On Friday 13 September the Montcada i Reixac Barça Supporters' Club (Penya Barcelonista Montcada i Reixac) celebrated its 50th anniversary in the company of the FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta, the director responsible for the Social Area, Josep Ignasi Macià, the president of the Agrupació Barça Jugardors, Juan Manuel Asensi and the futsal first team player Sergio González, a native of the town.
The celebration took place at the Restaurant Can Piqué with a dinner that was also attended by the mayor of Montcada i Reixac, Bartolomé Egea, and the president of the PB Montcada i Reixac, Jordi Gómez. After a welcome from the hosts, president of the ABJ, Juan Manuel Asensi, and Sergio González said a few words before handing out shirts. The speeches were rounded off by the FC Barcelona president, Joan Laporta.
The PB Montcada i Reixac has its headquarters at the number 5 Carrer Colom in the town, which sits nearby to Barcelona. The Supporters' Club has some 150 members and often organises coaches to allow members to travel to Barça games as well as organising charity events at Christmas.

The Rodalies commuter train service in the Barcelona area was severely disrupted on Sunday morning due to the theft of copper cable in Montcada i Reixac
the Spanish government-owned public company in charge of the service
recommends passengers to use an alternative means of transport – while works are underway to fix the issue
there is no forecast on when it will be resolved
No commuter train lines were able to reach Barcelona on Sunday morning
while regional trains are also affected and high-speed trains work as usual
the one connecting the capital with the Maresme county coastal towns in the north
where users can take the metro to arrive in Barcelona
the airport and Vilanova I la Geltrú among others
R4 line is not completing its full route between Vilafranca del Penedès and Manresa through Barcelona – on the one hand
it starts at L'Hospitalet de Llobregat to the east in the Penedès counties
and on the other hand it operates between Cerdanyola del Vallès and Manresa
R3 is not connecting Barcelona with Vic and Puigcerdà
because it starts and finishes at Montcada Ripollet and travels north from there
R7 and R8 have alternative service by road transport
Thus trains cannot run through Barcelona tunnels and between Maçanet
No trains can run between Montcada Bifurcació and Montcada either
the public company in charge of the network and infrastructure
said on Sunday morning that "the damage caused is severe and widespread."
The excess voltage at the Rodalies network due to the theft of copper cable generated minor fires in the Barcelona train tunnels
and the firefighters were working around midday in Sagrera station
according to the civil protection authorities
The major incident coincides with the Catalan election day, and the Catalan vice president, Laura Vilagrà, said that the disruptions affect the right to vote and the turnout.
The situation is "unacceptable," she said, calling on the Spanish transports minister, Óscar Puente, to take prompt action.
Upon voting, the Catalan president, Pere Aragonès, also said that the damage to the commuter train network could affect the right to vote, and added that the issues come after years of "lack of public spending" in the service by the Spanish government.

Chinese manufacturer Chery apparently wants to build cars in Spain
specifically in the former Nissan plant in Barcelona
Chery is close to a deal and could finalise an agreement to start production in Barcelona in the coming days
This was reported by the news agency Reuters
citing information from the Spanish government and the lead negotiator EV Motors
It would be Chery’s first production facility in Europe
The agreement is said to be close to being finalised after a Spanish delegation held promising talks with Chery in China this week
Nissan ceased production at its Barcelona plant at the end of 2021
That was also when the last example of the Nissan e-NV200 electric van rolled off the production line
The Japanese company started producing vehicles there in 1983 with the Nissan Patrol
The production facility in Barcelona consists of three parts – the main plant in Zona Franca
a press shop in Montcada i Reixac and facilities for frame and suspension construction in Sant Andreu de la Barca
who want to develop it into a centre for electric vehicles
EV Motors is said to have “acquired full corporate control of the hub in March” and will thus play a key role in the talks with Chery
The size of the part of the plant that would house Chery is not clear from the article.Chery began selling vehicles in Spain at the beginning of the year
The company has a mix of cars with combustion engines
hybrid drives and purely electric drives in its portfolio
It is not known whether the Spanish authorities are offering Chery the prospect of public aid for local production
Spain plans to launch two tenders this year in which companies can receive a total of 1.7 billion euros in loans and grants for the production of electric vehicles in the country
Chery announced its European launch in 2023 with three brands and a broad drive mix. The carmaker also plans to launch its first model with an electric drive in Germany in the first half of 2024
The manufacturer published initial information on this in January: The Omoda 5 EV is a 4.40-metre-long SUV
with prices set to start at around 37,000 euros

the vast majority of which lightly, after two trains collided at a station just north of Barcelona on Wednesday morning.
The incident occurred at the Montcada i Reixac Manresa station
part of the Rodalies commuter train network
and R12 lines were halted in both directions during the morning as a result of the crash
but as of 10.05 am they were back running with delays
The company activated the emergency protocol for this type of incident in collaboration with Civil Protection and the Medical Emergency System (SEM)
Eighteen ambulances were sent to the site to treat people for injuries
as well as 7 firefighter crews to help with the evacuation of the trains.
39 people were brought to hospitals or health centers for their injuries
There were about 1,300 passengers on board the two trains in total.
The Catalan president Pere Aragonès reacted to the incident via Twitter on Wednesday
demanding "all explanations from [operator] Renfe
[infrastructure manager] Adif and the Spanish government."
"Improving the service in Catalonia is urgent and cannot be postponed," he added.
Fent seguiment de l'accident de Montcada i Reixac i en contacte amb @emergenciescat per conèixer l'evolució dels ferits, a qui desitjo una ràpida recuperació. Calen totes les explicacions de Renfe, Adif i el govern espanyol. Millorar el servei a Catalunya és urgent i inajornable.
Aragonès also explained that he is following the incident and in contact with the emergency services to keep up to date on those injured, to whom he wished a "speedy recovery."
The mayor of Montcada i Reixac, Laura Campos, called the incident "serious and surprising."
"We have been asking Renfe for a while to move forward" with renovating the station, she explained. "Thankfully the 155 people who were hurt today only have minor injuries ... but I do think we need to highlight that what happened today is serious and surprising.
Spain's transport minister Raquel Sánchez defended the rail network and said that some incidents were unavoidable.
"Our rail system works well, our trains work well, but sometimes we cannot avoid accidents or collisions of this nature."
She also warned against relating the incident to the wider management of the Rodalies network.
"What happened today is an accident, a one-off episode that has nothing to do with the work and investments we are making to improve the service."
The Catalan government wants to transfer the management of the Rodalies network to Catalonia and asked the Spanish government on Wednesday to hold a bilateral meeting "quickly."
As well as the incident in Montcada and Reixac, the Catalan railway network recorded another accident on Wednesday, at a level crossing between Reus and El Morell, when a car fell onto the rail track.
The driver, who suffered minor injuries, was able to get out of the vehicle before the train passed, while a passenger was unharmed. The fire department received a call at 12:49 pm after the vehicle left the road and fell from a height of about 5 meters.
Trains between Vila-seca and Reus resumed on one track shortly before 2.45pm.
More than 150 people were lightly injured in a collision between two trains at a station in Barcelona on Wednesday
while five were in less serious condition still
the Medical Emergencies System of Catalonia said on Twitter
Spanish state-owned operator Renfe said a train crashed into another one from behind at the Montcada i Reixac station at around 7:50 a.m
Several people suffered injuries of varying degrees
Both trains run on Renfe’s R4 suburban line
Investigations have started to determine the cause of the accident
Passengers were evacuated from the train in the town of Montcada i Reixac

FCC and Ferrovial joint venture has been awarded a €540M (£467M) contract to construct a tunnel that will carry an existing railway line underground in the municipality of Montcada i Reixac
The project to underground the Rodalies R2 line involves the construction of a 4km tunnel and a third track to increase the railway's capacity
It also involves the construction of a new station for Montcada i Reixac
which will be integrated with the underground railway line
The contract was awarded by Spain’s Railway Infrastructure Administrator (Adif)
The state-owned railway infrastructure company
managed by the Ministery of Development (Mitma)
will oversee the joint venture construct the tunnel and the station
which covers a total length of 130km and passes through Barcelona and its surrounding neighbourhoods
Mitma has said that the project is one of the most ambitious of its wider programme to transform the Catalan railway network
it will also increase safety conditions for residents and railway operations
by eliminating the two level crossings located in this area
Currently there is a high density of vehicle and pedestrian traffic that crosses the R2 lines
The first part of the 4km tunnel will be constructed using reinforced concrete walls
the team will switch to using conventional tunnel excavation methods
The new underground station will be in the vicinity of the current station
The underground line will continue to run in the northerly direction
crossing under the bed of the Ripoll River and the C-33 highway
The contract for the works in Montcada i Reixac was originally put out to tender for €621M
and Vías y Construcciones-Copisa-Azvi Engineering and Services
FCC and Ferrovial joint venture were awarded the highest technical score and the highest economic score
after the bids of two of the other teams were found to be unrealistically low

Cristina Tomàs White | Barcelona
an early childhood teacher here in Barcelona and the quintessential tree-hugger
had a game she used to have us play in the classroom
and plastic bottles were placed atop a cutout of a yellow recycling bin
glass on a green one - this was long before the brown containers for organic waste began to spring up on street corners too
to gauge the state of recycling in Catalonia
And what about us residents - has the impending climate crisis been a call to action
judging by the poorly sorted waste in my local bins
have most people succumbed to apathy?
My first stop was a “punt verd” in the Catalan capital’s Sants district
where I met up with Joan Cañellas from the council’s cleaning and waste management department
Joan opened up after some small chat and jokes about my own clumsy on-screen debut.
are for items that shouldn’t go in recycling bins: old appliances
and electronic devices that we no longer use can be easily recycled or reused,” Joan told me.
Barcelona has a network of “punt verds” scattered across the city - some are permanent neighborhood fixtures
others can be found in the back of large vans or trucks that travel to certain areas on particular days
while other larger ones in the outskirts cater mainly to businesses
Items that cannot be treated by public waste companies
are then taken to authorized private businesses
including job placement charities that sort through old clothes.
which says at least 55% should be prepared for this purpose by 2025
everyone has recycling bins by their house,” Joan tells me
“And it’s getting easier and easier to use the punt verd network.” To him
recycling is a matter of common sense: “We should separate waste and be aware of how much of it we leave behind because natural resources are being depleted.”
in charge of street cleaning and waste collection
This brought me to my second stop: Ecoparc 2 in Montcada i Reixac
one of the Barcelona area's four waste treatment plants
where I met with Pascual Calafell from the metropolitan authority on a very windy day in May.
with Barcelona’s Tibidado telecommunications tower visible far away in the distance
my first impression was that the place is huge - a small city tucked away from our awareness
and yet full of people working day and night to make sure our cities and towns can keep running
My second thought: it doesn’t smell nearly as bad as I was expecting.
Pascual tells me when giving me a tour of the site
is where everything in the brown organic bins
and grey trash bins from the northern Barcelona area ends up.
I’m visibly impressed when he tells me the plant is self-sufficient energy-wise
as it makes biogas out of organic material
and is even able to put electricity back into the grid for public consumption
It also makes compost for the agricultural sector.
I find the site's intricate production line - de-production line
- of conveyor belts with human and machine-aided waste sorting efforts mesmerizing
where items like glass or cardboard are retrieved from the grey bin waste and recycled
But I’m also a bit disappointed when Pascual tells me that only 10% or so of this recyclable material is recovered.
a beer can might be able to be fished out of a sea of non-recyclable trash
as is sending waste to a landfill that will have to be treated to make sure it does not pollute the groundwater and soil or produce harmful greenhouse gasses or to an incinerator.
“The purpose of separate waste collection is to collect items that are valuable” because they can be recycled
besides being two or three times more expensive to retrieve
also noted just how far off the Barcelona area is from meeting the EU targets
When I asked him what he thought the solution was
Taking the trash out “shouldn’t be as anonymous” as it is nowadays
because nobody is held accountable for not recycling things that can be recycled or for putting things in the wrong bin.
Households sort waste far more efficiently
when there are systems are in place where bins can only be opened with special cards
or even with the much-loathed “porta a porta” door-to-door system that was piloted neighborhoods like Sant Andreu or Sarrià and has long existed in other towns
where only certain kinds of waste can be left outside buildings on certain days.
not only is this far more sustainable and better for the environment

The Nissan plants in the Catalan capital's Zona Franca industrial area are set to turn into an electric mobility hub as Australian logistics company Goodman, the winner of a tender to reindustrialize the site, has partnered with the D-hub decarbonization project.
The Zona Franca consortium announced on Wednesday morning that Goodman
which manages a number of spaces in Europe
had formally been granted permission to use the site
It will be used to make industrial electric vehicles for the Zeroid brand as well as Ebro brand electric cars.
Goodman acts as the logistics partner of D-hub
a group made up of around a dozen companies led by QEV and Btech
and was the only company to submit a bid to the tender.
The hub already received a €107.8 million grant from the Spanish government last November as part of the administration's plans to boost the production of electric vehicles.
The Zona Franca Business Consortium (CZFB)
and tourism ministry issued a joint statement saying they "were pleased to be able to start up the activity on the entire site
which is currently using up its unemployment benefits
Japanese carmaker Nissan went public with plans to close its factories in May 2020, at the height of the pandemic, leading to months of strikes and protests before its last vehicle was made there in late 2021.
Around 1,300 former Nissan employees are still waiting to be relocated. All in all, some 2,500 people lost their jobs in the closure.
A reindustrialization committee was created after the company's announcement to shut down with members of the Spanish and Catalan governments, unions, and Nissan to find a substitute.
In the same statement, the CZFB and Spanish and Catalan authorities speak of their "utmost willingness to resolve the problem created by Nissan’s decision to abandon its production activity" in Barcelona as well as in nearby Montcada i Reixac and Sant Andreu.
China's Great Wall Motors was initially a candidate, but an agreement with the carmaker fell through, thus making D-hub the preferred option. Another electric vehicle maker, Silence, has already taken over 61,078 sqm of the plant and hired some former Nissan workers.
The reindustrialization committee is set to ratify the transfer agreement between Nissan and D-hub on February 28.
