There was defeat for Marbella FC (3-2) at Alfredo Di Stéfano stadium in a match marked by numerous attacks on the box from both teams
This setback leaves Marbella with 40 points and they stand just one point before relegation
They were unable to take advantage of the slip-ups of other rivals in the danger zone
Marbella took to the field out of the relegation zone
something that had not happened in recent matches
after the defeats of Yeclano and Sanluqueño
But the players also took to the field against the Real Madrid reserve team with the burden of an early goal that has followed them around for so many games
Not even two minutes had gone by when a cross from the left was cleared to the edge of the box and full back David Jiménez came to make it 1-0 with a great shot
especially looking out for Castilla's Víctor Muñoz
as striker Gonzalo and ex-Malaguista Loren Zúñiga hardly appeared
Control of the game saw them reach Castilla's goal
who has already played for Real Madrid this year on numerous occasions
Dorian had the first with a forced shot in the 17th minute and from then on there was a steady stream of attempts: Edwars with a shot from outside the box
Callejón with a shot in the box and a final shot from Alberto Soto
The second half saw a crazy few minutes: with three goals all within the 56th to 65th minutes
The first made it 2-0 for Real Madrid Castilla when Gonzalo
got past the centre backs and scored masterfully
Marbella reacted with a 2-1 lead in a move started by José Callejón
who laid the ball out to the right for Jorge Álvarez
setting up for the Motril-born striker to score
Their hopes were dashed when the Madrid side caught the visitors' defence off guard
which Loren Zúñiga took advantage of: making it 3-1
A great goal from Alberto Soto in the 92nd minute gave Marbella some hope
but Pablo Muñoz shot over and there went their hopes of scoring in a back and forth game
It was a missed opportunity which could have balanced the fight to stay out of the relegation zone

Spain
and wellness retreats – that’s what you’d expect from Marbella
beachfront resort Amàre has all of that
vibey and mostly unpretentious. The hotel’s main draw
will still look pretty good on your Instagram
with views of the Sierra Blanca mountains and Mediterranean – on a clear day
Centered around stylish dining and drinking, Amàre is a hotel for wine on the roof
tapas by the palm-fringed pool and cocktails in the lounge
with tiki-inspired furnishings, wave designs and more beachy additions
You might want to spend all day (and all night) here
but you’ll likely not forget you’re right on the cusp of a brilliant day out in Marbella’s old town.
Amàre’s location is top-notch for spending hours upon hours wandering Marbella’s old town and its Moorish-era streets – as well as its beach bar-lined coastline. But the hotel itself invites you to stay all day
you’ll see its also decked out in artwork by local and international artists in its lifts
and hydrotherapy circuit to help you rejuvenate after a heavy one
and you can choose from standard bed and breakfast or half-board packages
If you’re looking to add an extra touch of lujo
booking a room with access to ‘The One’ grants you a spa circuit each day and entry to an exclusive lounge stocked with sandwiches
Amàre’s whopping 236 rooms include spacious suites with separate living areas
and cosier more affordable digs where you can see the city right from your window
I stayed in a ‘Make it Happen’ room on the ninth floor
which featured large floor-to-ceiling windows with a side view of the coastline and on the same level as the rooftop bar
Warning: here you can see the bar when you step outside your room
so may find yourself swayed towards a final a night cap every single night
All rooms come with the essentials: a big comfy bed
You’re in luck – there's a menu with options for different firmness levels
We’ll list them here – buckle in: you’ve got Mare Nostrum (breakfast and all-day dining with a beachfront terrace)
Amàre Beach (its main Mediterranean beach-side restaurant)
Michelin-starred restaurant that’s just been renovated)
Hayaca (a Latin American fusion pop-up restaurant), Amàre Lounge (for casual dining)
which does exactly what it says on the tin.
make sure to spend at least an hour at the buffet breakfast (there’s a lot) – think made-to-order omelettes
It‘s served at their Mare Nostrum restaurant (which means ‘Our Sea’)
offering cracking views of endless blue – just be sure to arrive early if you want a spot on the terrace
you can swing by the laid-back beach club for a plate of sea bass
or chow down on a Wagyu burger in the lounge to a tasteful backdrop of tango dancers
the menus are clearly labelled and there’s a good amount of vegan and gluten-free options to choose from
The Belvue Rooftop Bar is probably the hotel’s pièce de résistance, with 360-degree views over the coastline
The menu is curated by mixologist Diego Cabrera – try the burning margarita with white tequila
homemade tamarind syrup and habanero chile
The staff are exceptionally warm and attentive
If you want to indulge in a bit of hedonism
press the buzzer while you’re hanging out by the pool and someone will take your order from your lounger
there’s a QR code for booking spa treatments
Staff are also available via WhatsApp or a phone call
There are a bunch of places to enjoy Marbella’s 320 days of sunshine a year
there’s a small gym downstairs and beach yoga is available three times a week
The Germaine de Capuccini spa offers professional treatments
which was a light-pressure massage featuring the sound of rain
You can reserve the entire spa circuit for a private ‘sparty’ with friends.
In your room you’ll find a desk for a bit of digital nomad-ing
plus there’s computers in The One Lounge if that’s part of your package
There’s also a handy grab-and-go shop at reception with snacks and beach essentials
and another downstairs for jewelry and watches. The 12-person lifts provide step-free access to rooms
and ramps are featured throughout the hotel
you might find yourself waiting a while for the lift
as you’ll be competing with a lot of other guests
Marbella is as good as it gets in Spain’s Andalusia region – you can saunter up and down its promenade
or sit back with a sangria at the Plaza de los Naranjos
In the old town you’ll find Kafien Coffee and Kitchen for a brew
Joan Charity Shop if you want second-hand resort wear
and D.Olivia Marbella Aceites de Oliva to sample and pick up premium olive oil that can fit in your carry-on bag
head to the marina to jump on a short catamaran to Puerto Banús if shopping in designer boutiques and gawking at luxury yachts is your thing.
I’m not usually the type to book luxury resorts (especially solo)
but I haven’t stopped banging on about Amàre to my friends
you might run into a few influencers in the loos
but the vibe here is more relaxed than it is showy
the sunbeds are usually taken up by honeymooners and friends who finally made it out of their girl’s trip group chat
and whether you spend the afternoon at the beach club or Marbella’s sites is totally up to you – just make sure you join some of the glamorous locals for a sundowner
Prices per night: From €195 per room
per night on a bed and breakfast basis and €253 per room

providing easy access to the main bus station

A repeat guest admires the famed Spanish retreat's remarkable staying power
the world changed – at least it did for the sybaritic elite that used to go by the name of Café Society but would soon be re-classified in the social taxonomy as the jet set: 1954 was the year that the Marbella Club opened
The story had begun almost a decade earlier when
Prince Max von Hohenlohe fired up his charcoal-burning Rolls-Royce Phantom and drove south from a 90-room palace just outside Madrid
He was in search of the sun and his cousin Ricardo Soriano
who was busy living what today we would call his best life on what is now the Costa del Sol

there was no mid-century Cervantes on hand to document this epic quest
but creation myths should not be troubled by such trivialities
he ate a picnic under the sun-dappled shade of a pine forest that ran down to the edge of the sea (some of the trees are still there)
he sent his son Prince Alfonso to buy the land where he had eaten his picnic
Prince Alfonso von Hohenlohe welcomed his first guests to the Marbella Club Motel
The "motel" bit was soon dropped as the place filled up with the sort of people Alfonso bumped into at more conventional resorts like St
a sort of aristocratic Fawlty Towers art-directed by Slim Aarons
"People expect us to be Super Luxury; actually
we're not," Prince Alfonso once told Town & Country

I like to tell people that barefoot luxury is nothing new
it just used to be called "the Marbella Club"
expectations of hotels are somewhat higher than they were in the Marbella Club's early days of hip baths and headboards painted on the walls of monastically simple guest rooms
But even though it may move with the times – it now has its own Chanel store and Louis Vuitton boutique
and is shortly to open a Loewe – there is also a sui generis spirit of timelessness that pervades the place
Past and present are allowed to coexist in a way that I have yet to experience elsewhere
I have been hanging around the Marbella Club for about 30 years
and would probably select it as my specialist topic on Mastermind
it is hard to articulate the feeling I experienced during the 70th-anniversary gala weekend this summer
I had been asked to read extracts of my book about the hotel
normally I would refuse: it is the sort of thing you expect at a second-rate literary festival rather than a first-class resort
But when the Marbella Club asks you to read
"How many pages?" What made me feel even more of a fraud than usual was that I was reading in front of a gathering of former members of staff
Among those staff was nonagenarian nobleman Rudolf Graf von Schönburg
who joined the hotel as manager in 1957 and never left
It is as if he is the human incarnation of the low whitewashed bungalows punctuating the lush greenery of the gardens
Count Rudi provides the thread of continuity that life in the mid-2020s so frequently lacks
He can unlock the stories within if not every blade of grass
whether the lime trees planted for the Duke of Windsor to use in his Martinis
or the giant pines that shade the terrace of The Grill restaurant
which were transplanted as saplings from the beach
He has been here to record every new layer of meaning that successive generations of guests
owners and staff have left on the palimpsest of the hotel
high-end transnational hotel chains (an ugly but accurate term) deliver a pasteurised experience that is largely the same wherever you happen to be: standardised advertising
The ceaseless movement of staff around the world compounds this nebulous sensation of perpetual indigence
Adapted with Darwinian perfection to their surroundings
it is as if they cease to be man-made and become a part of the landscape
You might have thought that I would have tired of the place
but instead I am drawn by its siren song and find it still has the power to salve the soul
familiarity does not breed contempt but fosters an affection that deepens with every passing year
I am very well aware of the irony that a hotel

Marbella is preparing for its high season with holidaymakers with one of the most important services on the coast: the lifeguard and rescue service
While during April and the Holy Week professionals were already present
this important service will now be available during the weekends in May
lifeguard cover will be available every day
adding an extra hour of work in July and August
Marbella will have 46 lifeguards who will work from 11am to 7pm in July and August
from 1 April to 30 June and from 1 September to 15 October
The service will also be equipped with three jet skis
The Local Police force will also join the safety and security operations along the coast
prepared to monitor the 27 kilometres of coastline with three daily patrols - one in plain clothes and two uniformed
The Civil Protection service will join in with a dozen volunteers
who will have their central base in La Bajadilla
three 4x4 off-road vehicles and two vans as material means
The service will also be equipped with a boat and two jet skis from the fire brigade
which will have a detachment from the aquatic unit on duty for work on the surface
In addition to the personnel and equipment deployed on the beaches of Marbella and San Pedro Alcántara
every year the Marbella town hall carries out a drill to check the coordination of all those involved in the rescue and lifeguard service and to calculate the response times to any possible dangerous situation that may arise
more than 40 members of the emergency services of the Local Police
Civil Protection and rescue services took part in this annual event on the Levante beach of Puerto Banús
where three different were enacted: a supposed search on land for a missing minor
a fictitious collision between two boats and a hypothetical underwater search in the vicinity of the western breakwater
Councillor Diego López underlined the importance of "testing the capacity and coordination to respond in emergency situations"
Marbella is getting ready its beaches for the peak season with its celebrated Lifeguard and Rescue Service
The service restarted during April and Easter and will now operate at weekends throughout May and on a daily basis from June
with one noteworthy change: an extended hour in July and August
From April to June 30 and September 1 to October 15, 26 lifeguards will cover the 27-km coastline from 12pm to 6pm
46 lifeguards will be on duty from 11am to 7pm daily
Local police will patrol with three daily units, one plainclothes and two uniformed, using four quads and four drones. Civil Protection will deploy ten volunteers in two shifts, based at La Bajadilla alongside the lifeguard service
the Marbella teams have already conducted their annual drill on Puerto Banús’s Levante beach
involving over 40 emergency personnel from local police
The exercise tested coordination through a variety of scenarios like a missing child search

A young man has died this Sunday afternoon after being run over on the A-7 motorway
as it passes through Marbella on the Costa del Sol
according to the 112 Andalucía emergency service coordination centre
At 1.52pm operators responded to a call for help requesting urgent medical assistance for a person lying on the road who had been run over by a vehicle at kilometre 1051
National Police and Guardia Civil traffic division were called to the scene but health professionals could only confirm the death of the victim
Philadelphia Union made it back to Philadelphia

Philadelphia Union capped off a productive trip to Spain on Sunday
taking on Danish Superliga side AGF in their final friendly abroad
it was a strong 90 minutes featuring appearances from 23 different players and the first Union goal of 2025

The match capped off what was a formative two weeks for the team under new leadership -- after the action
Carnell expressed his thoughts on the trip's finale and the progress he's saw during the trip to Spain as a whole
"Growth is all I wanted to see," Carnell said
"I wanted to see a team and a collective effort
positive things happen with this group in such a short span of time
and today we might have gone down in the game on the scoreline
but I felt we came leaps and bounds with the team."
The final day also demonstrated that the jaunt abroad served as a springboard for team connection
the team spent time in each other's company
watched the Philadelphia Eagles win their NFC Championship matchup against the Washington Commanders and advance to Super Bowl LIX
SUPER BOWL BOUND!!! Lets go @Eagles 🦅
Saturday morning brought about the team's final vist to Marbella Football Center as they held their matchday -1 session ahead of Sunday's friendly against AGF
The group spent the lion's share of the session focused on attacking in the final third and set pieces
closing out what was a very productive two-weeks of hard work in Spain
While it was the collective's final visit to MFC
it was newly arrived Jack McGlynn's very first
he integrated right back in with the group smoothly
training in full in anticipation of minutes in Sunday's match
many spent time strolling down the luxury store-laden walk along the marina in nearby Puerto Banus
recovering or taking part in some final interviews with team digital staff in the hotel's cafe
The group is set to land back in the states on Monday night
they have a final 90-minute go against Danish Superliga competition
Friday marked the final double day of the team's two-week trip to Spain
and Carnell kicked off the early session with praise for how his group handled a very taxing Thursday
He and his coaching staff paired another energetic morning with an afternoon of set-piece
gearing up for Sunday's friendly against AGF
While the day didn't stray very far from what's been typical for the team so far Spain
the group welcomed a familiar face back into the fold
21-year-old Homegrown Jack McGlynn made it to Marbella at last after a very successful stint with the United States Men's National team in Florida
Carnell lead the meal room in a round of applause
celebrating McGlynn's first-ever goal for his country's senior team
Jack is back! 📍#DOOP pic.twitter.com/3d1xV9iRoL
Carnell said that Wednesday's training was his team's best so far
but he ventured to rank Thursday's even higher after the group persevered through a physically demanding two and a half hour session split between time on the pitch and in Marbella Football Center's weight room
Fitness has been a top priority for Carnell and his staff so far in Spain
and he pushed the team the hardest he had yet before giving them the afternoon to recover ahead of Friday's final double training day in Spain
behind-the-scenes look at what the trip to Spain has been like for the team so far
watch Part 1 of Philadelphia Union's new video series below
Philadelphia Union was quick to shift their focus back on 2025 preparations after a restful day off
resuming their two-a-day schedule on with a vigorous morning session
as has been custom for mornings so far in the trip
they returned to the field for a lighter lift skill practice
Head Coach Bradley Carnell kept busy until far after the sunset
holding position-specific meetings with his players and staff after dinner in the film room
He didn't start his weekly press conference until 9pm Spain time
he shared with the media that Wednesday's day training was the team's 'best' so far
"We've learned a lot about ourselves," Carnell
the guys were team building [on Monday] so camaraderie seems high
and there's willingness to put the effort in and do the extra bit," Carnell said
It was another day of togetherness for the Boys in Blue as Tuesday marked one week in Marbella
and Carnell gave the team the entire day to themselves
it was one of the best weather days the team's been able to enjoy since arrival
From nine holes on the golf course across the street from the hotel to sunset boat rides and steak dinners on the Mediterranean Sea
the team explored neighborhoods like Old Town and Puerto Banus
soaking in the sights and sun before waking up for another jam-packed two-a-day schedule on Wednesday
Philadelphia Union returned to the pitch at Marbella Football Center for a two-part recovery session
The group kept their renewed competitive spirits alive with soccer tennis
which coincidentally is known to have been invented by none other than Slavia Prague in 1922 as a method of keeping their ball skills sharp
defeating the Sullivan brothers and Franke Westfield
fellow Philadelphia Union Academy products
the performance staff led the group in a run before an afternoon of more head-to-head activities — this time
In his introductory Q&A in early January
Carnell told team media staff that he runs on 'caffeine and octane'
That rang true when he got behind the wheel himself during the team trip to Kart&Fun in Estepona

It was a picture perfect afternoon for soccer in Spain on Sunday. Palm trees, a view of La Concha mountain, and seasonal 55 degree Marbella weather set the stage for Philadelphia Union's first match action of the new year.
The 90 minute head-to-head finished 1-0 in favor of the Czech top flight side -- they hit the back of the net once in the first half
but it was still a productive one for the team's newly hired coaching staff and their players
pushing to earn minutes come Major League Soccer regular season start on February 22nd in Orlando
Head Coach Bradley Carnell used five different lineups throughout the match
reflected on his team's first outing and the trip to Marbella so far
and I think comfort zone is a big word for us
and we're trying to put that in place," Bedoya said
trying to implement some of the things that we've learned over the last couple four days
a lot of young players getting to know each other
is to make sure they integrate into the team well
and also get everybody to be on the same page."

Saturday's training was Philadelphia Union's last before their friendly against Slavia Prague
participating in drills near the start of the session
The team hasn't played a match in three months
there's been many changes throughout the roster and staff
Although the match ahead isn't one of consequence
it'll mark Carnell's first 90 minutes in Philadelphia's coaching seat
and he'll have the opportunity to test multiple different lineups while watching how both returning and new players work together at game speed
During his press conference earlier this week
the team leader shared his thoughts on the opportunity to play against teams like their upcoming opponent during their stay in Marbella
"I think playing European opponents who are a week away from getting going
like Slavia Prague who are playing in their Europa League game on Thursday
there's a lot of benefits to it," Carnell said
team had the afternoon off; some team veterans opted to spend time together in the hotel's cafe
while the younger crew recovered in the spa and sauna

It's been five days since departure and the Philadelphia Union's opening friendly of the trip is rapidly approaching
the team will be back in match action for the first time in 2025
Friday morning's matchday -2 training session was fast-paced and physical
taking place one field to the right of fellow Major League Soccer team Vancouver Whitecaps
It's not the only time the pair will cross paths this year
Philadelphia is scheduled to visit the Western Conference side in Canada late in the regular season on September 14th
The early session ended in enthusiastic celebration when one group
emerged victorious from the final training competition of morning admist an unexpected downpour:

The rain persisted until the team loaded onto the bus drenched
they were back in the same spot in far more favorable weather
Training #2 was less physically demanding but purposeful
featuring position group-specific drills and set piece work
Carnell emphasized the word 'quality' in his message to the team
and that's what unfolded on the pitch in preparation for the upcoming meet-up
As has been in the case since Carnell and his assistant
the team closed with dinner and a full-group film session before calling it a night
The first day and a half in Marbella brought about some unforeseen obstacles for the Philadelphia Union
During the team’s layover in London Heathrow airport
including some that carried essentials like runners
didn’t make it on the connecting flight to Málaga
After dilligent efforts from the team's operations and equipment staff
all missing luggage arrived to the hotel by Wednesday night
the team was already in a routine and ready for a full-throttle session
The team pushed through a high intensity training from start to finish
Carnell announced the afternoon would be off
offering their bodies a chance to recover before post-dinner meetings and another two-a-day schedule on Friday
since [the equipment situation] was cleared up and we got the green light
and things have been looking really good," Carnell said during his Thursday press conference
"Today was a really great training session in the morning
Philadelphia Union’s first full day in Spain was a busy one from start to finish
The team’s Wednesday itinerary opened with their annual six-minute fitness test on the pitch, and like last year, Quinn Sullivan finished at the top of the travel party with fellow Homegrown Nick Pariano close behind
the team hit the gym at Marbella Football Center
capping off the first portion of their productive two-a-day schedule with strength training
Chuchu changed his number to 8 and he wants everyone to smell it 😘 pic.twitter.com/5kCPeKewPh
they reconvened on the pitch for a productive afternoon session
as it marked Bradley Carnell’s first as Philadelphia Union’s Head Coach
the newly-appointed team leader was quick to describe his group as chippy
"I think the intensity is something we discussed a lot in the last couple of days prior to traveling
a sense of purpose already in these short few days
I can't wait to see it happen day by day where we get to build this thing and take it on
Finally together and excited for what's to come!#DOOP pic.twitter.com/HAhLDGJGIR
swapping below-freezing East Coast temps for 55 degree days and sunny Spain skies
The travel party featured 29 players including veterans like returning captain Alejandro Bedoya
new faces like 23-year-old Argentinian center back Ian Glavinovich
and promising youth coming up through the club's renowned 'Pathway to the Pros' like Neil Pierre
The only player currently asbent from the group is midfielder Jack McGlynn, but for good reason. The 21-year-old Homegrown was called up to the United States Men's National Team's January camp in Ft
but he's expected to rejoin Philadelphia near the tail end of their trip
Those in Marbella wasted no time getting to work on Tuesday; less than three hours after checking into the hotel
bussing to the coast for a beach session to shake out their travel legs
The team's first official training under newly-appointed Head Coach Bradley Carnell will take place on the pitch at Marbella Football Center on Wednesday
but with the team gathered in one place at last
he opened the 2025 campaign with a introductory speech to set the tone for the weeks to come
Check out some of the best photos from the team's first day back together in the new year
Spain for a two-week training stint abroad before their official 2025 preseason kicks off in February
The trip signals the commencement of a new era for the club -- this year will be Philadelphia Union’s first with a new Head Coach in over a decade
recharging with family and loved ones after a season that left something to be desired. With a new team leader and a collective desire to level-up last year's performance on the pitch
the team is back together once again for their first official outing of 2025
Philadelphia Union is one of almost 50 clubs that'll send a team to Marbella Football Center throughout January
they'll go head-to-head with two fellow visitors – Czech top division's Slavia Prague and Danish SuperLiga's Aarhus Gymnastikforening
January 14th -- stay tuned for daily updates about the team's trip to Spain on PhiladelphiaUnion.com and the club's official social media channels

Read on for our top four locations for living in luxury in Spain
Spain has the perfect blend of that old-school Spanish luxury and charm with modern high-end barrios (neighbourhoods)
From the exclusivity of the Golden Mile in Marbella to the hills of Altea
And that’s the luxury screaming in your face
What we love about Spain is that it also has a ‘quiet luxury’ vibe
the ‘quiet luxury’ movement (don’t think this only applies to fashion) is that extravagance that doesn’t command attention but subtly wraps you in its blanket of opulence
Combine all that with the fact Spain is known for its divine wine sourced straight from the grapes of the blossoming vineyards and cuisine that leaves you questioning whether you’ve ever tasted great gastronomy before, and you’ll see why living in Spain is a high-end haven
We had to start with Marbella. It’s the playground of the rich and famous. From Simon Cowell to the Beckhams, Marbella is undoubtedly the go-to place for anyone with money. To live in Spain in Marbella is a dream for so many of us
Living in Spain after Brexit is more common in areas like Marbella
It’s impossible to walk by the marina without spotting a footballer or some other sportsperson taking their summer break – last year
it was Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams.Last month
it was Jim Ratcliffe (majority owner of Manchester United) and his €150 million superyacht
But we’re not in Marbella just to idolise the rich and famous (unless they’re doing a bit of morning cardio for us to watch through our sunglasses)
Go to the highly prestigious Golden Mile, a 5km promenade, and your jaw will hit the floor at the real estate
staying for a night at the 5* Marbella Club Hotel will give you a taste of how the other half live
We’d recommend a reservation at La Sala By The Sea
a premium beach club that will set you back €€€ when the bill arrives
Sitting next to the quaint whitewashed walls of the main municipality of Altea
this exclusive area sits nestled into the mountains with breathtaking ocean views
Think of Altea Hills as a complex rather than somewhere you can dine
It’s filled with villas and outright mansions that loom over Altea
Depending on how high up the hills you are
the charming city of Altea is possibly only a short walk or drive away
the more wealth you’re surrounded by
Villa Petra is arguably the most stunning villa in the hills
and you’re greeted with a traditional
serene Spanish seaside area that almost feels like a warm hug
The whitewashed walls are met with the most beautiful
colourful flowers that have made the walls their home (jealous)
Spain’s living costs are considerably less in Altea compared to Altea Hills simply because of the community fees
we’d absolutely recommend Restaurante E-Tike
A true fine dining experience serving exquisite Peruvian/Mediterranean fusion cuisine
The charming cobbled streets and wooden shutter apartments feel like something out of a movie
Valldemossa is the kind of place that makes you whisper “wow” even if you’ve been there before
Tucked away in the Tramuntana mountains of Mallorca
it’s less about flashy yachts and more about rustic charm dipped in elegance
That peaceful silence you’ll experience only breaks with the sound of distant church bells
It’s been pulling in the elite for decades
Chopin spent a winter here and described it as one of the most beautiful places on Earth (and honestly
It’s the perfect combination of romantic
You won’t find modern glass mansions
but you will find 17th-century estates with private orchards and jaw-dropping mountain views
That’s the quiet luxury Valdemossa exudes without even blinking
For fine dining, Es Taller Valldemossa is the ultimate spot
It’s a sleek fine-dining experience set inside what used to be a mechanic’s garage
now offering an artistic tasting menu that hits every single note of Mediterranean perfection
Majadahonda is the epitome of quiet luxury and the saying: ‘Don’t judge a book by its cover’
but you don’t need to look far to find it
perhaps we’re doing the area a disservice by saying that
It’s surrounded by beautiful landscapes and luscious green forests for that serenity most people are searching for
Majadahonda has that traditional Spanish vibe nestled in between high-end villas
and stunning terraced houses with to-die-for interiors
and Aravaca are some of the most affluent areas where you’re likely to see some of the wealthiest people from Madrid spending their time
Richard Branson and Eva Longoria have been spotted in the area
Enjoy exclusive shopping experiences in the Centro Comercial Gran Plaza
the cuisine awaiting you here will leave you longing for more
one of the Michelin-star restaurants in the area
It’s the perfect fusion of contemporary cuisine fused with the world’s finest flavours
The cost of living in Spain is naturally higher here
People love to talk about healthcare in Spain
and the facilities near Majadahonda are some of the best
as is the Schooling in Spain – 58.1% of the population here has degrees
Luxury in Spain doesn’t just come with a price tag
and that subtle kind of splendour that makes you feel like you’ve arrived without needing to shout about it
Can a UK citizen live in Spain in areas like this

Two of the men who opened fire on bouncers at a nightclub in Marbella because one of them had been denied entry to the venue have finally been sentenced for the crime
one of which struck one of the bouncers in the back
The conviction was reached after the defendants agreed to a plea bargain deal
One of the three involved will serve two years in prison and pay the victim 285,000 euros in compensation; another received an 18-month sentence
although this has been suspended under the condition of attending a correctional facility
The events date back to the early hours of 24 November 2012
located in the Parra Villa Palomeras residential area in Marbella
but the security staff prevented one of them from entering
who was the alleged perpetrator of the shots and the main suspect in the attempted murder
already knew the man for previous altercations with customers and for being an aggressive person
the defendant warned the security staff: "I no longer have any respect for you." The three friends then returned to the car in which they had arrived and set off towards Fuengirola
during the journey they changed their minds and
approached two petrol stations and attempted to buy garments with which to hide their faces
Then the defendants returned to the club with the sole purpose of making an example of the door staff
took a firearm out of the glove compartment of the car and fitted it with a silencer
He then got out of the car and began to shout at the bouncers
who ran for safety after realising that the man was carrying a pistol
with which he began to shoot indiscriminately
one of which struck the bouncer in the side as he was trying to take cover behind some cars
The man was hit by a bullet that entered through the right lower back
as well as damage to his kidneys and spleen
which led to him being declared severely disabled
The man was hospitalised for 155 days and was discharged in a wheelchair
The other two accused waited inside the car
with the engine running to facilitate their escape
where the suspects were later located in Plaza Anabel Conde
the main suspect was intercepted by Local Police officers
who let him go as they were not yet aware of what had happened
although a search did find the silencer used by the defendants inside the car
This is considered a prohibited weapon and its use and possession is forbidden to private individuals
The trial for this 2012 shooting took place this month
when two of the three accused for the crime of attempted murder
for which the public prosecutor's office initially requested eight years in prison
Both acknowledged their guilt after reaching a plea agreement with the prosecution
by which the sentences finally requested were considerably reduced
one of them will have to serve two years in prison and compensate the injured party in the amount of 285,000 euros
while the second has been sentenced to 18 months in prison
as he has been granted a suspended sentence
four months of community service and the payment of civil liability
he will also have to serve the sentence imposed in this case
The main defendant still has to answer for these acts
for who nine years in prison is requested for the attempted murder and another two years for illegal possession of weapons

TOP Brit holiday spots are battling an invasion of stinking seaweed that is swamping their beaches and threatening income
Shorelines along the Costa del Sol face an "environmental emergency" as officials race to clear the rotting mess before it puts off tourists
Marbella, often described as the "jewel in the crown" of the Spanish coast, has scooped up around 2,500 tonnes of algae sludge over the busy Easter period
Officials clear the beaches each day with heavy machinery
As the brown mush decays
it "generates bad odours and prevent bathing" - spoiling the beaches for tourists
fuming that the situation is totally unacceptable
Local councillor Diego Lopez said: "This figure that should set off all the alarms. What we are experiencing this year is unprecedented. It's an environmental emergency.
"We cannot allow our beaches to lose their attractiveness because that has a direct impact on our economy."
The worst of the mess washed up on beaches such as San Pedro Alcántara, Nueva Andalucía, Fontanilla, Venus, El Cable and Cabopino.
Lopez insisted: "This situation affects the entire Andalusian coast and requires a coordinated response."
The algae
is hated by holiday resorts because it ruins beaches with smelly piles of muck
ugly piles on the shoreline and stops holidaymakers from enjoying the sand
Tourists have described it as "disgusting and smelly"
often being forced to jump over piles of the stuff to reach the sea
Marbella council says it cannot battle the problem alone
and is calling for reinforcement from the Spanish government
Lopez slammed the "absolute lack of support from the central government [...] in the face of an environmental emergency that overflows municipal resources"
The invasion is so bad that Marbella has introduced a daily cleaning programme
Around 20 tractors armed with large bucket scrapers zigzag the beaches from 3am to 10am
Lopez said: "The work is organised at dawn to minimise the inconvenience to users."
who he said are all "giving 200 percent to face this situation"
the algae is laid out to dry so it is less heavy and easier to transport
The leftover mess is then transferred to the Costa del Sol Environmental Complex in Malaga
which "makes management even more expensive"
Lopez said the huge effort the council expends to keep the beaches clean proves its commitment to "environmental quality and to the tourist image of the municipality"
RUGULOPTERYX Okamurae is a type of brown algae that originates from the Pacific Ocean
it only existed in northwest Pacific waters
but it has now spread to the Mediterranean and Northeast Atlantic
The plant bobs just beneath the surface of the sea
usually between 0.5 and 5 metres underwater
In very clear water where sunlight can penetrate further
it may be found up to 15 metres below the surface
leading to huge buildups of the plant matter
it can cause major problems for biodiversity by forcing out native species and blocking sunlight for other marine plants
