The economy of Miajadas relies heavily on the cultivation and processing of tomatoes
Residents are so proud of their cash crop that they decided pay tribute by building a giant tomato along the highway
Miajadas is a little town located in central Cáceres
a province in the autonomous community of Extremadura in Spain
the Miajadas city council commissioned the large tomato sculpture
artist Miguel Ángel Martín Gallardo curved a fiberglass exterior around steel ribs
The tomato is 18 feet (5.5 meters) in diameter and sits atop a base that holds it 40 feet (12 meters) high
So that it could be seen well by all the drivers on the A-5 highway
it was installed on the side of a roundabout on the highway in 1999

To continue promoting the use of renewable energy and achieve zero net greenhouse gas emissions with its Spanish factories by 2050, Nestle has partnered with POWEN to launch its third photovoltaic (PV) solar park at the Nestle AQUAREL water bottling plant in Herrera del Duque
is comprised of more than 2,100 solar panels with a total power of more than 1,100 kW
The power produced from the solar park will be used to power the factory’s operations – generating nearly 20% of the factory’s current electrical consumption
this new PV solar park will help Nestle avoid the emissions of more than 4,100 tons of carbon dioxide per year
“With this new facility, Nestle continues to support renewable energy in its factories while moving towards the decarbonization of its economic activity,” said Jordi Aycart
This new installation joins a network of two other solar parks – one at the Nestle Solis tomato sauce factory in Miajadas and one located at the Nestle roasted coffee factory in Reus – providing more than 30% of the annual electricity used by these facilities

ACCIONA and ACCIONA Energía have carried out an innovation pilot project to reuse biomass slag in the construction works of the A-68 Arrúbal – Navarrete highway
The road works are being carried out by ACCIONA’s Construction business
commissioned by the Ministry of Transportation
and the pilot was led by ACCIONA Energía’s Innovation department
The pilot has reused 1,500 tonnes of biomass slag –a common term to refer to boiler bottom ash– generated during the combustion process to produce renewable electricity at the Sangüesa biomass plant to replace natural excavated soil
The road section included a subbase of high-quality selected soil and a base of graded aggregates with a simple surface dressing on top
Biomass slag has successfully replaced selected soil of the subbase
providing a high bearing capacity and rigidity to the road
complying with all technical requirements that rules road construction in Spain
The pilot includes an environmental monitoring plan
This project follows preliminary pilots carried out to build access roads at the Celada Fusión wind farm
where ACCIONA Energía reused 352 tonnes of slag from the Briviesca biomass plant
where it reused 966 tonnes of slag from the Miajadas plant itself
These projects tested the load-bearing and self-cementing capacities of biomass slag and demonstrated its good mechanical and environmental performance
The reuse of biomass slag contributes to the goal of ACCIONA and ACCIONA Energía to provide a second life to the waste and by-products derived from its activity
while promoting circular economy and reducing CO2 emissions from the construction process in an outstanding example of industrial symbiosis among its businesses
All ACCIONA Energía's biomass plants have the Bureau Veritas certification "Zero Waste Management (Minimization of waste to landfill)"
which promotes committed and appropriate management of waste to avoid landfill
