The first United Airlines flight of the third summer season linking Malaga with New York is now on its way to Newark Airport
the Boeing 757-200 landed on the Costa del Sol
of which 16 are United Polaris business class beds
in which Malaga will be linked with a direct flight to New York every day of the week
This is the only connection between the whole of Andalucía and the United States
At check-in counter 318 early Friday morning
passengers who were to travel with United Airlines checked in their luggage in a season opener where there was no celebration of any kind
considering that this is already an established operation
For many of them it was their first trip to the Big Apple
but they are all celebrating this connection
a route that the tourism sector and those in charge of the different administrations insist that they hope to keep operational all year round as soon as possible
this decision will be taken by the airline depending on the evolution and records of this new season
which this summer will fly from Bilbao and Palma de Mallorca
This is in line with the boom in the arrival of American tourists on the Costa del Sol
even during the period when Malaga does not have direct flights to New York
It is worth remembering that last year the United States became the sixth most important market for hotels and flats in the province
The head of sales of this American company in Spain
announced a few days ago that 51,000 seats have been put on sale
a figure that represents 280 per cent more than those offered in 2023 and in 2024

female doctors in Malaga outnumber their male colleagues
According to the latest Andalucian Council of Medical Associations data
Malaga has 5,328 registered female doctors
The figures also show a clear trend in where male and female doctors choose to work
Around 67 per cent of female doctors work in the public sector
Only 2 per cent split their time between both sectors
Men, on the other hand, are more active in private clinics
Just 42 per cent of male doctors work in public healthcare
and the private healthcare sector is growing fast
One in three doctors in the province now works in private healthcare
That figure rises even higher when including those who combine both sectors
The report also shows that female doctors are more likely to choose clinical specialities
while men still dominate in surgical roles
With the number of working women in medicine rising fast
medical leaders are calling for better work-life balance support for female doctors
especially during pregnancy and breastfeeding
This trend reflects a broader shift across Andalucia
but Malaga continues to lead the way in many areas
including private healthcare growth and the overall number of active doctors

Easter week in Málaga is one of the most spectacular in Spain and has been declared a Festival of International Tourist Interest
The so-called "men of the throne" carry their imposing giant thrones on their shoulders in a massive street procession
Jesús Cautivo (The Captive of Málaga) is the main devotional attraction that parades through the streets on Easter Monday and is the most revered image in the province
This work by sculptor José Gabriel Martín Simón draws over a million people each year into the streets of the capital of the Costa del Sol
Associations known as cofradías or "brotherhoods" are a strong tradition in Spain
many of which date back to the Middle Ages
A court in Malaga has sentenced the Serbian man who killed a sex worker by stabbing and pushing her from a sixth-floor balcony in the city's Teatinos neighbourhood to 13 years in prison
The defendant said that he had been under the influence of alcohol and drugs at the time of the incident
and although he claimed to have already served two years for a crime he had not committed
the man began to behave in a particularly violent and aggressive manner when the woman arrived in his flat
She also tried to get out of his reach by sitting on the ledge of the flat's window balcony
After hitting and stabbing her under the jaw
the man tried to lift and throw her from the balcony
as she clung to the ledge with all her strength
his considerably larger body size (standing almost two metres tall and height and weighing 120kg) and strength meant that she could do little to defend herself and finally he managed to push her over the edge
She died almost instantly on impact with the ground
in addition to claiming that he had been under the influence of alcohol and drugs
said that he believed that the victim had conspired with others to rob him
which is why he did not move away from the door of the house after grabbing a knife
He said he thought that the woman was in the room even when the police arrested him
The sentence includes eight years of probation once he leaves prison
as well as compensation of 90,000 euros for the victim's daughter
Every cloud has a silver lining and even though last week's 1 May bank holiday was cooler than tourists would have wanted it to be
the rainfall that fell from Wednesday to Friday last week brought a new increase in water levels in Malaga province's reservoirs
as irrigation and livestock received extra supplies
According to the director of Malaga's Aemet weather centre
the isolated cold storm (abbreviated as BFA in Spanish) that was active in the province last week left significant discharges in the first couple of days of May
Up to 60mm of rain was collected in El Juanar
as estimated by various official and unofficial rain gauge networks
Important gains were also recorded in: Casares (38mm); Manilva (31); Estepona (29); Jubrique (26); Pilones (25); Benahavís (24); Guadalmina and Pujerra (23) Los Reales (20) and El Burgo (19)
Between 10 and 20mm were recorded in many other areas
the Hidrosur network of the Junta de Andalucía announced that
In the Guadalmina dam (45) and the Guadalmansa dam (43)
which flow into the La Concepción reservoir - the main source of supply for the western Costa del Sol
Cortes de la Frontera (74mm) and Gaucín (60) stand out
"These two weather stations have already recorded more than 700mm so far this year." As a reference
30mm have been recorded at the airport and 38 at the meteorological centre in El Cónsul
the records of the Junta de Andalucía's's Hidrosur network include more than 70mm in Alfarnatejo; 67 in Cortes de la Frontera; 59 on the Guadiaro river; 55 in Villanueva de la Concepción and 52 at the Guadalmansa diversion dam
The accumulations have once again been reflected in reservoir levels
The overall level of resources on Friday 2 May was 61.5%
reservoirs as a whole have gained 2 million cubic metres compared to the previous week
La Concepción near Marbella is practically full - something that will be officially confirmed once the runoffs are added to the calculations
which is more than enough water for the upcoming summer and until the beginning of next year
There is also good news from the inland areas of the province
The reservoirs of the Guadalhorce system have continued to rise
despite the fact that the heat is beginning to set in and consumption is increasing
The Guadalteba - the largest - is almost at 52.7%
there are the Casasola and El Limonero reservoirs
Although their function is different from that of other reservoirs (they serve mainly to prevent flooding in Malaga)
which supplies the eastern part of the province and the Axarquia
Although it hardly rained in that area last week
the run-off around the Guaro river would still allow it to exceed half its capacity for the first time (50.2%
So Malaga's largest reservoir has plenty of water to supply domestic consumption for years to come and the Junta de Andalucía has also allowed irrigation supplies to be increased
"We departed from Madrid about 25 minutes before the catenary sparked and the train suddenly stopped
We are in the middle of nowhere and we are waiting for them to find us another train." This was the story of Héctor
a passenger on the Madrid-Malaga high-speed AVE train that left the Spanish capital's Atocha station at 8.55pm on Sunday and was due to arrive on the Costa del Sol before midnight
as described by minister of transport and sustainable mobility Óscar Puente
prevented the completion of this and multiple other journeys
Héctor was one of the thousands of passengers who had an unpleasant journey home on Sunday
yet still managed to get to their destination
Four cable thefts at different points on the Madrid-Seville high-speed line left more than 10,000 passengers without transport
the situation found others waiting at the station
"We have been told that another train is coming
but we don't know when; we don't have much more information," said Héctor from one of the halted trains last night
According to data from Spain's state railway operator Renfe
there are more than 10,000 passengers affected throughout Spain this morning
There have been 30 trains paralysed or delayed
several of them with departure from or arrival in Malaga
Considering that the sabotage took place at the end of a long holiday weekend
the number of passengers returning home on Sunday evening was considerably higher than usual
"Due to the cable theft in the province of Toledo
trains departing from Andalucía before 8am this Monday will be affected by considerable delays," said Renfe
the theft took place on the high-speed line linking Madrid-Seville
somewhere between the towns of Mora and Urda in Toledo
The situation has caused delays and stoppages in high-speed and long- and medium-distance trains
as reported by Renfe and Adif (Spain's state railway infrastructure company) on social media
Many of the trains arrived at Atocha and Santa Justa stations early today
increasing station staff and working to mobilise the largest number of trains in these degraded circulation conditions," he explained in a message he posted on X (formerly Twitter)
Puente assured that the Guardia Civil is already investigating the case
there are four cable thefts at different points within a radius of 10 kilometres
He described these tools as "the security systems of the line"
"The effect this will have on the trains that still have to run today is going to be very serious
We will barely have two hours from when we finish today to repair it," he said last night on the social media platform X
Adif said that "the cable cuts and theft have occurred in the municipalities of Los Yebenes (kilometre points 92/850 and 93/600) and Manzaneque (kilometre points 101/400 and 102/200)
affecting the line's signalling installations"
which is the reason for the delays in the service
These events are very serious," he reiterated
Madrid-Seville and Seville-Madrid trains have suffered considerable delays
as they have not been able to run at their usual speed
while others were stopped altogether during the early hours of the morning
Renfe said that all trains would arrive at their destination
"so no alternative transport would be necessary"
"We regret the inconvenience caused by this cable theft and thank you for your patience and understanding."
there will be one-hour delays in the departure of the high-speed trains on the Madrid-Seville and Madrid-Toledo lines
This measure is necessary for the repair works in the early hours of the morning
Renfe's president said that the last scheduled high-speed train departures from Atocha station have been cancelled "to make room for the arrival of the backed-up trains"
an Iryo train "has become snagged in the catenary power cables and needs to be cleared
towed and the catenary reinstated in order to restore circulation"
"This is the reason why some trains lost power," said Fernández Heredia
while noting that they are distributing the stock of each train and have warned taxis at the arrival stations
"Having completed the transfer of the Iryo that was halted
we hope that now we can move forward at a faster speed and conclude the operation," read the minister's 3am update
Fernández Heredia stated that Atocha station will remain open and that they were preparing special trains to take affected people to their destinations
The president of Andalucía's regional government
has demanded that the central government offer alternatives to passengers
especially given that the dates of travel are of high importance
"I am very concerned about the situation that is affecting thousands of Renfe passengers
especially on the AVE train that connect Andalucía with Madrid," he said
President of Madrid's regional government Isabel Díaz Ayuso - member of the right-wing PP party - blamed the left-leaning central government for the recent "blackouts and breakdowns"
international embarrassment and damage to the economy"
the left would have been setting fire to the streets from day one
But let no one confuse good sense with indifference
At least ten high-speed trains between Malaga and Madrid (in both directions) were affected this Monday morning by the double incident that happened last night on the high-speed line (LAV) near Toledo : first
with the theft of the cable from the security installations
and then the snagging and dragging of the catenary by a train
State rail infrastructure company Adif is working on the issue and hopes to restore the track this morning
it reports that rail service on the Madrid-south of Spain high-speed line is scheduled to resume "around 9.30am," both from Madrid and from the stations in Málaga
Most of those affected are on the route from María Zambrano to Atocha: five Renfe trains and one Iryo train are currently waiting to depart
taking into account that the carriages are unlikely to be full
it is expected that the impact will affect at least 1,200 passengers
from the Spanish capital to the Costa del Sol
four trains are currently blocked: three Renfe and one Iryo
the trains will be filled to capacity and even double trains will be used to try to get the affected passengers to their destination as quickly as possible
An 81-year-old man died on Saturday 3 May after jumping from his burning flat
located on the eighth floor of a building in the Las Delicias area in Malaga city
The 112 Andalucía emergency services received the first alerts around 6.30am
Witnesses said that smoke was coming out of a flat located on the eighth floor of a building on Calle Trafalgar
They also requested urgent medical assistance for a person who had fallen from the building
National Police and Local Police were all immediately mobilised
the emergency services could only confirm the victim's death
From what the investigators have been able to assess
prompting the man to go to his bedroom window
firefighters confirmed that the victim had been alone in the flat
That the coastal train project along the length of the Costa del Sol would be a profitable infrastructure is beyond doubt
as it would mean having a high-capacity rail service operating in one of the most densely populated areas of Europe
where the only public transport alternative is the bus or taxi
But do we know exactly how much profit such a large investment would generate
The answer can be found in the latest report by Spain's association of construction and concessionaire companies (Seopan)
where the project appears not only as one of the most profitable actions planned at a national level
but also as one of the few where the return is expected to be twice as high as the necessary economic investment
Seopan's study only takes into consideration the ideas that have been planned so far
the renovation and extension of the existing railway line between Malaga and Fuengirola (current C1 of the short-distance Cercanías service) and its extension in two phases: first to Marbella and Estepona
mention some of the most recent ideas: "the possibility of converting the Malaga-Marbella section from the airport to high-speed"
the total estimated investment for this route would amount to 6.7 billion euros
which makes the Costa del Sol rail corridor one of the most expensive works
Seopan highlights that the economic and social benefits of having a railway on the coastline of Malaga and Campo de Gibraltar would double the cost of the works
"These benefits are mainly related to time savings and CO2 emissions reduction
due to the modal shift from car to rail," the document states
95% of the benefits are assessed in terms of improved and reliable journey times; another 3% in terms of environmental and social improvements; and a further 2% in terms of cost savings
The Seopan study also foresees the creation of almost 100,000 direct and indirect jobs (99,241
a gross value added (GVA) of 7.2 billion is expected
This concept is a macroeconomic measure that serves to evaluate economic activity and productivity in the territory
As well as a reduction of 74.51 million tonnes of gas emissions
operating costs of 169 million would be added to the necessary investment
resulting in an internal rate of return (IRR
it would be a highly profitable project for a private investor
this report dates from the middle of last year and therefore does not yet take into account the central government's Ministry of Transport latest developments
minister Óscar Puente and his team have taken the lead in the technical and administrative promotion of this infrastructure
Puente's idea is to create a coastal railway corridor linking the entire coastline of the Costa del Sol
The contract is about to be signed with the consultancy firm that was selected in the tender on 17 March
when the contracting board proposed the winning bid by the engineering firm WSP SPAIN-APIA
Its economic proposal is almost 820,000 euros
400,000 euros less than the base estimated by the Ministry (1.2 million euros)
The planned timeframe will be the same as in the tender documents
Now it is time to draw up the aforementioned feasibility study
which will be the first step in the long formal process so that
According to the "tentative schedule" of the work
ministry technicians have laid out three phases
the first key milestone of the feasibility study will take place toward the end of phase I
in January 2026 (just over six months from now)
the "initial alternatives study" will be released
where (physically) and in what form (Cercanías
high-performance or a mix) could the platform for the railway tracks from Nerja to Malaga
The forecast coincides with the announcement made by Óscar Puente
we hope to have the route of the coastal train clear." The initial idea of the ministerial technicians is to follow
which is a reserved space located on both sides of the road
The second phase includes a more detailed analysis of the alternatives in the different sections into which the action has been divided (five in total)
It will also examine in depth the areas and operating scenarios of the proposed alternatives
Phase III includes quality control and supporting formalities
and will be carried out in parallel to the previous two phases
The feasibility study should be ready for final approval in November 2026
with a conclusions document and a summary format for public presentation
after the fire at La Deriva restaurant in Soho
giving way to a new and more varied culinary offer while still maintaining a terrace on Muelle Uno where drinks and cocktails have always been the mainstay
decided not long after the work on the damaged restaurant began
to bring the type of food demanded by the public in La Deriva to this space
who until then had been the head chef of the Japanese restaurant Ta-kumi in Malaga
Japanese-influenced dishes were served as an accompaniment to the cocktails
The arrival of Miguel Mayor to take over the kitchen at Cávala has also meant that Cobalto 15 now has a new culinary proposal focused more on the sharing style of cuisine and not exempt from traditional Malaga flavours
which is served here with slices of aubergine in tempura and seasoned with sugar cane honey
some very juicy and crunchy croquettes or the classic Russian salad version of Miguel and which includes an air of lemon that balances the rest of the flavours and acts as a common thread between them
a cuisine with national roots and designed to be shared by the customer
Creativity and tradition come together in a menu of casual cuisine with an edgy air aimed at a younger public and not at all tied to conventional opening hours
which is why at Cobalto 15 the kitchen does not close for the entire opening hours of the establishment
Another novelty that may attract the most attention is closely related to the average price of a lunch or dinner
around 30 euros if you are careful with the drinks and cocktails
The service still needs further adjustment to the new philosophy that Antonio García has embodied in Cobalto 15
is long and it is very noticeable in the new gastronomic venture of this restaurant
A potato cake with a very fine texture in the mouth but with a strong flavour forms the base of a beef tartar
A salad that stands out for its correct serving temperature
a very balanced flavour of all its ingredients
especially that of the crab and a very ethereal foam
and with a thin base and crispy onion piled on top of the loin
it is one of the most texturally successful cod dishes
The Inés Rosales torta on which the Iberian prey carpaccio sits does not help the flavour that should be found in this dish; it is too sweet despite the seasoning of the carpaccio itself
Cobalto 15 (Malaga) Address: Paseo de la Farola, 4. Telephone: 722 653 752. Web: cobalto15.es
Prices: Salami tartar: 12€ Potato pie: 12.50€ Crab salad: 15€

With the arrival of spring and the warmer weather, especially after a season of abundant rains, comes the breeding season for the mosquitoes that transmit the West Nile virus - a disease that led to 107 confirmed cases in Andalucía in 2024
mainly between the months of July and October
Most of them were registered in the province of Seville
the Junta de Andalucía has reinforced its integrated surveillance and vector control programme for the West Nile Virus to provide coverage and minimise the impact of the virus in the most affected municipalities
determined the possibility of circulation in all municipalities (low
"The goal of the updated programme is to increase support for municipalities and provincial councils in preparing for vector control
to mobilise other health stakeholders and to better inform and support the population in the event of an alert situation," said the regional minister of health Rocío Hernández
According to the list published by the Junta de Andalucía
Several of these municipalities were already at high alert level last year
due to the detection of infected mosquitoes or horses infected by the virus
mosquito surveillance and trapping will be extended
The number of traps has been increased from 27 to 120 in all Andalusian provinces
one month earlier than last year and two months earlier than in 2023
Human surveillance is also extended to search for mild cases in high-risk areas
Since its first detection in humans in 2010
the West Nile Virus has been considered an endemic virus in western Andalucía
which spreads to the rest of the region through birds
there were nine deaths caused by the virus in Andalucía
Despite having evolved to become a universal practice (there is rarely a person who does not have a tattoo)
businesses are going through a period of slowdown
caused solely and exclusively by unfair competition: tattooists with hardly any training who tattoo at home
without complying with the strict health regulations that govern this activity
which would require the materials used to comply with regulations
illegal 'artists' offer their services at much lower prices and their clientele grows
the risks for the clients are much greater in this case
is the president of the national union of professional tattooists and piercers (Untap)
He is also the founder and owner of Tattoo Stone - the oldest studio in Malaga
there was only one foreigner tattooing in Torremolinos and no one else
We were the first Spaniards to open a studio," he said
"It is true that the market has grown a lot: companies have been doing very well for a few years
All costs have gone up and we have a serious problem with illegal tattooists," he said
Untap has recently drawn up a report on this issue
there are five tattooists operating illegally in flats that do not meet the health and hygiene conditions required by the regulations
"This is very similar to the situation in Seville
while the one in Madrid is even worse," McCoy said
It is a problem that starts at the grassroots
The oldest-serving tattoo professionals got a licence after a long training process
achieved through extensive courses that included teaching about the health regulations they must respect
All of them also went through an apprenticeship
with at least two years of professional experience
all of them are people who have always been interested in drawing and who have demonstrated excellent skills in the field
"Now they do courses of just a few days and are told that it is not necessary to be able to draw in order to tattoo
some try to open studios and see that they can't do it
everything has to be legal and it is compulsory to use sterilised products with every client
we certainly spend 40 euros on average in fixed costs
you depend on the ethics and knowledge of the tattooist
they are not using the materials that the Junta de Andalucía has determined as safe
those who work in flats promote themselves on social media and have the same marketing as any legal studio," said McCoy
The president of Untap also said that the professional organisation has brought this issue to the attention of local councils and regional authorities
but "they continue to operate with total impunity"
while "those who are open to the public are still the ones undergoing health inspections"
a client could face a serious health problem
"Hepatitis can remain on the surface of the skin for up to 15 days or a month," he said
insisting on the importance of thorough disinfection after each client
Alberto Ramírez 'Fido' is the manager of Fido Tattoo - a studio that has been open in Mijas for 24 years
there are three tattoo artists working there
It's true that we are considered a reference in this area
but there are many clients who don't think it through and get tattooed in an illegal flat to save money," he said
Fido stated that people who work from their home are people with hardly any training
"They are being told that they can become superstars after a quick course
which is actually just an initiation into the craft
He said that there are more and more such courses and less and less vocational training
"There are different proper courses every year and the people who do them are serious - people who have been in the sector for years
Fido also took the opportunity to clarify the misinformation regarding the negative consequences of tattoos that appears from time to time
I have never met anyone who has had problems with pigments
Tomy Loeb is the manager of TNT Marbella - a studio opened in 1999
where he arrived as an apprentice 15 years ago
He barely earned any money during his training
but he knew the objective he was pursuing and always moved forward with conviction
now kids want to know everything in a month," he said
TNT's clientele has a somewhat particular profile compared to the clients of the rest of the studios in Malaga province
"They are clients with very high purchasing power
who are not usually in Spain all year round
They tend to have a house here and book their appointments for the day before they return home
because it is much more expensive to get a tattoo in their country than here."
One of the areas of this business that has experienced significant growth is tattoo removal
fads and illegal artists have done a lot of damage and that there are many people who want to remove a tattoo they got years ago and now don't feel comfortable with
Malaga province has 1.77 million inhabitants
according to the latest data from the annual census of Spain's population for 2024 published by Spain's INE national statistics institute
This proportion of foreign residents is higher than the total for Spain that is still under 20%: of the total of 48.6 million inhabitants in the country
is in fifth place for the highest number of foreign-born residents
Malaga has a larger foreign population than Seville
despite the fact that the capital of the Andalucía region is more populated than Malaga (it has almost two million inhabitants
of which just over 140,500 are foreigners)
Malaga drops a few places in the national ranking: the 23% weighting of its foreign population practically equals that of Lleida
while in Almeria and Santa Cruz de Tenerife it is around 24%
the Balearic Islands and Alicante it ranges between 26% and 27%
to gain a more accurate picture of what is happening in the province
it is necessary to go down to the municipal level
The proportion of the foreign population varies greatly from one locality to another
This is because the reasons why foreigners move to this province are widely different
some people come to work here in search of a better future than that offered by their place of origin
as is the case for most people coming from North Africa or Latin America
There are also people fleeing international conflicts
such as those who have arrived from Ukraine
Then there is a third group that is unique to Spain's Mediterranean coast and its archipelagos: the one formed mainly by Europeans who retire here for the better climate and to enjoy living by the sea
in more than a third of Malaga's municipalities
residents born in other countries account for at least 20% on the Costa del Sol
Among those places are not only the large towns on the coast
where almost 64% of the people on the census were born outside Spain
of the 9,265 inhabitants of this municipality
the largest group is made up of citizens from the United Kingdom (1,388)
mainly from the centre and south of the continent
with between 40% and 45% of their population born abroad
there are seven towns of very different sizes
In the first instance we find some very populous ones like Fuengirola
which has a total population of over 85,600 with over 38,200 being foreigners
the Finnish and British communities exceed 4,600 apiece
while the Moroccan community numbers over 4,100
there are around 10,000 Latin American citizens
Alcaucín and Sayalonga are in a similar situation
The latter is the smallest of the group: it has just 1,624 residents
of whom more than 700 are of foreign origin - especially British and Germans
who account for around half of this figure
Manilva and Torrox have a similar proportion of foreign population
The former has a population of close to 18,000 inhabitants
of whom more than 7,600 were born in other countries
followed by Moroccans at over 1,000 people
in addition to more than 1,500 from American countries
of its 21,400 inhabitants slightly more than 9,000 were born in other countries
With foreign-born populations of around 37%
The former has a total population of 159,054
the largest community by nation is Moroccan
This is in line with what happens in the province as a whole
where Moroccan is the dominant non-Spanish nationality
Marbella has some 20,300 Latin American residents as a group
with Colombians and Argentines as the most prominent nationalities
4,200 Ukrainians and 3,300 of Russian origin
and those of European origin total over 23,000
The most important non-Spanish nationality here is British (7,193 people that
together with the rest of the people from European countries
followed by those from Morocco (3,617) and Argentina (3,208
a figure that exceeds 9,200 people if all the Latin American countries are added together)
which together with all the other Europeans exceeds 12,350) and Morocco (2,812)
It is the second municipality in the province with the highest density of population born outside Spain
the ones with the largest number of residents born outside of Spain in absolute numbers
Close behind them are Estepona and Torremolinos with nearly 26,000 and over 21,000 respectively
In Estepona the foreign population represents 33% of the total population on the census
Some 14,000 of these come from European countries
For Torremolinos foreigners account for 30% of the total with Moroccans outnumbering all other nationalities
There are also smaller municipalities with big numbers of foreigners
Guaro and Benamargosa it ranges between 30% and 25%
Let us look in a little more detail at other larger towns: in Nerja
Alhaurín el Grande and Coín the proportion of foreign-born residents is 34%
the two largest communities are British (1,549) and Swedish (1,018)
the British are the most prevalent (2,279)
In Coín there are around 1,700 people from the United Kingdom
just over 1,200 Moroccans and 1,504 Latin Americans
Vélez-Málaga is the eighth municipality in Malaga in terms of absolute foreign population with just over 13,200
but in relative terms this figure barely represents 15% of the total population
with the Moroccan nationality standing above the rest
Malaga city has a similar proportion of residents born in other countries: of its slightly more than 592,000 inhabitants
then almost 25,000 are from European countries
another of the most populous municipalities in the province
has around the same numbers as Malaga city
there are some municipalities where the foreign population is very low
the foreign population does not even reach 5% of the total
is going to be the main feature of this national
the entry of a frontal system from the southwest
will leave instability throughout the Iberian peninsula
Spain's state meteorological agency (Aemet) has issued a yellow alert for heavy rain and possible storms in the province at the end of the day on Thursday
The weather warning will also remain active into Friday
the rain and thunderstorm warning will be activated at 9pm in Ronda and Sol and Guadalhorce
which includes Malaga city and the westernmost parts of Malaga province
an accumulated rainfall of 15 mm is expected in one hour and
"this warning will continue on Friday 2 May until 10am
a local expert on Malaga's weather and author of SUR's blog 'Tormentas y rayos'
he suggests that it will be after midnight and the early hours of Friday morning that more rainfall will be recorded
the probability will decrease in the province of Malaga
in the westernmost area of our community there will still be a probability but less," states his blog
For Thursday "cloudy skies with cloudy intervals without ruling out occasional showers
and especially at the end of the day when moderate showers accompanied by thunderstorms are not ruled out." There could also be dust suspended in the clouds
minimum temperatures are expected to change slightly and maximum temperatures will rise across the board
The forecast also reflects light variable winds
increasing to moderate from the east or southeast inland
"light to moderate rainfall is also forecast
more likely and intense in the early hours of the morning when it may be accompanied by thunderstorms." Looking ahead to the final stretch
Aemet is also forecasting light rainfall and unchanged or falling temperatures
The maximum temperatures on Sunday will range from 19 degrees in Ronda to 25 degrees in Malaga capital
Paris Saint-Germain’s owners are exploring a deal to purchase Spanish second-tier club Malaga
also owns 22 per cent of Portuguese club Braga and has stakes in Formula 1 team Audi and NBA team Washington Wizards
It has been confirmed to The Athletic that the group is interested in adding Malaga
with a spokesperson saying: “QSI is exploring a range of investment opportunities across Europe and America currently”
Part of the attraction of Malaga to QSI is the club’s 30,000-capacity La Rosaleda stadium being a host venue for the 2030 World Cup
Malaga are 49 per cent owned by Spanish hotel and real estate group Blue Bay while Qatari businessman Abdullah Al Thani owns the remaining 51 per cent
The club is currently in administration and under judicial control
Malaga have endured a tumultuous couple of years
After spending the better part of two decades in La Liga
they were relegated from the Spanish top flight to the Segunda Division (Spanish second tier) in 2018 and in 2023
They are now back to the second tier and sit 15th
The Athletic Football Podcast discussed the world of multi-club ownership this week. Listen to that episode in full here.
The team won against Granada at the weekend in a great game from start to finish
The players overpowered their opponents in all areas and were the deserved winners of a match that was spectacular due to the atmosphere at La Rosaleda and the importance of the points
This second home win in a row launches Sergio Pellicer's team towards safety from the drop
which was already very close after a losing streak that stressed out their loyal fans
was enough to take the game and the three points
While Malaga CF had plenty of opportunities to put the game to bed
their opponents only threatened on isolated occasions
Malaga's leap in the standings is impressive
almost leaving the threat of relegation behind
Malaga's players once again demonstrated their commitment to the team
they wore their mothers' surname on their backs in homage to Día de la Madre (Mother's Day in Spain): Peinador (Herrero)
Pellicer almost replicated his plan from the previous week against Castellón
He brought on Nelson in place of the suspended Pastor and opted for Luismi
who had not performed well in previous games
With three centre-backs and Antoñito as a wing back
the coach was once again looking to stop a strong opponent in a match that started with the home side pressing hard
boosted by their fans in a packed Rosaleda stadium
all of their attempts missed or saved by Granada's goalkeeper
without any real opportunity for them to strike back
Chupete entered the box and in a recovery of the ball he was the subject of a penalty
driving the fans crazy in the La Rosaleda stands
But then came more chances for the home side
who took the measure of their opponents and searched for another goal
although the score would not change in the minutes remaining until the break (Antoñito had another shot from a low free kick)
Pellicer was winning the tactical game against Escribá
but Granada had the obligation to take a step forward
And they tried to do so at the start of the second half
but Malaga's work rate was higher and more effective in all areas of the pitch
Malaga were superior and the fans were once again enjoying themselves
although the pace of the Granada side was increasing
It was clear that the end of the game would be evenly balanced and that Malaga would be facing a final sprint from a wounded opponent in their quest for promotion
the tactical game reached its decisive moment
were finding it difficult to reach Herrero's goal area
with Borja Bastón trying to become a reference point up front
Although Rahmani had the chance to put the game to bed at the end
Malaga CFshowed their skill in achieving a victory in a great game
well-planned by the coach and played to perfection by his team
who have definitely recovered from their losing streak
playAre the PSG owners thinking of buying Malaga
(2:35)Gab Marcotti and Julien Laurens discuss the possibility of the PSG owners acquiring LaLiga Segunda División side Malaga
Qatar Sport Investment (QSI), the owner of Ligue 1 side Paris Saint-Germain, are finalising the purchase of Spanish club Málaga
which owns 49% of the club and Abdullah al-Thani
Full agreement for €100 million ($107.92 million) could be reached soon
QSI, who already owns 87.5% of PSG and 21.67% of Portuguese club Braga
will have all 100% of Málaga as the only shareholders
Sources added that QSI see Málaga as having huge potential in a big market: it is the sixth biggest city in Spain and will be hosting some games at the 2030 World Cup
It is also historically a good academy, even if the first team has not performed well since their 2013 Champions League quarterfinal appearance against Borussia Dortmund
QSI have been negotiating for some time for the purchase of Málaga
and also want to use the club as a pathway for young Parisians to develop
It is not clear how much investment QSI intend to put into the Spanish side at this stage
QSI have recently diversified their portfolio with the acquisition of shares in the Washington Wizards in 2023 and the Audi Formula One team last year
She lived with 33 dogs and nine cats that she kept in unsanitary conditions in a flat in Malaga
has already been charged by the Local Police for her alleged responsibility in a crime of animal abuse over a prolonged period of time
including the absence of food and all the other basics that are legally required for the proper care of our pets
Local officers had tried gaining entry to the property on numerous occasions from 2019
Yet it was not until a few months ago that the civil courts authorised a forced entry into the home to check on the state of the place following complaints from neighbours
It was they who had alleged unhealthy conditions
a bad smell coming from the place and the excessive presence of animals with no adequate sanitary controls inside the property
Several Local Police units took part in this operation: officers from the animal welfare unit Grupona
the ops support group GOA and local officers from the Puerto de la Torre and Teatinos district
They went to the flat in Teatinos district with other municipal workers and GOA officers then forced open the door to the flat following the tenant's refusal to let them in
The property was found to be in a poor state of repair and cleanliness
The animals were checked over and a total of 33 dogs
None of them were registered with a microchip
The officers were also able to see that the dogs were very thin and had overgrowing nails
possibly due to lack of wear and tear from not going outside
Local Police proceeded to temporarily remove the animals and transferred them to the municipal animal shelter (CEPAM)
were handed over to different collaborating bodies and individuals under the premise of temporary transfer of ownership or foster care
A total of five gas bottles for cooking or heating were also removed
After assessing that the tenant was of sound mind
police charged the woman with possessing unsterilised cats
failure to vaccinate them and failure to provide them with the required treatment as stated by law
Other charges included an alleged offence of mistreatment of animals causing them pain
failure to maintain the animals in good hygienic and sanitary conditions necessary to guarantee their health and failure to provide them with the necessary veterinary care
they were sent to the provincial prosecutor's office for the environment in Malaga and the person involved was informed of her rights as a non-detained suspect for an alleged offence of animal mistreatment
The most eastern towns of Malaga province's Axarquía area (Torrox
Frigiliana and Nerja) celebrated the “Día de las Cruces” on 3 May
a tradition that is also still popular in the Granada and Cordoba provinces of the Andalucía region
“El Día de las Cruces” sees large decorated crosses installed in local squares surrounded by items related to Andalusian culture and agriculture: copper and ceramic ware; flamenco dresses
shawls or guitars and local fruits and vegetables
This year 13 crosses were displayed across the town in the hope of a bountiful harvest for the local farmers
Apcun Nerja (association of presidents of communities/residential developments of Nerja) brought together more than 100 members and guests at the town’s Algarrobo estate
Apcun represents 62 of the many developments in Nerja and works with the town hall to improve infrastructures and services for these local residents
introduced foreign residents to this quintessential Nerja festivity and with his team offered attendees an enormous paella
a bar and barbecue and a selection of local sweet delicacies including loquats
marcochas (popcorn dipped in sugarcane honey)
as well as a bouncy castle for the children
The body of a man was found this Sunday afternoon (4 May) on La Caleta beach in Malaga city
According to sources from the 112 Andalucía emergency service control room the body had been washed ashore by the waves
It was 3.17pm when the coordination centre received an alert from the city beaches coordination service that the body of a person had been found on the shore of the beach
Emergency health services and the National Police force were notified and they removed the body from the scene
Initial indications are that the man may have died several days ago
and his corpse drifted in the sea until it was washed ashore
it will be the autopsy that will determine the circumstances of his death
Capsule hotels are making their mark in Malaga
offering a modern and affordable option for travellers seeking short-term stays
these compact accommodations have evolved to meet European preferences
providing more space and enhanced amenities
they appeal especially to younger travellers and digital nomads
In Malaga, establishments like Futurotel Malagueta Beach and Good Vibes Only Capsule Hostel are leading this trend. These capsule hotels cater to a diverse clientele
from solo travellers to business professionals
offering a unique lodging experience that balances privacy and community
their rise isn’t without controversy
Some critics express concerns about the potential for these compact spaces to become substandard housing options
especially in cities already struggling with housing shortages and rising rental prices
There are fears that capsule hotels could be misused as long-term accommodation
bypassing regulations meant to protect tenants and living standards
Despite the debates, the popularity of capsule hotels in Malaga continues to grow
reflecting a shift in traveller preferences towards more flexible and budget-friendly accommodations
capsule hotels may well become a staple in Malaga’s diverse hospitality landscape

the sky over Malaga was lit up intermittently with a succession of hundreds of lightning strikes that attracted the attention of countless citizens
expert in Malaga meteorology and author of the blog
more than 4,300 were recorded throughout Spain and more than 2,000 in Andalucía
In the province of Malaga they were mostly concentrated in the western area of Malaga and in the regions of Ronda and Antequera
According to the forecast of the national meteorological agency (Aemet)
the entry and passage through the Spanish mainland of a front associated with an Atlantic squall will cause widespread rainfall this Friday
and will put 13 autonomous communities under a rain and storm warning
the yellow warning for rain and risk of storms will end at 10am
Aemet issued the alert yesterday for the Costa del Sol
and Antequera due to a forecast of up to 20 mm of rainfall in one hour
and also stated that the storms could be accompanied by hail

Most visitors to Malaga head straight for the historic centre
But just beyond the busy tourist spots lies a unique event that many don’t know about – Patio Week in Malaga
During this time, the neighbourhoods of La Trinidad and El Perchel open their doors to reveal beautifully decorated inner courtyards called Corralones. These patios aren’t the grand, noble courtyards you might see in Cordoba or Seville
and proud residents happy to show you around
Originally built in the 19th century for Malaga‘s working class
these shared housing blocks are centred around a communal patio
Patio Week gives visitors a rare chance to experience a more authentic side of Malaga
and local food at the Corralón de Santa Sofia
the main festival hub on Calle Montes de Oca

Portugal and part of France on Monday 28 April
questions have been asked as to why some districts in Malaga regained power at 4pm
while others had to wait until 4am the following morning
there is some suspicion that among the first to return to normality were El Limonar
which are considered the wealthier areas of the city
These are the real reasons why some streets returned earlier and others later
"Restoring service after a blackout like this is extremely complicated," explains José Antonio Aguado
Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Malaga (UMA)
"That's why it has to be done gradually and by section"
generation and demand have to be equalised
After the power cut all substations were disconnected
and bringing them back on line involves protocols and procedures
The power plants and substations that supply the different sectors are connected
But the expert highlights that there is "no criterion associated with per capita income
but rather very complex technical criteria
due to the availability of the substations that are operational"
José Antonio Aguado says that La Malagueta
which is one of Malaga's wealthiest districts
"because if we put in more demand than available generation there is a risk of a new blackout; it is tested that it works and goes to another substation
The demand to be met is calculated based on the usual demand that day (Monday) at the same time at each substation
something Endesa knows with a margin of error of just one per cent
which is usually meshed and interconnected
was temporarily dismantled to generate a kind of energy island
to be reconnected by zones with the help of supplies from Morocco in the south and France in the north of the country
in addition to the "absolutely technical criteria"
certain supplies considered essential were prioritised
security forces and telecommunications systems
These are also joined by the homes of people registered as electro-dependent patients
those who need electronic devices to stay alive
Alhaurín de la Torre was one of the first to recover normality
While the rapid restoration of some districts in the east of the city may have been due to two causes mentioned above: this area is supplied from the Montes substation
which is the same line that supplies important telecommunications repeaters
But it is also true that there are many care homes where people registered as electro-dependent live
And to the question of why districts that are physically very close to each other regained electricity at such different times
they are often supplied from different substations
This explains why El Limonar had power at around 4pm
did not get electricity until 3am the following morning
The glory days in Malaga’s recent history was a run to the last eight of the Champions League in 2013.
which lost in agonising circumstances to two goals after 90 minutes from Jurgen Klopp’s Borussia Dortmund
It’s not been plain sailing for the Spanish side since
and they are currently mid-table in Spain’s second division
But for Malaga fans, there has been promising news that Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the owners of Liverpool, is exploring a deal to purchase the club, as revealed by The Athletic
who currently owns the club and what would Liverpool’s owners be getting
Dermot Corrigan and Chris Weatherspoon have the answers…
Malaga have bounced between the first and second tiers of Spanish football for much of the club’s history — their highest finish in La Liga was fourth in 2011-12
and they currently sit 15th in the Segunda Division
The Costa del Sol club’s biggest achievement is reaching the Champions League quarter-finals in 2013 under coach Manuel Pellegrini.
Malaga have suffered serious financial and institutional issues; they were relegated to the Segunda Division in 2018
and spent the 2023-24 season in the third tier.
Malaga’s 30,000-capacity Estadio La Rosaleda has been suggested by the Spanish federation to host games at the World Cup 2030
that will require significant investment and expansion
Malaga’s current ownership is complex and has been the subject of judicial intervention.
After the Qatari Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser Al Thani became president in 2010
£166m) was spent on players including Isco
Even as that star-studded team was seconds from reaching the Champions League semi-finals
financial problems in Al Thani’s stewardship had emerged
Al Thani also had plans for a €100million luxury marina and hotel complex in nearby Marbella
BlueBay Hotels group entered as an investor
and legal disagreements soon emerged between Al Thani and BlueBay
judge Maria de los Angeles Ruiz took control of the club away from Al Thani in February 2020
and appointed local lawyer Jose Maria Munoz to run its day-to-day operations
That has involved cuts to squad budgets and its off-pitch operations
especially when the team dropped down to the third tier in 2023.
Spain’s Supreme Court found that BlueBay Hotels were the legal owners of 49 per cent of Al Thani’s company
speaking anonymously to protect relationships
Al Thani currently has ‘direct or indirect’ control of just over 50 per cent of club shares
BlueBay now owns 47 per cent of the shares — through NAS Spain 2000.
they would then be business partners with BlueBay
which is owned by Spanish entrepreneur Jamal Satli Iglesias.
The remaining three per cent of club shares are held by fans and small shareholders.
FSG believe this is an opportunity to restore Malaga to the upper echelons of the Spanish and European game and there is huge potential for the only professional team in Spain’s sixth-largest city with a population of around 600,000.
The team also has a loyal fan base — even when playing in the third tier last season
attendances at its rustic La Rosaleda stadium regularly topped 20,000
coached by long-time club servant Sergio Pellicer
to get promoted back to Segunda in 2023-24
Malaga is also a well-known tourist destination
and the Costa del Sol area is home to a wealthy expat community
bringing opportunities for VIP matchday revenues and international marketing
The city is also on the provisional list of host cities for World Cup 2030
although that will require a redevelopment of its La Rosaleda stadium
which is jointly owned by the Andalusian regional government
Public support could be available to fund the redevelopment
but no firm details have been made public.
the team would likely play some seasons at the multi-purpose Estadio Ciudad de Malaga
where the current capacity of just over 10,000 could be expanded to around 20,000
FSG is not the first to see the potential in Malaga
the Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi said during a visit to the city that the Qatar Sports Investments (QSi) group
were also interested in buying the club.
Last week, PSG’s owners confirmed to The Athletic that the group is interested in adding Malaga to their portfolio
Also reportedly interested was a local group led by former Spain basketball international Jose Manuel Calderon
with the legal issues over the ownership of the club’s shares so tangled
Another complication is an ongoing judicial investigation into the potential misappropriation of club funds during Al Thani’s presidency
and regular social media posts through the years have suggested conspiracies against him involving UEFA
the Spanish media and local authorities in Malaga
daily posts from Al Thani have suggested that further developments are close
Some build stories to distract. We build silence to prepare.#JusticeForMalaga
— Abdullah N Al Thani (@ANAALThani) March 31, 2025
Following the excitement of Al Thani’s early years
Malaga’s fans have been through the wringer over the last decade
The Qatari became deeply unpopular with the club’s supporters and they staged regular protests against his presidency
There has also been frustration at judicial appointment Munoz’s running of the club in recent years
including the firing of many long-serving club staff and the sale of promising local youth teamers to other clubs
we need what is best for the club,” said coach Pellicer last week when asked about QSI potentially taking over Malaga
“Whatever strengthens the club is welcome.”
Malaga’s 2024-25 official La Liga salary limit is €11.8m — the eighth-highest of the 22 Segunda clubs
An unfortunate 94th-minute own goal consigned them to a 2-1 defeat at Real Oviedo on Sunday
and left Pellicer’s team six points above the relegation zone with nine games remaining.
“People are craving stability and any owner will be better than Al Thani
so fans will be open to a new and serious owner coming into the club,” one Malaga supporter told The Athletic on Monday.
“I’m delighted that there are potential funds interested in buying Malaga,” said Munoz on Monday
someone will come with the document and say they have bought the club.”
La Liga and the Spanish federation have no issue with teams being part of multi-club groups — top-flight side Girona have been part of City Football Group since 2017
while Leganes’ owners Blue Crow also have clubs in Mexico
when QSI’s interest in buying Malaga was made public
La Liga president Javier Tebas said: “I’d have no problem if they buy the club
Fenway Sports Group is routinely held up as an exceptionally valuable sporting empire, with Forbes pricing the group at $12.95billion in 2024
pitching them as the world’s third-most valuable sporting group at the time
A little under half of that amount was attributable to Liverpool, and during their time at the helm FSG have restored the Anfield outfit from a dire financial position to one of fairly rude health, especially by the exacting standards of English football. Across FSG’s time on Merseyside, Liverpool have pretty much broken even
and The Athletic expects the club to post a profit in 2024-25
alongside breaking the £700million revenue barrier (the only other English to have done so to date is Manchester City)
Liverpool benefited from £127.3m in owner funding last season
though it came via FSG selling a stake in the business to Dynasty Equity
that valued the football arm — which at this stage is effectively just Liverpool — at £4.24bn
That’s more than 18 times what FSG bought the club for in October 2010
and not too far shy of that Forbes valuation
Sitting on a valuable asset doesn’t necessarily mean FSG is cash-rich
and in truth they’ve been fairly tight with the purse strings at Anfield
That £127.3m injection was the first time since 2015-16 that Liverpool had received funding from their owners and across their time in charge
the total amount the club has received from on high is £263.6m
a long way behind several other English clubs
Yet that’s more a product of the sustainability model FSG have employed than any inability to fund Liverpool
providing the funding needed to get the club moving in the right direction and
While financial disclosures of the group’s wider activities are thin on the ground, it’s highly unlikely they’re searching behind the back of the sofa. In January 2024, a group led by FSG’s principal owner John W. Henry invested $1.5-3bn in golf’s PGA Tour
the cash required to buy and run a club in Spain’s second tier is an order of magnitude lower than many of FSG’s other ventures
it’s worth considering how much FSG might have to invest to make a success of things in Andalusia
Malaga are back in the Segunda Division after a year exiled in Spain’s third tier
and their cost base accordingly pales in comparison to Liverpool’s
After coming under judicial control in 2020
Malaga booked four consecutive annual losses
yet the club’s combined pre-tax deficit in that period was just €17.7m (£14.4m
with most of that coming at the beginning of the decade
That’s not great for Malaga right now but would hardly be deemed ruinous at FSG’s level
A look at the wage bills of the Segunda’s recently promoted clubs is instructive of how much might need to be spent at Malaga to propel the club back into La Liga
seven of nine clubs promoted to the top tier have done so with staff costs between €14m and €30m
who were promoted last season with a €44.5m wage bill
Espanyol benefited from a €25.4m La Liga distribution that included Spain’s equivalent of a parachute payment
the rest of the second tier received €5-7m from the league (in 2022-23
FSG would have to contend with clubs with greater turnover than Malaga but the gulf is not so large as if they were to buy
The likelihood of meaningful profit in Spain’s second tier is slim
but the uplift in Malaga’s value were they to get back to La Liga — and stay there — could be significant.
any would-be buyer of Malaga will benefit from already strong support
Those high third-tier attendances were a big part of the club’s finances not nosediving
and the size of the local population makes for an obvious growth area
One longer-term uncertainty that FSG would have to deal with is the situation at La Rosaleda
though even here there may be sizeable upside potential
With public funding seemingly on offer for the redevelopment
there’s a chance FSG could assume control of a club that enjoys the spoils of a venue they haven’t had to bear the (full) cost of improving
albeit that would be dependent upon any agreement they came to with local government
The presumption about multi-club organisations (MCOs) is that clubs will trade players at will
with the largest clubs in the group lending their up-and-comers to the smaller sides
in exchange reaping the benefits of any stars that come through clubs occupying football’s lower rungs
Yet, as detailed by Twenty First Group’s AJ Swoboda in The Athletic’s recent podcast series on MCOs
the evidence for that actually happening is scarce
Where Liverpool would be more likely to benefit is behind the scenes
By bringing a club from mainland Europe under their control
FSG could more easily put boots on the ground from a scouting perspective
that favoured mid-season voyage of many clubs
would presumably be made a lot cheaper for Liverpool if their owners had ready access to facilities in the south of Spain
Broader cost efficiencies could be possible too
UEFA rules do require clubs to adhere to a ‘reporting perimeter’ that ensures all costs which go towards a club’s footballing operations are appropriately recorded
something FSG would need to be wary of if they did buy another club
Be it Malaga or anyone else that FSG choose to take the plunge with
Liverpool will remain the jewel in the group’s footballing crown
Liverpool fans need not worry about their side falling down the priority list
More likely any multi-club venture undertaken by FSG would be done so in the hope of improving Liverpool’s lot
any purchase would necessarily require investment in the early stages
FSG doubtless have the resources to do whatever they choose in that regard
but any Liverpool fans hoping they’ll change tack and start pouring money into their club are likely to be disappointed
The buying up of other clubs would make a move away from Liverpool’s sustainable model even less likely than it already is

in which the Dominican director explores how an unplanned pregnancy forces a teenager into adulthood
Also screening in competition is Eva Libertad’s debut feature Deaf
which won the audience award of the Panorama at the Berlinale last month
It explores how a child’s arrival challenges the relationship between a deaf mother and her hearing boyfriend
Veteran director Gracia Querejeta is in competition with The Good Luck
about a renowned architect who abruptly leaves his life behind to start again in a rundown town and Belén Funes is bringing her sophomore directorial effort The Exiles
about a mother and daughter forced navigating a return to their home town when an eviction forces them from Barcelona.
“As we neared the end of the selection process
we realised the films that interested us most were directed by women,” said Málaga festival director Juan Antonio Vigar
“I don’t know if this percentage will hold in the coming years
but it certainly creates a ripple effect.”
13 of the competition titles are lead-produced by women
Further titles screening include Gemma Blasco’s feature debut Fury
which has just screened at SXSW and stars Alex Monner
The film explores the aftermath of a New Year’s Eve sexual assault on a young actress and her brother
Argentinian actress Mercedes Morán will preside over a competition jury composed of actress-singer-writer Daniela Vega
Guadalajara Film Festival director Estrella Araiza
Spanish actresses Belén Cuesta and Irene Escolar
directors Carlos Marques-Marcet and Pilar Palomero

The Malaga property that Helion is interested in acquiring for the world's first-ever fusion power plant
The panel of speakers at Thursday morning's press conference announcing Helion's interest in acquiring Malaga property to build a fusion power plant
The Chelan County PUD held a press conference Thursday where Helion
announced interest in acquiring Malaga property to build a fusion power plant
Helion says that if all permits are obtained in an orderly fashion
they hope to break ground this summer and…
is considering property in Malaga for the construction of the world’s first-ever fusion power plant with hopes of fulfilling a purchase agreement to provide power to Microsoft
Helion’s interest in the site was formally announced at a press conference Thursday morning at the Confluence Technology Center
Gathered to make the announcement were Chelan-Douglas Regional Port Authority CEO Jim Kuntz
Chelan County Community Development Director Deanna Walter
Chelan County PUD General Manager Kirk Hudson and Helion Communications Director Jessie Barton
“We’re looking at developing a 50 megawatt fusion power plant on PUD-owned land
on the Chelan side of the Columbia River,” said Barton
this isn’t an official site selection at this point
but we are at the point where we’re ready to bring in more community members and have a larger conversation about this potential project.”
Chelan County will act as the permitting agency for Helion’s site of interest
but Walter says the county has yet to hold an official pre-application meeting with Helion
“Being that we don’t have a current application yet
this is still the initial stages,” said Walter
but we look forward to working with Helion as we would with any industry or applicant who comes to our counter.”
Hudson says the PUD is interested in the efficiency of the fusion power that Helion hopes to produce
Barton made a comment about fusion power being so efficient that the water in her body could be used to power her home for two years
then we’re always looking for ways to keep our costs and services affordable for our community,” said Hudson
“We have all of our eggs in one basket with hydropower
but the future is going to be much different than the past has been.”
Barton says that if all permits are approved smoothly
Helion hopes to break ground this summer and begin generating fusion power in 2028
“This would be the world’s first fusion power plant,” said Barton
“This power plant would actually be to fulfill a power purchase agreement that Helion has
The power purchase agreement says that we will produce 50 megawatts of fusion power and Microsoft has agreed to buy and purchase that power.”
the company estimates hiring 130 employees to facilitate the construction process
and then 30 to 40 employees to oversee 24/7 power plant operations
Helion will host a community event March 11 from 5:30 p.m
to further discuss what a fusion plant would entail with the public

The 75-year-old bishop formally presented his resignation to the Pope when he reached the retirement age set for bishops
he is still head of the diocese while a replacement is found
Catalá underwent surgery for a polyp in his bladder on Tuesday 22 April
and the bishop expressed his gratitude for the signs of closeness
prayer and fraternal affection that were sent to him on the occasion of his operation," the diocese said at the time
on Tuesday morning he had to have another operation at the Vithas Málaga hospital (Parque San Antonio)
so he had to have another operation in the afternoon and is currently in the intensive care unit
On Thursday afternoon an update on his condition was given
saying that he had developed sepsis and that his condition was "serious" but that he was "stable"
Monsignor Catalá was born in Villamarchante in Valencia and has been bishop of Malaga since 2008
he had previously been bishop of Alcalá de Henares
and auxiliary bishop of Valencia (1996-1999)
Jesús Catalá was scheduled to preside over a mass in the Cathedral this Sunday at 11.30am

Female doctors registered with the Malaga college of doctors have
surpassed the number of registered male doctors
when there were 5,328 registered females compared to 5,174 males
There has been an exponential growth in the number of female doctors since 2011
when there were 4,040 males compared to 2,757 females
67 per cent of female doctors work in the public sector
31 per cent in the private sector and two per cent work in both sectors
40% in the private sector and 18% work in both areas
according to data released on Wednesday 30 April at a press conference given by the Andalusian council of medical associations (CACM)
In 2023 there were 5,074 men compared to 5,055 women
it is worth noting that in the public sector there is a majority of female doctors: 15,477 compared to 9,286 doctors (1,443 more than in 2023); while in private and mixed practice the majority are men: 4,890 doctors in private and mixed practice and 2,830 doctors in the mixed field," explains the CACM
The number of working women in Andalucía exceeds the number of men by 4,000
and the difference is even greater in the public sector
"We must insist that the administration increase conciliation measures
protection of pregnancy risk and breastfeeding for all of them
Trying to eliminate 24-hour shifts is a legitimate aspiration of both men and women," the association says
In Andalucía female doctors tend to work in clinical specialities
while the surgical specialities continue to have more men
The traditional May Day demonstration in Malaga started from the Alameda de Colón just after 11.30am on Thursday
this year focused on "protecting what has been won" in the face of the rise of extreme right-wing political parties and governments all over the world
Thousands of people took to the streets in the capital to defend "won labour rights" in the face of the ultra-right wave
are calling to defend the labour rights that have cost so many years of trade union struggle and which are now being called into question by the reactionary movements
which has yet to be approved by the government
were also very present in the demands of the demonstrators
The threat of rain did not change the plans of the demonstrators who came to the emblematic meeting of the workers' movement
Several thousand people followed a route that ran along the Alameda de Colón
and which culminated in Plaza de la Constitución with speeches by Fernando Cubillo and Soledad Ruiz
provincial secretaries of CCOO and UGT respectively
The national slogan chosen for this year's march was "Protect what has been achieved
representatives of left-wing political parties
other trade unions and social and neighbourhood groups attended the march
This is an updated version of a story first published in March 2024
Ever since the appointment of Michael Edwards as chief executive of football at Fenway Sports Group (FSG) in March 2024
it has been clear the multi-club ownership model is coming to Anfield
Edwards, Liverpool’s former sporting director
returned to the FSG fold with the belief that the club has little choice but to expand if it is to “remain competitive” in the Premier League and beyond
The key to that is an ambitious plan to invest in a partner club
On Saturday, The Athletic reported that FSG is exploring a deal to purchase Spanish second-tier side Malaga
FSG’s multi-club plans mean falling in line with the Premier League crowd
Well over half of the 20 teams in the English top flight now have relationships with at least one other European club and the pattern has been extended in the past two years
This is Liverpool having to keep up with the Joneses, as FSG president Mike Gordon outlined in an email to staff last year following Edwards’ appointment
“Global football has changed immensely over the past several years
becoming increasingly sophisticated and creating myriad challenges,” Gordon wrote
we must identify every avenue available to us to gain an edge
Michael (Edwards) will use every tool at his disposal and has already identified the acquisition of another club as one channel that will help fortify our overall operation and drive our competitive ambitions.”
Liverpool had previously resisted the trend set by Manchester City’s ownership, who have amassed 13 teams around the globe under the City Football Group (CFG) banner — including Girona in Spain
Palermo in Italy and New York City in the U.S
– but there is an acceptance that the advantages of a multi-club model cannot be overlooked
the investment in Liverpool,” added Gordon
we see it as a path that will help strengthen our club for the future.”
It has long been mooted that FSG was open to buying another football club to run alongside Liverpool
There were links to as many as four sides in Brazil – Cruzeiro
Athletico Paranaense and Internacional – but Billy Hogan
suggested in 2023 that this had ceased to be a priority
(multi-club ownership) makes sense,” Hogan said during the SportsPro Media APAC conference in Singapore
we’re focused on what Liverpool is doing.”
but Edwards’ return presented an opportune moment to press ahead with the strategy
The chance to expand the FSG stable was a factor in quietening Edwards’ initial reticence over a Liverpool return
“One of the biggest factors in my decision is the commitment to acquire and oversee an additional club
growing this area of their organisation,” Edwards said in an FSG statement after his appointment
investment and expansion of the current football portfolio is necessary.”
'Back to the future': How FSG rehired Edwards - and what it means for Liverpool
There is a pattern to the clubs targeted by those in the Premier League seeking expansion: big enough to compete in the top division of a domestic competition without costing the earth to buy
but the preference for this first step was always likely to be a team in Europe
the United Kingdom’s vote to withdraw from the European Union (EU) in 2016
making it more difficult for overseas players to obtain a work permit to join English clubs
Owning one in an EU member nation helps circumvent those rules
presenting the chance for a player to build up his UK qualification criteria in another league
It could also give a temporary home to promising under-18s from continental Europe who are no longer eligible to sign for English clubs
The push to form partnerships with European sides in the years since Brexit has not been a coincidence
The move aligns with the group’s interest in acquiring teams with strong traditions and growth potential, similar to its previous interest in Bordeaux. In July last year, FSG withdrew from talks to buy the French club “following extensive and constructive discussions with all stakeholders”
Malaga have a history of being an established top-flight team and competing in Europe
but they have experienced a decline in recent years
They were promoted back to the second division last season and FSG believes there is an opportunity to restore the club
who were Champions League quarter-finalists in 2013
An FSG delegation visited Malaga’s headquarters in February as part of this process
Nothing is concluded yet and any deal for Malaga would not necessarily be straightforward
a judge has controlled the club since 2020 amid complex legal issues around a proposed sale to local group BlueBay Hotels
who currently own about half of its shares
Judicial prosecutors are also investigating the alleged misappropriation of club funds during the presidency of Qatari businessman Abdullah bin Nasser Al-Thani
FSG appears to be exploring multiple options
having conducted due diligence and site visits on several Spanish sides over the past year — including Levante
with the French market the other main focus of its evaluations
It is not a term any executive likes to use — not when it is so disparaging to those lower down a multi-club pyramid — but the chance to use these other teams as ‘feeder clubs’ has an increasing appeal to those in the Premier League
As well as the edge it can offer in the recruitment of youngsters
it also gives a chance to develop Liverpool’s own talent
There is greater control over a youngster’s progression when sent on loan to a partner club
with the multi-club model typically asking all its teams to play in the same style
Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly summed up the motives well enough
“Our goal is to make sure we can show pathways for our young superstars to get onto the Chelsea pitch while getting them real game time,” he said in 2023
Youngsters can be loaned out to partner clubs knowing they will get opportunities and minutes at a competitive level
something that cannot always be taken for granted
That might not lead to that player eventually enjoying a career with the biggest club in the stable
but it will likely see them build up a greater residual value
In these times of tightened profit and sustainability rules (PSR)
these are the gains that can make a difference
There is also the opportunity to share scouting analysis and data when part of a multi-club model
featuring Germany’s Leipzig and Austria’s Salzburg among others
This all leads back to Gordon’s spoken ambition to strengthen Liverpool
Multi-club projects are dangerous to the future and fabric of football
as Chelsea’s BlueCo owners are discovering while owning French club Strasbourg
where restless supporters have made their displeasure clear
with their win against Lyon on Friday taking them up to fifth in Ligue 1
the top division of club football in France
there have also been protests at Lyon against John Textor’s Eagle Football Group
where Bournemouth owner Bill Foley’s Black Knight Football Entertainment has a stake
Others have also run into problems when two clubs from the same group have ended up in a European competition together
prohibits partner clubs from facing one another and that ruling threw up problems ahead of last season after Brighton & Hove Albion and Belgium’s Royale Union Saint-Gilloise both qualified for the Europa League
Brighton were eventually able to feature after UEFA was persuaded that their owner Tony Bloom did not have decisive influence at Union
Aston Villa had the same issue as their Portuguese partner club
joined them in the Europa Conference League last season
were eventually forced to reduce their stake in Vitoria to comply
also saw the problems encountered by Milan and Toulouse
has control of those clubs and was able to convince UEFA both ought to be able to play in its competitions
Included in UEFA’s conditions on all those cases was that no partner clubs could transfer players from one to another until after last summer’s window
The premise will be the same: to form beneficial partnerships and reap the competitive advantages they bring
CFG has been at this for over a decade
nobody has shown a willingness to replicate its breadth and FSG
an organisation conscious of its financial limits
embarked on its multi-club mission in the summer of 2023 when buying Strasbourg and more are expected to join the stable
FSG is yet to indicate how ambitious its plans for a multi-club model will be
but Edwards believes expansion is a must and perhaps Malaga could be the start

insulin and cognitive impairment-related diseases such as Alzheimer's and dementia have in common
but the relationship between the first two elements of the question posed may help to prevent or
which can be so distressing for the families and friends of sufferers
On 24 April Malaga's biomedical research institute and nanomedicine platform (Ibima Plataforma Bionand) hosted the launch meeting of the Nutricia project
a pioneering initiative that brought together researchers from leading institutions such as the Erasmus Medical University of Rotterdam
and the biotech companies Holisum and Euronutra
all members of the international consortium against cognitive deterioration
The overall initiative will run for three years and is coordinated by Dr Fernando Rodríguez de Fonseca
principal researcher of neuropsychopharmacology at Ibima
The project will analyse the role of insulin resistance (when cells in the human body do not respond adequately to insulin
a hormone whose main function is to facilitate the entry of glucose into cells so that the cells can use it as energy) and metabolic imbalances as key factors in the development of cognitive impairment and brain ageing
"We are witnessing a paradigm shift in the understanding of the factors that contribute to cognitive decline
is proving to have a direct impact on brain function
With Nutricia we are going to study how we can intervene on this pathway through accessible tools such as nutrition," says Dr Rodríguez
"Insulin is a hormone that not only acts in muscle
fat tissue or the liver to regulate energy storage and remove glucose from the blood
it also regulates neuronal function and vitality
it has been found that people with insulin resistance
or rather those in whom this hormone is not effective
"could have a greater association with the onset of dementia and Alzheimer's"
"This hypothesis in turn led to the type 3 diabetes hypothesis
which states that there is a lack of insulin signalling in the brain," a very complex process that leads to glucose uptake
"We know that biochemical mechanisms associated with this insulin signalling are associated with the depositing of proteins that accumulate abnormally in Alzheimer's." One of these proteins
neuronal death and cognitive impairment," says this lead researcher
to identify nutritional elements to make interventions that can modify this cerebral metabolic alteration and achieve a healthier process of ageing
we researched eight years ago a molecule that is present in the carob pod called D-pinitol
It is capable of activating the insulin signal and correcting it in the brain," says Dr Rodríguez
"We have already done several studies and we have patents with Euronutra that allow us to protect and exploit the idea that D-pinitol
could improve insulin resistance and prevent or slow down cognitive deterioration."
the research team led by Dr Pedro Serrano (head of the clinical neurology unit)
is going to sign up patients who consult the neurologist about symptoms of subjective cognitive decline (SCD)
or "the feeling that they are losing their memory."
"we are going to combine a nutritional intervention with D-pinitol together with the usual care given to these people who come with the subjective feeling that they are losing memory." They will be closely followed for two years and certain proteins will be monitored that
would indicate the onset of Alzheimer's disease
the accumulation of these proteins would disappear
A retrospective study will be conducted in tandem in Rotterdam
examining the metabolic history of 18,000 people aged over 30 to see if
preclinical models of diet-induced obesity will be studied to analyse the molecular mechanisms that link metabolic dysfunction with neurodegenerative processes
artificial intelligence (AI) will be applied to pull together all the data obtained
