so in order for me to be a good agent I just have to sell myself as a decent rider What’s the best thing about not being an apprentice anymore?SH: It’s like you get the monkey off your back – especially when you get down to one or two more wins you’re just waiting for it to happen and wondering what it’s going to be like A lot of people struggle when they lose the "bug" (apprentice weight allowance) but I was able to keep getting good opportunities and do well so that solidified my confidence. What makes this profession joyful for you?SM: Being around the horses I started riding Quarter Horses for my father in Venezuela when I was 11 and I don’t feel 100 percent myself if I’m not around horses even when I have problems.SH: Seeing horses improve seeing myself improve and making the trainers happy knowing I gave the horse the best shot I possibly could and did the best job I possibly could … and seeing them go through the whole process and get better What goals are you guys taking with you this summer?SM: Since I started at Monmouth Park in 2022 my dream has been to be leading rider there Staying healthy is the most important thing.SH: Just to keep the ball rolling I did better this meet than I did last summer at Belterra so I want to keep heading in that direction industry leaders and American Business Immigration Coalition (ABIC) call for commonsense immigration solutions to sustain the workforce behind Kentucky Derby and beyond Dear Reader,Unfortunately our comment platform isn\'t available at the moment due to issues with our paywall and authentication vendor A crash that killed four teens in west Marin — after their SUV veered off the road to avoid an oncoming car according to a survivor — has left families grieving on both sides of the county line Lea el artículo en español aquí. Ada Kepley’s life was rooted in Marin, but her family’s ties to Sonoma County run generations deep — through classrooms, firehouses and a community that still calls Santa Rosa home. When word spread that the 15-year-old was among four teens killed in a devastating Marin County crash Friday night the heartbreak reached across county lines That heartbreak deepened even more on Monday after the parents of one of the two survivors of the crash said the driver of the SUV went off the road in an attempt to avoid an oncoming car that had swerved into their lane the California Highway Patrol was still investigating the cause of the crash a 10th grader at Archie Williams High School in San Anselmo briefly attended Apple Blossom Elementary in Sebastopol before her family moved to Fairfax in 2015 are retired educators from Sebastopol who now live in Santa Rosa Her mother and three aunts grew up in Sebastopol — attending Pine Crest Elementary School Brook Haven School and Analy High School — and a cousin works as a Santa Rosa police officer previously worked as a firefighter in Sonoma County teaches at Santa Rosa Junior College and co-owns Empire Volleyball Club in Rohnert Park Kepley was one of four students who died after the SUV they were riding in struck a tree along San Geronimo Valley Road rural route that winds through the wooded hills of west Marin County The road connects the small towns of Woodacre The crash occurred around 7:30 p.m. Friday just south of Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, according to the CHP Three of the teens died at the scene; a fourth died at the hospital California Highway Patrol Officer Alex Ochoa said the agency has released “all available information” and likely won’t share anything further “We are aware of what is being circulated in the media and my best response to that would be that we are investigating any and all circumstances that led to this horribly tragic crash,” Ochoa said Tuesday in a statement to The Press Democrat All six teens were between 14 and 16 years old Under California law, a driver must be at least 16 to obtain a license and must wait one year before transporting passengers under 20 unless accompanied by a parent certified driving instructor or another California driver who is 25 or older Taupier confirmed the students’ identities in a message to families Sunday night “Words cannot fully express the sorrow we feel,” she wrote and the entire Archie Williams community in your hearts as we move through this tragedy with love and compassion.” They said their daughter left their home around 6:50 p.m Friday and walked to downtown Fairfax to meet the driver causing the driver to swerve and ultimately run off the road Her family said everyone in the SUV was wearing seat belts and they’re not aware of any evidence that alcohol was involved CHP had not responded to questions about whether investigators believe another car was involved alcohol or speeding may have played a role The agency also has not confirmed whether all occupants were wearing seat belts Her family added that a female bystander pulled Barclay from the wreckage and Marley wants to say thank you to her personally,” they said in a statement In a separate statement to The Press Democrat Kepley’s family described her as “a kind soul and gifted artist with an irreverent sense of humor that made people feel joyful and included.” She loved spending time with her big brother “Ada's absence leaves an unfathomable hole in our lives,” her family said “We are grateful for our friends and community and are also grieving the loss of so many beautiful souls whose lives were cut short.” police officers and medical teams who tried to save the teens A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help Kepley’s family with funeral expenses Asked how the Sonoma County community can help Upton offered a simple request: “Just hug their kids tight.” Other fundraisers for victims and survivors have also drawn wide support smart and sassy — a devoted friend and pet owner with “a wonderful appetite for food and for life.” described her as “full of light.” A page for Katz called her vibrant and caring — someone who loved to sing and loving presence in our lives,” that page said Barclay’s family is also accepting donations to help with medical costs they said she has a “long and painful road to recovery ahead of her.” “Marley is devastated,” a GoFundMe organizer wrote and the wider community will be reeling from this tragedy for quite some time.” Taupier said counseling and grief services will be available at the school in the coming weeks and urged students and staff to seek support the Marin County Sheriff’s Office had not formally released the victims’ names You can reach Staff Writer Madison Smalstig at madison.smalstig@pressdemocrat.com Please select what you would like included for printing: Copy the text below and then paste that into your favorite email application It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Marcy Marin She was born in Winona County on January 7th From this love came 3 outstanding sons and one strong daughter Together they spent their life not just building their farm but a legacy of hard work Marcy lived a life knowing struggle when the weight of the world was too heavy to carry Instead she worked tirelessly to turn pain into purpose and was always there when needed She worked as a dietary aide at Good Shepherd Lutheran Services for numerous years Her greatest achievement was working on the farm alongside her husband and children and daughters-in-law Patty Marin (Jerry) and Kelly Marin (Doug) her sisters-in-law Jean Volkman and Doris Overing along with many remarkable nieces and nephews who will always remember her as the woman who made them feel like they could do anything She is also survived by 14 great grandchildren who happily greeted her at Heaven’s gates living on in the hearts of all who were lucky enough to know her A visitation for Marcy will be held Friday 2025 at 11am with a visitation one hour prior to service Enter your phone number above to have directions sent via text This site is protected by reCAPTCHA and the Google Privacy Policy and Terms of Service apply Service map data © OpenStreetMap contributors Celebrate the season at Slide Ranch's annual Spring Fling fundraiser in Muir Beach Here are our picks for great events and activities for children and families this weekend. It is with heavy hearts we announce that on Wednesday Grace passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving husband Phil and daughters New Mexico to Antonio Rael and Secundina “Nina” Rael She had cherished memories of living in a traditional adobe home near family members She fondly recounted her father’s adventures as the town sheriff his white horse and her puppy named Browntail.  She often reminisced about attending Catholic school and watching the Rose Parade from her brother Tony’s business she met her husband Phil (Feliciano) Marin at his Supper Club She was a devoted wife and mother of three daughters She worked hard to send her daughters to Catholic school and was a wonderful homemaker She enjoyed sewing and was an amazing cook and no one left without her serving them a delicious homemade meal Grace also had a love for music and dancing Her favorite sign in her kitchen reads “This Kitchen is for Dancing” and she was always a willing dance partner.  she found fulfillment translating for Spanish speaking people at a dental office where she worked for many years and later became a medical interpreter for multiple hospitals throughout Denver Grace’s grandchildren were the joy of her life She celebrated their accomplishments and talents She loved each one of them individually and shared close relationships with them all She will be deeply missed until we are reunited with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday January 27th at 10 AM at Pax Christi Catholic Church followed by a reception and Graveside service at 2 PM at Fort Logan National Cemetery Alsop kept her Kennedy Center performances with the National Symphony Orchestra recently because art is bigger than this moment and should be celebrated It's about the human condition," Alsop says The work Alsop brought to the Kennedy Center seemed especially poignant. Composer Julia Wolfe's Her Story is a large-scale work that incorporates real-life letters and speeches from the fight for women's equality A letter from future first lady Abigail Adams to her husband, John Adams, in 1776 includes the line, "Remember all Men would be tyrants if they could." This message is interpolated into Wolfe's work shouted from the stage by the 10 women of the Lorelei Ensemble NPR's Scott Simon joined Alsop at the Kennedy Center during rehearsals to talk about changes at the revered institution and the power of Wolfe's music This interview has been edited for length and clarity To hear the broadcast version of this conversation click the audio player at the top of this page Scott Simon: You're presenting this work, Julia Wolfe's Her Story, at a time when President Trump has taken over the Kennedy Center and a lot of artists have refused to appear here. Renée Fleming resigned as artistic director Shonda Rhimes has left the Kennedy Center board Why are you going ahead with this performance Marin Alsop: I think it's really important that we remember and celebrate the importance of art in our lives Simon: President Trump said no more drag shows or other anti-American propaganda at the Kennedy Center Alsop: I'm not really privy to sort of everything that's gone on behind the scenes but I know that this is a wonderful orchestra This is a wonderful performing arts center And there shouldn't be any kind of barriers for people But I know that so many board members — previous board members — were incredibly generous And I hope that the president will be equally supportive Simon: Julia Wolfe's work ranges from a letter written by Abigail Adams to a speech by Sojourner Truth Alsop: These are the actual words that these women spoke or wrote And you realize that when Abigail Adams is speaking this in 1776 and she's talking about how men really shouldn't have all the power because they will be tyrants I'm reminded of the time we're living in." And Sojourner Truth was such an icon and "The first woman appointed to lead a major American orchestra." So how much has changed in your industry but I have deep concerns that now that the world seems to be trying to backtrack What are the challenges and special joys of doing that Alsop: This is a piece that features an ensemble of 10 women vocalists there's also a choreography and a direction to the piece So women are always called the "un" word — you know the singers are holding up the signs so that the audience can also see it Simon: Why does the concert reach its climax with Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade Alsop: I was struggling with how I should pair this piece And then I thought about the story of Scheherazade This is the story of a woman who was able to weave stories so that the sultan didn't kill her So it's all about the strength of a single woman and the difference that a single woman can make And I thought that would be a perfect pairing Simon: What would you like to leave in people's minds Alsop: It's really the same thing I hope for at every concert whether they've been moved emotionally or whether they're thinking about women in history and the struggle to find equality Become an NPR sponsor Four teenage girls were killed in Marin County on Friday night after
