of the Helena Husky Soccer Camp as a generation of former campers teaches the future Huskies of tomorrow HELENA – Helena High School marked a decade of pouring into the local youth soccer community with another successful year of the Helena Husky Soccer Camp from June 3-7 “We’ve had a great week,” Helena head girls soccer coach Clif Naron said “We’ve got 147 campers out here this year and the weather has cooperated We’re out here on the turf and everybody’s getting a little skill and getting a little fun.” The camp provided a mix of drills to learn soccer skills and fun games to get the campers excited about playing soccer Leaning into Helena’s identity as the Huskies the campers were divided into “packs” by grad level Their age pack determined what skills they learned throughout the week with younger kids learning more basic skills and older kids learning the advanced skills that will prepare them for higher levels of competitive soccer we’re doing basic cone drills and touch stuff and at the highest one-on-one close skill drills,” Naron said it just depends on the age that they’re at or how detailed they’re going.” Naron doesn’t want the skill development to take away from the fun of the camp The campers play multiple games throughout the day get daily popsicles during the much-anticipated treat time and end their week with a visit from Kona Ice “We’re going to drill down and get you some skills but we want you to get out here and get engaged and really get interested and want to play soccer so that we can grow you to want to be here when you become a middle schooler or high schooler.” The varsity boys and girls soccer players took charge as pack leaders to guide the kids through the drills Naron has seen players go from campers themselves to leading other campers as pack leaders because of their great experiences at the camp “It’s really cool because this is our 10th anniversary of camp and a lot of our players were once our campers and they all want to be in charge,” Naron said “They want to be the leader because they remember being a little kid and being here at camp and it’s so cool to see that connection made.” Naron believes that starting the kids out young at the camp and making the game fun for them helps lead to a long love of soccer That connection with the community that Helena has built shows in how many kids come back year after year “It really is making that connection with the community and I think that’s where we’ve seen success but certainly within our program of getting these kids when they’re young making sure they’re interested in soccer “Most of our campers come back two or three years and we see them over and over and over again until they age out they start playing with clubs and then with Helena Middle School and Helena High School representing their city while playing the game that they love While soccer’s meteoric rise in Helena and across Shelby County can be attributed to many factors Naron knows the camp has done its job when he looks across the dressing room and sees many former campers across both the girls and boys teams we had 23 kids try out for 22 spots and only a handful of them had ever played soccer before I got out and got kind of involved in the community started going to the Saturday city league games,” Naron said there just wasn’t that much soccer here then We don’t owe all of our success to summer camp but I feel like this offering has certainly helped us capture interest in soccer in the Helena community and helped grow our program beyond a doubt 60% of our players on the boys and girls side came to our camp Just one AAC game is on Monday’s college basketball schedule That contest is the Wichita State Shockers squaring… The Memphis Grizzlies (38-22) spending the last four years as the offensive coordinator for Reedy High School in Frisco Naron will be just an hour's drive to the northwest to lead the Whitefaces Naron also becomes the program's first new coach in 18 years after former coach Don DeLozier stepped away from the sidelines into a new role with the school district Although Naron will be a new face in charge things haven't changed all that much once you peek inside the Hereford football team DeLozier moved up the ladder to become the executive director of operations while a majority of the coaching staff stayed intact.  "There's a lot of continuity with a lot of those guys being here," Naron said "They've helped me out a lot with my transition we've got quite a few returning starters on defense and offense "The transition will be a lot easier for them because we'll be using the same terminology Those guys will be ready to rock and roll." And what Hereford may need is a new spark heading into the 2021 season the Whitefaces finished at the bottom of the District 3-4A Division I standings without a win scoring just 20 points and allowing 150 against and going 3-7 overall.  The district itself went through a bit of turnover this summer Todd Winfrey was promoted to head coach at Canyon following the retirement of Blake Bryant and Cody Robinson took over at Pampa meaning Aaron Dunnam at Dumas is the only returning head coach in the district "It'll be exciting because it's the first time that we see each other with all these different schools," Naron said "We'll be seeing some new things but by the time we get to week 7 when we play each other we'll have seen each other play and know what everybody else is about." Naron's time as an offensive coordinator in Frisco could see him provide a catalyst to the Whieface's offensive production That will be aided by the return of wide receivers Noah Brown and Braedyn Mendoza Brown recorded 473 yards and seven touchdowns while Mendoza's 6-foot-3 185-pound frame will be a strong physical asset in the red zone going forward Bryson Lopez will lead the rushing game after recording north of 800 yards last season The one question that needs to be answered is who will start at quarterback to target the two Whiteface receivers but he did disclose a senior athlete might be the front runner and Naron is hoping to breathe some new life on that side of the ball The Whitefaces allowed 150 points in district play last year and 42.1 points per game against throughout all of last season. Linebacker and kicker Jose Solorzano will anchor the defense that hopes to improve on years past Juan Nava and Zevan Gonzales in defense to start the new era at Hereford but with a similar staff as last year and some promising pieces on the squad this season could see a turn of the page for the program.  "Everybody can agree that coach DeLozier did a lot of great things for this program and the community," Naron said "We're just looking to grow and build on the great things that he and his staff did over the last 18 years." Hereford and Naron are ready to take the next step following a 6-5 overall record and a third-place District 3-4A Division I finish that ended with a bi-district round exit from the postseason in 2021 That progression will depend on how the fresh faces starters perform when the lights turn on Friday nights There is an open competition at many spots on the Hereford depth chart which includes quarterback that was vacated by the graduation of Gerardo Garcia The one signal-caller on the roster with varsity experience is senior Carlos Duran who will have to compete with a few underclassmen during early practices to solidify his spot as the new starter "That quarterback position is going to be one of the first that we have to solidify," Naron said the new Hereford starting quarterback will have four new starters on the offensive line The lone returning starter is senior Dayton Delozier ― a 6-foot-7 260-pound behemoth who's been a three-year starter in the trenches Hereford’s backfield will be comprised of senior Tommy Suarez who had the most rushing yards (300) and receiving yards (288) of any returning playmaker for the Herd and junior Tony Salazar ― who saw valuable action in the final three games of last season The duo will team up as a pair of versatile backs in Naron’s multiple spread offense Hereford’s defense will have its two anchors in the middle returning for the 2022 season in senior inside linebackers Eric Lucio and Jose Solorzano The pairing combined for 146 total tackles and five tackles for loss last season Solorzano is considered the leader of the defense and has been a three-year starter in the middle of the second level Lucio is a force in his own right as he added two sacks two forced fumbles and one interception to his personal stat totals last season He has the size and athleticism to cover the field in the passing game as well as the pass-rushing ability to come off the edge Those two will combine their mixture of size and strength with the long and hard-hitting senior free safety Zevan Gonzales captaining the secondary "Eric and Jose in the middle really help us on defense because they run the defense," Naron said "Those three guys are the leaders of our defense by their position to begin with Them being seniors and having a lot of experience is going to make up for having brand new starters at our corner positions and defensive line positions." sophomore Jeremiah Martinez returns to anchor the defensive line following an outstanding freshman season that included 13 tackles and two sacks prior to an injury “He's really grown a lot over the offseason and we'll have him back healthy," Naron said "We're hoping he'll be somewhat of a leader on the D-line Even though he's only going to be a sophomore he'll be the lone guy with starting experience out there." The new look District 3-4A Division I includes a gauntlet of strong football programs in Canyon Pampa and former Class 5A D-II program Randall Hereford dropped their district road games to Dumas (45-0) and Canyon (40-16) last season while defeating Pampa big at home (56-23) The last time the Whitefaces made it past the opening round of the playoffs was in 2018 when they advanced all the way to the regional semifinals Naron needs to see his new starters progress throughout the season as they build valuable team chemistry “We have to play consistent on defense with some of those young guys being able to stop the run up front and get our defense off the field," he said "It's also going to come down to if we can gel as a team with the new faces and the few returning starters that we have We have to be consistent week-in and week-out and play strong the whole season."
