Brazilian researchers have used three-dimensional (3D) printing to develop an artificial skin model with properties that are more similar to those of human skin
called Human Skin Equivalent with Hypodermis (HSEH)
could be used in studies to treat diseases and injuries such as wounds and burns
as well as in the development of medicines and cosmetics
without the need for animal testing.
which ends on November 28th at the Faculty of Medicine of the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM)
aims to strengthen links between researchers from the state of São Paulo and the European country
“We were able to develop a complete skin model with three layers: the epidermis, dermis and hypodermis. In this way, we were able to obtain a model of the organ with characteristics very similar to those of a human being,” Ana Carolina Migliorini Figueira
researcher at LNBio-CNPEM and coordinator of the project
3D skin models have been explored as an alternative method to using animals
But the limitation of the options developed so far is that they neglect the hypodermis – the deepest layer of the skin
which plays a fundamental role in regulating important biological processes such as hydration and cell differentiation
influencing processes such as water regulation
making it essential for creating complete and functional skin models
With the support of FAPESP
the researchers used tissue engineering techniques to improve the technology and succeed in building a full-thickness human skin equivalent with the hypodermis to create an environment closer to real human tissue
“This new 3D skin model with the hypodermis layer provides a more accurate in vitro platform for disease modeling and toxicology studies,” concluded Figueira
“The results of the tests we performed show that the hypodermis is essential for modulating the expression of a wide range of genes that are vital for skin functionality
such as those related to tissue protection and regeneration,” she said
The researchers used 3D bioprinting to build a skin model based on collagen
which serves as a matrix for cell interaction
LNBio will produce the skin for its own studies
but will also be able to produce the material for partner research institutions
The idea is to help develop grafts for treating wounds and burns
Through a project also funded by FAPESP
under an agreement with the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO)
the Brazilian researchers intend to use this more realistic 3D skin to develop a model of diabetic skin with chronic wounds and
The idea is that the LNBio researchers will be able to vascularize the in vitro human skin model in three layers to create a version that mimics the skin characteristics of people with diabetes
who may have wounds that are difficult to heal and are at risk of limb amputation
a group of Dutch researchers affiliated with the Radboud University Medical Center is working to develop new biomaterials to create a dressing to treat diabetic wounds
is to test it both in an animal model and on the human diabetic skin that we’ll develop,” Figueira explained
a group of researchers from the Federal University of ABC (UFABC)
intends to use synthetic biology tools to build biosensors based on genetic circuits
to monitor the contamination of environmental samples
By combining biological and engineering knowledge
the researchers aim to introduce new functions in natural organisms by developing new genetic sequences
“There are natural RNA and protein molecules that can interact with mercury and manganese
The idea is to design these genetic circuits
to monitor the contamination of water samples by these metals
without the need to use robust and expensive equipment,” Milca Rachel da Costa Ribeiro Lins
professor at UFABC and coordinator of the project
The field of biotechnology is believed to be strategic for Spain and has received large investments from the UCM in recent years
emphasized Spanish researchers who participated in the event
“The United States remains the world leader in the biotechnology market
Central America and the Middle East are showing very high growth
One of them is that there are around 4,500 companies working in this field,” said Maria Isabel de la Riesco
Biotechnology companies in Spain employ more researchers than other industries and salaries in the field are higher than the national average
“Spain has a 2.46% share of the world's publications of biotechnology-related articles
and their citation rate is 21% higher than the global average
About 60% of the scientific production in biotechnology in the country is carried out in international collaboration,” stated Riesco
The São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) is a public institution with the mission of supporting scientific research in all fields of knowledge by awarding scholarships
fellowships and grants to investigators linked with higher education and research institutions in the state of São Paulo
FAPESP is aware that the very best research can only be done by working with the best researchers internationally
it has established partnerships with funding agencies
and research organizations in other countries known for the quality of their research and has been encouraging scientists funded by its grants to further develop their international collaboration

the UCM students: everything blends with the typical neighborhood life and makes this area of the capital one of the best places to live
On the hill of Príncipe Pío and separated by the Parque del Oeste is Argüelles, a neighborhood that belongs to the district of Moncloa-Aravaca, but that seems to be a part of Chamberí
Argüelles is an expansion of the center of Madrid that took place at the end of the 19th century
It is bounded on one side by the Plaza de España and on the other by the Air Force Headquarters
architecturally reminiscent of El Escorial and many of the buildings in the northwest area of Madrid
The barracks sits on the site of the former model prison
which was the largest in Madrid during the 19th century
The West Park occupies almost 100 hectares and in addition to improving the quality of life of those who enjoy it every day
it makes the neighborhood and especially the blocks of buildings that look directly onto the tree-lined promenade one of the most expensive in the capital
Brutalista is one of those newcomers to the neighborhood that already has good eating and drinking parishioners. The method is simple, crude, crude: you choose between three types of tasting menu(from 28
Its specialty: pickles and “everything with bones” (words of its chef and ideologist
wine and partridges while we enjoyed the feast at the bar)
From the last time we visited this temple of product cuisine and industrial concrete aesthetics
we would like to recommend the smoked sardine
El Lagar is a classic in the lists of bars with free tapas but it also has an important emotional factor: if you have studied in Madrid and you have not been to this bar
It is usually crowded with college students who coexist with the usual parishioners and even with those who have it as a reference between bars to watch soccer
is it possible to get to know someone through their recipe book? Frida Intima is proof that it is, and that it is a unique way to do so. Here you can taste the dishes that were cooked at the home of the Mexican artist, in that refuge that was the Red House. The clemachile (shrimp marinated in lime with a touch of tomato juice and celery), the cochinita sopes or the suadero taco with marrow are some of them, to which a careful cocktail bar is added.
But there is more: Frida Íntima is also a free art gallery where you can find unpublished photographs donated by the artist’s family.
Casa Paco has been, for almost 70 years, an icon of the Argüelles neighborhood and a hallmark of its identity. It is worth a visit if you are in the area. From here we recommend their omelettes (15 different flavors) or their croquettes of Iberian, boletus, cabrales, sirloin or oxtail.
The narrow place has an open kitchen and its clientele is very varied and traditional. In addition, they also have a small terrace, which is usually full, so we recommend you to go early.
View this post on Instagram The Fix has some of the must-haves for a great breakfast: freshly baked pastries, specialty coffee (toasted by them)
a spicy and intense chai latte and an avocado toast that is hard not to order every time
It also has a cave on the lower floor where you can work
read and spend a quiet moment with the aroma of coffee
if you are able to leave without one of the many books they sell
with a special section of independent publishers
the books and the light from the large window help you want to make Ad Hoc that third space that is neither your home nor work
who gave it its name and who arranged the house as it is today so that the boomers, millennials and centenials can visit it today
In it we can find more than 50,000 works of art including paintings
life and aesthetics of the Spanish upper class of the time. An eclectic journey through the different rooms of the house that will bring us closer to styles such as classicism
neo-baroque and rococo and is certainly worth a visit
The palace of Liria is the private residence of the House of Alba
one of the families with the most noble titles in Europe
It is a neoclassical building by Ventura Rodríguez
one of the most relevant and prolific architects in Madrid at the time
it suffered several fires and the entire interior was lost
although the great works of art it housed had already been placed in safekeeping among the British Embassy
one of the most iconic monuments of Madrid and the Parque del Oeste
has been in the capital since 1968 and was a gift from Egypt to Spain for its collaboration in the rescue of the Abu Simbel temples
It is estimated that it was built between 185 BC and the first century AD
is free and self-guided and can be visited from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 8 pm
one of the most emblematic places of this park is the Temple of Debod
but in its extension of about 100 hectares has others such as the cable car
an artificial stream or its famous rose garden that houses more than 600 species of roses
it is said that from here you can see one of the most beautiful sunsets in Madrid
is not uncommon to hear applause at some point during sunset near the Temple of Debod
“During the early hours of yesterday morning a Nazi commando set fire to the Rafael Alberti bookstore in Madrid
Despite the numerous threats and attacks to which the bookstore has been subjected
there was no police protection at the time
insurance companies do not want to take over bookstores.” This entry
They wanted to burn down the Alberti bookstore
to set ablaze the revolutionary thing that can exist within the pages of a book
Today it continues to be a cultural reference in the neighborhood
events… all for literature and creation
It is a family flower shop that has passed from parents to children and it shows in the treatment
the loyalty of the neighbors of the neighborhood and even in the prices
since it is far from the franchises of flower shops where you get a kidney for a bouquet or a monstera that will die in three days
even if you don’t want a bouquet of roses or an orchid
you can stop by to see (and smell) the place
if only to buy a 2 euro cactus or a hanging poto
which survive the most extreme circumstances such as an unlit basement in the center of Madrid
it’s not that they organize book signings
or that they give you perfect advice if you’re looking for textbooks on film
but that they also serve beer and coffee
Coixet and even Fellini decorate the wall with their dedications
giving a unique character to the singular bookstore
It’s the ideal place to have a wine and chat about how much you love (or hate) Christopher Nolan or compete for who knows the most names of women nominated for Best Director Oscars after seeing a movie at the Golem
you’ll probably get a bit of rage here and there
but the Eight and a Half is a safe space for film buffs

summer begins as soon as the solstice occurs; unofficially
when the temperature warrants a full bath in a pool of water
the public swimming pools (municipally owned and regionally owned) declared the swimming pool season started on Wednesday
There are some differences between the municipal and regional ones: prices
And in this article we recap what each one is and how to book them
will be open until September 8 and their schedule is from 10am to 9pm
Its price is somewhat cheaper (4.5€ the standard ticket) and it is also scalable depending on the circumstances of each person
