Fighting the instinct to save someone without first protecting yourself is one of the hardest adjustments for Maui’s frontline health care workers
a tight-knit group that thrives off community and sacrifice
Before March — when the pandemic began to hit the Valley Isle — putting the patient as priority was a no-brainer for those in the emergency room of Maui’s main hospital
“We are here to save lives,” said Jessica Rozet
“Everyone wants to jump in and save the patient.”
the tables turned quite quickly: the rescuer could now become the victim
a lot of time you don’t even think of your safety because you just want to go in and save the patient,” said Julius Montehermoso
“We have to remind people: In order to keep helping people
you need to keep yourself safe and healthy
If you just jump into any patient that needs help without protecting yourself
next thing you know you are going to be a patient too.”
The Emergency Department of Maui Memorial Medical Center has been the first line of defense against the coronavirus
People with illnesses and injuries as diverse as each individual make their first stop there
every patient must be assessed for COVID-19 and every staffer must suit up for a potential case
“We depend on our staff to identify who is high risk,” Montehermoso said
“They put themselves in the line of fire all the time
we still don’t know who is bringing in what kind of disease.”
frontline health care workers toil for hours in head cover
double mask and other personal protective equipment
Montehermoso said PPE feels like you’re “always swimming.”
“It’s very hot,” he said
No one had to pick straws for tough COVID-19 jobs
“It’s the love of the job and the love of the community that keeps me here,” Rozet said
We do everything to make it better and take care of everyone.”
The community — in and out of the hospital — is also why Jolynn Constantino
“We have such amazing nurses in this hospital,” she said
“It’s just our culture here on Maui — everyone is so caring
They really want to do what’s right by our community and our patients.”
Constantino established the COVID unit back in March
They worked lengthy hours to adapt to changing protocol
Early testing machines had long turnaround times
Patients would show negative results and would later produce positives
“The scariest part in the beginning was just all the unknowns,” Constantino said
She said the COVID unit is unique because of its different levels of care
telemetry nurses and staff in various areas of the hospital collaborated to provide treatment
“Everyone worked well together — from the respiratory therapist to housekeeping to maintenance,” Constantino said
“It really took the entire hospital and all the disciplines to come together to make the unit work.”
The team has been working double duty due to stringent sanitizing measures for COVID — on top of standard cleaning procedures
the work is physical — stripping beds
because the team knows it’s making a difference
“The most rewarding piece is to see we are containing the infection,” she said
And when we see our number of COVID patients go really
We know everyone is getting better.”
highlighted a noticeable shift since the onset of the pandemic
there are 18 respiratory therapists who live and work on Maui
Departments came together to work on procedures and soon
businesses in the community reached out to provide PPE
“Maui Plexiglass provided a lot of face shields and several other businesses provided masks,” she said
nurses and administration continued to adapt
and the community came out and showered us with support
the mood started to change from frustration and fear to solidarity
“I am extremely proud of how our hospital ohana pulled together during this difficult year.”

A day in my life: on the morning of a recent trip to Spain to visit ‘The Furious Gaze’ – a show considering ‘feminism as a source of knowledge that is vital for understanding the world we live in’ – I receive an invitation to a show in the UK that includes one woman out of 15 artists
yet it’s not a show about masculinity: it’s about ‘play’
something the curators have obviously decided women artists know nothing about
On the plane I read that the Spanish Prime Minister
José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero has received a mixed reaction to Spain’s first female-majority cabinet; I also read that the Office for National Statistics has announced that women in their 40s in Britain earn 20 percent less per hour than their male counterparts
I pop into the Guggenheim to see ‘Art in the USA: Three Hundred Years of Innovation’
a survey of ‘the art of a nation struggling to define itself during the first centuries of its existence’
the most significant display of American art ever seen in Spain
Although there are around 200 often brilliant works on display
despite the fact that the show declares itself ‘a composite picture of the American experience – its myths
Rarely have I witnessed such a breathtaking gulf between curatorial intention and actuality
All of which is a lengthy way of explaining why
I welcomed the premise of ‘The Furious Gaze’
Director of the Montehermoso Cultural Centre
Sackler Center for Feminist Art at the Brooklyn Museum in New York – see feminism ‘as an essential framework for investigating visual works that deal with situations of inequality experienced by women’
The show takes its title from a term coined by the Spanish philosopher Amelia Valcárcel
In her text La Política de las mujeres (The Politics of Women
1996) she describes the situation of women who
having reached their 30s assuming that discrimination against women is a thing of the past
have their expectations shattered by the realization of a glass ceilings in the workplace
To accompany ‘The Furious Gaze’ Arakistain also programmed the ‘Contraseñas/Passwords’ project
inviting 12 Spanish and international curators and theorists to ‘document the many lines of criticism and artistic creation based on feminist viewpoints that have been developed in an audiovisual format since the 1960s’
‘The Furious Gaze’ included work by 20 women artists from Afghanistan
the UK and the USA who are around the age of those in Valcárcel’s study – that’s to say
Although most of these artists use gender and sexuality as their starting-point
Highlights included: Andrea Bowers’ installation of a video and posters (the latter made especially for this exhibition)
which records 30 men and women reading letters sent to 1960s’ abortion rights activists; the Afghan artist Lida Abdul’s video of the artist washing an Afghan rug with an ice-block; Italian artist Lara Favaretto’s photograph of men holding up a donkey (Mondo alla Rovescia
and her mysterious installation Prima (2005)
which comprised five air canisters and childrens’ party whistles; and the Japanese artist Yurie Nagashima’s deadpan photograph of a heavily pregnant woman giving the viewer an adamant finger – an unambiguous response to Nobuyoshi Araki’s hugely popular photographs of Japanese women in bondage
Humour bubbled near the surface of many of the works
including the Australian artist Tracey Moffat’s hilarious video collage of moments from classic films exploring relationships between men and women
and the US artist Kathe Burkhart’s super-camp series of paintings ‘Liz Taylor’ (2002)
I kept returning to two slapstick videos by the Spanish artist Cristina Lucas: Rousseau y Sophie (2007) is her response to Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s theories about women as expounded in his book Emile: or
in which the French philosopher wrote of men and women: ‘One ought to be active and strong
the other passive and weak […] it follows that woman is made specially to please man.’ Lucas’ riposte
mocking and thumbing their noses at Rousseau’s statue in a park in Madrid to the accompaniment of a brass band
Opposite this video was Tú también puedes caminar (You Can Walk Too
2006) Lucas’ retort to the passage in Virginia Woolf’s essay A Room of One’s Own (1929) in which Woolf quotes the words of a prominent music critic: ‘Of Mlle
Germaine Tailleferre one can only repeat Dr Johnson’s dictum […] “Sir
a woman’s composing is like a dog’s walking on his hind legs
but you are surprised to find it done at all.”’ Lucas’ film shows a series of remarkable dogs
Arakistain has made it clear that while this is the first major show he has curated at this extraordinary space
he intends feminism to continue to be integral to future exhibitions at the centre
This is as it should be: women represented fairly not as the exception but as a matter of course
Jennifer Higgie is a writer who lives in London
Her book The Mirror and the Palette – Rebellion
Revolution and Resilience: 500 Years of Women’s Self-Portraits is published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson
and she is currently working on another – about women
A new play by Gillian Solvo highlights the lives of those who survived the devastating fire
reaffirms the Malagasy artist as the star of the show
With the spotlight at the Venice Biennale falling all-too-often on the 30 national pavilions in the Giardini
writer Jennifer Higgie asks whether this 19th-century format still makes sense
These are the top shows to see in January – from an extensive display of Indigenous Australian stories in Plymouth to a joint Renée Green retrospective in Berlin
the paradigm-shifting show presents more than 300 paintings
weavings and films in blazing celebration of the profoundly rich culture
19 artists mine local histories and draw out contradictions in the area’s development
Jennifer Higgie visits Plymouth’s new museum to explore its rich collection spanning centuries
The artist’s exhibition at Chisenhale Gallery shows how entangled and dependent our lives are upon one another
the Lithuanian artist duo open their first UK institutional solo with a quasi-operating room featuring a giant mechanical doctor
At her first institutional solo exhibition in Sweden at Moderna Museet
the artist’s sculptures reference Marcel Duchamp and evocations of pleasure and knowledge
This year’s edition focuses on historical relations of resistance and liberation which survive beyond the archive
the artist’s readymade sculptures prompt a strange empathy between viewer and object
A new book by Ian Penman grapples with the filmmaker’s gargantuan appetites
impossible productivity and heartbreaking melancholy
is stripped down to its bare bones to reveal the play’s central spirit

Twenty-four Astera AX1 Pixel Tubes were utilised for one of 20 stunning site-specific lighting installations created by individual artists for the first UMBRA Light Festival in Vitoria-Gastiez
vibrant and highly multicultural historical capital city and seat of government of the Basque Autonomous Community in Alava
visitors and lighting enthusiasts from all over Spain
Europe and much further afield a chance to redefine the city and see it in some new
UMBRA was organised by ARGIA 3 Asociación Cultural and curated by a new collective comprising Rafael Gallego
founding partner of AGi Architects and stage lighting designer
and founder of Studio & Light Carlos Torrijos – three individuals
They made the AX1’s available which were utilised by Carlos Torrijos for his own work at the festival
“Buscando la Vida” was staged in the former water reservoir next to the Palacio Montehermoso
a 16th century stately Renaissance building – one of two special underground spaces that became immersive light works during the event
The Palacio was linked to the ancient Depósito de Aguas (Water tank) by an underground corridor added in 1885
Since 1991 Palacio Montehermoso has served as a cultural centre for the city and region
and during UMBRA this extensive underground corridor with its imposing vaulted architecture was opened to the public allowing them to access the 1.365 m² large hall of the former water reservoir
Carlos Torrijos’ light-and-sound piece was based on vertical LED lines soaring from the floor
created with the AX1s stationed at strategic points around the vast area
Their energy-conscious wireless battery powered operation was ideal
These illuminated the massive structural arches which were a masterpiece of Renaissance engineering
The movement of the light up and down the Astera tubes was inspired by the rise and fall of the water in the tank
Reemphasising the relationship between lighting and physical space
the work was also aimed at getting an emotional response from guests in terms of extracting the light everyone has within them from the ‘silence’ that is so often the norm
The thought-provoking ambience created as people were bathed in light was intended to encourage the existential process of pulling positive energy from inner darkness
searching the soul to find new meanings and ideas
Emphasising the form and functionality of the room – a dark
closed off space – with light also helped explain the history and relevance of the location
Carlos chose to use the Pixel Tubes for the work because he wanted a clean and pure light in an expedient housing and something that was expediently packaged that would blend unobtrusively into this extraordinary environment
The AX1 produced large amounts of light required but occupied minimal space
It was the first time he had used an Astera product and was extremely impressed with the results
reckoning that the AX1s are an “original and different” light source with “great possibilities” for light art installations like this
and for more conventional entertainment based applications
He’d like to use the Tubes again and experiment with having greater control over the effects and operation for the next work
“I loved the reflection of the colours on the architecture and the dynamism of the actual light emanating from the Tubes” he commented
EES themselves were delighted to be involved in the first of what will hopefully become an annual event
Having recently added Astera to their product portfolio which features other premium brands
they like Astera’s diversity and the many new possibilities their ingenious wireless technology brings for lighting projects
The first UMBRA Light Festival was a massive success
pulling many people into Vitorio- Gastiez and creating a real buzz of excitement and creativity
and boosting an appreciation of the many unifying effects of lighting on social interaction

This is reflected on the websites of the main hotel chains operating in Cuba and by tour operators and travel agents who bring vacationers to the island
the island’s authorities seek to reinforce the presence of the country’s travel industry in the main markets
That’s why the 2nd and 5th of May meetings in Havana will be a very special moment
this time dedicated to culture and heritage as significant elements
With Havana as the venue and cultural heritage as the center of attention
the Fair should have a good turnout following the line of the gradual recovery of the country’s tourist activity that in January had an upturn despite the complexities that persists
as pointed out in a message from the Gaviota Group
this is the most representative company of the recreational activity in Cuba and therefore it is expected to have strong proposals and presence in the May event
registered a record of more than 7,500 tourism industry professionals from 53 countries
comparatively (in 2022 it took place again in Varadero)
it is expected that this time it will attract an abundant representation of international tourism businessmen
the fair gathered 6,000 participants from 54 countries
38 airlines and 254 tour operators and travel agencies
one of the great urban treasures of the Caribbean
Gaviota has been working for years to expand its reception capacities and reinforcement of a hotel product to honor the so-called Wonder City
nearly a thousand of them in the Historic Center
where the Habaguanex Hotels are concentrated
the Hotel Marqués de Cárdenas de Montehermoso
FitCuba 2023 will focus precisely on the island’s enormous heritage
in an additional effort to promote and diversify the destination

WITH ESPORTS MAKING waves in the Philippines
alongside the National Youth Commission has decided to introduce an esports version of the renowned student-athlete sporting event in the Philippines
which follows a similar approach to its traditional sporting counterpart
On their official Facebook page
the league asked the community on what games they wish to be featured
with Riot Games' League of Legends topping the charts (though they later published their statement regarding the polls)
Perhaps this project could help further expound the local esports scene
which is dominated by Mobile Legends: Bang Bang
told Spin.ph that the project serves a bigger purpose
Montehermoso realized that the vast majority of opportunities in esports mostly stem from Luzon and this could be highlighted by the numerous big time events that took place in Manila
"Why not create a platform to provide more opportunities to esports athletes outside NCR?" he started
"One pain point I have as an esports enthusiast in the Philippines is that most opportunities are emphasized in Luzon
although there are a lot of esports initiatives in Visayas and Mindanao
there are few activities or events where we can show our talents."
Then he looked back and realized that players from Visayas are forced to look for opportunities by traversing to Luzon
"Most of the brands or most of the organizing bodies are found in Luzon or have more resources that they can provide in these highly populated areas...And if I were correct
we have some Ilonggo players who migrated to Luzon for them to be able to join teams
He added: "Hopefully through E-Palarong Pambansa
our esports athletes can get the support they need in the local level."
But the project doesn't just aim to expound on the local esports scene as it likewise aims to build a more sustainable grassroots system through the aid of the local government
With E-Palarong Pambansa going online, perhaps more opportunities could be provided not only to aspiring pro players, but also to organizers and other parties. So far, Montehermoso has been busy developing the scene in Iloilo and he hopes to further reach other cities
why not have other cities and municipalities emulate what we did?" reflected Montehermoso
He added: "And for them to be able to access the government support here
have more legitimacy on what they do and for these organizations to have more sustainable and stable esports ecosystems
for them to be able to really create career opportunities for esports enthusiasts and to those who wish to continue their career paths in the esports scene in the PH."
where esports orgs are formed per city where they receive an overwhelming level of support from the government and investors
"The plan is...once these esports organizations in the cities and municipalities are created
we will provide them the resources for them to be able to ask the support from local businesses and government units
and once they’ve established themselves
they can look for local sponsors in the area."
we believe that it will be more sustainable and more stable for them
since it’s easier for them to pitch that organization they’re in because they’re representing their hometowns at the National level."
"It’s also a great way for them to look for local partners and have more ‘bragging rights’ per se in terms that they’re not really competing at the local level but they’re the ones championing their hometowns in the bigger leagues and hopefully through this
they’ll get the continuous support/funding they need."
And for this vision to reach its fullest potential
the project taps into the National Youth Commission's influence
"We want to see more engagements with the local youth
that’s why we partnered with the National Youth Commission and I’m glad they created an advice for you to supervise the SKs and the cities
for them to support the esports initiatives and create an esports coordinator who will be our contact person for this event," revealed Montehermoso

The Maui Memorial Medical Center is the recipient of the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines–Target: Stroke Honor Roll-Elite Quality Achievement Award
The award was presented at the association’s International Stroke Conference 2015 and recognizes the hospital’s commitment and success in ensuring that stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized
MMMC is one of 559 hospitals to be recognized on the Target: Stroke Honor Roll
among the nearly 1,000 hospitals given quality achievement awards at the conference
To receive the Target: Stroke Honor Roll-Elite award
hospitals must meet quality measures developed to reduce the time between the patient’s arrival at the hospital and treatment with the clot-buster tissue plasminogen activator
the only drug approved by the US Food and Drug Administration to treat ischemic stroke
If given intravenously in the first three hours after the start of stroke symptoms
hospital representatives say tPA has been shown to significantly reduce the effects of stroke and lessen the chance of permanent disability
at least 75% of the hospital’s ischemic stroke patients have received tPA within 60 minutes of arriving at the hospital
and this award demonstrates our commitment to ensuring patients receive care based on nationally-respected clinical guidelines,” said Carol Clark of MMMC Communications in a press release
“MMMC is dedicated to improving the quality of stroke care and the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines Stroke helps us achieve that goal,” she said
MMMC has also met specific scientific guidelines as a Primary Stroke Center
featuring a comprehensive system for rapid diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients admitted to the emergency department
“We are pleased to recognize Maui Memorial Medical Center for their commitment to stroke care,” said Deepak L
national chairman of the Get With The Guidelines steering committee and Executive Director of Interventional Cardiovascular Programs at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School
“Studies have shown that hospitals that consistently follow Get With The Guidelines quality improvement measures can reduce length of stay and 30-day readmission rates and reduce disparities in care.”

MANILA, Philippines – The Lakas-Magdalo alliance in Cavite is set to file a string of complaints against Senior Superintendent Glen Dumlao over alleged acts of harrassment against its members and supporters
was implicated in the 2001 Dacer-Corbito double murder case
He resurfaced from under the Aquino administration and has been named head of the Regional Public Safety Battalion of the Calabarzon police
He is a known protegé of Sen Panfilo Lacson
whose son Jay is running for vice governor under the Liberal Partyy (LP) against Jolo Revilla of Lakas-Magdalo
has submitted a letter of complaint to PNP Police Director-General Alan Purisima due to Dumlao’s involvement in the following incidents:
a group of men in fatigues went to his house and introduced themselves as members of PNP
The men accused him of organizing an armed group
a group of armed men in civilian clothes went looking for Romeo Montehermoso Jr.
but the men insisted to enter the compound
prompting a caretaker to call the wife of Montehermoso
The men was told to address their concerns to the barangay hall
the armed men also went looking for Montehermoso’s brother
Nelson’s wife refused to let the armed men enter
The men also went to the house of Alvin Mojica
executive assistant of re-electionist Gov Jonvic Remulla
Panelo said a group of armed men led by Sr Supt Glen Dumlao and Romeo Baleros stormed the house of Raymond Equillos
chief of staff of Mayor Jun Sagun of Trece Martires City
but Dumlao’s men “sprayed the house with gunfire,” which injured 2 people
He also added that valuables like mobile phones
and wrist watches went missing after the raid
Equillos and 5 others were arrested for illegal possession of firearms but were eventually released for “lack of probable cause,” Panelo said
the rogues in uniform are in cahoots with certain political groupings or personalities in implementing a political program designed to destroy the chances of the Lakas-Magdalo political party candidates from winning the elections,” the lawyer said
Remulla and Revilla will be facing off Liberal Party bets 3rd district Cavite Rep Erineo “Ayong” Maliksi and his running mate
“Kasi kung magiging parehas at tahimik lang ang eleksyon sa Cavite
tiyak na wala nang talo sina Jonvic Remulla at Jolo Revilla (If the polls in Cavite would be fair and peaceful
Jonvic Remulla and Jolo Revilla will certainly win the elections)
Panelo said they will also file grave coercion
and even sexual harassment charges against the cops
Masks are not only for Carnival nor are bicycles only for the summer
which is west of Madrid and bordering with neighboring Portugal
there are unique celebrations that wander around the use of masks: the “Jarramplas”
the “Negritos de San Blas” that revive every year in Piornal
All are traditional festivals that also welcome the new year
because they are celebrated in January and February
One of the common denominators of all three is the use of masks
disguises or painted faces with heavy make-up
They also combine ancestral rites that make them an essential visit for any curious traveler
The calendar of the celebrations with masks in Extremadura begins in the highest town of the region
a strong Captain raises the flag and people sing at dawn
a character dressed in a costume full of multicolored flowing ribbons and covered with a conical mask
He receives a shower of turnips when the neighbors spot him
because it is said that is he represents a cattle thief
But the truth is that this is a Fiesta of National Tourist Interest and is the pride of the whole town
People have formed a long waiting list that grows every year
This is a genuine ritual of the Valley of the Jerte that attracts visitors from all over the country and has represented Extremadura in the “Festival de Mascaras Ibéricas” (Festival of Iberian Masks) shared by Spain and Portugal
At this multinational festival the “Carantoñas de Acehúche” also represents us
who have their Festivity on the 20th of January
Acehúche is a small town in the Province of Cáceres
It is fills with characters with heads covered with monstrous masks with or with out animal skins; and can be decorated with teeth
animal ears or peppers but what they do no lack is a dry branch of wild olive tree in each hand
It is said that this represent the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian
when it comes past them in a procession between songs
Before the appearance of the “Carantoñas” the maidens have already decorated the streets
they are dressed in traditional costumes and are called “Reagoras”
their responsibility is to water the rosemary that is used during the procession of the Saint
a huge Carantoña with an immense cowbell on its neck
All the other Carantoñas flee scared and participants go to the house of the butler for refreshments of wine and sweets
This is a festival of Touristic interest in Extremadura
those who come to the scene are the “Negritos de San Blas”
who do not wear masks but go around the town with their faces tinted in black
They dance to the rhythm of tambourines and at the directions of the “Palotero” who looks like the buffoon of the celebration because of his unusual clothing which contrast greatly with the other participants
who are dressed with the typical attire of Montehermoso
The festivity starts on the night of the candles
with washed faces and it considered the big day
