Holding placards reading “People live here” and “We don’t want to see our island die” campaigners said changes must be made to the tourism industry that accounts for 35 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP) in the Canary Islands archipelago The organisations said local authorities should temporarily limit visitor numbers to alleviate pressure on the islands’ environment with curbs on property purchases by foreigners In Barcelona, diners were drenched with water pistols by disgruntled locals who called for holidaymakers to go home The Spanish locals chanted “tourists go home” with placards that read “Enough Let’s put limits on tourism” in the demonstration against overtourism Video footage showed holidaymakers dining outside popular squares in the city being doused with water of drowning at Maspalomas Beach located in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana The emergency services were alerted at 3:45pm on Saturday when the Canary Islands Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES) received an alert informing them that that a man had been pulled from the water in distress Red Cross personnel at the scene initiated basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) efforts on the beach until support arrived paramedics took over and performed advanced CPR techniques they were unable to revive the man and confirmed his death at the scene The National Police took responsibility for the deceased until the arrival of the judicial authorities who gave permission for the body to be removed for official identification and autopsy to determine the cause of death The San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council has approved urban development licences for two projects aimed at enhancing the municipality's luxury tourism and residential offerings in Maspalomas One licence has been granted to Bahía Feliz Invest S.L for the construction of a five-star luxury complex on Avenida Windsurfing in Bahía Feliz The project will consist of 13 high-end apartments for a total capacity of 80 guests The council describes this development as “an important step forward for the growth of the luxury tourism sector in the region catering to high-end visitors.” This project represents an investment of €1.7 million with construction expected to be completed within four years of its start date In addition to the Bahía Feliz development the council has given the green light the construction of eight exclusive villas in the Salobre Golf area this project aims to consolidate Salobre Golf as a premier residential destination designed to meet modern aesthetic and functional standards outlined in the General Urban Planning Framework (PGOU) This venture entails an investment of €1 million bringing the combined value of both projects to nearly €3 million The council emphasises that these projects will significantly contribute to the local economy creating jobs during the construction phase and through the eventual operation of the tourist complex Boosting Maspalomas as a Leading Destination The Council underlines the importance of these initiatives for bolstering the region’s tourism brand particularly the renowned Maspalomas Costa Canaria These developments are expected to enhance the municipality’s standing as a leading destination in the Canary Islands stressed the strategic importance of these projects: “From the Urban Planning department we continue to unlock key investments to foster the development of our municipality and create employment opportunities for our residents Our priority is to transform Maspalomas into an urban benchmark promoting a model that respects the environment while generating new opportunities for all.” expressed his satisfaction with the initiatives:“These two investments reaffirm our commitment to promoting high-quality aparthotel and residential offerings This pursuit of excellence strengthens our position as a competitive and attractive destination for tourism and residents alike.” The approval of these projects reflects the municipality’s focus on sustainable growth while maintaining its appeal to both international visitors and local residents Tuktuk excursions have been stopped in Maspalomas following routine inspections of the vehicles conducted by the Local Police and the Department of Transport and Urban Mobility uncovered a series of regulatory violations The authorities have warned that any continued operation of these electric vehicles may result in them being confiscated While other locations are working to establish specific regulations for tuk-tuks one of Spain’s top three tourist areas by overnight stays several infractions were discovered during the inspection prompting legal action against the only company offering these services each capable of carrying six passengers plus a driver was found to be operating without proper authorisation The issues identified included a lack of a transport permit from the Cabildo and the absence of complaint forms which are required by law the driver of the tuk-tuk stopped during the inspection didn’t-t speak any of the languages required for tourist guides tour operators that had been selling the tuk-tuk excursions in Maspalomas have been forced to cancel their contracts The company had been offering daily 90-minute family tuktuk excursions for €149 picking up clients from their hotels and taking them to key tourist sites such as the Maspalomas Dunes and viewpoints in San Agustín and Avenida de Francia including local delicacies like Moya biscuits and bottles of mojo sauce This sudden halt in tuk-tuk operations has raised questions about the future of such excursions and may prompt a broader discussion about tourist mobility options in the region Maspalomas is set to diversify its real estate market with its first residential development in over two decades The San Bartolomé de Tirajana Council have approved a significant project by Aedas Homes Canarias S.L.U. involving an investment exceeding €50 million in the town in the south of Gran Canaria The development will feature 96 single-family homes in El Hornillo The project will also include shared amenities such as swimming pools Construction is expected to begin within the next four years The project aligns with local urban planning goals to expand the housing market and enhance residents' quality of life the Councillor for Urban Planning and Housing emphasized that this marks the beginning of a broader initiative to increase housing availability in the municipality Future plans include unlocking land for construction and rehabilitating public housing stock we've tripled the number of licences granted," stated Marichal "This not only provides legal certainty for developers but also stimulates economic activity and job creation in the construction sector." This residential initiative signals a transformative phase for Maspalomas moving beyond its traditional focus on tourism to cater to long-term residents The development reflects a strategic commitment to balanced urban growth blending modern amenities with sustainable living solutions Nightlife in Gran Canaria's popular tourist areas continues to generate complaints and concerns from residents and holidaymakers While noise problems have long been a primary issue a new controversy has emerged: the presence of minors in nightclubs selling alcoholic beverages In a police operation during the early hours of Sunday morning the National Police identified 42 minors at two nightclubs in the bustling Plaza de Maspalomas shopping centre in Playa del Inglés a key area in Maspalomas within the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana while another 34 were discovered in a second establishment Laws state that people aged 16 and 17 can be waiters and waitresses but no-one under the age of 18 is legally allowed to pour or sell alcoholic drinks which took place between 2:15am and 4:45am was part of a broader initiative aimed at targeting drug trafficking and substance abuse This issue of underage staff adds to the long-standing problem of noise pollution from Maspalomas' nightlife venues Nearby hotels and residents frequently lodge complaints about loud music and disturbances that continue into the early hours further complicating the area's reputation as a tourist destination Authorities recently closed two clubs in the same area following complaints from a local hotel and nearby residents these closures have not resolved all concerns as other establishments continue to operate without adequately meeting noise regulations The situation highlights the tension between maintaining a vibrant nightlife scene to attract holidaymakers and ensuring compliance with legal and social norms to protect community well-being Local authorities are under increasing pressure to enforce stricter regulations and carry out more frequent inspections to address these dual challenges Efforts to mitigate these issues will likely require enhanced collaboration between the police and the local government to ensure Maspalomas remains an attractive yet orderly destination for visitors and residents alike The long-awaited Bear Carnival 2025 programme has just been released and is now has taken decisive action to curb excessive noise from local nightclubs in Maspalomas in Gran Canaria and holidaymakers staying in nearby hotels the Local Police enforced the “closure of the musical equipment” at two prominent clubs The action stemmed after a multitude of complaints lodged by nearby residents and guests at the H10 Playa Meloneras Palace a five-star hotel next to the affected nightlife venues officers executed an “Urban Discipline” order after concluding two separate infraction cases initiated by these complaints Despite only holding licenses to operate as a tapas bar (Mamajuana) and a cafe bar (Aqua Ocean Club) both establishments have DJs with loud music and hundreds of people The council emphasised that even in a bustling tourist area adherence to noise ordinances is mandatory to ensure a harmonious environment for all as emphasised by the mayor in a statement: "While Maspalomas thrives as a tourist destination it is essential to respect noise limits and uphold regulations to maintain a peaceful coexistence.” The actions taken against Mamajuana and Aqua Ocean Club serve as a reminder to all nightlife venues in the region to comply with local laws regarding noise levels Failure to adhere to these standards could result in further sanctions Residents and hotel management have welcomed the municipality's efforts to address noise pollution expressing relief at the enforcement of regulations that protect their right to a tranquil living and visiting environment As Maspalomas continues to attract visitors from around the world maintaining a balance between lively entertainment and peaceful surroundings remains a priority for local authorities In a bid to enhance the competitiveness and appeal of the Maspalomas Golf Course the Urban Planning Department of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council has put forth a significant redevelopment plan which is set to be discussed at the council meeting today (Thursday) includes the construction of a new hotel and 19 residential villas as part of the Strategic Environmental Assessment of the Urban Action Program (PAMU) The PAMU aims to reclassify the existing site providing comprehensive improvements in accessibility This initiative is expected to significantly boost the area's tourism appeal    - A new two-story hotel will be constructed on a 76,000 square metre plot This relocation and reorganisation of the hotel area    - The project also includes enhancing the clubhouse services ensuring visitors enjoy a more cohesive and luxurious experience    - The road network will undergo extensive renovations including the installation of pavements and energy-efficient LED lighting    - New roundabouts will be built to improve traffic flow and accessibility within the area    - The development of 19 single-story residential villas on a 25,700 square meter plot is planned These villas are designed to blend seamlessly into the landscape minimising visual impact while generating revenue to fund further upgrades    - The current 7,800 square metre commercial plot will be repurposed for hotel use and expanded to 19,300 square meters    - Two sports areas totalling 26,000 square metres will be transformed into a commercial sports complex and expanded to nearly 29,000 square metres to diversify the area's tertiary use offerings    - New urban parks and green spaces will be created    - The golf course facilities will be reorganised within the existing perimeter to improve their functionality the redevelopment will result in a comprehensive modernisation of the area without any cost to the municipal budget She highlighted the positive impact this will have on the area's competitiveness for tourists making it a more attractive destination.  The ambitious PAMU project underlines San Bartolomé de Tirajana's commitment to enhancing local infrastructure and promoting sustainable tourism growth the Maspalomas Golf Course is set to become a premier destination for both golfers and tourists seeking high-quality accommodation and recreational facilities No puedes copiar el contenido de esta página You don't have permission to newsletter and follow us on Instagram and X The Gran Canaria Cabildo and the Town Council in San Bartolomé de Tirajana (home to one of the most important natural spots on Gran Canaria the Natural Dune Reserve of Maspalomas) began to work on a master plan in late 2018 in an attempt to recover the dune ecosystem naturally It is a benchmark environmental project with the main aim of protecting and conserving the natural Dune area one of our most important environmental resources and a protected natural space with incalculable ecological value This pioneering conservation plan in Gran Canaria is initially planned to last two years and aims to maintain a unique ecosystem on the islands so that we can all keep on enjoying this natural paradise for a long time to come known as “Masdunas” thereby aims to prevent the disappearance of one of the most precious natural treasures in the south of Gran Canaria conserving its environmental values and ensuring its survival We do not want our island’s natural gem and important tourist spot to disappear and we are sure that you will also want to help conserve and care for it the dune system has suffered increasingly obvious degradation with a constant loss of sand mainly due to urban development processes and human impact which has altered the dynamics of the wind and the dunes It is estimated that around 45,000 cubic metres of sand are lost each year that end up at the bottom of the sea This has caused an uncontrolled increased in vegetation in the inner zones reducing the area occupied by the dunes and increasing the erosion affecting biodiversity and generating a very negative impact on the animals and plants living in the zone the dune reserve might disappear in less than a generation The Gran Canaria Cabildo and the San Bartolomé de Tirajana Town Council have agreed on this master plan to work on the natural recovery of the Maspalomas dune ecosystem that will take place in several phases Measures have already been brought in to protect the natural site by signposting recommended routes care for the fauna in the zone and setting up new information panels at entry points The Environmental Protection Plan for the Maspalomas Dunes also includes rehabilitation of 8 kilometres of paths and tracks that run through the reserve Swimmers and beachgoers will be able to continue enjoying our dunes as before This conservation plan never intended to prohibit access to the dunes but to guide people along a series of marked paths and tracks that will be compatible with protection and respect for the environment Caring for and maintaining such a valuable place as the Natural Dune Reserve of Maspalomas is everyone’s job Because it’s only with your help that we can make sure that this natural paradise Always keep to the marked-out areas and authorised path Do not use stones or other elements to make structures that change the landscape please remember that it is forbidden to camp here You can find more
