Novelda
a developer and manufacturer of adaptive smart sensors
announced two new modules – the X4M300 Presence Sensor for occupancy sensing and the X4M200 Respiration Sensor for non-contact respiration and vital-sign monitoring
Both modules benefit from improvements made by Novelda in the performance
integration and functional capability of its ultra-wideband impulse radar system-on-chip (SoC) design
These advances have also yielded a smaller-size
lower-cost implementation that allows these modules to be readily deployed without needing to be an expert in radar or antenna design
which operates at unlicensed center frequencies of 7.29 GHz or 8.748 GHz
has a configurable frame size and can operate 10x faster than previously
This enables a greater range of up to 10 m for presence detection
while offering a respiration monitoring zone of 0.4 – 5.0 m
for detecting breathing patterns or frequency when the target is otherwise still
What sets Novelda’s sensors apart from alternative solutions is that
the use of sensitive radar technology allows the sensors to see through most materials
the sensors can be hidden within walls or above ceilings for tamper-proof security or aesthetic reasons
and functions reliably in harsh and dirty environments
the non-contact nature of the sensor’s operation avoids the discomfort of body-worn sensors and allows unobtrusive vital-sign monitoring in medical environments
XeThru sensors also overcome the privacy concerns raised by cameras in elderly care situations
the sensors are far more sensitive and discriminating than PIR sensors
avoiding false detection due the movement of other objects and ensuring the lights stay on even when the occupant is only breathing
“Customers who choose to go with XeThru off-the-shelf sensor modules gain all the performance advantages of our highly-optimized X4 SoC with the very real benefit of a proven sensor design that they can take to market immediately”
“Not everyone has the expertise or desire to develop their own radar sensing solutions
For these people our modules provide a cost-effective solution that out-performs competing technologies for demanding occupancy and vital-sign detection”

Text description provided by the architects. The three project aims are the construction of a public facility, the development of a public square and the construction of underground parking, which serves the important commercial area of the district.
The space where the building is located is very unique because it is placed in a neighbourhood with high population density and few public facilities, so the building generates an important point of urban life, non-existent until the construction of the building.
© Diego OpazoThis project gives the neighbourhood a social centre with different uses. So the urban space mainly improves by citizens enjoying the square, the socio-cultural centre and the public spaces that the building generates itself.
Between the building and the street Avenida de Novelda, neighbourhood commercial hub, it generates a square - garden that defines the northern blocks of homes and on the south by Francesc Cantó school grounds.
© Diego Opazo The characteristics of the site and the determining structural mesh underground parking rule the project. The building is organized with a very precise geometry modulated by the plot elements of the Basement. The building has a composition of volumes that creates a series of ground floor spaces which serve to articulate the grounds and facilities surrounding the building.
The building is a set of blocks, the base ground block and three rectangular block twinned perpendicular to it. Between both it is created a corridor which visually links the square with the main street and the garden located at the west.
© Diego Opazo The open courtyards originate southeast oriented transversely conferring transparency to the school Francesc Cantó.
This set of volumes make an outside compact set, with a wealth of covered spaces and courtyards, which will expand the public use space’s during the utilization schedule, and shall be closed at remaining time.
© Diego OpazoThe combined projected facades large planes alternating solid and glazed modules that give the ground floor a closed nature outwards in longitudinal block ground floor are created around courtyards that open on interior spaces. On the first floor large open windows, those at the ends are protected from sunlight by horizontal bands forming a lattice fenolizados board, while the ends are blind.
The materials used are outside enclosure walls finished with plaster of lime glass and metal. Inside the partitioning is provided with light and removable partitions

Novelda announced the XeThru Developer Platform for sensing applications based on its second-generation X4 ultra-wideband (UWB) impulse radar system-on-chip (SoC)
OEMs and system developers can easily implement sophisticated sensors that can detect small movements
and monitor respiration and other human vital signs with unprecedented accuracy and discrimination
the XeThru platform provides everything developers need to rapidly start prototyping their radar application designs
The hardware bundles an X4 SoC with an MCU board and a PCB antenna
while communications software provides an API layer that enables access to the full functionality of the SoC
and open source reference code allows the use of digital signal processing libraries to extend system performance
the X4 UWB impulse radar SoC combines a transmitter
which can operate at center frequencies of either 7.29 GHz or 8.748 GHz for unlicensed operation in worldwide markets
with a direct RF sampling receiver and a fully programmable system controller
The X4 SoC delivers some key performance improvements over the previous design: its frame size is now configurable for different applications and the range
making it 10x faster and much more suitable for presence detection; its on-chip advanced power management functions enable low-power duty cycle control and dramatically reducing power dissipation; and its higher level of integration reduces external component BOM costs by more than 50 percent
“The real benefit of the XeThru X4 Platform is in kick-starting the development of more advanced radar sensing applications
allowing customers who aren’t radar experts to do more than simply build a system with off-the-shelf sensors”
we will also be upgrading our own presence detection and respiration sensors to take advantage of the enhanced performance of the X4 chip
And for customers who start with our X4M03 hardware and want to go straight to production
we will be offering the X4M02 as a single-board module that is 100 percent code compatible but at a lower cost in higher volumes”
Intended specifically to aid the development of sensors based on UWB radar technology
the components of the XeThru Developer Platform include:
The X4 Impulse Radar SoC is the smallest UWB radar chip currently available in the market and offers unprecedented ease-of-use and BOM cost advantages
As a UWB radar solution it has been highly optimized for occupancy and respiration sensing applications and provides sub-mm accuracy with a simultaneous observation range up to 10m
Operating at below 10GHz allows it to see through obstacles and its ultra-high spatial resolution allows the detection of multiple objects
Specified for industrial temperature range applications from -40°C to +85°C
the chip includes advanced power management features to ensure low power consumption (typically < 120 mW)
The XeThru Developer Platform makes all the X4 SoC performance advantages available to anyone wanting to design advanced sensing solutions without the need to be an expert in radar or antenna design
Voicing his feelings after participating in this year’s International Solid-State Circuits Conference
“ISSCC has always been the world’s go-to forum for cutting-edge developments in IC design
we were very proud to have been accepted as a presenter at this year’s event.” He continued
“To have taken an active role in this prestigious conference at such an exciting time in Novelda’s development was very exciting
The many positive discussions we had with delegates about our X4 radar technology made it very rewarding.”

This year is the time for ultra-wideband to rise and shine
Ultra-wideband (UWB) was once considered a niche
but intriguing alternative to incumbent presence detection and tracking technologies
localisation trackers and infrared sensors
the industry overlooked UWB until recently
Experts now project that UWB implementation will grow significantly
They estimate UWB will have a higher compound annual growth rate than Wi-Fi or Bluetooth from 2023-2030
While UWB’s initial applications focused on peer-to-peer communication and ranging
This opens the technology to additional use cases
UWB is a worthy challenger to other wireless technologies due to its reliable presence detection and tracking capabilities
communication performance and unique human presence sensing
UWB (radar) is so precise that it can even save lives in detention centres by sensing sleeping inmates’ vital signs
While this technology may mark the next wireless revolution as it matures in 2024
short-range wireless technology that uses radio waves to sense the presence of objects and people
complete low-latency data transmission and provide information about an object or person’s location
While Bluetooth and Wi-Fi share some of these core qualities
very short pulses instead of a continuous radio frequency (RF) carrier to achieve low-power wireless sensing over short distances and facilitates low-latency data transmission
The resulting radio signal bandwidth ranges from 500MHz to 1GHz
Figure 2: UWB technology transmits minuscule
ultra-short pulses instead of a continuous radiofrequency carrier
With an RF range spanning 3.1GHz to 10.6GHz and the transmitted energy spread on an ultra-wide band
the power level of these frequencies is below the noise floor
UWB’s technological advantages also include fine-time resolution that enhances the ability to determine distance based on time-of-flight of radio waves
enabling UWB to track other UWB devices precisely
Figure 1: A UWB sensor can sense the slightest movements
Aside from these established capabilities UWB can sense even tiny movements
including a person’s respiration and heartbeat
enabling it to track people in a room without carry-on devices
A UWB sensor transmits electromagnetic pulses and listens for reflected echoes in much the same way as a traditional radar
such as a breathing motion or a heartbeat (Figure 1)
These characteristics and technological advantages facilitate deployments that adhere to worldwide regulations in numerous industries
UWB had garnered significant attention from early adopters
confirming this technology’s diverse applications
as it enabled ‘super-fine’ indoor positioning and secure identification of devices based on distance or fine localisation
the idea of using UWB to sense its environment by receiving and analysing the echo of the transmitted radio signal from its surroundings was emerging
Many potential adopters seemed incredulous about UWB’s benefits until widespread implementation in smartphones validated its capabilities
This materialised in September 2019 when Apple announced the iPhone 11
implementing the ISO-802-15-4z UWB standard with enhanced security mechanisms
There was more to this story that was happening behind the scenes
the car manufacturer Jaguar Land Rover implemented UWB into a new car access solution to protect against “relay attacks”
This use case seemingly sparked interest from smartphone manufacturers
opening the door for UWB implementation in consumer electronics
While Apple and other smartphone manufacturers continued to integrate UWB ranging
Laptop manufacturer Lenovo adopted UWB sensing in its X1 models
unreliable time-outs that trigger the user’s logout from a Windows session through passive infrared sensors (PIRs)
UWB can detect presence through a person’s tiny motions
enhancing reliability to achieve true human presence sensing
While smartphone and computer manufacturers already use UWB for detection and tracking
the automotive sector is beginning to adopt UWB to serve additional lifesaving use cases
Amid increasing child car safety regulations to prevent vehicular heatstroke
UWB is emerging as an alternative for child presence detection (CPD) in vehicles
with its technological capabilities outpacing traditional CPD technologies such as 60GHz
an average of 38 children die per year from it and it has claimed the lives of more than 950 children since 1998
recent regulatory actions in the US via the Hot Cars Act and in Europe via the New Car Assessment Programme require car manufacturers to install CPD systems in new vehicles from 2025
with 60GHz being the current prevailing CPD technology
offer a promising alternative for CPD use cases and are already attracting interest from major automotive manufacturers
UWB provides car manufacturers with simple integration requiring no model tuning or calibration
This makes UWB easier and cheaper to integrate than 60GHz
which typically requires calibration specific to the car model
UWB’s power consumption can be as low as a few µW
which is at least five-times lower than 60GHz’s power consumption
with the latter suffering from higher power consumption due to its frequency range and legacy architecture
UWB also features better penetration abilities
It can sense through clothes and car seats while being less sensitive to obstacles and materials within car cabins
This is particularly advantageous as car cabins are highly reflective multi-path environments with interior objects that block and reflect other radio waves

The so-called XeThru technology is a microwave radar system integrated on a CMOS chip that can act as ground-probing radar
According to reports from about 2011 it is makes use of a design style that does not use synchronous clock-based digital logic and thereby achieves lower power consumption while accelerating processing speed
has been designed into land mine detectors
operates at a lower frequency than the X1 and can therefore look deeper into the ground and through lightweight building materials
It has been in production with foundry TSMC for about a year
The two sensor modules are the X2M200 respiratory module and the X2M300 presence module both can work at distances of up to several meters and do not require line of sight
The X2M300 module is intended for smart home automation where its capability for detecting human presence while being integrated into a building’s structure enables hidden
As well as security and comfort applications
such as the convenient actuation of lighting and environmental controls
especially for the elderly or people who live alone
using the absence of normal activity to raise an alarm
It has a range of up to about 4.8 meters and an acquisition time of about 1s
Multiple sensors can operate in the same space and each module consumes less than 400mW power
The modules measure 50mm by 70mm and have SPI and USB serial interfaces
They are also pending FCC and ETSI approval
Novelda also offers a XeThru development kit at a price of $1499

Sarthak Kumar tells us more about a Copa del Rey clash in 2002 which became forever etched in history
If Barça won no one would mention the goalkeeper
Nestling within the southern parts of Valencia lies the city of Novelda
A small population of twenty-seven thousand is garnished by a thriving marble industry
Apartment blocks from the fifties and warehouses give way to a casino and an old town hall
The Novelda players came out for the warm up but they weren't really concentrating - after all they were playing against this eleven: Enke; Reiziger
You could feel the talent - the class - oozing from the Barcelona team
‘Tis the bane of a substitute keeper - out of rhythm
He came from a foreign country and now he had to play on a rugged pitch in an unpracticed team full of substitutes
Bright daylight shone on the stadium even at 8 in the evening
and were always a pass ahead of their Segunda B opponents
Riquelme played a pass in the attacking third into empty space and Geovanni made no mistake
Five thousand fans applauded - it was a quality goal by quality players
Miguel Ángel Mullor swung the ball into the box
He wanted to draw his defenders' attention to the lone man
26-year-old Toni Madrigal was in his best years as an established Segunda B player
A 187 cm tall striker with a deadly right foot
and an uncanny ability to evade his marker
the marker was Dutch international Michael Reiziger
and the right foot he loved met the ball perfectly and one touch is all it took to draw the scores level
For fifty-eight minutes Madrigal had been grazing away at Barcelona's defenders
the ball was fumbled but Rochemback seemed to have the ball under control
Madrigal had sensed correctly that his teammate would get the ball
and had already started running towards Barça's goal
and de Boer - who was behind him - wasn't quick
He knew Madrigal would get to the ball before he did
The ball was buried in the net from twelve yards out
but Barcelona needed just a small window of opportunity and they would be through
but he was gripped by the fear that whatever he did would make things worse
He loved crossing to the back post - and Madrigal knew that perfectly well
perhaps scared of making a mistake himself
He placed his header so that it would bounce and spin unpredictably
Novelda's bench thundered because the fans were thumping the roof
De Boer stood in the penalty box and railed at him
A professional was humiliating a teammate on the pitch
There were still twelve minutes there but the game was already over
the fans celebrated their win and their hero: Toni Madrigal
was the first player to score a hat-trick against Barcelona in the 21st century
