His career, spanning over six decades, includes more than 60 albums, films, and international tours. Nicknamed "El Divo de Linares," he has received multiple awards and recognitions, including a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame which was approved for release by the Martos family the artist "presents primary brain lymphoma with two brain nodules in the left hemisphere that explain the neurological symptoms he experienced a few days ago." The statement, released by the EFE news agency, added that "specific treatment for this condition has been initiated during his hospital stay and will continue on an outpatient basis he is expected to be discharged in the coming days." After canceling last week's concerts at the WinZik Center in Madrid it was announced that the rest of the 'Victoria' tour dates as well as performances in the Dominican Republic Raphael is confident that he will be able to resume his schedule and reconnect with his audience soon," reads a statement regarding the developments According to the U.S. National Cancer Institute "Primary central nervous system (CNS) lymphoma is a disease in which malignant cells (cancer) form in the lymphatic tissue of the brain or spinal cord." In Raphael's case which includes all the organs within the skull—commonly referred to as the brain but technically consisting of three components Treatment for primary brain lymphoma may include: Raphael is currently hospitalized at the 12 de Octubre University Hospital in Madrid one of the most advanced medical research centers in Europe He was admitted there one day after December 17 when he experienced speech problems during the recording of TVE's Christmas program 'La Revuelta.' stated before Christmas that they expected Raphael to be discharged on Friday got the best of the Olean Oilers in the final regular season matchup between the sides “I always wanted to get my hands on a backyard rec room or ADU project,” Marina says When it came to the stylish addition the family ultimately made to their two-car garage their vision was clear: It was an excellent opportunity to add value to their home and make the space feel special “Our house had been flipped and felt sterile,” she said “Our ADU was a fun way for us to create something personal.” The couple embarked on the project in 2020, collaborating with architect Susan Nwankpa Gillespie of Nwankpa Design Marina and Gillespie had worked together on architectural projects in the Hollywood Hills including an elusive contractor and less-than-ideal timing “We were a COVID-19 casualty when it came to plan check and permitting,” Marina says “We keep the doors open in the ADU and I can see the boys playing with their train sets while I’m cooking dinner in the main house,” says Marina Martos Dabel “It was a long process,” adds Pascal which had been budgeted at $300,000 before the pandemic by taking advantage of low interest rates and tapping into their equity and savings “We thought it was a smart investment,” Marina says Gillespie acknowledges that while ADUs started as an accessible way to create more affordable housing, the skyrocketing cost of construction, including the price of lumber, has put them increasingly out of people’s reach. Marina Martos Dabel stands inside the lower level of the ADU. “I feel like it’s an extension of the house,” she says. “Much of it depends on the contractor,” Gillespie says. “If someone is good, they’ll work on larger projects [that go for higher bids]. No one is hurting for work right now. The best way to move forward with a contractor is to get recommendations and talk to people. If you build an ADU, you must decide if the cost is worth it.” Having previously worked together a few years ago on updating the interiors of the Dabels’ cookie-cutter house, Gillespie and Marina were in sync from the start. “We set variables for the small space,” Gillespie says. “They wanted to do two stories. The downstairs needed to be flexible. They wanted a deck, a garage, a private space and a common space.” The kids play in the second-floor bedroom, which opens to an outdoor deck paved in a patchwork of blue concrete tiles. Storage was also a requirement for the ADU. “We needed a place to hide the toys,” Marina laughs, referring to the surplus of Legos belonging to her sons, Lucien, 3, and Lorenzo, 7. Gillespie drew up three or four plans for the ADU, and the ultimate creation is a winner: an 1,182-square-foot modern one-bedroom home with a full kitchen, two bathrooms and a 281-square-foot roof deck built on top of the existing two-car garage. Lifestyle Small-space living doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style or succumb to clutter. Because the lawn and paved areas on the 6,000-square-foot lot are already taken up by the family’s activities, the second-story deck became an essential part of the ADU’s design. (The Dabels had hoped to add a steel trellis to screen out harsh sunlight, but after receiving a bid of $50,000, they decided to go with an umbrella instead.) “If we ever rent it out, any tenant is going to want their own private outdoor space,” says Marina. The homeowners also could add a fence between the two homes, which are 35 feet apart, for further privacy. Gillespie agrees, saying: “I like having punches of nature and privacy, especially in an urban context. Even though there is still a yard, outdoor space is important for whoever lives in the ADU. The roof deck became another oasis and entertaining space.” The roof deck, laid out above the two-car garage, serves as a private oasis. Keeping the ground floor free and clear also offers options for future aging-in-place needs. “Aging in place is tough with stairs,” Gillespie says. “But they could turn the downstairs into a bedroom space.” The sunny second floor serves as the primary bedroom, complemented by white oak floors, a bathroom and a large closet that houses a washer and dryer. The expansive bedroom, which could easily accommodate a desk or a Peloton bike, is illuminated by skylights and opens to the outdoor deck, which is paved with a patchwork of blue Zia cement tiles. Both floors feature bold color choices, including tangerine-colored cabinets in the kitchen, a perforated metal panel stairway painted a soft green, a kitchen backsplash in a soft mocha Zia tile and green tile in the shower. “We want things to be fresh, fun and playful but still sophisticated,” Gillespie says. “But it doesn’t have to be just primary colors. We used lots of textures.” “An ADU is a great opportunity to design something fun and aspirational,” says architect Susan Nwankpa Gillespie. “It’s an opportunity to play a little bit.” The Dabels, whose bedroom in the main house is upstairs and looks across the yard into the ADU, requested privacy for both homes. “I didn’t want to look into the bedroom behind us,” Marina says. “That is why the windows go north-south and not east-west.” Inspired by the diverse population of Los Angeles, Gillespie, who is Nigerian American, wrapped the exterior of the second floor — a windowless blank stucco façade — in vertical 2½-by-6-foot timber slats installed in a wood pattern reminiscent of hand-woven West African kente cloth. In contrast with the downstairs, the second floor appears to float above the ground floor. “I am interested in living in a Western context architecturally, but with such a diverse population in Los Angeles, I thought about creating an interesting mix of modernist principles and West African textiles,” Gillespie says. “Part of it was softening the severity of a typical solid façade by creating more of a craft feel.” The Dabels are happy with the results: ample room to park multiple cars in the newly paved driveway, a concrete pad with enough space for a basketball court and a small patch of lawn where their sons can play with the family’s dogs, Gringo and Sedona. For now, the ADU feels like an extension of the main home. Marina and Pascal laugh when they recall their November Friendsgiving, which spilled out of their home and into the ADU. “It was packed,” Pascal says. “We had more than 60 people here, including about 30 kids. There were people on the stairs and the balcony. We even squeezed in a bounce house.” Adds Marina: “The ADU is where people love to congregate.” Lorenzo Dabel, 7, looks over a chalk drawing he made for his parents. Although the couple has enjoyed hosting friends and family, including relatives from Argentina and Pascal’s mother from Georgia — she refers to the ADU as her “resort” — they have always intended to rent the backyard home. However, that was before fires ravaged Pacific Palisades and Altadena this month. Small-space living doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style or succumb to clutter they are housing a friend’s multigenerational family of five “We won’t be renting the place out for now,” Marina says “but we will make it available to friends and family as needed They very much want to be back home but have no idea when water service will resume or be safe to use So we offered to let them come whenever they needed for showering They’re finding it more challenging to be home than they had hoped They’re very dear friends; it’s the least we could do to help.” Lisa Boone is a features writer for the Los Angeles Times. Magán strengthens its team in Vigo with… Concepción Pilar Barrio President of Spain’s Notarial Council Volume 16 - 2024 | https://doi.org/10.3389/fnagi.2024.1394460 Introduction: The lack of cognitive awareness is a clinical deficit in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) dementia an increased awareness of cognitive function may serve as a marker in the preclinical stage Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) might correspond to the initial symptom in the dynamic trajectory of awareness but SCD might be absent along with low awareness of actual cognitive performance in the preclinical stage We hypothesized that distinct meta-cognitive profiles This research evaluated the association between cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) AD biomarkers and the awareness of episodic memory further exploring dyadic (participant-partner) SCD reports in the preclinical Alzheimer’s continuum Methods: We analyzed 314 cognitively unimpaired (CU) middle-aged individuals (mean age: 60 Episodic memory was evaluated with the delayed recall from the Memory Binding Test (MBT) was defined as the normalized discrepancy between objective and subjective performance and dyadic SCD profiles incorporated the study partner’s report using parallel SCD-Questionnaires The relationship between CSF Aβ42/40 and CSF p-tau181 with meta-memory was evaluated with multivariable regression models The role of SCD and the dyadic contingency was explored with the corresponding stratified analysis Results: CSF Aβ42/40 was non-linearly associated with meta-memory showing an increased awareness up to Aβ-positivity and a decreased awareness beyond this threshold the non-linear association between CSF Aβ42/40 and meta-memory persisted higher Aβ-pathology was linearly associated with increased awareness Individuals presenting only study partner’s SCD exhibited higher levels of CSF p-tau181 correlated with lower meta-memory performance Discussion: These results suggested that distinct meta-cognitive profiles can be identified in preclinical-AD While most individuals might experience an increased awareness associated with the entrance in the AD continuum some might be already losing insight and stepping into the anosognosic trajectory This research reinforced that an early anosognosic profile although at increased risk of AD-related decline might be currently overlooked considering actual diagnostic criteria and therefore its medical attention delayed a critical point in the field is to uncover the biological and behavioral underpinnings of the disease’s trajectory allowing early detection and intervention at the preclinical stage of the Alzheimer’s continuum An impaired meta-cognition in AD due to anosognosia might come along with a widespread range of clinical implications Improving our understanding of the cognitive and pathological underpinnings of anosognosia would enhance preclinical stage identification informing about risk of progression and more precise therapeutic interventions it is unclear how to delineate the spectrum of distinct subclinical alterations in the awareness of cognitive function present in preclinical-AD Considering here the discrepancy between objective and subjective memory performance they showed that AD dynamically impacts awareness of episodic memory function Their results indicated that in CU individuals Aβ-pathology was associated with increased awareness of cognitive function while Aβ-pathology in MCI patients was associated with reduced awareness of cognitive function indicating a switch in the trajectory of meta-cognition in AD indicating that Aβ-pathology was non-linearly associated with awareness of episodic memory (objective-subjective discrepancy) showing hypernosognosia up to the threshold of Aβ-positivity and anosognosia beyond the threshold of the Alzheimer’s pathological change These results were discussed considering that frontal amyloid deposition might interfere with regions/networks of awareness and cognitive control suggesting that the non-linear impact on awareness thus might relate to the advancement of Aβ-pathology seems reasonable that distinct meta-cognitive profiles might emerge in preclinical-AD at very early stages in the preclinical Alzheimer’s continuum there may be two distinct types of metacognitive profiles at risk of AD-related impairment: (I) Hypernosognosia: Individuals with a sub-estimation of actual memory performance showing an increased awareness in relationship to AD neuropathology (II) Anosognosia: Individuals with an over-estimation of actual memory performance showing a decreased awareness in relationship to AD neuropathology The main objective of the present research was to test this hypothesis in the ALFA+ cohort study by evaluating the association of Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) Aβ and Tau biomarkers with awareness of episodic memory the role of self-reported and dyadic (participant-partner) SCD was further explored in these associations at the preclinical stage of the Alzheimer’s continuum A detailed phenotyping of the participants involved blood and CSF sample collection for biomarker determination as well as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET) acquisition The ALFA+ inclusion criteria were: (1) individuals who had previously participated in the ALFA study; (2) age between 45 and 65 years at the inclusion in ALFA; and (3) long-term commitment to the study: inclusion and follow-up visits and agreement to undergo all tests and study procedures (MRI ALFA+ exclusion criteria were: (1) cognitive impairment (Clinical Dementia Rating [CDR] > 0 Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) < 27 or semantic fluency < 12); (2) any systemic illness or unstable medical condition that could lead to difficulty complying with the protocol; (3) any contraindication to any test or procedure; and (4) a family history of monogenic AD we included 314 individuals with complete CSF biomarker measurements The ALFA+ study (ALFA-FPM-0311) was approved by the independent ethics committee ‘Parc de Salut Mar’, Barcelona, and registered at Clinicaltrials.gov (identifier: NCT02485730) All participants signed the study’s informed consent form also approved by the independent ethics committee ‘Parc de Salut Mar’ Cerebrospinal fluid sample collection and processing followed standard procedures (Teunissen et al., 2014), which have been previously described (Milà-Alomà et al., 2020) CSF Aβ40 and Aβ42 were measured with the exploratory NeuroToolKit a panel of robust prototype immunoassays (Roche Diagnostics International Ltd CSF p-tau181 and t-tau (both corresponding to the mid-region domain of tau protein) were measured using the electrochemiluminescence Elecsys® Phospho-Tau (181P) CSF and Elecsys Total-Tau CSF immunoassays on a fully automated cobas e 601 module (Roche Diagnostics International Ltd All CSF biomarker measurements were determined at the Clinical Neurochemistry Laboratory at the University of Gothenburg The Memory Binding Test (MBT) (Buschke, 2013) Spanish version (Gramunt et al., 2016) was used to assess verbal episodic memory through associative learning The variables used in the present research to assess objective performance considered the two delayed recall measurements (30 min after learning): the total delayed free recall (0–32) and the total delayed paired recall (0–32) Participants were instructed to self-rate their overall performance in a single score ranging from 0 (worst possible performance) to 100 (best possible performance) after completing both delayed recall tasks Objective episodic memory performance resulted from the arithmetic mean of the delayed recall (considering the total delayed free recall and the total delayed paired recall) objective performance was normalized to a scale from 0 to 100 A multivariable regression model was used to extract objective and subjective residual memory scores adjusted for demographic effects (sex Considering the full sample of participants objective and subjective residual scores were standardized dividing the residuals of each regression model by their estimated standard deviation Meta-memory standardized residuals were computed subtracting subjective from objective standardized residuals with positive scores indicating sub-estimation and negative scores indicating over-estimation of actual episodic memory performance The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) (Zigmond and Snaith, 1983) was used to assess affective symptoms The variables used in the present research were the anxiety (0–21) and depression (0–21) sub-scores from the HADS The analyses were divided into three main blocks main analyses in the whole sample evaluating associations between meta-memory and CSF biomarkers using two models with the same predictors but in distinct subsets of the sample (non-SCD and SCD) stratified analyses once the study partner’s SCD report was incorporated combining it with the self-reported SCD measurements previously explored we considered to focus only on the subset characterized with presence of study partner’s SCD: within this subset the sample was further stratified considering the self-reported SCD there were “unaware decliners” (only the study partner presented SCD) and “aware decliners” (self-reported SCD confirmed by the study partner) All CSF measurements and meta-memory scores were treated as continuous variables and tested for normality using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov normality test and visual inspection of histograms. In line with previous work, extreme values were excluded for CSF biomarkers (outlier threshold of 3 times the Interquartile Range [IQR]) (Milà-Alomà et al., 2020) The CSF Aβ42/40 ratio followed a normal distribution but the CSF p-tau181 was not normally distributed and was log10-transformed Meta-memory scores followed a normal distribution In the main multivariable regression model we evaluated the relationship between CSF biomarkers and meta-memory standardized residual scores adjusted for demographics incorporating a quadratic term for CSF Aβ42/40 and the interaction between CSF p-tau181 and the quadratic term for CSF Aβ42/40 there is no literature suggesting that tau (presumably impacting medial temporal lobe) might induce non-linear changes in cognitive function prior to clinical onset The assumptions of the multivariable regression models were statistically tested for normality Standardized β coefficients with 95% confidence interval (CI) and corresponding p values were reported was used to analyze associations between meta-memory and CSF biomarkers only after incorporating study partner’s SCD data since the low sample size restricted the use of inferential statistics Spearman correlation coefficients with corresponding p values were reported p values < 0.05 were considered statistically significant and p values < 0.1 were considered as trends All computational procedure and statistical analyses were performed using R along with descriptive characteristics about study partners Participant-partner contingency by SCD status is shown in Table 2 study partner’s SCD was defined in seven (3.01%) individuals (characterized as unaware decliners; only the study partner presented SCD) and study partner’s non-SCD was defined in two-hundred twenty (96.91%) individuals (characterized as controls; neither participant nor partner reported SCD) study partner’s SCD was defined in five (5.75%) individuals (characterized as aware decliners; self-reported SCD confirmed by the study partner) and study partner’s non-SCD was defined in eighty-two (94.25%) individuals (characterized as SCD not confirmed by the study partner) Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) status by participant-partner parallel questionnaires These results show a non-linear pattern (inverted-U shape) with increased awareness of episodic memory (i.e. hypernosognosia) being associated with lower Aβ42/40 levels up to approximately the threshold of Aβ-positivity (CSF Aβ42/40 < 0.071) anosognosia) being associated with lower Aβ42/40 levels after surpassing the threshold of Aβ-positivity Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers associated with meta-memory standardized residuals Scatter plot showing the relationship between CSF Aβ42/40 on the side of each plot To further explore the contribution of dyadic SCD reports in this section we considered exclusively the subset of participants with study partner’s SCD (3.82%) seven individuals (58 %) were defined as unaware decliners (non-SCD & study partner’s SCD) and five individuals (42 %) were defined as aware decliners (SCD & study partner’s SCD) meta-memory standardized residuals were evaluated using Spearman correlation matrices with CSF Aβ42/40 meta-memory was significantly correlated with CSF p-tau181 (r = −0.857 but not with CSF Aβ42/40 (r = 0.571 meta-memory was correlated at the trend level with CSF p-tau181 (r = −0.900 but not with CSF Aβ42/40 (r = −0.500 Although higher levels of anxiety were significantly associated with increased meta-memory (β = 0.131 the effect of the quadratic term of CSF Aβ42/40 remained significant in the model (β = −0.142 higher levels of depression were associated with increased meta-memory (β = 0.100 p = 0.082) while the effect of the quadratic term of CSF Aβ42/40 remained significant in the model (β = −0.134 two distinct types of metacognitive profiles at risk of AD-related decline could be delineated: along with an increased awareness in relationship to AD-neuropathology This increase in awareness is expected to anticipate gradual meta-cognitive decline with further disease progression along with decreased awareness in relationship to AD-neuropathology This decrease in awareness is expected to anticipate substantial meta-cognitive decline with further disease progression suggestive of greater risk of Alzheimer’s severity Our findings support the existence of these two groups indicating that distinct meta-cognitive profiles may emerge in preclinical-AD results in the non-SCD subset showed a non-linear association between Aβ and meta-memory similar to the relationship found in the whole sample with increased awareness up to Aβ-positivity and decreased awareness beyond this threshold results in the SCD subset showed a linear association between Aβ and meta-memory with higher Aβ-pathology associated with increased awareness These results suggested that while some individuals might notice subtle cognitive changes (SCD) associated with the entrance in the AD continuum (defined by the Aβ-positivity threshold) others may not be fully aware of these subtle changes (non-SCD) Although these groups differ in SCD status both support meta-cognitive profile (I) hypernosognosia showing sub-estimation of actual memory performance associated linearly and non-linearly we explored the contribution of the study partner’s SCD those individuals presenting only study partner’s SCD revealed a distinct pathological link with meta-memory performance showing that increased levels of CSF p-tau181 (i.e. higher pathology) correlated with lower meta-memory performance those individuals presenting study partner’s SCD but now in agreement with self-reported SCD revealed a similar link with meta-memory performance: showing that increased CSF p-tau181 was correlated these results rapidly suggested that the absence of SCD should not be taken as guarantee of cognitive stability both unaware and aware decliners exhibited a similar relationship between CSF p-tau181 and meta-memory performance Although these groups also differ in SCD status both support meta-cognitive profile (II) anosognosia showing over-estimation of actual memory performance in linear relationship to higher tau-pathology improving our understanding of the pathological mechanisms behind anosognosia would provide useful methods and knowledge as defined by the participant-partner discrepancy in SCD was quite infrequent in our sample (n = 7) but similar in sample size to the group of aware decliners (n = 5) Among participants presenting study partner’s SCD some participants did not present awareness of cognitive decline while other participants reported SCD in agreement with their partner (58–42% in our sample Further development of methodology for defining this group at risk might consider applying a cut-off in the objective-subjective discrepancy in neuropsychological performance to capture a larger group of individuals with similar performance characteristics helping to understand better why some individuals might display a reduced awareness of cognitive function from very early stages longitudinal research needs to account for the characterization of this early anosognosic trajectory and its pathological correlates (in preparation) we acknowledge that using more liberal cut-offs for classifying pathological status This research suggested that distinct meta-cognitive profiles can be identified at the preclinical stage of the Alzheimer’s continuum While most individuals might experience an increased awareness associated with the entrance in the AD continuum (i.e. some others might be already losing awareness (i.e. Reduced awareness of cognitive function at preclinical stages of AD might currently be overlooked leading to the omission of some individuals at higher risk of cognitive decline who may not be considered in prevention studies This research suggested that further characterization of these meta-cognitive profiles might enhance preclinical stage identification providing insights into the likelihood of clinical progression from the very early stages in the Alzheimer’s continuum The data that support the findings of this study are available from the corresponding co-authors The studies involving humans were approved in the ALFA+ study (ALFA-FPM-0311) by One of the biggest challenges female disruptors face is equality in the industry My advice for women disruptors everywhere is to go for what they want in their careers and not to give up Women should hone the skills necessary to give themselves those opportunities As a part of our series about women who are shaking things up in their industry Martos is a Cosmetic Dentist providing services of oral hygiene and dental beautification in her clinic My Smile Miami She has been serving the community of Miami for over two decades She is recognized for her services over time our readers would like to get to know you a bit more Can you tell us a bit about your “backstory” What led you to this particular career path I was really young when my grandfather died of cancer and doctors thought his habit of smoking and bad oral health was to blame I decided to save people from such a disease and all I could think of was to become a dentist I enrolled myself in the University of Havana for a degree in Dental Medicine and then went on to get into Nova Southeastern University’s prestigious dental school I didn’t hesitate to jump into my first job — opening a private office in Miami with the most up-to-date technology and equipment I have always been passionate about dentistry and my main focus is to educate my patients about oral health and provide them with the best care Can you tell our readers what it is about the work you’re doing that’s disruptive I have been helping people of color with dark gums issues I have introduced the Gum Bleaching facility at My Smile Miami often known as “black gums,” is a condition in which melanin occurs on the gum tissue’s surface It affects people of all races and ethnicities but it is more prevalent in those with darker skin Hyperpigmentation can occur naturally or as a result of smoking Hyperpigmentation is harmless and does not cause any health problems but some individuals simply desire even pink gums I am among those few dental professionals who have turned to the iTero Element Scanner for fast I employ this simple-to-use scanner to get intraoral digital scans and create accurate physical dental models for restorative procedures This scanner also aids me in identifying orthodontic issues and developing the most effective treatment plans for my patients Can you share a story about the funniest mistake you made when you were first starting Can you tell us what lesson you learned from that and I was doing a complicated tooth extraction when my cell phone started to ring and that too with a wildly inappropriate ringtone… “I Will Survive,” by Gloria Gaynor I always kept my cell phone silent while in my clinic We all need a little help along the journey Can you share a story about how they made an impact and I owe a great deal of respect and admiration to her She made me realize that helping others can give you immense satisfaction and contentment Her work ethic taught me how to stay focused on work and how to strike a balance between work and family she once missed her flight to England for a very prestigious conference because she had to treat a patient with a severe dental injury in a road accident This level of commitment to helping people is what has made an impact on me being disruptive is usually a positive adjective that a system or structure has ‘withstood the test of time’ Can you articulate to our readers when disrupting an industry is positive and when disrupting an industry is ‘not so positive’ Can you share some examples of what you mean Disrupting an industry can be both positive and negative It depends on the service it is offering to the community and the Internet are some of the things that positively impact the dental industry corporate dentistry brings about change that’s causing a lot of stress among dental professionals This “disruption” is not so positive and cannot be ignored It must be actively addressed for private practices to survive and thrive Can you share 3 of the best words of advice you’ve gotten along your journey “A great dentist should be very detail oriented,” and his words stayed with me While working in such a small space as the mouth one can’t afford to miss even the smallest of details Observation and attention to detail are what dentistry is all about It helps to indicate some bodily ailment or a dental problem at the initial stage Caroline made me realize the importance of strong interpersonal skills that make all the difference I have learned the art of making my patients feel comfortable and putting them at ease Being very kind and compassionate with my patients has played a vital role in making me successful in my career My mother once advised me always to have a great desire to learn because it makes me different from the rest and new technologies are being introduced every day that make dental procedures more comfortable My desire to learn and master all the latest technologies and science in dentistry makes me stand out from the rest I am working on offering tele dentistry services Companies like The Teledenists and MouthWatch have successfully established that providing easier access to oral and dental care is possible Tele dentistry is significantly cheaper and allows patients to consult with otherwise unavailable medical professionals I am currently working on creating an all-in-one tele dentistry platform that will allow patients to capture images send relevant information to my team of dentists remotely As remote care’s significance swelled during the pandemic and The American Dental Association has issued a policy on tele dentistry that offers guidance on the modalities that such services can follow I believe the future belongs to tele dentistry and will eventually make it a general practice what are the biggest challenges faced by ‘women disruptors’ that aren’t typically faced by their male counterparts Garnering support from other women is another challenge faced by female disruptors Women should support and empower each other starting with their basic principles of who they are — their morals Do you have a book/podcast/talk that’s had a deep impact on your thinking This amazing show features women who have overcome incredible hardship to achieve massive success The mission of this podcast is to empower all women to recognize that they really can become the hero of their own life If you could inspire a movement that would bring the most amount of good to the most amount of people I would love to do something massive in the field of tele dentistry making it a thing that will no longer be exclusive to the elite Software enhancements and developing technologies have made it easier for dentists and patients to meet on digital platforms and start connecting I want to build an App or a web-based platform that can pave the way and turn teledentistry into a tech-centered industry I am already working on developing a tele dentistry app that will network thousands of patients and dentists together from all over the world Can you please give us your favorite” Life Lesson Quote” Can you share how that was relevant to you other police executives and discussed lessening discipline against a female officer based on her attractiveness The Phoenix Equal Opportunity Department “otherwise substantiated” multiple allegations against then-Assistant Chief Steve Martos Those allegations include Martos calling a top African American officer “Blackie” and separately telling other assistant chiefs that he wanted to “save” a female officer who was caught using the n-word on body camera Both incidents were alleged to have happened in May 2021 under former Chief Jeri Williams’ administration Investigators also found Williams’ second-in-command witnessed Martos’ actions but failed to report and address the misconduct Phoenix acknowledged the EOD report but said it was just “one step” in an ongoing investigation so drawing any conclusions would be premature,” a city spokesperson wrote Phoenix’s full statement can be found at the bottom of this report he retained a lawyer ahead of ABC15’s report and threatened to take legal action In statements sent on behalf of Kurtenbach his representatives said he was not found in violation of policies before he retired earlier this year and added that the EOD report was a “draft document.” The EOD report is titled “Final Investigative Report,” and it was sent with a cover letter to multiple city leaders and HR officials The report further documents systemic issues with Phoenix police and highlights the dysfunction and deception at the top of the department The allegations against Martos and Kurtenbach were made by three former assistant chiefs, who are currently suing the city because they claim they were unfairly demoted and scapegoated for a separate scandal involving protesters falsely charged as gang members The former three assistant chiefs are Gabe Lopez, Lawrence Hein, and John Collins; and they made the allegations while they were under a separate internal investigation because of secret recordings obtained by ABC15 SECRET RECORDINGS: Top cops say Phoenix Police Chief Williams misled public about protest scandal One community leader said he was not surprised by the messy situation based on past and ongoing problems with Phoenix police ‘the fish rots at the head,’ it just goes down,” said Larnell Farmer a leader with the West Valley NAACP and retired police detective from Illinois “It’s only as good as the people running the organization.” At the time of the substantiated allegations Martos was the assistant chief in charge of overseeing the department’s internal affairs unit He’s now a commander in the patrol division he retired in early 2023 and took a job overseeing security for Arizona’s Department of Education multiple assistant chiefs were discussing recent promotions during a meeting on the top floor of Phoenix police headquarters One of them was the promotion of an African American lieutenant to commander The copy of the EOD report obtained by ABC15 has the employee’s name redacted but the station confirmed the chiefs were discussing Derek Elmore The three assistant chiefs who made the allegation claimed that Martos had trouble remembering Elmore’s name and referred to him as “Blackie” at least once “That’s just Steve being Steve,” records show But Martos and Kurtenbach denied the slur was ever used when interviewed by EOD investigators “(Kurtenbach) finally noted that the timing of this allegation was suspect as the conduct at issue was not recent and the allegation was made after three individuals were reassigned from Assistant Chiefs to Commander positions and because they had recently filed a lawsuit against him in particular,” according to internal investigators The EOD report did a credibility analysis on the three assistant chiefs and outlined a dozen reasons why the investigators felt their allegations and interviews about what happened were believable “It’s always important to go back into that officer’s career and see if those biases were placed on people he arrested or any cases they were involved in,” he said if you got somebody with that mindset investigating other officers The three assistant chiefs also alleged that Martos talked about lessening discipline against a female officer because of her attractiveness The chiefs claimed that Martos had shown them photos of the woman to prove his point Phoenix police began investigating Officer Andrea Tenuta because she was caught referring to an African American woman as the n-word on body camera “Lopez reported that during a conversation about Ofc That’s a terminating offense,’ Assistant Chief Martos brought over a picture of her possibly from Instagram and said who served as a department public information officer for years denied that he ever made such a statement and further told investigators that he didn’t know how to access social media to view images Kurtenbach also denied that he ever witnessed Martos talking about lessening discipline for women based on their appearance ABC15 confirmed she’s now on the “Brady” list The final EOD investigation was sent to interim Chief Michael Sullivan and other top city leaders on November 18 reorganized his executive leadership team in December but it’s not clear if the reduction in rank was because of the EOD report who was the target of the alleged racial slur He did not provide a comment for this report While the EOD investigation found the allegations against Martos and Kurtenbach “did in fact occur,” the city did not discipline them based on the report because the complaints were deemed to be “untimely.” EOD has found that some of the alleged conduct did in fact occur and could have violated (city rules) but for the time constraint,” according to the EOD investigation “Those allegations are being reported to PSB for review and determination as to whether some other policies have been violated.” PSB stands for the Phoenix Police Department’s “Professional Standards Bureau,” which is more commonly known as internal affairs “It’s important to point out the report you reference is not final product of the investigation but rather one step in our employee due process.” The statement added that Sullivan is “moving forward with a commitment to be a self-assessing “It’s going to be interesting to see what they say when this report comes out and what direction they want to go in,” Farmer said about city leaders “It’s going to say a lot about the new leadership in the police department I hope and pray the new chief does the right thing Phoenix is under a sweeping Department of Justice pattern or practice investigation A copy of Phoenix’s full emailed statement is below: It’s important to point out the report you reference is not final product of the investigation but rather one step in our employee due process The process includes sending the initial EOD report through the Investigative Review Process (IRP) where changes can be recommended The report then goes back to PSB for finalization so drawing any conclusions would be premature under the leadership of Interim Chief Michael Sullivan is moving forward with a commitment to be a self-assessing Chief Sullivan built a new executive leadership team An interview process was conducted for all executive positions The new executive team selected by Chief Sullivan is the team moving the department forward building a world class police department to service the residents and visitors of Phoenix A spokesperson for the Department of Education ABC 15 is basing this story on a draft investigative document for case #2023-00321 that was not finalized.  In February entered into a settlement agreement with Mike Kurtenbach in which the allegations brought against him were found to be unsubstantiated ‘The City agrees that after the administrative process all open City investigations involving allegations against Employee as of February 3 The City agrees that after the administrative process the allegations in Equal Opportunity Department ("EOD") Investigation #2023-00321 involving Employee that are untimely will be closed as Unsubstantiated.’ If ABC 15 intends to report otherwise Mike Kurtenbach will seek a remedy in court because ABC 15 now has the facts and anything to the contrary would not only be reckless but deliberately untruthful and therefore actionable under N.Y Kurtenbach’s attorney also issued a statement “The Phoenix Equal Opportunity Division conducted an investigation numbered 2023-00321 This investigation resolved with a finding of No Policy Violation EOD has a multi-step process for investigating allegations of alleged misconduct Even prior to the conclusion of the review process EOD determined that no policy violations occurred by Mr Kurtenbach honorably retired from the a copy of the 1982 edition from Image books Liguori Publications issued an “enlarged since that new edition doesn’t also say “revised,” we infer that while updated changes were made to jibe with more recent liturgical texts in the Church key problematic points regarding Church history and doctrine were not corrected from the 1982 edition affirming the words of Jesus Christ in Matthew 5 and 19: “If the man who has deserted his wife goes to another he is himself an adulterer because he makes her commit adultery; and the woman who lives with him is an adulteress because she has caused another woman’s husband to come over to her” (Letter 188 “In the case of a man deserted by his wife the cause of the desertion must be taken into account If she appears to have abandoned him without reason Pardon will be given to him that he may communicate with the Church” (XXXV) the husband can be pardoned if she left him without reason so that he can receive the Eucharist and other sacraments Basil never says that an aggrieved Christian husband is permitted to remarry in the event of abandonment by his spouse let alone when he abandons her simply to marry another and irrespective of whether he does any “penance” for leaving his spouse Basil also addresses a marriage between two unbaptized persons in which the wife is subsequently baptized a wife who is baptized after marriage should not leave her still unbelieving husband That would include in the pastorally challenging case in which the unbelieving husband is unfaithful and yet wants to remain with his believing spouse From an unbelieving husband a wife is commanded not to depart on account of the uncertainty of the issue “For what do you know whether you shall save your husband?” (1 Cor if she leaves her husband and goes to another But the man who has been abandoned is pardonable and the woman who lives with such a man is not condemned (Letter 188 The problem is not simply that the baptized wife left her husband but that she also took up with another man (i.e. though she certainly would not be beyond forgiveness and yet he himself must repent of any sin that contributed to his wife’s departure his receiving a lighter canonical penalty for his own misdeeds didn’t mean he’d be morally free to continue engaging in intimate relations with his non-spouse if he didn’t reconcile with his believing spouse it’s possible that their marriage could be dissolved under the Pauline privilege and that he could eventually remarry (see 1 Cor Undoubtedly, as the Catholic Encyclopedia makes clear in this article on divorce adulterous wives were subject to harsher canonical penalties than husbands in the early Church there was no allowance in the early Church for a husband in a Christian marriage to divorce his wife and remarry someone else while his wife remained alive (see also Basil Paul also teaches that a husband baptized after marriage should not leave his still-unbelieving wife if she desires to remain with him (1 Cor Martos substantiates his unreliability as a Catholic theologian in a more recent series of articles on the sacraments, “The Questionable Origins of the Sacraments,” which he published in 2015 The following excerpts from the introduction to this series will suffice as Martos’s assertions stand in stark contradiction to the Church’s teaching on the indissolubility of a valid marriage between two Christians (see CCC 1638-40 Catholic sacramental theology evolved through centuries during which creative thinkers such as St Thomas Aquinas unintentionally misinterpreted texts from the past and unwittingly assumed that ancient texts could be applied to church practices in their own eras Ideas and theories that once made sense in terms of people’s experience no longer make sense today the idea that marriage is indissoluble made sense when marriages were arranged by parents and divorce was socially impossible but it contradicts our experience as Christians living in the twenty-first century (bolded emphasis original For more on the sacraments and their origins, see our articles on “The Seven Signs” (and related scriptural footnotes in its CCC cites) and “To Be or eponymous new series accompanied by a selection of previous works offer a moment to ponder and admire the visual language that hints at countryside landscapes and clusters of forestry ongoing) utilises oil paints to create a depth that imitates a collage-like landscape Astley creates a camouflaged world in which the subject matter isn't obvious yet the angular shapes give the series an abstract feel Astley has presented an alternative natural world that juxtaposes neatly with Martos Gallery’s urban location The inspiration for these paintings came from the experiences Astley had working in college with individuals who had suffered head injuries which affected verbal and visual comprehension This impacted how the artist wanted to present the natural world The collage technique within the paintings adds a rendered texture allowing the viewer to wonder if the imagery is computer-generated The series’ imaginative aspects are further emphasised by the fact that Astley produced the works in a windowless studio ‘I am very interested in the underlying nature of reality and the way that people perceive the world. To me collage is very similar to the way that people actually see things We take in fragments of information through our eyes and senses and our brain fills in the gaps to make the world make sense and appear seamless ‘The basic themes in the Terrain paintings have to do with nature and the way we use our minds to collage together the image of a forest or a landscape using fragments of what we see pieces of tree and bush-like shapes are stitched together with painted hash marks that fill in gaps where there is little information.   ‘In the white paintings in the series I was particularly interested in when people have trouble mentally putting things together or remembering. Like when people have dementia a stroke or are simply becoming old.’ escapism and design stories from around the world direct to your inbox The exhibition also showcases Petracca Triple M Breakfast with Marto, Margaux & Dan; listen live from 5.30am weekdays on Brisbane’s 104.5 Triple M or download the LiSTNR App to grab the podcast NOW Randi Martos’ strong sense of community comes from her lifelong residency in Riverdale.  Martos was elected Female Democratic District Leader of the 81st Assembly District Martos for her work with Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz as well as with the Benjamin Franklin Reform Democratic Club and the Bronx Democratic Party.   Martos started her career as Community Liaison for Assemblyman Dinowitz She currently serves as the Assemblyman’s Chief of Staff overseeing the daily operations of the office legislative affairs and office publications as well as supervising staff in both the district and Albany offices.   Martos has been an activist for the local public schools since her son She started as a Parent Association library volunteer and was eventually elected President of the Parents Association, serving for three years Martos then helped spearhead a campaign to restructure MS 141 into a middle/high school; after a long intense battle in 1999 with the community school board and the school district Ms. Martos and others successfully created The Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy (RKA) Their goal was to create an excellent neighborhood based middle/high school to stem the tide of young families who were leaving their community This huge victory for the community is one of her proudest accomplishments.   Martos’ involvement in the public schools did not end there she brought her enthusiasm to RKA, when her son entered the school as a 6th grader she was elected Parents Association President and was subsequently re-elected six times making her the longest serving PA President for the school.   One reason Riverdale has remained such a special place to live and grow up in is its strong co-op presence Ms. Martos has served on her building’s co-op board for over 24 years spending 22 of those years as its President.   Whether it is functioning as a parent leader Martos has been a strong and positive force in the Bronx for over 20 years She is a tremendous asset to the community and one of the reasons Riverdale is such a wonderful place.   High school students participate in college-level artistic training in New York City and online These intensive and enriching courses are taught by Tisch  Phoenix is the opposite of New York in many ways it is a very young city with a vast urban sprawl The construction is mainly new and the spaces are very large I consider Phoenix to be a place where “unique things grow.” This is in reference to the plant life that is native only to the Sonoran Desert such as the Saguaro cacti that have become symbolic of the American Southwest through Western Movies I arrived here in NYC with absolutely no winter clothes but our airports do close down for extreme weather Once when the temperature surpassed 122 degrees they shut down the airport because they did not have aircraft performance charts for temperatures that high There is also a Wild West spirit of vigilantly justice that remains present most notably through the open carry laws permitting the display of firearms in public This is much different from laws in NYC that do not even allow for carrying knives Arizona might not be the first place to come to mind but there is actually a very active and thriving arts scene The artists are also incredibly politically active One of the highlights of the arts scene is “First Fridays” - one of the largest art walks in the nation that regularly has between 14,000 and 20,000 attendees each first Friday of the month What or who is inspiring you right now and why Current and emerging technology and its effect on our culture and society have been a great inspiration as of late Our relationship with technology is changing rapidly and consequently our social For me there is a great opportunity to explore original stories with plotlines that have never before been explored Right now I am obsessed with “Black Mirror.” Every episode deals with the technology of the near future and the societal consequences that these new technologies unleash The stories that emerge are completely original because of the subject matter Right now I am specifically exploring the topic of automated vehicles and the potential effect that it will have on our economy There will be truckers and cab drivers who will be replaced by automated vehicles and loose their jobs There will also be lost revenue from traffic citations On a positive note traffic fatalities will be decreased significantly our identity as Americans has long been influenced by car culture in terms of American individualism and freedom It is interesting to imagine how things might change with automated vehicles becoming ever present I am also a big fan of car chases and stunts which also makes this a topic of interest for me I am also fascinated by political humor as a tool for social change I find that people are often scared to talk about politics in general as it has the potential to cause some very heated responses I find that humor has a way of opening up the viewer without immediately setting them on the defense and therefore they can listen with a more open mind I have always been a big fan of Matt Stone and Trey Parker I am also following the Alec Baldwin SNL sketches with great interest What has been your most rewarding experience at NYU Tisch Grad Film so far My most rewarding experience was completing my second year film It is an Anti-Romantic comedy about a jaded woman who discovers her lust for blood and becomes a serial dater out with the vengeance She goes looking for love in all the wrong places It was an immense challenge and quite difficult to execute from all aspects including the technical The project pushed me past what I thought I was capable of I was also the lead actress and producer of a 2nd year film called “Numb” written and directed by one of my peers Penelope Lawson Although I am primarily a writer and director I also enjoy helping other directors bring their vision to life as a producer It was also my first time as the lead actress in a project I feel that the experience gave me a better understanding of what the actors have to go through as a process and feel in turn that it made me a better director as a result.
