A Brigham Young University graduate student from Japan who had his visa revoked — seemingly because of an old fishing violation — has now had his visa reinstated
BYU Ph.D. student Suguru Onda got word Friday about the change, his immigration attorney Adam Crayk told KSL TV
“He is reinstated as if it was never revoked,” Crayk said
Onda — a husband and father of five — had experienced only one legal hiccup during his six years of study in the United States
He was reportedly cited for harvesting more fish than his fishing license allowed during a 2019 outing with his Latter-day Saint church group
who is a year away from earning his BYU doctorate in computer science
received notice that his student visa was being revoked
He is counted among the two dozen or more international students attending Utah colleges and universities who have had their visa revoked in recent weeks
“I was surprised,” Onda earlier told the Deseret News
I’m seeing so much news about (student visa revocations); but I didn’t expect it to happen to me.”
The termination reason on Onda’s visa revocation notice
“Otherwise failing to maintain status.” And the explanation said
“Individual identified in criminal records check and/or has had their visa revoked
Crayk earlier told the Deseret News that his client went on a 2019 fishing activity with his Latter-day Saint ward
“He didn’t catch a fish — but because he was the organizer or the face of the activity
(Onda) was cited for harvesting more than their license permitted.”
we’re dismissing this’ — and it was dismissed.”
But Crayk believes that the church fishing incident
linked Onda’s name with a potential criminal case and led to his international student visa being flagged and revoked
Onda’s attorney said his “low-key” client has no history of posting politically charged content
BYU told Onda he could work remotely on his dissertation if he had to leave the Provo campus
A member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
Onda has been studying at BYU for the past six years
He said the school has told him he could work remotely on his dissertation if he has to leave the Provo campus
Onda said he was planning to stay in the United States for at least a few years after graduation
He added his family felt the support of their local congregation
“A lot of families have reached out to me and brought us food and tried to offer help,” Onda said
“We couldn’t do this without their help — so I really appreciate all of the community
Spencer Cox said on Thursday that his office had reached out to the Trump administration for more information about the dozens of international students at Utah campuses who have recently had their visas revoked
“We’ve asked them to give us a little bit of a heads-up when these things are happening
We’d like to understand better what the criteria are for those changes,” Cox said
The governor noted that some of the international students had criminal backgrounds “that we were not aware of; that the universities were not aware of.”
“that does not appear to be the case — and so we would very much like to figure that out.”
Cox said in the past that President Donald Trump has talked about the importance of attracting “the most talented and brightest” from other countries to the United States
“We know how important those visas are and how important immigrants are to building our economy.”

SALT LAKE CITY — A Japanese doctorate student at Brigham Young University will now be able to stay in the U.S. after his visa was revoked earlier this month
BYU student Suguru Onda is a year away from finishing his doctorate
He’s married and has five kids who all live here in Utah.
When he received word that his visa was revoked
the notice read “Individual identified in criminal records check and/or has had their VISA revoked.”
just a few speeding tickets and a citation for a catch and release violation on a fishing trip with family six years ago.
He was given 15 days to return to Japan or face deportation
Onda received word that his visa was reinstated
“He is reinstated as if it was never revoked,” said Adam Crayk
Crayk said the news of the reinstated visa came just minutes after they filed a lawsuit in federal court. BYU had already received word that his status was clear
There was no negotiation or communication with immigration officials involved with the reinstatement
“All I know is BYU received a call (and) he’s now reinstated.”
This means Onda will not have to go back to Japan
Crayk said Onda was “overjoyed” at the news
the other students involved in the federal lawsuit had not yet received the same news as Onda

Festivalgoers packed the blanket area of the Napa Valley Expo on May 26
the third and final day of the 2024 BottleRock music festival
Fans held the Mexican flag and cheered during the Gabito Ballesteros show on the last day of the inaugural Festival La Onda June 2 at the Napa Valley Expo
Organizers of the BottleRock and La Onda festivals hosted a Napa forum Tuesday to update residents on event details and listen to their concerns
With Napa's two most famous music festivals less than a month away
the organizers of BottleRock Napa Valley and Festival La Onda reached out to their nearest neighbors — those living near the Napa Valley Expo
About 30 residents gathered at the Expo for their annual meeting with leaders of Latitude 38 Entertainment
the production company that has mounted BottleRock since its second edition in 2014 and last year debuted the Latin music showcase La Onda
The 12th BottleRock will take place on the Expo grounds May 23-25
followed by the second La Onda on May 31 and June 1
particularly those most directly affected by the festivals
to be updated on topics ranging from road access and street closures to trash pickup and noise control
it allowed residents to voice their concerns directly and in public to the event organizers
ahead of the arrival of tens of thousands of spectators each day in the Oxbow area surrounding the Third Street fairground
“We absolutely understand that we are doing this right in the middle of the city of Napa,” said Justin Dragoo
one of Latitude 38’s three principal leaders at the forum Tuesday
“We appreciate you and will always try to listen to members of the community
We’ll be here as long as it takes to answer all of your questions.”
Dragoo detailed the schedule for both festivals
beginning with sound-check hours for BottleRock from 10 a.m
because it is far earlier than at other festivals such as Coachella
There will be minimal noise as the festival grounds are transitioned from BottleRock to La Onda
primarily because most changes will be to décor rather than any stages or heavy equipment
with activity expected between noon and 6 p.m
with the festival itself wrapping up at 10 p.m
Representatives from the California Highway Patrol and Napa Police also attended the forum to detail road closures and inform residents on how to leave and enter their homes during the festivals
Kristofer Jenny highlighted a new safety measure law enforcement agencies will use this year — Meridian Archer Barriers
The large barriers are used throughout California at venues like the Rose Bowl in Pasadena to effectively combat any intentional or unintentional incidents of automobiles entering pedestrian areas
will once again partner with the state Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control to ensure they are prepared to handle makeshift bars that occasionally pop up during the festival
A slide highlighting the festivals’ economic impact was also shown during the meeting
According to financial studies conducted by Latitude 38
BottleRock and La Onda together have a direct economic impact of more than $115 million in Napa and surrounding areas
organizers and law enforcement officers fielded a variety of questions from residents
who shared issues they’ve had during the festival
Those issues ranged from noisy generators to trash collection
which Dragoo said organizers appreciated hearing and would be addressing
“The festival takes place within the city and
the community shoulders a lot while it’s taking place,” said Latitude 38 co-principal Dave Graham
“This meeting is a vehicle for their concerns to be heard in public
Napa residents with other concerns or questions about BottleRock and La Onda are encouraged to email festival organizers at info@bottlerocknapa.com

Despite only having two speeding tickets and a fishing violation that was dismissed
Japanese national Suguru Onda is around a year away from completing his doctoral degree at Brigham Young University (BYU) in Utah
as he was recently informed that his Form I-20 — a certificate of eligibility for F visa status – was being revoked without notice
He’s subsequently been ordered to leave the States before the end of April
The reason for the revocation being served: Onda has been identified in a criminal records check
the Japanese man only has two speeding tickets on his record
in addition to a catch and release violation from a fishing trip six years ago
Speaking to KSL NewsRadio
Crayk said it was an automatic revocation issued by a computer
“It’s turned out that the Department of Homeland Security has used a tech bot to simply go out and search,” he said
“And anything that comes back with any type of criminally related conduct… it issued a revocation
It was never subject to human review or human eyes.”
As the action is so arbitrary and capricious
Crayk revealed that he is filing a temporary restraining order (TRO) in court to challenge the validity of the revocation
“I feel helpless,” he told KSL NewsRadio’s Adam Small
Onda added that BYU has been very supportive
The situation is also proving very stressful for his family
They now don’t know whether they’ll be able to finish the school year over there.
Onda is one of many international students to have had their visas revoked without notice in recent weeks. “Right now, there are reports of at least 800 visas being revoked or students’ records being terminated,” Miriam Feldblum, president and CEO of the Presidents’ Alliance, told United Press International (UPI)
She added that it’s “because of retroactive sweeping of all kinds of criminal databases that the government has access to.”
candidate from Japan has had his international student visa revoked — perhaps because of a fishing violation from years ago
Suguru Onda — a husband and father of five — has had only one legal hiccup during his six years of study in the United States
He is counted among the two dozen or more international students attending Utah colleges and universities who have had their visa revoked in recent weeks — and have been directed to leave the country without delay
“I was surprised,” Onda told the Deseret News
Termination reason: “Otherwise failing to maintain status.”
Explanation: “Individual identified in criminal records check and/or has had their visa revoked
Crayk told the Deseret News that his client went on a 2019 fishing activity with his Latter-day Saint ward
Crayk said that traditionally international students were in jeopardy of having the visas revoked when they are connected with aggravated felonies
crimes involving “moral turpitude” and offenses related to
protective order violations and certain domestic violence offenses
“Something that’s much more significant than keeping an extra fish,” Crayk added
Onda’s attorney added his “low-key” client is married
the father of five children and has no history of posting politically charged content
Crayk is concerned that the Department of Homeland Security system is revoking international student visas involving minor criminal cases such as Onda’s without being verified “with human eyes.”
He is also concerned affected international students are not being offered opportunities to represent themselves and present their side of the story
Crayk said he will likely be filing a temporary restraining order in the coming days on Onda’s behalf
A class action suit could be next as he continues to work with other local clients affected by similar international student visa revocations
“A lot of these kids don’t even want their names used
They want to use pseudonyms because they really are afraid to death that ICE is going to come and get them,” he said
Even as his attorney explores legal options to keep him and his family in the United States
Onda is making preparations for a possible return to his Japanese homeland
“I’ve started packing everything in case I need to leave,” he said
Onda added his family is doing as well as might be expected as they face an unexpected disruption
“They’re kind of sad about it but there’s nothing that they can do
He added his family is enjoying the support of their local Latter-day Saint congregation

BYU grad student Suguru Onda in a BYU research lab
BY ADAM SMALL
Suguru Onda has been living legally in the United States and said he has one more year before completing his doctoral degree
told KSL NewsRadio the federal government revoked his visa without prior notice due to what the government said was “otherwise failing to maintain status.”
The explanation section of that notice reads
“Individual identified in criminal records check and/or has had their VISA revoked.”
Onda was given 15 days to go back to Japan or face the risk of deportation
“I feel helpless,” Onda told KSL NewsRadio
Onda was given these orders despite the fact that he has no legitimate criminal history
Crayk said he only has two speeding tickets on his record
as well as a catch and release violation from a fishing trip in 2019
which was dismissed with prejudice in court
Crayk told Dave & Dujanovic that Onda has little to no social media footprint
He said he does not have a history of speaking out about politics or participating in protests; rather
Crayk said he’s learned through court filings that the government is using AI technology to locate any criminal activity amongst student visa holders and revoke their visas
He said this is being done without human cross-references
Attorney’s Office for comment on the matter
but has not heard back at the time of publication
He said they are all now having to pack for a flight across the world
not knowing if they’ll actually have to leave
he said what’s happening to him is unfair and it’s ruined his family’s plans
“We were planning to go back to Japan in the summer … we have no clue what to do,” Onda said
Onda said his children are worried about the situation and don’t know if they’ll get to finish the school year here in the U.S
he said he and his wife do have family in Japan they can lean on
and he said BYU is working to accommodate his school work through this situation
like many other Utah college students in the same boat
Crayk said he is fighting to allow Onda to stay in the country and to get his visa reinstated
but ultimately that decision will be made by a judge
According to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement
a Form I-20 is issued “to nonimmigrant students who have been accepted for enrollment at a U.S
educational institution certified by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program.”
It is described as a “critically important” document for non-immigrant students
a student in the United States for purposes of study only and not immigration

West Coast Fisheries Infrastructure Waxes and Wanes: Part 1
Shoreside fisheries support decreases following limited fishing seasons
Editor’s note: This is the first of a three-part series on the struggles facing shoreside infrastructure that supports West Coast fisheries
submitted by Pacific Fishery Management Council Executive Director Merrick Burden
Parts 2 and 3 will be published later this week.
Stand on a dock in any West Coast fishing town and you will see similar things: worn wood
these are just some of the more obvious signs of an underlying problem that is making fishing off the West Coast exceptionally difficult: The decay and loss of shoreside infrastructure.
Infrastructure is everything that supports a healthy fishery
It means docks that need to be maintained in the harsh elements; harbors that need to be regularly dredged; fuel docks to keep vessels moving; bait suppliers; and support businesses to sell and store the gear that a fishing boat needs
It means ice to chill the fish; a dock and hoist to land them; a buyer to buy them; a processor to filet and package them; cold storage; and a distribution network and reliable markets
and repair services for when things go wrong
The past few years have been rough for West Coast fisheries.

and had to either wait for high tide to return or seek other harbours
"I'd never seen the tide that low as it was yesterday," said Ian Gauthier

San Francisco artist La Doña released "Corrido Palestina" on her 2024 album. (Beth La Berge/KQED)This story was reported for K Onda KQED, a monthly newsletter focused on the Bay Area’s Latinx community. Click here to subscribe
Oakland artist DELACiiO’s latest EP features a corrido titled “R94,” which tells the story of a teenager who hustles to make money
One verse contains the following lyrics in Spanish: “En las calles de East Oakland / Yo me he ganado el respeto / Muchos dan la mano /Pero te ponen el dedo (But they snitch on you).” In English
it translates to: “On the streets of East Oakland / I have earned respect / Many shake your hand / But they snitch on you.”
The song is one of many corridos that have come out of the Bay Area music scene since the 1960s
Corridos are a type of a narrative ballad — a song that tells a story — that is one of the most cherished traditions within the genre of Mexican regional music
The 28-year-old DELACiiO, whose actual name is Ignacio Lopez Jr., started rapping as a teenager but changed gears to Mexican music
“Once I started dabbling with corridos
natural and organic because I was writing what was going on around me in my neighborhood and in Oakland where I’m from,” he said
I wanted to know more about how corridos have evolved and why younger generations think they are cool
so I talked to three Bay Area musicians who have recorded corridos
as well as a UC Berkeley professor who studies corridos as a tool for teaching literacy to young people
as it emerged in the late 1800s in Northern Mexico
oral storytelling and story sharing,” said San Francisco artist La Doña
whose real name is Cecilia Peña-Govea
grew up listening to and performing corridos with her family’s band
especially during times of social upheaval
is to witness and to document,” she said
“One of my favorite things about corridos is that it takes you into a time and place
Cati de los Ríos taught high school in Southern California to students who were mostly immigrants or children of immigrants who spoke Spanish at home
often treated those students as if they hadn’t been exposed to literature or literary traditions
when in fact many of them were voracious consumers of corridos
She saw an opportunity to use corridos to teach literature and storytelling
“I was so thirsty for materials,” to use in classrooms
She created them through academic research
earning a doctorate from Columbia University
She now teaches courses on literacy and multilingual education at UC Berkeley
“I felt this desire to enter the world of teacher education
and prepare future teachers to not just acknowledge these literacy practices
but sanction them as a legitimate academic practice,” she said
is the lead singer of the Bay Area band Suenatron
which blends a variety of musical genres from cumbia to norteño
The band plans to release a corrido later this year
titled “El Robo,” about a son who turns to crime to pay for his ailing mother’s medical care
“Bienvenidos,” explores the kinds of welcomes immigrants receive when they arrive in the U.S
especially those popularized by his father’s group
a legendary band that formed in San José in the late 1960s
Some of Los Tigres’ biggest hits include “Contrabando Y Traición,” a story about a scorned woman who takes revenge
and “La Jaula de Oro,” about a man who feels trapped in the United States after his children assimilate
I would see people bumping rap songs; now I see young kids bumping corridos
people were embarrassed to talk about corridos,” said Hernandez
“I like how corridos have evolved and how they are becoming something new and fresh
This younger generation in the United States
that’s how they connect with the culture
DELACiiO agrees that there was a time when corridos were seen as music for family parties and parents
“I compare corridos to reggaetón
Reggaetón had to break the walls and the barriers to get a worldwide platform and be accepted by everybody,” he said
“I feel like corrido is doing the same thing
You have artists like Natanael Cano and Peso Pluma that cross boundaries.”
Cano and Peso Pluma are known for corridos tumbados
a fusion of American hip-hop and trap music with Mexican norteño and banda rhythms
“When I am doing some research in the East Bay at different high schools
and I hear Southeast Asian kids blasting Peso Pluma
I hear African-American kids blasting Peso Pluma
the acoustic guitars — that sound really speaks to a lot of young people in different ways
“But I’m also seeing for the first time a lot kids saying like
my culture is at the center for once.’”
De los Ríos said that while corridos are a valuable art form, some go beyond telling a story to condoning and glorifying misogyny, crime and violence. The current president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, recently called for an investigation of a musical group that displayed the photo of a notorious cartel leader during a concert
have also been a powerful tool for challenging authority
“My favorite corrido that I’ve written is called ‘Corrido Palestina,’ and it’s about the genocide happening in Palestine
and it really takes to heart that role of truth telling
witnessing and documenting,” said La Doña
The song talks calls for a cease fire and ends with “Viva Palestina.” After she released the song last fall
blowback was swift from supporters of Israel
I have lost contact with certain people in the industry
but it’s also not a surprise.”
The fact that the song received pushback demonstrates the power of corridos today
She hopes young artists continue producing corridos and reinventing the art form
“Representation of any type of Latinx stories is really important within the pop culture canon,” she said
“I also see a lot of opportunity for diversifying narratives like having more female stories
having like a lot of different experiences being reflected in a genre that’s typically been very machista

Greenwood Village resident Heidi Nafman-Onda personally knows the health risks
she was diagnosed with stage 3A lung cancer and given a grave diagnosis
"The really scary thing about this was I had no respiratory symptoms whatsoever
This was an accidental catch," Nafman-Onda told Denver7
As a health enthusiast and person who does not smoke
her diagnosis filled her with fear and confusion
Her son encouraged her to test the radon levels in their home and they found the levels were twice the actionable level the EPA recommends
Heidi was treated with immunotherapy infusions and since 2020 has shown no evidence of cancer
Heidi and her husband, Dr. Pierre Onda, started the nonprofit White Ribbon Projectto raise awareness about lunch cancer and change public perceptions about the disease
More than half of homes in Colorado have radon levels above the EPA action level and officials from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) say 500 lung cancer deaths in the state each year are attributed to Radon

09:36am ESTShareSaveCommentCarlo Ancelotti returned to Real Madrid in 2021
Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti's future lies away from the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu after reports that the Italian has told the Spanish soccer giant that he will leave his current role as head coach at the conclusion of the 2024/25 campaign
which he extended last year to extend until the summer of 2026
It is now expected that he will depart the club after the FIFA Club World Cup in the summer of 2025
The report states that the decision is final
regardless of any success in the remaining months of the season
Real Madrid is currently leader of the La Liga standings
while also still in the Copa del Rey and UEFA Champions League
with the FIFA Club World Cup not set to kick off until the summer
The pressure on Carlo Ancelotti has mounted in recent weeks
Liverpool and Athletic Club in November and December
combined with two heavy Clásico defeats to FC Barcelona in the league and Spanish Super Cup final
the Italian has remained insistent that he would see out his contract and has avoided going into more detail on his future
but doing it here is a bit easier than in other places
I’m happy here and I don’t think about my future
I still have two years left on my contract
but could coach in another country after turning down the chance to lead the Brazilian national team last season
The leading candidate to replace Carlo Ancelotti is former Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso
The Spaniard is currently in charge of German team Bayer Leverkusen
who won the Bundesliga last season and currently sit four points behind Bayern Munich in the standings
Alonso extended his contract in Germany to 2026 last year
but was widely expected to leave Leverkusen after a dream first full season
he oversaw a historic campaign in which the team went unbeaten for a full season in the league for the first time in history
he is in pole position to replace the man who once coached him at the Bernabéu
He played 236 times for Real Madrid between 2009 and 2014
joining from Liverpool and eventually departing to end his career at Bayern Munich half a decade later
a European Super Cup and a Spanish Super Cup

Lee County has been striving to make housing more affordable
another complex — one with a 99-year commitment to workforce housing — broke ground in North Fort Myers
Onda Housing Group ceremoniously began work on Bayshore Pines
a 180-unit community at 5361 Bayshore Road
said his group has more than 2,000 units in development
“These developments are for working class people and families making under $65,000 per year
with plenty of room for the family,” Cribbs said
“I’m excited to bring this important project to North Fort Myers.”
Bayshore Pines will provide affordable housing for qualified Lee County residents
with rent on a two-bedroom set to be about $1,200 per month as opposed to $2,000 per month for a unit at the current market rate
The complex also will be elevated an additional four feet above flood plain to reduce the risk of flooding and block construction
“We’re building for the long term
We’re expecting it to be affordable for 99 years
We’ve committed to doing that with Florida housing,” Cribbs said
“This is going to be a real market driver to the community.”
The total construction cost is about $70 million
Onda secured $17 million in disaster recovery funds from Lee County from Hurricane Ian
The state added $3.2 million in tax credits
Florida Housing Finance Corporation delivered $33 million in bonds
Citi Community Capital and RBC Community Investments
who is on the board of directors on the Florida Housing Finance Corporation
the state’s affordable housing agency
said this project will serve a much-in-need group
“They’re making 60 percent of the area’s median income or less
With the disparity of what people are earning and what they can afford
we need a correction and the only way to do that is more units,” Benson said
The complex is expected to be completed some time next summer
Applications will be accepted in the months before opening
Benson said it is advisable that applications are put in ASAP
as previous affordable housing projects have seen applications exceed units as much as tenfold
“We have a multi-billion-dollar problem as a state
The governor has filled the need to get us out of this hole
But it’s a big hole we got ourselves into and it’s going to take a while to get out,” Benson said

People often share with him their fears of deportation as President Donald Trump takes office once again
Luis Lamas was sitting in a storage closet behind his coffee stand — Café La Onda — in Woodburn
he had already wiped the counters and washed the dishes
The coffee stand is inside the food court-style Metropolis Marketplace downtown. Lamas is a familiar face in a diverse downtown where many of the businesses are Latino-owned, most store fronts have Spanish signs in their windows and almost two-thirds of the city’s residents are Latino or Hispanic
“I’m like a therapist sometimes,” he said in Spanish
when customers walked in and made small-talk
he’s noticed a shift in the tone of those chats
but there is also a resignation,” Lamas said
It’s a familiar sentiment. During the first Trump administration, communities across the U.S. saw an increase in immigration enforcement. In Woodburn, officials worked to build trust with community members as U.S
Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers investigated and made arrests in the area
OPB spoke with a number of Woodburn residents who said they’ve felt tension building over the past several months
Lamas said fear and anxiety over arrests loom once again
Before Lamas immigrated from Mexico to the U.S
he worked an office job at a construction company that had contracts with the Mexican government
But when the administration changed in 2018 to then-President Andrés Manuel López Obrador
his company lost the contract and Lamas lost his job
His family owned a small clothing store that kept them afloat for a while
He’d work in roofing under the scorching Texas sun
watching men get sick from the heat and then get back to work
He pruned almond trees in the San Joaquin Valley of California
and drove long distances to work in nurseries across Oregon
A mural near North Front Street in Woodburn
The city of about 30,000 is made up largely of immigrant Mexican or Latino residents
“I had never done anything like that in Mexico,” he said
you’d feel pain sometimes all the way to your fingertips.”
“I’ve become more attuned to other people’s pain,” he said
or who to ask for help because they arrive with fear.”
those fears now include increased immigration enforcement from the Trump administration
Whenever the topic comes up at the coffee shop
Lamas said he gets a wide variety of thoughts
I’ll sell and go back to Mexico,’” he said
It’s the only thing that worries me the most
Another man recently told Lamas he didn’t know anything about the increased immigration enforcement and plans for mass deportations from the new administration
Early on in the first Trump administration
people in Woodburn described heightened attention from immigration enforcement
In 2017, one month after Trump took office, two buses of farmworkers heading to harvest flowers were stopped near Woodburn as part of “a targeted enforcement operation.”
Eleven people were detained
and seven were taken to an immigration detention center in Tacoma
residents of the predominantly Latino town of Woodburn
meet to talk about increased detentions by federal immigration agents
The meeting was held in the offices of PCUN
a union that represents farmworkers and others and which is housed in a former church
these community members are facing similar threats
After that raid, people in Woodburn reported a significant downturn in business and widespread fear
“That sent a chilling effect in our community
Children were not showing up to school,” said Reyna Lopez
executive director of Pineros y Campesinos Unidos del Noroeste (PCUN) — an advocacy group for Oregon farmworkers
seeing an unmarked white van or unfounded claims on social media can set people on edge
“It’s really hard to trust what people are seeing on social media or even what they’re hearing
They’re really looking for trusted information
the executive director of a farm worker union known as PCUN — an acronym in Spanish for Pine Workers and Farmers United of the Northwest — at the union's headquarters in Woodburn
Woodburn’s Education Association and a network of dozens of other Latino and immigrant advocacy groups have coalesced to put together a wide range of resources like “know your rights” meetings
legal services and training rapid response teams ready help families if or when there is a raid
“Another thing we’re asking folks to do is some [contingency] planning
If it is the case that you’re not here tomorrow
what happens to your children who might be citizens and are in local public school
“That kind of planning is really hard and it’s not an easy conversation to have
Woodburn city officials said they’ve taken some of the lessons they learned from the first Trump administration to engage with the community
“We really want the community to feel safe,” said Scott Derickson
“We try to mitigate unreasonable fear in our community and encourage people to access services and resources that we offer as a local government without fear.”
The city has intentionally met with local farmworker advocacy groups and religious institutions to let people know about the role of city government
and the programs and services available to people without fear of arrests
said it’s common for his office to respond to a call from someone who might be undocumented
“It’s understandable that people do have a fear
“Our message is: Please [do] not fear local law enforcement
We cannot have people who are victims of crimes afraid to call the police.”
Oregon’s sanctuary laws prohibit local or state police authorities from asking about a person’s immigration status or sharing information between public entities and federal immigration officials
“The city has no desire to take on federal responsibilities,” he said
“People aren’t going to be subject to immigration policies in City Hall if they need to come to City Hall or the library or our schools
We don’t want people to retract from the community because of unfounded fear.”
Oregon’s sanctuary law is already facing challenges. A three-page memo sent this week from the U.S
attorneys across the country to investigate
local officials who refuse to follow the new administration’s immigration policies

The town faces fear and anxiety following the second inauguration of President Trump
Lopez said she feels it’s brought neighbors closer
“There really aren’t enough resources in the world to arrest every single person
We have to continue to be able to provide for our families.”
he’s noticed fewer people coming by the coffee shop since the election
Lamas plans to keep talking with people – through their fears
