Might light bulbs be the rare topic on which New Yorkers and Trump agree
Maybe when it comes to the Brooklyn Bridge
which recently emerged from a multiyear effort to modernize its lighting
(The city is calling it a “glow-up.”) The result
as some unhappy neighbors and bridge-crossers will tell you: a blindingly bright bridge
The warm brown of John Roebling’s sooty limestone-and-granite blocks is now a millennial gray
“It’s like my 19th century Brooklyn Bridge is under interrogation by a belligerent cop,” one local posted on Instagram
Strolling across the modified bridge just after dark recently
a Queens resident named Joe Pilato didn’t have strong opinions about the new lighting
when the necklace of lights dotting its swooping cables—mercury-vapor bulbs—was replaced with L.E.D.s
The city’s Department of Transportation then decided to auction off the old lighting fixtures to the public
“I was regularly on a number of government-surplus websites
and on one of them I saw this post come up advertising lights from the Brooklyn Bridge,” he said
he has a scruffy beard and nearly shoulder-length hair
and he is the founder of the subreddit r/Flipping
he has spent more than a decade flipping items that people are looking to offload
he spends lots of time scoping out estate sales and auction houses
as well as Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace
he flipped some nineteenth-century harpoons that he’d found online
am I going to catch bubonic plague or something?’ ”
Pilato passed a girl filming a TikTok dance
he’d bid around thirty-five dollars each on a hundred and fifty of the hundred and seventy-six available lamps
Pilato rented a moving truck to collect his haul at a D.O.T
Each fixture looks like a big gray Lego block
with a round socket holding a bulb the size of an ostrich egg encased in a thick glass globe
I was trying to get more information from the guy there about the lights
but he was very eager to show me the new L.E.D
‘They’re more efficient.’ He was pretty pumped about it.”
Pilato stowed the lights in a storage facility in Sunnyside
plugging them into a power inverter connected to his Honda Civic
but I was wearing safety equipment and covering my balls,” he said
Pilato said that it took him more than a year to sell all the lights
He marketed them to history buffs and to New York-themed businesses
Once he stood at the entrance to the bridge’s pedestrian walkway for three hours
holding a sign reading “Bridge Lights for Sale.” That effort yielded nothing
but he did sell a lamp to an expatriate couple in Paris
and seventeen to the owner of a billiards parlor
One negotiation with a Long Island City bowling alley ended with him throwing in an extra light in exchange for two lanes on a Saturday night
he made between twelve and thirteen thousand dollars
Pilato dodged a cyclist and looked up to take in the new illumination
floodlights to the bases of the bridge’s two towers
making the effect even harsher and brighter
“I don’t think that the people in charge of the D.O.T
Is this going to make people miss the way the old bridge looked?’ ” he said
“The white lights are certainly more clinical,” he went on
‘Bleh!’ They were warmer and cozier before.” ♦

Days before his return to the White House, Donald Trump's real estate company secured approval to develop four condominium towers outside Miami

The Doral City Council voted unanimously Wednesday night to approve The Trump Organization's plan to develop 1,498 units across four 20-story towers

The project will be called the Trump Doral International Towers. When the project was proposed in 2022, and when it was given preliminary approval in August
it was simply billed as Doral International Towers
“It always has and will be a Trump product,” Felix Lasarte
the attorney representing Trump in the project and the founder of The Lasarte Law Firm
Not only will this be the first active development by a sitting U.S
but this will be The Trump Organization's first self-developed investment in South Florida since 2012
The vote clears the way for Trump to build the residential and commercial complex at 4400 NW 87th Ave. around the existing hotel at the Trump National Doral Golf Club, which Trump purchased for $150M in 2012
The project will also include a 3-acre park with a plaza and water feature and more than 3,000 parking spaces
Each tower in the 5M SF project is planned to include ground-floor commercial space

The project was first introduced in August 2022 with a plan to build 2,209 units. The proposal was trimmed this past summer when the city gave its first approval to rezone the property in a 3-to-2 vote
council members said they were initially concerned about the density of the project and its potential impact on Doral’s quality of life

Lasarte said during the hearing that he has been working on the proposal for more than four years and was grateful that the development can now move forward with sales
“It actually took Trump less time to become president again than it did for me to get this thing approved,” Lasarte said

President-elect Donald Trump’s plan to build a 1,500-unit condominium complex in Miami-Dade County could move forward next week after residents have their say
The Doral City Council is set to hold a public hearing Jan. 15 on a resolution approving a site plan and master development plan for the project
which would rise at the Trump National Doral Miami golf resort
The panel will also decide, after public input, whether to approve rezoning of the 56.4-acre property at 4400 NW 87th Ave. Doral Council members gave a preliminary OK to the rezoning in August
whose principal is listed Donald Trump Jr.
seeks to construct 1,498 condo units across four 20-floor towers estimated to collectively house 4,975 residents
which would surround the existing Trump National Doral resort
There would be 1,478 condos ranging from one-bedroom units of 885-square-feet to 5,000-square-foot units with four bedrooms
The project would also include 20 three- to four-bedroom villas
would also boast 141,694 square feet of commercial space
3,522 parking spots and close to 37 acres of open park and recreational space
If approved and developed, the project would mark the first condo sales endeavor in South Florida by a sitting President. Pascual Perez Kiliddjian Starr Architects & Planners designed the project
Lasarte said the project will produce the tallest building in Doral. But unlike the Miami Freedom Park and Soccer Village project rising on the former Melreese golf course in Miami
Miami-Dade officials have not expressed concerns about the Trump development’s potential interference with nearby Miami International Airport
Lasarte said the Federal Aviation Administration similarly doesn’t have an issue with the project
A memo from Doral Interim City Manager Francisco Rios recommending approval of the plans said the project will further a “Revenue Growth” goal the city detailed in its 2023 Strategic Plan
will lead to “increasing the property value
thereby adding new revenues to the city’s property tax base and fees.”
A final vote on the project is expected to take place in September

Company NewsTrump Pitches $3 Billion in Condos at Miami-Area Golf CourseBy Anna J Kaiser and Felipe MarquesUpdated: August 15, 2024 at 9:22AM EDT
(Bloomberg) -- Donald Trump wants to sell more high-end condos in the US, this time using a famously difficult Florida golf course as a draw.
The former president’s family business is seeking to build residences and retail inside the Trump National Doral Miami resort, according to documents posted on a City of Doral website. The property covers more than 600 acres and currently features a hotel and four golf courses, including the Blue Monster, which is notorious among golfers for its numerous water hazards.
Construction of the new “Trump-branded project” is expected to cost between $2.5 billion and $3 billion, according to Felix Lasarte, a Miami-based attorney who is representing the Trump company developing it.
The Doral project will “be incredible for home values and great for the community all around,” said Eric Trump, who leads the Trump Organization alongside his brother, Donald Trump Jr. “It’s going to be a world class development.”
The proposal would encompass building 1,498 residential units and 141,694 square feet of commercial development in one of the hottest real estate markets in the country. Lasarte said in an interview that the plan includes five towers, each about 20 stories high, as well as townhouses.
Prices for the condos would start at $2 million, with sales expected to kick off next year, depending on permitting, he said.
“If you go to Doral, it’s a nice suburban community, then when you go inside that country club, the people that visit it are very wealthy people,” Lasarte said. “I think this is going to be an opportunity to capitalize on that.”
On Wednesday, the Doral City Commission voted 3-2 to grant initial approval for a zoning change that would allow the planned condos and retail to be built on a portion of the property. The city’s mayor was among the officials voting against the proposal.
The zoning change still needs to be cleared in a final vote in September.
Building the condos might require tearing down a part of the hotel on the property, Lasarte said on the sidelines of the Wednesday meeting.
The condo plan could prop up the value of a property that has been one of the biggest revenue generators for the Trump Organization.
Even if Trump fails to ultimately build anything else on the Doral property, the changes in zoning, as well as a recent multimillion-dollar tax easement on the Blue Monster golf course, could make it more valuable on paper.
Trump, 78, saw a massive increase in his wealth earlier this year thanks to a boost from his social media startup. While some of the euphoria around Trump Media & Technology Group Corp. faded, it still provides a significant addition on paper to the Republican presidential nominee’s roughly $5.3 billion net worth.
Trump’s real estate portfolio is valued at $2.7 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Trump National Doral accounts for $305 million of that, with $125 million in associated debt (Trump refinanced the property with a loan from San Diego-based Axos Financial Inc.
Still, a hot local market and potential development opportunities could make that a low estimate. The Trump Organization said it received a bid of $1.5 billion for the property last year, contingent on zoning approvals that would allow residential development.
Trump had announced plans to build 2,300 luxury homes in Doral in January 2022, but ended up scaling back those ambitions.
In the meantime, Trump made another deal with the city of Doral, gaining a conservation-easement tax break in exchange for promising not to build atop the Blue Monster. The pact calls the course an important tourist attraction — as well as a habitat for threatened birds including the little blue heron and the wood stork.
The easement shrank the property’s fair market value to $345 million from $668 million, producing a potential $323 million tax deduction, according to an IRS form that made public record as part of the 2022 agreement. The size of the potential deduction was first reported by The Wall Street Journal.
Lasarte, the lawyer, said that the Trump Organization plans to pursue similar conservation easements on the property’s other golf courses.
While much of Trump’s reputation as a TV star and developer stems from his time in New York, his businesses are increasingly focused elsewhere.
His social-media company is based in Sarasota, on Florida’s Gulf Coast. He and most of his extended family have moved to South Florida since he left the White House in 2021. And Trump is planning to build new offices in Jupiter, at his golf club there, The Palm Beach Post reported this year.
The Trump Organization has also been pursuing deals in the Middle East, including a luxury tower in Dubai and two other projects announced this year.

we made a change in our advocacy efforts to be what we call foreskin-positive,” he said the other day

Losquadro, who is fifty-nine and has a short black ponytail, had driven from Glen Head, Long Island, in his “mobile education unit,” a converted flatbed truck displaying a billboard-size photo of a half-dressed couple in a compromising position. The caption: “Foreskin . . . A girl can hope.”
“Everyone talks about the Second Amendment, the right to keep and bear arms, but when it comes to babies’ genitals, they have no rights,” Losquadro said. “And, you know, what’s wrong with the foreskin? The foreskin never killed anybody. A foreskin just wants to give love, connection, and happiness.”
Losquadro’s day job is in real-estate management, and he runs Intaction from a small studio in his office where he records YouTube videos with titles such as “What’s Causing Young Men to Fall Behind?” and “Can We Have Bigger Penises in America?” It’s also where he updates Intaction’s Web site with research, press clippings, and interactive features, including a survey asking visitors to vote for their favorite uncircumcised celebrity (among the options: Leonardo DiCaprio and Orlando Bloom).
As part of his advocacy, Losquadro lobbies state representatives to end Medicaid coverage of circumcisions, arguing that it creates an incentive for a medically unnecessary procedure. Last month, he visited Concord, New Hampshire, where the state legislature will vote on the issue later this year. Because his cause attracts supporters on both sides of the aisle, he tries to remain nonpartisan.
Intaction is not Losquadro’s only foreskin-related side gig. He is also the inventor of Alpha Armor, a moisturizing penis-health cream for circumcised men who suffer from dry skin, available on Amazon for $37.75 a tub. An advertisement for the product on the side of Losquadro’s truck reads “Now cut men can get that silky European feel.”

This ethos is what snagged Adams’s attention
including an invasive surgery when he was five
initially consulting pediatric urology texts
until finally he found a community of like-minded anti-circumcision advocates
“I would say most of us who are Intactivists are sensitive people,” Adams explained
“We really feel that it’s wrong to alter children without their consent.”
who had on a T-shirt that read “Foreskin is Fun-Skin,” chimed in to explain the relationship between a foreskin and a satisfying sex life
“There’s so much talk about female dryness in the U.S.,” he said
“But it’s not only women who are supposed to have lubrication.”
A group of high-school girls approached the men
they explained that they saw the truck’s billboard from down the street
Grant handed them some pamphlets and suggested that they check out the interactive demo mounted on the back of the truck
He walked them over to a glass box encasing an anatomically correct baby doll in the midst of a circumcision procedure

and two animatronic latex-glove-covered hands wielding bloody instruments came to life

The Trump Organization's plan to add 1,498 condos around the Trump National Doral golf course cleared an early hurdle Wednesday night
The Doral City Council in a 3-2 vote passed the first reading of a proposal that would change the zoning on the southeastern portion of the golf club and resort
The change would allow four towers and a fifth smaller building to be built around the perimeter of the existing clubhouse and hotel
“What Doral has is a very unique situation
You have four golf courses next to each other,” Felix Lasarte
“We believe there’s going to be a lot of international
national and local buyers that like the Trump brand and want to be part of the golfing experience that they can have there.”
The project is expected to cost roughly $3B, Bloomberg reported
The development firm of the former president and Republican nominee in the November election proposed the project through a Delaware LLC called Trump Endeavor 12
Condos at the towers, slated to be named Doral International Towers, would start at $2M and be prohibited from being used as short-term rentals
The residential portion would sit atop 142K SF of retail space targeted toward luxury shops and upscale dining
The project would likely be built in phases, with The Trump Organization aiming to launch sales in the spring or summer of 2025, Lasarte told the South Florida Business Journal
He didn't respond to a request for comment from Bisnow
Renderings of the project presented Wednesday show 20-story buildings flanking the corner of Northwest 87th Avenue and Northwest 36th Street
with what was described at the meeting as a 3-acre park with a plaza and water feature anchoring the project
Much of the proposed development site is surface parking
and a new parking garage would serve as the pedestal for the central and largest tower
Lasarte said at the meeting that the total unit count would likely be below the proposed number because the plan is for some buyers to combine multiple units into a single condo
Trump National Doral already hosts a 470-key hotel and four golf courses, including the Blue Monster, which has hosted PGA Tour and LIV Golf competitions. Trump purchased the nearly 800-acre development for $150M in 2012
Lasarte said he expected buyers would be seasonal users and second-home buyers
telling the city council that traffic wouldn't be an issue because the condos would only be occupied 20% of the time and the proposal included $4M in road upgrades
Two Doral residents spoke out against the proposal at the meeting
while city staff recommended that the resolution be approved
council members voted without asking any questions or further discussion
Vice Mayor Oscar Puig-Corve and Councilwomen Maureen Porras and Digna Cabral voted in favor of the resolution
Mayor Christi Fraga and Councilman Rafael Pineyro voted against
Fraga told Bisnow in a statement that her opposition to the resolution was because of concerns about traffic and fears that it could create a glut of condos on the market
“A top issue concerning Doral residents is traffic congestion and overdevelopment
"I value and appreciate President Trump's business investment and presence in our city
but my duty above all is to Doral's residents.”
Puig-Corve said in a phone interview Thursday that the project is a natural continuation of the densification of that eastern side of town, which includes the ongoing transformation of the city’s downtown spearheaded by Codina Partners
“We want the high density on that side of town
not on the residential side where the single-family homes are,” Puig-Corve said
“We already have high density on that side
The Trump Organization and Pineyro didn’t respond to requests for comment
Fraga, elected as the city's first female mayor in 2022, and Pineyro are both running unopposed for reelection in November
“I decided to be a resident and not an elected official,” Puig-Corve said of his vote in favor
“My decision is based on what I truly feel is good for Doral.”
A second and final reading of the resolution will likely be on the next council agenda
but the project will have to come before the council at least once more for site plan approval
With one of the proposal's supporters leaving the council
the winner of Puig-Corve's seat could become the deciding vote on whether the project advances
The plan pitched by The Trump Organization Wednesday night is an updated version of a 2,209-unit proposal from August 2022
The two proposals call for the same number of buildings
but the latest plan increases the commercial space in exchange for fewer condos
Trump’s development firm has also filed plans to build a three-story office building on a surface parking lot at Trump International Golf Club Jupiter
The 45K SF building is proposed as the new office for all of Trump’s Florida club operations
but it would be large enough to host other Trump businesses

a twenty-one-year-old from the Henan Province of central China
had never seen a gun before he moved to the United States—not even one attached to a police officer
When he was leaving home to attend Bates College
his grandmother warned him not to go out on weekends; she had been reading about the increase in mass shootings in the U.S
and that Chinese state media was exaggerating the gun-violence problem to make America look bad
the worst mass shooting in Maine’s history—and the deadliest in the United States this year—occurred in Lewiston
when a gunman opened fire at a local bowling alley
killing eighteen people and injuring thirteen more
The shootings were just a couple of miles away from the Bates campus
along with the rest of Androscoggin County
and a manhunt—involving local and state police
county residents and Bates students are still sheltering in place
was at a campus political forum when the lockdown orders came in
He told me about his experience as an international student encountering a uniquely American phenomenon—a mass-shooter alert
I was curious: Why was he outside the building when there’s supposed to be an event happening in the basement
That’s when I was told that the meeting was cancelled
I was planning to walk back to my dorm because I hadn’t heard of any casualties
But I was stopped by some other students who told me that there had been casualties and that there was an order to stay inside
I stayed in the basement from eight until ten-forty-five
We were projecting CNN on the wall—all of us were just sitting there and staring into the projector
And then I walked back to my dorm with a couple of students who also live there
We decided that it was too late and we needed somewhere we could sleep
students were sleeping on the floor already
because I was literally thinking in my brain
It’s something I never thought I would even think about
There is a main thoroughfare we have to cross to get to my residential hall
and—because it’s a wide-open road with very few trees and very little cover—when I was walking across the crosswalk
and I had to run to stay out of open areas
we got an e-mail from the school about food on campus
Because all of the employees were told not to return to campus
So they told us that we should go to dining halls during designated periods of time—you have twenty minutes to eat your lunch and then five minutes to walk back
I just made ramen because I didn’t want to go outside
“I’m not from Beijing or Shanghai like most other Chinese students
because I went to an international high school
and the Chinese education system was not a good fit for me
I came here because the education system is more liberating
I was preparing to walk outside the academic building
when American students stopped me and told me to stay indoors
I realized how inadequately I’m educated and trained when it comes to this type of situation
When I saw how my American peers reacted and how I reacted
“After deciding to go to college in the U.S.
‘Why are you risking your life going to this country?’ The U.S
is rendered in the Chinese media as this crazy place with mass shootings every day
and little to no government control and intervention
that’s just a stereotype and a misconception
Stop worrying about me going to a country that seems unsafe because
AcademyAlberto Lasarte: 'It's a shame that one of the two teams is going to be left without promotion'Both UD Almería 'B' head coach Alberto Lasarte and CD Toledo head coach Rubén Gala used the same words in the post-match press conference: 'Today we saw a game that is not from Tercera RFEF'
UD Almería 'B' head coach Alberto Lasarte shared his post-game thoughts at the press conference after the match against CD Toledo
he regretted the 'early opener conceded' since
as he later added: ' I told my players to be attacking-wise in the first play and for the first ten minutes
we were going all out and it annoys me because they cross in and we let them.'
we had 20 minutes in which we put them on the ropes
Having control we have sometimes over-exerted ourselves and on two counter-attacks
the gaffer assured that they were 'bittersweet
as a coach I wanted to get the best result.' Although he stated: 'There is no other option than to boost our morale and be one hundred percent
'They're a very powerful team and it'll be very sad if one of us is left without promotion after the work we have done,' he added
What is obvious is that the UDA Academy prospects are facing a very tough and very confident rivals
the whole script changes with the first goal
it would've been a CD Toledo that would've looked more for the opponents' goal
but those opening minutes have knocked us out
quite complete and today should be a wake-up call for next week.,'
the Jaen-borm coach assessed what the second leg in Toledo will be like and commented the following: 'I expect a very nice match at the Salto del Caballo
whoever manages to take advantage of their good spell of possession will win
There will be options for both of us and whoever takes advantage of it will be promoted.'
I have tried to sample some of the world’s most highly-rated restaurants while on holiday overseas
I had an opportunity to try both of the three-star Michelin restaurants in Barcelona
How could this not be an epic dining experience
was that all three-star Michelin restaurants are by no means equal
and while you can count on three stars commanding a high price
they are not the guarantee of memorable dining
If it’s simply a great meal you are looking for
you might well be better off visiting a restaurant with one or two fewer stars
That’s because dining at a three-star Michelin restaurant is not just about masterfully done food
you can pretty much count on incredible combinations of flavors
but what renders the dining experience at a three-star restaurant magical – what turns the dishes into edible art – is clever presentation and fantastic service
The first of my dining outings in Spain was to ABaC
an attractive restaurant set within a boutique hotel in the chic Sarria-sant Gervasi area on the outskirts of Barcelona
ABaC first came to foodies’ attention in 2004 when chef Jordi Cruz earned his first Michelin star at the age of 24
he became the first Catalan chef awarded a third star by the Michelin inspectors
But ABaC was not the first Barcelona restaurant to gain three stars
the Catalan outpost of renowned Basque chef Martin Berasategui
Lasarte was awarded a third Michelin star in 2017
joining Berasategui’s eponymous flagship restaurant in his native Basque country
which has held a three-star rating since 2001
we were escorted to a lovely outside seating area for a drink
and then led into the kitchen for a tour and appetizers
That’s where things got off to a rocky start
While the first appetizers were indeed interesting
it was hard to appreciate the creativity while juggling them standing in the kitchen
The process felt way too rushed – as though the restaurant was in a hurry to get others inside
We then were ushered into one of the very attractive dining rooms
where over the next 4 hours we sampled 13 dishes and 7 wines
but when I asked my husband a couple of days ago which of the courses he remembered
the only one that came immediately to mind was the first: ABaC’s Bloody Mary on the rocks – a pale drink from which the blood red of the tomato had been drip filtered out of both the drink and the frozen cube
You would never have guessed it would taste like a great Bloody Mary
But despite some innovative dishes and very creative plating
I cannot say that I left ABaC widely impressed – and the biggest problem was the presentation and table service by a very young staff that clearly needs more training
Our experience was very much the opposite at Lasarte
Arriving with a friend we had unexpectedly encountered in Barcelona (our reservation for two had been made weeks before)
the veteran staff warmly welcomed this unaccustomed surprise and quickly rearranged a table for the three of us
the next three hours exceeded expectations – the service
Not only were the wines paired with the Lasarte tasting menu a very good match
but our glasses remarkably were refilled until each succeeding wine was served
The finely choreographed service – one person described it later as like a “ballet” – may have been the best we’ve encountered in a restaurant anywhere
Both restaurants were expensive – about $300 a person for the tasting menu combined with the wine pairing
So what to make of our Barcelona dining experience
Had we just been picking one three-star restaurant for our visit
we probably would have chosen ABaC – and would have left mildly disappointed
we still would talking about it (which we are anyway)
The bottom line is that three Michelin stars provides no guarantee that you are going to leave thinking your money was well spent
It’s worth trying to find out more about a restaurant than its number of stars – perhaps by reading the reviews of some experienced diners – before investing in what is certain to be a pricey visit

Barcelona
Martín Berasategui’s embassy at the Monument hotel has become one of the essential restaurants not only in the city but in all of Catalonia and Spain
where people flock to marvel at the chef's creativity
The sampling menu is a treat that everyone should have the chance to enjoy
Such excellence has earned the Lasarte the top prize in the restaurant world
and as of November 2016 the restaurant is the first in Barcelona to boast three Michelin stars
the man responsible for the day-to-day operations is Italian chef Paolo Casagrande
Casagrande adds his own stamp of high elegance and creativity
which you can see in dishes such as apple millefeuille
and where the surprising aesthetic never surpasses the combination of amazing flavours

The Catalan capital has for the first time a restaurant awarded with three Michelin stars
one of the highest recognitions in the gastronomic world
‘Lasarte’ joins the select group of those restaurants which have three ‘macarons’ in Catalonia
“Gastronomy allows us to deliver happiness”
stated renowned Basque chef Martín Berasategui
who taught 'Lasarte' chef, Paolo Casagrande
five new restaurants in Catalonia were awarded their first Michelin ‘star’
whereas the number of those outlets which hold two ‘macarons’ in Catalonia remains the same
with this Wednesday night’s new recognitions
there are now 67 restaurants that have been awarded with Michelin stars in Catalonia
Catalonia had 50 restaurants which accounted for 60 Michelin stars; now this list has been enhanced with 7 new awards
the presentation of the Spain and Portugal Michelin Guide 2017 took place for the first time in Girona
the same city which has seen the birth and rise of ‘El Celler de Can Roca’
which was named best restaurant in the world in 2013 and 2015
one of the most important events on the world’s gastronomic calendar
30 new prizes were awarded: 22 restaurants were awarded their first Michelin star
7 were given their second star and only one restaurant obtained the highest recognition: ‘Lasarte’ obtained its third ‘macaron’.
‘Lasarte’ achieves its third Michelin star
‘Lasarte’ is the only establishment throughout Spain and Portugal that joins the three 'macarons' select group
it also becomes the third Catalan restaurant to achieve three ‘stars’
along with ‘El Celler de Can Roca’ in Girona and ‘Sant Pau’ by Carme Ruscalleda in Sant Pol de Mar
Martín Berasategui is the first chef to have two restaurants on the three-Michelin-stars podium: the restaurant that bears his name in Lasarte-Oria (Guipúscoa)
the Basque chef also has two stars for his restaurant ‘MB’ in Tenerife and
“There is new blood in the Berasategui brand and they make myself great”
The Michelin Gala also brought joy to six Catalan chefs
who despite having invested only 18 months in his new restaurant ‘Céleri’ (Barcelona) has already achieved his first star
“We are very happy because they have recognised our commitment to vegetables”
of the ‘L’Antic Molí’ in Ulldecona (southern Catalonia)
was also very pleased because he adds a 'macaró’ to the award for ‘Best Chef of the Year’ he already won at the last Gastronomic Forum
“It's an award that recognises the good work and the products of the lands of the Ebro
Five new restaurants in Catalonia awarded their first Michelin ‘star’
The Michelin Guide 2017 expands the constellation of Catalan restaurants who get a star for the first time: ‘Céleri’ and ‘Xerta’ in Barcelona
‘Ca l'Arpa’ in Banyoles (which returns to the list)
‘Boscana de Bellvís’ (Pla d’Urgell) and ‘L’Antic Molí d’Ulldecona’ (Montsià
Catalan cuisine goes beyond Catalonia’s borders and the chef Sergi Arola also gets a 'Macaró' with his new restaurant ‘LAB’ in Sintra (Portugal)
Arola closed last September the restaurant that bore his name in Madrid and had two Michelin stars
Catalonia does not add any new members to the group of restaurants with two Michelin ‘stars’
but maintains its establishments with this recognition (with the exception of ‘Lasarte’
This is the case for ‘Restaurant Miramar’ in Llançà (Alt Empordà)
‘Les Cols’ in Olot (a small town 100 kilometres north of Barcelona) and the Barcelona restaurants ‘ABaC’
Catalan cuisine has added in this edition of the Guide seven new recognitions
The Michelin Guide 2017 distinguishes 203 restaurants

SANTIAGO -- Martin Lasarte has left his position as Chile manager following the team's failure to qualify for this year's World Cup
the Chilean Football Association said on Friday
The 61-year-old Uruguayan guided Chile to seven wins
six draws and nine losses after replacing Reinaldo Rueda in February last year
"We've reached a consensus that Martin Lasarte's contract will not be renewed," Chile national team director Francis Cagigao told a news conference
Martin is a gentleman and a consummate professional in the world of football
We have nothing but gratitude for his work
but above that is the person and the professionalism
And here we are talking about an impeccable professional."
Lasarte's departure came less than three days after Chile ended their qualifying campaign with a 2-0 home defeat to Uruguay
a result that left the Roja seventh in the 10-team South American group
Cagigao did not say when a new manager would be appointed but ruled out the possibility of an interim coach
"I think that would be a mistake," Cagigao said
"We need a replacement to oversee a renewal of the team and losing eight or nine months of that process doesn't seem like a good idea to me."
Uruguay and Ecuador secured South America's four automatic World Cup berths while Peru will play either Australia or the United Arab Emirates in a playoff
The World Cup will be played in Qatar from Nov 21 to Dec 18

MacArthur ’20 poses—or tries to pose—for a portrait
MacArthur ran for a seat on the Cambridge School Committee in the November 7 municipal election
“My personal well-being might not necessarily be maximized by being on the School Committee as compared to being in college
he worries that the re-election of every incumbent who ran means that the school committee is unlikely to see meaningful change
MacArthur was one of two sophomores who ran in Cambridge’s recent municipal election; Nadya T
Okamoto ’20 ran for a seat on Cambridge’s City Council
Yet Okamoto says she found solace in the election’s large voter turnout
she scrolls through a series of maps displaying the increase in voter turnout in Precinct 2
which is almost entirely occupied by MIT students
increased by 252.8 percent since 2015—the largest increase of any Cambridge precinct
“That was what I was celebrating today,” Okamoto says
running for City Council hasn’t always been Okamoto’s goal
She only became involved in Cambridge politics six months before she began her campaign
and says she quickly grew passionate about local issues
“This seems to be the only way that people are going to listen to what I have to say,” she says
“She was heavily criticized from the get-go—and we knew this—for not being from Cambridge,” Okamoto’s campaign director Claira P
“I really wanted people to see that there’s something really strong about telling people that they can run for office regardless of circumstance.”
MacArthur’s campaign faced the same challenge: His press director and former Cambridge Rindge and Latin School classmate Diego L
describes aspects of the campaign process as a “quest to justify your Cambridge chops.”
“People are very defensive when it comes to outsiders coming into their city,” Lasarte says
Lasarte made a point to always mention MacArthur’s status as a lifelong Cantabrigian and a graduate of CRLS before saying that he was a Harvard student
But MacArthur’s deep roots in Cambridge didn’t make campaigning any easier for him
He remembers holding signs and meeting Cambridge residents in Porter Square several weeks prior to the election
When he introduced himself and said “I’m running for school committee” to a passerby
he was met with a brisk “I don’t care.” This was a common response
“That sums up so much about how people engage with school committee politics.”
While MacArthur doesn’t plan to run in future local elections
he intends to stay involved in Cambridge politics
“I’m perfectly happy continuing to make a difference in Cambridge outside of elected office
“I’ve got my Participatory Budgeting shirt
which reads “PB Cambridge,” refers to the $800,000 in the city budget that is allocated by popular vote
The vote is open to all Cambridge residents who are at least 12 years old
“I’ve already started emailing a lot of the people who were elected and community leaders I met to be like
What do you think is the best way I can channel my efforts?’” she says

(ANS – Lwena) – On Sunday, 3 September 2023, the Catholic population of Lwena participated en masse in the episcopal ordination of Bishop Martin Lasarte, SDB, appointed on 1 July by Pope Francis as the fifth bishop of that diocese. The consecration of the new bishop filled the locals with joy and enthusiasm and the event was defined as "a time of great hope for the Province of Moxico", of which Lwena is the capital.
The rite, carried out in the gymnastics sports pavilion in Lwena, was attended by 17 bishops, 80 concelebrating priests, 500 members of the choir and over 5,000 faithful, including numerous governmental, civil, religious and traditional authorities.
The Mass was presided over by Archbishop José Manuel Imbamba, President of the Episcopal Conference of Angola and São Tomé (CEAST) and Archbishop of Saurimo – diocese of which Lwena is a suffragan; and among the numerous concelebrants, the Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Giovanni Gaspari, and Salesian Bishop Gaston Ruvezi, Bishop of Lubumbashi, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
During the homily that preceded the rite of consecration, Archbishop Imbamba began by speaking of the great celebration that the diocese is experiencing: "This moment is an opportunity for us to pay a simple and heartfelt tribute to all the bishops who have had the honour and mission of guiding the fortunes of this diocese."
After the homily, the solemn rite of episcopal ordination took place, accompanied first by the prayerful silence of the thousands of faithful, then by the singing and jubilant acclamations of all those present once Martín Lasarte, a Salesian originally from Uruguay, with already over 30 years of missionary service in Angola, was consecrated and presented to the people as the new Bishop of the diocese of Lwena, with his episcopal insignia: pectoral cross, ring, mitre and pastoral.
but just how big is the inequality gap and how can it be bridged
British charity Oxfam attempted to answer that question in an update to their annual inequality report
the annual gathering of some of the wealthiest and most powerful people in the world
Oxfam’s report calculates that “the richest 1% have bagged nearly twice as much wealth as the rest of the world put together over the past two years.”
the Oxfam report calls for increased taxes on personal income as well as capital gains
contending that an annual tax of up to 5% on the world’s multimillionaires could raise $1.7 trillion
enough to lift 2 billion people out of poverty and start a fund to end global hunger
$1 trillion: How much money a one-off tax on unrealized capital gains of just the 100 richest Americans could create
The Oxfam report points out that $1 trillion is more than five times the total official world development assistance in 2021
more than 1.7 billion workers worldwide saw inflation outpace their wages in 2022
This means that despite their wages going up
those workers can afford less than they could a year ago
This indicates the richest 1% are profiting from the rising cost of food and energy
creating wealth at record rates even amid a downturn in the economy
Oxfam’s report suggests that the gap between the ultra rich and the rest of the world will only continue to grow unless action is taken to reform tax codes
