The term emotional eating (EE) describes the tendency to eat as an automatic response to negative emotions and has been linked to anxiety and depression, common symptoms among the university population. The EE tendencies have also been associated with excessive internet use and an increase in alcohol intake among young university students. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between the tendency towards EE and other health-compromising behaviors, such as excessive internet use or high alcohol intake. Additionally, it aims to investigate the association of these risky behaviors with the participants’ performance level in a virtual reality (VR) task that assesses their executive functioning, and to assess impulsivity and levels of anxiety and depression. The results reveal distinct patterns of psychological and neuropsychological alterations associated with alcohol consumption compared to emotional eating (EE) and excessive internet use. These findings underscore significant differences in the contributing factors between addictions and other substance-free addictive behaviors. For a deeper understanding of the various contributing factors to EE in college students, further research is recommended. The age range was between 18 and 26 years. The mean age of participants was 20.62 (SD = 2.4). All the participants were university students from Francisco de Vitoria University in Madrid, Spain. The students were selected through non-probabilistic and accidental sampling. Table 1 shows more details about sample characteristics Inclusion criteria were not having any psychiatric diagnosis not being receiving psychological treatment at the time of the study and not consuming psychoactive substances The study protocol and design were approved by the Ethics Committee of the University Francisco de Vitoria and it fully complied with the Helsinki Declaration Participants provided information about their age and educational level through a questionnaire created ad hoc Emotional eating was measured using the Emotional Eater Questionnaire (EEQ) (49) The EEQ consists of 10 items on a 4-category Likert scale ranging from 0 to 3 The test provides a global score to distinguish between non-emotional eaters (score between 0–5) slightly emotional eaters (score between 6–10) emotional eaters (score between 11–20) and highly emotional eater (score between 21–30) The temporal stability shows a medium to high correlation in the test–retest average (r = 0.702; p < 0.001) and the internal consistency of the subscales ranges from α = 0.61 to α = 0.77 the internal consistency was α = 0.86 Internet addiction was assessed using the Internet Addiction Test (IAT). This instrument was originally created in 1998 (50). For our study we used the Spanish version validated by Puerta-Cortés et al. (51) The IAT consists of 20 items with a Likert-type response format with 5 levels The cutting point for identifying internet overuse is 40 The diagnostic validity showed 81% sensibility and 82.6% of specificity Internal consistence values obtained in the validation study was good (α = 0.82) internal consistence was also good (α =0.88) the internal consistency for the AUDIT was also good (α = 0.83) Depression was measured with the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), revised and updated in 1996 (54) and validated in a Spanish sample (55) The BDI consists of 21 items on a 4-category Likert scale (0–3) The test score allows for classification into minimal depression (0–13) moderate depression (20–28) and severe depression (29–63) The internal consistence of the BDI in previous studies was α = 0.83 the internal consistence was good (α = 0.90) Anxiety was assessed by using the State–Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), adapted to the Spanish population (56) This questionnaire consists of a 40-items scale divided into two parts: the first 20 items measure anxiety as state; and the las 20 items measure anxiety as trait Each of the 20 items in each subsection uses a 4-category Likert scale ranging from 0 to 3 A reliability study showed high internal consistency (α = 0.93) the internal consistency was also good (α = 0.81).” Impulsivity was measured using the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale, a questionnaire that was originally created in 1987 and adapted to the Spanish population in 2001 (57) The scale consists of 30 items with 4 response options Reliability analysis showed good values of internal consistency (α =0 0.81) In our study the internal consistency was adequate (α = 0.70) Processing speed, planification, working memory and flexibility were measured with the Ice Cream Test (ICT), created by Giunti Psycometrics®, within Nesplora® package through virtual reality. This test has shown validity and reliability to measure executive functions (40). The task allows to measure attention, working memory, planification, flexibility and processing speed at the same time (58) The participants were immersed in a VR experience where they had to assume the role of an ice cream vendor following the instructions given at the beginning of the task All task instructions are delivered audibly: “you’ll be working at the ice cream shop for a while and you must serve them according to your boss’s instructions and he’ll provide you with his priorities for serving customers Click on the phone to give him a call.” The boss’s instructions outlined the order of attending to customers based on various criteria and the preparation of ice creams Participants were provided with a recipe book which they could consult whenever they deemed it necessary The test consists of 20 sequences divided into two rounds all participants underwent a series of practice trials to ensure that the instructions were properly understood and that the task was manageable for each subject the initially learned series of ice creams changes and a new set of ice cream variants must be learned to perform correctly in the second half of the test The task requires to attend to customer requests and orders utilize working memory to remember orders and manage inventory and organize tasks efficiently to serve customers participants must adapt to changing customer demands and process orders quickly to serve customers effectively four indices can be obtained for each participant: planning (correct assignments working memory (correct services without consultation) flexibility (interference between instructions switching) and processing speed (duration of task completion) The immersive and interactive nature of this VR experience can enhance the engagement of the assessment and potentially offer a more accurate representation of an individual’s executive functioning abilities in a real-world context The study was conducted in two steps: first, using the Qualtrics platform,1 where participants completed the questionnaires Participation was voluntary and required prior informed consent This study received approval from the University Francisco de Vitoria Ethics Committee and was conducted in accordance with the principles of the Declaration of Helsinki we obtained descriptive statistics for all the measures To analyze the association between psychological and neuropsychological variables and emotional eating we calculated Pearson correlation coefficients we conducted a series of stepwise linear regression models introducing the significantly associated variables along with age and gender as explanatory variables The data obtained in the study was analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences 25.0 (SPSS) for Windows Table 2 displays the descriptive analysis of each measure Scores exhibit moderate variability based on the range values The Pearson correlation coefficients between each of the measures are presented in Table 3 EE and the propensity for internet addiction are related along with increased impulsivity are associated with EE These same variables and additionally the processing speed (measure round 2) were positively associated to the internet overuse score processing speed (measured in round 2) also exhibited a positive association with AUDIT scores working memory and flexibility demonstrated an inverse correlation with this variable alcohol intake is not linked to higher levels of anxiety and depression depression and impulsivity resulted as explanatory variables accounted for 45% of the variance in EE (F = 22.293; p > 0.001) and age did not emerge as significant explanatory variables the assumptions of linear regression were met The Durbin-Watson statistic for residual independence was 2.047 and the collinearity criteria displayed appropriate values: tolerance level > 0.1 (1.00) and FIV < 10 (1.004) Regarding internet overuse scores, Table 5 shows the explanatory model obtained and impulsivity were significant explanatory variables The complete model explained 40.6% of the variance in internet overuse (F = 11.412; p > 0.001) and age did not result as significant explanatory variables of internet overuse Conditions for linear regression were also met and values for no collinearity were appropriate: tolerance level > 0.1 (0.85–0.932) and FIV < 10 (1.00–1.176) Lastly, Table 6 shows results of explanatory model of alcohol consumption We identified working memory and flexibility as significant explanatory variables The complete model explained 24.5% of the variance in alcohol consumption (F = 8.428; p = 0.001) the requirements for linear regressions were satisfactorily met we obtained tolerance levels >0.1 (0.978–1.000) and FIV < 10 (1.000–1.023) Our findings uncover specific patterns of psychological and neuropsychological changes linked to EE and excessive internet use when contrasted with alcohol consumption These differences suggest that in university students there are diverse underlying mechanisms and behavioral pathways shedding light on the unique impacts of each behavior on cognition and mental health we have not been able to consider in this pilot study and it would be important to take these factors impulsivity and lack of inhibitory control into account for preventive treatments for obesity or eating disorders in order to develop successful programs to prevent EE and obesity sadness and depressive tendencies must be taken into consideration both on personal and socio-familial aspects it is important to consider these results for the implementation of prevention and intervention programs Further research is advised to better understand the various causal factors that lead to EE among college students The study of the prevalence and frequency of EE during the formative years at university as well as the exploration of the associated risk factors This knowledge will be necessary to support intervention techniques and programs run by public health and policy experts and college students represent an important demographic for interventions aimed at preventing obesity The use of VR as an assessment tool can evaluate participants’ performance in more ecological scenarios and provide more reliable results But it is necessary to develop a more appropriate VR environment in the future for the assessment of cognitive functions one that incorporates contexts relevant to participants’ concerns This pilot study is the first step toward a more extensive study using this methodology as we have already mentioned at the beginning of this introduction largely due to the time and resources required to conduct the VR Tasks A larger sample would allow us to include sociodemographic variables in the analysis resulting in more broadly generalizable findings all participants were university students from Francisco de Vitoria University in Madrid It would be desirable to compare the results obtained in this study with those obtained from students in other institutions and with non-student youth of the same age range it would have also been desirable to assess it through a VR task rather than solely relying on a self-report questionnaire although the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale shows good values of internal consistency in our study (α =0 0.70) The raw data supporting the conclusions of this article will be made available by the authors The studies involving humans were approved by Universidad Francisco de Vitoria The studies were conducted in accordance with the local legislation and institutional requirements The participants provided their written informed consent to participate in this study Written informed consent was obtained from the individual(s) for the publication of any potentially identifiable images or data included in this article The author(s) declare that financial support was received for the research This research was supported by Universidad Francisco de Vitoria We would like to thank the participants for taking part in the study The authors declare that the research was conducted in the absence of any commercial or financial relationships that could be construed as a potential conflict of interest All claims expressed in this article are solely those of the authors and do not necessarily represent those of their affiliated organizations Any product that may be evaluated in this article or claim that may be made by its manufacturer is not guaranteed or endorsed by the publisher opinions and data contained in all publications are solely those of the individual author(s) and contributor(s) and not of MDPI and/or the editor(s) MDPI and/or the editor(s) disclaim responsibility for any injury to people or property resulting from any ideas instructions or products referred to in the content 1. ^https://www.qualtrics.com Metabolic and hedonic drives in the neural control of appetite: who is the boss PubMed Abstract | Crossref Full Text | Google Scholar Executive functions and the self-regulation of eating behavior: a review or happy: an examination in treatment-seeking adults with overweight/obesity How emotions affect eating: a five-way model PubMed Abstract | Crossref Full Text | Google Scholar Emotional eating and eating disorder psychopathology Crossref Full Text | Google Scholar 6. her Mequon home last year and stole over $50,000 worth of items were charged last week were each charged June 13 in Ozaukee County Circuit Court with one count of armed robbery with use of force the two could both face up to 40 years in prison officers were dispatched to a home in West Mourning Dove Court in the city of Mequon just after 3:20 a.m A woman stated that she pulled into her driveway when she noticed a white sedan parked near the dead-end where her house is located the woman put her vehicle in reverse to leave the area but the sedan quickly pulled to the end of her driveway and three men ran up to her vehicle One man — suspect 1 — ran up to the rear passenger side window of her vehicle pointed a firearm at her and yelled 'Give me everything!' while another — suspect 2 — began opening the front driver’s door of her vehicle just as suspect 1 opened his Suspect 2 pushed what the woman believed to be a pistol against her left side and grabbed at the watch on her wrist who sat next to her and continued to point his gun at her told her to look down and then grabbed her watch after she took it off as well as ripped a necklace from her neck as she unclasped it A third person — suspect 3 — then opened the rear passenger door and entered the vehicle pushing a pistol into the woman’s right side That suspect asked the two others if they had the watch Suspect 3 also asked the woman where the money was One of the suspects stated 'take the purse!' and suspect 1 then asked who was in the house All three suspects then ran back to the sedan and fled the scene A $30,000 white gold Cartier diamond watch a $20,000 white gold baguette diamond necklace and a $1,000 iPhone 13 Pro Max were all stolen from her An officer checked the Mequon Flock cameras and located the woman’s vehicle driving north on Cedarburg Road at 3:09 a.m A vehicle matching the suspect vehicle description drove past the same camera 10 seconds later It was learned that the white sedan had a stolen license plate through the Milwaukee Police Department which provided an incident report regarding the stolen license plate The plate was on a white Honda Accord during a theft incident and one of the vehicle occupants was identified via photo array as Johnson a Mequon sergeant received a call from a Milwaukee PD officer who advised that the suspect vehicle had been located in Milwaukee and that they had recovered the stolen license plate observed in the FLOCK camera footage had been found unoccupied/parked on the street along West Thurston Court Another Mequon officer received an inmate phone call recording from the Milwaukee PD The inmate spoke to another man at around 12:30 p.m The other man told the inmate that he “came up on” the woman and got a watch The inmate asked to see the items and it is believed they then got on a video call A lieutenant from the Milwaukee County Community Reintegration Center believes the inmate was talking to Johnson who had a Cartier watch and heavy gold chain with diamonds visible The inmate made multiple phone and video calls to that same phone number on April 1 The calls revealed that the other party to the call chain and $2,000 cash from a person with the same first name as the woman which the lieutenant believed to be Johnson wearing jewelry that matched the description of what was taken in the robbery A Mequon detective also reviewed the recordings and identified the man as Johnson the woman contacted the detective and told him that she believed she had located her stolen watch on the internet The woman was able to identify the watch located on the person’s wrist the woman believed that he was one of the subjects involved in the robbery due to the blue stick on the watch that also had the same missing diamonds Using several pictures from the social media account the detective requested other police agencies to help identify the man wearing the watch A New Berlin Police Department detective ultimately believed the subject in the photo was someone who was recently charged in Milwaukee County Milwaukee officers provided information regarding a street crew that lives and commits crimes in the city of Milwaukee are all in the same crew and commit armed robberies The stolen vehicle was being used by Johnson when Johnson and other suspects sold a stolen vehicle to a victim in Milwaukee he was informed by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation the vehicle had been reported stolen and he could not register it The victim then went to Milwaukee Police to report the fraud 2023 Mequon went to Red Granite Correctional Institution to interview Marchena Marchena was shown a photograph of himself taken from a rap video that was posted online Marchena stated that it was him in the photograph roles in football At Valencia CF he spent a decade as a player during a highly successful period in the club's history and last season he was part of Rubén Baraja's coaching staff in the final stretch of the campaign Marchena now faces a new challenge with the start-up of his CM Academy -the startup of which was the reason why he did not stay on as Baraja's number two this term “It is a project that I had been thinking about being able to get going for a long time and we have already started it We are very happy because the repercussion has been very positive but I have a lot of responsibility," he told VCF Media this week “Anyone who does not study will not be able to be in our CM Academy They are children who play football and we want to raise their level but we want them to experience it as children playing sport aware that the first and foremost importance is studying The objective is to give them a comprehensive point of view of football Preparing for the CM Academy's opening in September where Valencia CF open their LaLiga season with an away game against Sevilla FC "It's going to be a nice game to open the season and provide a good show," says Marchena who also highlighted the good work that his friend Baraja's team are doing this preseason “I am very happy with the job that Baraja is doing Little by little he is trying to make a team tailored to him He did that last year but with different circumstances but with many young players and great enthusiasm." “I am in contact with the people at the club They conveyed to me the feeling they have about the squad that they are growing in preseason and eager for LaLiga to start “A door has been opened for the young players Last year we had to make very brave and risky decisions; decisions that It went well for us and a very big path has opened up for the kids they see that they can get there too and that gives the team a boost it gives the club a boost and allows the coach to show that he is not obliged to play anyone and that places are earned in training," concluded Marchena Related news Ver todas The pitch has been restored thanks to donations from LALIGA EA SPORTS and contributions Ford, M.D., M.H.A. dean and chief academic officer of the Miller School “It is also a tribute to the strength of our multidisciplinary team’s leadership in all aspects of heart disease assessment The book’s co-editors were Eduardo de Marchena, M.D. associate dean for international medicine and director of the Eberhard Grube International Structural Heart Disease Training Program at the Miller School; and Camilo A. Gomez, M.D. an interventional cardiology specialist with UM/Jackson Memorial Hospital and voluntary assistant professor of medicine at the Miller School “This book is a global opus on structural heart disease,” said Yiannis S. Chatzizisis, M.D., Ph.D. professor and chief of cardiovascular medicine “The editors exerted a great deal of effort and skill in assembling a group of world-class experts in the field and disseminating this masterpiece to the medical community It will be the standard reference in structural heart disease in the years ahead.” de Marchena was one of 27 Miller School faculty members in multiple disciplines who contributed to the 74-chapter along with their colleagues from UM/Jackson Memorial Hospital and Florida Atlantic University “We have assembled many of the leading thought leaders and expert educators in this field in order to offer knowledge clinical wisdom and practical pearls for structural interventionalists and trainees,” said Dr “Using the Socratic tool of questions and answers our textbook aims to cover present day structural heart disease devices their appropriate use and technical approach to help ensure treatment success In includes links to video case presentations to illustrate these procedures.” Since the first TAVR procedure in April 2002 physicians throughout the world have adopted these leading-edge interventions to treat patients with structural heart disease including new devices and procedures,” he added all valvular diseases and most cardiac structural abnormalities are being treated or being studied for treatment and new devices are being introduced at a mind-boggling pace.” Gomez came to the Miller School as an internal medicine resident with the William J He then trained in cardiology and interventional cardiology followed by structural cardiology training though the Eberhard Grube International Structural Heart Disease Training Program “I had the fortune and privilege to have Dr de Marchena as my mentor from very early stages of my career,” said Dr “I learned how to perform these complex procedures that require advanced technology and knowledge de Marchena’s compassion and empathy for his patients.” Inspired by “Interventional Cardiology Secrets,” a book by Dr chief of the cardiovascular service at Jackson Health System de Marchena in 2019 about writing a book on structural heart disease and volunteered to work with him as co-editor “We started from scratch during the pandemic reach out to the national and international co-authors and prepare the finished manuscript for our publisher,” he added de Marchena has received interest in the textbook from many academic institutions structural heart disease specialists and device manufacturers seeking to train their personnel as this field is moving so quickly,” he said “We are already doing addendums and look forward to the next advances in managing structural heart disease.” Sylvester researchers are offering a new phase 1 clinical trial article is more than 4 years old.Update: This story was updated to include a comment from the Senior Policy Advisor for Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA) On a Friday late in November post-election I had the opportunity to interview three staffers from the offices of Representative Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) to learn about some of the economic policies that were formed under these well-known public figures Another staffer for another well-known politician also chimed in after the interview about the group “Black women have developed transformative policy agendas at all levels of government We often serve two critical roles in any enterprise: first to ensure all voices are heard and reflective of American’s diverse experiences to seek out and mentor other women of color,” said Yasmin Rigney-Nelson “Working for and with other women of color has been a transformative experience for me and I am incredibly grateful for all of the Black women who have mentored me “Facebook Libra’s selling point initially was that this was going to be a way to bank the unbanked and better serve the underbanked but that wouldn’t necessarily exist had we provided the services we should had provided,” said Ibrahim “There is a lot of hype around blockchain technology mostly from people who are thinking about its private sector uses When it comes to publicly administered digital payments the more important question is not how to create a distributed ledger managed by multiple actors “Technology that may sound very convenient to the average person may have terrible implications for marginalized or historically discriminated communities.” According to Murphy the concern of her boss and others relates to how “...facial recognition technology is being used in majority black districts to incarcerate and discriminate against communities of color Facial Recognition technology is an example of what happens when you separate questions of efficiency and design from questions of exclusion Chastity Murphy (l) legislative staffer for Representative Rashida L More Marchena (r) legislative staffer for Representative Alexandria Oscar-Cortez (D-NY) on Capitol Hill and Ibrahim forged a close bond on Capitol Hill in their policy work “I think one of the things that makes our jobs easier in working with one another is the synergy that exists between our bosses and where they stand ideologically Recurring payments is something that all three of our bosses have been pushing...” said Pagon Marchena “We find there is strength in numbers and coordination to push these narratives and push the caucus on what a real progressive response looks like in this time.” it was Ibrahim’s idea to seek out and include Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA) in the letter so the effort would be on a bicameral basis With respect to the importance of these recurring payments Ibrahim quoted economist Larry Summers in our interview highlighting his point that “...economic time has stopped but financial time has not been stopped.” Ibrahim continued it seemed to be just one of the most straightforward ways to provide relief and also provide stimulus on top of that.” While Murphy is quick to credit Ibrahim on things like coordinating the letter with Harris’ office Ibrahim is just as quick to highlight that Federal Reserve relief for state and local municipalities was something Murphy had been speaking about since day one “Why is the Fed not buying municipal bonds?” Murphy would say to Ibrahim “They have the authority to buy municipal bonds The city of Detroit should not have declared bankruptcy.” “A public sector worker is more likely to be black who is laid off This is especially devastating to specific communities.” According to Ibrahim services that are communal in nature tend to be neglected and are not a priority and thus the people who need these services don’t get them this type of behavior is an example of the austerity that was imposed after the 2008-2009 Financial Crisis where states and municipalities had to cut back on their workforce and not invest in education Pagon Marchena had more to say on austerity too particularly as it applied to some of the work Ocasio-Cortez did on Puerto Rico “Claudia is an indispensable member of our team She is extremely talented at understanding the complexities and nuances of issues that come before the Committee on Financial Services and fully grasping the legislative actions and tools that are available to elevate what we are hearing at the grassroots level,” said Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) “Her work and approach is deeply rooted in the needs of New York’s 14th Congressional district We are lucky to have her spearheading many of our legislative efforts and wins.” “Austerity has all kinds of implications for public services,” including healthcare which during Covid-19 has been extremely damaging to the community on the island “allows for the creation of state and locally administered public banks by establishing the Public Bank Grant program administered by the Secretary of the Treasury and the Federal Reserve Board which would provide grants for the formation chartering and capitalization of public banks.” Pagon Marchena commented one of her favorite collaborations on the Hill was with Murphy and Representative Tlaib’s office on the Public Banking Act Regarding what it is like to work with Ocasio-Cortez “I am grateful the trust the Congresswoman has put in me and others in the office She was invested in my personal growth and gave me the opportunity being the first woman of color historically in that position I think seeing a woman of color rises to the higher places of our Government knowing that these institutions have been very hostile to people of color I think there is still a very long way to go There is a deep problem of diversity and inclusion in Congress which is why the work of the tri-caucus’ is so important “I am so grateful to do this work with Aya Aya ensures that my work in the economic and financial services space—from the bills I introduce to the questions I ask in committee hearings to the stakeholders my office engages with in community—centers the voices of those who are too often excluded from decision making tables,” stated Congresswoman Pressley (D-MA) “Aya’s deep understanding of these issues and her commitment to advance progressive economic policies that affirm economic justice for our marginalized communities has made her an invaluable member of my team and one of my most trusted advisors.” With respect to the Federal Reserve and recent data showing only one out of over 400 economists at the Federal Reserve in Washington D.C “Your expertise matters as much as your lived experience You can have all of the education and the technical knowledge in the world but if you are removed from the implications of that policymaking then what you end up with are very different results.” Ibrahim further noted that “Unemployment is a very important metric to the Fed and key to its decision-making With respect to her work on the Payments Modernization Act to have that paycheck held for three to five days working folks have to turn to payday lenders that are exploitative.” According to Ibrahim the Fed has one system of governance for people and another for private banks and companies “I think what’s fundamentally frustrating is a bank is a public-private partnership that offers critical public services with a utility that should be equally accessible to all.” As mentioned earlier the void in the payment system that is left is then filled by tech companies like Facebook Ibrahim is incredibly honored and grateful to do this work and a boss like the Congresswoman who is so open and willing to be out there on some of these issues “...to have those uncomfortable conversations and to take a chance on a ‘Never really been on the Hill before’ candidate when she was interviewing they are making sure the people they are hiring reflect those values.” “There has never been a question that any of us could do any of these jobs There isn’t any question in my mind that a woman of color could be a Vice President or an amazing President and obviously it’s just a matter of others coming to that realization.” Ibrahim was proud of some of the work her boss had done with Senator Harris particularly working on bills with Yasmin Rigney-Nelson Senior Policy Advisor to the now President-Elect Rigney-Nelson - a woman of color herself - served as a mentor to all three of the House women of color staffers Office of Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) “I really enjoy working with Chastity on financial services and economic policy She thinks about legislation that shifts the conversation on what progressive economic policy can look like She consistently demonstrates foresight on identifying links between the financial system and poverty and works to create sustainable tangible policy solutions towards poverty reduction and other districts like mine across the nation,” stated Representative Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) “She’s always thinking boldly and unapologetically about policy solutions in financial services while ensuring that under-serviced communities are at the forefront of her decision-making Her brilliance combined with her desire to free communities of color from economic oppression and inequity is what I value the most.” Murphy’s role with the ABC Act and the way she hoped to frame the conversation around digital dollars is a prime example of a progressive policy that includes the notions of Modern Monetary Theory (MMT) as well as a stark division between monetary policy at the Fed and fiscal policy at the Treasury “Rashida pushes me to do big progressive policy that makes sense have I ever felt like I wasn’t able to push forward good policy It’s one thing for us to give the information but it’s another to be bold and stand as the face to good policy Rashida has never relented.” Murphy further noted that “...knowing that she (Tlaib) trusts me enough to help her in writing her economic policy even when it’s something that others just aren’t yet talking about the closest thing you get to see to yourself are people in the Administration who are heads of departments To see that someone at the highest level of power with that amount of leverage speaks to be why we need to be more intentional about supporting women of color.” Rubén Baraja y Carlos Marchena are legends of Valencia CF and at condition causing chest pain But many high-risk patients whose diseased aortic valves were unable to pump an adequate flow of blood could not undergo surgery and faced a bleak outlook it’s possible to replace an aortic valve through an interventional cardiovascular procedure pioneered in the United States at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in partnership with its affiliated cardiac institute Clinica Angiografia de Occidente in Colombia Since the first South Florida patient was treated on April 17 the Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) procedure has opened the door for patients from their 60s to their 90s to get new heart valves and enjoy a much higher quality of life “We have shown that TAVR is highly effective in patients who are at an increased risk for aortic stenosis or cannot be treated surgically,” said Eduardo J the benefits of the TAVR procedures include faster recoveries shorter hospitalization times and a reduced need for transfusions.” TAVR surgery involves the placement of a medical device into the damaged heart valve using a catheter inserted into an artery in the groin or leg The interventional cardiologist then implants the device which takes over the task of pumping blood through the valve About 85,000 aortic valve replacement procedures are performed in the U.S De Marchena noted that the number of TAVR procedures recently surpassed open-heart procedures for isolated surgical aortic valve replacements the Miller School team has treated more than 700 patients at UHealth Tower many studies involving UHealth researchers have demonstrated the safety and effectiveness of the TAVR procedure professor of medicine and director of the cardiac catheterization laboratory said that the TAVR procedure has brought new hope to many patients and their families “When we are able to fix the valve problem A 90-year-old patient has been able to attend family weddings and see her new grandchildren since being treated six years ago Another elderly patient calls me every December and thanks me for extending his life one more year.” interventional cardiologists in Europe received approval to begin clinical trials of a new procedure for implanting artificial aortic valves in high-risk patients Recognizing the potential benefits for patients a Miller School team led by William O’Neill became co-principal investigators for a clinical trial of the Edwards Sapien heart valve in Miami “We felt this would be a major development in cardiovascular surgery,” said Salerno who is now chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery and vice chair for faculty development and mentoring He noted that nearly half of the 200,000 Americans who need a new heart valve were not able to undergo surgery the Miller School was approved as one of the first 25 U.S the team implanted the new valve in Harold Schoendorf at University of Miami Hospital (now UHealth Tower) – the first such procedures in Florida After the procedure Schoendorf and Horstmyer both said they felt fine Miller School faculty and collaborators have published more than 71 articles in major medical journals and made more than 80 abstract presentations and 40-plus clinical presentations at major national and international medical conferences on TAVR-related topics who is program director of the International Structural Heart Interventional Training Program and director of the Miami Valves conference The launch of the Miller School’s International Medicine Institute (IMI) in 2007 laid the groundwork for collaboration and affiliation with a clinical research team at Angiografía de Occidente S.A. on the initial TAVR trials for CoreValve (a start-up later bought by Medtronic) “We wanted to find a site for cutting-edge cardiovascular procedures and research in South America,” said de Marchena a graduate of the Miller School’s William J Harrington Programs for Latin America and the Caribbean Dager’s team performed the first TAVR procedures with us in Colombia during the same time period as our procedures in Miami This close working relationship led to a research and education affiliation with the University of Miami International Medicine Institute and prolific research productivity.” Dager had stayed in close touch with the Miller School after completing his Harrington fellowship in cardiology in 1988 “When CoreValve wanted to introduce its technology to South America the UM cardiologists recommended our institute,” Dager said we successfully completed our first TAVR case working with and in front of a large audience of UM physicians and Colombian interventionalists did very well and lived nine more years with her new valve.” After Medtronic purchased the CoreValve and began doing clinical trials in the U.S. the University of Miami was selected as a study site partially because of its participation in Colombia De Marchena and Salerno were local co-principal investigators in U.S With the rapid success of the Miller School’s TAVR program de Marchena and other faculty members began training other specialists in the new interventional techniques This led to the establishment of a unique fellowship the International Structural Heart Interventional Training Program “We recently celebrated the tenth anniversary percutaneous valve implant in Colombia at a meeting with the inventors and clinical scientists that worked on the early TAVR valves,” de Marchena said “Our first three structural interventional fellows presented highlights of their experiences in this area of structural heart disease.” assistant professor of medicine and cardiology fellowship program director observed the first TAVR procedures in 2008 as he was finishing his training “We have been on the leading edge of cardiovascular education “We are one of about 45 structural heart fellowship programs and the only international structural program in the U.S There is a great deal of interest in this field which offers a beacon of light for cardiovascular specialists was given a new aortic valve six years ago at age 94 and we are hoping to celebrate her 100th birthday this September,” he said “This is truly a wonderful procedure for our patients.” there have been steady improvements in artificial valves and advances in cardiac catheterization procedures to simplify the process and minimize potential side effects “There has been an explosion in these percutaneous procedures,” said Salerno “We are able to close holes in the heart and address problems with the mitral and tricuspid valves using cardiovascular techniques that were pioneered on transcatheter procedures.” Cohen says the success of the TAVR program has invigorated the field of interventional cardiology “It has opened up new horizons in structural procedures and several companies are racing to develop innovative solutions for other heart valve conditions,” he said the Miller School’s TAVR program continues to grow This interventional procedure is now available for intermediate-risk as well as high-risk patients and de Marchena recently completed enrollment for a new clinical trial for low-risk patients “TAVR has become a relatively simple procedure with a well-trained and experienced team at an approved medical center like UHealth Tower.” Tags: Eduardo de Marchena, TAVR, transcatheter aortic valve replacement During a recent visit to the Galapagos, a Times reporting team — the only visitors touring the park by boat — witnessed penguins swimming alongside tropical fish and sea turtles, krill blooms clouding the shallow waters with pink flotsam, and migrating tuna and hammerhead sharks meandering through the darker, deeper waters. Normally, pods of dolphins and whales stay out of the busy harbor in Academy Bay. But with the tourist boats out of commission, they are swimming around the area for the first time in decades. Brown pelicans are nesting in the nearby cliffs and mangroves — a sight Fiddi Angermeyer, 68, a local tour operator and business owner, says he hasn’t seen since he was a kid. Mosquera Island is not much more than a skinny spit of sand and rock off Baltra Island, where the Galapagos Islands’ main airport is located. On a recent afternoon, baby sea lions, Galapagos pigeons and Sally Lightfoot crabs scrambled across the rocks or lolled in the sunbaked sand on Mosquera’s southern shore. The airport and the channel separating the islands were largely silent — just the sound of waves lapping and sea lion moms and pups barking back and forth. But a walk around the rocky edge of the island showed something deeply distressing to Fernando Ortiz, a park guide and former director of the region’s chapter of Conservation International: Scores of plastic bottles, shoes and equipment packaging — labeled with Chinese characters — poked out of the jagged rocks. In July, the Ecuadorian navy had become alarmed as the fleet approached the edge of the 200-mile zone around the park where commercial fishing is illegal. Climate & Environment A Chinese fishing fleet of roughly 300 vessels has been scooping up sea life near the Galapagos Islands and is now moving south into Peruvian waters hoping to capitalize on the fruits of conservation — increasingly healthy and robust fish stocks — said Boris Worm a researcher at Dalhousie University in Canada who has studied the fishery Coast Guard cutter was called in to help Ecuador’s navy patrol the area commanding officer of the Coast Guard cutter Bertholf where the fishing vessels could dump their harvest and go out and collect more noting the fleet had all the pieces it needed to stay out for months without returning to home ports Several of the Chinese vessels weren’t reporting their location electronically and one was reporting its location as Alaska and nothing blatantly illegal to report to the Ecuadorian navy A Chinese fishing boat off the coast of Peru lights up the surrounding water to attract squid in 2018 (Simon Ager Photography) For its part China has contended it has “zero tolerance” toward illegal fishing the Chinese Embassy in Quito said China respects Ecuador’s measures to protect the environment and preserve marine resources chief executive of a Virginia-based military defense and commercial data analytics start-up called HawkEye 360 said his company’s research — which relies on radio frequency and satellite imagery to process movement — showed many suspicious signals coming from within the zone this summer In 2017, a Chinese fishing vessel intercepted off of the Galapagos was found to be hauling 300 tons of fish, which included tens of thousands of illegally caught sharks. Mayor Vinueza said the continuing presence of the fleet is an assault on the preserve and his residents’ livelihood, especially in the face of the economic devastation the park is suffering. In August, hundreds of Santa Cruz canton residents took to the streets to protest the fishing fleet — worried it was depleting the park’s natural resources, potentially giving one more reason for tourists not to return. On Sept. 24, a commercial flight from Guayaquil to Baltra Island had only nine passengers aboard. Though Avianca Airlines once had daily flights to the island, those have dropped to a sporadic two or three a week. The lack of tourists has clearly hit the businesses that rely on them, as well as the fishermen and farmers who supply the industry. Denato Rendon, a local fisherman, has been giving his fish away while his cooperative tries to find new buyers on the mainland and overseas. William and Noralma Cabrera, farmers in the hills outside Puerto Ayora, are also giving food away, and sometimes bartering — trading their tomatoes and cucumbers for goods such as fish, chicken or milk. The coronavirus has hit Ecuador’s idyllic Galapagos Islands, which once helped Charles Darwin refine his theory of evolution and natural selection. “We’re a close-knit community,” the father of two said as he stood in front of greenhouses where beans, lettuce and tomatoes were ripening. The dearth of tourists has also hit the park, which relies on $100 entry fees from visitors. The fees provide money for preservation, conservation, upkeep and enforcement. More than 97% of the Galapagos is protected parkland; the rest is residential. On Sept. 24, the park pulled in $1,240 from tourist fees at the islands’ two airports — just 4% of last year’s collection for the same day, said Norman Wray, president of the Government Council of Galapagos. Noralma Cabrera and her husband, William, are farmers in the hills outside Puerto Ayora. Without tourism driving the economy, they’ve started giving food away. (Carolyn Cole / Los Angeles Times) “We can’t keep things going like this,” Wray said of the high unemployment and tourism exodus from the islands. To try to counteract that, Wray and others are underscoring the safety of the islands and the seriousness with which the industry takes the pandemic. “Look around you,” Vinueza said, “it is safe here. We have strict protocols. We won’t let the virus in.” Proof of a negative PCR coronavirus test, taken within 96 hours of arrival in the Galapagos, is required for entry. That’s more stringent than the requirement to get into Ecuador, which requires a PCR coronavirus test to be taken within 10 days of arrival. Seemingly everyone in the now-quiet Puerto Ayora wears a mask, and all businesses require patrons to douse their hands and shoe soles in alcohol before entry. Boat crews are even spraying the hands of scuba divers just emerging from the ocean before they let them back on their boats. “We just can’t be too careful,” said Ortiz, who works on Angermeyer’s ship, the Passion, as a guide. “And it’s important that people know how seriously we take this disease.” As a result of the pandemic, tourism has plummeted in the Galapagos and tour boats have been moored in Academy Bay for months, while shops and restaurants are shuttered. (Carolyn Cole / Los Angeles Times) Still, there’s the sense here that the pandemic may have changed the tourist economy in the islands forever — and in some respects, Wray said, that may be for the better. He noted that broadband cables are being laid along the ocean floor, which soon will connect the islands with high-speed internet — making it possible for a high-tech academic center or industry, such as Google or Amazon, to relocate or establish satellite offices in the islands. “What a laboratory to work in,” he said, describing the wildness, beauty and history of the islands. And such a prospect, he said, could help park managers imagine a future that didn’t require international tourists to board jumbo jets or gas-guzzling pleasure cruisers to meander around the islands. For the park to survive and its wildlife to thrive, the future of tourism on the island and in the region must change, Wray said. Though the pandemic and Chinese fishing fleet pose threats, he said, they also have offered a moment for the park’s leaders to consider more sustainable models for the Galapagos and the flora and fauna that tourists come to see. “We can’t survive without them,” he said. “But we need to find a balance.” Susanne Rust is an award-winning investigative reporter specializing in environmental issues. Enrique faced some uncomfortable questions as Spain stumbled out of the blocks at Euro 2020 but the former Barcelona boss is a confident character and proven winner in playing and coaching capacities Marchena considers him to be the right man to deliver success in the present saying of the demanding 51-year-old: "I think Luis Enrique is a person who does not hide anything he was already that as a footballer and in his previous stages as a coach He is a born leader and everyone knows him He is very transparent in everything he does and thinks." Marchena knows how dangerous the Swiss can be when filling a role as underdogs with Spain opening their triumphant World Cup campaign in 2010 with a shock defeat to their upcoming opponents Vladimir Petkovic's side have already claimed the notable scalp of France in the last 16, following a thrilling 3-3 draw and penalty shootout success, but they will be without suspended captain Granit Xhaka on Russian soil. On the challenges Switzerland pose, ex-Valencia defender Marchena added: "It is a team that has very clear ideas, but have a very important absence with Xhaka.  "Against France he gave a recital of suffering, overcoming and playing by taking the ball from France and knowing when he had to attack and when he had to keep possession.  "It is a very complete team and it is where it is on its own merits and we have to respect it. We have to face the game with great enthusiasm and great respect." “I didn't think Hoff would come so far in such a short time.” Manuel Marchena defends his independence as a judge Marchena explained that he "never conceived of the judiciary as a tool servicing certain political positions in a criminal case," and he stressed his "independence" as a judge Marchena will thus keep his post as the head of the Supreme Court's Second Chamber meaning he will preside over the trial against Catalan leaders accused of rebellion for organizing a referendum on independence In a message leaked to the press on Monday suggested that Marchena's appointment would benefit the conservatives and added that they would "control from behind the scenes" the court chamber trying pro-independence leaders Cosidó’s message was seen as an effort to dampen criticism within his party's ranks after Marchena was chosen as the would-be president of the judiciary thus delegating the task of conducting the trial of pro-independence leaders to a progressive judge Jailed leaders call for Marchena's recusal One response to Marchena's announcement came from jailed former ministers as well as activists Jordi Cuixart and Jordi Sànchez who on Tuesday morning applied in writing to the Supreme court to recuse the judge Questioning Marchena's impartiality in overseeing the trial of pro-independence leaders the application to have the judge removed also cites the "political agreement" between the Socialists and PP a senior PP official told Spanish radio that the party already considers the pact with the Socialists to be "broken." Party vice secretary Javier Maroto also blamed Pedro Sánchez's government for "leaking" the messages This came as Sánchez urged PP "not to break" the appointment deal "because the most important thing is institutional renewal and normality." The Spanish president also said he "regretted" Marchena's decision to back out said in a radio interview that PP is an "obstacle" to democracy and he doubted whether the Socialist government could reach agreements with the conservatives not that Marchena had decided to withdraw but that Cosidó should still be in his post as a PP party spokesman following the leaking of his messages said there is no need for Cosidó to step down as the leaked messages were part of a "private conversation," while he described Marchena's decision as a "gesture of dignity." Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez She celebrated her last day at her coffee shop job that same week who has called on fellow lawmakers to pay their staffs a “living wage,” is making an example out of her own office The New York Democrat has introduced an unusual policy that no one on her staff will make less than $52,000 a year — an almost unheard of amount for many of the 20-somethings whose long hours make House and Senate offices run For Pagon Marchena, 22, the pay bump meant an end to a grueling, seven-day-a-week work schedule that was wearing down her resolve to stay in Washington, where rents average more than $2,000 a month “I needed an office that was going to pay me a fair wage.” is the latest sign that Ocasio-Cortez and other progressive Democrats intend to buck a long-established trend of ostentatious austerity in congressional offices Government watchdog groups say deep cuts to office and committee budgets have contributed to a lack of diversity in Hill offices high turnover and congressional brain drain Pressley join protest for immigrants in limbo House lawmakers agreed to minor increases for fiscal years 2017 and 2019 in the amount of money appropriated to members’ offices for staffer pay and other expenses, called Members’ Representational Allowances The total budget of $574 million in fiscal 2019 is still below a high of $660 million in fiscal 2010 according to the Congressional Research Service Massachusetts Rep. Katherine M. Clark the vice chairwoman of the House Democratic Caucus and a member of the Legislative Branch Appropriations Subcommittee said she intends to ensure that momentum continues “We want to make sure that we are not only offering a living wage to our staff but that we are hiring at the appropriate levels for the workload that we have and that we are staffing our committees in a way that makes sense,” she said She added that such measures tie into the party’s overall agenda: “As we are trying to provide workers greater fairness in the job market and at home according to a Legistorm analysis last year they should make enough to live,” said Corbin Trent One prominent study found that only one in four House members from the previous Congress had a senior staffer of color from Miami on a rare paid internship with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute a senior legislative correspondent in the office left her first congressional job in another office every Monday through Thursday to work at a restaurant from 6 p.m “And it’s infuriating to know that congressional offices don’t value that kind of work and compensate fairly.” But because all congressional offices get the same budgets to use for staff pay and other expenses  there is only so much that individual lawmakers can do Ocasio-Cortez’s solution requires sacrifices for staffers at the top of the pay scale potentially opening her to criticism from the right that her office policies like her political identity as a Democratic socialist It could also pose challenges to attracting and retaining older employees who have obligations such as mortgages and child care — which in D.C. can cost $23,000 a year for a single child Salaries in Ocasio-Cortez’s office top out at $80,000, Trent said.
