the situation of table grape imports was quite difficult in Spain
following the end of the Peruvian and South African supply
and a gap is expected due to the early end of the Chilean season
"The volumes that didn't arrive in time for the Christmas season
had to be marketed in the first two weeks of January
together with the batches already planned for that period," reports the sales department of the Spanish company Uvasdoce Fresh
based in the municipality of Monforte del Cid
"This led to an even more complex scenario
prices recorded a significant drop compared to December and sales slowed down," they say
We are handling the last batches from Peru
with the highest volumes in these last few weeks of February
and still a good quality product," they say
as there won't be large batches arriving in April
we have noticed that the campaigns are out of sync
Chile has also started earlier and this will cause a supply gap in early May," says the company
the vines have already started budding in Alicante
we are seeing quite a uniform budding thanks to the mild temperatures recorded in the area
This favorable weather has allowed the buds to develop consistently
which is crucial for the growth and health of the plants," they say
"We expect this trend to continue with the remaining varieties
as any abrupt changes in the weather could take a toll on the budding process and
on the yield," says the representative of Uvasdoce Fresh

SPAIN: The first phase of a corridor linking Madrid with Murcia opened on February 1
with the inauguration of a 38∙3 km section of high speed line between Monforte del Cid and Orihuela
A special train carried dignitaries including Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez Pérez-Castejón from Madrid to the opening ceremony at Orihuela Miguel Hernández station
RENFE has launched the service using a fleet of first generation Talgo Class 102 trainsets providing 316 seats and a maximum speed of 300 km/h
The full size map of Spain is available in the Maps & Data section
There are initially by two return trains per day
departing from Madrid Atocha at 06.55 and 19.55 and arriving at Orihuela at 09.30 and 22.18
Return workings depart from Orihuela at 06.28 and 20.48
The Madrid – Orihuela journey time has been reduced by approximately an hour
RENFE Operadora said that services would be increased as demand grows
The line from Monforte del Cid to Orihuela with an intermediate station at Elche is double track
electrified at 25 kV 50 Hz and has a design speed of 350 km/h
It is equipped with both ETCS Level 2 and ASFA Digital train control and ATP systems
the Madrid – Orihuela service will be the first in Spain to require trains to transition between two generations of ETCS lineside equipment during the journey
The route diverges from the Madrid – Alacant high speed line at Monforte del Cid
and is intended to run along the coast eventually as far southwest as Almería
but to date construction is underway only as far as Murcia
Civil works contracts were awarded in July 2005 for the section from Beniel (15 km west of Orihuela) to the outskirts of Murcia
and between April 2008 and May 2010 for the remainder of the route
A further package was tendered in May 2015 covering remodelling of Murcia del Carmen station
the high speed line has been through multiple design alterations since the procurement stage
Until 2015 it was envisaged that access to Murcia del Carmen would be at grade to reduce costs
and in late 2014 it seemed as though the railway would be ready for use the following year; in 2017 the Ministry for Public Works again announced that the inauguration would take place that year
ADIF has since chosen to develop a 5 km underground alignment through Murcia
At present there is no confirmed timescale for opening of the extensions beyond Orihuela
Around 7 km of the new line will be in tunnel
Principal structures include the 2 020 m long Callosa de Segura and 1 730 m long El Murón tunnels; a 1 558 m long dive-under beneath the A7 motorway; and a 783 m long tunnel under Orihuela
On the outskirts of Murcia the line crosses over an irrigation canal known as El Reguerón on a 366 m long
the longest structure of its kind in Spain
SPAIN: Passenger services on the final 15·9 km of high speed line between Orihuela and Murcia began on December 20
following an official inauguration by King Felipe VI the previous day
SPAIN: Following approval by the infrastructure ministry at the end of August
ADIF Alta Velocidad is to call tenders for construction of 31 km of high speed line between Lorca and Pulpí
one of the final stretches of the high speed corridor between Almería and Murcia
and the resulting contract would run for 34 months
SPAIN: In mid-January ADIF invited tenders for the electrification of the 73 km between Monforte de Lemos and Lugo as the infrastructure manager continues its gradual modernisation of the single track railway running north-south between Monforte and A Coruña

There may be welcome relief for regular drivers of Alicante’s congested AP-70 ring road with plans currently under consideration by the government
As reported today by Alicante Plaza
there is an option being looked at which would see the AP7 secondary ring road being ‘liberated’ of tolls for a 34 kilometre stretch from Monforte del Cid in order to ease congestion on the main ring road
The AP-70 currently experiences significant congestion at early morning and late afternoon peak hours with commuter traffic from the city
Alicante City Council also cut off traffic along the coast road
putting further pressure on the main ring road
It has been estimated that liberating the toll road so that more drivers use it would ease congestion on the AP-70 by 15 to 20 per cent
The financing for maintenance of the AP7 road is covered by income from its tolls and it has been reckoned that
should the government liberate this stretch
taking over maintenance would require in the region of five million euros a year
a company put together in 2004 explicitly for the project
However the road got much lower usage than expected and by 2013 the company was struggling and finally went into liquidation in 2017
During the discussions about ceasing tolls on the AP7 it has been pointed out that there would be no additional costs to the state since it had already been forced to write off the contract to the tune of 307 million euros when Ciralsa folded
Alongside talks about the future of tolls on the AP7
there is discussion around investing to create a third lane on the AP-70 in sections that attract the most congestion
Currently the only action has taken place around the road to access the University of Alicante where 1.1 million euros was invested to widen access lanes and remove the need for vehicles accessing the San Vicente campus to use the roundabout
A decision on whether the AP7 tolls will continue after January 2024 is expected in due course
the first Candy Snaps grapes started to be harvested in Alicante by the company Uvasdoce
officially kicking off a campaign in which there are prospects for the demand to remain acceptable thanks
to the good quality of the fruit this year
we will start harvesting the first red and white seedless grapes
and in week 31 we will already have significant volumes that will allow us to serve all our customers," says Miriam Cutillas
of the Marketing and Sales Department of Uvasdoce
"In May and June we have had a very good demand - even greater than what we were able to supply - since there has been a scarcity of melon
We are confident that consumption will be good this year
given also the high quality that we observe in the fields
We have been working with the Candy Snaps variety for 4 years and I dare say that this is the year in which the quality is best
"Although production costs have risen considerably
we can't raise the selling prices of table grapes exorbitantly
is seeing its own production grow by between 8 and 10%
and imports in the off-season period by 45%
for this domestic grape campaign it has expanded its packing area with an additional line and 100 more workers
"Next year we will grow again in a very significant manner
which we started in 2010 and which has taken us 12 years
It seems we really like the number 12 in this company," says Miriam
this is the first year in which we will not market a single kilo of seeded grapes
although there is still a niche market for seeded grapes
it is getting smaller and smaller and we prefer to continue specializing in seedless grapes."
we have managed for table grapes to be consumed all year round in Spain
This trend has come to consolidate in part thanks to the varietal change that this product has undergone
achieving better flavors that meet the expectations of consumers
as well as a consistency in terms of quality in the production from various origins," says Miriam Cutillas
"Table grapes are becoming increasingly present in the shopping basket," she adds
While the domestic market is one of the most important for Uvasdoce
the firm also exports to the United Kingdom
and it is also gaining ground in the Baltic countries
"This is the first year in which our special Las Chuches de Uvasdoce children's packaging formats have been shipped via airfreight to the United Arab Emirates
where there is room for value-added products
Shipping table grapes to distant destinations by sea is proving to be very challenging and expensive
Freight rates to export to South Africa are prohibitively expensive
but we hope to reach agreements with our customers," says the company's marketing and sales manager

Spain has the longest high speed railway network in Europe and the second highest in the world
The country's total network accounts to 2,665km
Administrador De Infraestructuras Ferroviarias (Adif)
Spain has the longest high speed railway network in Europe and the second highest in the world, after China. The country’s total network accounts to 2,665km, with five dedicated lines. These lines establish high speed links between the largest cities of Spain and the capital city of Madrid.
The Madrid-Levante high speed rail network is one such network
which connects the capital city to the Mediterranean coast
The 955km high speed track is being built at an estimated cost of €12.5bn ($15.68bn)
making it the most expensive railway project ever undertaken in the country
The network is designed for operation at speeds of 300kmph
It consists of a number of sections and is compatible for both passenger and freight operations
The Albacete-Alicante section is scheduled to open in 2012. The section between the cities of Murcia and Castellon is scheduled for opening in 2015
State owned Spanish railway operator Administrador De Infraestructuras Ferroviarias (Adif) is the operator of the line
The European Union is providing a financial aid of €1.95bn ($2.45bn) towards the railway project
European Investment Bank (EIB) is also funding the project
The line starts from Puerta de Atocha station and heads towards Cuenca and Motilla del Palancar
The main line heads towards Albacete and La Encina
At La Encina the line branches into different sections
A section of these branches connects to the Mediterranean Corridor through Barcelona and Almeria
A stretch from here heads towards Jativa and Valencia, and stretches towards the south-east up to Monforte del Cid. At this point a segment branch heads towards Alicante
while the main section heads towards Murcia and Cartagena
Trains heading towards Seville and the Spanish east coast will initially use the track between Madrid and Seville until Torrejon de Velasco
A railroad bed is planned to run parallel to the above route between Madrid and Seville
The Torrejon de Velasco – Motilla del Palancar section is the first section stretching 223.6km
Toledo and Cuenca and Motilla del Palancar
Talgo 350 (T350) is a very high speed train developed by Patentes Talgo (Tren Articulado Ligero Goicoechea Oriol)
Motilla del Palancar – Albacete section is the most complex section as it crosses the Jucar River
It heads towards the city of Albacete after crossing the river
Motilla del Palancar – Valencia section is a 139km long stretch
starting from the link to Albacete section in Motilla del Palancar
It passes through Cuenca and Valencia provinces
Albacete – Almansa – La Encina – Xativa section is a 138.2km section in which the 100.5km track (in lberian gauge) is adopted for high speed operations
The remaining two parts Albacete – Alpera bypass and Alpera bypass – Nudo de la Encina
Xátiva – Silla Valencia section is a 59km long stretch along the Mediterranean Corridor parallel to the already existing conventional track
The Valencia – Castellon section stretches 55km and will reduce travel times between the two cities by 25 minutes
The 119km long La Encina – Alicante section will run from Encina bypass to Monforte del Cid
One of the branches will head towards Alicante and the other towards Elche
Monforte Del Cid – Murcia / Cartagena section currently operates on Iberian gauge trains until the arrival of high speed trains
Renfe AVE Class Talgo 350 trains are planned to be used on the high speed lines
The train is aerodynamically designed so as to make it comfortably pass through large tunnels at high speeds
The Talgo 350 trains can run at speeds exceeding 300kmph
The Torrejon de Velasco – Motilla del Palancar section includes a 4.7km long tunnel through the Regajal Nature Reserve
has one of the most extensive metro systems anywhere in the world
It also includes a 3.1km long Del Bosque tunnel through the Cuenca mountain range
A station at Cuenca is also planned for this section
Albacete station is being renovated for making it compatible with the high speed rail operation on the Motilla del Palancar – Albacete section
This station will also serve the line that connects to Alicante and Murcia
The Motilla Del Palancar – Valencia section includes 25km of tunnels
11km of viaducts and a station near Requena and Utiel
It also has a 261m long viaduct on the Contreras reservoir
Other viaducts are over the Margo river and A3 road
The line passes through the 7.25km long Cabrera tunnel in the Sierra de la Cabrera mountain ranges
The La Encina – Alicante section includes the 1.4km long Vinalopo viaduct
Barrancadas tunnel (which crosses the Sierra de Camara Mountains) and Umbria de Salinas
The high speed line is equipped with latest communication technologies
It uses GSM-R (Global System for Mobile Communication-Railway) and ERTMS (European Rail Traffic Management System) signalling and safety systems
will install Da Vinci control system on the high speed line
The system will implement centralised traffic control
energy remote control and video surveillance
Having first sanctioned a 160km/h (100mph) maximum speed as recently as 1986
Spain moved quickly to get high-speed rail into operation
It remains committed to long-term plans for the new network

“The situation of the grape campaign at the end of the season is being somewhat disorderly due to alterations in the campaign in other continents
have overlapped with the end of the grape season in Europe,” says Fruklas manager Juan Ramón Pérez
“This context is giving a boost to grape sales
but our sustained effort has allowed us to match that of previous campaigns,” says Juan Ramón
Fruklas is based in the Alicante region of Medio Vinalopó
the region of origin of two out of every three table grapes consumed on New Year's Eve in Spain
“Our own production and that of our partners combined exceeds the 2,000 tons per campaign under the umbrella of the Protected Designation of Origin of Vinalopó
These grapes are cultivated exclusively in the territory that includes the municipal terms of Aspe
The volume of the rest of the fruits distributed by Fruklas (stone fruit
etc.) amounts to about 7,000 tons per year
“The cultivation of seedless grapes is increasingly dominant
We are immersed in a situation in which large breeding companies control and limit the plantation of these grapes with their royalties
This is how they are becoming the main players
relegating producers and consumers to mere spectators of the global grape market,” says the Fruklas manager
“We continue to grow traditional varieties
with and without seeds; varieties consumed for hundreds of years
The consumer pays a fair and reasonable price for these
as they are not burdened by patents or continuous investment expenses subject to changing varietal trends,” says Juan Ramón Pérez
Fruklas cultivates and markets the seeded varieties Moscatel
“It is undeniable that we are suffering environmental changes in the short term that are seriously affecting the crops
That is why we are implementing improvements in the cultivation process
such as the suppression of plastic covers to reduce the environmental impact
or the elimination of polluting products and materials,” says Juan Ramón
the sales prospects for the end of the current campaign and the end of the year are important in the domestic market
“European markets also continue to have a high demand and a clear preference for quality grapes over those imported from other continents,” he says
Fruklas is a production and distribution company in which other producers are integrated
"This makes it possible to expand the range of products marketed
add value to the crops and ensure direct and transparent relations between producers and consumers," says the manager
"We manage both national and international sales from our distribution center in Mercalicante
covering all distribution channels: traditional market
Our exports go mostly to European countries and North America
Germany and Canada as the most frequent destinations
We are also working to expand in the Nordic countries and Eastern Europe," says Juan Ramón Pérez

It rains again in #Torrevieja and we already exceed 40 liters per square meter. The instability remains in the next few hours and, although it stops raining at times, the risk of heavier rains and storms remains. pic.twitter.com/YgVKOhN8Ov
