games and has done so on the back of top-to-bottom excellent pitching performances I thought about awarding the entire pitching staff But for the last week of April I’ve got to award it to one pitcher in particular: Seth Lugo Lugo started two games over the last week—yesterday against the Tampa Bay Rays and April 25 against the Houston Astros Lugo had maybe the best game of his career: 8 shutout innings with only four baserunners allowed Lugo went 6 strong innings with two earned runs and five strikeouts against zero walks He debuted as a 26-year-old for the New York Mets in 2016 where he started some games and pitched out of the pen for the rest when he threw 146.1 innings for the Padres Kansas City saw even more late-blooming potential and a sweet spot in the free agent market and signed him to a two-year deal with a player option Lugo was selected to his first All-Star Game and was the Cy Young runner up One of the things I’m trying to do more of this year is to sit back and enjoy the good baseball is going to end up an all-time great and is at the height of his powers especially since Royals fans sat through so much bad pitching over the years and against the Rays Statcast picked up 10 different pitch types from him only two of which were used more than one fifth of the time Lugo is central to the Royals’ hope of winning the AL Central and going back to the playoffs And who knows—maybe he’ll even win the Cy Young this year Share on FacebookShare on X (formerly Twitter)Share on PinterestShare on LinkedInERIE PA (WBNG) -- After opening the series at Erie the Royals’ 2-0 victory over the Astros in the series opener at Kauffman Stadium walked one and needed just 94 pitches to record 24 outs Lugo’s effectiveness resulted in a one hour that was probably the best game I’ve seen him pitch Right from the get-go it looked like he was incredibly sharp they made him work a little bit there towards the end and needed some good defense there to get out of that but the crispness of his pitches and efficiency he was working with was incredible.” Lugo worked his nine-pitch mix to his advantage once again attacking all parts of the zone with varying speeds and movement He recorded two strikeouts with his cutter I would always look back at the scoreboard and see what pitch he was throwing,” said Drew Waters he’s got like 13 pitches to keep guys center of Roberto Lugo’s “Orange and Black” exhibition at the Princeton University Art Museum’s Art@Bainbridge gallery I attended Lugo’s artist and curator conversation at Bainbridge.  The exhibition centers pottery’s inherent capacity for storytelling and bridging connections between the past and present and college students have been inspired by the collection’s ability to blend traditional Greek pottery with modern storytelling using Lugo’s work as examples for their classes.  Lugo spoke about his resonance with the colors orange and black They didn’t represent the Princeton Tigers Growing up in a North Philadelphia neighborhood where many friends and family members were impacted by incarceration And something else: ancient Greek pottery.  this blend of passion for social injustice and interest in the traditions of ancient Greek ceramics offers a glimpse into his childhood This artistic transparency was most evident in “What Had Happened Was: The Path.” In this work of storytelling abolitionist Harriet Tubman is pictured leading a group of enslaved people around the entire vase symbolizing the often circular struggle for freedom compelling them to confront the work and its message Lugo honors previous and current generations that have fought for freedom.  Visually tracing the figures running across the vase While the vase’s spherical shape celebrates the perseverance of abolitionists it also evokes the idea that resistance and the pursuit of freedom are a perpetual struggle As one traces their eyes across the pottery the forward movement takes on a certain stillness forcing the observer to grapple with the complex and often uncertain nature of progress and change.   Lugo further highlights African American resilience in his piece “What Had Happened Was: Ruby Bridges,” which depicts a young Ruby Bridges being escorted by her mother and U.S marshals to her first day at a desegregated elementary school taking advantage of the physical advantages of pottery Lugo portrays a turbulent path across the vase through protesters angrily opposing desegregation and holding degrading signs.  the moderator of the conversation with Lugo “the focus is primarily on Ruby’s body” and “what constitutes her own personhood and experience of the world as a person of color.” Lugo finds imaginative ways to weave his memories and values into his works In “The Life and Times of Dragon Clemente,” Lugo transforms the association of graffiti art with vandalism then maybe offer more art classes in the area for people to have access to express themselves in a way that they’re doing through graffiti.” He then added “If people are fed up with discussions on race and racism then let’s create a more just world … if you don’t like it you have to actually do something about it You can’t just bitch about the fact that it exists Lugo’s work remolds art into community healing and an instrument of social change pick up some violins … See because those who draw good Lugo’s work innovates modern ceramics by tapping into its ancient purpose as a receptacle for human history Lugo’s ceramics’ overarching themes of social justice and resonating depictions of everyday life record stories simultaneously educating and confronting the observer.  After visiting Lugo’s “Orange and Black” exhibition I’ve found myself paying more attention to the objects that interact with daily life contemplating the essential role art plays in relationships Introduced to an entirely new form of creative expression Lugo has also inspired me to think beyond the functionality of our cups Lugo stands out not only for his impressive craftsmanship and attention to detail but also for the meanings intertwined with every emblem and character painted and shaped onto his works.  seeing each vase not as a product of the old or the new but instead as the human qualities Lugo’s deft weaving of ancient Greek history with contemporary examples of oppression and change demands both artistic reflection and a personal transformation from the viewer.  “Orange and Black” is currently on view for free at Art@Bainbridge on Nassau Street until July 6 Irene Kim is a As he lay there, Lugo was scared. It was December 2014. Four months before this, Michael Brown had been shot and killed by a police officer in Ferguson my life can be taken from me,’” Lugo recalled “I wondered if I was going to wind up like Mike Brown.” He thinks he was stopped because police saw an Afro-Latino Puerto Rican man Lugo graduated with his bachelor’s degree in fine arts from the Kansas City Art Institute in 2012 It was at the Missouri school that Lugo began putting portraits of himself and other Black and Latino faces on his pottery It was to make a statement that he deserved to belong in art spaces he was constantly stopped by people — other students and faculty members usually white — wanting him to show his student ID “He wanted me to tell him the names of my professors to prove I really was a student.” Lugo was walking into a building behind another student who managed to use his body to block Lugo from entering “I had to press my student ID against the glass so he could see I had the right to be there,” he said Lugo had no way of seeing what was in store for him said he never had any formal art classes in all his years in Philadelphia public schools The only art he knew about were the towering murals of Black heroes on city walls His first artwork was the graffiti he spray-painted in middle school “I put my hands on their hands,” he told The Inquirer which says it is the largest gathering of visual art education professionals in the world Five years after the police dog scoured through his van designed with both ancient Greek and Chinese motifs He placed a portrait of Michael Brown in his high school graduation cap on one side The title of the artwork is: Do you know how hard it is to get a black man through high school It’s taken from a quote from Brown’s mother Much of Lugo’s pottery uses the centuries-old porcelain and clay traditions from Europe and Asia The European pottery was often used to depict royalty He often pairs Black or Latino historical figures with rappers like Notorious B.I.G He takes a traditional “royal” style of pottery making then mixes in dashes of hip-hop culture and graffiti “These are stories worthy of being documented in a format that can last thousands of years,” he said Lugo began making pottery that evoked ancient Greek forms years ago long before the Princeton museum called to suggest he sort through its collection of 2,500-year-old Greek pottery His works are being shown next to Greek pots dating to the fifth century BCE The vases from antiquity are displayed behind glass barriers The ancient Greek vases might show Greek men in sporting events while one of Lugo’s vases shows Philly men playing basketball They also show men interacting with police: One officer is shown in riot gear One Lugo vase shows baseball great Roberto Clemente working in a sugarcane field as a child in Puerto Rico. Another captures Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla-Pérez associate curator of ancient Mediterranean art at the Princeton University Art Museum “What’s exciting about his work is he’s creatively adapting and playing with these motifs with the archaic and classical tropes in Greek ceramics but using and adapting them to tell his own story in modern-day America,” she said “He’s showing how [this ancient medium] can be used to tell stories of people who are otherwise underrepresented.” Please enable JS and disable any ad blocker Ragans 4th in AL Cy Young votingNovember 21st KANSAS CITY -- The Royals’ remarkable turnaround from 56-106 in 2023 to 86-76 and a postseason berth in ’24 was fueled by their starting pitching.
