am
the students of San Ildefonso sang the number 37876 as the first big prize of the day
The first of the five prizes is a €6,000 décimo
While most tickets were sold in Valencia and the Canary Islands
some lucky buyers in the northern city of Girona and the inland town of Sort also bought 37876
74778, was sold in many places across Spain
some tickets were also sold in Catalonia in more than a dozen towns from the north to the south of the territory
was also sold all over Spain but not in Catalonia
Barcelona residents could have been lucky if they bought the fourth-fifth prize, 45456
there were no lucky tickets for the fifth-fifth prize
and 450 décimos (45 series) were sold in Barcelona
Tickets can be redeemed from December 23 to March 24
Can Mariano de Baró had bought several series of the 11840 number with several regular customers among the ticket holders
Bar owners were serving breakfast when the number was prized
"Celebrations will have to wait," Maria Pilar Devissa
as many customers were still having breakfast
Loteria Merche is a small family owned lottery administration in Girona currently managed by Carlos and Andreu
she sold some awards for the Christmas lottery
the two siblings sold tickets for the 37876
"It is very emotional," Carlos Voz told ACN on Sunday
they sold some tickets for the 'El Niño' lottery's first prize but never a winning ticket for the December 22 drawing
but we learned it was us when they called from the radio," Carlos and Andreu Voz said
All the winning tickets of the 37876 were mainly sold in person "between different customers" at the Loteria Merche in Girona
minutes after the 'El Gordo' was announced
one of the San Ildefonso school students sang a second time because "a boy asked me to do it," she said
The 43226 was the second "El Gordo" to sing
which sang earlier in the morning at 11:27 am
The event takes place every December 22
Only in Catalonia residents bought tickets worth €423,498,540
an increase of 3.64% compared to the last edition
people have spent the most on average, €108.44 per person
and each number is printed on 1,930 décimos
which means "a tenth of a ticket," is the most common ticket people buy
a cashback prize where you receive your €20 back if your ticket’s last digit matches the last digit of the winning number
Catalan News' podcast Filling the Sink explores the history of this festive prize draw and discovers how it is celebrated
We visit some of Barcelona’s most iconic ticket outlets to meet lottery vendors and discuss the odds of winning ‘El Gordo,’ as well as the controversy surrounding state taxation of winnings
We also chatted with some of the players about their lucky numbers and how they hope to beat the odds this year

Barcelona
Granollers and La RocaWe will see the important heritage of the region and experience the passion for motor racing
The trip we now begin in Vallès Oriental is focused on three towns close to each other
as well as the Circuit de Barcelona Catalunya
we will discover interesting sites from Roman times
Later we'll go to Granollers to walk through the squares in the town centre
in La Roca del Vallès we will follow a prehistoric route but we will quickly return to the present to explore the shops of La Roca Village
IN COLLABORATION WITH BARCELONA ÉS MOLT MÉS AND THE DIPUTACIÓ DE BARCELONA
We start in Montmeló
a town that will delight lovers of archaeological sites
There are two important sites: Can Tacó is a unique political-military Roman enclave
dated between the late 2nd century BC and early 1st century BC
It stands out for its perimeter wall with two large cisterns to collect rainwater and extensive remains of wall decorations in a fine state of conservation
It is listed as a Cultural Asset of National Interest by the Government of Catalonia
a Roman villa whose most notable element is a room that preserves the threshold of the front door
decorated with an exceptional piece of blue marble or limestone with white streaks and doorjamb holes
A journey to the past of the splendid Roman Empire to begin our exploration of the Vallès region
We have a radical change of theme but not of town. It is time for the smell of tarmac and to visit the famous Circuit de Barcelona Catalunya
The venue offers the opportunity to explore the facilities from inside on a tour of areas normally only frequented by drivers or mechanics and other parts that you may have seen on television but you can now discover for yourself
You will learn a little more about how a motorbike or Formula 1 race is organised
how the mechanics work or how the competition is supervised
Check the days when the guided tour is available
This afternoon we suggest a walk through the centre of the region's capital, Granollers
Plaça de la Porxada is the most photographed and renowned
when the Council of the town of Granollers commissioned a corn exchange from the Barcelona housemaster Bartolomé Brufalt
Plaça de la Porxada has witnessed the passage of thousands and thousands of locals and strangers and many important events
and the latter to Plaça de les Olles
Today the commercial spirit of the whole area is alive
and looking above the shops we will find very beautiful Gothic bay windows or in some cases if we look at the front doors we will see old porches or arcades
Plaça de Perpinyà (also known as Plaça dels Porcs)
Plaça de Maluquer i Salvador (also known as Plaça del Bestiar or de can Sínia) and Plaça de la Corona are other squares you must discover on this walk through Granollers
Very close to Granollers is La Roca del Vallès
One of the most outstanding and emblematic buildings in the town
is the castle on top a hill that still has the appearance of a fortress
We have references to it dating back to the 10th century
although it is known that it was extensively rebuilt in the late 15th century and restored in 1952
As it is a private castle and inhabited we cannot go inside but it is worth looking up and taking some photos
and given that we are in front of the gateways to the Serralada Litoral Park
we can take the Prehistoric Route of Céllecs on foot or by bike by following the signs of the PR C-36
which will take you to megalithic monuments such as the covered gallery of Can Gol
the dolmens of Céllecs and Can Planes
Constructions that show us that those ancestors already felt very much at home in this part of Vallès
© La Roca VillageDid you begin this trip on a Friday afternoon and so today is Sunday? You can still go shopping if that's what you want! La Roca Village is open every Sunday throughout the year and if you don't know this place on the outskirts of La Roca del Vallès we recommend a visit.

Catalonia's main highway, crossing the territory from north to south, the AP-7, is recording traffic jams of up to 20 kilometers due to several accidents between Santa Perpètua and Papiol heading south on Monday morning.
Authorities registered 11 kilometers during the early hours of Monday heading to Tarragona due to a clash between two cars. While heading to Girona, the fire on a truck blocked two lines and caused four kilometers of congestion.
Later in the morning, another clash between three cars in the area near La Roca del Vallès, caused several blocks heading to Barcelona, and a fourth clash, this one in Sant Cugat del Vallès, saw a truck derail while heading south.
The truck occupied three lines of the road, and the driver was injured, according to the Catalan firefighters.
Around 10:30 in the morning in the AP-7, there were 20 kilometers between Santa Perpètua i el Papiol heading south, and four between Papiol and Sant Cugat heading north.

The story of Lamine Yamal and his rapid rise to Barcelona’s first team
He has spent nine of those years playing for Barça
the club where he will soon begin his tenth season
The great pearl of La Masia can already sign his first professional contract and although he is still a teenager
Lamine faces his first year as a youth player with a background unbefitting of his age
His surname is Nasaraoui Ebana and not Yamal
With a Moroccan father and a mother from Equatorial Guinea
Lamine Yamal was born in Esplugues but his family moved first to Mataró and then to Granollers
He has lived his last years in Sant Joan Despí
Lamine is a much loved boy thanks to his very good behaviour
although he is also known for his jokes and gets on well with the other residents
Pasta is his favourite dish and he has a weakness for sweets
he follows the advice of director Mike Puig to the letter
Lamine Yamal began his football training at Barça
manages to put together a group of boys from 2007 who look very good
a very skilful left-footed striker who arrives from La Torreta
Some people have never heard of this modest club from La Roca del Vallés but the club's observers don't let any team in Catalonia go unwatched
a word that defines Lamine from his first training session and his first match
Lamine Yamal stands out for his technical quality
dribbling and passing with surgical precision
although in Barça's 1-3-2-1 formation
The leap to 11-a-side football is not easy
but for little Lamine football has no secrets
Lamine Yamal continues to rack up huge numbers of goals and assists
But the most remarkable thing about his football is that he lacks the selfishness typical of some technically gifted players
When you are better than your team-mates and opponents you run the risk of wanting to play alone
but Lamine never succumbed to that temptation
His football is explosive but at the same time generous
his plays are brilliant but he never loses sight of the fact that the goal is to win
Playing well and beautifully is not about showing off a fireworks technique
His dribbles or his brilliant touches are to break lines
His football is very aesthetic but always very practical too
the pandemic slowed down his projection -- in March 2020 he finished his first year at that level and the second resumed from the first weeks of 2021
having to play a compressed league schedule
Although he had played few matches in 11-a-side football due to the pandemic
the management of the youth team decided that he had to move directly to Iván Carrasco's Cadete A
It was a risky decision that worked out well
If in the two years at Infantil level Lamine alternated between the position of the No 9 with No 7
in the season 2021/22 Lamine consolidated himself as a brilliant false nine
Lamine was able to be a creator and a scorer
to participate a lot in the game and at the same time to step into the box to finish the job
His last game with the Cadete A in the final of the Catalan Championship against Sant Andreu was remarkable
The comments from the fans who came to Martorell agreed
The footballing display they had witnessed was of another level
Everything seemed to suggest that in his second year as a Cadet the club would decide to take him up a step and promote him to the Juvenil B
They opted for another unprecedented leap in the history of La Masia
a Cadet was to start the season for all intents and purposes with the Juvenil A team
Not even with Leo Messi was such a brave decision taken
Under the orders of Óscar López
Lamine Yamal once again surprised everyone with another extraordinary leap in quality
his position has changed again and he has consolidated himself during the whole season as a right winger
one of those who wait for the ball and try to unbalance defences and cross
He has made the team look for him in such a way that the game has pivoted towards a sector of the pitch that is normally only occasionally activated
Lamine made the right wing a starting position from which he has been able to link up with the full-back and the interior midfielder of his flank and in turn with the No 9 and the left winger in a very natural way
His symphony of passes sounded like heavenly music
but this past season he has managed to stand out with his pinpoint
His magical football made exclaim during a Barça TV commentary: "It's not Lamine Yamal
with whom you have to be daring but also patient
A 100 percent La Masia super-talent who Xavi will know how to mould and develop so that Cules can enjoy him for a long time to come

Improvements on AP-7 and AP-2 roads to avoid 6.3 million hours of traffic jams each year
ACN | Barcelona
will receive an economic boost from the Spanish government during the next seven years
as the country’s transport minister Raquel Sánchez announced on Friday morning during a visit to Barcelona
Both roads are managed by the executive and the investment would allow users to save €750 million but also time
"We expect to reduce traffic jams suffered by AP-7 and AP-2 highway users by 6.3 million hours of queues each year," Sánchez said
Improvements would open 42 different public contracts across 224 kilometers with the goal to offer new connectivity options and increase the capacity of the highways
The first investment of €52.6 million will go towards enhancing already existing connections between roads
The government will place €75.9 million more to build new ones
It will be the capacity and functionality of the improvements in the different highways that will take the vast majority of the funding
as the cabinet expects to use €687 million
The goal is to change the general functioning of both main Catalan roads as they are currently at their "maximum capacity," Xavier Flores
the ministry’s infrastructure secretary general.
Since tolls were lifted on August 31, 2021, almost one year ago
traffic congestion in the AP-2 has doubled
while trucks’ have increased their presence by three
AP-7 has seen a 40% increase in traffic and 80% more trucks
"What we want to do is to transform AP-7 and AP-2 to make them more resilient and secure," Flores said.
"It cannot be the case that when we have an accident or a truck has a tire puncture
everything collapses and we have traffic jams of dozens of kilometers
we have to have a road able to surpass all these issues," he added

Socialist leader Salvador Illa has been elected as the 133rd Catalan president during an eventful Thursday.
The investiture debate got underway amid huge uncertainty surrounding the whereabouts of former president Carles Puigdemont, who returned to Barcelona in the morning
and quickly fled the scene again instead of trying to enter the parliament or being arrested
The former Catalan president appeared in Barcelona for the first time in seven years just one hour before the debate started
and it was expected the Junts leader would try to enter the parliament and be arrested
while two Catalan police officers have been arrested for allegedly collaborating with his escape
During his investiture speech in parliament
Salvador Illa called for the amnesty law to be applied "quickly and without deceit" in order to "fully achieve normalization in Catalonia."
The candidate acknowledged that he leads a minority group in the chamber
as the Socialists have only 42 MPs with 68 needed for a majority.
The investiture debate was carried out with complete normality until lunch time
when pro-independence party Junts requested the debate be suspended
The Parliament bureau had a long meeting to discuss what steps to take
Junts asked for the session to be suspended after learning that their general secretary
was summoned by police to testify over Puigdemont's whereabouts
the request to suspend the session was rejected and the debate continued.
Illa's investiture marks a significant turning point for Catalan politics
The Socialist is the first president in favor of Spanish unity since 2010
while the chamber no longer has a pro-independence majority as it has for many years
Illa intends to "move forward and leave the past behind" from these years of pro-independence governments.
The Socialist started to lead the Catalan branch of the party in 2021, when he announced he would be the party's candidate for the February 14 election, in which he won most votes, but without options to form a majority.
Before that point, Salvador Illa had been the Spanish health minister from 2020 to 2021 under Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez in his first cabinet, and during the Covid-19 pandemic.
During the last term, Illa led the opposition but supported Esquerra's minority government on several occasions.
Salvador Illa was born in La Roca del Vallès, outside of Barcelona, on May 5, 1966.
He has a degree in philosophy from Universitat de Barcelona.
His political career began as a councilor in La Roca del Vallès in 1987. He became mayor of the town in 1999 and stepped down in 2005.
He also worked at the Department of Justice of the Catalan government and on the Economic Office of Barcelona's city council.
For a period, he also worked outside of politics at an audiovisual production company.
Protesting prison workers have lifted all remaining blockades of Catalan prisons after two days of demonstrations sparked by the death of a cook at the hands of an inmate.
On Friday night, most blockades were removed but remained in place at the Quatre Camins and Joves prisons in La Roca del Vallès, near Barcelona, and at the Wad Ras women's prison in Barcelona.
On Saturday night, the workers announced that they would lift all blockades, allowing normal operations to resume in all facilities as a gesture of goodwill.
Protesters emphasized that the protest was not against the prisoners, but against the Catalan government for leaving them unprotected.
Despite the temporary halt in demonstrations, they are expected to continue their protests next week.
Over 1,200 prisoners were kept in their cells in three Catalan prisons on Saturday as hundreds of prison staff blocked access to these facilities.
The Catalan government said it was particularly concerned about a hundred female inmates in Wad Ras who have remained in their cells since Thursday night.
Only essential services, such as food and medical care, were assured, with no visits, outings, or workshops permitted.
On Saturday morning, tension escalated when relatives arrived at the Quatre Camins prison to visit the inmates, especially since weekends are when families typically visit their loved ones.
Although the protesting workers allowed the relatives to enter the facilities, the visits were not guaranteed due to the lack of staff at the facility.
The director of Quatre Camins appeared to address the situation, but the protesters turned their backs on him and demanded his resignation.
The protesters are demanding the resignation of the director of Quatre Camins, claiming that he is implementing a protocol that endangers them, citing very serious assaults that have occurred at the prison, including one earlier in the same week.
Relatives visiting inmates confronted the director, claiming that it was illegal to deny them visits and threatening to take legal action.
The woman who was killed on Wednesday died from stab wounds caused by the prisoner, who also worked in the jail's kitchen.
Sources from the prison workers’ union told ACN that the prisoner had recently been removed from kitchen duty because of aggression but had been allowed to return.
Other sources told ACN that the inmate was an authoritarian and that he shouldn’t have been allowed back in the kitchen.
The inmate was serving an eleven-year sentence, due to end in April 2027, for stabbing a woman to death in 2016.
Catalan Justice Minister, Gemma Ubasart, went to Mas d'Enric prison on Thursday where a five-minute silence was observed in memory of the victim.
Prison unions decided not to attend a meeting called by the Catalan justice department on Friday at 2pm, because they believe that the minister, Gemma Ubasart, and the Secretary of Penal Measures, Amand Calderó, are no longer "valid interlocutors."
They will not meet with the government until Ubasart and Calderó resign or are dismissed, representatives told the Catalan News Agency (ACN). In addition, they said they will maintain the ongoing blockade of prisons until Ubasart and Calderó step down.
On Friday afternoon, the justice minister ruled out resigning from her position or sacking Calderó. Ubasart said that quitting "would certainly be the easiest decision, but not the most correct."
Justice department leaders and the prison services have the "responsibility and obligation" to manage the crisis, she said. The minister once again asked the unions to enter into dialogue to put an end to the "complicated" situation ongoing outside various prisons.
After three days of blockades of Catalan jails by workers
prisons resumed normal operations on Tuesday morning
according to sources from the Catalan Justice Department.
The protests broke out on Friday after a prison cook was killed by an inmate in Mas d’Enric prison on Wednesday
prison workers will gather in front of the office of the Presidency of the Catalan Government on Plaça Sant Jaume to pressure the Catalan Minister of Justice and the Secretary of penal measures
“We don’t want outstretched bloodstained hands,” said the prison workers’ spokespeople during a press conference on Tuesday
“The killing is the result of this administration’s politics,” said Sandra
a lawyer and criminologist at the Llendoners prison
Last week's tragic incident sparked protests across Catalan prisons as workers blocked the entrances to several Catalan prisons on Friday and Saturday
leaving thousands of inmates confined to their cells due to understaffing
prisoners were unable to leave their cells
or receive visits from their families and lawyers
Although protesters lifted the blockades on Saturday night and operations returned to normal on Sunday, workers launched a new wave of protests on Monday.
Over 1,200 prisoners were kept in their cells in three Catalan prisons on Saturday as hundreds of prison staff blocked access to these facilities.
The Catalan government said it was particularly concerned about a hundred female inmates in Wad Ras who remained in their cells for more than 24 hours.
On Wednesday, a woman who worked as a cook at the Mas d'Enric prison in the Tarragona region was fatally stabbed by an inmate, who later died by suicide.
Sources from the prison workers’ union told the Catalan News Agency (ACN) that the prisoner had recently been removed from kitchen duty because of aggression but had been allowed to return.
Other sources told ACN that the inmate was an authoritarian and that he shouldn’t have been allowed back in the kitchen.
The inmate was serving an eleven-year sentence, due to end in April 2027, for stabbing a woman to death in 2016.
Starting on June 25 and all throughout July
trucks will be not allowed on the AP-7 on Saturdays from 10 am to 2 pm and Sundays from 5 pm to 10 pm in an effort to reduce traffic congestion on the highway
as was announced by Catalan interior minister Joan Ignasi Elena on Tuesday
Trucks will only be able to drive in the right lane and at a maximum speed of 80 km/h on Fridays and days before a public holiday
Bumper-to-bumper traffic has become a fixture on the highway
when thousands upon thousands of vehicles leave and then return to the Barcelona area.
Additional lanes will also be opened at certain points over the same period
and tow trucks will be positioned in strategic areas in order to quickly remove vehicles that have been in accidents and prevent further traffic jams
Catalan authorities will also ask the Spanish government for permission to bring the speed limit down from 120 km/h to 110 km/h or even 100 km/h at certain points along the highway as more than half of all accidents are caused by not keeping safe separation distances between cars
There has been a 40% increase in traffic on the AP-7 since tolls were lifted almost a year ago
and while there are still somewhat fewer vehicles on the road now than in 2019
Elena acknowledged the highway was "at capacity."
Elena was also quick to blast the Spanish government, which he accused of "systematically failing" to invest in infrastructure in Catalonia, both in terms of roadwork and improving the Rodalies Renfe commuter train network.
"Public transport needs to be a real alternative to driving," he said.
The dog beach will be open from 10.30 am to 7.30 pm. It has adapted furniture with drinking facilities and a monitoring area to check that the animals have identification chips. Occupancy levels can be found on the beaches website
The beach will be open for guide dogs to make use of on three days this summer on 17 June
Beach outings for animals at the Barcelona Pet Shelter (CAACB) will continue this year on Wednesdays
with twenty dogs also getting time at the Can Jané swimming pool in La Roca del Vallès on 14 July
A model that has maintained its appeal during unprecedented times
the outlet market continues to thrive and it has a bright future ahead
RLI provides an overview of the sector before experts in the field offer their views on the industry
Due to their nature of being largely out of town and open-air
outlet centres and destinations have become more attractive shopping destinations for the general public during the last couple of years and this seems to be continuing as Covid-19 begins to dissipate in certain countries
According to the most recent Outlet Centre Performance Report (OCPRE) by ecostra GmbH in partnership with the French research institute Magdus
which is considered to be the ‘benchmark’ for the European outlet industry
the outlet operator Value Retail has achieved something truly unique by taking first
Gold went to “La Roca Village” in La Roca del Vallés
Silver went to “Kildare Village” in the north of Ireland and bronze to the previous serial winner “Bicester Village” in the British county of Oxfordshire
All three centres were developed and operated by Value Retail
“This is indeed a very special achievement
which should not be underestimated,” Dr Joachim Will
“It is well known in the market that Value Retail
charges by far the highest rents in the outlet sector
the brand manufacturers surveyed now confirm to us that their outlet stores also achieve the best returns there
it is worthwhile to operate shops in Value Retail centres despite the high rents.”
The report continues by saying that outlet stores continue to be significantly more profitable for brand manufacturers than their own brand stores in the cities high streets
the survey results of OCPRE have never shown a different picture over the past 14 years
the future for the outlet industry appears bright and while it has not been dampened by the pandemic
its next steps will be on more-assuredly stronger ground than that of traditional retail and over the next few pages industry experts offer us their thoughts on the outlet sector
The outlet sector continues to perform robustly through 2022 despite initial concerns around the Omicron variant
the wider political instability from Ukraine
general rises in inflation and of course petrol price rises
Whilst we are seeing signs of these sensitivities in the same way as all retail markets
the sector remains more attractive than full price retail for those shoppers seeking best value for money without compromising on shopper experience or brand choice
the outlet channel remains an ideal solution for brands and shoppers alike
Health and safety continues to be at the forefront of everyone’s minds in 2022
and therefore outlet centres – because their predominately open-air design – are in an increasingly good position to attract visitors for days out
We see the outlet industry being further boosted by the arrival of digitally-native brands – those which have traditionally never had an offline presence and are now using fashion outlets to test a bricks-and-mortar concept
They want to access and engage with a new type of customer in a physical way
and this industry is especially useful for them with the flexible leases we offer
A trend we see bigger than ever in 2022 is the omni-channel mindset
After various periods of confinement over the past two years
many consumers have become routinely familiar with online shopping
whilst simultaneously desiring ‘real’ in-person experiences
Not only do they now expect the best of both worlds
but they switch quickly and effortlessly between online and offline – which means brands and landlords need to join them in becoming channel agnostic
the pandemic has brought about new ways of shopping such as virtual personal shopping via WhatsApp and live-stream shopping
and the personalisation that these channels have offered will need to be translated into shopping in the physical world by utilising data in better and more meaningful ways
the S in ESG – Sustainability will grow further as a key differentiator to create an even more positive and regenerative approach to outlet shopping – not just when developing or redeveloping centres but as an integral part of any retail experience
We see an increased engagement with brand partners on sustainability issues will be needed
whether it be shop-fits or brand partners’ own responsible initiatives – as well as the implementation of the CRREM tool to set targets for the reduction of energy consumption and GHG emissions – all in line with what is required from the commercial real estate industry to limit the effects of climate change
Despite it being hard to gauge a clear outlook in the midst of international conflicts
ongoing supply-chain issues and diminished purchasing power caused by inflation
we remain optimistic about outlet sector performance
Last year we saw a general rebound in retail and shoppers coming back into stores across our outlet portfolio
drawn by the lure of the outlet proposition and our ability to respond quickly to changes
our outlet business recovered steadily over the course of 2021
and despite the significant challenges we face in 2022
we do not expect momentum in the sector to wane
rising prices mean that consumers are more value-conscious than ever and are now driven by both price
particularly on the back of an extended period of restrictions
The outlet business provides just what the consumer is looking for: an enticing combination of product
Outlet leasing terms and conditions are particularly relevant in the current retail climate and we expect our centres’ commercial offer to remain dynamic
creating an additional incentive for customers
Even as we see some firms becoming more cautious when it comes to their expansion plans
continue to open in dominant outlet centres and new brands are using the outlet channel to make their debut in bricks-and-mortar
we are also seeing a greater number of younger-focused brands opening across our portfolio
with some of our schemes increasingly targeting younger shoppers than they used to several years ago
Covid-19 exacerbated the need for easy access to products and services and up-to-the-minute information
and tech tools will therefore continue to play a defining role in the sector
with digital services and tools such as virtual shopping and loyalty programmes helping centres to adapt to ever more digitally savvy shoppers
While invisible smart tech solutions such as geolocation systems and tracking tools will continue to help analyse consumer behaviour and adapt aspects such as marketing
there will be plenty of opportunity for value creation in the outlet sector as schemes adapt to the evolving ESG scenario
keeping ahead of the new sustainability regulations and requirements
whilst also responding to consumer expectations for sustainable and socially conscious shopping experiences
Hopefully the situation in Ukraine will be resolved soon
but the effects of the conflict will be felt for years
Outlets have proven to be very resilient when it comes to the pandemic: domestic tourism has turned them into destinations where
thanks to the easy introduction of social distancing measures
But the situation in Ukraine and the growing spectre of inflation
A rise in the cost of fuel and raw materials as a result of the current conflict will have an impact on any future developments and
although increased inflation tends to have a positive impact
Sustainability is increasingly important for investors and brands
sustainable options are often not the cheapest so any increase in fuel
will see sustainable alternatives come under the spotlight even more
and brands should also remember that sustainability is becoming more and more important to consumers
so my advice to them would be that they resist the temptation to value engineer these options out of any future schemes
At Rioja Estates’ new Malmö Designer Village project
we are also developing one of the first ground source heat pump systems with solar panelling
as well as providing power direct to each unit
Attention needs to be given to operational costs too
we are looking at water efficient products across the scheme along with a wide range of sustainable facilities management initiatives such as EV fast charging points
My feeling is that going forward visits to outlets are going to become increasingly experiential and this will need to be reflected in every aspect of customer service including accessibility and public transport (especially with rising fuel costs in mind)
It is important to create excitement AND experiences for the consumer
potentially through higher prices and increased rental revenue as a result of greater sales density
Visitor numbers have been on the up and there is more and more product going into outlets
there is an increasing number of investors looking at outlets and more brands coming into the market
then I believe the future looks very bright for outlets
outlet centres have far outperformed the wider retail sector – and there is nothing to suggest this upward trajectory is set to falter any time soon
Even with inflation on the rise – coupled with the cost-of-living crisis – world-renowned flagship brands continue to signal a strong vote of confidence in the outlet model and
Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger have all significantly expanded their store footprints in recent months
This is evidence of the growing awareness among retailers that the shoppers who frequent outlets
spend more than they would at a full-price store to take advantage of the greater value
And while many outlet regulars will sadly see their disposable income ebb over the coming months
an increasingly frugal consumer base will also see an influx of shoppers who ordinarily shop at full-price stores turn to outlets
Our own continued success also suggests a growing preference by brands to take up space in outlet centres that are strategically located in urban centres
close to public transport connections and residential areas
Though travel is no longer restricted as it was during the pandemic
Covid-19 has almost certainly left a long-lasting impact on consumer behaviour
highlighting the obvious merits of there being a range of stores and other amenities on your doorstep
the virtues of localism are only set to gain further traction – with concepts like the 15-minute city we are pioneering at Wembley Park
negating the need to travel long distances to visit restaurants
The use of turnover-based rent structures by outlet destinations is appealing to retailers too
This shared risk inspires greater confidence in brands
which appreciate the fact that the landlord has as much of a vested interest in ensuring solid sales performance as they do
The driving force behind the continued success of the outlet sector will be three-pronged
Not only will it be spurred on by consumers honing in on better value for money
but also brands investing in their stores via upsizes and other enhancements
as well as the growing appeal of turnover-based rent structures to retailers themselves
A turbulent couple of years have meant that the retail industry has undergone multiple changes in a very short space of time
the outlet sector has shown incredible resilience during difficult times with its fresh approaches and innovative tenants
RLI takes a closer look at a selection of projects that highlight why the sector continues to be a beacon of hope for the wider market

The Ecostra/Magdus Factory Outlet Centre Performance Report is based on the results of the brands present in at least three European outlet centres
focusing on the performances of diverse locations
Some 85 names are thus taken into account in this ranking
the youth coach of Barcelona’s rising star Lamine Yamal
believes that Yamal is already a better player than Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe
and he confidently predicts that the forward will win the Ballon d’Or award within the next six years
Yamal’s journey at Barcelona began at the tender age of seven
which is the entry-level for young footballers
Yamal played for a club named CF La Torreta
balancing his time between school and junior football teams
he visited La Torreta in La Roca del Valles to participate in social events and despite his decade-long tenure at Barcelona
The club officials were deeply touched by his connection with the club and its young players
they presented him with a shirt and a shield from the club
Diaz, who is also the coordinator at CF La Torreta, shared his thoughts in an interview with SPORT
He expressed immense pride and joy about Yamal’s progress
it is a huge satisfaction to have Lamine here
“He has always been a very respectful and formal boy and he is still the same
he knows where he is and what he wants,” said Diaz
Díaz beamed with pride as he reflected on Yamal’s journey from a small club to becoming one of the brightest stars at Barcelona and in the national team
He possesses a unique blend of physical attributes reminiscent of both Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo
Achieving what he has at just 16 years old is extraordinary
“This current Barcelona team is different from previous years
When asked if Lamine Yamal is already at the level of Mbappe
the Frenchman has a lot of publicity because he will sign for Madrid
but the future goes through Lamine Yamal.”
Yamal’s story is not just about his impressive skills and potential but also about his humble beginnings and the support he received along the way
His commitment to his roots and the high praise from his former coach paint a picture of a young footballer destined for greatness
Lamine Yamal seems poised to make a significant impact on the world of football
The plague of the tick Hyalomma lusitanicum is worrying for its rapid expansion and already affects a good part of the metropolitan area of Barcelona
A pandemic… of ticks. The plague of Hyalomma lusitanicum has awakened alerts due to the speed with which it is spreading in Catalonia
Unknown until a few years ago in the territory
its growth has skyrocketed in recent times and could threaten to become a public health issue
This parasite feeds on the blood of its victim and
although its bite does not cause acute pain
it is worrying because it can transmit serious diseases such as Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever
tick-borne encephalitis or relapsing fever
The reasons for its expansion are, on the one hand, the favorable climatic conditions
whose populations are out of control in towns like Gavà or the whole Collserola mountain range
lusitanicum was limited to 31 municipalities
a recent study published in the Butlletí de la Institució Catalana d’Història Natural reveals that in December 2024
the tick had already been detected in 81 municipalities: 55 in the province of Barcelona (28 of them in its metropolitan area) and 26 in Tarragona
individuals of this species have been detected in the following municipalities of the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona: s: Badalona
Ticks usually hide in natural areas among tall bushes
it is recommended to avoid areas with abundant undergrowth during excursions
apply mosquito repellent and perform thorough body checks after outdoor activities
It is also advisable to keep an eye on pets such as dogs when we go for a walk with them in areas potentially infected by this tick
the Generalitat de Catalunya recommends to remove it quickly and go to a health professional to avoid complications
denies that ticks represent a public health problem at the moment for Catalonia
has explained that it is “rare” that ticks bite people and
that they transmit some disease and has invited the Catalans to continue walking in the mountains and carrying out activities in the forests

is that its interior also houses a restaurant with pool and embers that will turn your afternoon at La Roca in a round (and cool) plan
The menu has a very high level, with many grilled meat dishes josper’s
where there is also a swimming pool where you can swim while waiting for your dishes to arrive
If you also want to accompany your meal with a swim in the pool, you will have to pay an extra (15 euros for adults, 11 euros for children) to access the swimming pool of the club, a few meters from the restaurant and, in this way, happiness will be complete.
Sandwiches, daily menus at 9,20 or 7,20 and a paella menu for 15 euros. With that, plus the ticket to the pool complex if you are not a member, you have enough to spend the day eating, as they say, with your feet in the water.

View this post on Instagram Half an hour’s drive is enough to get to a restaurant complex with swimming pools where you can have a great time on Sundays. In Martorell, the Aqqua restaurant is part of the municipal swimming pools of Martorell, with a terrace right in front of the water.
At lunch, again, daily and weekend menus with Catalan and Mediterranean cuisine to spend a great weekend eating and bathing.

The two decks of the Wela Hotel give you the opportunity to take a dip and have a bite to eat while feeling, for a moment, like the wealthy tourists who overlook the city from this hotel built over the sea, and not, as usual, like the locals who look down on them from below.
Of course, you will have to pay for it. The ticket costs about 50 euros (food apart), which includes access, sun lounger, towel and a drink and, of course, great views over the Barcelona coastline.
