Corrigendum: En Nuestra Casa No Hay Chinchorros: A Youth-Oriented
Participatory Approach to Chagas Prevention in Guara
Chagas disease is a neglected tropical disease that disproportionately affects impoverished rural communities
Insecticide-based approaches are inconsistently performed and exorbitantly priced for the communities affected
The present study considers an alternative approach to primary prevention of Chagas disease using entertainment education
As part of an ongoing effort in rural Ecuador
we worked with the children of the community of Guara
and academicians to co-develop a song to promote behaviors related to preventing Chagas
we demonstrate opportunities for meaningful intervention in rural communities
as well as challenges to implementing an entertainment education approach when working with national stakeholders
we discuss one communication intervention that attempts to promote primary prevention of Chagas disease
working with children in the community of Guara
we co-created a song that raises knowledge of easily implemented home-based practices that can prevent infestation by triatomine bugs and
reduce exposure to the vectors for Chagas disease
We begin with a discussion of our approach
an approach based in principles of Entertainment-Education with an emphasis on the song tradition
We then discuss the creation of the song to promote behavioral changes regarding Chagas and provide an analysis of this song and its messages
we offer some implications that this co-participatory process has for implementing Entertainment-Education strategies in the context of neglected tropical diseases
Some of these programs are purposely designed by change agencies; other programs that were produced just for entertainment have had unintended positive effects on audiences' thoughts and behaviors
The success of these programs has inspired governments and non-profit organizations to purposefully design entertainment-education projects
a leading theorist of performance studies states:
the story cuts across” also points to transgressive travel between two different domains of knowledge: one official
and abstract- “the map”; the other one practical
and popular- “the story.” This promiscuous traffic between different ways of knowing carries the most radical promise of performance studies
Performance studies struggles to open the space between analysis and action
Enacting this paradigm, Conquergood (2002) directed and helped to design live performances in a Hmong refugee campaign in Thailand. Specifically, Conquergood (1988), with his team, produced skits and scenarios drawing on Hmong folklore and folk singing to develop awareness about health problems. Following Conquergood, Sharma (2012) designed and directed a live song and theater campaign in the state of Uttar Pradesh in India
The campaign developed 15 scripts containing health message in different song and theater genres of Northern India
and more than 150 professional troupes were trained to perform these scripts
The campaign was based on Freire's pedagogy
Boal also used other participatory methods such as photography and the puppet theater
Boal showed through this campaign that theater can be used as self-expression by the oppressed
and can help them to change their outlook from passivity toward things to the one of active participation and dramatic action
Boal called this kind of theater as truly educational or the “the theater of conscientization.”
This use of theater and other performance modalities for education has been since been very popular in the Latin America (McCarthy and Galvão, 2004)
Through the work of these performer-thinkers
we see that there are local traditions of using performance
and educating masses about political and social issues in global South
This work is distinct from the dominant Entertainment-Education initiatives supported by organizations situated in the first world or the global North
Song can help give a voice to a people who otherwise are not heard
By merely proposing questions pertaining to our circumstances
a song has the power to shift people's consciousness and create a vision for a better world
So though a song's reception is unique to each listener
there is potential for a communal experience
“Song” can be an ideal medium for people to raise community issues such as health and social behaviors in front of their own community, as it is a medium is that combines lyrics, melody, and rhythm located in a specific place and moment in time to prompt community engagement, promote retention of the messages, and to speak in the language of its audience (Shaw, 2014)
we see the tradition of “song” has been widely popular in Latin America to educate communities for change
Each of these groups has used song to promote awareness of the dangers of Chagas disease
and song's record of promoting participation in the creation of messages to promote health
we engaged in a co-participatory message design process to create a song with children to promote Chagas disease prevention
It would be important here to mention that we
believe and belong to a bottom-up local paradigm of performance that originates from community
The first author of this study first trained as a rhetorical scholar who examined texts as others had produced them
Informed by principles from communication activism
he has increasingly seen the role of rhetorical scholars as producers of texts for social impact
drawing on a community asset-based development perspective
he seeks actively to set aside deficit-based perspective he learned in the Global North to emphasize strengths within communities and the voices in those communities that express those strengths
The second author of this essay is a fifth-generation folk performer belonging to the Swang (musical theater) tradition of northern India
and the second author grew up performing with his father and other socially engaged performer/writers and directors
The third and fourth authors are citizens and scholars from Ecuador
They have worked with members of rural communities affected by Chagas disease in Ecuador for nearly two decades
Although trained as a biological scientist
the third author has increasingly turned to audio and video production to tell stories of people in the community and to document the work performed by our study group by and with community members
first engaged members of the community through standard clinical approaches; he performed blood draws
and reported the results to the Ministry of Health
After realizing that this top-down approach did not necessarily equate to government action within highly impacted communities
he turned to more participatory and community-centered approaches to both the investigation of and proposing solutions to socioecological factors identified by community members as essential to primary prevention of Chagas disease
The Government of Ecuador and the Provincial Government in Loja have longstanding programs to bring pesticide spraying to homes
require that individual families admit workers from the Servicio Nacional de Control de Enfermedades Transmitidas por Vectores Artrópodos (SNEM: National Service for the Control of Arthopod Vectors of Infectious Disease) and its successor agencies into their homes
The idea of addressing home access through children's attitudes was articulated by the fourth author in May 2010
The third and fourth authors consulted with approximately a dozen school teachers
and other individuals in the communities who interacted with youth to investigate the messages that would be most likely to help children learn to identify the triatomine bug and to encourage their parents and other caregivers to work toward the prevention of infestation (unpublished)
The recommendations included avoiding technical jargon
the use of vernacular expressions common to the rural population on this region of Loja province and the use of active learning tools to impart the knowledge to the children in the communities
This consultation process also led the authors think that a different approach was needed to attract the attention of children and
promoting their active role in the prevention of Chagas disease in their households
While this consultation in June 2010 was useful
the third and fourth authors did not feel that they were making much progress in identifying word choices or messages that would be persuasive to the children
facilitated by Ohio University and Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador students
the third and fourth authors turned to the children themselves to shed light on what the most significant messages for the children would be
After engaging in a community and verbal parental consent process approved by the institutional review board of Ohio University and the Comité de Ética de la Investigación en Seres Humanos at Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador
the research team began to work with 10 children ages 6–12 to design messages
specifically the communities of Chaquizhca and Guara
the third and fourth authors (along with students from both Universities and staff from SNEM and the larger project) visited with children in their schools and homes
The team sought to record the children's impressions of what constituted a healthy home
what people could do to make their homes healthier
and how insects played a role in keeping children and their families healthy
Many of the children were initially shy or afraid of the research team
after engaging in constructive play and with the presence of parents and teachers
the children opened up and articulated comments on each issue
although parents and teachers were present
they were not included in the generation of ideas for how to communicate these messages
The children identified the best way to help them learn more about the insects
they said that a song that they could easily learn would help them remember important things about preventing the insects' infestation
All 10 children in the school were invited to participate and permission was given by their parents for their participation
There were no incentives given for participation
and no parents remained for the further activities with the children
the research team then met in the classroom with ten children from Guara School for several hours where they first watched an educational video and worked with a booklet related to Chagas disease
The booklet included factual and cartoon-based information about the disease and activities such as cut and paste
and labyrinth aimed to reinforce knowledge about the Chagas disease transmission and preventive actions that can be undertaken by the family
bilingual members of the research team engaged the children in active conversation in Spanish regarding what the children considered the most important messages
Field notes were taken during this activity
Three key issues that deserved attention emerged: identifying the presence of insects in the home; promoting awareness that they were biting insects; and
naming practical behaviors that could prevent infestations
Once the critical issues for preventing triatomine infestation were identified
the research team organized a song around these themes
subject matter specialists from the team contributed advice
These specialists included infectious disease researchers (5)
The subject matter experts assessed how prevalent the health practices were in the community and the efficacy of the various solutions named by the children
The key was to identify common themes the children articulated with evidence-based solutions for excluding or killing the bugs
Following the initial drafting of the song
which at that point contained three verses
the agency responsible for eliminating triatomine infestation
SNEM requested an additional verse that would highlight and increase acceptability of SNEM's efforts
The added verse was brought back to the children
who did not have any objections to its addition
The song was brought back to the community in July 2010
Children of Guara community performed the song at the school
and the children were encouraged to bring it home and teach it to other members of the family
Because the song was deployed along with other strategies—including classroom education
and more—it is not possible to assess the impact of the song on children's knowledge
to examine the messages themselves and identify promising opportunities for the community
The song generated in coordination with the children is comprised of four stanzas (see Appendix A)
The first three stanzas indicate some of the household management behaviors that the children identified as common in the communities and that raise the risk of being bitten by a tritominae bug
the presence of the bug is identified (“In my house there is a Chinchorro,” “… are two chinchorros,” “… are three chinchorros”)
and the number of insects found in the home grows larger each time
This move not only identifies the insect as common and present in many homes through the communities
it also makes the insect identifiable by its common name
Rather than naming the specific species of bug that might be found
the children use the local term “chinchorro.” After identifying the insect's presence
the next line of each stanza indicates that the insect is one that bites
that the bug is one “who wants to bite me,” “to sting you,” and “to follow me.” The presentation of the insect as one that bites reflects the transmission of disease via the triatomine bug; to contract Chagas' disease
the insect bites to feed and defecates on the host at the same time
she or he rubs the feces into her skin and begins the infection cycle anew
The bugs are not passive feeders that bite only out of opportunity; they will emerge from hiding places at night and “follow” their hosts into bed for feeding
contracting it generally requires repeated exposure to the triatomine bite and the parasite contained within its feces
The children recognize this when the bite is repeated with “me
you” in the third line of each stanza
create additional perceptions of greater susceptibility to contracting Chagas' disease because the risk of exposure is repeated
in addition to mechanically destroying nests by sweeping
the acid in the broom can work as a natural insecticide that may prevent reinfestation
Putting up screens may prevent problems of triatomine infestation as well
Although the words did not specify whether the screens represent bug nets erected over the individual bed or screens on windows and doorways into the home
the actions performed as part of the song mime erecting bug nets
Bug nets placed over the individual bed can prevent the transmission of Chagas because the bugs
which generally live in cracks in the home wall or behind picture frames and similar hiding places
an alternative interpretation of placing window screens is also efficacious
Window screens also limit introduction of the insect into the home
as they provide a physical barrier to entry
sweeping can remove nests after infestation
screening can prevent the establishment of nest or prevent the bugs from feeding should infestation have already occurred
if an existing chicken nest containing triatomines is not moved outside the home or away from the walls of the home
It is important then to move nests when one is collecting eggs or raising fighting birds away from the peridomicile and certainly not into the domicile
All three of these strategies are simple behaviors to adopt: sweeping
and moving chicken nests containing chinchorros can easily be performed
It is also important to note the agent to whose this responsibility is assigned: to mommy
Prevention of Chagas becomes a feminine act
Although men (and elders and children) are certainly capable of picking up a broom
the children articulate social norms that make household maintenance the responsibility of women
indicate the general problem of transmission as well as the individual child's susceptibility to transmission
to locate infestation as a common problem (for me and you)
indicate the act of that can be performed to lessen infestation as well as its repeatability
The children's stanzas reflect concepts common in health communication theories for promoting behavioral change
The presence of the bug reflects awareness
the representation of transmission reflects perceived susceptibility
and the means of prevention reflect efficacy
have identified important facets of promoting health behavior change in Guara that can be message points for a campaign to spread their message
This community-centered and community-articulated pathway
becomes disrupted in the fourth stanza of the song
we are told about a house in which there are no triatomines
The reason that the fourth house has no bugs is not because of sweeping or netting or individual change; rather; this home is bug-free “because SNEM fumigates here.” SNEM
the acronym for the now disbanded Servicio Nacional de Control de Enfermedades Transmitidas por Vectores Artrópodos (National Service for the Control of Arthopod Vectors of Infectious Disease)
not an agency based in Calvas County or the community of Guara
In addition to being geographically distant
the solution they provide is insecticide spraying
however it should be noted that insecticide must be repeatedly applied with specialized equipment and is very expensive when compared with the average household income in the community
Because of the change in agent (from mother to outside government workers) and the change in act (from the simple and easily accomplished to the expert and expensive)
of the strategy for eliminating triatomine bugs changes
the focus on spraying likely lessens the self-efficacy of families responding to the song
The target of persuasion and the goal of persuasion also changes
The first three verses implied that the family
The final verse indicates that the desired outcome is that “we have understood that the chinchorro is not welcome
nor there.” This outcome is a change in attitude rather than a change of behavior
the change in attitude occurs among the children themselves rather than in the family unit
confusion is introduced as to who is responsible for preventing infestations
and the role of community members in this prevention
This change was introduced after the children had generated their topics and the initial parts of the song
Because the larger research project of which this song is a part also included staff of SNEM
when the children's topics were formalized into the song
the SNEM members sought additional inclusion of their efforts into the song
allows the song to recognize the important contributions that SNEM and the Ministry of Health have made to prevention of Chagas disease but also
distracts from the voice of the community by displacing their community-based suggestions with solutions offered by the central government
The use of the Entertainment Education approach in Guara reveals a potentially powerful way of bringing children into the construction of their own health interventions
This song brings Entertainment Education to the context of neglected tropical diseases
our analysis of the song and its development may provide important insights for other practitioners who wish to incorporate this longstanding and powerful form of intervention in the neglected tropical disease context
These potentials for entertainment education approaches encourage us to understand how people assert control in their local communities. EE approaches encourage us to listen to the community to emphasize local knowledge and norms, but also to understand whether there are harmful norms in the community that provide potential loci for change (Riley et al., 2017)
potential harmful norms might exist concerning perceptions of gender roles
Throughout the verses created by the children
bugs can bite children because of the mother's inaction (“mommy has not swept” and “mommy has not set up the screens”) or are protected when “my mommy moved the nest.” These verses reflect traditional Ecuadoran assumption that women are responsible for the care of families and upbringing of children while men are able to be less active in parenting
Men are just as capable of sweeping floors
but the children do not make fathers responsible for doing these things
Because the children indicated that mothers were important in the prevention of Chagas disease
or in other communities where this approach is adopted
would benefit from including parents in the co-creation of the Entertainment-Education intervention
might allow all key players in the community to be involved in construing the messages
Although there are anthropological and sociological explanations for the emergence of these gender roles
the children's communicative choices reveal an important site of intervention for broader social change and possibilities in rural Ecuador
albeit one that should be revisited in future efforts
this dichotomization has been shown to be false; when entertainment education has been put into practice over the past two decades
a continuum between a more top-down and a more bottom-up approach has emerged
Because our project was a true cooperation between our research group
our project sought to incorporate the voices of SNEM members alongside those of the community
The SNEM team is correct that spraying the house does kill most triatomines and can complement well behavioral and home maintenance strategies
if insecticides become emphasized as the best or only solutions
SNEM's intervention into the song may limit perceptions of the effectiveness of alternative strategies or promote dependence on external intervention in the community
SNEM's participation in writing the song reveals a tension in how EE approaches are assumed to emphasize local voices but how they must also include national voices to gain funding and support from governmental actors
although we privilege the voice of the community because of our commitment to participatory research and intervention
practical matters of governmental and funding relations for other portions of the project must also be brought into the equation
The co-participatory design of this song reveals that there are opportunities for experts to intervene in ways that both enable and disable community voices
with potentially supportive or unsupportive effects for preventing risk factors for neglected tropical diseases

“I mean, it’s really quite beautiful…” Orlando Weeks smiles. “I was going to sugarcoat it a little bit, but no, it’s gorgeous.” The softly-spoken singer is describing his adopted hometown of Lisbon, a place that seems almost like a character on new record ‘LOJA’
The album takes its name from the Portuguese word for ‘store’ – inspired by an art studio he set up in a shopfront there – and you can practically hear the city in its eleven songs
with their echoes of soaring towers and coastal breezes
primary colour world of ‘80s-inflected art-pop
but a visual artist too; he studied illustration at art college
and makes all of the accompanying graphics for each of his records
It’s a practice that has come to define the way he lives
“We don’t have a big apartment,” Weeks explains
So we found this – it was being advertised as a shop – and I just went and had a look
and I could make all my prints and paintings and drawings
It’s the first time I’ve ever had a studio
It’s totally invigorated my desire to make visual work that needn’t be anything to do with a record
rather than tailor-making stuff specifically to an album.”
smiling at his own fortune to be somewhere so in tune with his creative output
in all sorts of ways – and I have my partner to thank for that
“There’s a song on the record called ‘You & The Packhorse Blues’ that’s about how I am comfortable admitting that I am essentially a packhorse
I’m good at carrying stuff and I can be motivational
but I am a poor organiser and quite easily get stuck in my ways
it’s going to happen’ and kicking me into gear
then I don’t think it would’ve happened
every day I find a reason to count my blessings.”
has been giving him an unsurprisingly new way of looking at the world and his surroundings
but I’m also seeing it through his eyes
“We live really close to the Gulbenkian museum
I would find them a very nice place to spend time
But the way that he approaches them is that they have magic
and I’m pulling that rareness of feeling into the way I write the songs
It’s all just part of the fervour of all this newness
I found this when my son was born actually
the energy that you get from new love is extraordinary
I felt the same thing about this new place
“The energy that you get from new love is extraordinary.”
It would be another new environment that would then go on to shape ‘LOJA’’s final form
Having originally conducted sessions with previous collaborator Nathan Jenkins (otherwise known as the producer Bullion)
Orlando then headed to the Isle of Wight’s residential Chale Abbey Studios with producer Sergio Maschetko – who recorded ‘Ants From Up There’ by Black Country
New Road there – and a handpicked live band of musicians
The album certainly has the feel of being the work of many hands – far more so than Weeks’ unmistakably solitary previous albums
“The goal that I set myself originally was for it to feel a lot more like a band in a room,” he explains
“But to make a great record as a band playing in a room
There are lots of voices alongside Orlando’s on ‘LOJA’ – here’s a guide to who’s who:
Rhian Teasdale Rhian from Wet Leg is the foil to Weeks’ pleading protagonist on thumping lead single ‘Dig’ – Orlando says the track is about an “under your breath half-argument”
Her day job with one of the biggest indie acts around needs no introduction
but neatly she hails from the Isle of Wight
where the bulk of ‘LOJA’ was recorded.Tony NjokuTony’s appearance on ‘LOJA’ follows his EP ‘Last Bloom’ earlier this year
and his guest turns on albums from the likes of Metronomy and PVA
The British-Nigerian songwriter was raised between London and Lagos
and delightfully enough he blended a tie-in Last Bloom perfume to celebrate his EP’s release.Katy J PearsonKaty is one of the leading lights of the folk revival in the UK at the moment
and has just announced a new album herself
but most recently follows her re-scoring of The Wicker Man alongside acts like Drug Store Romeos
Orlando had assembled a collection of brilliant musicians but
“I think we just bit off more than we could chew
and so that meant the manifesto for the record changed,” he continues
“It wasn’t gonna work as a band in a room in a space and a time; it needed to be a bit more produced
I’d come back to Lisbon by that point
and I was living with the recordings and feeling like it wasn’t holding together as a record
Then hearing Ben Howard’s [Bullion-produced] record come out I just thought
‘Why am I not re-approaching Nathan to help me finish the record?’”
The move back towards something resembling a band dynamic feels like a big shift in his solo material
it seemed as though he was trying to distance himself from that way of writing
whereas now there’s a feeling that he might have made peace with returning to musical collaboration
“A responsibility I felt out the back of it was if I’m not gonna be part of a band
then I have to make things that are so specifically ‘me’ that there could be no grey area
and feel less like I need to make music that is specifically not anything of the same world
Orlando was asked if he’d ever consider playing his old band’s songs live again – and
How does he feel about returning to that material
“I would only ever do it if I felt like it would be a good idea
and I’d asked the other boys if they minded
and then I’ll think about whether I want to do it two nights on the bounce
It’s nice not to feel like something is closed off
‘LOJA’ has moments of grit among the refined
tasteful songwriting that has come to embody Orlando’s solo career – not least in highlight and recent single ‘Dig’
it’s quite hard to turn it down!” he laughs
“I think I still want to try and make a record that sounds like
is of a man at peace with his surroundings
He jokes that he’s “gonna get some points on the tourist licence”
but he’s at pains to point out his sincerity when talking about the city he now calls home
but it isn’t a place that feels stuffy to me,” he says
“So you have this quite vibrant human experience next to really insane
It has amazing Metro art in all the stations
People get quite snooty about that kind of thing
Maybe if I’m here long enough I’ll get to do some tiles in one of the stations

Weeks’ work with the indie darlings is impossibly connected to his life
Since then he has offered a string of superb
the songwriter must surely be seen most clearly in his own right
I had the pleasure of following The Maccabees for tens of gigs during their earliest moments
Trying to find the location of the venue that ended up looking like a disused school gym
travelling up and down motorways to see them support The Futureheads and travelling to the arse-end of middle England to scoot between their sets and that of Hot Club De Paris (ask your parents)
even I can now happily attest that Orlando Weeks is far more than just the singer of that important band
Loja is the sum of Weeks’ long and winding road
It captures not only the brilliance of The Gritterman
which each took massive strides forward for him as an artist
but also the journey Weeks has experienced as a man
No longer the shiny-faced young adult with a collar so tightened to the top one feared his head might pop off
Weeks is now creating records that act as maps to the landscape of his adult life
Effortlessly blending electronic modernism with the rich organic crema that one can only find in the cafes of Lisbon
Weeks is clearly evolving beyond anything his audience may have imagined
There’s a dexterity to Loja that hasn’t been seen before
as he not only provides a sense of welcoming warmth but doesn’t ignore the chill of the shadows it can cast
it’s difficult not to see Loja – an ode to the new artist studio he resides in – as Week’s striding out of the shadow of his former work and enveloping himself in the blissful sunshine of a new chapter
It is a record that feels liberated enough to do what it pleases
A concluding comment from my wife: “Why do you look so proud?”
Release Date: June 6th | Producer: Sergio Maschetzko
‘Longing’: Opening with his enigmatic vocal is a smart way for Orlando Weeks to confirm his evolution away from “former Maccabees singer” into his own artistic presence
the fact that ‘Longing’ continues to sonically raise the listener’s spirit is a happy coincidence
‘Best Night’: There are two paths for an album to take
They can either undulate between genre and rhythm
delivering something that never stays still
or they can flow from river to sea with a simple grace
and ‘Best Night’ sees us floating down toward the ocean
‘Wake Up’: Weeks’ captivating lyrics and always cherishable vocals continue to provide solace in an otherwise lonesome soundscape on ‘Wake Up’
Ethereal as the morning dew dripping off a strange window before kicking into a chainsaw riff that provides a welcome dose of grit
‘Dig’: While the record is certainly blessed with a light touch and Weeks’ noted artistry, there is also a pulsing rhythm to the LP that many will overlook. ‘Dig’, complimented by Wet Leg’s Rhian Teasdale
is one of the album’s best visions of this
built out of the breathy tension of the two singers biting at one another
‘You & The Packhorse Blues’: It may feel easy to pick out this track as one of the lighter moments of the LP
and it’s likely Weeks’ most obvious ‘thank you’ to his wife for moving with him to lisbon
The flow continues to take us through a new dusty landscape and towards the sea
‘Good To See You’: This is the first time Weeks moves away from the more organic sound that permeates the record and welcomes the electro wobble that has filtered into most of his post-Maccabees work
A sense of warmth and welcoming overcomes the potentially cold introduction to produce smiles and swaying hips
as electronic glitches become more prominent
Weeks produces a slow-build beauty that has all the chops to completely captivate you
there is always the chance of the odd rock and rapid capsizing you
‘Please Hold’ is certainly the most heartbreaking track on the LP
as Weeks pleads to hold on: “It’s winter now
but the spring is coming,” he belts with a purpose
‘Sorry’: Weeks’ ability to blend electronic and organic sounds together has been a mainstay of his previous work
and ‘Sorry’ is so effortless it’s difficult to call the drum machine he uses anything other than an extension of his creativity
The duality allows every song to be both rich in pathos and gilded with a sense of hope
pushing the tempo and allowing the almost-choral breaks to be punctuated with a sense of purpose
It’s hard not to feel enlivened by such a moving track
add headphones to that concoction and you have something potentially life-changing
‘Beautiful Place’: The sweet embrace of the ocean
Weeks sees us out with something unstoppably tender and enveloping
pushing his prominent vocal to the fore and concluding a record worthy of his heavenly tone

Following the recent release of his third LP ‘LOJA’ - which DIY hailed as “his most fully realised solo album yet” - Orlando Weeks has confirmed that he’ll be touring the record around the UK this Autumn
Kicking off on 24th September in Newcastle
the run of shows will see him play Manchester
before concluding with a night in Brighton on 4th October
He’s also set to be performing with the backing of a full live band (unlike his more stripped-back recent residency at The Copeland Gallery)
many of whom contributed to the album recording itself
“I’m very excited to be taking LOJA’s music on the road”
“I’ll also be playing songs from all sorts of long-ago and not so long-ago chapters
Can’t wait.’’ Could this mean he’ll be airing some beloved Maccabees tunes while on the road
If our recent interview with him (which you can read in full below) is anything to go by
that’s certainly not off the table…
Catch Orlando live this Autumn on the following dates:

The primary climatic parameter frequently scrutinized in water balance assessments for water utilization is precipitation
Given its considerable variability across locations and over time
it is imperative to rely on high-quality statistical information to facilitate accurate analyses
This study aims to refine the estimation of precipitation data by enhancing information obtained from freely accessible satellite sensors with data collected from established observation stations
Monthly precipitation data spanning from 2000 to 2015 were gathered from 24 stations
Three distinct methodologies were employed to adjust individual station data to address missing data
Consistency analysis and data refinement were conducted for stations requiring adjustments
utilizing graphical analysis and non-parametric statistical techniques
The satellite products under evaluation correspond to the IMERG v6 algorithm
statistical metrics were used to compare observed and estimated data
A correction coefficient was computed by aligning monthly means between observed and calculated data to mitigate random and systemic errors
The IMERG algorithm demonstrates proficiency in accounting for altitude and seasonal variations
with the adjustment significantly enhancing its performance under these conditions
Precipitation is generally recognised as an important meteorological variable in the water cycle and the primary supply source for various water resources (Diaz et al., 2009). Therefore, analysing its behaviour in a region is indispensable. However, quantifying this task becomes complex when its spatial and temporal distribution is highly variable (Andrade, 2016)
In 1997, the Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission (TRMM) was launched by NASA and JAXA; out of any forecast, this mission lasted 17 years until April 2015. Among the most significant achievements was the observation of rainfall rates in the tropics, the area of the planet where two-thirds of the rainfall is concentrated, and these data could be converted into three-dimensional images, allowing experts to identify the internal structure of storms (Morrow, 2015)
Overall, the TRMM produced global rainfall estimates based on remote data observations. The 3B42 algorithm provided information with a spatial resolution of 0.25° and a temporal resolution of 3 h, making it an important data set product for hydrometeorological applications, particularly in areas without observed data (Zulkafli et al., 2014)
The Integrated Multi-Satellite Retrievals algorithm of GPM version 06 (IMERG) has combined information from the GPM satellite constellation and the first precipitation estimates collected by the TRMM mission. By comparing present and past data, specialists are optimising the climatological models, making them more accurate; these data have been available since June 2000 and have a spatial resolution of 0.1° (Huffman et al., 2022)
the current study aims to refine satellite precipitation estimates by incorporating surface-measured data through a correction factor
This effort is geared towards acquiring information suitable for various analyses to manage and develop water resources in Ecuador’s Loja province
acknowledging the constraints posed by limited access to meteorological station data
Due to the availability of existing pluviometric information, the analysis period in Figure 1 corresponds to 16 years
Three methodologies were used to fill in missing information, each of which was selected according to the number of data to be filled in and further characteristics as described below Figure 2
This method constructs a linear model represented by the “x” independent variable and “y” dependent variable. When the r coefficient exceeds 0.7, the model represents a good correlation between the data (Carrera et al., 2016), where n is the number of data pairs, based on Eq. 1:
x= Represents the values of the observations for the variable x (observed data)
y= Represents the values of the observations for variable x (calculated missing data)
∑xy= The sum of the products of the values of for all observations
∑x,∑y= The sums of all values of and respectively
∑y2= The sums of squares of all y-values respectively
This method was used to fill stations with information that was missing by no more than 10% and to maintain a station with similar characteristics that could be used as a base station
It is an average that considers the inverse of the squared distance as a weighting factor, thus distributing the contribution of each auxiliary station by weight, based on Eq. 2 (Chow et al., 1994), cited by (Toro et al., 2017)
Pm = precipitation is generated for the station to be filled in
P3 = Monthly precipitation of each station in each quadrant
d3 = Distance from each station to the station to be refilled
1/d12 = The weight applies to each station concerning the station to be filled in
This model was used to fill in the data of stations that
have a base station and do not exceed 10% of missing data
The NR was trained with the help of the Sklearn Python library, a set of routines for predictive analytics that includes classifier algorithms, regression and clustering algorithms, among others (Pedregosa et al., 2019)
ma = The slope of the graph to which the records are fitted. a= Sub-index to be designated for the adjusted data in Eq. 3
mo = The slope of the graph at the time Po was observed. o= Sub-index that is designated for the existing data in Eq. 3
The accumulated series were defined in seven groups of stations, given that the climatic, hydrographic and topographic conditions are variable throughout the study area and that the stations under analysis are dispersed over it so as not to cause errors and distortions. Considering the above, the criteria for grouping were climatic similarity, altitude and hydrographic unit, Supplementary Table S2
Parametric tests assume that the data distribution is normal and sensitive to the amount of data
non-parametric tests do not require any assumption of known distribution
which indicates that they are helpful for a wide range of distributions
Corresponding to a parametric test that relates the variances of two sets of data, these sets are the result of dividing the series to be evaluated into two groups, based on Eq. 4 and Eq. 5
σ12,σ22= Variances of missing data
S12,S22= Variance of the existing data
n1−1,n2−1= Degrees of freedom
n1 y n2= Amount of data for each subset
This is a non-parametric test to determine whether two samples differ in relation to their medians (Gómez, Danglot, and Vega, 2003). The overall median value is determined by combining the values of each sample, as shown in Supplementary Table S3. Then, it is determined in each sample how many higher and lower values exist concerning the overall median (Badii et al., 2012), cited by (Valencia et al., 2020)
It is a parametric test that evaluates two sets of data resulting from dividing the series to be evaluated into two groups. The test requires that the variances are not significantly different. It is rejected if T falls within the rejection region for a significance level of α, based on Eq. 6 and Eq. 7 and Eq. 8
x1¯,x2¯ = Mean of the subsets
This is the non-parametric alternative to comparing two independent averages via Student’s t-test. The test’s null hypothesis is that the two samples of size n1 and n2 are from identical continuous populations. The alternative hypothesis can be one-sided or two-sided and only assumes that the central tendency of one population differs from the other, but not a difference in shape or dispersion (Berlanga and Rubio, 2012)
Samples A and B are identified, with N and M observations. The observations are ordered as if they were a single sample and ordered ranges of values are assigned. Subsequently, the values belonging to each sample are identified, and the sums of each sample’s ranges are calculated, thus defining S, which corresponds to the sum of ranges of the most negligible value in (Badii et al., 2012) cited by (Valencia et al., 2020)
The satellite data evaluated in this work corresponds to GPM’s Integrated Multi-Satellite Retrievals algorithm in its version 06 (IMERG). The data corresponds to monthly accumulated precipitation estimates at a spatial resolution of 0.1° per pixel. you can access it with your username and password

Satellite precipitation estimates are commonly affected by random and systematic errors (bias) (Mendez, 2016)
The present work used a multiplicative correction factor through the Inter-Sectoral Impact Model Intercomparison Project (ISIMIP) method
The method preserves relative changes in monthly precipitation values
the method also corrects for daily variability on the monthly mean; however
this detail is not explored in the present work as no daily scale data is being analysed
PiDObs= Monthly average data observed
PiDmod= Monthly average data of the series to be corrected
The following equation will adjust the daily precipitation data once the C-factor is defined, based on Eq. 10
P′ijDMod= Adjusted satellite monthly data
PijDMod= Monthly satellite rainfall data
This correction is applied to the grid point closest to the station point. Interpolation techniques generally underestimate high-intensity rainfall and overestimate low-intensity rainfall (Bohling and Wilson, 2006)
Once the available data quality analysis has been carried out, Figure 1 defines the network of rainfall stations that will be used to evaluate satellite precipitation products
The results presented in the table above show that the models fit the data. The coefficient of determination represents the percentage of variation in the response variable, which a linear model explains. In other words, there is a good correlation between the data (Toro et al., 2017)
which obtained similar results when filling in missing data using the linear correlation method for the Ambi River basin
The summary of the fit by the linear correlation method for stations with up to 10% missing data is presented in Supplementary Table S5
This method consists of applying an average with the inverse of the squared distance that will act as a weighting factor; in addition, it is necessary to the deductive rationale based on the percentage of participation that the missing data has over the other available monthly data, in addition, the dependent meteorological variable is the value of the missing data in the station. The independent ones are the value of the variable of the auxiliary stations (Campos, 1998)
United States National Weather was applied to stations M0432 and M0142; given that there were no auxiliary base stations to apply the linear correlation method and that the data to be completed is less than 10%, this method was decided upon. In addition, station M1161 was used to apply the model after verifying the respective data based on Supplementary Table S6
The precipitation values obtained by this method are quite stable concerning the existing statistics since
as will be analysed later in the double mass plot
They passed the statistical tests of confirmatory analysis
The missing data adjustment by this methodology consisted of using three auxiliary stations plus the station to be completed
The training of the NR can be carried out considering several criteria since the meteorological precipitation data adopted were climatic similarity between stations
altitude and preferably that they are within the same hydrographic system
Supplementary Figure S4–S13 shows the results obtained for the ten stations that completed the missing data by this method
The graphs show the annual distribution of precipitation at the auxiliary stations in green
the station to be completed in red and the station with complete data in blue
It can also be seen that the annual distribution for all the auxiliary stations shows a similar trend
which is evidence that a good selection criterion was used
It can also be seen that the complete station graphically shows good results
which are corroborated by the consistency analysis
Once the data had been completed using the methodologies described above, the double mass graph was used to detect series with certain types of systemic errors due to data collection, changes in instrumentation, etc. The results show that 20 of the 24 stations have consistent data for the period evaluated. The results show that 20 out of 24 stations present consistent data for the period evaluated in Supplementary Figure S14–S36
Stations M0435 in Supplementary Figure S37, M0544 in Supplementary Figure S38, and M0147 in Supplementary Figure S39 present a significant break in their slope
This methodology did not evaluate station M0142 as it could not be incorporated into any group because it is located in another hydrographic demarcation
The adjustment made to stations Alamor M0435 in Supplementary Figure S37, Colaisaca M0544 in Supplementary Figure S38, and Yangana M0147 in Supplementary Figure S39 is presented in the following graph: a) corresponds to the uncorrected data
The graphs in Supplementary Figure S40–S63 show that the slope break disappears after adjustment
the adjusted series presents a stable relationship of proportionality and consistency
Supplementary Table S7 presents the results of the Kolmogorov-Smirnov (K-S) test
which was performed to validate the fit of the theoretical function
A significance level of 5% (p-value = 0.05) was used as the threshold for judging whether a result is statistically significant
Null hypothesis Ho; is no statistically significant difference between the distribution of the station data and the Normal distribution
Alternative Hypothesis Ha; There is a statistically significant difference between the distribution of the sample station data and the Normal distribution
The results in Supplementary Table S7 indicate that for all stations
and Ha is confirmed because all values are below the significance level
Since it is confirmed that the data do not present a normal distribution
the statistical tests to be used are the non-parametric ones
Supplementary Table S7 also presents the results of the confirmatory tests
The median test showed that none of the stations presented statistically significant differences concerning the value of the measure of central tendency
concluding that the subgroups formed present identical statistical properties
the subgroups formed have similar distributions
they are statistically equivalent in their position
The statistical metrics between the observed and estimated data without correction show graphically that the 24 stations evaluated show a trend concerning the annual rainfall distribution. However, the observed values are higher than the simulated values. Although they show a similar trend, there is a deviation between the observed and simulated values, which is confirmed by the RMSE values that range from 34 to 157, as shown in Supplementary Table S8
Supplementary Figure S40–S63 graphically show the annual trend of observed and estimated rainfall for the 24 stations analysed. If we look at Supplementary Table S1, where the altitude is presented, and Supplementary Figure S1
where the distribution of the analysed stations is given
it can be seen that the stations located in the lower part (example M0151; 223 m
a.s.l) of the study area present a defined distribution during the year
that means with months of high concentration and months of low or no rainfall
This differs from the stations in the upper part (example M0432; 2,525 m
where precipitation variability during the year is observed
Considering the above and observing the data in Supplementary Table S9
it must be evident that the IMERG estimated data present a better adjustment on the stations in the low zone and defined seasonality concerning the stations in the high zone and with variable seasonality
the altitudinal difference and the seasonal variation are not factors that condition a high or low performance of the estimates of the satellite products analysed in this work since
One thing to consider from the results presented is that stations M0147 and M0432 are the least well-adjusted according to the statistical parameters
Supplementary Table S9 presents the bias correction performance between observed and estimated data for the methodology proposed in this paper
Using the correction factor obtained for each station and each month from Supplementary Table S9 significantly improves the simulated data
The data simulated by IMERG without correction present an underestimation in most stations concerning the observed data
there is a better fit between the corrected and observed data
Part of the confirmatory analyses carried out can be seen from the results obtained in Supplementary Table S7
as well as in the studies carried out by Carvajal and Castro
after analysing the probabilistic distribution of the data
have evaluated various parametric and non-parametric tests
and concluded that graphical tests and confirmatory statistical analyses are essential tools in the exploratory analysis of data
In the statistical indicators of efficiency in the results obtained in Supplementary Table S8 and as indicated by (Molnar et al., 2020) in Supplementary Table S4
the NS values for the stations evaluated range from satisfactory to good
there is an underestimation between the observed and simulated data
and the R coefficient presents values between 0.6 and 0.93
indicating a correlation between the observed and simulated values
If we visualise Supplementary Figure S4, we can identify that these are closer to the eastern mountain range; that is, by analysing this scenario, the IMERG data present a low adjustment concerning those observed in areas close to the Amazon. The above results are similar to those obtained by (Mendez, 2016)
where the IMERG products represent very well the temporal variability in a region of Chile
Zulkafli compared the TRMM V6 and V7 products with data from rain gauges in the northern region of Peru and southern Ecuador
resulting in an underestimation between the estimated and observed data in the western regions of the Andes
Both of these studies are somewhat related to the present work
It is important to emphasise that to compare results with other regional studies. It is necessary to consider the conditions under which they have been carried out, given that, as stated by (Wang and Wolff, 2012) in their study on the evaluation of TRMM products in Central Florida
these results cannot apply to other regions as there are determining factors such as the rainfall regime and the spatial and temporal scale that define the conditions of a region
Likewise, the NS is between 0.36 and 0.89, and the Pearson coefficient is between 0.6 and 0.91. What contrasts with these results are the high RMSE values, which are between 104 and 25. These RMSE error values can be associated with the analysis level, as data are being analysed monthly. These results are also similar to those obtained by (Ramoelo et al., 2013)
the satellite products corresponding to the IMERG V06 algorithm were evaluated using rainfall data from selected monthly scale stations for the province of Loja in southern Ecuador
Four statistical efficiency indicators were used for this evaluation: mean square error
Nash-Sutccliffe coefficient and Pearson coefficient
the statistical series of observed data were analysed and adjusted
The use of various methodologies for adjusting missing data allowed better adjustment of the information and
This allowed a broader approach according to each situation
The exploratory graphical analysis applying the double mass curve identified consistency in the statistical series of 20 of the 23 stations evaluated by this method
In addition to identifying that the series of three stations presented inconsistencies
thus obtaining a series suitable for subsequent analyses
The application of non-parametric statistical tests such as the Median and the Mann-Whitney U test helps to confirm the exploratory graphical analysis
which in turn allows us to have confidence in the statistical series to be used for further analysis
The results show good performance of the uncorrected satellite products with R coefficients between 0.55 and 0.93 and NS from 0.21 to 0.66
The RVB presents underestimates between simulated and observed values and RMSE values of 157 and 24
The IMERG underestimates rainfall in most of the 24 stations evaluated
where a slight overestimation is evident in both cases without exceeding unity
Applying the correction factor in general terms significantly improved the simulated data
obtaining values of R between 0.6 and 0.95
The high values of RSME are associated with the assessment being carried out on a monthly scale
The performance of the evaluated satellite products does not vary at the altitudinal level nor the temporal level; the results show that their performance is similar in both scenarios
Suppose it has been identified that the performance is lower when approaching the Amazon region of Ecuador
this result should be corroborated with more detailed information since
only two stations were close to this region
and the data obtained from them allowed us to reach this conclusion
The results show that the methodology applied for correcting the simulated data performed well; however
it is recommended that an evaluation with daily scale series be carried out to obtain better results

his teenage dream was to be a visual artist
a curveball arose while studying when he formed The Maccabees with friends
the band became a much more significant entity than Weeks ever thought imaginable
Weeks is finally set to realise his life-long ambition to have his own exhibition in London
The presentation will take place at The Copeland Gallery in London from June 6th to June 9th
the space will display his work in public for the first time
premiering tracks from his new studio album
Weeks has accomplished many impressive feats in his career
whether selling out multiple nights at Alexandra Palace with The Maccabees or writing the festive graphic novel The Gritterman
which was later turned into his stage play
the idea of sharing his art with the general public is filling him with trepidation
His family has built a new life in the Portuguese capital
it’s provided him with a creative space of his own for the first time
allowing him to build a sanctuary to make music and illustrations
comes from the Portuguese word for ‘Store’
as Weeks’ studio space was an unused shop before the former Maccabees frontman lovingly adopted it
which he’s soon set to transport to London
Weeks explains to Far Out how Loja was not initially part of the script and only materialised after another record was scrapped
The aborted project was titled Tonk and was inspired aesthetically by an album cover by War and an exhibition by Helen Frankenthaler
which Weeks describes as “colourful and abstract.” However
while the visual aspect of the record was well-rounded
the songs presented a more testing challenge
Weeks elaborates: “I went and did a session with Nathan (Bullion)
we both agreed that I needed to spend more time writing
The relief I felt…I was glad I had gone a different route.”
Even though the art isn’t necessarily related to the songs on the new record
Weeks insists there is “a parity between them,” which will create a “more multidimensional” live performance
Weeks will take the exhibition to various other major cities across Europe and even received a message about one possible exciting location shortly before our conversation
Although he still plans to tour Loja in the traditional sense
he’s hopeful that the exhibitions can sporadically exist side-by-side
allowing him to express the full spectrum of his artistry
which is impossible to do with songs alone
Weeks took a backseat from sharing his visual art
but it was still an important part of his life
I definitely didn’t think I’d still be doing it 20 years on
Art was always my first passion and the first I felt like I was any good at,” Weeks frankly admits
While he’s been “making stuff all the way along”
including the cover work for the first Maccabees record
Weeks reached a point where it became a private hobby
the singer felt his art put further spotlight on him during interviews when they “were such a democratic band”
Weeks concedes the attention made him feel “weird” and said it put an “unnecessary strain on things”
it’s been almost a decade since The Maccabees parted ways
and Weeks is finally ready to revisit that part of his career during The Copeland Gallery exhibition
“I think I’m going to play a Maccabees song
I might do it on the first night and not enjoy it
The dust has firmly settled on The Maccabees split, with the band bidding farewell in 2017. Felix and Hugo White are set to release their debut album with new band 86TVs this summer
I’ll be front and centre,” he excitedly promises
Weeks’ new Portuguese surroundings shaped Loja
I’m still finding little things daily that remind me how grateful I am to be in a new place
I hope the record has a feeling of the slight giddiness of being able to be in this beautiful city and the newness of it all.”
Weeks likens the feeling of “freshness” he feels since moving to Lisbon to “new love,” which makes him wake up every day being “blessed with emotion.” This sentiment bleeds into the optimistically sun-soaked sounds of LOJA
It was his partner who spearheaded the move to Portugal
Weeks expresses his gratitude for “finding a way to improve my life and our life as a family”
Although he never saw himself as a beach person
Weeks enjoys spending his spare time swimming in the sea and taking advantage of the outdoors
while he’s progressing with his Portuguese
and I’m determined not to get left behind”
Weeks swapped one coastal location for another and headed to the Isle of Wight to work with producer Sergio Maschetzko
it resulted in his most collaborative album since leaving The Maccabees
“I’m going to take some musicians to a studio
LOJA also features guest appearances from Katy J Pearson
Pearson was the catalyst for his collaboration with Teasdale on ‘Dig’ after she “vaguely introduced” the pair
“Rhian had asked me to be in a Wet Leg video
I’m worried I’ll ruin my videos; the last thing I want to do is ruin someone else’s
it meant that I had an ask in the bank,” he reveals of the song’s origin
Weeks believes it’s imperative “not to get stuck in your ways,” whether in his personal life or working with new people like Teasdale musically
His move to Lisbon has been a reminder that “newness is good,” which he sings from the rooftops on Loja
Although the album is released digitally on June 6th
it won’t be available to buy physically until August 23rd
He’s focused on creating and moving on to whatever comes next
Two decades into a career he never thought would occur
and Loja beautifully bottles this effervescence over 11 tracks
Loja is out now digitally through Fiction Records and is available to pre-order in physical formats here
Quito: A bus collided with a car in southern Ecuador
killing at least 18 people and injuring eight others
The accident took place Friday in Ecuador's Loja province bordering Peru
The prosecutor's office raised the death toll from an initial 16 to 18
The bus collided with a car traveling in the opposite direction and overturned
expressed her "deep solidarity with the families affected by this unfortunate event."
Traffic accidents are among the main causes of death in Ecuador
The country saw almost 21,000 accidents in 2023
848 deaths resulted from the more than 8,400 accidents recorded
a bus carrying 35 Indigenous people overturned on the outskirts of capital Quito
Despite its name, at this time of year, with temperatures nearing 30 degrees Celsius, the Infiernos de Granada (literally
Hells of Granada) trail seems much more like paradise
with a number of breathtaking waterfalls and caves along the way
at the 'pabellón municipal' sports facility
a path which runs alongside the Genil and leads right to the heart of this natural haven
Not too far along the path there is a short climb
with metal holds installed into the rocks to help hikers
The incredible views of the landscape at the top are well worth the climb
This is also where the trail's first cave is located
This cave is known as the Cueva de los Murciélagos (cave of bats)
Care must be taken to not make too much noise which could disturb its occupants
Just next to the cave is one of the compulsory pit stops along the route: the viewpoint over the spectacular Infiernos de Loja gorge
The trail then continues to the Cola del Caballo
an impressive waterfall on the other side of the riverbank
Together with the viewpoint of the Infiernos
this is one of the key points of interest along the route
Packed with refreshing waterfalls and caves
it is the perfect escape from the late summer heat
Loja is also known for the Fuente de los 25 Caños (fountain of 25 pipes) which originates back to the time of the Arab occupation of the town
There are stories of secret passages that connected the Arab fortress with a spring supplying water to the walled city
However it wasn't until the 16th century that the fountain was created with all its spouts
is said to have witnessed the blossoming of love between a young Moorish woman and her Christian lover
and that "whoever drinks from each spout will find their love that year"

Orlando Weeks’ forthcoming new album ‘LOJA’ (Portuguese for ‘store’) was written in both London and Lisbon
Recording began in earnest in January 2023 at the beautiful Chale Abbey Studios with longtime live collaborator Sergio Maschetzko (Black Country
supported by co-producer and engineer David Granshaw
Nathan Jerkins a/k/a Bullion contributed additional production and mixing
long worn-out promises being remade and road weary offences being retaken
The record features a number of other key collaborators including Katy J Pearson
Oliver Hamilton of the band Caroline and Alejandro Aranda a/k/a Scary Pool Party
The core musical contributions come from long standing live collaborators Sami El-Enany
lyrically ‘LOJA’ toys with both the fantastical and stark realism
There are sleeping giants in Track 2’s ‘Best Night’ and the final song on the album
The novelty of a new city afforded Weeks the opportunity to romanticise his present and re-evaluate his past
The first live performances in over a year will be at London’s Copeland Gallery this June
Weeks will preview music from ‘LOJA’ alongside an exhibition of the prints and drawings that are the accompanying visual aspect of the album
“The great change in our lives was that we left London and moved to Lisbon
and the record definitely has elements of being a love letter to the place that we now call home
But I think the move provided a stirring of the waters
It threw up an awful lot of stuff and it gave us perspective and hindsight because suddenly there was distance
You can re-evaluate the things you were too close to
those things that there was no point spending time thinking about because it was the day-to-day bubble you were in.”

Teresinha Carteiras Bolhão stands out as a striking example of how interior architecture and design philosophy merge
offering an unforgettable aesthetic experience beyond shopping
Recognising the importance of making a good first impression
Teresinha Carteiras Bolhão uses innovative and expressive elements in its architectural design
providing an unforgettable experience for customers entering the interior
attracting customers’ attention and allowing them to perceive the depth of the shopping area
The periscope trick used in this design by Anarchlab Architecture Office in Mercado do Bolhão makes the interior architecture of the store more impressive
creating an eye-catching sense of depth at first glance
The anamorphic design technique makes the perception process of the brand logo in the form of a large letter “T” at the entrance of the store unique
this logo is only clearly visible from the position and angle in which they are at that moment
This unique approach strongly reflects the brand’s identity and design approach
while at the same time increasing visitors’ curiosity and enriching their shopping experience
a shop identified with a large letter “T”
but also a striking example of how architectural design creates interaction and perception into an experience
This building offers its customers an artistic design experience as soon as they enter the interior
demonstrating the emotional impact and aesthetic value of architecture

will publish its first list in spring 2020
which is currently up year-to-date and we’re discussing new ways to refresh the books and be innovative with a brand that began all the way back in 1937
We are especially excited about publishing Dr
A core part of our strategy is to be a house that publishes and celebrates diverse voices and stories
we will launch the inaugural list of our Make Me a World imprint
award-winning author and artist and son of the late acclaimed author Walter Dean Myers
Jen: At Penguin Young Readers we believe that every child deserves books
and deserves to see themselves in those books
This belief is reflected in the books we publish and in how those books are distributed
a new imprint dedicated to centering stories from the margins
with a goal of uniting an inclusive community of authors
and readers to celebrate stories that reflect the richness of our world
a celebration of African-American fathers and daughters
We are also committed to distributing books to as many communities as possible
And we are determined to impact the book deserts we see in the U.S.
places where kids have no bookstores or libraries
and in doing so we are committed to creating future readers for our adult colleagues
Another top priority for us is the middle-grade graphic novel and illustrated novel market
We’ve had tremendous success in this space with Max Brallier’s bestselling The Last Kids on Earth series
which is being adapted for Netflix this fall
And we are continuing to pump this market with a growing list of graphic novels for middle grade and YA readers
including a new graphic novel from Newbery honor winner Victoria Jamieson in the spring
we are seeing terrific growth in the preschool market as both parents and educators focus on the importance of early childhood literacy
This gives us huge opportunity to grow new characters and titles but also gives us a chance to revisit the classics (such as Corduroy
The Little Engine That Could and Llama Llama)
We’ve had massive success with our expanded line of Very Hungry Caterpillar books
such as Love From The Very Hungry Caterpillar
I Love Dad with The Very Hungry Caterpillar
and I Love Mom with The Very Hungry Caterpillar
Another trend we are seeing is a renewed interested in the printed book, as children become more overscheduled and as parents and teachers worry about too much screen time. Our picture book sales are particularly robust. Studies have shown that parents and educators have an increased focus on teaching young children kindness and empathy
and we’ve seen this reflected in our strong sales for books such as The Rabbit Listened
Humorous picture books also continue to be popular
and The Day the Crayons Quit consistently topping the bestseller lists
We are feeding this trend with a new Crayons book coming this fall—The Crayons’ Christmas
How can we inspire children to become lifelong readers
Jen: Studies show that reading to your child as an infant has a significant positive impact on their cognitive abilities and vocabulary
and will instill in them a love of reading
we continue to build upon Penguin Young Readers’ robust and established list of engaging and developmentally appropriate books for our youngest readers
Barbara: I am a firm believer that the entry point to reading can and should be anything that attracts a child to it—be it simply having books in the home that spark their curiosity
their excitement over finding a book that features their favorite Disney princess
or the empowered feeling that comes from being able to read Green Eggs and Ham solo because of the easy rhyme and repetition
the specific entry point isn’t important—what is important is that they enjoy the experience
and that it becomes a part of the fabric of their lives
I had a job as a page at my local library in Eastchester
While my real responsibility was to shelve the books
I always ended up being a delinquent worker—sneaking into the children’s section to find a seat on the floor to read the books I loved
I entered the publishing world on the adult side in publicity and marketing
I made the decision that children’s was the place for me because of the real possibility of introducing young people to books they will love forever and even share with their own children and grandchildren one day
as a marketplace it has always been very appealing to me because you need to reach not only the reader
It makes it more complex and all the more rewarding
Jen: We have the best jobs in the world
We are able to make something that is both fun and instrumental
both vibrant and educational and that both parents and children think was made JUST for them
we are in a time when there is so much appetite for new and inventive storytelling
it is truly the best time to be in children’s books
