Saturday will be the last time Gastón Mieres plays for Uruguay
Mieres will hang up his boots after a lengthily test career for his country
Mieres will earn his 86th cap for Los Teros in Saturday’s test match against Romania in Bucharest
Retirement comes for the Teros winger / fullback at the age of 35
Mieres has been through the thick and thin for Uruguay
For a decade and a half he has been involved in representing his country
Mieres made his test debut in 2010 against Brazil
The year 2010 was critical to Uruguayan rugby
The loss against Romania in repechage ended their World Cup dream
The URU responded by taking-action to rebuild rugby and get back to the World Cup
Uruguay debuted at Rugby World Cup 1999 with a win over Spain. Four years later Los Teros defeated Georgia in Australia 2003
What appeared to be a successful structure proved otherwise; however
as Portugal eliminated Uruguay at the final hurdle for Rugby World Cup 2007 and Romania did the same for Rugby World Cup 2011
Mieres’ test debut came with the realization that change was essential
Los Teros earned a spot at Rugby World Cup 2015
The prize was the pool of death against Australia
Uruguay even had the task of facing Wales in Wales and England in England
Mieres ranked as third for off-loads in the tournament with seven
A mature Uruguay was back for Rugby World Cup 2023. Los Teros pushed both France and Italy in their pool matches before claiming a win over Namibia
The tournament concluded for Uruguay with a defeat against New Zealand
Mieres took on the best teams in the world in three Rugby World Cups
It was a highly noteworthy career for the player who began playing rugby as a young boy in his home town of Punta del Este
Mieres played for Rugby Club Valpolicella in Italy’s Serie A

Deltona has participated in plenty of big games the last few years
Mieres even scored a run in the championship game
She wanted to be in that crucial position Tuesday

Jennifer Mieres grew up in Trinidad in the West Indies with two mantras for living
Her parents taught her the first one: "See yourself as a citizen of the world."
The second was inspired by her grandmother: "Don't just be an observer — make a difference."
especially after her grandfather died of a heart attack when she was 7
"I was very attached to my beloved grandfather
and his death had a profound effect on my interest in science and medicine," she said
storyteller and an internationally known advocate for women's heart health and diversity in health care
As an American Heart Association dedicated volunteer for more than 20 years
Mieres is a national spokesperson for Go Red for Women
has served on the national Board of Directors and a wide variety of committees
and authored several AHA scientific publications
For her exemplary efforts, Mieres will be honored as the 2022 Physician of the Year during the AHA's annual National Volunteer Awards virtual ceremony
Mieres leads Northwell Health's Center for Equity of Care in New York
She's also Northwell's first chief diversity and inclusion officer
focusing on creating equitable health for all
"I'm really trying to be a contributor in the redesign of health care so as to integrate the components of culture
race and ethnicity into how we deliver health care," she said
"But my ultimate goal is to have all people realize that their heart and their health are their most important assets."
a former AHA president who was her mentor in medical school at Boston University
"Alice cemented my plan to become a cardiologist," Mieres said
she was making a difference and doing it with such grace and such passion
I really looked up to her as a great role model."
as Mieres was searching for new ways to spread the message of heart health to women and ethnic groups
she met a patient who was a documentary film producer
As the woman spoke about TV's power to cut across socioeconomic boundaries and educate everyone
in partnership with her Northwell colleagues at the Katz Institute for Women's Health
Mieres has co-produced four documentaries on health
including the Emmy-nominated PBS film "A Woman's Heart"
including "Heart Smart for Black Women and Latinas" and the newly updated "Heart Smarter for Women: Six Weeks to a Healthier Heart"
"I want to use storytelling to make scientific information more user-friendly and translatable into actionable steps
"Eighty percent of heart disease is preventable
like the all-or-nothing myth that you have to join a gym and exercise every day
And I think women struggle more than men with risk markers like stress and sleep
"need to put ourselves first and recognize that even 10 minutes of exercise/activity a day helps
We need to demystify what it means to be heart healthy and realize that small changes can translate into big gains."
Mieres tracks her health with a wearable device that reminds her when she's not moving her body enough
She said she sometimes struggles with getting enough sleep
but she feels better since she started using a 10-minute guided meditation app every day
"Whether it's breathing or stress reduction or self-forgiveness
it definitely lifts my mood and sets the table for the day," she said
Mieres said she's optimistic about the future of health care and women's heart health in particular
"Having traveled across the country as a spokesperson for the AHA
listening to groups of women tell their stories
I'm struck by how much women encourage each other in good times and bad," she said
"As they share their journey to heart-healthy living
I think more women will join in and translate this knowledge and it won't seem so daunting
"If we can harness the power of these partnerships
all of us in health care can propel a new movement and conquer heart disease in women

Rubén Viejo works in the San Nicolás mine in Mieres
It is the country’s last working coal mine
Photographs by Lys Arango Story by Kyle Almond
Rubén Viejo remembers home being much different when the coal industry dominated the Spanish region of Asturias
there was a lot of life in these towns: kids everywhere
who is in charge of security at the San Nicolás mine in Mieres
“Mieres nights were mythical: You knew what time you started
but never at what time you would return home.”
And San Nicolás is the last working coal mine in all of Spain
Spain’s coal industry powered more than homes and businesses
the industry employed 100,000 people in the country
has produced much of the country’s coal over the years
“My father used to tell me many stories about this region because he grew up in the mining basin,” said photographer Lys Arango
who has been documenting this end of an era
“My grandparents settled there during the ’50s when the coal industry was very important and there were many opportunities.”
As Arango found out during her many trips between 2020 and 2022
much has changed since the coal industry’s 20th-century heyday
“Because there is less and less coal going out
But also there is less population,” she said
Her photos focus on the decline of the various mining towns and the stories of the miners — past and present — who still call the region home
“Despite the accidents and the fact that everything was black
a lot of people,” remembers José Manuel Lamelas
“Working conditions improved a lot and with it
But we could not stop the closure of mines and the consequent depopulation.”
Spain has been moving away from coal and investing in green energy
its government reached a deal with mining unions that has been called the Just Transition
This agreement would allow for miners as young as 48 to claim early retirement
Younger workers would be retrained for clean-energy jobs
And a fund of 250 million euros would be invested in mining communities over 10 years
“Our aim has been to leave no one behind,” said Teresa Ribera
Spain’s minister for ecological transition
The deal was hailed by many as a model agreement
“It’s not just the coal industry that is disappearing,” Arango said
“All the other industries that were close to the mine
like all the metallurgic industries that were giving the instruments
all the life there is just closing little by little because young people
They have to go out of the region to search for jobs.”
Arango said some of the miners feel abandoned
“The industrial heritage in Asturias is enormous and of significant historical relevance
very little is done to keep it in good condition,” said Adrián San Martín
and see the rusty tower and the abandoned facilities
San Martín started working as a miner when he was 24
and he doesn’t know what his future will be when San Nicolás eventually closes
“What saddens me the most is not that mining ends,” he told Arango
“I understand that coal pollutes and that we have to look for other energy models
But I am outraged that the mines stop here if coal continues to be imported from other countries
“Young people leave the basins in search of work,” he said
Lamelas is now part of the Turón Mining Choir
a group of former miners who still sing the songs of the mine — all while wearing work uniforms
“We are the living memory of this region,” he told Arango
“In the mine there is a very strong camaraderie,” said miner Jose Manuel Guerra
“You work side by side with many colleagues in a dark place and where you know that the slightest mistake can cost you or your colleagues your life
That creates a very strong brotherhood between us.”
Guerra showed off a tattoo to Arango that depicts the tower of the first mine where he worked
is literally in his skin and that of his fellow miners
coal dust gets into your skin and then heals
leaving you with a black mark for life,” he explained
“I have black scratches all over my body.”
“I will never leave Mieres,” he told Arango
I also believe that a revival of the basin is possible
“There are young people trying to offer alternatives to the mine
my colleagues and I have set up a music festival; others a gastronomic restaurant

The aim of the study was to evaluate the relation between prosocialness and happiness in a sample of student teachers (N=224, age=21.42). Adapted versions of a prosocialness scale and another on happiness were used. A structural equations model was estimated that presented a suitable fit (CFI=0.951; TLI=0.944 and RMSEA=0.065). The results yielded a positive relation between prosocialness and happiness. Its implications for initial teacher training are discussed.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the relation between prosocialness and happiness in a sample of student teachers (N=224
Adapted versions of a prosocialness scale and another on happiness were used
A structural equations model was estimated that presented a suitable fit (CFI=0.951; TLI=0.944 and RMSEA=0.065)
The results yielded a positive relation between prosocialness and happiness
Its implications for initial teacher training are discussed
Based on the previous research, Unanue et al. (2021) studied the relationship between prosociality and happiness applied to the organizational environment
and flourishing happiness and their relationship with prosocial behaviors at work
These proved to be positive predictors of the three types of happiness
the three types of happiness positively predicted such prosocial behaviors
This model suggests the existence of a virtuous circle of prosociality and well-being in the workplace
and value-based trajectory to which the young people are exposed is important
The sample was comprised of 224 student teachers belonging to a university located in the Region of La Araucanía
The average age of the participants was 21.42years with a standard (SD) of 2.48years
Prosocialness was measured with an adapted version of the prosocialness scale for adults by Caprara et al. (2005). This was adjusted and validated in a previous study with Chilean student teachers (N=859; age=20.72). It is a one-dimensional model of 13 items (see Table 1) with adequate psychometric properties for use on populations like the one under study
Each item is linked to five categories on an ordinal scale that goes from never (1) to always (5)
The items include actions referring to helping (e.g.
“I try to help others”); to sharing (e.g.
“I easily lend money or other things”); to caring (e.g.
“I try to be close and care for those who need it”); and to feeling empathy (e.g.
“I easily put myself in the shoes of those who are in an awkward situation”)
The internal consistency study applied to the instrument in Chile presented a Cronbach’s alpha=0.867
lower than that obtained by the authors of the original scale in Italy (0.91); however
Table 1. Prosocialness scale for adults by Caprara et al. (2005) (adapted version)
Table 2. Subjective happiness scale by Lyubomirsky and Lepper (1999), translated and evaluated by Vera-Villarroel et al. (2011)
The surveys were applied in August and September 2019
A CFA was carried out using polychoric correlation matrix and the mean- and variance-adjusted unweighted least squares method. This method is recommended to analyze ordinal variables with a limited number of categories (Finney and Di Stefano, 2006; Forero et al., 2009)
The proposed model presented a good fit to the data
yielding the following values: CFI=0.951; TLI=0.944 and RMSEA=0.065 (CI90%=0.053 0.078)
The internal consistency indicators produced by the CFA for the prosocialness and subjective happiness scales were as: Cronbach’s alpha=0.843 and 0.756; omega coefficient=0.858 and 0.839
Figure 1 summarizes the model
including the measurement variables with their factor loads and standard errors
The factor loads varied between 0.442 and 0.731 for prosocialness
and between 0.370 and 0.930 for subjective happiness
all statistically significant (p<0.0001)
The correlation between the prosocialness and subjective happiness scales was 0.338 and statistically significant (p<0.0001)
Figure 1. Standardized results of the CFA applied to the model created by the authors with the support of Mplus 7.11 (Muthén and Muthén, 2012)
the subjective happiness scale presented a slightly lower Cronbach’s alpha than that of the validation study conducted in Chile (0.756 vs
The result of the omega coefficient – the advantages of which have already been explained – served to confirm what was indicated
In relation to the goodness-of-fit indicators, both the CFI and the TLI were within the ranges that the literature considers acceptable (Schumacher and Lomax, 1996). The same occurred with the RMSEA value (Browne and Cudeck, 1993; Gouveia et al., 2018)
more research is needed to make a more definitive statement about this link
What could be truly interesting is if the focus was confined to a university education environment like that of students who have only limited resources
It could also anticipate the response by the subjects about being professionals
since the teaching profession is characterized by mid-level salaries
This is because the recently reviewed theoretical and empirical considerations could be applied to a specific professional area of great potential for the development of prosocial behaviors
This study evaluated the relation between prosocialness and subjective happiness in a sample of student teachers at a university in the Region of La Araucanía
The proposed model presented suitable levels of reliability and fit
Although the sample size was acceptable in terms of the number of items considered
the non-probabilistic nature of the study does not permit these results to be generalized to the rest of the population
This trait is the most relevant limitation of this study
It should be added that the searched data were self-reported by the participants with the resulting impact that social desirability and memory bias could have had on the responses
the homogenizing nature of the scale responses does not account for the inherent specificities that social phenomena have
always located territorially and historically
the evaluated model forms a basic line for the development of future investigations referring to the relation between prosocialness and happiness in the field of teacher training
Given the dynamics that these constructs represent in relation to the evolution of life
longitudinal studies are recommended that incorporate more variables
and the effects of the curriculum and the teaching specialty
the coordination of training proposals referring to the development of socioemotional skills with their corresponding evaluations would be interesting given the increasing number of investigative reports that recommend their inclusion in the teacher training curriculum

A star performance from Gastón Mieres saw Uruguay past Brazil
winning 36-13 in today’s World Cup qualifier
The result confirms Uruguay as South America 1 and Chile as South America 2
Uruguay await the winner of Canada vs the USA
The North American battle will take place in September in a home-and-away series
North America 1 will face South America 1 to determine who qualifies for RWC 2023 as Americas 1
The subsequent round of qualifying will see Chile taking-on the loser of South America 1 vs North America 1
Having immediately gotten themselves deep into the Uruguayan half they were rewarded with the opening points
The ever reliable Moisés Duque landed a penalty 4th minute penalty
Los Teros had a nervous start; they were slow to find their feet
This was true in more ways than merely general play
Felipe Berchesi missed his first shot at goal
The 14th minute penalty miss would have levels the scores
Rodrigo Silva ran down the sideline to touch down in the try zone
Berchesi’s conversion was again wide
Uruguay was hit with a double blow in the 20th minute
Hooker Guillermo Pujadas was carried off with an ankle injury
Brazil won a scrum penalty from the restart
which Duque turned into three points to put Brazil back in front
Two came from Toronto Arrows’ winger Gastón Mieres
The second of which resulted in a try with Mieres just touching down on the line
The front-row won yet another scrum penalty
Brazil kicked for the corner and went for a lineout-maul combination
Andrea Piardi awarded a penalty try and yellow carded Manuel Ardao for pulling down the advancing maul
Uruguay looked to level the scores on half-time; however
His attempted penalty hit the posts and went dead
With it Brazil went into the interval with a 13-10 lead
Brazil needed to make sure Uruguay did not score twice in the second half
Two tries would mean a bonus point and would thus see Brazil eliminated regardless of the result
Good early defense gave Duque an opportunity to extend the lead
A lineout just inside the Brazilian half saw Uruguay tearing Brazil wide open
Mieres showed his pace yet again to sprint down the right touchline and score
Ten minutes later he was in again to polish off an excellent hat-trick
They did so with a 66th minute penalty try
It saw André Arruda yellow carded and Uruguay up to a 29-13 lead
The one-man advantage saw Uruguay exploiting again
The lineout saw the weapon one again; though
Juan Echeverría made up for the scrum flaws to score for Los Teros
The full-time siren saw Uruguay comfortably home and through to the next round of RWC qualifiers
All eyes now turn to Canada’s far east as Canada have home advantage on September 04 against the USA
With attention on the north today’s result is a reminder that the battle to be Americas 1 is open

If you have done all of this and still can't find the email
was a fine example of the kind of gifted amateur racing driver who could still find a place in the grand prix races of the 1950s
he could be relied upon to give a decent account of himself
if seldom managing to embarrass the great stars of the day
One of Mieres's finest performances came in the British Grand Prix of 1955
formed from the perimeter road of the Grand National course
he and his Maserati 250F succeeded in splitting the four cars of the all-conquering Mercedes-Benz team
leading the car of Piero Taruffi before retiring with engine failure
Mieres was born into a wealthy family in the city of Mar del Plata, and took advantage of the opportunity to practise a number of sports, including tennis, rowing, rugby – which he gave up after breaking a leg – and sailing, in which he represented Argentina at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome
first at the wheel of an MG and then with a Bugatti whose previous drivers included the Italian ace Achille Varzi
In 1950 he was invited to join his compatriots Juan Manuel Fangio and José Froilán González on a trip to Europe
they took part in several international races
was fourth place in the Grand Prix of Geneva (Switzerland had not yet banned motor racing)
but in 1953 he recrossed the Atlantic at the behest of Amédée Gordini
who offered him a seat in his team of little Simca-engined single-seaters
Mieres finished a praiseworthy sixth in the Italian Grand Prix at Monza
and at the end of the season he placed an order for one of the Maserati company's potent and beautiful new 250F models
When delivery was delayed by several months
the factory gave him a year-old A6GCM model
painted in his national colours of blue and white
to second place in front of his home crowd in the Buenos Aires Grand Prix
After finishing sixth in the 1954 British Grand Prix at Silverstone – one of four Argentinians in the top six on a wet day – he was invited to join the works Maserati team
Fourth-place finishes in Switzerland and Spain in factory-run cars led to his retention for the following season
After good finishes in the non-championship races in Turin (second)
there was less luck once the 1955 championship proper began
He finished fourth in Holland and seventh at Monza in the last race of his grand prix career
The 250F he drove throughout the 1955 season was for many years to be seen in the Donington Park museum in Leicestershire
Mieres retired from serious racing to look after his business interests and pursue his interest in sailing
He returned to the track occasionally in the following years
and it is thought to have been on oil dropped from his Porsche during the 1958 Cuban Grand Prix that an inexperienced local driver
spun his Ferrari and crashed into the crowd
The tragedy was overshadowed by the kidnapping of Fangio
who was taken from a Havana hotel on the eve of the race and held for 24 hours by pro-Castro rebels
Known to his fellow countrymen as "Bitito"
Mieres spent his last 30 years on a farm in Punta del Este
born 3 December 1924; died 26 January 2012
Spain's Gerardo Menendez Mieres has announced that his long-time partner and championship horse Cassino DC (San Patrignano Cassini x Reichsgraf) is being retired from the sport
Menendez Mieres and Cassino DC represented Spain on multiple occasions in Nations Cups around Europe as well as at the European Championships in Gothenburg in 2017. The pair won the CSIO5* Grand Prix in Gijon
and was on the winning Spanish team in the CSIO3* Nations Cup in Lisbon
On his official Instagram page, Menendez Mieres writes: “Thank you very much for everything my friend
you have taught me to see that dreams can come true
we wish Cassino DC a happy retirement.

Uruguay's Labor Minister Pablo Mieres announced Tuesday that his agency would increase surprise inspections, it was reported in Montevideo
The measure was announced after the discovery of a human trafficking network in the mining sector of the department (province) of Artigas bordering both Argentina and Brazil
Mieres explained that the case had been under investigation by the Police and Interpol
but a complaint filed by a worker triggered the deployment that ended these illegal operations
We came across this complaint and the inspection acted immediately, said Mieres
We are going to continue doing inspective actions these days to complete the picture and determine the irregularities and the corresponding sanctions, the minister also explained
Workers come from other countries who are looking to improve their situation
then the risk of abuse is greater, he further argued
We have to be vigilant because Uruguay has to be a country as it has always been; one of the leading countries in the world in the defense of workers' rights, he insisted
Mieres said the informality rate in Uruguay was 21.5%
which was lower than those registered under the Frente Amplio (FA) administration of the late President Tabaré Vázquez
FA presidential hopeful Mario Bergara claimed that 90% of the jobs created in the last months were unregistered ones
Informality dropped 3.5 points from 25% to 21.5% during the Multicolor government despite everything that happened in between
despite the crisis..., Mieres replied
There are 40,000 fewer informal workers than in the time of the Frente Amplio, he added
There were 400,000 informal workers and now there are 360,000.
Mieres intends to resign his post later this year to run for president on behalf of the Independent Part (PI)
a social-democrat group within the Multicolor coalition
He will be replaced by Undersecretary Mario Arizti
President Luis Lacalle Pou's administration announced earlier this year

Former Argentine international fly half Ignacio Mieres has been linked to a move back to France to play in either the second or third division for Dax
Mieres himself posted photos on social media over the past few days of him in Dax itself
Reports have also reached the French media with Sud Oest reporting the upcoming move
It will see the six time capped Puma returning to France after previous stints with Perpignan and Stade Français in the Top 14
His career has also involved playing in England for the Leicester Tigers
Mieres’ time spent at Exeter was the most successful with him impressing in the 2010-2011 and 2011-2-12 seasons which saw him earning a test recall in 2012 when he played in the home wins over Italy and France in San Juan and Córdoba
His four prior tests were against Chile and Uruguay between 2007 and 2010
His time at international level has reached an end and he was not offered a Super Rugby contract despite having been available following completing his time at Worcester this past season
Still just 28 years of age Mieres nonetheless has plenty of rugby left in him and his soon to be confirmed move to Dax will see him playing for a club to have been home to a number of Pumas including Rugby World Cup 2015 squad members Horacio Agulla and Juan Pablo Socino
Dax finished 15th in the 2014-2015 Pro d2 season ahead of only Massy
In finishing in the bottom two the club was relegated but the club is yet to know whether it will be in the Pro d2 or the Fédérale 1 due to the promoted Lille being in trouble and seemingly been blocked from rising to the Pro d2
Olivier Magne and Fabian Pelous are all former Dax players
has suffered in the professional era as small-town teams have found it increasingly difficult to be competitive against the growing number of big city clubs

Mexico hosted and defeated Jamaica on Saturday
A few years ago the then Ministry of Housing launched the competition ‘Hacemos Ciudad’ (creating a city) for the construction of 5,688 social housing units in differen regions of Spain
This is one of the shortlisted projects that has finally been carried to completion
and which comprises 151 apartments distributed in two adjacent urban blocks
Since matters such as volume and form were explicitly defined in the brief
the project was tackled starting from other conditions like the specific study of the functional variables of the housing unit
Mieres was one of the cities chosen for the competition ‘Hacemos Ciudad’ (creating a city)
This is one of the seven shortlisted projects
whose 151 dwellings are placed in two urban blocks and protected with galleries
The core of the proposal consists of a cross-through apartment
and with no structural elements in its interior
The mechanical spaces along with kitchen and bathrooms are concentrated in a technical wall
These features guarantee cross ventilation
freedom to organize the storage spaces and versatile rooms that can be adapted to the needs of the users
The outer enclosure of the building protects the intermediate space of galleries
which perform as thermal cushions for the interior spaces
This polycarbonate skin turns the building into a lantern at nighttime
The galleries are configured as intermediate spaces between the interior of the dwelling and the city
maintaining a warm temperature in winter and a cool one in summer
Drawing inspiration from the most traditional architecture of Asturias
they act as thermal and spatial cushions for the apartments
The orientation of the housing units obeys to the views and the thermal conditions of the environment
protecting themselves from noise and seeking light to provide the best dwelling space possible
To make the most of the sunning possibilities in a particularly sensitive place
all the apartments have at least one facade in contact with sunlight: south
These facades have more glass surfaces to favor solar gain
while the north-facing fronts are more enclosed to reduce heat loss
so they are not glazed but have more color
The overlapping of different types of housing and the random action of users creates a dynamic and haphazard urban front
The distribution and the size of the windows in each interior facade depends on its orientation
the use of galleries has a bearing on the exterior image of the building
because its enclosure generates a continuous front that acts as an urban elevation
It consists of a polycarbonate skin located in front of the running terrace
This skin opens up with a system of sliding shutters
which defines the relationship of the apartments with the exterior and gives the facades a dynamic character
The interior facade behind the gallery is clad with ceramic slabs of different lively colors
which establish a strong contrast with the gray skies that cover the area
Las galerías protegen las viviendas con la piel translúcida de policarbonato
mientras que su segundo frente se forra con piezas cerámicas de colores intensos que contribuyen a la creación de un espacio animado

who have been searching for a replacement for Burton Francis
the South African opting to join Grenoble next season
and a move that could pay greater dividends come the end of the season
While Dax are currently floundering in 12th place on the Pro D2 table
Agen are in 2nd spot and will enter the barrages as favorites to win the second promotion ticket to the Top 14
Oyonnax clinched the top spot last weekend and secured their return to the top flight

It has been almost a year since Vaughn “Sandman” Mieres – reputed drug lord and gang leader – was killed. His reign over the North Coast, which lasted decades, directly or indirectly contributed to the ever-increasing death toll associated with gang activity in TT.
But Sandman’s own “business” brought business for many others, especially on his home turf of School Street, Las Cuevas and as Newsday discovered, his death has led to financial strain for some of the people of the area.
Joyce McLean, who has lived in Las Cuevas for more 57 years, and who owns a shop on School Street, was there before Sandman’s rise, and is still there after his fall.
She told Newsday she knew Mieres as a baby – and lauded him as someone who helped the community.
She interrupted the conversation to sell in the shop, which at the time had only one other customer, who had been there since it opened at 7 am. The new customer, a light-skinned youth with a tattoo on his upper chest, came to buy cigarettes, but only had a $100 bill.
Mc Lean told him he could take the cigarettes and bring the exact change for her later – an offer he humbly accepted. She told him she didn’t have enough change; the truth was she had not made much money for the day.
She told Newsday that before Sandman died, she would have made $300-$400 by noon. On that day she was barely able to scrape together $150 from sales.
“Before he died, everything was good. People were coming to the store frequently. Everyone was buying. People had more money.
“I don’t know how they were getting it, but since he died everything changed,” she said.
She lamented that the same people who would spend by the hundreds before Sandman was killed now barely come to the store.
She is not the only one. Business owners along the North Coast admitted to seeing a difference shortly after Sandman died. They are struggling to make the money they did when there was an influx of cash into the area, albeit by questionable means.
Sandman was born in a small house on School Street not far from McLean’s shop. She recalled that she and his mother, Gloria, were both pregnant at around the same time and she had held him as a baby.
Villagers said he was never interested in school growing up and would frequently skip it to go play in the sand on the nearby beach.
A popular business owner in Maracas said he knew him growing up, when he was a respectful youth, who “did not seem like a threat.”
McLean also called him a respectful person.
“Sandman grew up from a baby as a nice child,” she said.
“He is dead and gone and we never spoke to him for certain reasons. But that have nothing to do about telling you something bad about him. If I lie, God will know. He grew up as a nice boy.”
But then came his first jail term. Newsday was told he was arrested with a gun and marijuana and spent around seven years behind bars.
It was after this, villagers claim, he slowly turned into the “community leader” and alleged gang member with a drug-smuggling ring for which he’s remembered today.
Legitimately, Sandman owned about 30 fishing boats, which he used to supply his fish-processing business. He was also involved in construction and farming.
Some would even call him a philanthropist. News reports quoted people in Las Cuevas describing him as a “godsend” who would supply the area with work and money, threw Christmas parties and went through the area with bags of toys for children.
The police knew him as a drug dealer and gun smuggler with a network which spread as far as Venezuela and Colombia, and kept him at the top of a north-coast drug empire for about 20 years.
Allegations against Sandman include the murder of Selwyn “Robocop” Alexis in 2016, and the trafficking of young Venezuelan women.
He was charged with being a gang leader during the 2011 state of emergency, but was released for lack of evidence. In 2018 he was arrested and charged with possession of arms and ammunition and was released on $250,000 bail.
His empire kept people fed in his village, and gave him the means to protect those under his watch.
“All the killing of the people, we don’t know about that,” McLean said. “But we were at our business at a point in time and some people came to harass us. They were from South or somewhere and they came with stupidness behind us. He rallied the entire village and they chased them away.
“Although we don’t speak to him, he said, ‘Don’t hambug my elderly people.’
“So give Jack his jacket. No one could have come from outside to do anyone anything in the village, especially elderly people. He would stand up to them.”
But there was at least one warning sign that the end of the empire was approaching. Sandman’s daughter was put in the line of fire when gunmen attacked one of his vehicles on June 12, 2019, near Providence Girls’ School on Belmont Circular Road.
A month later, gunmen – one of whom was identified as an ex-associate of his – stormed his house and killed him and three other people.
Reports said a squad of eight attacked Sandman’s home at 2.15 am on July 25 from two directions. A team of four approached the front gate. Meanwhile another group climbed the hills and sneaked around the back of his Hernandes Trace home.
Nigel “Blood” Octim was guarding the front gate while another man was at the back of the property. When the gunmen banged on the front gate claiming to be police, Octim answered it. As soon as he opened the gate, he was shot dead. The second guard, Kadir Joseph, was shot dead as well.
When they got inside the house, the attackers shot Sandman and his wife Alita Dehere several times. His two children, four and 16, were spared.
One gunman was wounded and shortly after was dropped off at a hospital. He was later charged with the four murders.
Michael “Uncle Sam” Pierre, a lifelong resident on the North Coast and owner of Uncle Sam’s Restaurant, in a conversation with Newsday said despite Sandman’s notorious image, the people of the North Coast had nothing to fear from him. He said Sandman and associates would frequent the bar and have a good time without disrespecting him or other patrons.
He recalled a conversation with Sandman not long before his death, when Mieres hinted he might want to run his business on a strictly legitimate basis.
“He was saying something like that to me, and I told him that it would be a good thing,” Uncle Sam said. “But at the same time I recalled something someone else said – an empire built by blood must be maintained by blood, or it will fall. It resonated in me at that moment.
“So while I was telling him that it would be to get out of whatever business he was in, I knew it would be very difficult.”
Asked for insight into the void left by Sandman’s death, Comissioner of Police Gary Griffith said it was a phenomenon which happens all over the world.
“Major drug dealers are seen as ‘Robin Hoods’ in the community. They try to see if they could throw free money into the community to get their trust and provide security.”
He said this is one of the main ways to recruit young men as “soldiers” in gang lords’ personal militias.
“They will have youths as lookouts, they would hire people as gang members.
He pointed out that the money and resources which people in the area enjoy are usually accrued by illegal activities – and at the cost of people’s lives.
“There is a price to pay to lift the standards of a community through these people.
“Because the money a criminal is giving is usually blood money, their finances could be linked to criminal activities. It allows competitors of that criminal to target these people.”
He said Sandman was connected to several deaths, and it was through his access to funding from various sources – including government contracts – that he was able to do business that contributed to the murder toll in one way or the other.
“Other murders could have been committed because of what a gang member could have done. Other people could have been killed in other circumstances, for example being in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
He said the reason there is a financial drought in the area is because the people connected to Sandman were previously living beyond their means through their ill-gotten gains.
“You can’t feel sorry for these people, because they were acquiring wealth by harming others,” Griffith said. “Most people are living through hard times. But that doesn’t mean you should engage in criminal activity.”
But one youth from School Street told Newsday things are actually easier now that Sandman is gone. He said there is no chokehold on who people can approach for work and where they can look for employment.
The youth – the same tattooed young man who visited McLean’s shop – said because of Sandman’s influence, work came through him, for the most part. And because of his business there were certain places where some people from the area could not go without suspicion.
The availability of work depended very much on who Sandman liked, and “he didn’t like everybody.”
Griffith said when alleged gang leaders like Sandman are killed it creates a void which the police have a duty to fill immediately, “through good rather than evil.
“Another criminal element will take control, unless it is controlled by other elements. We are that element.”
He said now that the criminal element has been removed police must create better opportunities for youths in sport and education.
New programmes will soon be rolled out, he said, including one called Cross Borders in which young people will be paired with a police officer for guidance, much like the Big Brother programme in the US.
“The Sandman empire has fallen and it is now dust.
“But if we don’t act quickly others will start to build.”
Griffith said while he could not give any assurance that any area could be absolutely safe, in some cases when a kingpin or gang leader is taken down, there is a spike in criminal activities as lieutenants struggle for power. But he maintained he would not let any criminal elements feel they can control an entire community.
“I intend to bring down any criminal empire.”

A police constable last assigned to the North Eastern Division Task Force was granted bail on Friday after he was charged with four offences.
Police said in a media release, PC Sheldon Mieres was granted bail on Wednesday by Justice of the Peace Stephen Young at the St Joseph Police Station.
Mieres was charged with the transfer of firearms, transfer of ammunition, contravening the conditions of the Firearm User’s Licence (FUL), and being in possession of five rounds of .40 ammunition in excess of his authorisation. He is also alleged to have had 26 rounds of 9 mm ammunition in excess of his authorised amount.
Mieres was one of three policemen held last week by officers of the Special Operations Response Team and the Southern Division Task Force, who acted on intelligence obtained from the Strategic Services Agency.
Officers of the Professional Standards Bureau searched Mieres' home and allegedly found 80 rounds of 9 mm ammunition and 40 rounds of .40 ammunition.
Police also searched his vehicle and allegedly found a Spring Field Hellcat pistol with two Aero magazines and 26 rounds of 9 mm ammunition, together with his FUL booklet, which showed he was in excess by five rounds of .40 ammunition and 26 rounds of 9 mm ammunition.
Police said the homes of other officers were searched but nothing illegal was found. They were subsequently released without charge.
GUNMEN yesterday recreated a murder scene from two years ago as they ambushed and killed the cousin of murdered fisherman and reputed gang leader Vaughan ‘Sandman’ Mieres.
According to police, Dillon “Mission” Mieres along with his wife Mary Reyes were in their white Toyota Corolla on El Luengo Road, Maracas, St Joseph when a white Nissan Wingroad slammed into them and gunmen opened fire. Mieres died at the scene while Reyes was taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope where she remains warded in a serious condition. The gunmen abandoned the vehicle and escaped into the the hills.
Vaughan 46, his wife Alita Dehere, 50, Nigel Octave, 36 – all of Las Cuevas – and Kadir Joseph, 25, of San Juan were killed in an early-morning ambush at Vaughan’s home on July 25. Durelle “Shorto” Raymond was arrested on July 29, four days after the killings and charged with the murders.

The murder yesterday had an impact on a wedding that was due to take place at La Soledad Estate for 3 pm. The wedding party was delayed on the road as investigators processed the crime scene which was cleared sometime after 5 pm.
In two other shootings, two unidentified men were found murdered in the Port of Spain Division between Friday night and yesterday morning.
Police reported that around 2.30 pm yesterday a man of mixed heritage was found near a track off Eastern Main Road, Laventille, near the dilapidated site of the Citrus Growers Association. Police said residents heard gunshots earlier in the day and later found the man who wore a black long sleeved jersey, brown three-quarter pants and black rubber slippers. Police suspect him to be in his twenties.
In the second killing, a man was found shot dead at Rose Hill, East Dry River, Port of Spain. Police reported that at about 7.40 pm on Friday, officers went to Mosley Place, East Dry River where they found the man of African descent on the side of the road. He wore a blue bandana on his head, a white vest and white three-quarter pants. He was shot several times, police said.
Freeport man killed opposite police station
The brazenness of killers remained unmatched after a man was killed opposite the Freeport Police Station last night.
According to police reports, Hardath Solomon, 42, of Mission Road, Freeport, was ambushed and shot dead, at about 7 pm, after he left the police station where he went to report his presence as part of a bail condition.
Solomon was opposite the station when he was shot and collapsed in front of a parlour. Police said a Nissan Tiida was seen speeding off.
Solomon was out on bail for the the 2017 robbery of First Citizens bank where $3 million was stolen. He was accused of using a blowtorch cut a hole to gain entry into the Montrose branch of the bank and made off with $3,000,030 on September 23, that year.

Vaughn Mieres and his wife Alika "Letty" Dehere

TV6 crime show host, ASP Roger Alexander, has denied claims that he is the brother-in-law of murdered drug lord Vaughn “Sandman” Mieres.
Mieres, his wife, Alika "Lite" Dehere and two bodyguards were shot dead at his home in Las Cuevas on Thursday morning.
Alexander responded to social media posts that he was Mieres’ relative on the Beyond the Tape show on Thursday evening.
He said, “This man is not my brother-in-law. I am telling you all again. This man, that man, was not my brother-in-law.”
Alexander said there were several posts on social media claiming that Dehere was his sister and linking him to Mieres.
Alexander did not say whether he was related to the woman.
Police said eight men stormed into the house at around 2.15am and opened fire.
The attack ended in the death of Mieres, his wife, Nigel “Blood” Octim, and a fourth unidentified man.
Two children, ages 16 and four, who were in the house survived the shooting.
Police said the men armed with high-powered rifles entered the property from two locations and opened fire on the men.
Octim was killed at the entrance of the compound, while the second man was shot dead in a hammock at the back of the house.
Mieres was shot multiple times as he attempted to hide underneath a bed.
The Express was told that Dehere hid inside a cupboard and dialled the police but he was found and killed.
Investigators found the two getaway vehicles burnt near a beach.
It is believed that the gunmen escaped in two fishing boats.
A suspect was detained when he visited the Port-of-Spain General Hospital with gunshot wounds.

Yet whenever Mieres pulls a special trick or two of his own on behalf of the Devon club, with whom he has just started a third Premiership campaign, those watching are tempted to make certain comparisons.
Like Hernandez, he was born in Buenos Aires and mastered rugby's fundamentals at the Deportivo Francesa club. Like Hernandez, he is a goal-kicking stand-off of a high calibre, blessed with sufficient versatility to do a turn elsewhere in the back division. Like Hernandez, he is well over 6ft in height – unusually tall for a No 10. Like Hernandez, he has set his heart on representing the Pumas at the next World Cup, in England in three years' time.
"The situation is difficult. Maybe it will get worse. I think it will reach the point when players from Argentina have to decide between international rugby and a club career here, and that will be tough for us. I understand both sides of the argument. When it is possible to see both sides, you have real issues when it is time to make a decision."
After a second spell at Stade Français and a brief sojourn back home in Buenos Aires, he moved to Exeter – a club whose intelligent moves in the marketplace have kept pace with the fast-developing quality of their rugby. "I did not know what to expect," Mieres admits. "I find it tough, being away from home, and when you're not playing in the first team, it's even tougher. For the first few months, I was playing for the seconds – a very good standard of rugby, but not what I wanted.
He will be happier still if, when he reaches the end of his current contract at Sandy Park at the end of the 2013-14 season, two things happen: he is given the chance to extend his Premiership career, and the Pumas pencil him in for the World Cup.
Hernandez will, the South Americans can only hope, still be in his Maradona phase. If Mieres adds just a twist of Messi to the mix, heaven help their opponents.

court prosecutor Inspector Winston Dillon said the conspiracy charge was a very serious one and was allegedly committed while Mieres was on bail on the pending charges

Dillon objected to bail on the grounds that it was a criminal offence and the yellow crown parrot was a protected species
