Olympiacos SFP and CN Sant Andreu all maintained their perfect records in the Champions League Women
A late FTC goal four seconds from time in Budapest sent their match against Mataro to a shootout
which the Spaniards won to seal their ticket to the Quarter Finals and hand Fradi their first defeat
The last Quarter Final berth will only be decided on day six and it’s still a three-horse race in Group C
after Alimos NAC Betsson beat SIS Roma in a thriller that was also decided by penalties
Dunaujvaros WPC (HUN) 9-12 Vouliagmeni NC (GRE) CN Terrassa (ESP) 4-13 Astralpool CN Sabadell (ESP)
Vouliagmeni made sure they remain in the contest for the top spot by beating Dunaujvaros away
even though the Greeks’ chances of overtaking Sabadell in the last round of group games are slim
didn’t hold anything back and despite Vouliagmeni jumping to an early 0-3 lead
the hosts rallied back in the second and went 5-4 up by half-time
it was the Greeks’ turn to stage a 0-3 rush
though a late action goal offered the Magyars some hope before the final quarter
Dorina Dobi added another goal from action for 8-9
Vouligameni’s response was swift and fast – a double from Lola Moolhuijzen in a span of 28 seconds
Dunaujvaros missed a crucial woman-up to stay close and Despoina Kalogeropoulou’s fine shot closed down the contest with 2:34 to go
although the hosts did manage a last-gasp consolation strike
Sabadell cleared their penultimate hurdle with ease
The title-holders visited fellow Spanish side Terrassa and kept the game under firm control
limiting their rivals to a single goal in each period while expanding the gap quarter-by-quarter
They led 2-6 at half-time and didn’t ease up in the the second half either
The result keeps Sabadell top of the group and they’re firm favourites to finish there
as they entertain Vouliagmeni at home in the last round
FTC-Telekom Waterpolo (HUN) 10-10 (3-4P) Assolim CN Mataro (ESP) Polar Bears (NED) 14-11 Antenore Plebiscito Padova (ITA)
produced a brilliant and entertaining match where the first period saw four goals apiece
an unusually high number of exclusions/penalties (12) fuelled their surge in the first half
though the Fradi defence withstood the pressure and trailed 5-6 at half-time
The Spaniards did well in the following period
but they denied the hosts in all but one while netting a penalty and an extra to lead 6-8 before the last eight minutes
they seemed to have the game in hand at 7-10 and the top spot was within their grasp as they had lost by two at home in the second round
returning after an absence of several months due to injury
then netted a six on five and after Fradi killed a woman-down
four seconds from time to level the scores at 10-10
This 3-0 rush put FTC back on top – the shootout win would have already secured the first place for them
after a couple of shots and misses at both ends
finally Eleftheria Plevritou hit the post in the sixth round while Martina Claveria scored again to hand Fradi their first loss this season in the Champions League
and they need a point in their last match against Polar Bears at home on day six to remain on top
The result also secured Mataro’s Quarter Final berth – but it turned out they could have afforded losing in regular time as Polar Bears brought down Padova
which ruined the Italians’ slim chances to go through
it was a balanced affair until the middle of the third period when it stood 8-8
Then the Dutch staged a 3-0 rush while their goalie Laura Steenbeek came up with a penalty stop and this proved to be decisive
An early goal in the fourth gave Polar Bears a 12-8 lead and Padova started to lack composure by losing one player after the other
five players finished the match earlier than expected and the home side never let the Italians back to the game
GZC Donk (NED) 13-17 Olympiacos SFP (GRE) Alimos NAC Betsson (GRE) 11-11 (4-3P) SIS Roma (ITA)
Five action goals and a perfectly played extra from Olympiacos set the tone in the Netherlands as the hosts Donk fought hard but couldn’t match the Greeks’ speed and precision
They trailed 3-6 after eight minutes and sank further in the second quarter as Olympiacos added four more from action and a penalty to build a massive 5-11 lead by half-time
as last season’s runners-up went on converting their extras
but it was affordable as they still netted 17 goals to maintain their perfect record
Their win was good news for fellow Greek side Alimos
as the winners of that clash were to gain a lot before the last round where second place in the group will be decided
It was a thriller right from the beginning
the Italians stormed to a 2-6 lead with four consecutive goals – then came the home side with a 4-0 run
the following minutes were rather disastrous for them
They were unable to score in the following seven minutes
while Roma converted three penalties and the hosts lost three players with three fouls and another one with a red card
they could finally force a penalty too and bury it
but it didn’t look good for them before the last period
though the five minutes went without a goal
Then Natasa Rybanska netted a six on five for 9-10
but Chiara Ranalli hit her seventh of the game to reset the two-goal gap
as Efstathia Kovatsevits replied from action with 1:20 on the clock and in their last possession
Alimos earned a woman-up and Afroditi Bitsakou made it with 0:20 on the clock
who scored the last goal which secured two points for Alimos – and the chance to make the Quarter Finals
while Roma is in a rough position as they play against Olympiacos at home on the last day
Orizzonte Catania (ITA) 15-4 BVSC-Manna ABC (HUN) CN Sant Andreu (ESP) 14-11 UVSE-Helia D (HUN)
Orizzonte made few mistakes at home against bottom-ranked BVSC
the only side besides Polar Bears which were yet to bag a point in the Group Stage
The Hungarians remained close at half-time
but the hosts had already took control and led 5-3
The second half was a rather lopsided affair
as Orizzonte dominated this part with a 10-1 blow-out
though they would need a miracle in their last home match
a seven-goal blast against Sant Andreu to grab the first place
The Spanish side had a tougher Hungarian rival this evening
The hosts rushed to a 3-0 lead and went on bossing the first half
Ariadna Ruiz netted a nice one from action and Nona Perez was fast to bury a late six on five
with 0:07 on the clock to make it 7-3 at half-time
bronze medallists last season perhaps sat too comfortable in the driving seat as they couldn’t react for a while to the surge of the Magyars
who forced two penalties in 37 seconds to halve the gap
Ariadna Ruiz came up with another big blast
and scored three more in a row to level up at 8-8 and even had an extra to take the lead but missed that
as she hit one from distance and Ariadna Ruiz netted a woman-up two seconds from time to bring some calm to the last break as Sant Andreu led again 10-8
Elena Ruiz netted her third of the night at the start of the fourth
then UVSE managed to respond twice to reduce the gap at two
but once Ariadna Ruiz scored her fifth of the game from an extra
UVSE missed their following two extras and when they scored again for 13-11
and Perez’s action goal decided the outcome 43 seconds from time and the Spanish remain well set to finish top

From the postal code '304' to the Berlin Olympic Stadium
One of the Euro 2024 stars was footballer Lamine Yamal
Doing the 3-0-4 symbol with his hands while celebrating some feats
or even carrying the Mataró flag (blue with a red cross) during the victory celebration
these were just some of the different symbols Yamal showed from his roots
And while Yamal celebrated the victory in Berlin, over 5,000 Mataró residents enjoyed Spain beating England 2-1 and winning the fourth Euro championship in the Parc Central, where a large screen was installed to watch the game.
During the night, a large Yamal poster served as a photocall, and family members made a video call with attendees ahead of the game. Many residents of the Rocafonda neighborhood have praised "the honor" of being neighbors with Yamal.
"This game is the most special one as it impacts us directly," Fernando, a young Mataró resident, told the Catalan News Agency (ACN) on Sunday night. He went to watch the game with two friends.
An all-female group highlighted that it was "a huge honor" that a player such as Yamal "has succeeded this much," and it is "the honor of a country," Aynara said.
Lamine Yamal just turned 17 years old on Saturday, the day before the final.
"Lamin is very good," Martín, a young fan, said.
"For me, it is an honor to be able to see someone I had so close take this center role at the Euro 2024," Azhar told ACN while wearing a Spain's football team t-shirt with the number 19 printed, Yamal's number.
In fact, Azhar had already met the footballer as he was a colleague on his brother's football team. "Years ago, you could already see that the way he was playing football was something other children could not do," he said.
The Mataró mayor, David Bote, celebrated the around 5,000 people gathered in the park to watch the game, "it is a way to accompany Lamine and his love for the Rocafonda neighborhood," he told ACN.
"Rocafonda is a complex neighborhood, but on Sunday, it also proved that the residents there have talent, and a lot of people want to push forward and keep growing," Bote said.

MACH transforms one of the old dwellings in Mataró to give light to A29 Unstable
is transformed into a luminous room thanks to the elimination of partitions and furniture that accompanies the elongated morphology of the building
After eliminating the wall that divided the day rooms and treating the façades
replacing the small windows with large windows and adding a new skylight in the room
all of this harmonised with light-coloured furniture
manages to make the interior a much brighter space than the previous one
The MACH project is distributed by placing the services and storage in a central core
what were previously individual divisions now work together to compose a continuous flow of space
The central piece of concrete is the protagonist of the studio
supported by the red shoring that now fulfils the function of the previous load-bearing wall
it manages to enhance the continuity of the dwelling while at the same time offering itself as a meeting point
The exterior courtyards are clad in glazed ceramic in reddish tones to match the joinery
Description of project by MACH
Between the hill of Cerdanyola and the Verador beach
the city of Mataró is organised around the old streams and torrents
residential buildings from the beginning of the 20th century
characterised by their level of self-construction and continuous transformations
coexist with an industrial fabric from the beginning of the century
The A29 studio is the result of a new transformation of a flat located in a typical building of the area between dividing walls and with elongated proportions
the result of several extensions and renovations
with small rooms and little natural light and ventilation
The proposal consists of seeking a strategy that organises and enhances the spaces in order to obtain as much light as possible
It is proposed to concentrate a core of services and storage in the centre of the floor plan
One of the main interventions consists of demolishing the wall of the old façade
which divided the living room from the kitchen and dining room
as well as the extension of the old gallery
in order to defragment the space and achieve an open and luminous space
as the only piece of furniture that forms part of the building and that takes centre stage in the space and generates a meeting place
the studio situated at the back of the plot and with external access is connected and visually linked to the flat through a new skylight and a patio clad in glazed ceramic

The referee blew the final whistle and the 5,000 people in Mataro’s Parc Central went wild. Everyone hugged each other and a child wearing Lamine Yamal’s shirt started to cry
clinging to the fence separating the spectators from the sound technicians
could be heard: “I’m taking the microphone just to say that a 17-year-old boy from our city has just won the Euro!”
a few metres away from the Mataro Park shopping centre
where a 14-year-old Yamal watched the last Euro final
He was still unknown to the general public back then and it could not have been imagined that he would be a key player in the next edition of the tournament
let alone play a starring role and get four assists
The postcode of the Rocafonda neighbourhood (08304) is known worldwide thanks to its prodigal son
The city council decided to put up a giant screen for residents to watch Spain in the final of the European Championship against England in one of the city’s most central parks
the city had been full of posters announcing they were going to provide an open-air place to watch the match
The square was filling up as kick-off approached
Yamal T-shirts were everywhere and there was a queue for a photocall with a picture of the 17-year-old
One of the T-shirts catches the eye. It had Yamal’s name on the back, of course, but it wasn’t a Spain shirt, it was Barcelona’s
“Lamine gave it to me,” Moussa Hamsa Dahbi said proudly
“I am a friend of the family and this is indescribable.”
The story behind the viral photos of Lionel Messi and a baby Lamine Yamal
the first chant began among about 50 people
sung to the tune of the Gipsy Kings’ Djobi
every day I love you more” (‘every day I love you more’)
“You see,” Hamsa Dahbi said to me with a smile
In the crowd, there are Spain T-shirts of all kinds. Those of players from days gone by, such as David Villa, with cracked lettering from the passage of time, contrasting with the pristine new white of those wearing Yamal’s number. It represented the generational change from one triumphant Spain to another
Some are wearing the kits of Morocco (the country from which Yamal’s father hails)
still saying they would have liked Yamal to defend their country’s colours
but they want Spain to win the final anyway and celebrate goals as if they were their own
with the crowd watching on the giant screen in Mataro still returning from the bar with a sandwich and a beer in hand
The euphoria was reaching a peak. Nico Williams had scored after a great intervention by Yamal and while the TV broadcast kept praising the Barca player
the assistants hugged each other and kept repeating his name
After the disappointment of England’s goal, the party started with Mikel Oyarzabal’s winner and Dani Olmo’s header off the line
the feeling was already there: Spain were going to be champions
everyone hugged each other and an incredibly large Spanish flag flew in the sky

“This is historic,” said a boy Yamal’s age to his girlfriend
A young boy was crying inconsolably alone on the floor of the square
He wiped his tears with his Spain T-shirt until his mother came to him and shook his hair in a loving gesture
A large group of friends were hugging and jumping
accompanied by the noise of firecrackers being thrown all around the city
the roar of which echoed depending on the distance at which they had been thrown
“Viva Rocafonda,” shouted some of those present
while on the screen Yamal was interviewed wearing the flag of Mataro around his waist
I just want to go and celebrate with my family,” said Yamal
as he was cheered thousands of kilometres away by his neighbours
A group of people at the back of the square started to make the 304 symbol
Two friends in their thirties hugged each other
both wearing Yamal’s shirt — one in the Barcelona jersey
the friend of Yamal’s family I had passed earlier
but we didn’t expect him to go so fast,” he says
He explains he has tried to call Yamal’s father but at that moment it is impossible to get them on the phone
while the big screen shows Yamal’s father on the Berlin pitch hugging his son and taking pictures with some of the players
Hamsa Dahbi says he is looking forward to seeing him in person and hugging him — that for him
“It is a source of pride for Mataro and the boys that Yamal is from this city.”
The square is emptying as people head home or to the beach to celebrate
The road fills up with cars flying the Spanish flag as they whistle to celebrate their country’s fourth European Championship victory

Mourvèdre, its name in the Rhône valley
is most famously one of the permitted varieties in Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Syrah and sometimes up to 10 other friends
I find in these blends the Grenache usually dominates
while Mourvèdre’s role is to lend structure and savoury notes
The obvious stylistic exception is Château de Beaucastel
which uses a high portion of Mourvèdre and is known for its structure and power
I love to pair this with a rich seafood paella
Travel further south in France to Provence
and you’ll find the grape used in high-quality rosés that (deservedly) command high prices – Domaine Tempier is one of the most iconic
The grape is also used in Provence to make reds with backbone
terracotta clay and squid ink are typical aromas and flavours
For more affordable options, head to Languedoc-Roussillon or even further into Spain
Monastrell – the Spanish version of the grape
hailing from Yecla or Jumilla – is another great standalone expression and perfect for those who like their wine with bolder blueberries and boysenberries
I tend to drink these wines when first released as they are from warmer
Finca Bacara’s Time Waits for No One from Jumilla (via Hallgarten Wines in the UK) is a great example of this style
and a surprisingly good match for a refreshing beetroot
More leftfield when it comes to Mourvèdre is the USA. The most famous producer of the grape here is Bonny Doon, from the San Francisco Bay region in California
Known for its playful labels and equally playful wines
it has a unique expression of Mourvèdre and blends featuring the variety; all are great with grilled rump steak with peppercorns
Lastly, my own home country, Australia. Over the last decade we have seen a surge in varietal examples. Championing the bigger, bolder styles, Travis Earth and Torbreck offer Barossa must-trys
while Syrahmi from Heathcote makes a lighter style
Australia 2022 is a collaboration between myself and childhood friend/winemaker Nadja Wallington of ChaLou Wines (@thesommandthewinemaker)

It really is the ultimate pizza wine – pepperoni topping preferred
The red Domaine du Gros’Noré, Bandol, Provence, France 2018 (gros-nore.com) is a great example of the backbone that Mourvèdre provides
Vouliagmeni, Team USA center Matt Farmer, and defender Dylan Woodhead defeated Ethnikos 21-6 in the Greek Championship Quarterfinals to advance into the Semifinals
Vouliagmeni gained a 5-0 lead in the first five minutes and ended the first half up 12-3
Vouliagmeni didn't slow down in the second half on its way to a fifteen goal edge

WA is home to some of the best wines in the world
with the Margaret River region in Australia’s South West a popular destination for wine touring
that’s usually Chardonnay for whites and Cabernet Sauvignon for reds.
On The Vine is a new series where we’re shining a spotlight on some of the other fabulous wines that we’re growing here in the state
we’re going to talk about a wine from one of the best-known wineries around — Cherubino.
Cherubino is a name that rarely needs an introduction
You’ve likely tasted Cherubino’s wine at some point
either while visiting the winery and cellar door in Margaret River or at Cherubino City Cellar — the tres chic wine bar in Subiaco
Regardless of where you’ve tasted their wine
one thing you’ll always hear is how good it is.
The Cherubino wine range is quite extensive
catering to a wide range of palettes and tastes
One of our favourite ranges under the Cherubino brand is Laissez Faire
they adopt a minimum intervention approach to winemaking and the end result speaks for itself.
In this ‘On The Vine,’ we’re taking a look at the 2021 Laissez Faire ‘IV’: Counoise
The first thing you’re likely thinking is “I’ve never heard of that type of wine before.” In WA
we’re so spoilt with the best cabernet sauvignon in the world that we often don’t try many other reds
it means we’re missing out on a heap of other wines that are likely going to become your new favourites
Grenache is a vegan wine grown in the Great Southern region of WA — one of the country’s best wine regions — and is described as a rich yet elegant wine
It has also won a heap of awards and accolades over the last couple of years
Everyone loves a fun fact that they can bring up at the dinner table or while sitting back
watching the sunset while enjoying a glass of wine
The main grape that makes up this wine (44%) is one that is relatively unknown here in WA — the Counoise grape — and is from the Rhône Valley in France
It’s rarely used as a single varietal so you’ll almost always see it in a blend
How you prepare a wine to drink can be quite important when it comes to bringing out its full and best flavour
You’ll want to serve this one at room temperature and if you have a decanter
it’ll benefit from being poured into one before serving
Plus it makes you look fancy and sophisticated
Simply open the bottle a couple of hours before you want to drink it (if possible) and leave it to breathe.
Believe it or not, the glassware you use when drinking wine can also make a difference in what it tastes like. For this wine, you want something quite bulbous with a narrower opening to maximise the aromas. Our favourites are the Plumm wine glasses — this is the glass in that range that you’ll want to go with
Have you ever noticed how wine can taste better with certain foods
Pairing the right food with the right wine can make a world of difference to the flavour and your enjoyment of both
This particular wine goes really well with rich flavours
Given we’re in the middle of a beautiful Perth spring
I’m going to suggest opening a bottle next time you’re preparing a platter of cheese and cured meats
You can’t go wrong with either option
The best place to get Laissez Faire ‘IV’ is directly from Cherubino
enjoy a glass of wine and some share plates
and go home with a few bottles of this wine to enjoy at home
You can also purchase it online from their online store or use it as an excuse to head away for a weekend away in Margaret River
dropping by their Cellar Door and making an experience of it

While most of the US cycling industry was down at the Sea Otter Classic
Fixed Gear Crit season started with a bang with the Mission Crit in San Francisco
Making its fixie crit debut was Aventon’s new Mataro
the latest and greatest fixie in their line-up
which proved its worth right off the bat topping the podium under Aventon sponsored athlete
What makes the new Mataro so exciting for me isn’t that it’s already grabbing medals
Aventon invited us out to experience this sleeper hit for ourselves at the VELO Sports Center in Carson California – the new Mataro definitely did not disappoint
It’s loaded with features that make it a pleasure to assemble and ride
you can have a complete bike that’s actually race ready
with a completely reasonable entry-level build
Aventon was created in reaction to the mass-produced
low price and low quality steel and aluminum bike brands that erupted with the fixie boom of the mid-aughts
Aventon founder JW was in college in the U.S
bearing witness to this explosion in colorful
having a family background in manufacturing
saw an opportunity to create a higher quality product within the similar price-point space
Whereas other brands playing on that field rely on a supply chain with built in layers of margin
through setting up and running their own manufacturing facilities
and a blended dealer network/consumer direct model
is able to keep layers of margin out of their product
As you will see with the new Mataro particularly
It feels and looks like a more expensive bike because it would be more expensive if it came through more traditional channels
it is clear that the new Mataro frameset is a cut above its predecessor
Rather than the straight steerer carbon fork and integrated headtube of the first generation model
interfacing with a nicely tapered headtube
The whole front end of the bike looks very deliberate and pulled together – far more graceful and modern than the prior version
the level of finish in the frame itself was much higher than expected for a bike of this price point
The smooth welded joints go together beautifully
The stays are finished and tucked-in at the dropouts
Aventon developed a custom seat tube and aero seatpost system for new Mataro that doesn’t just work well and make the bike look fast
but it allowed Aventon to pull the rear-center in five millimeters to a tight 380mm with clearance for 28mm tires
The wheelbase is about 10mm shorter on the new 55cm size at 965mm
with shorter stack across the board for riders who want to get low and pro
Aventon has also taken the new model opportunity to tweak their sizing
Tall riders can rejoice as a 61cm size frame has been introduced
the effective top tube and reach on the smallest size (49cm) frame have been extended
effectively cutting out smaller riders on the bell curve
there are fewer cockpit options to help mitigate fit issues
I was lulled into a false sense of security with the color scheme
When compared with the flashy and famous colorways popular at Red Hook Crit and other high level fixie crit races
matte navy blue (with what appears to be a light pearl) seems conservative
At this time this Midnight Blue colorway is the only color offering available
if previous Aventon models are any indication
I received the bike fully assembled for the test so
I missed the experience of pulling the bike out of the box and building it myself
Because Aventon works on a blended dealer and consumer direct selling model
they have invested in the consumer experience with this product starting with pulling it out of the box
Customers need only install the seatpost (saddle pre-installed)
claimed it took her a total of 20 minutes to put her bike together earlier that day.)
stock with the exception of my personal pedals
and the front brake and lever had been removed to make it track legal
The bike comes stock with a 48-15 fixed drivetrain (rather than coming standard with a lower gearing of a street fixie) signalling that this bike is a fixed race machine first and foremost
there are plenty of features in the spec that allow this bike to fare well on the street
A 16-tooth freewheel comes pre-installed on the flip-flop rear hub
front and rear hubs have sealed bearings and are laced to robust 30mm Deep V Push rims
and the bike comes with a front brake and lever installed
so it easily plugs and plays into street riding scenarios
The test was done at the VELO Sports Center
a 250m indoor velodrome (the first permanent indoor track in the US) with a maximum banking of 45 degrees and a surface of Siberian Pine
The surface has a reputation for being slippery
Aventon supplied a sponsored sparring partner
the fabulous and very fast Kym “Nonstop” Perfetto (alley cat/fixie crit/velodrome track athlete
movie/reality tv star) along with the bike and venue
and pacelines over the course of a few hours
The proprietary Aventon seatpost developed for the Mataro features an angularly indexing head to lock the saddle angle
The back of the post has reference lines to help quickly set saddle height when building the bike from a travel case
The Push branded short and shallow bars drop bars were comfortable and completely appropriate for racing
Handled quickly but not unexpectedly – I could pick any line I wanted to on the banks
it felt like a much more expensive bicycle
There were two things that challenged me about the actual ride of the bike
the robust wheelset that would be fine getting around on the street feels sluggish in accelerating on the track (if my scales are to be believed
the wheelset with the freewheel installed are upwards of 3.4kg stock)
Carson is a notoriously slippery track – and the Kenda Kriterium 25mm tires
felt a little cheesy on the wooden surface
It makes sense – the Kriteriums are a fine street tire
with built in puncture and wear resistance
At a time when track and fixie crits are experiencing a surge in popularity
you can have a complete bike – one that you can race or ride on the street basically out of the box
but that has a nice enough frameset and cockpit platform that it can be piecemeal upgraded to grow with newer athletes as they gear up
While it’s an easy investment for athletes looking to invest in a first race bike
it’s a respectable performance option for more established athletes as well
it’d be a top notch track or fixie crit machine
as it is already demonstrating on the course
I’ve already recommended it as my current favorite first new track bike to new riders coming through my velodrome

Did JW’s family biz have to tool up for bike manufacturing from scratch or did they have prior experience in that
or do they also make many of the components
It’s pretty impressive as most new companies selling in this price range will just private label another frame
Not a bad way to go if you pick a good vendor
but to tool up for bikes from scratch and nail it so quickly like these guys seem to have done is seriously impressive

There is a dollmaker shop in Tokyo’s Naka Okachimachi neighborhood specializing in dolls that serve as charms for the good health of young boys and girls
they delight their customers with something a little bit different — in tune with the festive end-of-year mood
Perhaps one of the most natural instincts in the world is to protect
and pray for your children’s growth and good health
So it’s not surprising that Japan has several festivities that celebrate children’s health
The two main festivities of this kind are the Hina Matsuri on March 3
The traditions of the Hina Matsuri are said to go back more than 1,000 years
families all over Japan take out a beautiful doll set
The sets often illustrate Heian court ladies
and they are said to protect the house from evil spirits
along with the flying carp decorations we are so used to seeing
families traditionally display an elaborate decorative mini armor helmet
which works as a charm for the good health of boys in the household
The Mataro family has more than 100 years of history as dollmakers
It is now reaching the third generation of craftsmen
and the family has its own unique take on the dolls’ expressions
and a market which could potentially get smaller in the future
there have been questions about how to keep the tradition alive
the new generation is keeping in step with the times
Mataro Ningyo unveiled 2019’s dolls of the year
picking up significant events from the news that most captured Japan
one can spot the VIPs who stole Japan’s heart in 2019
such as Emperor Naruhito and his wife Empress Masako
These dolls were made to commemorate the start of the Reiwa Era and the ascension of the new Emperor.
There are also likenesses of the infectiously cheerful Akira Yoshino
the Nobel Laureate for Chemistry who collaborated on the invention of the now- ubiquitous lithium-ion battery.
there is a doll set featuring the “smiling Cinderella,” Hinako Shibuno
and the basketball wonderkid Ryu Hachimura
one can find the much-adored Japanese national Rugby team captain Michael Leitch.
there were a couple of decorations which reflected on some of the trends of 2019
including the invasion of tapioca bubble tea
and the commercial buzzword “cashless payment.”
The minutely-crafted dolls make for a nostalgic reflection on what 2019 has been for Japan. The dolls will be available for viewing by the general public from January 4 to March 3, 2020, at the Naka Okachimachi branch of Mataro Ningyo
The address is here
make sure to stop by and wonder at the figures of 2019.

A key member of one of Russia’s top professional water polo clubs has been given a 2 year suspension after failing a doping test in November
El sorteo de ambos torneos se celebrará el 7 de mayo a las 17:00 CET en la sede provisional de World Aquatics en Budapest
Seven teams have been placed in the bracket; the remaining two teams will compete for the last berth in the bracket via an opening-round game
Boasting its highest-powered offense in program history
the Trojans take a 27-4 overall record into the 2025 NCAA Tournament in Indianapolis
The Bears will open up against fourth-seeded Hawai’i in the tournament scheduled for May 9-11 at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis
April 18th, 2021 International/National Team Water Polo, Water Polo
Though Kinef Kirishi targeted the Euro League title as usual
but after failing to reach that Final Four its European campaign still ended on a high note as the Russian super team won the LEN Trophy
It’s the first ever for them in this competition
a fine addition to their EL victories from 2017 and 2018
LEN Trophy Final: CN Mataro Goufone (ESP) v Kinef Surgutneftegas Kirishi (RUS) 8-10
Bronze medal match: Lifebrain SIS Roma (ITA) v Astralpool- Sabadell (ESP) 5-11
Two three-goal surges from Kirishi proved to be decisive in the final
though Mataro fought bravely to keep the Russians under pressure but did not have a real chance to cause an upset
The Spaniards stunned the Russians in the opening period as they managed to shut them out for the entire eight minutes
Kirishi needed 10:26 minutes to start scoring but once they settled in the final they netted three in a span of 2:42 minutes to go 2-4 up from 2-1
this time the three goals flushed in within 100 seconds to give the Russians a 3-7 lead
two goals in the last 40 seconds in the third gave them some hope and indeed they could reduce the gap to a single goal at 7-8
earned 6 on 5s in the next possessions on both occasions and put them away
When Bella Markoch found the back of the net 54 seconds from time for 8-10
it was inevitably the winning touch: Kirishi could clinch its third European title in five years
Credits go to Mataro as they could force a much tighter contest than Sabadell had done in the semis
despite the fellow Spanish club had been considered a bigger threat to Kirishi
Sabadell got some consolation in the bronze medal match
“Now is hard to understand and accept that we had an incredible match
We show a good water polo and in this match the defense was the key
We finished this European trip by completing a good job and now we would like to focus on the job our club is doing for us and for water polo.”
“The match was very exciting and we are very satisfied because this is a very prestigious tournament
We are very happy to return to Russia with this trophy
so we will play for the European Super Cup
I would like to add that this is our first Len Trophy
We wanted to play a good match to finish with a big victory against a great team in a European competition
despite we would have liked to reach the final
Yesterday we didn’t play a great match and Kirishi overcame us
We wanted to win this bronze to finish the European competitions with good feelings
but from tomorrow we have to focus on the national league.”
“This match was better than the one yesterday
Our players were a little bit sad and tired
and though I expected to see a more powerful performance
I still want to recognise the soul and the attitude they showed during every minute of the game
We will come back to the European competition and our next campaign is going to be better!”

sweet home for Astralpool Sabadell – they hosted the Champions League Women Final Four for the fifth time and triumphed once again
thanks to a hard-fought 9-8 win over fellow Spanish side Mataro
The first-ever all-Spanish final was played in an electrifying atmosphere in front of packed tribunes – Sabadell now are only two victories away to catch up Orizzonte on the all-time ranks
The Italians claimed the bronze medal by beating Dunaujvaros with ease
Final: CN Assolim Mataro (ESP) v Astralpool Sabadell (ESP) 8-9
Bronze medal match: Dunaujvaros VC (HUN) v Ekipe Orizzonte (ITA) 8-12
It was Sabadell’s turn and the host side beat fellow Spanish club Mataro in perhaps the most important match of the season to win the Champions League title for the 6th time in 12 years
but Sabadell bettered them for the Spanish Cup and now
For a while it looked like that Sabadell would win the game with exceptional ease – with three action goals from the perimeter in a span of 94 seconds
they jumped to a 2-5 lead by halftime and led by four goals twice in the third
missed all their seven woman-ups in the first three periods
but they made an all-in in the fourth and cut their deficit to a single goal
they had three minutes to score the equaliser
Mataro had one last fine chance in their final possession
but Laura Ester managed to save Vivian Sevenich’s backhander with 0:28 on the clock
The final was played in front of packed stands
volume levels reached sky high as the fans loudly cheered during the first-ever all-Spanish final in the competition’s history
the locals were the happier if not the happiest as they could celebrate their 6th victory
so Sabadell kept their perfect home record for the Final Fours
the players of Mataro were utterly disappointed – they won all previous matches in the Champions League this season
Sabadell is now just two victories away from catching up Orizzonte
the Italians beat Dunaujvaros 12-8 with ease
they stormed to a 5-1 lead and never looked back
This was their third bronze medal upon their last three F4 participations
Since there are only 40km between the two cities
both are located in the agglomeration around Barcelona
and the fans were incredibly noisy right from the beginning
each possession generated some reaction to ensure an electrifying atmosphere in the pool
Anni Espar opened the scoring for Mataro with a fine action shot
and their lead could have been doubled easily after a turnover foul
but they were unable to put the ball away despite arriving back in a two on one and having two shots within seconds (Ester came up big at the first)
Maggie Steffens’ blast from the perimeter blown up the right side of the tribune
but Sabrina van der Sloot was denied twice in back-to-back woman-ups
quite unusual series from the classy Dutch leftie
Mataro had a 6 on 5 in the last 18 seconds but bad passes ruined their chance
Matilde Ortiz broke the ice with a fine lob from the left wing
then Ester stopped Cristina Nogue’s close range shot in a woman-down
then after a blocked action shot Rita Keszthelyi could gain some advantage and finished off the counter for 2-2
Judith Forca let the ball fly from the perimeter
42 seconds later van der Sloot finally found the back of the net
and in another 52 seconds Forca hit another one for 2-5
missed a 6 on 5 in the process while conceding three action goals from the distance in 1:34 minutes
Ester had a hand on two attempts in another woman-down inside the last minute
so Sabadell seemed to be on their way to another home triumph
Forca’s lob-like shot expanded the gap to four
though Simone van der Kraats pulled one back immediately
it was Sabadell all the way – despite a denied man-down
Mataro was unable to penetrate the hosts’ defence and None Perez reset the four-goal gap from a two-on-one counter at 3-7
coach Dani Ballart called for a time-out to re-organise the team’s offence
Clara Cambray finished off a counter to give Mataro’s fans something to cheer
had another extra but couldn’t reduce the gap to two as they could only hit the woodwork (were 0 for 7 at this stage)
Sabadell went for a 15sec possession after a time-out
they kept their three-goal advantage (4-7) with eight minutes to go
a quite promising partial result in a final
Keszthelyi’s brilliant 6m lob finally cut Mataro’s deficit to two 26 seconds into the fourth
but Maica Garcia came up with one of her usual magics
a fantastic backhander from the centre for 5-8
Cambray put away the ball from another counter and after a blocked shot Mataro gained a 6 on 5
and even though only from the second attempt
but Elena Ruiz hit back with a distant shot (the goalie wasn’t praised from the bench)
and the roof was to come down as the fans were shouting wildly all over the place
Though Mataro missed their next extra as well but kept the ball and van der Kraats sent it to the net from the perimeter for 8-9
A turnover foul denied Mataro’s next chance to equalise
but couldn’t do much in their next possession
Vivian Sevenich finally got the ball in the centre – she didn’t see it many times in the game –
the Dutch managed to make a backhanded shot
and that was it since only 27 seconds remained
Sabadell kept the ball and started the celebrations
as one might add – it was the fifth time they hosted a Final Four and their fifth win after 2011
Now they are trailing only by two behind Orizzonte on the all-time ranks
Scoring four in less than four minutes set the tone
then added two from woman-ups so this time they went 1-4 ahead
Then early in the second they were already 1-6 up
when Dunaujvaros kind of arrived at the game and pulled back two for 3-6
Orizzonte didn’t lay back and soon they led by five again
before Krisztina Garda netted her fourth just seconds before the middle break for 5-9
especially the Italian as they killed five woman-downs in a row
The Magyars also held on for a while in the back
but in the last minutes Orizzonte managed to put away a 6 on 5
within 49 seconds – Valeria Palmieri and Veronica Gant both had an easy task after the fine set-ups
even though there were eight more minutes to play
Since there were a couple of heated scenes and duels
the refs invited the team captains for a small-talk to have a calmer finish
especially with not too much left at stake
The Hungarians could pull back three towards the end
something they might have expected beforehand
while Orizzonte bounced back from the disappointing semi-final defeat and claimed the bronze
just like at their previous two appearances in 2014 and 2018

The first train on the railway line from Barcelona to Mataró set off on 28 October 1848
from a station located right next to the Estació de França
Thousands of people turned out that day to see the train set off amid shouts hailing the new form of transport
carrying all the local and state officials
This Mataró industrialist promoted the creation of the railway line upon his return from Cuba
where he had been amazed by the train line between Havanna and Güines
he passed away a few months before his great dream became a reality
Biada noted all the details of the trains on the line in Cuba
He moved to London with the aim of finding funding and engineers to make the Barcelona-Mataró line possible
Josep Maria Roca i Cabanes acted as a mediator for him to attract foreign investment
they prepared the rail project to ask the Spanish state for the concession
They applied for it in June 1843 and embarked on a long and costly path to turn the arrival of the train into a reality
They overcame scepticism about the means of transport
protests over the forced expropriation of land which the line would run through and a whole series of boycotts during the work
work on the line began in the summer of 1847 while the first four locomotives were being produced in England with the names Mataró
along with 30 goods wagons and 62 passenger carriages
When the line was built and all the mobile units had arrived from Great Britain
the date for the grand inauguration was set as 28 October 1848
the first train line in mainland Spain was inaugurated after two years of works and it was the beginning of a rapid expansion of the rail network
The route was a 30-kilometre journey between Barcelona and Mataró
nicknamed La Mataró for the line's ultimate destination
These types of trains were designed and built at the Crewe Works factory
The idea for the train line was conceived by local Mataró sea merchant
Impressed by the train line he helped fund in 1837 in Cuba
Biada vowed to connect his home town with Barcelona
Biada returned to Spain in 1840 and got to work on the rail project
he applied for permission from the Spanish government
Biada then attracted some 100 shareholders from Barcelona
Cuba and Puerto Rico before going on to establish a company to take on the rest of the project
But Biada would fall ill and die at the start of 1848
the Barcelona-Mataró line would help usher in a wave of enthusiasm for trains
as different rail projects began to flourish across the country
the Spanish government established the General Railways Law
as it promoted the development of a national rail network
which was believed to be key to Spain's economic growth and future modernisation
The law made it easier to secure foreign investment that was needed to finance the network
as well as establish full technical guidelines
such as its radial structure and track gauge
Spain's train lines grew from 459km in 1857 to over 5,000km in 1866

the regional minister for the presidency of the Generalitat de Catalunya
officially opened the Mataró Marina Barcelona for business and inaugurated it into the Barcelona Nautical Cluster
The minister’s sentiments focussed largely on how the opening of the marina will place Mataró
as “a reference for the sector in Catalonia,” adding that the marina is able to “boost economic activity in the area and create new jobs”
a shipyard located in the mouth of the Arenys de Mar port around 40km from Barcelona and the owning company of Mataró Marina Barcelona
“The economic success of the marina is the economic success of the city
the region and the country,” he said
In a circular released by the Barcelona Nautical Cluster at the close of 2015
the organisation outlined the positive economic impact that a burgeoning Catalonian superyacht industry could have on the Barcelonan region
will be adding around 160 new superyacht berths
this includes the expansion of OneOcean Port Vell and the creation of Marina Vela
“With only 5 per cent of the world traffic of these yacht the 300 berths are filled
which would representent a huge economic impact for the city,” explained Toni Tió
president of the Barcelona Nautical Cluster
the cost could be more that €210 million a year
while the impact on ports would be about €70 million.”
In addition to the larger developments on going in Barcelona
Mataró Marina Barcelona has 30 berths of its own
as well as other options for larger yachts
as well as the myriad other conveniences one would expect from a superyacht marina
Mataró benefits from its proximity to Barcelona (16nm/15mil)

was an achievement for its time and would not have been possible without the impetus of the Mataró industrialist Miquel Biada
Mataró commemorated the 175th anniversary of this historic railway journey with a series of events that honored the crucial role played by the train in the industrial and demographic development of the city and the entire Maresme region
Prominent personalities traveled on the train
including the Secretary of State for Transport
the Minister of Territory of the Generalitat
the President of the Diputació de Barcelona
received the retinue at the station and went to the monument of Miquel Biada
a tribute to the promoter of the construction of the railway line
where institutional speeches were made in front of the replica of the locomotive ‘La Mataró’
a unique piece that was transferred from the Museu del Ferrocarril de Catalunya in Vilanova i la Geltrú for the occasion
The anniversary also included a drone show that relived the history of the arrival of the railroad
A total of 175 drones filled the sky of Mataró
representing iconic images such as the train station
‘La Mataró’ and Laia la Arquera
accompanied by characteristic sounds of the train world and Cuban rhythms
This anniversary commemorates a historic milestone for the region
The first train that ran on this line was a revolution in its time
Thousands of people gathered to witness the inaugural trip and cheered effusively for this new means of transportation that would change life in the region
Although industrialist Miquel Biada was a key promoter of the line
he sadly passed away before he was able to witness the realization of his dream
The idea of the Barcelona-Mataró railway line arose when Biada was in Cuba and was amazed by the railway system linking Havana and Güines
Taking detailed notes on the British trains used in Cuba
Biada traveled to London in search of funding and experts to carry out his vision

Barcelona
On this getaway to Maresme you'll explore two of the region’s most lively and dynamic towns
the regional capital and Catalonia’s eighth-largest city in terms of population
with plenty of cultural and commercial attractions
which is marked by the legacy of the 'Indians' who went to America to seek their fortune
and by the verses dedicated to it by the poet Salvador Espriu
Your getaway gets underway in Arenys de Mar
set off to seek their fortune in the 18th and 19th centuries
Many of them did indeed manage to make that fortune and
The walking route we suggest begins at the upper end of the famous 'riera' (dry river bed prone to flash floods) of Arenys
and goes from one side of this main avenue to the other so you can see different buildings
Perhaps the most famous of Arenys' Indianos was Josep Xifré
who donated a hospital for the needy to his home town
It's a large building and contains his mausoleum
You should also look out for the Torrent Asylum
the El Paraiso palace and Can Còrdova
You should also visit the Sinera cemetery on a hilltop overlooking the town
which was immortalised in the verses of Salvador Espriu
Many of the cemetery’s magnificent pantheons are the last resting places of the town’s Indianos
At weekends in July and August you can also take a cruise along the nearby coast on a motor launch
These are great ways to get closer to the water
and to the maritime traditions of Arenys de Mar

is getting more pet friendly as a dozen beaches are now open to dogs
This new policy is helping to attract more visitors who want to spend their summer vacation with their canine friends
a tourist from Italy who is staying at a campsite in Mataró
She discovered the Mataró beach through a website that indicated all the pet friendly beaches: "I really like the beach
there is nothing like this in Italy," Laigonela said
Dogs are also increasingly welcome in other spaces such as restaurants
and mountain routes as long as petowners are responsible and considerate of their surroundings.
"Having dogs on beaches is better in order to keep them clean
because us owners are always taking care that it is safe and there are no plastics or rubbish that the dogs may eat."
some Mataró locals argue that the beach is too small and it gets crowded easily - the city is home to more than 16,000 registered dogs
I think that the Sant Simó beach on the other edge could also be opened for dogs," Patrícia Beleda
a Maresme resident told Catalan News Agency (ACN)
This summer there are 37 dog-friendly beaches across Catalonia's twelve coastal counties.

The growing concern about insecurity has led Patrulla Vecinal Mataró to call for a demonstration on Tuesday
The chosen slogan is "Today It's Cerdanyola
The organizers encourage residents to "join and raise their voices" against the deterioration of coexistence and the lack of institutional response:
The mobilization comes after a series of disturbances that have shaken the Cerdanyola neighborhood in recent weeks
