Jonathan Milan takes a surprise second on uphill finish with Johan Söderqvist third as Almeida misses key move Buitrago left overnight leader João Almeida in the dust after UAE Team Emirates spent most of the day controlling the breakaway and snatched the race leader's jersey from the Portuguese rider I was mainly focused on gaining bonus seconds to take the leader's jersey the win was quite unexpected," Buitrago said "We thought it would be a day for the sprinters like our former teammate Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek) It's incredible—we thought it would be difficult to take back seconds in the GC we took both the stage win and the leader's jersey." Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek) led out for the stage by teammate Jakob Söderqvist finished a distant second place at 12 seconds while the Swede finished third in the uphill dash to the line after turning himself inside out to hold onto the lead group in the final kilometres "It was super tough - we managed it really well," Milan said "I was dropped a few times and the team always brought me back Jakob had really good legs today and had a little gap in the last 500m I was thinking he could [win] because he was feeling better than me Then I saw Buitrago coming from behind super fast I tried to ride my own pace for the 400 metres still to ride to the finish." Buitrago now leads Almeida by eight seconds in the overall classification with teammate Pello Bilbao in third at 29 seconds Four climbs were on tap during the 181-kilometre stage 4 of the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana with riders set to climb the Alto de la Bandereta Alto de Chodos and Alto de Vistabella before the finish in Portell de Morella Five riders dropped out of the race before the stage: Lars Boven (Alpecin-Deceuninck) Iñigo Elosegui (Kern Pharma) and Xabier Isasa and Mikel Bizkarra (Euskaltel-Euskadi) while Uriarte led over the Coll de la Basa and through the sprint in Atzeneta del Maestrat after 75.2km Lidl-Trek and Movistar cooperated to bring the breakaway's lead down to two minutes before the Alto de Chodos He led over the Alto de Chodos to tie for the lead of the mountains classification with Santiago Buitrago (Bahrain Victorious) Agirre was still solo on the Alto de Vistabella where there was a time bonus sprint at the summit However, the action began to pick up in the peloton on the climb, with Lenny Martinez (Bahrain Victorious) and Davide Piganzoli (Polti-Visit Malta) making a move before being quickly reeled in. Pablo Castrillo (Movistar) had better luck and bridged across to Agirre The pair had just under two minutes with 50km to go Castrillo left Agirre behind with 39km to go and buried himself to hold onto the lead He held 30 seconds still with 17km to race as UAE Team Emirates led the chase Castrillo missed a turn and had to bunny-hop a traffic island but still powered on until 9.5km to go when the chasing bunch had him in sight Ineos Grenadiers then set a brisk pace before Movistar's Jefferson Cepeda made a move and managed to open up a strong lead that was still at 15 seconds with 3km to go Jakob Söderqvist (Lidl-Trek) swept past Cepeda with Buitrago on his wheel and then couldn't hold the pace of the Spaniard Results powered by FirstCycling she coordinates coverage for North American events and global news As former elite-level road racer who dabbled in cyclo-cross and track Laura has a passion for all three disciplines When not working she likes to go camping and explore lesser traveled roads UCI governance and performing data analysis More than any other chess event, the FIDE Candidates Tournament, which starts on Friday in Madrid is a winner-takes-all tournament. Finishing first, and only first, means facing World Champion Magnus Carlsen in a match. GM Fabiano Caruana who attended the opening press conference on Wednesday afternoon said he doesn't look at the prize fund and considers anything that isn't first place a disappointment Sitting next to FIDE's managing director and Candidates tournament director Dana Reizniece-Ozola FIDE's chief marketing and communications officer David Llada and the Deputy Minister of Sports for the regional government of Comunidad de Madrid Alberto Tome Gonzalez Caruana was the only chess player at the press conference When the highly experienced chess journalist Leontxo Garcia pointed out that in no other sport would seven of the eight contestants be absent in such a situation Reizniece-Ozola wholeheartedly agreed but also explained that FIDE had preferred to give them some rest It was all the more applaudable that Caruana attended being presented as some sort of local player and his parents have lived in the country for two years it is the country he visited the most outside the U.S. the first time 21 years ago at the World U10 Championship in Oropesa del Mar Although not the oldest (that is GM Teimour Radjabov at 35, nine months older than GM Hikaru Nakamura the most experienced participant in this Candidates He is the only player to have played it three times before Asked to explain to Spanish reporters new to chess what it's like to play a Candidates "I think that the tension of this tournament is only really one upped by the world championship match that was probably the highest tension I've ever felt in my life because it still feels massively important when you're in the midst of it "I think the most important thing to understand is that all the players here they've had one dream which is to become world champion So everyone here is working as hard as possible not just in the last year since they qualified for the tournament Pretty much their entire life has been devoted to chess and to this moment of winning this tournament and qualifying for the match because even after winning this tournament you still have the last and hardest battle "That explains the massive difficulty of this tournament and the tension just comes with that and that's why I think the final games of this tournament is usually where the difference is made where it shows who can handle the stress and tension best because all the players here are quite similar in strength that the most important moments and the way the winner is decided is in the last few games and the last few days of this tournament." Taking into account that basically only first place counts here Chess.com's Mike Klein asked whether that may lead to any changes in the style of play and it's more about the general approach of a long and tough tournament: "The best approach is probably to be patient and not to panic if you don't start winning games right off the bat You don't know when your chance in this tournament will come You can start badly and still have a good chance; you can start well and things fall apart." Reizniece-Ozola pointed out that the tournament's prize fund of 500,000 euros will be distributed in a new way with only three places for the final standings (48,000 euros for first place players will also receive 3,500 euros for every half-point they score Caruana agreed that formats to encourage decisive results can work at other events but that it will have little effect in this particular tournament: "I think many tournaments have adopted systems that encourage more decisive results We've seen the football system adopted in some tournaments We've seen in Norway Chess this armageddon tiebreaker at the end of draws but in this tournament there's only one motivation "I don't actually look at the prize fund in this tournament I didn't know what it was until you mentioned it because anything that isn't first place to me would be considered a disappointment and players will try to fight for more money so a system which encourages more decisive results makes sense." It might be another winner-takes-all event The world champion's remarks about perhaps not defending his title was a big topic at the press conference and Caruana was asked whether it makes a difference to him that second place could potentially be enough for a spot in the match although he usually speaks his mind and speaks honestly he said that he is not certain to play the next world championship match And also maybe it's based on his feelings at the moment there's no way that I would not take up the challenge regardless of who wins the Candidates and qualifies a world championship match is a unique challenge in itself I understand it's a bit different because he's been in that spot more than anyone in modern chess I look at this tournament as still only a first place will qualify [Second place] could be a lucky break for one player It would be highly disappointing for the chess world if Carlsen does not defend his title and Reizniece-Ozola went so far as to say that the world champion would be showing a lack of respect he should not use the argument that the challenger is not strong or interesting enough: "One of the things that chess teaches us is the respect for your opponent I believe that he is the person who has to demonstrate to the world that we always have respect for our opponent If somebody has been going through all the pre-selection stages and has won the qualification rounds then he deserves to play the match against the strongest player in the world One other player was discussed in detail: GM Alireza Firouzja the 18-year-old Iranian-French prodigy who became the youngest player in history to break the 2800-rating barrier he checked out the playing hall (an 80-square-meter area in the beautiful Palacio Santona) with his father Hamidreza who asked a variety of questions about details such as the bathrooms and whether the carpets are thick enough to prevent noise from wood creaking when the players walk The sensitivity to the playing conditions reminds of GM Bobby Fischer was the youngest-ever player to participate in a Candidates tournament—he was 16 years and 29 days at the start of the 1959 edition in Yugoslavia Carlsen broke the record in 2013 by two days while Firouzja is now the third-youngest ever at 18 years He will turn 19 on the day of the second round Looks like @AlirezaFirouzja is checking out the “Naka-view”#FIDECandidates pic.twitter.com/1j3PmPYoZP It is a different event from the ones he's played in But the first time I played the Candidates So I don't think it's impossible for a first-timer to potentially win the tournament I think he's also quite smart in his approach to chess "I think his ascent to the world number-two position was also a little bit of momentum I don't think it fully conveyed his level compared to the other players in the world I don't think that he was at a higher level than other players in the world of the top players I've experienced this myself and I think many players have "We've seen periods when one player has this push and goes to let's say 2820 or 2830 at some point reached this 2820 level and around that same time also players who aren't playing the tournament but [Alexander] Grischuk and [Anish] Giri and Wesley [So] many players had that push to the number-two position to this very high level and then there was some But it shows also that every player in this tournament is capable of playing at that level That's the most important thing: that the player also has this bit of momentum and luck on their side which is necessary to win this tournament." The president of the Castellón Provincial Council, Marta Barrachina, has played a key role in this success, promoting the event's international projection and highlighting its importance as a driver of tourism and sports promotion for the province. Barrachina, who gave the starting signal for the fourth and final stage in Oropesa del Mar, has closely followed the competition, highlighting the "titanic effort" of the cyclists to complete the 35 mi. (56 kilometers) of a technical and demanding course. "Each participant has demonstrated not only their physical endurance but also an unwavering passion for mountain biking, which makes this event a top-level sports spectacle," she emphasized. Thanks to impeccable organization and institutional support led by the Provincial Council, the Mediterranean Epic MTB has attracted elite cyclists and thousands of fans, consolidating Castellón as a privileged destination for outdoor sports. Barrachina has highlighted that "this event is not just a competition but an exceptional platform to showcase to the world the natural wealth of our province, capable of combining sea and mountain in a unique environment." The president has also congratulated the organizing team for "outdoing themselves year after year" and reiterated the Council's commitment to continue supporting this sports event. "The Mediterranean Epic MTB is not only a source of pride for Castellón but an example of how public-private collaboration can generate a positive impact on the local economy and the international projection of our territory," she concluded. Read our Privacy notice North Korea has sent delegates on tour to Benidorm as it plans a Mediterranean-style beach resort on its eastern coast. Twenty officials also visited historic Barcelona, Valencia and Alicante for inspiration. But it was package holiday meccas Benidorm and Oropesa del Mar that impressed them most, as they consider how to turn their port city Wonsan into a tourist destination “aimed at the domestic and international markets”, reported The Telegraph. “We wanted to focus on the beaches because that is what we are interested in,” according to a spokesman for the North Korean embassy in Madrid. Delegates were "amazed by the dimensions" of Benidorm's towers and holiday parks, said the spokesman. The enclosed Marina d’Or tourism complex in Oropesa del Mar particularly took their fancy. For an autocratic state that keeps an iron grip on its citizens, the appeal of a holiday compound is clear. Amusement park Terra Mítica, themed around the ancient civilisations of Egypt, Greece, Rome and Iberia, also sparked their imagination. “They loved the recreation of the various ancient Mediterranean civilisations. It would be very interesting to apply that concept in our theme park, maybe with Asian civilisations,” the embassy said. One of Benidorm’s many campsites received the delegation too, according to a Spanish organiser of the trip. “They asked many detailed questions about the costs of each element in the campsite,” Matías Pérez Such told the online newspaper El Confidencial. “If they want to develop tourism, it’s logical that they start from the bottom up with campsites and not 55-floor hotels. But it’s positive that they want to stop being the most hermetic country in the world,” Mr Pérez Such added. “Tourism breaks down barriers.” Join thought-provoking conversations, follow other Independent readers and see their replies https://www.donegallive.ie/section/1196/advertise-with-us Bringing you live local breaking news, sport, politics, weather & more in Donegal All the latest breaking local news from Donegal Keep up to date with the latest sports news Read the latest crime and court news from Donegal, County Donegal - Donegal Live Donegal Now Donegal Democrat Donegal Post Donegal Peoples Press Finn Valley Inishowen Read all the latest Irish news and updates from around Ireland Find whats happening in and around Donegal Enjoy our award winning photos and picture galleries taken in Donegal Gaeilge Irish Language Erse Gaelic Donegal Live Donegal Now Donegal Democrat Donegal Post Donegal Peoples Press Finn Valley Read about the latest properties available in Donegal Recent death notices and obituaries from Donegal Latest environmental and climate change news in County Donegal Please allow ads as they help fund our trusted local news content.
