Although official identification is still pending, the president of the Spain Dh cycling club - and one of Opperman's closest friends - Andrés Tapia, told SUR that it was the missing man's own friends who found his body in the Calarejo Chico area, and were able to recognise both the man and his bicycle. "We knew he could not have survived, but we were not going to stop looking for him until we found him," his friend said.
The Guardia Civil launched a ground and air search operation on 5 February, when they became aware of the disappearance of Opperman, who had gone to spend a few days in a rural house in the Sierra area.
Spain Dh, a sports organisation to which Opperman had belonged for years, has since mobilised dozens of friends and hundreds of volunteers, many of them with knowledge of the terrain and specialised in rescue work. To do this, they had drawn up a map of the routes that the missing man used to take in the mountains.
"We have to thank all the people who have helped us to find him," adds Tapia, pointing out that they have had the support of canine units specialised in rescues from Olula del Río (Almeria) and several forest firefighters who have joined the search parties while off duty.
Opperman, 50, was born in the state of Colorado, although he had lived in the Churriana district of Malaga for many years. He worked as a professional mechanic and his friends emphasised his great love of sport, especially cycling and hiking.
As stated by his own friends, he has always been one of the most active cyclists in Spain Dh. "He was a nice guy, he enjoyed himself, he was sporty, healthy... he really enjoyed practising sport in a group; even though he didn't understand much Spanish, he joined in with everything," added Tapia.

The cycling world is mourning the loss of Matt Opperman, the U.S. rider and Yeti / Shimano EP Enduro Team mechanic who went missing in late January while exploring the Segura de la Sierra in southern Spain. After an exhaustive 22-day search, Spanish authorities confirmed that Opperman’s body was discovered alongside his bike near Peña del Olivar in Siles, Jaén.
What began as an intense search effort, led by volunteers, the Civil Guard and specialized rescue teams came to a somber conclusion when a group of volunteers located a bike and body matching Opperman’s description. Authorities were called in to recover and airlift the remains for an autopsy, which later confirmed his identity. While the official cause of death is still undetermined, officials have ruled out foul play.
Opperman–who was Emily Batty’s mechanic during much of her time on Trek–had a passion for cycling and the mountains. He wasn’t just a rider—he was someone who lived for the sport, for adventure and for the trails. SpainDH reflected on his impact, saying: “Matt’s friendship, his adventurous spirit and his energy will live on in every route and on every trail we travel.”
Our condolences to his friends and family.

He was identified by the civil guard police who ordered him to haul the fridge back up and recycle it in a proper manner
The police filmed the retrieval which was also posted online
The offender was fined €45,000 (£41,000) and sacked from his job at the waste management firm which also faces possible sanctions of up to €300,000
Another video has emerged of him disposing of a washing machine in a similar manner

Water-saving measures are now in effect in various towns across Almeria, including Albox
have been introduced by several municipal councils in response to concerns about dwindling water resources
Although the Andalusian Government announced these measures on March 27
their implementation varies among municipalities
while others are still in the process of doing so
residents are prohibited from filling or refilling private pools with drinking water until further notice
This restriction aims to prevent unnecessary water use
which is particularly noticeable with pool filling
Personal water consumption is also under scrutiny
with a limit of 200 litters per person per day
This restriction will be enforced by monitoring water supplied to households and collective networks
Any excess usage may result in general water cuts or pressure reductions
irrigation allocations must prioritise human consumption needs
irrigation allowances will be reduced to ensure an adequate water supply for residents
These restrictions mark a significant response to the severe drought affecting the region
While they are currently in effect in some municipalities
there may be further changes pending a review by the Drought Management Commission
This ongoing process highlights the importance of adapting to environmental challenges and conserving water resources for the future

Municipalities across the Almanzora Valley and Eastern Almeria are bringing in water restrictions due to escalating drought conditions
Among the latest to join this initiative is Vera, in the Levante area. It follows other localities such as Albox
and Lubrin in imposing stringent water usage measures
incuding a daily limit of 200 litres per person
The Junta de Andalucia has officially declared the region
as being in a ‘severe and exceptional drought’
A decree has been issued demanding ‘responsible, supportive and efficient’ use of water
along with managers of public and private entities
are urged to check for leaks and apply all feasible measures to minimise unnecessary water consumption
and pools in tourist accommodations registered with the Junta de Andalucia
Further restrictions include the closure of public showers and the prohibition of car washing
Ornamental fountains without a closed water circuit are also banned
The guidelines do allow the use of non-potable water for essential irrigation of public spaces and golf courses
limited to 200 cubic metres per hectare monthly
Local Police are empowered to monitor and ensure compliance
This collective effort underscores the critical need to conserve water amidst the worsening drought situation

Almost immediately I was reminded of one of the Triple’s greatest assets: it’s simply so easy to ride
The riding position was natural and reasonably roomy
The 675-cc triple engine was smooth and well balanced
pulling sweetly if not particularly strongly from low down
kicking through the midrange and feeling enthusiastic and eager to rev
For so many road situations that 105 PS output is just right: enough to make the Triple exciting
yet not so much that you’re reluctant to wind back the throttle for fear of getting into trouble
on some gloriously deserted and twisty roads in the Sierra de los Filabres mountains
In particular the Triumph was fantastic fun on the A-349 that twists over the Sierra between Olula del Rio and Tabernas
It surged forward on the short straights with its addictive intake howl
the programmable blue lights on its tacho flashing as the revs approached the 13,000-RPM red-line through the gears
At speed the wind tugged at my neck muscles despite some welcome protection from the fly-screen
The top speed is about 225 km/h and the Triumph was superbly entertaining even well below that figure
Especially because it was so good in the bends
The improvement over the Street Triple R that I’d ridden to the airport the day before was dramatic — but that was because my bike’s rear tyre is a bit worn and there was a huge kit-bag strapped to the seat
but I suspect a back-to-back test would show the new R quicker to turn and a bit more stable when on its side
sweeping through a fast turn behind a hard-riding test pilot
I was initially surprised to discover that Triumph had set up the bikes quite soft
midway between the Standard and Comfort settings in the owner’s manual
The piggy-back Kayaba rear shock’s spring is about 10 per cent softer than the previous model’s
That helped soak up bumps really efficiently
but for hard riding felt just a fraction vague for my 85 kg of weight
