The city has spent more than $30 million on settlements since 2020.  You power Denverite! If you love what we do, donate today to support our essential and delightful local news. « Back Debra S rollover around 3 a.m but said he couldn’t confirm the victim’s name New Mexico State Police did not provide details about the fatal crash Sunday In an email informing the Pojoaque Valley High School community of Manzanares’ death Principal Victoria Trujillo wrote mental health providers would be available at the school Monday morning and throughout the week as needed Manzanares’ father could not be reached Sunday His mother said in a message she couldn’t participate in an interview because she was attending a candlelight vigil for her son Manzanares was a two-year varsity player at Pojoaque Valley High and a key player for the Elks during the 2023-24 season Cordova described Manzanares as a “fantastic student who coached Manzanares as a junior last year Cordova said Manzanares did well academically and was probably in the top 20% of his class “Nick was always one of those kids that .. came into people’s lives and just made it better,” Cordova said He scored 6.7 points per game and averaged 3.7 rebounds per game last season as Pojoaque went 12-15 and finished in fourth place in the District 2-4A standings Cordova said Manzanares worked on improving his basketball skills over the summer at the nationally acclaimed Point Guard College a program that helps players learn the nuances of the sport Manzanares was going to be an important part of Pojoaque’s team this year and was a constant presence at early morning practices during the fall He was often one of the first players in the gym for 6:30 a.m he just had the biggest smile on his face,” the coach recalled Cordova told The New Mexican he’d heard from several coaches across the state Sunday including some who had coached Manzanares in football and baseball and his family are very well-known in our community,” Cordova Goddard Softball fields Goddard High School recently hired former player Valaree Manzanares to become their softball coach starting next season Many of the Goddard High School sports teams have hired new coaches over the past few months and they decided on someone who played on the softball team not too long ago — Manzanares “Goddard is home,” Manzanares said with excitement after being asked why she chose this coaching job Manzanares played softball for Goddard starting her sophomore year after she transferred from Roswell High She played both pitcher and first base during her time in high school Her time at Goddard saw a lot of success for her and Goddard would make the all-district team and would be voted the team’s most valuable player Goddard would make the state playoffs for the first time since 2015 and be the sixth seed which was the highest seed they have ever been They also beat Artesia for the first time in 15 years with Manzanares being the one who scored the winning run in the game She would then play at Luna Community College in Las Vegas Manzanares’ playing career came to an end late last year after needing to have reconstructive ankle surgery That decision would lead to her getting the job at Goddard I jumped at the opportunity,” Manzanares said She may have a lot to learn being a younger coach but she does not let that deter her from being the best coach she can be Manzanares feels like she can better resonate with the players due to them being close to age and she can understand the many struggles and situations the players go through since Valaree was in their shoes not too long ago Manzanares also knows that there is a job to do She can’t let the players get away with everything and there needs to be a level of respect and buy-in from the team but the players know that I want to get stuff done and that’s to get the team in a better direction,” Manzanares said Manzanares said that she feels that she has accomplished that The players have been working hard for her in the short time she has been there and they have listened to everything that she recommended The goal of many coaches is to win the championship “There need to be baby steps before we win a state championship,” she explained Then get out of the first round of the playoffs Then we can focus on winning a championship.” Manzanares said she believes that under her guidance Manzanares is currently going through off-season programs with the softball team while also working with the volleyball team She is also finishing her college classes as she hopes to graduate with her bachelor’s degree soon Manzanares wanted to give a shoutout to her many coaches throughout the years That includes Art Sandoval from her time at Roswell High Rebecca Marrujo and Tiffany Bolanos from Goddard and Randy Krutsch from her time at Luna Community College The 2025 Goddard softball season starts in the spring The date of the first game will be determined at a later time Photo pep talk before the Elks' game against Pecos on Dec 22 vehicle rollover on Interstate 25 near Algodones There were days this fall when Jordan Lopez found himself sitting in his first-period class at Pojoaque Valley High School when a little smile began creeping across his face the moment would often fade as quickly as it started and he’d return to sitting in stoic silence “Literally like every day Nick would go to McDonald’s before school and he’d hit me up to see what I wanted,” Lopez says quietly Lopez and Nick Manzanares met in kindergarten instantly drawn to one another by a shared love of sports a similar sense of humor and personalities that meshed from day one All that’s left these days are memories and 12 game jersey Manzanares would have been wearing stretched over the top of a vacant spot on the bench The void left from an unforgettable tragedy that claimed Manzanares’s life is something Lopez and the rest of the Pojoaque Valley boys basketball program are still dealing with the pain still very much resting at the surface died in a one-car rollover on Interstate 25 near Algodones in the early morning hours of Sept Reports say he was driving to his mother’s house in Rio Rancho following his school’s homecoming dance not just for his family but for a team and community that had seen him grow from a quiet little kid into a young man with confidence and untapped potential it still feels like it’s not real,” says teammate Luke Pacheco We were all excited for basketball and now we come to these games and see his mom and his family up in the stands It makes you want to play as hard as you can for them.” Teammate Luke Cordova says Manzanares is a driving force for the Elks When things get rough and the days seem heavy they’re reminded about the spirit their fallen teammate brought to the table every day “We’re out there playing for him,” he says “The thing I’ll always remember about him isn’t the kind of player he was but he’d walk into a room and would be the life of the party and always be messing with kids Ryan Cordova has coached at the high school and college level for most of his adult life having dealt with adversity on and off the court in more ways than he can count When he learned one of his own was taken entirely too soon it left a hole that simply cannot be filled have the ability to leave lasting impressions I close my eyes and I see Nick smiling every day “Days when I’m anxious or maybe feeling a little nervous ‘I got you,’ because that’s the kind of kid he was Perhaps no one has struggled with the accident quite like Lopez He says he can’t recall a single argument he and Manzanares had he would always make me smile,” Lopez says Lopez said he kept to himself a lot after the accident He would instinctively bounce back any time someone needed emotional support because What took a bit longer was letting his own emotions pour out it’s what he would have done and it’s definitely something he would have told me to do,” Lopez says “Our friends let me know it was OK for us to go through it together Manzanares’ friends and teammates remember him as a goofball someone who was generous with his time and wiling to do the little things to keep things interesting hoops and rounding up his guys to go to the gym he came back a different person,” says teammate Mario Baros “He was the clown outside of school and still the same guy after that camp and we’ve just got to do all this for him.” Undefeated heading into this weekend’s championship game of the Ben Lujan Tournament the Elks have been one of the pleasant surprises this season in Class 4A Pacheco says the person who would have been surprised the least over their fast start would have been Manzanares “He told us that’s what we were here to do Nick always expected the best out of all of us Pojoaque is playing like a team driving forward for something bigger than a trophy the one that hangs in the locker room before tipoff the one Ryan Cordova proudly slings over his shoulder as he leaves the gym is a testament to that “I can’t imagine what it’s like for his parents but the whole family continues to support us because they know how much these guys all loved Nick,” he says but hopefully something good comes out of this, Hopefully we honor his memory the way he deserves.” futsal was back at the Palau Blaugrana and Tino Pérez's team responded with last minute 3-2 victory over Manzanares in the second league game of the season The hero of the hour was Antonio Pérez who scored twice his side coming just 10 seconds from the end of the game to give Barça their first win of the campaign The first half was a tricky one for the home side with few goalscoring opportunities Dyego went close for Barça before the visitors took the lead in the 15th minute with Álvaro taking one of their few chances in the opening period Manzanares took their lead into the break and it was not until the second half that Barça drew level Touré fired home on 29 minutes to make it 1-1 and just three minutes later Antonio scored his first of the game to put the blaugranes in front a spirited Manzanares pulled it back to 2-2 with a goal from Daniel Gabriel to secure what looked like a point from their visit to the Palau With just 10 seconds remaining in the game Antonio's shot found its way into the back of the net to send the Palau wild and record a first win for Tino Pérez as Barça coach Senior associate AD for sports administration Ed Manzanares was once the youngest NCAA Division II basketball coach in the country when he took the reigns at New Mexico Highlands before he turned 30 the desire to look under every rock and stretch all them pennies to the breaking point must not look miserly or get frustrated at your lot in life Logic suggests the University of New Mexico is deep in the throes of a national search for its new athletic director into the latter stages of that hunt after Eddie Nuñez announced Aug 17 he was leaving to take the same position at Houston a woman or man with previous experience as an AD at a mid-major or plenty of time learning the ropes as an understudy at a school from a power conference The safe bet is a candidate who has had very little There’s nothing wrong with using the resources at hand to find the best available candidate for a job that is the living embodiment of struggling up a sand dune with the wind in your face choosing an in-house candidate like interim AD David Williams or senior associate AD for sports administration Ed Manzanares The former is a familiar face around these parts Manzanares was once the youngest NCAA Division II basketball coach in the country when he took the reigns at New Mexico Highlands before he turned 30 the Escalante High grad returned to Highlands a few years later and served as When people talk about the good ol’ days — albeit recent — of NMHU athletics most of the major milestones came when he was in charge from 2006-13 The football team was a conference contender after he beat enough bushes to fully fund the program with 28 athletic scholarship equivalencies the maximum allowed at the time by the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference The coaches he hired during his tenure — Eric Young for football and Joe Harge for men’s hoops among them — had solid success while the veteran coaches already in place at the time like Steve Jones (baseball) and Bob DeVries (track) flourished with unwavering financial support Manzanares did it by networking a limited alumni base and cozying up to as many local businesses and school administrators as humanly possible felt like the back burner of college sports he drummed up millions of dollars for facility upgrades and manufactured a financially viable athletic department that had constant access to scholarships and resources People were drawn to his charismatic approach his perpetually upbeat and optimistic personality He had inroads to the power brokers who had the financial means to make his duct tape-and-elbow-grease department better and he befriended the people who helped him in that quest One can only wonder what it would be like if he took that same approach at UNM a department whose annual athletic budget is roughly 10 times the size of Highlands Running the show at UNM is no small challenge The football program is woefully underfunded and the facility needs a massive facelift but in a state that does have an alumni base big enough to plug some of the holes having a sports boss who knows how to bring their financial gain to the table would be a plus Conventional wisdom says that Lobos fans think the best candidate isn’t the one right under their noses A résumé whose bullet points have non-New Mexico flavor is somehow more attractive than homegrown talent It’s not like anyone from these parts (cough born in Taos who runs one of most high-powered departments in NCAA history) can stay home and actually do anything to help the state’s flagship school that has always looked beyond our borders for its top people Maybe we’ve reached a point where someone like Manzanares gets his shot Will Webber is the sports editor at The New
