a Portuguese equestrian company that pursues excellence in high performance dressage sport
have started the 2025 international competition year with a double victory and top placings at the 2025 CDI Jerez de la Frontera in Spain
For Thiago Mantovani 2025 is a year of new beginnings with a first milestone set by establishing Mythos Mantovani
a collaboration between the Portuguese horse investment company Mantovani Horses and the Spanish equestrian center Mythos in Madrid
Mythos Mantovani organizes high-end showcases for the promotion of elite sport horse genetics in sales and breeding. Mantovani's breeding stallions Escorial and Nuelo are now standing there at stud and are offered fresh to the breeders
Mantovani's team riders Joao Marcari Oliva (BRA) and Maxi Kira von Platen (GER) have set the bar high early in the season with strong competition results aboard Orion de la Gesse and Oporto d'Atela
The renowned Real Escuela del Arte Ecuestre in Jerez de la Frontera
became the venue of the first two international dressage competitions on the Iberian peninsula in 2025
Hosted between 8 - 16 March 2025 Jerez hosted two weeks of back-to-back CDI's
Maxi Kira and Oporto d'AtelaBrazilian Olympian Joa Victor Oliva competed the first week aboard the 7-year old French bred Mantovani's Orion de la Gesse (by Escorial x Zamorim) and dominated the 7-year old division with its 12 combination
The pair topped the board in both the preliminary and Finals test
"Orion is a horse I have high hopes for," said Joao
"He's already winning in the 7-year old division
This was the first event of the year and I'm very pleased with the result."
The second week Maxi Kira von Platen travelled from Germany to make her international show debut aboard Mantovani's Oporto d'Atela (by Escorial x Madrigal)
her first CDI as part of Team Mantovani and her first on the striking bay Lusitano stallion
After getting warmed up in the 7-year old preliminary test with a 5th place and 72.129% they moved into second place in the Finals test with 72.700%
"Oporto had a long way from Germany to Spain
but far from being tired he was super fresh and motivated when I arrived
I'm very happy that Thiago made this trip possible for us," said Maxi Kira
"The first two days he needed a little bit of time to feel good in the atmopshere as he has little show experience
Norbert van Laak trained us via video and Oporto did a fantastic job."
While Grand Prix level competition is the ultimate goal for both horses
the 2025 World Championships for young dressage horses in Verden is an important mid-term target
Maxi and Oporto"We like to see Maxi Kira and Oporto move into the Prix St Georges division and with consistent work move up to Grand Prix," said Thiago Mantovani
"It's great to see how well Maxi Kira gets along with her first Lusitano
It's a testament to their amazing character and rideability
For Von Platen it has been an adventure training and competing a Lusitano for the first time in her professional career
very quick to learn and I can ride him to small aids
He showed me that it doesn't depend on the breeding of a horse
"It would be super nice to qualify him for Verden but in the end it's our aspiration to train him
Thiago was thrilled with the results of his two horses at the CDI Jerez de la Frontera
"For Orion de la Gesse we're definitely aiming for the World Young Horse Championships
consecutive WCYH with offspring by our flagship stallion Escorial."

reigning European Champion Steve Guerdat talks to WoSJ about a year that will go into the books as one to remember
From being 2023’s most successful Nations Cup rider
to winning the individual gold medal in Milan
before closing the year with his third Top 10 Final-title – the Swiss 41-year-old won’t forget the last twelve months anytime soon.
Guerdat’s season started a little bit differently than it normally would
I chose to not aim for the World Cup Final but rather focus on getting all my horses ready for the outdoor season
I did the tours in Oliva and Vejer de la Frontera,” he tells.
It was in Vejer de la Frontera that Guerdat’s mare Dynamix de Belheme (Snaike de Blondel x Cornet Obolensky
bred by Frederic Aimez) gave a small indication of what was to come from her – during the third week of the Sunshine Tour
she won the CSI4* Grand Prix presented by Equine America
Placing 4th in the Rolex Grand Prix at her next show – The Dutch Masters
one of the four Majors of the year in the Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping – Dynamix once again showed she would be one to watch for the season ahead
the 10-year-old mare jumped clear in the second round of the CSIO5* Nations Cup in La Baule
double clear in the CSIO5* Nations Cup in Falsterbo
as well as clear in the first round of both the Rolex Grand Prix in Aachen and Dinard
the pair were crowned European Champions – after five flawless rounds.
I had high expectations set for myself to be able to live up to what Dynamix deserves
“The Europeans were of course what made this year one to remember,” Guerdat says
so I had high expectations set for myself to be able to live up to what she deserves
Dynamix is a horse that most of the times jumps clear rounds
and it does not really matter to her how many rounds she jumps
so I expected the format of the Europeans would suit her
I knew that if I would be riding well
get off to a good start in the Table C and then keep a clear from there
I would have a chance to be in a good position at the end of the championship
it was her first championship – a stop on the way to Paris
our main goal – and you never know until you actually do it with them.”
“There were many reasons this gold medal meant a lot to me,” Guerdat says
it was a big relief for me to give Dynamix what she deserves
my team and her owners – have done this full journey together with her
I was really happy because the European Championship is so difficult to win: Everything counts so you can’t miss one round
I also thought that I maybe had missed my chance at winning this title – I was so close with Tepic La Silla in Donaueschingen in 2003 when I was less than one penalty point from the gold medal and finished 6th
I kind of always thought I had missed my occasion there and in the years after I have been quite far away from the individual medals; it’s been a long battle for this gold
friends and supporters in Milan – which is not too far from home – was also very special.”
Both Dynamix and Venard have been brilliant for the Swiss team this year
Guerdat did not only take the title at the Europeans this year
but he was also the rider with the most clear Nations Cup rounds in 2023 – thirteen in total
“Both Dynamix and Venard have been brilliant for the Swiss team this year,” Guerdat says
“Venard had a longer break after Geneva last year
It took a little while to get him back in the rhythm
but he jumped double clear in every Nations Cup he did this year up until the final in Barcelona where he had one rail down in the last round
and we won the Nations Cups you want to win: The home one in St
obviously Aachen – which Switzerland last won in 2002
Falsterbo – which is one of my favourite shows
as well as Dublin – which is one of the most historic Nations Cups on the circuit
These are all traditional Nations Cups you want to win once in your career
and we had them all done in one year which was pretty amazing.”
Guerdat took his third title in the Rolex IJRC Top 10 Final – on home soil in Geneva – with the 14-year-old French gelding Venard de Cerisy (Open Up Semilly x Djalisco Du Guet
“I was happy to be back in the Top 10 Final
because it’s one of the most exciting classes of the year
I was lucky to already be in it a few times
“Venard had already jumped brilliantly in Verona
where he was 2nd in the World Cup so I was quite confident that he would be good although you can always have a rail down
I know him well and the ring in Palexpo is good for him – I know he can be fast there and that was why I decided to jump him in the Top 10 Final and Dynamix in the Grand Prix
For everything Venard has done in his whole career
he really deserved a moment like this – and a title that stays in the history books
The whole team behind him was so proud that he got his moment of glory because he really
He is an unbelievable horse so I was grateful he could have this title.”
Dynamix and Venard are both owned by Guerdat’s long-time supporters Sabina Cartossi and Gianluca Agustoni – who also owned Corbinian
with whom the Swiss rider won the World Cup Final back in 2016
“Without the support of owners like Sabina and Gianluca
I could not do the sport as I do,” Guerdat says
“Over the years we have become good friends
and we share the same vision of the sport in general
I have to say that not all owners would agree to the way I do things
because I sometimes make choices where I would rather jump a Nations Cup or a show I believe has more history to it than going for more lucrative classes – and for sure there are owners who would prefer their horses to jump for the money
I am also really grateful that they follow my philosophy of the sport
we had a lot of success together and I think that proves our choices were right – I think our horses will be remembered for what they have done and won
Guerdat is quick to highlight the importance of his entire team
but for the rest the credit goes to the team at home,” Guerdat says
“We have 30-35 horses at home and fourteen employees
and they all work in the same direction – the first is the wellbeing of the horses
Everybody works hard to achieve the same goals
which in the end puts me in the spotlight – but it’s a big group of people who is a part of it
but for the rest the credit goes to the team at home
Guerdat is in the process of assembling a very exciting string of horses – which he has a lot of belief in
I have prioritized developing all my horses and this year in particular I have done many 3- and 4* shows in between to get the whole group growing
All of them have been going very well this year
but there is still a gap between Dynamix and Venard – my top two – towards the others behind them
I think in about six months I could have a fantastic stable with four-five top Grand Prix horses
but the last step is not done yet – they still need a bit longer
I enjoy the process with each of them; I really like all of them so I’m not in a rush
so I simply enjoy working with them every day.”
the Olympic Games in Paris is Guerdat’s main goal for 2024
“I want to get my two best horses ready; in case something happens with one horse
then I have another one ready to perform as well – Dynamix and Venard both have a chance to be great at the Olympics,” Guerdat says
Dynamix will start again at the Sunshine Tour in February
Dynamix will probably do The Dutch Masters in March
but for the rest I will keep them both outside to get them ready for Paris
but probably with one of my other horses – maybe Is-Minka if she feels ready
that would be with a horse that probably is not ready to win it but who will get a good experience from competing there.”
“Just for the horses and me to stay healthy
We can’t wish for anything better than we already have.”

One of the biggest mobilizations to curtail an aggressive neurological strain of Equine Herpes Virus (EHV-1) in recent equestrian history is now underway in Spain
The FEI says it is “probably the most serious outbreak in Europe for decades.”
Four horses are reported dead at the Valencia venue which was in the middle of its annual seven-week spring CSI tour
At least two of the equine fatalities have been suffered by the visiting German entourage
Eighty-four on-venue horses have clinical signs and 11 have been shipped to external clinics as far as Barcelona
Related outbreaks have been confirmed in France
amid concerns that some riders fled Valencia with potentially infected horses before it was locked-down
The Fédération Française d’Equitation (FFE) has suspended all national and international competitions
and other equine events until March 28 in response to the Spanish EHV-1 outbreak
Spanish veterinary authorities are in charge on-site at Valencia
with 21 treating veterinarians now in place
The FEI is coordinating both onsite and wider measures with the Spanish National Federation
Last week the FEI blocked 752 horses that competed at Valencia since February 1 from entering other shows until tested
and has ordered other organizers on the Iberian peninsula not to accept any horses travelling on from that tour
upwards of 4,000 FEI-registered horses from all over Europe are present in Spain and Portugal at any time
for the four main winter/spring CSI tours at Valencia
The latest FEI bulletin says: “As many of you will have seen on social media and other online media platforms
there are some very distressing images and footage of extremely sick horses in Valencia
“As this strain of EHV-1 is particularly aggressive and there are now confirmed related outbreaks in France
we remain concerned that several sick and in-contact horses left the venue before it was closed for departures and that they may spread the disease
“Although the FEI has blocked all these horses in the FEI Database until the required testing protocols have been fulfilled
the FEI has again directly contacted National Federations with horses that participated in Valencia requesting confirmation that they have contacted all their athletes that were in Valencia
that their national veterinary authorities have been informed about the outbreak and the returning horses
and that the necessary isolation of returning horses and in-contact horses has been put in place and compliance is being controlled.”
the FEI ordered extra stabling so that healthy/recovered horses can be better separated and 44 temporary stables are due from the South of France today (March 1.)
The French National Federation and the FEI have coordinated a supply of inflatable support mats to assist recumbent horses to stand
Rescue nets and emergency slings are being sourced from Switzerland
and France and Germany are supplying extra veterinarians
The FEI will be using data from this outbreak to evaluate the effectiveness of the EHV1 vaccine
The FEI added: “We are grateful for the way our community continues to come together to deal with this outbreak
This is a true example of solidarity among our National Federations in Europe working together with the FEI.”
The outbreak was first alerted on February 21 when some horses fell sick at the show
A German horse who jumped as recently as February 20 is sadly among those who have died
To date, official information has only been circulated to national federations, and published on the biosecurity section of the FEI website which is difficult to find for those not using that resource regularly
Riders took to social media to spread the word
Some platforms have removed videos of stricken horses

An Iberian power play with global flair took place in the international big tour at the 2022 CDI Jerez de la Frontera on 19 - 21 March 2022
The legendary Real Escuela Andaluza del Arte Ecuestre
one of the big four institutions dedicated to the preservation of the equestrian arts
hosted its first CDI in front of its impressive main building in 2015 and saw rider return in 2016
A five-year break then happened and the CDI was relisted on the FEI calendar in 2021
This year the venue hosts two CDI's back to back from 19 March till 27 March
attracting a predominantly Spanish-Portuguese field of competitors
but the competition also proved a magnet for French
The international Grand Prix class drew a field of 34 strong and turned into an Iberian powerful with PRE's and Lusitano's making their mark
as well as riders who close ties to the peninsula
Portuguese based Brazilian Joao Victor Marcari Oliva steered the Portuguese owned 13-year old Lusitano breeding stallion Escorial Horsecampline (by Spartacus CSM x Edo) to victory with a 72.696% score
They pipped the Spanish born French rider Morgan Barbançon on her long-time number one
the 16-year old Oldenburg stallion Sir Donnerhall II (by Sandro Hit x Donnerhall)
who finished by just a hair's breadth behind the winners with 72.674%
Vasco Mira Godinho on Garrett"Escorial is an amazing horse," said Joao
"He took me to the podium twice at CDI 3* in Jerez
Without them the results would not be the same."
Portuguese Vasco Mira Godinho continued his success story started at the 2022 CDI Cascais on 25-27 February aboard Christine Jacoberger's Lusitano licensed stallion Garrett (by Unico x Go Go)
Godinho and Garrett landed third place in the Grand Prix with a personal best score of 72.674% and went on to win the Grand Prix Special with 71.830%
After a four-year absence from the Portuguese team when he last rode Bariloche at the 2018 World Equestrian Games
Godinho has now put himself back in the race for team consideration
The Kur to Music was won by Morgan Barbançon and Sir Donnerhall II with 77.185%
edging out Spanish Olympic team rider José Antonio Garcia Mena on Sorento (by Sandro Bedo x Florestan) with 76.185 (Spain) and Marcari Oliva on Escorial with 75.095%
"I couldn’t be happier," Morgan said after winning the freestyle
"It's a great preparation for the World Cup finals."
Ukrainian flag flyingThe ground jury for the Grand Prix consisted of Mariano Santos Redondo (ESP)
produced scores between 71.739% and 75.109%
Garcia Mena and Sorento scored between 69.022 and 75.978

Angel Rodriguez Peinado even received 64.674% to 71.739%
Most surprisingly Olympian Claudia Castilla Ruiz and Lario got 62.174% from Roudier and 68.152% from Eisenahrdt
The CDI Jerez de la Frontera also saw the rise of new Spanish horse power at the highest level
Teia Hernandez Vila on Romero de TrujilloTeia Hernandez Vila made a whopping international Grand Prix debut with the 11-year old PRE stallion Romero de Trujillo (by Enganoso VI x Cantaor)
They posted no less than 71.565% on the leader board after their first CDI Grand Prix test
though the judges were divided (69.130 - 74.674%)
the grey Romero became the PRE world champion at its annual breed show
He made his national Grand Prix debut in May 2021
French Corentin Pottier is not a freshman to international dressage sport
having worked his way up through the youth divisions
However he is now a senior and making a clear push for power aboard the KWPN stallion Gotilas (by Totilas x Ferro) in an attempt to ride himself into the eye line of the French team selectors
The pair made its international Grand Prix debut in the summer of 2021 and Jerez was their first international of the year
They placed 6th in the Grand Prix (69.478% and third in the Special (68.979%)
Gotilas was bred by Unlimited stables” in Lunteren
and sold as foal named Gotitas de Amour US at the Midden-Nederland auction
The 2022 CDI Jerez de la Frontera also saw some old
familiar faces back on the block: the original Jerez duo that for years competed on the Spanish teal at all major Championships
Ignacio Ramblo on Eclipse XCVIIIThe 64-year old Rafael Soto de Andrade was a fixture on the Spanish team between 1995 and 2006
and last competed internationally in 2011 after which a long break from competition sport followed

There is little to say when results speak for themselves
Spanish Under 25 rider Alejandro Oliva has been undefeated since he began his career at this level with Decor
The student of Juan Antonio Jiménez has been a stand-out rider in the international Under 25 classes at CDI's in Spain and been adding great results to his tally
broken records without stopping and above all have gone from much to even more
Le Mans and Las Cadenas have been the places where their light has shone bright
Alejandro riding Decor is a winning machine
Last weekend his pursuit for gold continued
ending with a double win and two new personal records of 73.284% in the Intermediate II and 73.590% in the GP U25 at the 2022 CDI Camarma de Esteruelas
Alejandro and DecorThe combination has been unstoppable
On 19 March 2022 they first tested the waters in the U25 at the CDI in Jerez
and from that moment his winning streak began
His eight victories are quite a feat; very few athletes can boast that number of victories in a row at the international level
Alejandro is down to earth and aware of the great horse he has
The objective this season is the 2022 European Under 25 Championship in Pilisjaszfalu
an 11-year old Hanoverian gelding by Detroit x Herzensdieb
which originally came from Germany from horse dealers Kerstin Klieber and Stefan Sandbrink
He was previously competed by Joseph Robert Hunt and brought to Grand Prix level by Carlos Bayo Calvo
He is owned by Sylvia Fort Brescia De Mulder in partnership with trainer Jimenez
Alejandro describes him as a very energetic horse
who always wants to work and give his best
At the 2022 CDI Camarma de Esteruelas“What I like most about him is precisely that vitality he has
in competition he makes me want to give my all," Alejandro explained
"I've been riding him since the end of January this year
At first it felt like a bit of responsibility because he is a high quality horse and had already achieved great scores in the Grand Prix with Carlos (Bayo Calvo)
but with patience and work everything is turning out as he would have never dreamed of
I am really grateful to Juan Antonio for giving me this opportunity and being able to enjoy him.”
When asked what these eight victories make him feel like
the truth is that I have really enjoyed all of them
but perhaps the most special was Inter II in Jerez de la Frontera
we had only been together for a short time
I was intrigued by what the judges would think
It was nice to debut the horse with those results and in such a special place as the Real Escuela.”
the Under 25 category has been able to mark its competition season highlight with a European Championship
the members of the Spanish team were Juan Matute with Don Diego
Pablo Gómez Molina with Tarpan Ymas and Erik Balasch with Dorado
while Pablo Gómez and Juan Matute were among the top 10 of the Kur
the Spanish participation has been very interesting
In 2017 Matute won bronze again with Quantico and in 2019
Diego Martínez del Moral qualified for the Freestyle
and in 2020 that luck befell Ruben Mengual
A look at the FEI Under 25 World Ranking shows that a Spaniard is leading: Sergio García Bermejo on Hexagon's Innuendo
