Four-day Event on Reservation is a Celebration of Culture and Heritage Among Imperial County Tribes and Beyond
usually quiet township within the Fort Yuma Quechan Indian Reservation erupted with fireworks
and vibrant cultural displays as part of Quechan Indian Days
where the Colorado River marks the border between California and Arizona
has always (“since the beginning,” as the elders say) been the home of the Quechan (pronounced KWIT-san) tribe
indigenous people who thrived as harvesters and farmers (Imperial Valley’s first)
and as practicers of a spirituality tied to the desert
life in the Valley was about respecting the land
collecting arrow weed to build homes and perform burning cleanses
squash and corn using the then-overflowing Colorado River waters
which were the sole and sacred reprieve from the desert’s heat — the same waters that
would flood the entirety of where Imperial County’s centralized cities reside today
leaving a vast lake of fresh water brimming with fish and visited by countless birds
Cahuilla and Cocopah tribes (the tribes of Imperial County) gathered at its sacred shorelines to trade resources and perform burnings and dances for their spiritual ceremonies
Quechan Indian Days honors the rich and often neglected native heritage of the American southwest and parts of Mexico
a heritage which has seen itself compromised since the colonization of this region began in the 1850s
Attendees and performers ranged from California and Yuma residents to tribal members from local Quechan
as well as members of other tribes as far north as Fort Mojave and as far east as the White Mountain Apache tribe of New Mexico
Descendants of indigenous people from parts of Mexico were also present
highlighting how several of these tribal nations (and specifically Quechan
and Kumeyaay nations) have familial and cultural ties that go beyond the borders that today mark the United States and Mexico
And just as these cultural ties between indigenous people of the U.S
and Mexico are reflected in their shared culture and how their traditional territories cross the U.S.-Mexico border
it was also reflected in the food offered at the celebration
with food stands offering Native American fry bread and good old American barbecue
on Thursday with what to many was the main attraction: the 2024 Miss Quechan Pageant at Paradise Casino
young indigenous girls from the Quechan tribe compete for the title of Miss Quechan in a contest focused on finding a young female tribal leader who is representative of the tribe’s cultural values and who serves as a tribal role model for other young native girls to follow.
The pageant also includes a portion where contestants must introduce themselves in their native Quechan tongue
also highlighting the event’s aim at preserving a culture and language that is less and less practiced as the years go by
The young contestants also have the opportunity to showcase the beautiful traditional regalia gifted to them by family and friends
including skirts and dresses in lavish colors and intricate beadwork from head to toe
the title of Miss Quechan 2024-2025 went to 21-year-old Ravine Nerva
2022 graduate and wrestling state champion from Kofa High School in Yuma
who later enjoyed being paraded down a float for her community to see her proudly displaying her new title on the morning of Saturday
following a Friday filled with Quechan language workshops
traditional native games and fun tournaments for adults and children alike
Also honored at the Miss Quechan Pageant was Aubrey Palone
who was named First Attendant Miss Quechan 2024-2025
Ravine and Palone were interviewed as they rested at Quechan Stomp Grounds (a plot of land below the site of the historic Fort Yuma where vendors
singers and dancers gathered for Saturday and Sunday’s activities) following a round of traditional singing and dancing
where they reflected on the event and the personal meaning that it carries for them
Nerva explained how events like Quechan Indian Days always give her nothing but positive feelings
describing how fun it is to be around so many family members
and tribal members from near and far.
One of her favorite parts of an event like this is the singing and dancing
which she said always brings up her spirit since these cultural practices carry great meaning for her
she also explained how the vendors always bring amazing things to check out and buy
her favorite being the beaded native jewelry
Johnson and Brenner families of the Quechan tribe and has Quechan
explained she has been dancing to traditional songs since she was a baby
and that an event like Quechan Indian Days is always a good chance to catch good energy
since good people from all over come and bring their culture and spirituality with them
which they are happy and proud to share.
Palone also mentioned that what warms her heart the most is seeing her community come together
as well as the encouragement that youth receive by being surrounded by their culture and songs
which they are always encouraged to carry on
describing how since childhood her family always told her the stories and meaning behind the dance movements
which led to a deep spiritual connection to her culture that she hopes all Quechan youth can see one day
Also gracing the parade and event with her presence (with her float having won the second-place trophy) was Maritza Barley
a young Quechan and Cocopah pageant contestant and student at UCLA where she is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in nursing and where she was recently crowned Miss UCLA Powwow Princess 2024
Barley stated that she loves pageants because she admires the bravery that it takes for young native women to come out in full regalia and speak their native language and do their culture proud.
she echoed Palone’s point that the most essential thing at events of this kind is for the youth to be immersed in their culture and see it really come to life
“We all have our everyday lives and our jobs
often away from our community and culture,” she explained
“so events like this are important because they ground us back into our traditions and our heritage
so that we never forget who we truly are as native people.” After this powerful and incisive statement
Barley also showed her humorous and lighthearted nature
as she explained that one of the best parts of Quechan Indian Days is catching the tamale lady before she runs out of tamales
and games like tug-of-war and volleyball were prominent attractions for the Quechan youth to attend from Friday to Sunday
there was a noticeable concerted effort from adults and elders to always refocus the message back to heritage
Above the smell of frybread and the sound of fireworks
traditional songs made an insistence of being practiced and appreciated
The event featured a range of traditional songs and dances from tribes like the fire-circling White Mountain Apache Crown Dancers and the dances of the Yaqui from Sonora
children and adults were all invited to participate and practice singing bird songs (sacred songs shared by tribes all across the Colorado River and down to Baja California)
Kumeyaay Pi Pah songs (warrior songs performed with a tin can rattle)
and Quechan Akhil songs (harvest songs) and Urave (lightning) songs (songs that tell the story of the journey of the Quechan people from Spirit Mountain in Nevada down to current Quechan land)
were kind enough to be interviewed after they gave their best during a round of bird songs alongside seasoned singers
they did provide their personal accounts on how they first picked up singing
all three explaining how it was family members who were also singers and dancers who encouraged them to pick up the tradition.
who did explain he was from the Jose family of the Quechan tribe
explained how he was sent away from home for years when he was enrolled in a Native American boarding school in Oregon but said that returning home only made him want to embrace his culture even more
and I am happy and proud to carry it on,” he said while holding his gourd rattle
Though they explained how they are still learning and still make mistakes sometimes while performing
they have seen how important it is to keep the culture alive
they all claimed the fry bread was another great reason to attend
84-year-old Quechan tribal elder and cultural bearer
as well as an environmental activist who has been involved in fights against invasive mining and land development in Imperial County
as well as fights in opposition to lithium extraction
This conversation came after he did a round of Pi Pah songs
for he felt that a young boy by his side was really understanding the songs
As he sat under a ramada made of arrow-weed (known as “va matakyaaly” in the Quechan language)
Arrow-Weed imparted wisdom on how absent events like this are in the broader Imperial County
referring to a tribe who were the first to descend into Imperial Valley after the vast lake’s waters had dried out
and who lived where cities like El Centro and Brawley exist today
Nobody studies the history of who was there first
We had our own language and culture.”
Arrow-Weed’s concerns with native cultural erasure in Imperial County
is why he feels so many environmentalist threats are posed in the area — for he sees the place as one where
people have almost fully lost the sacred connection to the land that is necessary to keep things in harmony
Although concerned that Quechan Indian Days may have had too much in the way of distractions like games and tournaments
Arrow-Weed still maintained that it is important for the people to be present at events of this sort
and he also noted that the most important thing for native people to hold onto is their language
but they don’t really know what they’re saying,” he explained
so one needs to know the language.” After these remarks
Arrow-Weed agreed with previous statements that the native youth of today do offer a lot of hope
which is why they need spaces where their culture surrounds and nurtures them
In his hopes of seeing indigenous culture much more acknowledged and honored in the rest of Imperial County and not just in its outskirts
Preston Arrow-Weed chose to give the Valley community a story to close this report — a story thousands of years old that tells of how all knowledge of the world came to people here:
there was a giant snake that swam around the Colorado River here near Yuma (but the Colorado River’s real name is Xaavíly)
but I’m sure that with all the dams they put up in the river now
the snake would have a harder time getting around today
the ancestors said that the snake emerged somewhere out near the Salton Sea
and you can still find some of its remains out near Salton Sea today
and that smoke carried all the knowledge of the world that the people used to learn how to live.”
And that is how life came to be in Imperial Valley

LAPORTE — A collection of antique cars was among the ruins of a fire that destroyed a pole barn they were stored in
The five vehicles belonged to a now heartbroken LaPorte County couple who raced over to the electric overhead door of the burning pole barn to try to drive them out
because of a power outage from the strong Monday night storms that passed through the area
“There was just no way of getting them out,” said Nerva Kraus
often took the five beloved vehicles to car shows and on cruises during the summer
Kraus said they had all of the other vehicles
“A lot of sentiment right there," she said
told investigators he went inside the pole barn Tuesday afternoon and started his generator to supply power to his home during the lingering outage
before he could wheel it out of the 50 X 80 structure
Police said flames from the generator caught one of the inside walls of the pole barn on fire
Kraus ran out of the structure to grab a fire extinguisher and returned to find the flames spreading too rapidly
Nerva Kraus said they went to open the overhead door of the pole barn to start driving the vehicles out of the structure
It was at that moment their panicking minds realized there was no electricity to power the door
They failed in their attempts to physically open the door and watched helplessly as the flames quickly engulfed the structure
There was another 1957 Chevy Bel Air inside along with two 1955 Chevy Bel Airs
who seemed numb in disbelief over the loss
said all of the now-charred vehicles they took turns driving were in great shape
Police said the value of each car was estimated at anywhere from $20,000 to more than $100,000
Nerva Kraus doesn’t believe any of the fire damaged cars are restorable but she’ll leave that up to her insurance company to decide
“They’re all looking in pretty bad shape," she said
No light was shed on what caused the generator to catch fire
The Krauses were among the thousands of NIPSCO customers still without power Wednesday from a storm producing over 100,000 outages in the utility’s company’s northern Indiana service area
Though there were still some outages listed on NIPSCO's website early Friday evening

A new treatment approach helps people with IBS symptoms like stomach pain
bloating and diarrhea find relief through a combination of dietary and stress management strategies
If you have unexplained episodes of diarrhea, constipation or gastrointestinal distress you could be one of the more than 25 million people in the U.S. with irritable bowel syndrome
your doctor may steer you toward a new kind of treatment that integrates diet change with tools to work through the stress that often triggers symptoms
Rather than relying only on medications that mask symptoms
doctors are prescribing a combination of diet counseling with therapies
(They will first run tests to rule out conditions such as colitis
"There has been a real sea change in terms of managing patients," says William Chey, a gastroenterologist at the University of Michigan who has documented the benefits of integrative care
somebody to help the patient to understand how he or she can help themselves."
But most gastroenterology practices don't have a registered dietician
psychologist or stress-management professional on staff
so finding this integrative treatment isn't easy
doctors have started to recommend virtual support – apps – that let people access stress management and dietary strategies
Some apps are FDA authorized and require a doctor's prescription; others can be downloaded on your own
Here's what to know about the science behind the integrative approach and how the new apps work
Let's start with the basic re-set in thinking about IBS. It's not just a problem of the gut. Scientists now know that disturbances in the way the nervous system, brain and gut interact can cause changes that trigger or worsen IBS symptoms
"There's a continuous feedback loop between the brain and the gut," explains Suzanne Smith, a nurse practitioner at UCLA's Integrative Digestive Health and Wellness program
so what's happening in the mind affects the gastrointestinal system
Smith says stress and anxiety can increase sensations of pain in the body and disrupt the GI system
When you feel an unpleasant sensation in the body
and the stress response is mounted," she says
"That gets that negative feedback loop going."
bloating and gas and sometimes urgent bowel movements or constipation
A new treatment approach helps patients learn how stress may make symptoms worse
In a crisis – if your arm is broken – this amped up pain response is useful
But if there's nothing structural to be treated
the heightened stress response is a problem
and can keep us stuck in the nervous system's fight-or-flight mode
Every cramp or stomach sensation can register as a threat
but it's almost as if the brain is misinterpreting the signal
A pillar of the integrative approach and many of the apps is to help patients limit anticipatory anxiety
and halt the feedback loop that can amplify the unpleasant feelings and sensations associated with IBS symptoms
"There was a significant improvement in quality of life and overall well-being," Smith says
The program includes various tools to help get patients to cultivate awareness and calm, including body scans, breathing exercises
It's not at all like what you'd see in the movies
There's no pendulum swinging in front of your face
Gut-directed hypnotherapy combines relaxation techniques with suggestions and guided imagery to help reset communication between the gut and the brain
first heard about gut-directed hypnotherapy he was experiencing frequent bouts of GI distress that made him hesitant to join in normal day-to-day activities
"There was this sort of anxiety around the idea of leaving home
the symptoms would just suddenly appear," Mastro recalls
Doctors had ruled out serious conditions and suggested stress could be a factor
this could be some form of anxiety that's triggering," he recalls
though he was under a lot of stress running a business
He says using the Nerva app helped him understand the connection
Hypnosis can address "the hypervigilance and hypersensitivity that happens in patients that have irritable bowel syndrome," explains Megan Riehl
a GI clinical psychologist at the University of Michigan who has been offering patients gut-directed hypnotherapy for several years
"Our brain and our gut are communicating all the time
And if you're somebody that has a digestive problem
it's like the communication is turned up way too high," she says
Hypnosis "helps calm that conversation down."
The technique usually starts with taking some long
to activate the parasympathetic nervous system
your chest relaxing or your stomach relaxing
one of Riehl's patients who lives in Grosse Pointe Park
What distinguishes hypnotherapy from meditation alone is that after you've started to relax
a psychologist will talk you through a script
mellifluous voice actor reading the script
"Powerful changes are happening inside your body
Imagine the sensations of abdominal pain are becoming a thing of the past," the soothing voice intones
The voice tells you to imagine that you've been welcomed into an apothecary
where smells of herbs and concoctions fill the air
A pharmacist has made an imaginary special medicine just for you
You're told it will create comfort and that it will soothe the line of communication between your mind and your gut
"You're put into a very calm state," Mastro says
And the changes or "suggestions" articulated in the 15-minute sessions start to feel real
The app also includes short readings that distill the science of the gut-brain connection into easy-to-understand bits
Mastro says he came to understand how he was changing his physiology
activating the parasympathetic nervous system
lowers blood pressure and improves the digestive process
"It's been nothing but transformative," Mastro says
he says he feels equipped to dial them back using the techniques he's learned
mindfulness based stress reduction and CBT
which has a deep body of scientific research behind it
The basic gist of CBT is that it helps people identify the connection between their patterns of thinking
And the goal is to recognize and alter their patterns of negative thinking
CBT has been shown to help people overcome insomnia and poor sleep
and researchers are studying its effect on IBS too
The idea is to help patients learn to "re-train" their thought processes to develop a more positive way of thinking
if you're hesitant to go out to eat because you're worried about having a bathroom emergency
CBT can help break the cycle of catastrophic
A more realistic assessment of the situation is to realize that if you did sense an urgent need to have a bowel movement
There are now apps to deliver IBS-tailored CBT. Mahana is authorized by the FDA for the condition and requires a doctor's prescription. Depending where you live, you can get a consult and prescription from within the app for a fee. Zemedy from Bold Health is another CBT-based digital app that has been shown to be effective in a small trial
The benefit of the technique goes well beyond controlling symptoms of IBS
CBT has been shown to improve overall mental health
Changing what's on the menu is another key tool for people to manage IBS
The University of Michigan has had a dedicated GI nutrition program since 2007
"When I started to talk about diet as an important part of treating patients with IBS at that time
people literally laughed at me," Chey says
"But now almost every gastroenterologist accepts that diet is an important part of the solution."
The FODMAP diet has gained the most attention from researchers
FODMAP stands for fermentable oligosaccharides
monosaccharides and polyols — and the diet requires elimination or reduction of certain foods known to commonly cause gut distress
excess fructose (found in some fruits and corn syrup) as well as certain nuts
Studies show somewhere between 52% to 86% of participants report significant improvement in their symptoms after following the diet
Researchers at Monash University in Australia explain that the FODMAP diet is based on the understanding that certain compounds in our diet can't be completely digested or absorbed
so they can end up in the large intestine where they're fermented by gut bacteria
"I saw the benefits almost within the first week," says Karen Beningo of Northville
who was treated at the University of Michigan
After she started the FODMAP diet she found her energy level improved significantly
"The distension and the bloating went away very quick," she says
she's now added some foods back to her diet
so she remains gluten-free and avoids onions
The diet helped her learn what her triggers were
"It was only through calming down my system and then reintroducing [them] that I pretty much confirmed
I've got a problem with those things," she explains
Following a rigorous diet takes a lot of awareness – luckily there's an app for this one. Monash University has this FODMAP app that can help people follow the diet

Cabinet Member for Community Health and Wellbeing
and a longtime official in the Jewish Labour Movement
told the full council meeting that Brent should be trying to “promote and enable community cohesion” at a time of great tension as a result of the conflict in the Middle East
“Twinning undertaken in a one-sided way in an area of conflict
can do the exact opposite – create community discord inside Brent,”added Cllr Nerva
we no doubt could have twinned with numerous towns and cities
and we can probably have a flag waving every single week of the year
Perhaps because of that diversity we have held back from twinning.”
Another senior London Labour figure told Jewish News after the November 18th meeting they believed the “time had come for my party to launch a proper investigation into the conduct of Brent council under its current leadership.”
They added:”We are inundated with complaints about drug dealing
litter and the increased chaos around train stations like Willesden Green
but a twinning with Nablus is deemed more important by some.”
Conservative councillor Michael Maurice slammed the ‘very divisive’ motion and tabled an amendment calling for a twinning arrangement with Ramla
Cllr Maurice said: “One side decided it did not take into account the diversity of the borough and the fact that
the Hindu community is actually the biggest community in Brent
Liberal Democrats Group leader Cllr Anton Georgiou also noted Brent’s diverse population
and suggested the motion should be withdrawn as a mark of respect for “everyone” in the borough
Ahead of a vote on the controversial twinning Nerva left the chamber in disgust
But the objections to the motion did not succeed and after it was voted through
Cllr Afzal posted on X saying it was an “honour to present and pass motion supporting twinning Brent with Nablus
“As something we’ve been planning for years
An analysis of Cllr Afzal’s social media feed on X showed it was dominated with support for the Palestinian cause

2017SNOWBOARDER Magazine found out early this morning that snowboard pioneer Jean Nerva has passed away at the age of 58
Were it not for Jean and riding partner Peter Bauer's extreme exploits in the European alpine
snowboarding wouldn't be where it is today
We offer our thoughts to Jean's friends and family and invite you to read a page from our 30th Anniversary issue featuring Jean and Peter in our Mountain GOATs feature
showcasing the riders whom we consider to be the greatest of all time
Jean and thanks for laying the foundation to help make snowboarding and this publication a little bit edgier
just as racing was beginning to succumb to freestyle's universal appeal
Peter Bauer and Jean Nerva arrived in America with asymmetric boards and hardboots and damn near righted racing's course
The duo found themselves shoehorned between tweakers like Craig Kelly and Jeff Brushie in Burton's team video Chill
Peter and Jean's fluid cinematic arcs charismatically showed turning as never before
and legions of groms set aside their Sorels in favor of plate bindings and plastic boots
Peter and Jean's perpendicular position to the snow became widely regarded in North America as "Euro carving" and the craze took off with Jean's infamous "You carve
no slide!" quote from Chill becoming the movement's mantra
The highly impractical asymmetrical Burton PJ pro model boards became coveted by the carving set
race boards and Euro carving was quickly eclipsed by the Summit County new school jib movement of the early nineties
which came with its own impractical trappings
or as it is still quixotically called in Europe "Vitelli turning" is once again en vogue proving that everything eventually comes full circle
Mountain GOATS celebrates the most influential snowboarders of the last thirty years (1987-2017)
otherwise known as the Greatest Of All Time list
With over 70 men and women riding into the ranks of the Mountain GOATS
check back as we release their bios and celebrated accolades over the course of the next few weeks
Shortly after the original article went to print, we learned of Jean's passing. We would just like to extend our condolences again to family and friends of the legendary rider, and thanks for all that Jean did for the sport.

Swelling in a blood vessel of the brain is called an aneurysm
It may have no symptoms and is usually diagnosed when doctors are testing for an unrelated condition
Aneurysms can rupture with little or no warning and
it's life-threatening and requires emergency medical attention
A brain aneurysm is an abnormal bulge that typically forms on a weak point on an artery in the brain
Patients with different risk factors — such as cigarette smoking
high blood pressure — can have a higher risk of developing aneurysms
So in patients who have multiple family members with aneurysms
monitoring with imaging over time to closely follow the aneurysm is appropriate
The goal of surgical treatment is to prevent blood flow from getting to the aneurysm to prevent a rupture
And the treatment can come in two different general types of categories
including microsurgical clipping and endovascular embolization
comprehensive stroke centers and an academic health network such as ours tend to have better outcomes after aneurism surgery than other centers
The Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin health network is a partnership between Froedtert Health and the Medical College of Wisconsin supporting a shared mission of patient care
Our health network operates eastern Wisconsin's only academic medical center and adult Level I Trauma Center at Froedtert Hospital
an internationally recognized training and research center engaged in thousands of clinical trials and studies

Patients are asked to imagine their gut as a beautiful
where all the digesting food slips through as if smoothly lubricated
Or they might be asked to think of their gut system as a free-flowing river
This is the brave new world of hypnotherapy treatment for IBS – irritable bowel syndrome – a nasty and mysterious gut disorder that affects as many as one in seven Australians
At best it's painful and restricts diet and lifestyle
Research has shown hypnotherapy can reduce symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) by 70% in patients
The cause of IBS is unknown and studies have revealed that IBS is more common in women than men. Treatment with drugs such as laxatives and antispasmodics don’t usually work too well
Symptoms can include constipation
lethargy and psychological issues such as anxiety and depression
It's a massive drain on the healthcare system and – with other related or imagined ailments – accounts for huge chunks of gastroenterologists’ and GPs’ time
may turn out to be a major part of the solution
Monash University has completed a major study (Editorial: gut‐directed hypnotherapy or low FODMAP diet for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome?) with results so positive that even the researchers were surprised
In conjunction with Monash’s groundbreaking low FODMAP diet – developed 12 years ago – it could unlock the suffering that comes with IBS
FODMAPs are sugars in foods and additives that are not absorbed properly in the gut and can trigger IBS symptoms
Read more: The FODMAP app that's changing lives, five years on
The hypnotherapy study – led by Dr Simone Peters – wanted to consolidate findings by UK researchers suggesting the therapy was effective
Dr Peters is part of Monash University and the Alfred Hospital’s Department of Gastroenterology
She also has one of Melbourne’s two hypnotherapy/IBS private clinics and is a psychophysiologist by training
“There was some talk from the UK about hypnotherapy,” she says
‘Let’s give it a shot.’ So we designed a study.”
The participants (78 people) were divided into groups using hypnotherapy alone
“We found hypnotherapy was incredibly beneficial.”
The results showed hypnotherapy was as beneficial as the low FODMAP diet
Seventy per cent of those surveyed responded positively to the hypnotherapy
and there was a significant improvement in their overall and individual gut symptoms ( abdominal pain
This improvement was also maintained six-months post-treatment
suggesting that the response was not purely a placebo
People doing only the hypnotherapy part of the study hadn't excluded anything from their diets
“That surprised and interested us,” Dr Peters said
“We would have expected the results to have not been as nice as the dietary arm
We also found the people who did the combination therapy didn’t do any better than those who did either one therapy on their own.” However
Dr Peters said those studied had only “low-level” or “normal” symptoms
Read more: Gut feeling: Is a carbohydrate called fructan giving gluten a bad rap?
The study also found that hypnotherapy was effective psychologically
too – patients were less anxious and less depressed after using it
were not particularly anxious or depressed individuals
This suggests that hypnotherapy shouldn't be saved for people with psychological co-morbidities
The dietary study showed no change in psychological symptoms or distress
But while hypnotherapy seems to be ideal for some IBS sufferers
two researchers from Monash’s Department of Gastroenterology – Dr Jane Muir and Dr Marina Iacovou – responded to an academic paper that compared yoga to a low FODMAP diet and found yoga was just as good
the Monash experts found the study “was not properly managed and was weighted toward yoga rather than diet
“but if you do these sorts of studies you have to do them properly
You have to design a diet study very carefully and make sure you have the right clinicians delivering the diet
Then if you have well-controlled dietary studies they become harder and harder to criticise.”
Yoga may well turn out to be as effective as hypnotherapy
They both work on the body and the mind in similar ways
“There is a brain-gut axis,” says Dr Iacovou
“There is strong communication between the two
The hypnotherapy is getting the mind in a relaxed state and getting you to think about how you're feeling and how your gut is feeling so that when you have an IBS episode you can use it as a tool.”
slippery passages in the gut the patients are asked to imagine
but it has definitely become an option for many people,” Dr Iacovou said
The next phase of the Monash research, funding permitting – and it's hard to get funding for so-called ''alternative'' therapies – is to do more detailed studies (such as finding out which kinds of patients are most likely to respond) so that hypnotherapy for IBS becomes better understood and used more widely

This silver denarius, minted over 2,000 years ago
the coin is vital evidence for the early stages of a political struggle that culminated in Caesar’s assassination and the fall of the Roman Republic
I first encountered this coin while studying Roman history in graduate school. Its unusual design gave me pause – this one depicted figures walking across a narrow bridge and dropping something into a box. I moved on after learning it depicted voting, reasoning that Roman mint officials occasionally made idiosyncratic choices
the political importance of this centuries-old coin seems more compelling
It turns out that efforts to regulate voting access go way back
Voting was a core feature of the Roman Republic and a regular activity for politically active citizens. Men, and only men
could vote in multiple elections and legislative assemblies each year
The answer lies in voting procedures that sometimes heavily favored elites
The wealthiest Romans controlled more than half of the voting units in this assembly
The poorest citizens had just one voting unit; since they voted last
Elites could directly observe and potentially intimidate poorer voters
That all began to change in 139 BCE when the Roman politician Aulus Gabinius passed a law mandating written ballots for elections. Two further laws, both passed in the 130s
extended the use of written ballots to legislative voting and most trial juries
These written ballots made it more difficult for elites to influence voting but not impossible. Each unit formed its own line leading to a bridge where voters received ballots to mark and place in a basket
Elites could station themselves or their allies on the bridge to encourage people to vote the “right” way
The reverse of Nerva’s coin depicts the reception and deposit of the ballot
the first and last moments of a voter’s time on the bridge
The absence of nonvoter figures on the coin
Nerva was celebrating an important voting rights victory and announcing his allegiance to Marius
The aristocrats never managed to repeal the voting laws and were still grumbling about them even as the Republic collapsed
The long Roman struggle over voting procedures provides a useful and perhaps even comforting reminder. Changing state voting laws and election lawsuits are nothing new
The fight over voter access to the ballot is an inevitable side effect of democracy

2021ShareIs It Worth Trying Hypnotherapy for IBS Symptoms?Studies show that there are significant benefits to utilizes hypnotherapy for IBS; here
experts weigh in on the buzzy new treatment

the condition’s main treatment is through dietary restrictions
Hypnotherapy for IBS might sound far-fetched
Alex Naoumidis is the Co-Founder of Mindset Health
a company helping people manage chronic health issues with app-based hypnotherapy
Your doctor might prescribe medication to help you treat symptoms
but dietary interventions are the most common treatment
sufferers will eliminate potential triggers such as dairy
but many people with IBS have hypersensitive nerves in their colon that signal to the brain that something’s amiss
it makes sense that one method for managing symptoms is to eliminate FODMAP foods from your diet
But this includes difficult-to-avoid foods like garlic and onion as well as otherwise healthy (and yummy) foods such as apples
and it requires abstaining from many foods that are otherwise beneficial to your health
Because of the gut-brain connection, he explains, mental health issues—including depression, anxiety, and stress—can wreak havoc on your digestive system. In other words, you can certainly feed your colon foods that are less irritating to it, but it might need a therapist, so to speak. This is why experts like Dr. Sonpal prescribe stress-reduction strategies for IBS, whether yoga, therapy, running, etc.—whatever works for the patient. “All stress busters are good stress busters,” he says.
But what, exactly, is IBS-specific hypnotherapy, and how can it be incorporated into an individual’s lifestyle to manage symptoms?
a gut-directed hypnotherapist who led the Monash clinical trial
the company says that 89 percent of them showed some improvement in symptoms
it leads you through an assessment to ensure you’re a fit for the program
you’ll begin with a six-week intensive program
“A day of the program might include a psychoeducation article about
and then you’ll listen to a session of hypnosis-based guided imagery,” says Naoumidis.
Naoumidis explains that it’s a similar experience to guided meditation
“You’ll be asked to sit somewhere comfortable and close your eyes
and then the hypnotherapist brings you into a state of focused attention and relaxation through their words,” he says.
Because this particular hypnotherapy is designed to address IBS
the visualizations are sort of bowel specific (but not in a gross way!)
“You might be guided through an eighteenth-century pharmacy
where you’re drinking medicine that can coat your insides and help numb them,” Naoumidis says
Nerva can be used as needed to manage symptoms
Naoumidis says some people use it once a week thereafter
while others may only lean on the program during flare-ups
Nerva’s founder wants to clarify that Nerva is not a treatment for IBS; rather
it’s a self-management program that individuals can use to alleviate their symptoms and improve their quality of life
He says a significant percentage of the app’s users come from doctor and nutritionist referrals
The company is now looking to conduct a randomized clinical trial comparing Nerva to a sham program (aka an inactive treatment designed to mimic a therapy) in the hopes of further validating their product
If you can’t access Nerva due to budgetary restrictions (it costs $69.99 for three months worth of access
less expensive than a single in-person hypnotherapy session)
Sonpal reiterates that any stress-reduction technique can help alleviate IBS symptoms
“So anything that’s going to help with centering a person’s mind and alleviating stress and emotional distress—whether that be exercise

author and expert Mel Wacks is selling his collection of ancient coins
The coins are being offered as part of the New York Sale consortium’s auction XLVIII of ancient coins Jan
during the New York International Numismatic Convention
Many of these coins reflect aspects of the stories of Jewish people throughout the ages
One such highlight offers an object lesson in how scholarship — even on coins that are 2,000 years old — is ever-changing
which was a half shekel (equivalent to two Roman denarii)
The coin shows Roman emperor Nerva on the obverse
refers to the Jewish tax “Fisci Ivdaici,” and the embarrassment (CALVMNIA) surrounding its application
According to the Roman historian Suetonius: “More than any other
the Fiscus Iudaicus was administered very severely; and to it were brought
those who either had lived the life of a Jew unprofessed
had not paid the tax imposed upon the people
I remember that it was of interest to me during my youth when a ninety-year-old man was brought before the procurator and a very crowded court to see whether he was circumcised.”
A long-held interpretation that Nerva lifted that “embarrassment” by repealing the tax has been challenged in recent years
challenges the thought that the coin’s inscription means the Jewish tax
introduced by Vespasian after the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem
Heemstra also disagrees with the theory that the CALVMNIA was “the circumcision test” described by Suetonius
Heemstra’s research suggests that the coin reflects
and that the legend should be translated: “The removal of the wrongful accusation (CALVMNIA) of the Fiscus Judaicus (the imperial tax collection agency).”
who were wrongfully accused of secretly being Jewish
Conviction of such a “crime” could subject a person to having their wealth confiscated
could be claimed to instigate such a conviction
Nerva’s changes to the laws helped transform the definition of Jew from an ethnic one into a religious one
this coin represents Nerva’s order not to abolish the tax itself but [removal] of the insulting method of collecting the Jewish tax,” according to the firm. For the full story behind this tax and recent scholarship

The coin is described in the catalog as being Very Fine with a flan crack
and has an estimate of $4,000 and up.

2012 7:41 PMErnst's Ions Week Concludes: NERVA-Ion Mars Mission (1966)A complex 1966 Mars expedition design would have used a nuclear-powered ion drive to get astronauts to Mars
Space historian and Beyond Apollo blogger David S
Portree explains how the mission might have proceeded.Image: NASA Marshall Space Flight Center.Save this storySaveSave this storySaveThrough most of 1966
it was still reasonable to assume that NASA and the United States might enjoy an expansive post-Apollo future off the Earth
Manned missions beyond the moon were expected to evolve from programs already in place; namely
the joint NASA/Atomic Energy Commission NERVA nuclear-thermal rocket program
and the Apollo Applications Program of advanced lunar missions and Earth-orbiting space stations
in March 1966 the American Institute of Astronautics and Aeronautics and the American Astronautical Society jointly convened the Stepping Stones to Mars conference in Baltimore
be the last major Mars-focused engineering meeting until the 1980s
Attendees heard a team of engineers from NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) in Huntsville
describe a piloted Mars mission based on both high-thrust NERVA-II nuclear-thermal rockets and low-thrust nuclear-ion (electric) propulsion
The study team's leader was veteran German-born rocketeer Ernst Stuhlinger
the director of MSFC's Research Projects Laboratory
Stuhlinger had begun his work on ion propulsion in the 1930s
then worked for Hitler's nuclear program
in 1941 he was drafted into the Wehrmacht and sent to the Russian front
After suffering wounds in the Battle of Moscow and surviving the Battle of Stalingrad
he was reassigned to Wernher von Braun's rocket team at the Baltic Sea rocket base of Peenemünde in 1943
There he worked on the guidance system for the V-2 missile
Stuhlinger resumed his ion propulsion work in Huntsville in the early 1950s
while von Braun's team was part of the Army Ballistic Missile Agency at Redstone Arsenal
the Peenemünde rocketeers became the nucleus around which NASA MSFC coalesced in July 1960
Stuhlinger and his colleagues scheduled their NERVA/nuclear-ion Mars expedition for launch in 1986, 20 years after they presented their paper, because in that year the amount of energy needed to travel from Earth to Mars and back would be relatively small and solar activity would be at an ebb. The MSFC team assumed (rather naively) that their expedition would encounter no solar flares, so they skimped on radiation shielding to reduce spacecraft mass.
They also anticipated that ion propulsion would be applied first to Earth-orbital satellite station-keeping in the late 1960s, and that enough ion propulsion research would be completed by 1974 to justify government approval of the NERVA/nuclear-ion Mars expedition. That would leave 12 years for spacecraft development and testing.
On 1 May 1986, the four NERVA-II engines would power up and operate for nearly 30 minutes. The spacecraft crews would, meanwhile, shelter in their MEMs. In the event of NERVA-II trouble, the MEM would serve as the crew's abort-to-Earth vehicle.
One-hundred-and-forty-five days out from Earth, the four ships would re-activate their nuclear-ion thrusters to begin deceleration. Then, on 23 September 1986, Mars's gravity would capture them into a high orbit. Their ion thrusters would continue to operate so that they would spiral down to a 1000-kilometer circular Mars orbit in 23.5 days.
During the spiral-down period, the four MEMs would undock and land on Mars, leaving the four ships unmanned. Relieved of the mass of the MEMs, the nuclear-ion ships would spiral inward toward Mars more rapidly.
"Study of a NERVA-Electric Manned Mars Vehicle," Ernst Stuhlinger, Joseph King, Russell Shelton, and Gordon Woodcock, A Volume of Technical Papers Presented at the AIAA/AAS Stepping Stones to Mars Meeting, pp. 288-301; paper presented in Baltimore, Maryland, 28-30 March 1966.

with clasped hands holding a legionary eagle set upon a prow on the reverse
we teach our readers about what a “weak-fatty” gold coin is and why you don’t want one in your collection
Nerva’ s reign was influenced by his predecessor’s decision to increase wages for soldiers from 225 denarii to 300 denarii
the coins used to pay the wages were of increased weight and purity compared to previous coins
“This was a difficult act for an elderly senator to follow
especially since for at least six decades now the army had been instrumental in making and maintaining emperors,” according to the catalog
“Money was key to Nerva’s success: he maintained Domitian’s standards of heavy
pure aurei and he devoted reverse types to the army.”
The reverse may represent Nerva’s hope that the army and the senate could work together (though their relationship was strained by two assassination plots the year this coin was issued)
Nerva died of natural causes four months after issuing this coin and was succeeded by Trajan
The coin has “an almost invisible edge nick at four o’clock on obverse,” but is otherwise Good Very Fine / About Extremely Fine
It has an estimate of 12,500 Swiss francs ($12,882 U.S.) in the auction in Zurich
Nerva, a Spanish company specializing in electric mobility, is one of the newer players in the electric two-wheeler game
and features a unique electric powertrain highlighted by the use of LFP batteries
While Lithium Ion batteries have become the norm
The Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries found in the Nerva Exe scooter come from one of the biggest battery technology companies in the world
You may be familiar with BYD as the Chinese manufacturer of plug-in hybrid cars
BYD’s main revenue stream comes in the form of developing and manufacturing high-quality batteries for use across multiple industries
With electrification gradually becoming the norm
it’s not surprising that the company is investing big time in new technology to further enhance the performance of its batteries
what exactly do LFP batteries have over traditional power cells
LFP batteries have a positive pole that's made of lithium iron phosphate
This gives the batteries increased fire protection
Reports suggest that LFP batteries are capable of up to three times as many charging cycles as that of conventional batteries
LFP batteries tend to produce lower energy density and voltage as compared to that of Lithium Ion cells
This means that more cells are required in order to compensate for this deficit
considered by many as a full-fledged maxi-scooter
The Nerva Exe offers a variety of creature comforts
such as the ability to store two helmets under the seat
feature a rather rudimentary analog speedometer
A five-inch display provides other pertinent information
The scooter is equipped with four riding modes
Nerva is expected to roll out the Exe in Spain very soon
so we can expect it to be offered at an attractive price tag
A Nerva dealer network has yet to be set up
but we can expect this to change later on this year

Deep space is a hostile environment for humans, which makes the long journey to Mars a serious stumbling block for manned missions
A nuclear-powered rocket could slash the journey time
and NASA has announced plans to test the technology by 2027 at the latest
Most spacecraft to date have used chemical rockets packed with fuel and oxidizer, which rely on combustion to propel them through space
A nuclear-powered rocket would instead use a fission reactor to heat liquid hydrogen to very high temperatures and then blast it out the back of the spacecraft
These kinds of engines could be up to three times more efficient than those in conventional rockets
and could cut the time to transit from Earth to Mars from roughly seven months to as little as six weeks
NASA has teamed up with DARPA to make the idea a reality
signing a deal with defense contractor Lockheed Martin to launch a working prototype into space as early as 2025
"This demonstration will be a crucial step in meeting our moon to Mars objectives for crew transportation into deep space," NASA Deputy Administrator Pam Melroy said in a statement announcing the deal
This isn’t the first time NASA has explored the idea of a nuclear thermal rocket engine
The agency’s Project NERVA (Nuclear Engine for Rocket Vehicle Application) ran from the late 50s until the early 70s and saw several prototypes tested on the ground
But the end of the Apollo missions and subsequent cuts in NASA’s budget meant the engine was never tested in space
The idea has now been revived under the name DRACO, short for Demonstration Rocket for Agile Cislunar Operations. The new name helps explain why DARPA has come on board: the agency thinks the same technology could allow military satellites to maneuver more rapidly and efficiently in orbit to avoid being targeted by enemies
The contract signed last week will see Lockheed Martin design, build, and test the spacecraft, while Virginia-based BWX Technologies is responsible for designing the nuclear reactor. While the reactors used in Project NERVA relied on weapons-grade uranium, DRACO will use a less enriched fuel known as high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU)
This reactor won’t be switched on until the vehicle is in orbit to avoid the risk of a nuclear accident at launch. It will be lofted to an altitude of between 435 and 1,240 miles, which is high enough that the rocket will stay in orbit for at least 300 years
giving time for radioactive materials to decay to safe levels before it returns to Earth

the reactor will be fired up and used to heat cryogenically-cooled liquid hydrogen
As the propellant rapidly rises from minus 420 degrees Fahrenheit to as high as 4,400 degrees
it expands dramatically and the resulting gas is pushed through a nozzle to propel the spacecraft
The vehicle isn’t expected to carry out any complicated maneuvers; the idea is to simply validate that the design works and collect data on its operation. And according to Live Science
storing liquid hydrogen at cryogenic temperatures for extended periods in space is likely to prove as much of a challenge as getting the reactor to work safely
a nuclear-powered rocket engine could have a host of benefits
Their efficiency means they could run for a much longer time than chemical rockets
allowing the spacecraft to hit much higher velocities
That could make it possible to reach Mars in just 45 days
which would significantly reduce astronauts’ exposure to radiation in deep space and the negative mental effects of being cooped up in a tin can for months at a time
The design requires less propellant to be carried
freeing up space for more equipment and other important payloads
The reactor could also double as a reliable power source for the astronauts once they reached the red planet
While it might be some time before the idea is ready for prime time
it seems like nuclear-powered rockets may be key to humanity’s goal of venturing deeper into the solar system

Phase II commenced in October 1969, immediately after President Richard Nixon's Space Task Group (STG) endorsed (with reservations) NASA's aggressive Integrated Program Plan (IPP) for future U.S. spaceflight. The IPP was the brainchild of George Mueller's NASA Headquarters Office of Manned Space Flight, which supervised NASA's manned spaceflight centers, including MSFC.
That same month, NASA Administrator Thomas Paine permanently terminated Saturn V production and canceled Apollo 20 so that its Saturn V could launch the Apollo Applications Program (AAP) Dry Workshop (DWS). In February 1970, NASA gave the AAP DWS the new name Skylab and redesignated AAP as the Skylab Program.
Phase II segued into Phase III in May 1970, when MSFC directed the NFSD contractors to assume a 1978 or 1979 NERVA I flight readiness date. The shift in flight-readiness date reflected an anticipated Fiscal Year 1971 NERVA funding cut. MSFC also directed the contractors to limit to 150 tons the amount of liquid hydrogen propellant each RNS would carry.
In February 1971, with the NFSD study set to conclude in less than two months, D. J. Osias, an analyst with Bellcomm, NASA's Apollo planning contractor, summarized and critiqued reports prepared by the three contractors. He began by examining the ways that the contractors had approached the problem of radiation shielding. "Nuclear propulsion," he wrote, "complicates in-space operations by introducing a radioactive environment."
All the RNS designs included a 3000-pound radiation shield on top of the NERVA I to create a conical radiation "shadow" for crew protection, but also relied on the vehicle's propellants and structure for supplemental shielding. Osias asserted that "in regard to radiation shielding. . .the most optimistic results are being accepted and attention to the problem is diminishing."
In NFSD study Phase II, LMSC estimated that, after just one Earth-moon roundtrip, enough spent fuel would have accumulated within a NERVA I engine that it would need to remain in a safe high-altitude disposal orbit for 135 years. By the end of its operational life, after ten Earth-moon flights, the "most desirable method of disposing of an engine" would, Osias wrote, be to "send the RNS on an unmanned, one-way mission to deep space."
