Stage 16 profile of the 2024 Vuelta a Espana
Nestling at the foot of the Lagos de Covadonga climb there’s an important pilgrimage site and basilica church
built in commemoration of the battle fought there in 718 AD that is viewed as the starting point of the centuries-long military Reconquista [reconquest] of Spain
this scenario bears a striking similarity to the situation before the 2021 Vuelta Covadonga stage
Roglič launched a devastating long-distance breakaway alongside Ineos Egan Bernal some 60 kilometres before the Covadonga summit
Having dispatched Bernal with 7.5 kilometres to go
Roglič soloed to victory and not only regained the red jersey he’d ceded to non-GC threat Odd Christian Eiking a week earlier and 1,200 kilometres distant
on the southern side of Spain: By the time he reached the rainsoaked summit of Covadonga
his reconquista of the Vuelta was all but complete and he'd effectively won the race outright
But if Eiking had held onto the leader's jersey much longer than expected
just as O’Connor has done this time round
that’s as far as the similarities go
O’Connor is a recognised GC challenger
and every prediction so far that Ben O’Connor will irrevocably lose red - at Sierra Nevada on stage 9
at Ancares on stage 13 and at Cuitu Negru on stage 15 - has proved to be radically inaccurate
This brings the 2024 Vuelta to stage 16 and its 23rd ascent of Lagos de Covadonga and where hopes are high amidst Roglič fans and his team that the Slovenian will once again
deliver a knock-out verdict in the overall classification
history would certainly be on Roglič's side in terms of taking the final victory
In five of the last six occasions that Covadonga has been tackled by the Vuelta
the leader of the race at its summit has - in keeping with the urban legend about Covadonga's ability to definitively decide the Vuelta overall - also gone on to be the outright winner
Simon Yates was in red at Covadonga and went on to triumph overall
with Nairo Quintana (also the stage winner)
2014 with Alberto Contador and 2010 with Vincenzo Nibali
The only exception in the last half dozen ascents was Joaquim Rodriguez in 2012
leading the Vuelta at Covadonga but then ambushed in dramatic fashion by Contador at Fuente De a few days later
Yet if Roglič sounded cautious about his chances of success this week in his rest day press confidence
and not only because of his own uneven climbing performances so far in the 2024 race
Like the wild wolves that have famously roamed across much of the area for centuries
the stage 16 summit finish of the Lagos de Covadonga has developed a well-earned reputation for being a tough
with a fierce bite if approached too confidently
That’s because Lagos de Covadonga might have lost its unofficial status as Spain’s hardest climb in 1999 when the even more demanding road up the nearby Angliru was tarmacked and then quickly introduced into the Vuelta route
Covadongac certainly lacks the side-of-a-house steepness of the Angliru and it is well-tarmacked throughout and never excessively narrow
But its wildly varying gradients still make the winding ascent to the twin lakes of Enol and Encina at Lagos summit extraordinarily hard to tackle.
this is the first time the road really starts to climb
Then there’s the Huesera [which translates somewhat ominously as the bonesetter] the hardest part of the climb with gradients of around 15 per cent and even 20 per cent
This is almost equally difficult as the Huesera
and comes just before the climb’s final three rollercoaster kilometres of flat and descent
leading to the last little kick up to the finish
is not so much its gradients in themselves as the climb’s changes in degrees of difficulty
others ease back to being virtually flat or briefly head downhill
Unlike more brutally hard ascents like the Angliru where the strategy boils down to hitting as low a gear as possible and praying you’ll get up it without cracking
Lagos de Covadonga’s near-constant changes of pace make it very tricky to calculate your effort
although Covadonga has proved impressively accurate at providing indicators as to the outright winner in the past
the gaps between the favourites have not always been large
On the third week stage of the 2018 Vuelta
there were just five seconds between Yates and the slowest of his main challengers
Quintana’s advantage on Chris Froome
Froome and Contador were separated by an equally paltry 12 seconds
the one exception to these minimal gaps was provided by Roglič himself in 2021
whose winning margin of 1:35 on his closest pursuer was nine seconds faster than the previous record of 1987
surely points to another of Covadonga's attractions
all but doomed to create a lone breakaway winner it is so hard
on the Covadonga all sorts of outcomes are possible - including
a time loss against his rivals for the man who dominated Covadonga so convincingly in 2021
Lagos de Covadonga’s status in the Vuelta is not just about who wins the race outright
it also represented a landmark in the Vuelta’s history as an entity
after years of declining prestige and steadily weakening financial resources
that April’s ascent of Lagos de Covadonga was the first time the Vuelta had its whole last hour broadcast live on TV
This vastly widened media exposure is generally seen as the point when the Vuelta
began its long climb back up to the level of international recognition it enjoys today
So whether Primož Roglič finally takes back la roja and sets himself up for a record-equalling fourth victory or if Ben O’Connor continues his tenacious defence of the red jersey or if yet another scenario emerges on Tuesday
just like Alpe d'Huez in France or the Mortirolo in Italy
Covadonga’s towering significance and prestige in the Vuelta a España will remain more than intact
It already matters too much to the Vuelta for any other outcome to be possible
The Vuelta’s second rest day offers only a temporary respite from the rigours of racing in Asturias
with a very familiar foe waiting for the peloton as they resume
Lagos da Covadonga has become one of the holy sites of Spanish cycling since it was first included on the Vuelta route back in 1983
and this year marks the 23rd time the ascent has featured
Pavel Tonkov and Thibaut Pinot all feature on the star-studded roll of honour
The last rider to inscribe his name here was Primoz Roglic
who all but sealed his third overall victory in 2021 with his daring long-range raid on the road to Lagos da Covadonga
the special category finale is preceded by two category 1 ascents
The Mirador del Fito is followed by the Collada Llomena
which was the scene of Roglic and Egan Bernal’s dramatic escape back in 2021
is that grand finale to Lagos da Covadonga
That average is tempered by a pair of short descents
The rider in red at the summit has every chance of carrying the jersey to Madrid

(ANS – Luanco) – The President of the Principality of Asturias
delivered the title of "Favourite Son of Asturias" to Cardinal Ángel Fernández Artime
in a ceremony whose location and format was agreed upon with the man being honoured
Ángel demonstrates in fact that he does not forget his origins
that he knows well where his people are and that he has firm moorings
safe from vanity and other storms,” he said
neighbours and past pupils who filled the "Maritime Museum of Luanco" and wanted to take a picture with him
Cardinal Ángel Fernández Artime has been able to receive the title of Favourite Son of Asturias
The title of favourite son of Asturias is reserved for people born in the Principality
“who have stood out for their relevant merits
especially for their services on behalf of the autonomous community
and enjoy high prestige and general consideration”
as determined by the Law regulating Honours and Distinctions
the Governing Council agreed to grant this recognition to Fernández Artime “for his important socio-cultural work and services for the benefit of the community”
And if there is one word that Fernández Artime has repeated
The “thank you”s of a “Salesian believer
cardinal” who “contributes what he can from his position”
who on a day like yesterday tried to “create citizenship
aware that others do the same from their position too
“from great and absolute respect”
the Cardinal did not tire of thanking all “those who have made this possible”
He recalled that he could not pick up the title on 8 September
and wanted this tribute to be held in his hometown
in a gesture that reflects his closeness and simplicity
he indicated that this type of act “creates citizenship
each one from their position and with the absolute respect that everyone has for each other”
“Those of us from Luanco are a bit conceited
which is why the neighbours call us 'fatos',” Fernández joked after listening to the praise they heaped on him
while recalling Adrian Barbón’s call announcing the recognition
“The President called me to find out if I would accept the Asturias’ favourite son recognition
He claimed the “humility of recognising that most of what we are we have received
the people who saw me grow up have marked me
which I come to more and more because it draws me here so much
because it is an oasis where I can recharge myself
I am the result of so much that I have received and just a little of what I have done personally,” he said
At a ceremony attended by the Archbishop of Oviedo
later praised the Cardinal’s attitude
the family and the sea behind as a child to study at a Salesian school
collaborated with Archbishop Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires
became Don Bosco's successor and since September 2023
is the seventh Asturian cardinal in history
and “meets all the requirements to be a Favourite Son.”
He praised his “simplicity and closeness”
“All people who have any public responsibility of whatever degree
the exercise of a high office imposes unnecessary arrogance that only serves to distance us from others; to distance us
from the people we must serve.” Barbón added
“We often run the risk of swelling up and being blinded by pride
Therefore it is advisable to have a grounding that confronts us with reality and reconciles us with humility.” The president says that the Cardinal “leads by example”
Ángel demonstrates in fact that he does not forget his origin
Barbón urged people “to recover what unites us
“I think that few things can unite us more than recognising those who make us better through their work
like Cardinal Ángel Fernández Artime
always carry the name of Asturias with them
the place where they put on their first fishermen's sandals,” he said

‘Spectacular win!’ – Soler takes victory on Stage 16 ‘against all odds’
MADRID – Not clay, nor grass. Neither hard court. It’s tennis on sand. In Asturias, in northern Spain, where the Cantabrian Sea transforms the landscape of the seaside with its radical tidal changes, a unique tournament is played annually: the Luanco Beach Tennis Tournament.
when the sea recedes dramatically and makes the sandy soil compact
the seaweed and stones are removed; the metal plates are nailed to delimit the singles court
and the net and the judges’ and players’ chairs are put in place
On the shore are installed bleachers for 2000 spectators
which allow the tennis to be played late at night
the time when the waves break far away from there during summer
In 2023, for its thirty-sixth edition, the tournament featured Frenchman Richard Gasquet and Feliciano López, who was honored after his retirement from professional tennis. The final was won by the Lithuanian Edas Butvilas, who defeated the Spaniard Miguel Avendaño, son of Juan Avendaño, the tournament’s top champion: nine titles in the 1970s and 1980s. Today the trophy is named after him.
“What I remember best is how spectacular it is to play there listening to the sea. The games start very late waiting for the tide to go away. As the night progresses, you worry about finishing early, thinking that at any moment the sea will return,” Jaime Fillol, champion of the 1982 edition, tells CLAY. He beat Spain’s Miguel Mir in the final.
The Chilean explains what a compact sand tennis court is like: “The ball bounces very little, obviously because of the wetness of the court. But it is a firm court. It was good for me, because I did a lot of serve and volley. Also tried to chip and charge a lot”.
Another peculiarity of this unorthodox tennis is the factor of the inclination of the court, which can be key in the development of any match if used strategically.
“When it’s time to run in the direction of the slope, you go for it! The problem is when the rivals throw it to the other side. It’s very difficult to get there running uphill. The event is a very beautiful spectacle. Now the court has grandstands on all four sides, but in my time one part was open next to the waterfront and it was very interesting because the people who passed by there could see the tennis,” Fillol explained.
“Apart from the fact that the food is spectacular in Luanco”, adds the former 14th in the world. This is also a very special feature that foreigners fall in love with. The cider culture is as well enjoyed, and the guests learn how to pour it in the local way: keeping distance between the bottle and the glass so that it is shaken and aired to awake the natural carbonic gas and expand the aroma of the drink.
An important part of Asturian culture. Things of the strange world of tennis on the beach.

Heading into the third and final week means that the battle for the red jersey will be heating up
2024Distance: 181.5kmStart location: LuancoFinish location: Lagos de Covadonga Start time: 12:50 CESTFinish time (approx): 17:18 CEST
Its name refers to the stunningly beautiful Enol and Ercina lakes that glisten just beneath its summit
alongside a thriving ecosystem of wildlife that includes everything from brown bears
Lagos de Covadonga is unique for its near-constant gradients
which demand constant gear changes and make judging your efforts and pacing yourself properly almost as important as having good legs
it might be better described as several steep ramps stitched together
These ramps are notable enough to have been given their own distinct name
and each one of the Mirador del Canonigos section that comes a few kilometres into the climb
and Mirador de la Reina near the summit feature double-digit gradients
With stretches of flat and sometimes even downhill between them
it’s impossible to get into a steady rhythm on this climb
Lagos de Covadonga alone would be enough to make stage 16 a crucial mountain stage
but the presence of a couple of other category one summits earlier makes it one of the hardest stages of the race
as the riders face mostly flat roads upon heading east out of the fishing town of Luanco on the coast of the Cantabrian Sea
but things change direction south to travel inland
a 7km climb with an especially tough second half where the gradient nearly averages 10%
having entered the Redes National Park that neighbours Picos de Europa
they climb up the even harder Collada Llamena
where the steep gradient of over 9% lasts for a longer 7.6km
the sensible ploy on a stage finishing atop such a hard mountain is to save your powder for it
but in 2021 Egan Bernal and Primož Roglič surprised the field by going clear on the Collada Llamena
Roglič eventually going solo to take a big stage win and take firm control of the red jersey
Repeating such a move still feels risky considering the 45km of descending and valley roads between its summit and the start of the Covadonga
time is running out for time to be gained in the GC race
and that there is only one comparatively big mountain stage to come after today’s
this might be the time for such high risk but potentially high reward attacks
Slowly and steadily Primož Roglič (Bora-Hansgrohe) has been chipping away at the time between himself and the red jersey
with only 43 seconds now between the two riders
Roglič has looked stronger in the mountains compared to O'Connor
and with the final summit to Lagos de Covadonga (where Roglič has won before) being a brutally hard climb
It is possible that Roglič could be in red by the end of the stage if O'Connor cannot stick to his wheel the entire way up
One rider who has proven his ability to stick and also beat Roglič in the mountains is Enric Mas (Movistar)
The Spaniard has looked solid so far and could see himself secure a stage win atop this iconic climb
He's 2:23 behind O'Connor and will want to ensure he can stay on the podium before the finish at the end of the week
Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) wants to be on that podium too and he's only 21 seconds away
He's an explosive rider and could try and make an attack on the final climb to take a stage win and knock Mas from third position on the GC
Other GC contenders who are all looking to move up in the rankings and capable of dominating such stages are Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates)
Stage winner Michael Woods (Israel-Premier Tech) could also be a contender for a second stage win for the team
or we may even see riders such as Jay Vine (UAE Team Emirates)
or Louis Meintjes (Intermarché-Wanty) try and go for stage glory
Eddie Dunar (Jayco Alula) is also climbing extremely well following his long-awaited stage win on stage 11 and could be a rider to cross the finish line first
We think Primož Roglič will take the stage win
fearsome mountain passes and a Balkan Grande Partenza

(ANS - Luanco) - The Rector Major of the Salesians
celebrated his first Mass as a Cardinal on All Saints' Day in Luanco
Ever since his ordination to the priesthood in 1987
the inhabitants of Luanco and the other surrounding villages were used to attending Masses celebrated by Fr Á.F
but on this occasion it was something very special
the Vatican flag with the new cardinal's coat of arms was hoisted on the facade of the tower of the Church of Santa María de Luanco
where dozens of parishioners and neighbours awaited him
as well as the Mayor of the town and some councillors
said: "We welcome you seeing that you are the same as always
who wanted to place a new responsibility on your shoulders; we are happy about this availability
We pray that the Holy Father will be able to count on you for the tasks he deems appropriate'
Artime replied: 'I want to thank you for having always received me with great warmth on your part
even if having a Cardinal in the parish can be a little uncomfortable..
I promise you that you will always have the help of a priest who comes here to his home
to help you and to be available for anything you ask of me
the Rector Major thanked the people of Luanco for being present on this solemnity in his village
in the church where he was baptized and where he grew in faith
He also explained the elements of his coat of arms: the Good Shepherd
in reference to the seafaring nature of the town
Then explaining what it means to be a Cardinal
the 10th Successor of Don Bosco clarified: "Ordinary people consider it an honour
and I see this call that the Pope has given me as an opportunity to serve
to help in any way I can and where I am asked
And I remind you that we must continue to ask the Lord to continue to assist the Pope'
he then made reference to the canonized saints
with his usual friendly manner: 'I threaten you that I will come back (smiling)..
because roots are very important to give harmony and life to people'
it was difficult for many to leave the church
and already in the forecourt there were many signs of joy and affection
It was certainly a very important day for the locals
who were happy and proud around 'their cardinal'
And among the many messages and considerations shared by all
one was the most repeated of all: 'He's still the same as ever
Max Poole third on climb into clouds while Ben O'Connor holds lead by slim 5 seconds
with another aggressive and audacious attack on the climb to Lagos de Covadonga
The Spaniard was part of the 17-rider breakaway and then surged away on the steepest part of the 122km climb on stage 16
He distanced Filippo Zana (Jayco-AlUla) and Max Poole (DSM-Firmenich PostNL) in the final seven kilometres and then dived down the rain-soaked
with Poole again the bridesmaid and third at 23 seconds
Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike) was part of the attack but sadly crashed out
Ben O’Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale ) again had to fight to keep the red leader’s jersey but lived to fight another day by just five seconds
The GC contenders marked each carefully until the final seven kilometres
when Mikel Landa (T Rex-Quick-Step) attacked
Primož Roglič (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe)
Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) and David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ) joined him but O’Connor was distanced
he refused to give up and fought for every second
The GC riders finished 3:54 down on Soler but O’Connor finished less than a minute behind them
with a lead of just 5 seconds on Roglič
with Carapaz fourth at 1:46 and Landa fifth at 2:18
Soler had finished third on three different stages in the last week but finally landed his first victory since the 2022 Vuelta
“I’ve attacked a lot but this time I was able to finish it off,” Soler said
very high quality breakaway but I knew that if I got away
Max Poole followed me and the pace was high behind
I haven’t won a lot with this team and so after three years
The steep climb to the finish at Lagos de Covadonga meant that stage 16 was always going to be a dramatic and aggressive day of racing in the Asturias region
Van Aert was involved in a crash even before the stage began in earnest and that only heightened the tension in the peloton
with riders looking to go in the break of the day in the hope of escaping the control of the GC contenders
Astana's Harold Tejada was the first to go off the front when the flag dropped for the start of the 181.5km stage
He was joined by Jack Haig (Bahrain Victorious) and others but they were soon chased down
The elastic eventually snapped after a fast 35km of racing
Isaac Del Toro (UAE Team Emirates) was one of the first to move and an interesting 17-rider attack soon formed
The peloton allowed them to open a two-minute gap
In the move were: Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike)
Jay Vine and Marc Soler (UAE Team Emirates)
William Junior Lecerf (T-Rex-Quick-Step)
Marco Frigo and Matthew Riccitello (Israel-Premier Tech)
Felix Engelhardt and Filippo Zana (Jayco-AlUla)
Simon Guglielmi (Arkéa-B&B Hotels)
Max Poole and Martijn Tusveld (DSM-Firmenich PostNL) and Ion Izagirre (Cofidis)
Riccitello was the best-placed rider in the break but an hour down on O’Connor and so not a threat; the peloton soon let them open a gap and to fight for the stage victory
Other riders like Van Aert and Vine were in a tussle for the mountain’s jersey
while some were key domestiques and adventurers
O'Connor suffered a mechanical problem and briefly dropped off the rear of the peloton with 135 km to race but was quickly back
with his Decathlon AG2R team soon back leading the peloton
Van Aert took 10 points to lift his total to 56
On the descent Van Aert went clear and pushed on alone
perhaps to try to stay away to the next climb
but eventually drafted back to the breakaway
The breakaway riders started the first-category Collada Llomena climb after 118km with a lead of 8:45 on the peloton
Behind the GC group came alive briefly on the Collada Llomena when Movistar upped the pace
Roglič followed him and then Mikel Kanda also tried a move
It was a sign of what was to come on the climb to the finish
Van Aert again won the sprint to score maximum mountain points at the summit of the Collada Llomena
to extend his lead in the mountains competition
Little did he know that just a few kilometres later
he would crash hard and be out of the race
with the German riding on with a huge hole in his shorts
Van Aert managed to avoid them but rode into the rocky hillside at speed
hitting his right knee and other parts of body
He tried to ride on and then bend his knee but was clearly in too much pain
It was a tragic and sad moment for the Belgian
who has battled back from so many crashes and serious injuries
some riders had been dropped from the attack but at least 10 were still fighting for the stage victory
After the descent and confirmation that Van Aert had abandoned the Vuelta due to his injuries
Vine rode for Del Toro and Soler before being distanced and switching his focus to the mountain points
Soler got back on and then even got away with 7km to go
using his power to fight the pull of gravity
Poole and Zana were left to chase together as the visibility reduced and the rain came down but had missed their chance
Soler was away and charging towards victory
The GC attacks began with five kilometres to go
Matteo Cattaneo set up Landa and then he surged away
hands on the drops in a show of pure Landismo
Mas soon reacted and Roglič joined him
O’Connor was suffering and suddenly couldn't hold the wheel
Carapaz and Guadu soon dropped Landa and drove on
with Roglič close to becoming virtual race leader
Carapaz and Mas were happy to help drive the pace in the fight for the podium places in Madrid
O’Connor was able to fight back on the flat section near the edge of Lagos de Covadonga
His red jersey was hanging by a thread but he refused to give up
He drove to the line and stopped the clock 58 seconds down on Roglič
He kept the race lead by just five seconds
Wednesday’s 17th stage to Santander is a chance for a breakaway or sprinters who can handle the mid-stage climbs
It gives O’Connor a chance to recover and prepare for another battle to keep the red jersey
The odds are now against him but he is still in the fight

The Rector Major and his family were accompanied by the members of the General Council, who came from Turin, the Provincial Council of Spain's St James the Greater Province (SSM), his Province of origin, and some 80 Salesians, as well as many friends, neighbours, local inhabitants and close relatives.
“I am convinced that our loved ones are with God, and I want to give this testimony of faith. This certainty gives us profound peace, it gives meaning to our life”, said Fr Á.F. Artime in an emotional homily in which he recalled his mother Isabel, “who, together with my father, always sat in this church, near the altar of Our Lady of Carmel”, thus giving “a final touch to a simple life lived in God”.
During other moments of the Eucharist, the Rector Major thanked the General Council and many Salesians for their presence, in addition to those in the Salesian Family who offered many expressions of affection in various ways.
Gratitude was also emphasised at the end of the Mass by Fr Stefano Martoglio, Vicar of the Rector Major. He also expressed the closeness of the entire Salesian Family to Fr Artime and his family, and pointed out that it is possible to recognise the fruits of this family from the faith of its children; for this reason, he remarked, remembering the Rector Major's mother, "we are celebrating a life well lived to the end", and concluded by asking "Isabel to pray for us".
The religious celebration ended with the sprinkling with holy water in memory of Baptism, and the incensation of the coffin containing the remains of Mrs Isabel Artime.

(ANS - Rome) - At 7 am today, 15 September, Ángel Fernández Fernández, the father of our Rector Major, Fr Ángel Fernández Artime, breathed his last after a long illness. Born in Luanco, Asturias, Spain, on 12 June 1932, he passed away after 89 years of life and 61 years of marriage, by the side of his mother Isabel Artime.
The Rector Major had a deep attachment to his father and recalls with affection some of his significant traits: "Every day, when the weather was good, he would go to see 'his sea'. He started working as a fisherman at the age of 13 and continued until he was 78, accompanying and helping another young fisherman".
"He was a serene and calm man, with qualities that he might have acquired from his many hours spent alone at sea. He was simple, good-hearted, and very much committed to the family, and did not look for anything much to be happy. He was a tireless worker, and I feel like a novice in front of the master, when I compare myself to him," added Don Ángel.
Talking about the spiritual life of his father he stated: "Since he had retired from work, he used to everyday go to the Church, to pay a visit to the Lord and give his daily euro for charity to the poor. He went to Mass almost every day and on 30 August he was also present with me at the Eucharist and at the Novena to the Virgin of Covadonga".
The funeral will take place tomorrow, 16th September, in the parish of Santa Maria of Luanco - Gozòn, and many Salesians from the various Spanish provinces are expected to attend the services.
The Rector Major expresses his deep gratitude to all those close to him in prayer and affection during this difficult time.
