Coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) have been around since the 1960s
In most precision manufacturing facilities
the CMM is the company’s chief dimensional measurement device that is traceable to the standards maintained by the national standards authority of the relevant country
Most CMMs are used to verify dimensional accuracy for quality control (QC) and first-article inspection
the function of checking the first part produced by a manufacturing process to verify that it is meeting tolerance requirements
Inspection with a CMM provides data for in-process measurements to ensure dimensional integrity from operation to operation and to satisfy traceability requirements
CMMs are also used to perform gage repeatability and reproducibility (R&R) studies
reverse engineering and a host of other tasks
the global installed base of CMMs is over 150 000 units
While there has been much speculation that CMMs are becoming obsolete
CMMs are more versatile and functional than ever before
Walter Meano Engineering has installed an Aberlink Axiom CMM
The machine has been supplied by Caldeaz Manufacturing Technologies
The Axiom CMM has a bed size of 600mm by 900mm and a component with a height of 500mm and a weight of up to 300kg can be measured as a standard
“Companies need advanced measurement solutions that enable them to guarantee the reliability of key processes such as validating the quality of manufactured parts and obtaining data for analysis and critical decision making
manufacturers usually employ quality control equipment such as a Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) that is high technological value equipment designed to calculate the geometric characteristics of an object,” said Detlev Börner
Managing Director of Walter Meano Engineering
Walter Meano Engineering (WME) supplies CNC machined components to the mining equipment
automotive and defence industries and is the manufacturer and distributor of the VersaFlo range of pumps
The VersaFlo VSE vertical spindle pump range was developed using over 40 years of experience gained with the Pompie and VPM air driven pumps and the VPM electric vertical spindle pump
the company has 23 Okuma CNC milling and turning machines
an Okuma CNC grinder and a Feranti 3D CNC coordinate measuring machine at its disposal
SolidWorks Flow and Mastercam machining software
WME can manufacture to specific customer needs
“After investing heavily in enhancing our machining capabilities
our Aberlink CNC CMM will allow our busy inspection department to keep pace with increased throughput and to inspect our high-accuracy parts to the required levels of precision
the Aberlink’s ability to generate in-depth inspection reports and documentation will help us with our traceability records,” continued Börner
Walter Meano Engineering is the manufacturer and distributor of the VersaFlo range of pumps
“Another factor is the easy-to-use Aberlink software and the fact that there is no maintenance on the software
updates get supplied as it is developed by the Aberlink Engineering team
While you measure a part the programme gets written as you go along or you can also programme the machine offline from another computer.”
“The Axiom CMM has a bed size of 600mm by 900mm and a component with a height of 500mm and a weight of up to 300kg can be measured as a standard
If you are measuring smaller components the fixtures allow you to simultaneously measure up to 60 components with the same repeatability
The Axiom can be used with touch trigger probe
continuous contact scanning probe or with Aberlink’s revolutionary non-contact camera system.”
“The machine has been supplied by Caldeaz Manufacturing Technologies.”
Walter Meano Engineering supplies CNC machined components to the mining equipment
“Precise temperature control can be maintained with cooling systems for lower temperature requirements and humidity can be regulated
“We are now confident that our machines can machine with positional accuracies of +/-0.5 micron
which enables us to meet the requirements of clients with high-tolerance components.”
CMMs have long been the source of bottlenecks and frustration on the manufacturing floor
waiting for the inspection results from the QC lab prior to the production
It’s not hard to understand why many production managers would like to see CMMs taken out of the QC lab and put onto the manufacturing floor.”

Not long after Krista DiResta ’21 finished exams, celebrated graduation, packed her belongings and left Binghamton, she started work as an analyst in the investment banking division at Royal Bank of Canada. Wanting to help other students build skills and confidence, and graduate with a job, she volunteered with the School of Management’s Women in Finance Development Program
The educational mentorship program was formed to teach first- and second-year female students about financial skills and concepts
By pairing talented first-year students and sophomores with mentors who are juniors
seniors or alumni — and teaching Bloomberg Terminal and analytical skills — the goal is to make the mentees more competitive when seeking internships and jobs
“I joined the program as a mentor the first semester it was created,” says DiResta
“I was so happy that the founders [Rachel Parsons ’20 and Jessica Meano ’20] initiated this effort
I recognized this would be a huge asset to me as a new student
and I was so excited to guide women in their career journey
“The most beneficial aspect of being president has been the ability to give back to the community that has guided me so far,” DiResta continues
“I’ve had several mentors at Binghamton who made me who I am today
Mentees find that Women in Finance offers more than the ability to form meaningful
Opportunities abound for networking within the group
“The most beneficial aspect of being involved in the program is the network you create,” says Hannah Kozlenko
who joined during the spring semester of her first year in SOM
“I feel as if I’m able to contact any upperclass students or alumni because the program gave me the opportunity to reach out to those in fields that I’m interested in
I’ve built a network with students in my own class and met women with similar interests as mine
The network and professional development have allowed me
to have connections at firms and within the school
As was the case with almost every other activity at Binghamton University
the COVID-19 pandemic forced the group to shift from in-person to virtual
Although the method of interacting had to change temporarily
the quality of the content and connections didn’t
but nothing beats the experience of being together in person
and we can’t wait until everyone can be back in the room together,” DiResta says
The pandemic didn’t keep Kozlenko from making the most of the experience
won the Fall 2020 Finance Society’s M&A Case Competition and joined the Women in Finance executive board
She credits the group for helping her obtain a summer internship at Morgan Stanley
“I was looking for a program where I felt I could really grow and be given the guidance I needed,” says Kozlenko
who wants to be an investment banking analyst after graduation
who is now one of my friends and someone I trust
She and the rest of the board helped me figure out what I wanted to pursue and gave me the resources I needed to learn how to succeed in front-office finance,” Kozlenko adds
“Joining the program was the best decision and that’s why I’m grateful to have the opportunity to help current and future mentees.”

Hot spots and then full flames were still popping up at the homes in the 300 block of West Garrison Street
an hour after the blaze was called in at 4 p.m
Bethlehem fire Chief Robert Novatnack said he expected crews to remain on site through the night because of hot spots
particularly stubborn ones in the homes' attics
A firefighter on the homes' shared roof cut vent holes with a chainsaw
and thick smoke periodically engulfed the block
Crews had spotlights out as the sun went down
Novatnack confirmed one firefighter suffered a leg injury
The residents at home at the time all got out OK; one was treated for breathing problems at the scene
The fire chief said when crews arrived the back porches were engulfed
with flames moving up the sides of the buildings and into the attics
while a neighboring home a few feet away sustained only slight water damage
That block of Garrison Street was shut down
between West North Street and Union Boulevard
was closed as firetrucks and ambulances filled both lanes
A man that neighbors identified as Vincent Del Re
was yelling at people taking pictures of the fire as crews diligently worked to knock the blaze down
A neighbor uses a garden hose to spray water near a fire in the 300 block of Garrison Street in Bethlehem that spread to three row homes on March 10
Del Re said he was sleeping when the fire broke out
Neighbors said Del Re's grandson got him out of the home
whose Third Avenue home backs up to the homes
was coming home from work as the fire spread
"I pulled up and just saw the fire in my backyard," he said
Reuber walked through his house and looked out the window
only to see flames engulfing Del Re's house
Those flames were creeping into Rueber's yard and on the trees
Reuber and neighbor Max Meano grabbed garden hoses and were spraying their backyards
as crews with fire hoses doused the back porches of the row homes
"I got right into fighting mode," Reuber said

Meano was standing out front when he saw the firetrucks going onto West Garrison Street
and someone driving by said they could see the fire
"The fence was lit up," said Meano
who is in a walking boot due to a broken foot
Murals that Meano's been painting were in the backyard
and he was wetting everything down to protect them

The legislative power aproved Victor Meano's project for a new National Congress building in 1895. The building was inaugurated in 1906 but it wasn't finished until 1946.
In front of the building is the Plaza de los Dos Congresos named after a monument in its centre which recalls the Assembly of 1813 and the Congress of 1816 - historic moments in Argentina's history, marking milestones including the freedom of wombs, the national shield, flag and anthem and the abolition of titles of nobility. The female figure depicted stepping on a serpent represents the Republic. The monument was inaugurated in 1914.
The first person to step out on to the central balcony was Julio A. Roca (president in 1880-1886 and 1898-1904), who made the gesture a tradition for the presidents that followed him. In 1886 the building was connected to the neighbouring central post office building by means of the central arch, which was designed by architect Francisco Tamburini, giving the building the structure it maintains to this day. The newly complete building was officially inaugurated in 1898.
Buenos Aires City has the same hierarchy as each of Argentina’s provinces, and has its own legislative power. The first stone was laid was by the then president Marcelo T. Alvear of the Radical Party in 1926 and the building was finally inaugurated in 1931, at a time that the legislature was not sitting because of a military dictatorship at the time. Later, during the presidency of Juan Domingo Perón the building was used as the Secretary of Work.
Relaxing in this pleasant city park today it’s perhaps hard to imagine the many bloody events that took part on the site when it was the location of Argentina’s national penitentiary. Italian anarchist Severino Di Giovanni received his death sentence here in 1931, owing to martial law imposed in 1930, and General Juan José Valle was executed here by the dictatorship in 1955, along with other military officers and civilians. The site today is a long way from these bloody episodes.
University of Livingstonia (Unilia) has sent on forced leave its Vice Chancellor , Prof Yohane Nyasulu following a strike by academic and non-academic workers demanding a 60 percent pay hike and better working conditions.
Management of the university, owned by CCAP Synod of Livingstonia, has also suspended Unversity Registrat Peter Kayira and Director of Finance Francis Kumwenda.
The university ordered students to vacate Ekwendeni and Robert Laws campuses in Mzimba after staff staff downed tools demanding higher perks and dismissal of vice-chancellor, registrar and finance officer.
The staff are accusing the institution’s top management of failing to protect their welfare, govern the university by agreed systems and procedures as well as cultivate a mutually-respectful professional relationship with them.
The synod’s general secretary the Reverend Levi Nyondo and moderator the Reverend John Gondwe confirmed the suspension .
However, Gondwe said it is not forced leave but an administrative leave.
“Much as we do not see the necessity to fire them as demanded by members of staff, we have deemed it important to investigate the allegations,” he said.
Unilia was established by the Synod of Livingstonia on August 23 2003.
