LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — A man accused of trying to lure two children into his vehicle in northwest Las Vegas has been sentenced
This all began back in February
Police say an 11-year-old child was approached
by a man who was driving a black two-door sedan
later identified as 31-year-old Irving Malagon
said he motioned for her to come over and she thought it was her uncle
she realized that it wasn't her uncle and that Malagon's pants were down with his "area" in his hand
She saw a couple nearby as they were getting into a vehicle in their driveway and she ran over to ask them for help
WATCH: Video shows man suspected of luring child into his car
Las Vegas police were able to track down Malagon and arrested him the day after this incident
During an interview with officers
Malagon told police that he is from Fresno
He said he had been in the valley for about a month
The report states when officers asked about approaching the little girl
Malagon said he didn't do or say anything inappropriate and he did ask if her father was one of the construction workers on the roof of a nearby house
When officers asked about exposing himself
Malagon allegedly "claimed that he did have to urinate on the street because he really had to go bad"
Las Vegas police sent Malagon's photo and a description to other local police jurisdictions in case other incidents had happened and a woman came forward saying something similar happened to her niece in the same area
Malagon was charged with luring children with the intent to engage in sexual conduct
open or gross lewdness in the presence of a child
and attempted lewdness in the presence of a child
A judge sentenced Malagon to spend between 42 months and 105 months in jail
That's three and a half years to about eight and a half years in jail

Against Malagón's modest Spring Street facade
What waits behind it is a remarkable exploration of Spain's many culinary regions
The converted single-family house is painted beige
The only signage is a round brown panel with a single tall M on it
though “Malagón” is inscribed in stylish but discrete gold letters on one plate glass window and “Mercado y Tapería” on the other
What waits behind it is a remarkable exploration of Spain’s many culinary regions
Each visit begins with a complimentary dish of quicos
fried corn kernels that are very salty and hard enough to rattle your fillings
Chunks of tender spiced lamb ($18) arrive in a flat brown bowl
speared with toothpicks for easy dipping or
since they’re half submerged in an oily pool of paprika-laced marinade
More primly plated is La Bomba del la Barcoloneta ($15)
a golden brown orb topped with a piped swirl of white aioli and bright green parsley leaf
a layer of soft mashed potatoes encloses crumbles of savory ground pork with a sneaky but pleasant surge of spicy heat
Some of the small plates can only be described as odd
One would expect bold flavors from smoked lamb shoulder ($19) that’s sliced thin and layered with fermented peaches
There’s barely a trace of smoke or fruity sweetness
and the soft yellow slices of peach fade almost to nothingness on the tongue
What looks to be a plate of sliced ham is actually cured tuna belly ($13) shaved into long rose-hued strips and drizzled with olive oil
If you follow your server’s advice and fold a thin slice around one of the accompanying marcona almonds
umami-rich package that’s a little gritty and leathery on the tongue
and over the past five years has embedded itself somewhat quietly into the local scene
Old-timers will remember the small ground-floor space as the former home of Artisan Meat Share
and the basic layout is the same: long bar counter to the left
a few larger tables in a niche on the right
A scattering of white marble two-tops lets you dine amid the mercato offering
Bottle after bottle of Spanish wine line long shelves along each wall
interspersed with cans of imported paprika and tinned fish
The restaurant is a collaboration among Fanny and Patrick Panella
the restaurateurs behind Bin 152 and Chez Nous
It’s just around the corner from Chez Nous
the atmosphere and menu at Malagón seem almost a world away
It consists of eight sheets of cardstock of increasing lengths
you can see the headings at the bottom of each page —“Para Picar/Snacks” at the very top
but such a format is bewildering to those who remember things spatially
By the time I flipped my way to “Del Mar/From the Sea,” I struggled to recall the three tempting options we had settled on from the tapas tabs
Even more flipping ensued when the server arrived and asked
“Now what did we say we wanted from the Vegetables section?”
But that’s all forgotten once the dishes start to arrive
They do so at random intervals as each is ready
which injects an element of surprise and delight
The two pages of tapas include the requisite crisp-fried patatas bravas ($9) and also two of the best small dishes I’ve had this year
The ensalada de calamar ($16) looks quite unlike a squid salad and more like a cold noodle dish
The squid is sliced into long spaghetti-like strips that are delightfully al dente in texture
They’re tossed in a slick of good olive oil with a bang of salt
lots of chopped chives and just enough garlic to impart a sharp finishing note
Equally surprising is a seemingly simple plate of three stout-but-soft white asparagus spears ($16)
each with two slivers of anchovy perched on top
Daubs of garlic-scented aioli flank the spears
adding a creamy accent to what is otherwise a funky
It’s the kind of aggressively flavorful combo you either love or hate
The fish of the day incorporates fresh local catch into inventive preparations like cabbage-wrapped black grouper in a bright orange chorizo sauce
which might incorporate grouper cheeks and Jimmy Nardello peppers one day
The roasted rabbit ($42) is deceptive in its simplicity
are stacked atop a long spear of rosemary and a thin pool of light-brown sauce
A slice of that silky white meat might seem a touch dry until you dredge it through the buttery jus
but its aperitivo list offers a selection of vermouths and sherries
crisp marriage of amontillado and vermouth with a kiss of orange on the finish
a garnish of a green olive wrapped in lemon peel proves to be an excellent briny counterbalance to the sweetness of sparkling cava and red vermouth in the Malagón’s Spritz ($15)
which hew to theme and don’t stray beyond Spanish borders
A solid glass of red like the Viña Alberdi from La Rioja Alta ($16) or a young
light Gramona Mart rosé ($15) are fine matches for the plates’ spice and acid
López de Heredia Viña Tondonia ($29/glass)
dry finish that makes you linger over each sip
offering a tour of the country’s various regions
It’s tied to the Lowcountry primarily via the array of fresh vegetables and fruit from local purveyors
An impressive summer fruit salad ($18) balances the bright sweetness of local peaches
figs and cherry tomatoes with a tart vinaigrette and just a hint of spice
A few firm wedges of plum pop up in the mix
and a sprinkle of chopped Marcona almonds adds an excellent buttery crunch
There is one distracting note on the plate
The same sharp note recurs on the grilled carrots ($16)
which are tender and richly sweet but land quite harshly on the tongue thanks to big leaves of parsley and a stiff dose of paprika
That second note is applied with too generous a hand elsewhere
Against the spiced lamb’s wonderfully tender but chewy bite
paprika-laced oil seems harsh and quite salty
The same stiff punch jars against the concentrated tomato sweetness in the Bomba de la Barceloneta’s supporting sauce
almost crumb-like rice glistens in lush brown sauce infused with squid ink
and those sweet bits really pop against the tender
The restaurant’s showcase plate remains the tortilla Española ($14)
it’s baked in a small cast-iron pan then flipped over so the beautiful golden-brown crust becomes the top
Inside the eggy goodness are layers of onion and superbly tender slices of potatoes
Even the dessert card offers unexpected regional delights
The real head-turner is the Basque cheesecake ($11)
a crustless concoction with a surface caramelized also black and
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the importance of place and what it means to be “a Charleston restaurant.” Does Malagón qualify
the answer is a firm “no.” There are no “Spain heads South” mashups
I could stretch a bit and declare the crab rice a Spanish take on a Lowcountry classic
but the only similarity it bears to local dishes by that name is that it contains crab and rice
WEB: malagonchs.com
Malagón seems a thoroughly Charleston restaurant
The use of fresh local vegetables grounds it in the local terroir
the food has a direct lineage in the city’s fine-dining scene and fits nicely into the larger culinary aesthetic
Cassalett cut his teeth in the kitchen at Carolina’s under the tutelage of Jeremiah Bacon
and the grounding in technique and focus on quality ingredients really show
The preparations may adhere closely to Spanish traditions
especially in the depth and intensity of flavors and the willingness to stretch diners’ culinary boundaries
The restaurant is located just a few short strides off Upper King Street
under the shadows of hulking new apartment buildings
it’s easy to walk right past and not notice the little tapería
but if Malagón’s not on your radar screen yet

he proved why he's not only been Las Aguilas' best player of the 2024 Clausura
Years after nearly walking away from his dreams because he missed his family -- and his mother's cooking -- when he was a teenager with Santos Laguna's academy system, the Michoacan native stood tall in net over the weekend with five highlight-worthy saves in a 1-0 win over Cruz Azul that secured a second consecutive title for Club América
With the trophy clinched after the 2-1 aggregate victory
and Malagón keeping the crosstown rivals scoreless in the second leg
the Mexico City giants extended their record tally of Liga MX trophies to 15
Malagón finished the regular season with the best goals prevented rating (5.44)
Of the 13 Liga MX players who had 15-plus regular-season games in net
none surpassed his noteworthy save percentage of 78.2%
Not bad for a humble figure who was once an afterthought for Club América just months ago

Ortiz then decided to alter his XI after an especially poor performance from Jiménez in a 3-0 loss at home to Pachuca
Malagón found himself earning his first start with Club América in arguably the most intimidating venue in Mexican soccer
During an away game against Tigres at their home ground that is nicknamed El Volcan (The Volcano)
Malagón impressed with a clean sheet in a 2-0 victory in March 2023
An eight-game undefeated streak was maintained while Malagón ruled between the sticks
and by the time the following 2023 Apertura tournament rolled around under the leadership of new coach André Jardine
Powering their way to first in the Apertura standings and an eventual spot in the Liga MX final
Club América were molded into both the best offense and defense by Jardine
Malagón helped lead the backline in front of him
and in the Apertura championship series vs
he allowed just one goal over 180+ minutes
After helping secure a 4-1 aggregate win that cemented Club América's 14th championship
Malagón was unpretentious about his celebration plans
"The only thing I want is to go to Michoacan now," the goalkeeper told Claro Sports
On Sunday's second leg of the Liga MX final in a rainy Estadio Azteca
one of those saves perfectly highlighted how significant he has become for the Mexico City side
After already making four crucial interventions against a much more proactive Cruz Azul, Malagón kept Club América's title hopes alive through a highly dramatic 91st-minute stop that would have equalized the scoreline. Had the shot from Cruz Azul's Rodrigo Huescas gone in
thereby making it 1-1 in the second leg and 2-2 on aggregate
two halves of extra time would have been the likely outcome of the final
"I have to throw myself, in whatever way," Malagón told TUDN about his thought process
"But I think it was that adrenaline you have in the moment
and thank God it worked and we're champions today."
but there's no denying that Malagón was the savior
Mexico will also be hoping that he could do the same for the national team
Similar to filling the massive gloves of Ochoa over at Club América, Malagón will be doing the same for Mexico after news broke this month that the legendary five-time World Cup participant has been left out of the Copa América roster
As part of a generational shift that has dropped a handful of veteran players in the latest call-up
Malagón now suddenly finds himself as the most experienced international goalkeeper in Mexico's roster with just four appearances to his name
can he have a comparable impact for club and country
When Malagón arrived at Club América a little over a year ago
there was a sense that they were beginning to lose their grip as the most powerful team in Liga MX
One title in the previous 15 seasons wasn't exactly the sign of a successful organization that is at its peak
but Malagón has been an invaluable part of the process that has led to two consecutive titles
When looking at Mexico, the narrative of a fallen giant is one that's similar to what Club América were going through before Malagón's arrival. No longer the undisputed kings of North America, El Tri have struggled to keep pace with the United States and have had issues with other growing Concacaf nations
Mexico also fell far short of expectations after an early exit in the group stage
Malagón has waited patiently for his turn at the international stage
all signs point to him getting his chance to revive Mexico as well
he'll be celebrating responsibly before possibly becoming El Tri's next savior
"The only thing I want is to go to Michoacan
to my parents," Malagón said with a smile to TUDN after clinching Sunday's trophy
University to administer leasing of 20 off-campus homes in January Nicolas SonnenburgTHE SANTA CLARAOctober 8
2015 Santa Clara’s housing office announced to the residents of certain properties near campus Wednesday that it will directly oversee many of the popular off-campus homes rented by students starting on July 1
2016.Among the houses in question are iconic student-named hovels such as “Hooters,” “Zoo,” “Fishbowl” and “Bermuda.” The university has owned these properties for years
oversight of these houses was outsourced to Real Source
an independent property management company.According to a FAQ page on the university housing website
the decision to put these properties directly under the oversight of the Office of Housing was made to establish a more streamlined process for students who rent the properties
which are now referred to as “Neighborhood Units.”Much of the operation of the Units will mirror the system used to run on-campus residence halls.Students will now apply for ten-month housing contracts for the units through the university’s online housing application process
Residents will be able to make payments through their bursar accounts.Unit pricing will be finalized within the next two weeks
the university expects to charge slightly above current prices
director of housing business services. The housing office will give priority to current residents
they will award placement based on a first come
students who live in the Neighborhood Units will sign a Undergraduate Housing Contract
In order to hold residents accountable for Student Handbook policies
Campus Safety Services will patrol the residences like they do for graduate housing.“CSS officers go out to these houses to do rounds and report any items they may find
which more often than not tend to be maintinance needs,” Malagon said.To keep these residents educated
the Housing Office will provide the tenants with information about university policy and city violations. With this move
the university hopes to further establish an official presence in the immediate neighborhood surrounding the campus.“This change demonstrates to students and parents
that Santa Clara University will have greater oversight for these units,” the web page says.Of the the 20 homes now directly under the purview of the university’s housing office
five are on Bellomy Street and four are on Alviso Street
all within the area of Santa Clara known as “Light Side,” a popular party destination for many adventurous underclassmen. The decision comes after several years of a contentious town and gown relationship
which climaxed in a failed city ordinance intended to limit the number of residents allowed in homes
and a swelling tide of complaints about landlords who took advantage of young
inexperienced tenants. The Housing Office is holding two informational sessions about the new units on Thursday
26 at 7:00 pm.More information about the change and a full list of the 20 homes now under Housing’s purview is available on the Housing Office’s website.Contact Nicolas Sonnenburg at nsonnenburg@scu.edu or call (408) 554-4852

The three Mexico City teams have been shuffling pieces around
though Cruz Azul is the only team in the capital to have made a real splash
We're three weeks out from the start of the Apertura 2024 and Liga MX clubs continue to ponder roster moves though few big deals were brokered in the past week
Two-time defending champions América don't have a need to reload but that might change if they sell some of their surplus talent
The one move the Aguilas are making is finding an experienced back-up for All-Liga MX goalie Luis Malagón
América is finalizing a deal to bring two-time Liga MX champion netminder Rodolfo Cota aboard
would be a reliable back-stop especially as Malagón picked up an injury as the season wound down (Malagón was sent back home from El Tri training camp and will miss out on the Copa América where he was expected to be Mexico's starting goalie)
Cota starred for Guadalajara for three years
leading the Chivas to Liga MX glory in 2017 and
He then moved to León where he's stood tall between the pipes for six years
helping the Esmeraldas win one Liga MX title (2020) as well as a Concacaf Champions League title (2023)
Across town at Cruz Azul's La Noria headquarters, reporters recorded the arrival of Giorgios Giakoumakis and Andrés Montaño. The pair were in Mexico City to undergo physicals while the front office dotted the i's and crossed the t's on their contracts
We mentioned the Giakoumakis signing earlier this week
but the Montaño acquisition was still up in the air
Now it looks like Cementeros coach Martín Anselmi has two big questions answered: a target man at the point of attack and a young playmaker who could soon become the focal point of the Cruz Azul engine room
Montaño just returned to Mexico after being among the final cuts from El Tri's Copa América roster and Cruz Azul quickly closed the deal to bring the 22-year-old midfielder into camp
Going out the door (again) is winger Christian Tabó
Cruz Azul sent the Uruguayan veteran out on loan to UNAM this past season and coach Anselmi does not have plans to include him on the roster
Puebla seems to be the likely destination for the unwanted Tabó and Puebla is desperate for some playmakers after finishing last a season ago
Tabó would be returning to the scene of his best years in Liga MX as he spent five years with the Camoteros (2017-2022)
the Pumas have done little thus far even as coach Gustavo Lema has a lengthy wish list after "los felinos" tumbled into an 8th-place finish this past season
To date, the only actions UNAM has taken is to release four players. Leaving the CU are veteran playmaker Eduardo Salvio
midfielder Jesús Molina and left back Adrián Aldrete
All three of these players are on the back end of their respective careers
with Salvio being the youngest of the trio at 33
The Pumas could have a big hole to fill as they toy with the idea of selling their most valuable player – winger César Huerta. Currently with El Tri preparing for the Copa América, the 23-year-old Huerta has gotten interest from several European clubs including Lazio
Huerta joined UNAM from the Chivas in July 2022 and has blossomed into one of the best playmaking wings in Liga MX
The Guadalajara native had 7 assists last season (second-most in Liga MX) and led the Pumas with 8 goals the season before that
There had been whispers that the Pumas are trying to entice forward Marquinhos to leave Ferencvaros to join Liga MX but there hasn't been much movement on that front lately
Other targets to fill positions of need are Maxi Meza (winger with Monterrey) and 23-year-old fullback Mauricio Isaias (Toluca)
Meza could fill the spot vacated by Salvio while Isaias – a Liga MX champions while with Pachuca – would be a nice replacement for Aldrete

On Wednesday, the Crew faced Liga MX's Club America for the Campeones Cup in a winner-take-all match at Lower.com Field. When regulation finished in a 1-1 draw, the game went straight to penalty kicks and after seven attempts from each team, Club America captured the trophy with a 5-4 victory in the shootout.
Replay: Columbus Crew lose Campeones Cup, falling to Club America 5-4 in PKs
The Crew and Club America were evenly matched throughout the shootout
starting with a make with their first attempts
After both goalkeepers recorded a save the opponent's sixth attempt
the two teams' lockstep came to an end when Amundsen stepped up for his penalty kick
Amundsen was coming off his first goal of the season in regulation
which tied and eventually sent the match to a shootout
standing just feet away on the side of the goal
Amundsen's shot went high on Malagon's left
the question of if the attempt should be retaken was left to the officials' discretion
"I know there's a little gray area in the wording of the rules," Ramirez said
my understanding is if he would’ve dove that way
that's the fine line of losing in penalties."
According to the FIFA penalty kick guidelines
if there's goalkeeper violation on an attempt that hits the crossbar
the attempt is only retaken if the player was impacted by the violation
Based on the decision not to have Amundsen retake his shot
the officials felt Amundsen wasn't impacted by Malagon's violation
When referring back to the no-call following the game
Nancy could only laugh at the irony of the decision
I know that he wants to do his job well," Nancy said
"He did a good job during the PKs to tell the players you have to put the ball on the line
they did not have the right to move and they were not able to touch the crossbar and so on
the obvious call on the PK with the goalkeeper in front
And they (the officials) said that the PK (violation) didn't affect the shot on the goal and the fact that we missed the goal
At the center of the penalty kick controversy for the Crew was Amundsen
Amundsen missed that seventh and final attempt for Columbus
Club America's Nestor Araujo stepped up and hit the last penalty kick of the game by sending the ball to the left of Schulte to win the trophy
it was Amundsen who having one of the best games of his season on both sides of the field
Amundsen was a key reason the defense held Club America to one goal
and also found the one opening in Club America's defense off a corner kick in the 77th minute
"I saw Christian (Ramirez) was gonna get his head on the ball," Amundsen said
"And I just tried to get in front of the guy in case he didn't hit the goal
the 26-year-old finished the game on a sour note
With Amundsen's four years of experience in MLS
Amundsen says he knows how to move past this type of outcome
"I'm a product of things that happened to me before
"And that is ups and downs and sometimes you got to learn from things and that hopefully will put you in a better situation going forward.”
Before the penalty kick no-call would frustrate the Crew
there were no-calls from the officials during regulation that Columbus players had already voiced their opinions on throughout the match
the Crew had recorded 13 fouls compared to Club America's 11
but in the first half the margin was much wider
Columbus had recorded nine fouls and Club America had three
"We just want it to be as even as possible with certain plays
I think we controlled ourselves and started to dictate the game
The preseason friendly match between FC Juárez and Club América Sunday night, which ended in a 1-1 draw, didn't need long to establish that it was not a typical Sun Bowl event
An hour and a half before kickoff the line to get in any entrance was more than 100 yards long
which is about 90 minutes earlier than the typical El Paso crowd arrives
The line was still 100 yards long at the 7:37 p.m
kickoff when the temperature had dipped to 98 degrees
a number of fans at the stadium's southeast entrance stormed the gates to accelerate matters
Some fans may have used the gate crashing to sneak in some flares, which were detonated in the 80th minute. Emboldened by success, several thousand fans stormed the field after the game, the first storming of the Sun Bowl field since UTEP beat No. 11 Houston in 2009
Much of that was a mobbing of America midfielder Alejandro Zendejas, a Juárez native who grew up in El Paso and went to Hornedo Middle School before being picked up by FC Dallas
"I went to the bench area to say hello to my family
"Then I noticed out of nowhere a bunch of people started running toward me
It's crazy how much people love this club."
Once fans got into the stadium, they cued up in another line, to get a pregame autograph and a picture with star Club América keeper Luis Malagon (also the Mexican national team keeper)
who was out with injury but still putting in a hard day of work for delighted fans
As for the crowd, judging from jerseys and the reception for the teams, it was about 75% for the Liga MX's reigning champions from Mexico City
"It's always important when América comes over here on the Borderland to represent," Malagon said in Spanish after the game
"This reception says a lot about the support of the team."
an El Pasoan at the game with her husband and son Aaron
Aaron knew he wasn't going to see his favorite player
but was still fired up to see his favorite team in person
Once a year Club América makes it to Juárez for a Liga MX road game
but when that happens the 19,000-seat Estadio Benito Juárez often sells out on the presale to season ticket holders
For Borderland fans, this preseason friendly, with both teams playing large rosters as they angle toward their July 5 and 6 openers, was the easiest way to see Club América. They were last in the Sun Bowl in 2009 when they played a preseason friendly against Mexico's third most popular team, Cruz Azul
This was FC Juárez's first-ever Sun Bowl game, though they played at Southwest University Park against the Locomotive in March
Attendance for this game was announced at 29,432
bigger than any UTEP football game last year and it looked fuller than that
Cindy Buenrostro and Jorge Casteneda were among the early fans in who got their picture taken with Malagon
I didn't think we were going to make it but we did," Buenrostro said of getting her Club América jersey autographed by Malagon
"We've been waiting for this ever since they announced it," Casteneda said
"This is my first time to see Club América
(The Sun Bowl) should do this more often."
Ivan Rodriguez was in the minority of fans wearing a Bravos jersey
but the Juárense was ready to support his team
just 20 minutes down the street," Rodriguez said
"It's surprising (América fans were such a majority) but they are popular team
El Paso is home to backup FC Juárez keeper Benny Diaz
who for once didn't have to commute across a bridge to go to work
He drives past the Sun Bowl every day on his trip from his West Side home to Juárez but had never been inside
I hope the people are happy with what they got to see," Diaz said
"Twenty-nine thousand people is more than Benito Juárez can put in
On the field, Juárez started a first-choice lineup and América did not, as seven of its starting 11 were 20-years-old or younger. The teams had unlimited subs and took advantage of that. Juárez also took advantage of Club America's young starting lineup and got its dream start in the fifth minute when Ángel Zaldivar blasted a shot into the net
which drew a roar from the outnumbered Bravos fans
Club América had a penalty kick saved after an FC Juárez foul that looked like it occurred outside the penalty area. There was no replay in this game, which didn't keep all 11 Bravos from surrounding the official and pointing at the video board. Juárez keeper Sebastian Jurado saved Miguel Vázquez's attempt
Diaz also saved a penalty shot from Esteban Lozano in the 72nd minute but Vasquez banged in the rebound to tie the game
The crowd's biggest cheer came when Zendejas
"It's incredible to see the stadium pretty packed

will miss the 2024 Copa America after suffering a muscular injury
Mexican goalkeeper Luis Malagon will not participate in the upcoming Copa America after suffering a muscular injury
which will take up to four weeks to recover
His position in the national team will be taken by Carlos Acevedo
"I can confirm the news regarding Angel Malagon," Mexico's manager Jaime Lozano said on Friday
"Unfortunately he's been injured and he had to return to his club
There won't be enough time for him to recover and take part in the Copa America
who will take (Malagon's) place for the Copa America."
Neither Malagon nor Acevedo has made many appearances for Mexico
Rangel started in their 4-0 loss to Uruguay earlier this week
Mexico's long-serving goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa has played 150 games
he was excluded from the roster along with Hirving Lozano and Raul Jimenez
"We are two years away from our World Cup," Mexico's sporting director Duilo Davino said
"We have our spot secured and we want to take advantage of this great opportunity to not think about the immediacy of the result and project our path to 2026."
This year's Copa America will begin on June 20 and end on July 14 in the U.S
The last time they competed at the tournament was in 2016 and they made the quarterfinals
They were runners-up in both 1993 and 2001
Disinformation report hotline: 010-85061466
On Friday, it was learned that Malagón will be out for three to four weeks due to a muscle tear in the gluteal area. He will also miss Copa America, the continental tournament that will be played from June 20 to July 14 in 14 venues in the United States, including AT&T Stadium in Arlington
Malagón is projected to replace Guillermo Ochoa, who has been the starting goalkeeper for the Mexico National Team for almost 20 years
Mexico’s coach Jaime Lozano did not call Ochoa to the Copa America roster; therefore
Malagón is expected to be the generational change of guard in El Tri’s goal
would be Mexico’s goalkeeper at Kyle Field
will replace Malagón in the Copa America roster

Infections might inhibit the formation of new alveolar bone during bone graft augmentation
Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro osteogenic behavior of human bone marrow stem cells and assess the antimicrobial response to 3D-printed porous scaffolds using propolis-modified wollastonite
Methodology: A fractional factorial design of experiments was used to obtain a 3D printing paste for developing scaffolds with a triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) gyroid geometry based on wollastonite and modified with an ethanolic propolis extract
The antioxidant activity of the extracts was characterized using free radical scavenging methods (DPPH and ABTS)
Cell proliferation and osteogenic potential using Human Bone Marrow Stem Cells (bmMSCs) were assessed at different culture time points up to 28 days
MIC and inhibition zones were studied from single strain cultures
and biofilm formation was evaluated on the scaffolds under co-culture conditions
The mechanical strength of the scaffolds was evaluated
Results: Through statistical design of experiments
a paste suitable for printing scaffolds with the desired geometry was obtained
Propolis extracts modifying the TPMS gyroid scaffolds showed favorable cell proliferation and metabolic activity with osteogenic potential after 21 days
which may be related to the antimicrobial effectiveness of the scaffolds against S
The mechanical properties of the scaffolds were not affected by propolis impregnation
Conclusion: These results demonstrate that propolis-impregnated porous wollastonite scaffolds might have the potential to stimulate bone repair in maxillofacial tissue engineering applications
The present study aimed to evaluate the in vitro osteogenic behavior of Human Bone Marrow Stem Cells (bmMSCs) and assess the antimicrobial response to 3D-printed porous scaffolds
Propolis was obtained from a community of beekeepers operating in the municipality of Tame
All propolis samples were stored at 4°C before the extraction process
Ethanolic extracts of propolis (EEPs) were prepared by mixing 10 g of each propolis sample with 100 mL of 70% (v/v) ethanol
The mixture was then stirred for 24 h at a controlled speed of 120 rpm at room temperature and filtered by gravity
The filtrates were stored in the freezer for 12 h at −6°C and then re-filtered to remove waxes
The solvent was removed from the solutions using a rotary evaporator (RE-20000E
China) at 40°C and pressure of 2.5 bar until the volume was reduced to one-third of the initial volume
The antioxidant activity of the EEPs was assessed using the 2,2′-Azino-bis [3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid] (ABTS) assay and the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging capacity assay
where AABTS denotes the absorbance of ABTS and AS denotes that of the sample
Values were expressed as the mean of three replicates
All comparisons were made using the ANOVA test with a Tukey post hoc test
Differences were considered significant for values of p ≤ 0.05
where ADPPH denotes the absorbance of DPPH and AS denotes that of the sample
Factors used in the experimental design for paste formulation and their levels
The refinement of the formulation was carried out after establishing an initial formula and conducting a rheological fluidity analysis
a DELTA WASP 2040 3D printer (Italy) was used with modifications to the print head
which allowed the attachment of a 5-mL syringe with an 18-G needle
The scaffolds were printed according to a gyroid infill pattern
The printed samples had a cylindrical external shape of 15 mm in diameter and 5 mm in height
The G code for printing was developed using the Cura software (v
a height of 0.4 mm was set for the first layer and 0.7 mm for the following layers using a line width of 0.3 mm
The infill density was 10% and the infill line distance was 1.5 mm
The TPMS gyroid geometry was used with an overlap of 5%
the print speed was 3 mm/s and the travel speed was 40 mm/s
The printed samples were left to dry at room temperature for 24 h and then subjected to heat treatment in an oven (SX1700
the samples were further dried for 1 h at 200°C
then incubated at 500°C for 3 h to eliminate organic residues
and finally stored at 1180°C for 3 h
which corresponds to the sintering temperature of wollastonite particles
the samples were left to cool naturally inside the oven
The scaffolds were desinfected with 70% ethanol for 30 min and impregnated with EEPs through vacuum absorption
20 μL of EEPs was placed on the scaffold’s surface and then subjected to a positive pressure in a chamber (Wiropress
The absorption was verified by the color change of the scaffold and the process was repeated until the total volume absorbed was 150 μL
Bone regeneration devices might produce variations in the pH in the microenvironment
the variations in pH observed when propolis-impregnated (pIS) and non-impregnated scaffolds (n-IS) were immersed in 100 mL of phosphate-buffered saline (PBS
The pH was measured using a PH700 benchtop pH meter (Apera
Measurements were taken every hour for 70 h
The antimicrobial activity of the propolis-impregnated and non-impregnated scaffolds was evaluated using a co-culture of S
epidermidis (ATCC 12228) according to the procedure described by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI)
The strains were pre-inoculated Mueller-Hinton agar (Merck
Germany) and incubated at 37°C for 24 h
the strains were grown to the exponential phase in BHI medium (Merck
Germany) at 37°C for 24 h and adjusted by diluting fresh cultures until a turbidity equivalent to 90 NTU (approximately 1.5 × 108 CFU/mL) was obtained
serial dilutions were made to a concentration of 1.5 × 106 CFU/mL and mixed in equal parts to obtain the co-culture
To determine the MIC of S. aureus and S. epidermidis under monoculture conditions, serial dilutions were made in broth in 96-well microplates. Briefly, 50 μL of Mueller- Hinton broth (Merck, United States) and 50 μL of the EEP were added in each well, according to the procedure described by the CLSI with some modifications (Seidel et al., 2008)
A stock solution of 50 mg/mL EEP was prepared and then diluted in Mueller-Hinton broth by serial dilutions (1:2
v/v) to achieve concentrations ranging from 50 to 1000 μg/mL in the microplates
To the wells containing different concentrations of EEP
50 μL of bacterial suspension (approximately 1.5 × 106 CFU/mL) was added
50 μL of resazurin solution (100 μg/mL) was added and the plates were incubated at 37°C for 2 h
Blue staining indicates lack of bacterial growth for S
whereas pink staining indicates bacterial growth
Ethanol in Mueller-Hinton broth (70% v/v) was used as a control for the solvent used in the extracts
and Mueller-Hinton broth was used as a negative control
MIC values were defined as the concentration that inhibited bacterial growth for both strains evaluated
epidermidis (1.5 × 108 CFU/mL) were prepared separately to assess the inhibitory effect using the Kirby–Bauer technique
1 mL of suspension was taken and spread on plates containing Mueller-Hinton agar medium using a swab
The propolis-impregnated and non-impregnated scaffolds were placed onto inoculated plates
Paper discs of 5 mm diameter were soaked with saline solution (negative control) and chlorhexidine Digluconate at 0.2% (positive control
the plates were incubated at 37°C for 24 h and its antimicrobial activity was evaluated by measuring the diameter of the growth inhibition zone in millimeters (including the disc diameter) using ImageJ software
Propolis-impregnated and non-impregnated scaffolds were used for the co-culture biofilm formation assay
Each group of scaffolds was incubated with 1 mL of the co-culture for 24h and 48 h at 37°C
The culture medium was renewed every 16 h
the scaffolds were washed three times with PBS to remove the non-adhered bacteria
Viability tests were conducted on the biofilm adhered to the discs
3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) was added and incubated for 2 h
and absorbance was measured at 550 nm using a spectrophotometer (Zeiss
Cell proliferation was evaluated at day (1, 3, 7, 14, 21 and 28) using Alamar Blue assay. Cultures were incubated for 1.5 h and fluorescence was quantified using a multiplate reader (Tecan Infinite M200 Nanoquant, United States) at 570 nm (excitation wavelength) and 600 nm (emission wavelength) (Leal-Marin et al., 2021)
The results were expressed as the percentage of viability found in the scaffolds relative to the control samples sown in the wells without scaffolds
cell morphology and adhesion on scaffolds were characterized via SEM (S3400N
Cells were treated in cacodylate buffer (0.1M
Germany) and dehydrated using a series of graded ethanol solutions (25%–99%
the samples were coated with a 35 nm Au-Pd layer (Minisputter–SC7620
A histochemical characterization was conducted for a qualitative assessment of osteogenesis
which involved identifying calcium deposits on the scaffolds using von Kossa staining
measuring alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity
A total of 25,000 cells/cm2 were seeded on the propolis-impregnated and non-impregnated scaffolds in 24-well plates
These cells were then maintained under the culture conditions described above and cultured in a differentiation medium from day 7 to day 28
during which the cells were fixed with 3% glutaraldehyde (Merck
Germany) for 15 min and subsequently washed with PBS (Merck
For von Kossa staining, 1 mL of 1% silver nitrate (Merck, Germany) was added to the scaffolds, which were then exposed to UV light for 1 h. Subsequently, the scaffolds were rinsed with distilled water and 1 mL of 5% sodium thiosulfate (Merck, Germany) was added for 3 min. Finally, the scaffolds were rinsed again with distilled water and allowed to air dry (Sundaram and Milton, 2017)
For Alizarin red staining, scaffolds were treated with 4 nM sterile Alizarin red solution (Merck, Germany) for 2 min and washed with deionized water. Then, 10 mM HCl in 70% ethanol was added for 15 s. The scaffolds were left to air dry (Abbasi et al., 2020)
a solution of Na-naphthyl phosphate (Merck
The solution was stirred for 10 min
This solution (1 mL) was added to the scaffolds
following which the scaffolds were stored in the dark for 1 h
The scaffolds subjected to these stains were observed under an optical stereomicroscope (Stemi DV4
Scaffolds without cell culture with each of the stains were used as a staining control on the material
These experiments were conducted in triplicate
The scaffolds were subjected to quasi-static monotonic compression tests using a UTS (Universal Testing System
United States) with a 10 kN load cell at a rate of 0.5 mm/min
The tests recorded compression load and displacements
with the maximum load or failure load used to determine the maximum compressive strength of each scaffold sample
Samples were tested after sintering and following 21 and 28 days of cell culture to identify any potential mechanical response changes
All experiments were performed in triplicate
The results were expressed as mean ± standard deviation
Statistical analysis was performed using the SPSS Statistics software (V21
An unpaired Student’s t-test was used to assess significance of differences between experimental groups and comparison of % viability between different days was performed using the one-way ANOVA test with post hoc Tukey method
Values of p ≤ 0.05 were considered statistically significant
The tests conducted to assess the antioxidant activity of the EEPs demonstrated their effectiveness against the two analyzed radicals. The DPPH method identifies low-polarity compounds capable of neutralizing DPPH free radicals through hydrogen donation, while the ABTS method assesses the activity of both hydrophilic and lipophilic compounds. The results of the antioxidant activity of the EEPs are presented in Figure 1
The EEPs exhibited an antioxidant activity of 55.4% ± 1% with the DPPH method and 36.2% ± 1% with the ABTS method
displayed values of 79.7% ± 2% and 50.8% ± 1% in the DPPH and ABTS assays
indicating that the EEPs contain both polar and hydrophilic components
enabling them to effectively neutralize free radicals through diverse mechanisms
Antioxidant activity of ethanolic extracts of propolis (EEPs) and positive control Trolox solution (Trolox) determined via DPPH and ABTS assays

as well as the (C) 3D structure of the macropore walls
Figure 3 displays the curves representing variations in pH over time for both the propolis-impregnated and non-impregnated scaffolds
the distilled water in which the samples were immersed had a pH value of 7.5
regardless of the type of sample being immersed
an increase in pH was observed in the solution containing the propolis-impregnated scaffolds
reaching a pH value of 8.5 after 30 h and remaining stable thereafter
the solutions with the non-impregnated reached a maximum pH of 8.2
These variations suggests that the EEPs create more alkaline environments
which may have a detrimental effect on acidophilic bacterial species
pH measurement of propolis-impregnated scaffolds (IS) and non-impregnated scaffolds (n-IS) over 72 h
Antimicrobial activity was evaluated using three different methodologies: MIC and inhibition zones were studied from single strain cultures
The MIC for each strain evaluated were defined as the lowest concentration at which bacterial growth inhibition was observed
The EEPs exhibited inhibitory effects against the two strains evaluated
with a propolis concentration of 1.1 ± 0.5 mg/mL required to inhibit S
aureus and 1.7 ± 0.3 mg/mL required to inhibit S
Figure 4 displays the measurements of the inhibition zones observed during the test
These measurements indicate the antimicrobial effect of the EEPs against the two strains
These findings align with the results of the MIC test
where the lower concentration of propolis required to inhibit the growth of S
resulting in larger inhibition zones compared with those observed for S
epidermidis at the same propolis concentration
the antimicrobial activity of propolis was significantly lower than that of the positive control against both strains
The positive control exhibited inhibition zones of 18.87 ± 0.6 mm and 17.54 ± 0.5 mm against S
whereas the EEPs exhibited zones of 15.72 ± 0.3 mm and 8.45 ± 0.2 mm
and the pIS exhibited zones of 13.43 ± 0.07 mm and 10.97 ± 0.6 mm
(A) Measurement of the inhibition zones of the EEPs
(B) Viability of biofilm formation after 24 and 48 h of culture on n-IS and pIS against a co-culture of S
D) Images of the inhibition zones of the EEPs
and saline solution (C−) against S
F) Measurement of the inhibition zones of the US and TS against S
Results are expressed as means ± SD (n = 3)
Significance levels are denoted as follows: **p ≤ 0.05 indicates a significant difference
while (ns) denotes a non-significant difference
All the measurements of the inhibition zones are expressed in mm
the results of biofilm formation by the co-culture reveal a significant reduction in bacterial viability on the pIS compared with the n-IS at both evaluated time points
the absorbance value in the pIS scaffolds was 1.10 ± 0.05 u
the pIS scaffolds exhibited a value of 1.71 ± 0.06 u.a.
whereas the n-IS exhibited a value of 1.94 ± 0.1 u
clearly demonstrating the effective control of bacterial viability provided by the EEPs
The bmMSCs proliferation was assessed using the Alamar Blue assay with different time-points (1–28 days)
The % viability values for the pIS group exhibited statistically significant differences (p = 0.01) between early stages (1 and 7 days) and later stages (14
The n-IS group showed a similar trend (p = 0.01)
This behavior indicates the transition from the proliferation to the differentiation phases of cultures
(A) Viability (%) propolis-impregnated scaffolds (pIS) and non-impregnated scaffolds (n-IS)
E) pIS after 21 and 28 days of culture
Symbol (**) denote statistically significant differences (p ≤ 0.05)
Arrows indicate cells at different spreading stages
Scaffolds used as staining controls did not display any significant color change upon the application of staining reagents
von Kossa staining of bmMSC cultures on (A–C) non-impregnated scaffolds (n-IS)
(D–F) propolis-impregnated scaffolds (pIS)
and (G–I) tissue culture polystyrene TCPS
Alizarin red staining of bmMSC cultures on (A–C) non-impregnated scaffolds (n-IS)
Contrary to the findings obtained with von Kossa staining
calcium deposits were more prevalent in the pIS than in the n-IS after 28 days of culture
some color change was also observed in the control scaffolds (those not subjected to cell culture)
only regions displaying intense staining were considered positive results
Alizarin red staining revealed the presence of calcium deposits in the internal layers with pronounced staining
This pattern was consistent at both time points and in both scaffold groups
Additionally, staining was performed to visualize ALP activity, as it serves as a marker for the initial phase of osteogenic differentiation. The results of the ALP staining are presented in Figure 8
ALP activity exhibited higher intensity in the n-IS
ALP activity was also detected in the pIS after 21 days of culture
The regions displaying the highest activity were primarily located at the corners and areas with pronounced curvatures
the scaffolds used as staining controls exhibited a faint brown hue
significantly less intense than that observed in the scaffolds exposed to cell culture
ALP staining of bmMSC cultures on (A–C) untreated scaffolds (n-IS)
This change can be attributed to cell adhesion to the scaffold
resulting in the removal of wollastonite particles from certain areas of the surface
thus affecting the repeatability of the results
Mechanical response of propolis-impregnated scaffolds (pIS) and non-impregnated scaffolds (n-IS)
No significant differences were observed between sample sets
This supports the idea that the porosity achieved through additive manufacturing of ceramic scaffolds is well-suited for repairing bone lesions
the impregnation of the scaffolds with propolis had no detrimental effects on their mechanical properties
The porous scaffolds created through 3D printing with TPMS gyroid geometry exhibited mechanical properties suitable for repairing trabecular bone tissue
impregnating the scaffolds with EEPs demonstrated effective control over bacterial growth associated with the development of osteomyelitis
a common cause of implant failure in bone repair procedures
antimicrobial activity was observed against S
This antimicrobial effect may be attributed to the presence of phenolic compounds and flavonoids
which are also responsible for the antioxidant activity identified in this study
the scaffolds impregnated with EEPs promoted the proliferation of stem cells derived from bone marrow
along with progress in the mineralization process after 28 days of culture
These findings open new avenues for further research on utilizing EEPs to maintain antimicrobial activity while minimizing their impact on the cellular microenvironment

Here are three of those players who could play a key role for El Tri
Tickets are still available to watch Mexico take on Jamaica during El Tri's opening match of the CONMEBOL Copa América 2024™ on June 22 at NGR Stadium in Houston, Texas. Tickets are available here
Edson Álvarez -26 years old- if chosen by Lozano
will enter the oldest national team tournament in the world as one of Mexico’s most experienced players
Álvarez is at the center of the new generation of players who are entering their prime
the young midfielder began his professional career with Club América
He would go on to play 86 Liga MX games for the Mexican giants
His defensive acumen was scouted by Ajax of the Dutch Eredivisie, whom he would join in 2019. Ajax, long famous for its development model, found another rising star in Álvarez. He would make over 100 appearances for the Dutch club and be nominated for the Eredivisie Player of the Year award in 2021
the defensive midfielder took his talents to the Premier League and joined West Ham United
Álvarez has already appeared in two World Cups (2018 and 2022) and has won the CONCACAF Gold Cup twice (2019
He has more than 75 appearances for his country and holds the record for the youngest Mexican player to score a goal in the CONCACAF Gold Cup when he did so against Curacao in 2017
but it may be time for Luis Malagón to finally occupy the Aztec goal
where Guillermo Ochoa shone for almost 20 years and more than 150 games
Currently, Malagón is in a moment of growth. ESPN named him the best player of Clausura 2024
and his heroic saves helped Las Águilas secure their 15th Liga MX title
The 27-year-old now hopes to carry his brilliant club form to his national team if Lozano selects him for the CONMEBOL Copa América 2024™
the goalkeeper has only made four appearances for Mexico before this tournament
He made his Liga MX debut with Moreila in 2019 before moving to Necaxa
where he would eventually earn the starting job
He was in goal during the 2023 Apertura championship victory and the 2024 Clausura championship victory
Both Mexico and Malagón hope that in this year's CONMEBOL Copa América™ the goalkeeper will continue to maintain his meteoric rise
Arguably Mexico's greatest young talent
Santiago Giménez hopes to carry his fantastic club form into CONMEBOL Copa América 2024™
Giménez moved to Mexico at the age of three following his father's move from Independiente to Veracruz
Son of former Mexican international Christian Giménez
football was always in the young forward's blood
His father spent the last part of his career at Cruz Azul in Liga MX and that is where the young Giménez would begin his professional career
the scorer would win the Liga MX Guardianes in 2021
the Campeón de Campeones in 2021 and the Copa MX Apertura in 2018
Giménez's play would allow him to move up to the Eredivisie
where he would help Feyenoord win the 2022-23 league championship and the 2023-24 KNVB Cup
In his final season with Feyenoord, he scored 23 goals, the third most in the league, and also scored in the UEFA Champions League for the first time when he scored a brace against Lazio last October. Giménez's goals during 2023 were so impressive that he broke Uruguayan legend Luis Suárez's record for most Eredivisie goals scored in a calendar year, when he scored 31 in 2023.
Internationally, the 23-year-old's finest moment for Mexico came in the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup final, when he scored the winning goal against Panama to help his country win the tournament. Looking ahead to the CONMEBOL Copa América 2024™, part of the scoring hope lies in the feet of Giménez.
has generated consternation on social media
where several acquaintances of the minor and his family have shown deep sadness about the tragedy
there is little information surrounding the event
The minor was a native of Villa Clara and has been identified as Eblys Malagón Díaz
The independent media Cubans around the World asserted -quoting its own sources- that the child drowned in a reservoir during a camping trip
Almost 24 hours after receiving the sad news of your death
a brilliant child in every sense of the word
I don't know what God was so busy with when he let go of your hand and let you die," wrote Yerisley Ríos Guevara from the USA
I can't help but wonder what will become of your family's life
when you were everything to them," added the Cuban woman in a heartfelt post that has been shared multiple times
generating numerous messages of pain and condolences
How much I wish I could be with you right now
I just want to tell you to stay strong to keep moving forward
your son will be in the best place in heaven
you will be one more star," Ríos Guevara concluded
Family members and friends have turned to social networks to bid farewell to the child
the deceased teenager has been described as a "wonderful" and "exceptional" child
there are no other details about the sad event
which unfortunately is not the first of its kind in recent months
two young people drowned at Sardinero Beach in Santiago de Cuba
were swimming at that dangerous stretch of coast where swimming is officially prohibited
The first young woman who died was identified as Rachel Mora Torres
20 years old and a resident of Mangos de Baraguá
as confirmed in that case on social media by Aris Arias Batalla
The other deceased was Yasel Alberto Bicet
also 20 years old and a resident of the Abel Santamaría neighborhood
two Cuban teenagers aged 14 and 16 drowned while fishing in a river in a rural community in the Vertientes municipality
the tragic accident occurred in the small village of Concordia
located near the sugar mill Batalla de las Guásimas

Women's Leadership & The World of Retail: Insights from a Global CEOFollow AuthorOct 02
12:26pm EDTShareSaveThis article is more than 3 years old.Camila Malagon
Camila Malagon lost both of her parents at the young age of twenty-one
she started her fashion consulting agency representing small Latinx fashion designers and helped them to enter the U.S
Camila has a laser sense for spotting new and hot brands; she has quickly built a successful U.S
business and now taking a bold move into the global market
Angela Chan: When did you establish Malagon Group
Camila Malagon: Malagon Group was established in 2017
I moved back to Colombia following the death of my parents
intending to connect with my roots after being raised in the U.S
It was supposed to be a quick trip with plans to head back to NYC
but local designers suddenly started to reach out to me and asked me to help them get into the U.S
Suddenly - and unintentionally - I found myself consulting in Colombia
I was fluent in the industry's language and had relationships with many key players
It's been four years since I first moved to Colombia
I have cultivated excellent relationships with retail partners like Net-A-Porter
It's at these retailers that I've introduced most of the brands I have now
Malagon Group is a fashion consulting agency representing various emerging fashion brands globally
We now have an incredible turnaround time for new clients because we see results within the first semester
We've zeroed in on a six to an eight-month period where we perfect branding and collections before it's ready for market
When we get started with a client or new campaign
I'm working hand in hand with the brand
reviewing designs with commercial strategy in mind
I trust every person on our team to divide and conquer
Whether in design or even tech and data analysis
everyone is in it together to hit the timeline we set for ourselves
Malagon: My first "big" break was getting three brands (Waimari
Juan De Dios & Verdelimon) into Intermix all in one season
We're currently focusing on the expansion that targets Europe and the West Coast markets
we're meeting with the U.K.'s top retailers such as Net-A-Porter
and more to widen the distribution overseas
we're opening offices in Los Angeles to take on more brands beyond LatAm beginning in 2022
We want to have a smart approach to the fashion-tech aspect of the industry
focusing on data-backed markets and trends that will ultimately enable more growth across the board
I'm constantly thinking about how to maximize creative initiatives in the fashion world
to make sure that every one of my brands gives back in some way
one brand guaranteed that every bathing suit sold results in a tree planted
where the tags themselves are made of carrot seeds
so if you drop them anywhere - even in New York - they'll sprout
The brands I started with are very resort/swim focused but in a way that reflects Colombia's strength in that category
I signed on my first athleisure brand called MUV Active
which I'm personally very excited about
we got Bandier to pick up the brand with Dallas
which has caught the eye of major editors and buyers worldwide in a very short amount of time
maintaining our Latin American brands while simultaneously expanding into brands from France
Chan: Who are your favorite Latinx fashion designers
that's a bit of a trick question - but Carolina Herrera has always been a favorite
which was my first introduction to the iconic brand
Chan: What's your philosophy on spotting new designers that will be a success
I know when I see something special in the brand
even if the product is not something I'd wear myself
I think I have a particular strength in having a super clear vision of the capabilities of each designer
and when I take on new brands within a pre-existing client category
so I'm very particular about how much we take on and how fast
I originally wanted to oversee every step of every project I'm involved in
I have - for better or worse - the mind of a perfectionist
Another business philosophy is prioritizing client and buyer relationships in a detail-oriented
and intimate way that makes clients feel heard and prioritized
Whether meeting one-on-one with buyers or with my clients at their homes
and the progress we have made with the majority of the brands we currently represent at Malagon Group and it has been mind-blowing
I think my relationship with the buyers is something that is my most valuable asset
Malagon: The best example I can give you is that I signed with a swimwear brand called Baobab in August 2020
an account the brand got themselves while attending a trade show
the brand has already launched at stores like Intermix
resulting in a 260% growth and we are expanding the brand's international distribution
It's that kind of growth that fuels me and keeps me going
but it's so rewarding to see results from our hard work
The hard part is I'm about to venture into unknown territory that I'm not as familiar with
I'm now completely shifting my headquarters to the west coast
My biggest challenge right now is making sure that my brands don't feel the consequences of my move and continue growing
I want to look to the future as I begin to focus on new territories
But I need to stay innovative and maintain our current success
but I'm excited for me - and terrified
Malagon: I’m always juggling responsibilities and priorities
but I also remember to be grateful and celebrate every win
I’m also a very intuitive person and I have to remember to keep driving this boat
Chan: How have your parents influenced you
Malagon: I inherited my dad's work ethic
he taught me the importance of keeping your word
My mother was a strong woman who also happened to be a model - ever since I can remember; I was surrounded by friends of hers - designers
photographers - who had a huge influence on my taste
She gave me the confidence to stick to my convictions and not be afraid to use my voice or own my opinions
But the strength of my voice and my belief that I can do this
A whole-grilled B-liner snapper is dressed with oil at Taverna Philosophia in Mount Pleasant
The XO Lobster served at XO Brasserie in Charleston
Secreto de cerdo grilled pork skirt steak with quince and pine nuts is served at Malagón in downtown Charleston
A grilled lemon is squeezed out over saganaki flambéed kefalograviera cheese at Taverna Philosophia in Mount Pleasant
Spanish and Chinese food are on the menu at Food Editor Parker Milner's five Charleston restaurants to enjoy right now

He is a Boston College graduate and former professional hockey player who joined The Post and Courier after leading the Charleston City Paper's food section
Diners continue to have difficulties making restaurant reservations in Charleston
Some hot spots seem to fill up the second the bookings drop
and other no-reservation spots can draw long lines
This list of five local restaurants to enjoy right now was curated with that in mind
I’ve had no trouble securing seats at these five Charleston-area restaurants
Three are downtown and two are in Mount Pleasant
Maison is housed in an odd-looking blueish-purple building on King Street
If the shades above the booths are pulled down
passersby might assume the place is closed
Enter by walking through a quiet patio guarded by a mural of the Eiffel Tower
a slim alleyway passes a bar on the left and booths to the right before the room opens up in the back
Woven-backed chairs and brown banquettes line the tables
Coordinated service shines at the downtown restaurant
Waitstaff who want to get to know customers’ names is the exclamation point on an evening of sophisticated French-leaning fare
place a small lamp on the table so an elderly couple doesn’t have to shine their phones over the menu
They’ll summon a slice of buttered bread for a toddler and offer thoughtful guidance for ordering wine
Though located in a high-traffic area downtown
Maison feels like a neighborhood establishment
leaving time to breathe without overextending the meal
Vanderwarker balances the use of chef-driven ingredients — foie gras
saffron — with dishes that scream simplicity
The monkfish chop amandine is honest cooking at its best
a staple at French eateries and a species that is prevalent off the coast of the Carolinas
has been on Maison’s menu since Day 1 — and for good reason
A delicate dose of brown butter jus softens the mound
sweetening the white flesh the longer it sits
Spanish food is diligently cooked with simplicity in mind in chef Juan Cassalett’s tight open kitchen on Spring Street
parties of one or two can be seen grabbing a quick bite after work next to a group of tourists
tables filled with marinated lamb skewers; crab rice; jamón-wrapped grouper; white asparagus with anchovies; and La Bomba de la Barceloneta
a pork-packed mashed potato "bomb" with tomato and aioli
It’s a restaurant that uses consistency as a springboard to explore dishes from all corners of Spain
Cassalett fancies up Spanish dishes found on the country’s list of top hits
grilled pork skirt steak with quince and rossejat negro
squid ink-sauced noodles that arrive piping hot in a cast-iron pan
the fideo noodles are a consistent driving force at Malagón
braised beef belly and grilled turnips with ñora pepper and almond sauce are newer selections that showcase the chef's wide range
Malagón has established itself in a Cannonborough-Elliotborough neighborhood that houses several revered restaurants
I was impressed by the plate of three stout-but-soft white asparagus spears Robert F
Moss highlighted in his August restaurant review
the type of aggressive flavor combination that I'm constantly seeking out in Charleston
Credit goes to Cassalett for being bold enough to put it on his menu
Childhood friends Justin Hunt and Dimitri Hatgidimitriou opened Taverna Philosophia in January
joining Philosophia between Johnnie Dodds and Coleman boulevards in Mount Pleasant
who previously held an executive chef role at Bobby Flay's Bar Americain in New York City
had a stint working at Thomas Keller’s famed California restaurant
But it was another of Keller’s restaurants
that served as inspiration for Taverna Philosophia
which delves into Mediterranean fare through the lens of an American brasserie
The 90-seat spot is the place to go for a “feast,” Hunt told me in February
The lavish spread comes with a side of theatrics
A skillet of blazing cheese is ushered across the dining room
its blue-hued flames stretching beyond a cast-iron skillet
the caramelized kefalograviera isn’t just for show — the bubbly crust is imbued with smoky
I should pause to discuss how one navigates Taverna's large menu
Start your evening with a smattering of cooked and raw plates like the lobster cocktail
Octopus and lobsters are splayed across a bed of ice outside the open kitchen
But it was options from the land that impressed me most during recent visits
I sampled six types of meat over three summer visits to Taverna
marveling in Hunt’s ability to prepare large-format cuts with the bone intact
I was blown away by the char on the Colorado lamb porterhouse
the meat was cooked to a model medium rare
Rack of lamb arrived with the sought-after rosy pink center
This French restaurant opened a few years ago in a Mount Pleasant strip center on Johnnie Dodds Boulevard
who previously operated Annie’s Bistro in Mount Pleasant for five years
Patrons can peruse two paper menus: one for wine by the glass
offers a Lowcountry look into French cuisine
at the restaurant sharing an address with a sushi spot
Duck and chicken pâté — the latter from Storey Farms — were served side by side with blinis on a recent Tuesday
who owns the restaurant with her husband Mark Manly

She cooked farther north before coming to Charleston — first in Middleburg

was given that title in honor of her late mother
A 2010 story by Washington Post food critic Tom Sietsema touted Anne’s white bean soup
herbs and a chicken broth that Carole Robert makes herself.”
She crafts all the dishes to order at Ville Sainte Bistro
And while it might not have the flash and flair of other French restaurants in Charleston
If you’re like the couple next to me the other night
XO Brasserie’s General Tso’s wings hit all the right notes
Petite drumettes and flats are brushed in an orange glaze
Their small stature means each bite comes with a taste of the fried coating
which clings to the bone but slides off the hands with one swipe of a damp napkin
casually delivered by the attentive waitstaff
are among the many signs this is an elegant — but not stuffy — establishment that takes service seriously
the Columbia native and first-generation Chinese immigrant can be seen running food
filling glasses or wiping water off the edges of the sink in the bathroom
modeled after the role his mother played at his parents' Columbia-area restaurants
Ng witnessed the effort it took to run these establishments
so he and his two older brothers would go to the restaurants for lunch and after school to do their homework
finishing mise en place and cooking in the woks
and Ng’s father cooked dishes like steak chow fun — perhaps the only menu crossover between those restaurants and their son’s
whose executive chef is Michael Chanthavang

the story of Michel Muñoz Malagón is one about overcoming adversities
who is currently preparing to compete in rowing at Tokyo 2020
was born with a congenital malformation that prevented his legs from developing
he has used a skateboard to get around independently
But that hasn't stopped him from trying out various sports
and participating in marathons or tough obstacle races
Muñoz Malagón grew up with limited financial resources
His childhood and adolescence were not easy
But sport helped him to grow and keep his enthusiasm
He started playing football and lifting weights in the gym
and ended up becoming the first Latin American athlete without lower limbs to compete in a Spartan Race and an Ironman
"I believe that we have to turn our weaknesses into strengths and knowing that I was missing something
I am able to move and do my things by myself
without depending on anyone," explained the 34-year-old athlete
If there is something that characterises this intrepid athlete
it is his skateboard - the method he has used to move around instead of using a wheelchair since he was 11 years old
“I have always been an independent boy," he said
"I have always liked doing things by myself
and when my grandmother took me to school it was very heavy for her to move my wheelchair"
"I made the decision to use a skateboard in secondary school
The skateboard helped me because I moved much faster and could move around with less effort," he recalled
Muñoz Malagón’s introduction to the world of sport was playing football in a league for amputees
But when he made contact with the Mexican Paralympic Committee
my passion for sport led to me getting a place at university
and I now have a degree in Physical Education and a certification as a personal trainer."
he became the national powerlifting champion in the 59 kg category
But following this victory and with the aim of making it to Tokyo
he decided to change sports and focus on rowing
“My arms are very long and rowing gave me a better chance of securing a spot in Tokyo
I did a test and my coach liked what he saw
I'm going to train very hard every day to achieve my goal.’"
Muñoz Malagón has achieved good results in rowing competitions
he had the opportunity to participate in the World Cup in Linz
he qualified for the final and was ranked first in the D final
“Finishing in first place motivated me a lot more
I realised I had what it takes to go to Tokyo," he said
In the International Brazilian Para Rowing Championship
and in the national regattas of Uruguay and Argentina
Muñoz Malagón’s results meant he came very close to booking his ticket to Tokyo
he learnt about the postponement of the Paralympic Games shortly after returning from Brazil
where he had hoped to confirm his spot in Tokyo during the pre-Paralympic competition
the event was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic
It meant the athlete had to return to Mexico quickly in order to avoid unnecessary risks
“The news of the postponement was sad because we had prepared very well
knowing that you've reached the standard required to qualify for Tokyo and not being able to go
"I have always been a person with very high self-esteem because I have never limited myself
But seeing my dream curtailed could lower my self-esteem
But Tokyo is still the goal and we have to move forward."
the COVID-19 pandemic has also affected Muñoz Malagón's day-to-day life
He has spent a few months at home in lockdown
training with a rowing ergometer that he received on loan from the National Commission of Physical Culture and Sports (CONADE) of Mexico
he received a permit that enabled him to return to the gym
and now a friend takes him to training three times a week
“After five months of just training with the ergo at home
I have not yet been able to go rowing due to the situation
Muñoz Malagón has also run marathons and participated in several Spartan obstacle races
He is only the second person without legs to take part in the competition
“My first Spartan was a 7 1/2 km race with 20 obstacles
I finished it in three and a half hours and I didn't get up for three days
I kept preparing and was able to do 10 Spartan races so far
The athlete also spends a good part of his time giving motivational lectures
Muñoz Malagón believes that his story can help others
“I dare to do what other people do not dare to do for fear of failing
a lot of people who don't even dare to go for a walk or jog
being able to help other people dare to do things," he said with conviction
and until the sports calendar gets back to normal
the Mexican will continue his preparations to be ready for the pre-Paralympic tournament
which will be held in Rio de Janeiro from 28 to 30 January 2021
