Aena is this year’s official airport host for Passenger Terminal Expo 2025
explores the airport operator’s plans to stay competitive
I started my professional career as a consultant at a specialized economic analysis firm named Solchaga Recio & Asociados
I held the positions of general managing director of the Center for Technological and Industrial Development (CDTI) and executive vice president of Engineering Systems for the Defense of Spain (ISDEFE)
I was also chairman of the Council of the European Space Agency (ESA)
so the aeronautical sector was not unknown to me when I joined Aena a few years later
I was director of wealth and prudential management and director of prudential regulation and public policy
I was also a member of the Parliament of Catalonia for three years
I have been an associate professor in the Department of Economics at Carlos III University of Madrid
I have been chairman of the board of directors and CEO of Aena
I have had the great honor and responsibility of leading Aena
which is 51% owned by the Spanish government and 49% by private shareholders
It is the world’s leading airport operator by passenger numbers
and one of the most important listed companies in terms of market capitalization on the Madrid Stock Exchange
Our company manages 46 airports (plus two heliports) in Spain
my role can be complex due to the public-private duality of our services
I often need to balance competing priorities
stringent regulatory requirements and the company’s duty to the public
After a record-breaking year in 2019 in terms of traffic data and spectacular financial results
we faced two very tough years due to the Covid-19 pandemic
which was not only a global health crisis but also a mobility crisis
We had to adopt immediate and forceful measures overnight to ensure the company’s financial viability while simultaneously maintaining airport operations to provide our public service
“[We were] the first of the major European airport operators to reach pre-pandemic traffic levels”
we resumed activity with maximum acceleration and without operational disruptions
This made us the first of the major European airport operators to reach pre-pandemic traffic levels
we’ve also made significant acquisitions outside our borders
Aena has added a network of 17 Brazilian airports to its management
Aena currently manages 20% of air traffic in this large country
“Aena currently manages 20% of air traffic in [Brazil]”
In a large airport infrastructure management company
especially considering the regulations that must be met in the planning
procurement and execution of major infrastructure works
thanks to the extraordinary investment process undertaken in previous decades – which comprised more than €15bn [US$15.8bn] between 2001 and 2010 in nominal terms – we have sufficient capacity in our infrastructures to serve around 350 million passengers in the Spanish network
Despite the fact that Spain has the second-largest number of international tourists in the world according to the World Economic Forum
our airports currently can handle the demand without any problem
the capacity limits that our strict quality levels demand
we are already working on the first steps to carry out infrastructure expansion projects in the coming years
has two major challenges to focus on in 2025 and in the years beyond – sustainability and future capacity
we have taken significant steps to ensure we are clearly committed to decarbonizing our activity
All these individual sustainability actions and strategies must become aligned and should not hinder the development of the infrastructure that is necessary to meet the growing capacity demands
Aena’s sustainability strategy includes a significant investment
which is close to €750m [US$780m] in the period 2021-2030
One of its main objectives is to achieve carbon neutrality in 2026 as well as net zero in 2030
20 years ahead of the overall sector’s goal
Our Climate Action Plan is structured into three strategic programs: carbon neutrality; sustainable aviation
where we plan to act as a driver for other agents to accelerate their decarbonization; and finally
innovation will be key to overcoming the sector’s greatest challenge – the fight against climate change
The airports of the future will be designed to promote sustainable mobility for employees and travelers
actively collaborating with the supply chain and the community to drive sustainability
They will also have an energy infrastructure that will facilitate self-sufficiency through renewable energies at airport facilities
including electric charging points to supply new electric vehicles as well as supporting biogas plants
the aviation industry has been working for years on developing new solutions that are technologically feasible
economically viable and reach a sufficient production volume
sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) are a feasible green alternative
although the technology is still in its maturing phase
the existing infrastructure is already ready to provide SAF supply to airlines without any negative impact on their day-to-day operations at the airport
electric batteries and hydrogen will probably be essential in the decarbonization of the sector
Future adoption of hydrogen as fuel will require new refueling infrastructure at airports
and significant coordination among various industry players
Aena is conducting pilot tests to accelerate the adaptation of our infrastructure to the use of green hydrogen
Aena has an unwavering commitment to sustainability
which we integrate into our projects through our previously mentioned Climate Action Plan (CAP)
Within the CAP’s electrical energy strategy
the photovoltaic (PV) plan for self-consumption stands out as it involves investments in 10 airports
This strategy also includes introducing LED technology
developing projects for lithium battery and green hydrogen storage and purchasing green energy to cover the total consumption of the airport network
We plan to deploy geothermal energy in the three main airports of the network to achieve sustainable heating and air-conditioning
There is also a progressive plan to renew equipment (boilers)
and implement electric charging points to supply them
“We plan to deploy geothermal energy in the three main airports”
Aena’s traffic forecasts for 2024 estimate a new traffic record
significantly exceeding the 300 million passengers currently hosted by our airports in Spain
These figures and future forecasts underpin the need for a significant investment effort to provide the necessary capacity and implement the associated environmental measures
Although the majority of Aena’s network infrastructure has sufficient capacity to meet the anticipated needs for the coming years
major hub and tourist airports are currently closer to reaching their capacity and quality limits
Aena has already begun actively planning the highly demanding schedule of action that needs to be undertaken across our operations
these new needs must be included in our next regulatory period
these considerations will lead to a new Airport Regulation Document (DORA) approved by the Spanish government
which will become our framework for action in the period 2027-2031
Large airport projects require long maturation periods to materialize
It takes a long time to meet the regulatory requirements involved
Planners must also keep unforeseen events in mind
as such things can unexpectedly disrupt lives around the world
the international environment and the extraordinary dynamism of our society must be considered
Aena follows a rigorous risk analysis process that helps us have high levels of fulfillment in the projects we develop
minimizing delays or cost overruns that would significantly penalize us under our applicable regulatory framework
The need to reach agreements with a range of different stakeholders (airlines
etc.) makes all this a complex process but
air transportation has maintained steady growth
the main agents in the air sector estimated that traffic numbers would double every 15-20 years
Just as air traffic has grown and evolved exponentially over the past 50 years
Aena’s trajectory and transformation in its management model have been extraordinary and very positive
both quantitatively and qualitatively (successfully facing significant challenges in terms of safety
adapting to social and technological evolution and being able to take on the challenges presented
in 1975 passenger traffic in Spain was 37.7 million passengers
This then reached 192.8 million in 2010 and 275.2 million in 2019
making it a record year at that point (average growth of +4.6% per year)
After overcoming the effects of the pandemic
in 2023 we reached a new historic figure with 283.2 million passengers
which we will almost certainly surpass in 2024
significantly exceeding 300 million passengers
This would be in addition to our growing traffic in airports outside Spain
which provides significant strengths and diversification in our activity
This data forced us to review our strategic plan for 2022-2026 in the first months of 2024
setting new objectives and establishing a more ambitious roadmap
technology and digitalization plan for 2021-2026 as a fundamental element to achieve its objectives as an organization in an increasingly competitive and demanding environment
Our vision is to become a benchmark in the use of technology to optimize the customer experience
increase operational efficiency and develop new businesses around sustainable mobility
This plan includes the automation and digitalization of processes focused on the passenger experience and sustainability in various areas: commercial
integration with the environment and a number of smart service management initiatives for optimized operations
which was founded in 2021 by Aena and Aeroporti di Roma
This network helps us seek and identify innovative and sustainable solutions for the global airport sector
AI will probably revolutionize the airport industry
offering significant benefits for external users and internal management
It is a key technology and will become even more so
Aena has begun testing and adopting AI for various use cases at airports
Some examples include a chatbot we call Oli
to answer customer questions; video analysis in terminals and platforms to monitor handling activity; queue monitoring in the terminal building
waiting times and access vehicles; and various systems to make airport climate control more efficient
The results of all these pilot tests are being analyzed in detail and will help us define an internal AI use strategy that we can deploy, if beneficial, for Aena
aviation will have to face numerous uncertainties in the coming years
The evolution of air traffic can be affected by multiple factors
In addition to the existing regulatory measures linked to the fight against climate change
there are uncertainties associated with new potential regulatory restrictions that may lead to changes in fuel prices
our challenges for the coming years may be scary but our sector is prepared to take them on
We have a historically successful track record in managing crises of various kinds and have been able to overcome them relatively quickly

Though Jake Gibb is justifiably getting all the notoriety for being the oldest competitor in Olympic Beach Volleyball history
his male counterparts have him beat on the oldest overall USA team in Tokyo
Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena
started and will end their spectacular careers together
Phil and Nick met through playing against each other in college
they moved to Myrtle Beach to train with a friend – Adam Roberts
they’d drive all night to get to tournaments they had to win in order to pay for food and drinks and slept on the beach instead of forking up prize money for a hotel
they moved to Santa Barbara to dive deeper into the game
Their first career win came at the Austin AVP in 2005
Going from not qualifying to winning in just two years is pretty spectacular
But the world had no idea what force Phil Dalhausser would be on our sport
spent most of his childhood in Daytona Beach
Phil didn’t play volleyball until his senior year of high school
That’s right – both Jake Gibb and Phil
two of the most dominant blockers in the last twenty years in beach volleyball
After beginning his career with Nick on the East Coast and then moving to Santa Barbara, Phil played with a handful of other partners, including our own Dain Blanton
But Phil’s career really picked up when Todd Rogers called him up in 2006
known as The Professor because of his cerebral approach to beach volleyball
won three AVPs in 2005 with partner Sean Scott
the same year Phil and Nick won their first
they both reached heights they hadn’t previously known
Commence one of the greatest partnerships in beach volleyball history
they medaled in all seven events they played and entered the Beijing Games at the top of the Olympic Ranking (OR)
but we all know they rallied back and ended up with the Gold
the FIVB awarded Phil: Best Offensive Player
along with Team of the Year in 2010 when they won nine FIVBs (and five of the six AVPs they played)
dubbed the Thin Beast in fact – just a dominant force in every match he played
They also qualified in 2012 as the highest-ranked USA team (we’ll get to the 3rd-ranked USA team in a minute)
The 2012 London Olympics didn’t hold the same magic as 2008
and Phil and Todd finished with a respectable but disappointing 9th place
So it’s 2013, and Phil and Nick are looking for new partners. Phil picks up Rosie; Nick picks up Theo Brunner
Despite the extremely talented players they paired up with
neither experienced the success they wanted
after trying to make it work with other people
the duo reunited for the first time since 2005
The Thin Beast and Nick the Quick started winning
They qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics and earned 5th place
They’re formidable opponents with incredible chemistry
During the 2020 AVP Champions Cup, Phil and Nick were in full form. Winning two out of three events, they only dropped one match, the very last one to Trevor Crabb and Tri Bourne
They looked like they were having more fun than ever
They were also in phenomenal shape for having been couched for the first time in their adult lives
and for being the oldest team on Tour at 40-years-old a piece
They then entered the 2021 Olympic Qualification Period with poise
even though they were the 3rd-ranked USA team
Didn’t look like it.) It wasn’t long until they settled themselves nicely in qualifying range
and eventually tied Jake and Taylor at the top of the USA’s OR
With Tokyo being Phil’s fourth Olympics and Nick’s 2nd
this duo has more experience and wisdom than nearly any other in the Games
And their history with each other is even more in-depth
Theirs is a nearly two-decade-long friendship
Tokyo 2020 is their last Olympic run; you better believe they’re going for Gold

The Diocese of Lucena defended its name in the wake of what it called ‘baseless’ accusations leveled against its bishop and priests
Dozens held a “prayer rally” outside the apostolic nunciature in Manila on Tuesday against what they claimed were corrupt practices in the diocese
They criticized Bishop Mel Rey Uy’s management of the diocese
especially his handling of clergy’s alleged misdeeds
the diocese said the claims of corruption and scandals were defamatory
“Its purpose is not to pray for but to malign the clergy and the bishop of the diocese with general and baseless accusations,” said its chancellor
Ornedo said that “none” of the supposed prayer rally participants seemed to be from the diocese’s parishes
the diocese promised to handle the issue “with pastoral charity and Christian optimism just as shepherds ought to listen to their flock
“This is an affirmation that the desired renewal of the Church largely depends upon the renewal of the Clergy’s life and ministry,” Ornedo said
The diocese also encouraged its flock “to direct their grievances or concerns through appropriate channels so that the same can be adequately

Nate Lucena says he’s often asked about his style
“I really don’t have a good word for it,” he says
“The best word I can come up with is bohemian—but I hate that word.” In his South City home
is illustrated by a mélange of pieces he’s collected over the years
“It’s definitely not minimal,” he says
Lucena, born in Hawaii and raised in Southern Arkansas, moved to St. Louis for graduate school and decided to stay. He now balances his position as the head of Centene’s analytics and data science department with tending to his plants (mostly cacti; they’re easier to keep alive) and his backyard garden’s herbs (a weekend project as he social distances), and playing with his husky-shepherd-pit mix, Koa.

“I like to keep things around, especially when we’re talking about little objects of art, that are less based on the look and more what that item means to me,” Lucena says, “whether it reminds me of a time or has an aesthetic that really appeals to me.”
He’s a fan of mixing colors and patterns, both in his wardrobe and his spaces. When he buys something, it’s because he’s leaned into the feeling it gives him; he often doesn’t know where it’ll end up in his home.
1. Pants: “They’re ladies’ pants from Old Navy from about seven years ago. I think I paid maybe $6 or $10 for them. I wear them sparingly, but every time I do, it tends to be a big hit.”
2. Shirt: “I don’t even know where that’s from. It’s just soft, loose, and baggy. It’s for sure a part of my uniform in the summertime.”
3. Rug: “It’s one of my prized possessions. It’s pretty big, about 6 by 9. I connected with this woman on Craigslist—I’m a big Craigslist shopper, depending on the item—who curates antiques. That rug is Persian; I think she said from the 1830s. It has really cool botanical elements and periwinkle blue horseheads woven into the corners. When I picked it up, she told me the horsehead motifs are how you can date it.”
4. Framed beetle: “My mom and I vacationed a few years ago in New Orleans together. For some reason she was fixated on buying me a souvenir from our trip; she wanted to be the one to buy it. We went into an antique/resale shop in the French Quarter. I guess there’s a local person who gets these bugs. It’s a species of beetle that’s really beautiful and is native to somewhere in Africa.”
5. Plate: “My grandfather was a pipeline welder and was also in the military. He spent some time in India and Burma. He brought back that tray at some point, probably in the 1940s or 1950s. My grandparents always had it in their house when I was growing up. My grandma gave it to me when I first moved out.”
6. Artwork: “I got it at a silent auction for an organization my friends volunteer with that helps people who were incarcerated after they get out. It’s a print of a collage from local artist Carol Corey. It’s a brain and nervous system on a solid background.”
7. Tables: “I got them several years apart—the back one’s from Target—but they fit together really nicely. My house is actually pretty small, so I find that they work for me much more than a coffee table would.”
8. Scents: “I have a lot of candles around. If I can find it, I really like a scent that is kind of almost like smoky. I don’t like floral, and I don’t really like anything that might smell like potpourri. But anything that kind of smells like charred wood or something like that, I’m pretty into that.”

Coming in as the highest-ranked new Men’s team on the AVP Tour
Nick Lucena and Andy Benesh are poised to take the AVP by storm
With 16 AVP titles and two Olympics to his name
Nick is one of the most well-established and respected men on our beach
The 42-year-old’s vision is unrivaled
likely honed from years as one of the shorter defenders in the world
which helps him dig more balls and consistently sideout
arguably the best beach volleyball player ever
Nick has also been served almost every ball for the last six years
You have to have impeccable vision if you’re getting 95% of the opportunities to score
Has anyone noticed he looks better than ever
Speaking of Andy – his play really impressed me last summer. I named him both the Unofficial Rookie of the Year and Most Improved
and everything was upside down; don’t @ me until you read the two articles
Andy deserved both nods because of his noteworthy 2021 AVP season
He toppled some beach greats in nail-biting matches
partner Billy Allen racked up 4.3 digs per set (4th overall)
Andy and Billy entered the three 2021 tournaments as the 12/10/7 seeds
they made the Semifinals in the final two tournaments of the year
Not bad for someone who’d only played four previous AVP Main Draws
while still playing international tournaments
Depending on which other top teams are playing overseas
Nick and Andy may be well-positioned to make the Finals
the first two new partnerships I’m highlighting are coached by Jordan Cheng
He first made a splash on the AVP in Reid Priddy’s box
but he’s best known for coaching Kelly (Claes) Cheng and Sarah Sponcil to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics
And yes – Kelly’s married name is Cheng
Jordan proved himself as a coach and has added Nick and Andy to his roster
and a new person to learn – you’d think these two would need time to be ready to win
Not a ton of unorthodox play to get used to
Billy Allen is a 6’2″ ball of muscle; Nick is a 6’1″ ball of muscle
Phil Dalhausser is a lean 6’9″; Andy is a lean 6’9″
So the only adjustments will be to personality
Even the teams that are rejoining forces are constantly making those same adjustments
With 1.43 blocks per set and 1 controlled block per set in 2021
Andy is enough of a presence at the net to make a big difference
poised in the back row to dig or run down everything Andy can’t touch
hence his AVP Championships and back-to-back Olympic berths
Young Andy has shown some real ice-water-for-blood moments
winning a 49-serve Freeze 23-21 against John Hyden and Ricardo Santos
That one-hour-37-minute match said a lot about all four athletes’ resilience
but especially the youngest and greenest player on the court
Nick’s decades of wisdom are already rubbing off on Andy
“Nick brings a lot of experience,” Andy says
“in terms of strategy and how to keep composure through the highs and lows of the match
He’s helped me add some skills to my toolset; that’s been really helpful
and I think that brings out my inner competitive spirit
but Nick and Andy have some vital things going for them
Nick is one of the best older guys on Tour; Andy is one of the best newer guys on Tour
I wouldn’t be surprised if Nick helps Andy get his first (of many) AVP wins in 2022

Teresa de Lucena: Reflections on the Trial of a Conversa is the result of a unique collaboration between a translator
and a rabbi who joined forces and their respective talents to tell the story of Teresa de Lucena (1467-1545)
a woman who faced the Spanish Inquisition twice
a nonfiction genre that places an individual at the center of the narrative and then zooms out to create the larger context of her life and times
How old was she when her father fled from Spain
based on Kanner’s translations of the original Inquisition transcripts
and Rabbi Cohen’s insights into Jewish culture
creates an intimate portrait of a conversa in tumultuous times
A Jewish Double Life: Ellen Kanner on Teresa
To understand the times in which Teresa de Lucena lived
Ellen Kanner says one must understand that the Spanish Inquisition
It was launched against Catholics whom the Inquisition suspected of observing either Jewish practices or Muslim practices.” The peak of Spanish antisemitic violence had occurred in 1391
after which Jews converted to Catholicism by the hundreds of thousands to save their lives
was a third-generation Catholic whose grandparents had converted to the faith
Kanner explains that the unintended outcome of this mass coerced conversion was to create a social stratum of “newcomers” comprising Spain’s conversos
which led to class tensions that dovetailed with the Spanish Church’s religious preoccupations
Jews lived as Jews in Spain until their expulsion in 1492 and
Kanner says conversos would have interacted with them
Judaism among the conversos was observed along a spectrum – some who converted became devout Catholics
and some took things from both religious cultures
she could and did interact with the Jewish community and visit its synagogues– but after 1478
“Secrecy in Teresa’s time became a matter of life or death,” Kanner explains
Teresa’s father fled the Iberian Peninsula in 1480 or so
she traveled to Toledo to face the Inquisition and voluntarily confess that she had learned Jewish practices as a child from family members
Her confession was accepted and she rejoined the Catholic fold without punishment or penalty
Teresa de Lucena documents – and the volume is a historical document
consisting of Kanner’s translation of records from Teresa’s 1485 and 1530 trials – she practiced some aspects of Judaism throughout her long life
Four years after the twice-acquitted Teresa passed
a servant delivered testimony to the Inquisition about Teresa’s strange ways
The excerpt reprinted here affords contemporary readers a glimpse into how conversas like Teresa sustained their Jewish connection in secret
As has been pointed out by rabbis and sages
Judaism is not so much about what one believes
While no one will ever know exactly what Teresa believed
Kanner and Zeybekoglu offer tantalizing hints of how she acted
Even the small gesture described in the image above suggests a complex inner life of a Jewish woman separated from us by centuries

On view through 14 October at Plaza del Rey in San Fernando is the pavilion La Sal, a work of the architects José Rodríguez Lucena and Carlos Montes González. After ¡Qué faena(r)!, the project carried out for the city of Vigo (Pontevedra)
San Fernando (Cádiz) presents the second of the two winners of the 2024 TAC
a program of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Agenda (MIVAU) and Fundación Arquia
Drawing inspiration from Cádiz’s history of salt production
the temporary pavilion is an invitation to reflect on the regeneration of the territory and urban space through elements linked to the area’s traditional economy
It also proposes better management of the province’s most abundant and sustainable natural resources
The composition of wood and steel with a mound of salt indeed speaks of the value of the vernacular
and of the need to seek sustainable alternatives to industrial building materials

Quezon – It was a hot Monday afternoon yet Reymark Namli
They were barefooted as they walked along Quezon Avenue
“The jeepney drivers usually get mad at us for hitching
Basil is in charge of handing envelopes to the passengers while I play music using my tambol
I would sing to entertain them,” Reymark told Bulatlat in an interview
The usually busy Quezon Avenue has been a home to both the boys every weekend
They would hitch a ride with a jeepney from their community in Dalahican to reach the town proper of the city

also known as “sea gypsies,” are indigenous people from the islands of Mindanao
They are known to have a rich maritime heritage
they have traversed the water of Sulu and lived nomadically
the long-running armed conflict in Mindanao has displaced them

The houses are elevated above the ground on sturdy wooden stilts or posts
The Badjao arrived in Lucena City in 1994 and started forming a community in the villages of Dalahican and Barra
According to the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO)
there are 91 families in Dalahican and 66 families living in Barra
said their family has been living in Lucena City for five years and that they plan to stay here longer because they feel safe
They came from Zamboanga del Sur aboard a ship
Others took roll-on roll-off ships to reach Luzon
Life there was good but there were members of Abu Sayyaf who killed our fathers
We just chose to leave our homes,” she said
But Jordan said they were branded as thieves
“We decided to move to Lucena City because according to some of our relatives who are living here it is peaceful here.”

Migrating to a new city proved to be difficult for the Badjao community

Juana’s family initially settled in Batangas before taking a bus to Lucena City and joined the rest of the Badjao community who was already settled in the villages of Dalahican and Barra
They built a house along the shore of Talao-Talao and this was where she gave birth to her children

They also faced constant discrimination in their attempts at integrating to the mainstream life of Lucena City
Begging is the only means I see to feed my children without resorting to doing bad things such as stealing.”
Juana strived to send her children and grandchildren to school
was able to finish elementary school at 17 years old
she would join her mother in begging while singing in the streets
I wanted to pursue high school and eventually work at a mall but I am afraid to study further
I might not be able to cope with the projects and requirements,” Tin said
Non-profit organizations have been collaborating with the local government of Lucena to uplift the lives of the Badjao through a community-based approach
where inclusion strategies are integrated in the planning and policy making
“But I want a different future for my grandchildren
and count so they will not end up like me,” said Marissa Quansa
One of her grandchildren is now a first grader in the Dalahican Elementary School
Meanwhile, Jordan said that she intends to support her son until he finishes higher education. “And the day would come that he will no longer beg in the street.” (JJE, RVO)
