Rooted in his experiences as a diver and underwater videographer, Tropical Brainstorm captured the tension between natural ecosystems and human debris. Oviedo drew from biomorphic forms and marine life observed during deep-sea expeditions, using recurring visual motifs, what he called “form families,” to mirror nature’s organized chaos.
they finally got some: Jared Jones is throwing a baseball again
After a disappointing April that left Pittsburgh Pirates fans desperate for some good news
The right-handed starting pitcher, who has been sidelined for the past six weeks with a UCL sprain in his throwing elbow, was cleared for throwing activity and has already played catch at 45 feet twice, per Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
It will likely be three to four weeks before Jones begins throwing off a mound
but the fact that he is throwing at all marks a significant step in his recovery
His estimated timeline to return to the Majors is 12 weeks
which likely means he won't slot back into the Pirates' starting rotation until after the All-Star break
Pirates second baseman Nick Gonzales
who has been sidelined since Opening Day with a left ankle fracture
has graduated from a walking boot to an ankle brace
and he will likely begin jogging by the end of the week
Right-hander Johan Oviedo is continuing his rehab from a right lat strain at the Pirates' facility in Bradenton
He is throwing from distances up to 90 feet without issue
now 13 months removed from Tommy John surgery
began a rehab assignment with Single-A Bradenton this week and has pitched in two games without issue
Speaking of rehab assignments, first baseman Spencer Horwitz – who underwent offseason wrist surgery – began his this week with Double-A Altoona
and he will likely play in a few more games before transitioning to Triple-A Indianapolis for the remainder of his assignment
Finally, catcher Endy Rodriguez is continuing to recover from a right index finger laceration just above his knuckle and will need to immobilize his finger for another week to give the skin time to heal before he can resume baseball activity

OVIEDO
you’ve probably noticed the city is changing—quickly
Oviedo doesn’t just wake up one day and decide to add thousands of new homes
The city follows state guidelines based on population projections from the Bureau of Economic and Business Research (BEBR) at the University of Florida
News 6 asked Oviedo Mayor Megan Sladek whether it’s possible to stop the growth
BEBR estimates Oviedo will gain 16,000 new residents over the next 20 years
That means at least 6,000 new housing units — whether residents like it or not

said the high-density housing growth will take place in four key areas: New Downtown
and the big patch of farmland on west Mitchell Hammock
Longtime residents say they miss the quiet
“I think a lot of people just see their small town changing
and they don’t like it,” said Melissa Washburn
“They don’t like all the traffic and all that.”
But many neighbors said the growth is inevitable
I’m excited about the opportunities,” said Kristin Moore
I think we can pause here and contain it a little bit.”
And while some residents may wish they could wave a magic wand and freeze Oviedo in time
“I don’t think we should stop growth,” said Washburn
They need to make sure the infrastructure can handle it.”

Three buses belonging to O2B Kids at the mall were broken into last week
Police said one bus was broken into and vandalized sometime on the night of April 13 or early morning of April 14
The department said items were found in the bus that may be related to or belong to the two individuals pictured above
The photos show a young man and woman or teens standing by doors inside the mall
two more buses were broken into and vandalized
This comes days after the mall posted on Facebook about the break-ins
saying it was considering a chaperone policy because of the incidents
“What was once a ‘maybe’ around implementing a chaperone policy for those under 18 has quickly become a ‘we have to.’” the post stated
I’m making one final appeal to our community — especially to parents and the younger generation."
The mall did not say how a chaperone policy would deter vehicle break-ins outside the mall

OVIEDO, Fla. – The Oviedo Mall on Wednesday said it is considering a chaperone policy for those under the age of 18 because a tenant faces tens of thousands of dollars in losses after two vehicle break-ins this week
In a Facebook post, the Oviedo Mall said the break-ins happened Sunday and Tuesday nights
The mall says the tenant face $30,000 in losses after Tuesday’s night’s damage
A police investigation into the break-ins is underway
“We are currently working with the Oviedo Police Department to bring those responsible to justice,” the post stated
The Oviedo Mall said management is considering making a policy change because of the break-ins

The lengthy Facebook post included a personal message:
I want that experience to be available to today’s teens
I’m on the other side—the one who sees the aftermath of the choices made here
I’m responsible for protecting this place—not just the building
and community members who pour everything into what they do
“I also know Oviedo Mall hasn’t always had the best reputation
and they help shape how this space is treated
If we talk about it like it doesn’t matter
Remind them to treat every space and every person they encounter with respect
Remind them that being part of a community means caring for the places we all share
the next message I post will be the one no one wants to read: that no one under 18 will be allowed in the mall without an adult chaperone
“We all want Oviedo Mall to be a place where memories are made—not where freedoms are lost
It’s not known who wrote the post or what position they hold within the mall

WATCH: Bev speaks to Neil Oliver about her covid stance backlash
A group of children has been rescued after their parents forced them to endure a four year long covid lockdown in a "horror house."
The youngsters were discovered at the property in the northern Spanish town of Oviedo
where a couple are said to have held their children captive for more than three years
the family was reported to have been living under lockdown conditions since 2021
despite Covid restrictions being lifted in Spain in March 2022
investigators were horrified to discover piles of rubbish and used face masks

a parish of the northern Spanish town of Oviedo
The couple who had their three children locked up in their house since 2021
the children appeared to be amazed that they were finally allowed outdoors
detectives suggested the parents suffered from "Covid syndrome" and had continued to live in fear of the virus for several years
A spokesman for the local force said: "As soon as we got them out
all three children began to breathe deeply
"We have all been affected by Covid syndrome and the consequences of the pandemic
We can reflect on what led a family to live in confinement for so long."
This picture shows the house where a couple held their children captive
Detectives found a seriously ill cat within the property
which had appeared to have not been taken to the vet as the parents feared they would catch coronavirus
There was also a large supply of face masks and medicine along with huge amounts of rubbish
Neighbours said the family were extremely reclusive and never left the house
with food being delivered to the door as if the pandemic was still ongoing
Local media referred to the villa as a "horror house" adding the family’s mother had both German and US citizenship
but police had few other details about where exactly they came from
the children had been forced by their parents to wear three face masks on top of each other before officers searched the property
Detectives were forced to speak to the children
two eight-year-old twins and a 10-year-old
in English as they had not been attending school so did not know how to speak Spanish

— Seminole County commissioners cleared the way for a museum at the former Gabriela Colored School in Jamestown this month when they voted unanimously to approve rezoning the property
Construction is set to start this summer on the Historic Oviedo Colored Schools Museum
which will chronicle the history of six schools in the Oviedo area from 1913 to 1967
Organizers say the goal is to open the museum to the public in summer 2026
The original property was built during the racially segregated days of the Jim Crow era at the intersection of West State Road 426 and James Road in Oviedo
and is the last of the county's historic colored schools
Judith Dolores Smith says her mission to open the museum started when she was driving by the property — which is located at 2170 James Drive in Oviedo — and noticed a hole in the roof
but what they accomplished was extraordinary,” she said
What took place inside the walls of the old wooden building is something Smith loves to share
She even authored a book about the schools
she was one of the first teachers at the Oviedo Colored School,” Smith said
pointing to a photo of her mother in the book
“Can you imagine with just a one-room school — and the people that came out of here what they did
“They held classes in this particular school until 1950
when all of the schools were incorporated into the Oviedo schools
and then there was just one colored school for the area.”
All that history could have been forgotten forever when a gaping hole was left in the building's tin roof after a storm
“That hole was there for six months or more,” Smith said
She said something in her spirit spoke to her
‘Why don’t you fix it?’ And that began the journey,” Smith said
She says it was a journey powered by faith
“This is the only area where the school was held inside of the church," Smith said of the historic colred schools
"The rest of the schools were held alongside of churches.”
Certified Best Roofing donated a new roof, and five of the schools' former students stepped up to form a board of directors for a nonprofit dedicated to saving the space
Smith is now the president of Historic Oviedo Colored Schools Museum
‘Let’s make it a museum’," she said.
A grant from the state of Florida will help pay for renovations
With so much history within the four walls
Smith said the community was happy to share their memories with her
She said she got pictures from individuals and “just from any and everybody.”
sitting on one of the 13 original church pews that remain in the building
said she wants to make sure the history of the area's colored schools is preserved
“Our faith was there when nobody else’s was,” Smith said
“Our faith was there when there were laws on the books that kept us from being our best selves.”
She said faith and education were a powerful combination that led to brighter futures for so many
“Especially with God — Anything is possible,” Smith said
OVIEDO, Fla. — Oviedo Mall officials say they have seen around $100,000 in damage over the past few years stemming from teens breaking in and vandalizing property
One of the most recent incidents involved damage to one of the school buses used by a mall tenant
However, officials are reinstating the Mall Rat program to help prevent future issues
shared that the damages were estimated at around $30,000
causing mall officials to question whether or not they should implement an age restriction policy
discharged fire extinguishers and with those chemicals
the cleanup on that alone is expensive,” said Gunderson
It happened a week ago. Mall officials posted on Facebook about the damage to the buses and shared their concerns about the recurring issues they’ve seen when it comes to teens not respecting the property
The post went on to say that officials were considering a policy that would require teens to have a chaperone at the mall; something they’ve considered before
kids can’t be in the mall without a parental guardian,” is what Gunderson said they were considering
While he shared that many people seem to have written the mall off
Gunderson said it’s constantly evolving and that officials are doing their best to turn the 27-year-old mall into more of a community hub
“You’ve got places where you can come have your doctor’s appointment
grab a bite to eat and then from there you can catch a movie
You name it you can probably do it here,” Gunderson said
Gunderson said it has lost major department stores like Sears and Dillards but instead shifted to housing more locally owned businesses and activity-based storefronts
He shared that many people have labeled the mall as dead
and he believes that might be a factor for how teens have been treating it
“There’s a trend of jumping up and slapping an exit sign
which we’ve had to replace that same exit sign four or five times and unfortunately that does get a little costly
breaking windows and things like that,” he said
Social media fads and other TikTok posts is where Gunderson says he believes most of the challenges to destroy mall property have come from
Though he’s only been with the mall for four years
he said it’s his livelihood and he cares deeply about the building and the success of it
While Gunderson added that he understands kids are kids and want to have fun
he said that fun shouldn’t come at the cost of damaging mall property
but we want to create an environment of respect
We want you to have a safe place to go but we need you to come in and take care of this place,” said Gunderson
After feedback from the community about the chaperone policy
officials at the mall decided to try an alternative that they’re hoping with get teens more involved and excited about coming to the mall and curb the destruction
A club member program from teens 13 to 17 years old that will have access to exclusive discounts and classes
“We do not want to enact a chaperone policy
it’s the last thing we want; to say that you can’t come to this space,” said Gunderson
this is our way of kind of embracing the madness a little bit and giving them a reason to care about this space.”
Registration for the program is already open
and officials say as long as teens are utilizing the club membership program they’ll keep the opportunities open and available
– After pushback over the removal of political signs at early voting locations
the city of Oviedo is considering allowing them
Oviedo City Code currently states that political signs can only be placed outside the polls on “voting day,” which is defined as Election Day
there was no early voting; there was only one day to vote
it makes sense to have written it as it was,” Mayor Megan Sladek said
maybe we should have all days that the poll is open count as a day that you can vote.”
The city began examining its rules on political signs after it removed dozens of them last fall
“Candidates line up their signs in front of the polls
our policy is if somebody reports to code enforcement
then we look at the law on the books and we apply it,” Sladek explained
the city directed staff to recommend amendments for campaign signs on city-owned property
But I do think that it lends itself to the energy of the opportunity to vote and helps people know
This proposed change would not alter the distance signs must be from the polling place
allow them to be placed in the right-of-way as long as they do not interfere with traffic
“The First Amendment protects our right to political speech
and we want to make sure that there is a space for that,” Sladek added
There would be some restrictions: signs could only be 6 square feet
the city reserves the right to designate any of its property serving as a polling place as off-limits and signs can only be on city-owned property that is being used as a polling place

Oviedo's setback deals blow to Bucs' rotation pictureHorwitz
Stratton making progress in returns from injuriesMarch 5th
BRADENTON, Fla. -- Johan Oviedo suffered a setback after his last live batting practice
resulting in him being placed on the 60-day injured list on Monday with an injury to the right lat muscle
the surgeon who performed his Tommy John surgery
Oviedo's return to the mound is going to be delayed
and he will be in a holding pattern for almost a month
Oviedo is not throwing and will get new imaging done on his right lat and arm in four weeks
When that is done in late March or early April
the team will reconvene with Meister to map out his return to throwing
the goal is to aim for Oviedo to start using plyo balls in about six weeks
which is the early phases of a throwing program
“Very unfortunate for Johan,” senior director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk said at LECOM Park on Wednesday
'cause he's worked his tail off with the elbow rehab
This is just an unfortunate setback in his return from that surgery with this most recent right lat injury."
Oviedo is working back from a Tommy John procedure on his right elbow in December 2023
They also have experimented with the idea of stretching out relievers Caleb Ferguson and Carmen Mlodzinski this spring
giving them more options for either a starter
a long reliever or a swingman who could do both
plus the addition of veteran starter Andrew Heaney last month
the Pirates still have a solid starting five
But losing Oviedo for a longer period of time than originally hoped for is a blow for this rotation
He established himself as a quality big league starter in 2023 and had been making great strides to return in early 2025
That return is going to have to be delayed
• First baseman Spencer Horwitz is continuing to progress back from his right wrist surgery
fielding ground balls and starting dry swings
He should start throwing next week and should start hitting off a tee either this weekend or early next week
but it still looks doubtful that Horwitz will be ready for Opening Day
I think that's not a specific goal we're aiming and pushing him for
it shouldn't be too much longer."
• Hunter Stratton is slated to throw a simulated game at Pirate City on Wednesday, another milestone as he continues to work back from his surgery to repair the ruptured patella tendon in his left knee
He threw his first live batting practice last week
and while he’s still yet to do throwing or fielding drills
"He's still building back up the conditioning explosiveness
but he continues to meet all the demands of the rehab,” Tomczyk said
And that specifically measures the balance between hamstring and quadricep strength
really happy to just see him back out there and compete."

MLB Trade Rumors
By Darragh McDonald | March 5
March 5: Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk provided an update on Oviedo to the team’s beat this morning (link via Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)
The right-hander is currently shut down from throwing
and it seems he won’t pick up a ball anytime soon
Keith Meister (who performed Oviedo’s Tommy John surgery) will reconvene for a fresh round of imaging on Oviedo’s lat and elbow in one month
they’ll establish a timetable for him to resume throwing
That strongly implies that Oviedo will be shut down from throwing for a good bit more than a month
shedding further light on the team’s decision to place him on the 60-day IL
The news comes as something of a surprise. Oviedo had undergone Tommy John surgery in November of 2023. He missed the entire 2024 season but it seemed fair to expect him to be healthy coming into 2025 and there hadn’t been any reporting to suggest otherwise. Manager Derek Shelton tells Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that a “lat issue” has surfaced during a recent bullpen session
This move now means Oviedo will be on the injured list for at least the first two months of the season
IL placements can be backdated to three days before Opening Day but the 60-day count doesn’t start until then
meaning Oviedo can’t be reinstated until late May at the earliest
Pittsburgh Pirates Transactions Johan Oviedo
All the more reason to NOT have given away Ortiz for a broken down 1st baseman who can only hit righties to begin with
Why not trade a Ortiz when you can just sign a Heaney Quintana for 5m
Actually better giving the young staff a veteran and more importantly being left handed
Maybe Horowitz comes back better than ever
Playing half games in PNC could make him even better
What’s so good about his down the stretch
Ortiz had a 4.57 FIP as a starter last season
“Down the stretch” ,”in August,
“Mr Muy Bueno” would be calling him a bum
The “eye test” advocates will tell you that Spencer Horwitz can’t hit without ever having seen him take a swing
Apparently he did something that stats don’t show and only Bueno could see
Those are back end starter stats and nothing analytical about them
He could be better in Cleveland than in Pittsburgh
It will come down to if he strikes out more people
Will require another pitch or throwing harder or something that Pittsburgh could never accomplish
If they could they wouldn’t have traded him
Sure we have seen good stretches down the stretch
But I really don’t know the numbers but I felt he just looked better out of the pen
He has better stats as starter in most areas
You probably just remember him down the stretch where he wasn’t as good except only to Bueno
If anything his down the stretch makes you want to move him to pen or trade him to Cleveland
Every General Manager in the major leagues makes extensive use of statistical analyses
They have entire departments devoted to analytics
and Home Runs are all as basic as it gets and are the statistics that are most focused on a players individual performance
They are not at all affected by fielding and are the stats that are least affected by luck
let’s compare Luis Ortiz (as a starter) to the league average for starters in each of those categories
I watched him “down the stretch” have a lower K rate than the MLB average
and allow far more HR than the MLB average.
and Horowitz shouldn’t be seen as the solution to the lineups issues
but he looked like a promising if unproven piece
It’s unfair to say he’s broken down when he’s still young and has hit in the majors
If it’s another Hayes type that saps his hitting
I would try to trade for Torkelson or Andrew Vaughn asap
They are questionable but could start at first and figure out the rest later
Should have never put themselves in this situation in the first place
Should have just got Canha for completely free like Milwaukee did
He looked like he was gonna have 3rd man stuff
They preferred Quintana but he wasn’t that interested
The Bucs offered more to Quintana before signng Heaney but Quintana turned them down
Must have thought he could have gotten either more for the year or a 2 year year deal and did not get it
I believe it was planned for Oviedo to go on the 60 ev4ntuslly anyway to work him back slowly from TJ just like all teams do
There’s a reason why Quintana hasn’t signed
I’d imagine he’s asking for a lot of money
I assume he would have just went right back to the Mets
Mets are so over the tax 5m becomes 10m to them
Not sure if Cohen can still write off most of that still or not
But if it hasn’t ran out ye it’s coming soon
unless one is our top prospect pitchers makes the opening day roster
looks like more bullpen games for the season
it would have been an awful season just with the likes of signing Pham
Frazier and trading for an injured first baseman who can’t hit lefties
Soencer Horwitz had a higher OPS last season than all but four MLB first baseman who had at least 300 plate appearances
His injury arose after the Pirates traded for him and he’s only out for 6 to 8 weeks
He’ll be starting for the Pirates before the end of April.
Someone gets hurt soon they simply sign Gibson Lynn or someone
Someone gets hurt in April Ferguson Majinski
May June Burrows Ashcraft Harrington Bubba
But with Skenes Keller Heaney you could do bullpen games
It’s a good starting rotation that will get even better when Chandler and Harrington arrive
Keller is a league average starter (meaning a #3) with a FIP- around the league average of 100
He has struggled in the second half of the last two seasons
with his groundball percentage dropping and his HR rate greatly increasing
He might benefit from stricter innings and pitch limits in the first half
and Home Runs are the best statistics for evaluating a pitcher’s performance because they focus entirely on his individual performance
but I hope this opens the door for Bubba Chandler
Or at least Braxton Ashcraft or Mike Burrows
and Burrows even made his MLB debut last year
They already lost a year of Skenes and a year of Jones
Eliminate a year of contention and start next rebuild a year sooner
They don’t need to pitch 5 6 innings in minors to begin with
Keep innings down in April so you can have some in August September if needed
I think Ashcraft has a pretty safe floor as a good reliever even setup closer sure
Let him start though until he proves he can’t
Can always move him to the pen for wait for it… Playoffs!!!!
You could have just signed Perez Heaney Quintana for 5m
Or traded a platoon 1b with a trashed wrist for Ortiz
Why are so called Pirate fans wanting to throw away a year of Bubba
If you wait until mid April you get the extra year unless he wins ROY
Wait until June and he won’t be able to win ROY and no super two
Bubba missing 2 to 10 starts and you get an entire additional year as him as a Pirate
You are worried about only 2025 when 2030 31 32 are just as important
Skenes Jones Keller will be long gone likely
KG can’t do it all alone so gotta give him so pitching
Losing Oviedo for 60 days is not the crisis that the Nutting-haters want to make it out to be
and Falter is a pretty good starting rotation
Only 1 or 2 percent of population are capable of critical thinking anyways
Even if healthy he was starting in minors to rehab or bullpen
They likely will trade him if he is ever healthy and good
Bednar Santana should be traded this July or in the off season
I will celebrate it because they have to be traded
There’s no choice unless you want to extend them and it’s a option if they are cheap enough
Reynolds Keller may need to be traded as well
If you bring Cutch back for 5m payroll next year will be the same as it is now without signing a single free agent
And that’s with Bednar Santana being traded
They could keep them because they won’t need to sign any significant free agents
But if they want to extend a Skenes Cruz one of those will likely need to go unless the new hitting coach is a guru and Pirates win and attendance takes a big jump
Other wise another losing season and new gm will make fans think rebuild well that’s not good for season ticket sales and negotiating new tv deal
If you traded Reynolds for nothing but prospects and took the $ you were paying Reynolds and signed Santander Profar etc you wouldn’t be a significantly worse mlb team
Be pretty much the same and you would have prospects
You already ruined the FOB&D blog with your boring stats
attacks on anyone who posts a negative comment about the Pirates and self self righteousness
Looks like another 76 win team but just need a few surprises
If Davis reaches realistic potential you make run at division
Likely not happening but at least give it a month
What won’t make a difference is 2 or 3 more starts of Bubba
He isn’t throwing 200 innings so any starts he gets in April will be starts he won’t get in August September and get ready to lol Buctober!!!!
There are Pirate “fans” who HOPE the team will lose because they want to keep moaning and whining.
Proving once again how out of touch you really are
in the Name of Christ Jesus and according to the Word of God
“There women exchanged natural intercourse for unnatural
were consumed with passion for one another
Men committed shameless acts with men and received in their persons the due penalty for their error.” (Romans 1: 26b-27; The Word of God)
Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities
indulged in sexual immorality and unnatural lust
serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.” (Jude 1:7; The Word of God)
Their “Pride” is in their Shame
By the time Oviedo is ready it’ll be about the time the Pirates trade Heaney to the Padres…

OVIEDO, Fla. – For more than 40 years, the streets of downtown Oviedo were known not just for their small-town charm, but also for an unexpected local celebrity — wild chickens.
What followed was a tale of free-roaming poultry that became a beloved part of Oviedo’s identity
But recently, Oviedo residents have been asking: What happened to the chickens?
taking over the streets and even finding homes in local businesses
Tourists and residents alike would spot them pecking around downtown
Some locals affectionately referred to them as Oviedo’s unofficial mascot
residents have noticed the once-plentiful flock has thinned
became more of a nuisance to some businesses due to the mess they left behind
noting that the chickens were considered a “nuisance” by certain business owners because of the “chicken poop problem.”
the chickens were “humanely removed” from the properties where they were most abundant
While some might have hoped for a more peaceful solution
the mayor clarified that it was a property owner’s right to manage their land and that the chickens were ultimately considered livestock
“The chickens just disappeared one night,” said Sladek
“It was a decision made by private landowners
The disappearance of the chickens is just one of many changes to the town of Oviedo in recent years
some long-time residents feel the town is losing its rural charm
“The chickens were part of what made Oviedo special,” said one local
Local businesses still carry chicken-themed products
and tourists continue to search for stories about the infamous flock
but their legacy lives on in the town’s history
the Oviedo Mall announced this week that it is bringing back the “Mall Rat Club.”
The initiative is aimed at teens aged 13-17 and works to offer them a safe and fun way to hang out at the mall while bringing together members of the Oviedo community.
It has been reintroduced as an alternative attempt to combat the recent issues instead of a chaperone policy
The teen program will officially start on May 1
It was originally introduced in 2023 but was placed on a pause due to management changes
director of marketing and events for the mal
hopes it will bring a new light to the community
“The last thing we want to do is implement a curfew or chaperone policy
We’ve tried to be very clear about how hard we’re working to avoid that
which is why we have made such heartfelt appeals to our community,” Gunderson said
The Mall Rat Club gives teens access to exclusive discounts
events and experiences throughout the mall
Enrollment requires a parent or guardian to be present for membership card pickup
during which both the teen and parent sign Oviedo Mall’s Code of Conduct
which reinforces mutual respect and accountability
The mall’s newly renovated movie theater suffered damage linked to a viral TikTok challenge
Parents can visit the mall’s website to learn more about the program
Membership cards will be available for pick up in the mall management office beginning Thursday May 1 and cards can be picked up Monday-Friday from 9 a.m
the Oviedo Mall also offers the Kid Crew Program
character appearances and family-friendly events year-round
Both the Teen Club and our Kid Crew program are completely free to join
Most of the events and activities we offer will also be free
How do you plan to appeal to the teens who are focused on social media
“Oviedo Mall offers so many unique spaces and activities that naturally lend themselves to content creation—whether it’s a dance workshop
creating experiences teens will want to share with their audience while discovering new passions and having fun."
What about teens who think that teen clubs could be considered “lame or boring?”
“We know not every teen is going to love every activity
which is why we’re offering a wide variety of experiences—from photography and yoga to book clubs and gaming nights
but we think they’ll be missing out on a pretty great time."
How long do you plan to keep the program around for
“As long as teens are still interested and engaged
we hope it becomes a lasting part of what makes Oviedo Mall a community hub.”
Have you seen the teen program work before
When we launched the Mall Rat Club in 2023
Many of those original members still visit the mall regularly and continue to take advantage of their discounts
We’re excited to build on that success and keep growing.”

– Oviedo leaders and residents are weighing in on a bill that would allow for open containers within a new arts and entertainment district
House Bill 4031 would allow for Oviedo on the Park to issue specialty permits to businesses so that people can purchase alcoholic drinks and walk around with them
It would also create a special zone within the city called the “Oviedo Arts and Entertainment District.”
Oviedo Assistant City Manager Patrick Kelly said Oviedo on the Park has become an attraction for the area
with festivals that bring in thousands every year
“What it does is it allows the businesses around the park to take place in some of that economic benefit of those people coming in by allowing them to sell alcoholic beverages
and then for people to leave their establishments and then go out and enjoy the park and the festival to take place there,” Kelly said
Tommy Burton said he visits Oviedo on the Park three to four days a week and is in favor of the bill
“I don’t really see a problem with it because a lot of times it’s not as large as you would like it to be,” Burton said
it’s sometimes it’s overcrowded when you’re sitting there
but if you could grab it and then come sit by the lake
only because this is a kid-friendly atmosphere and I kind of like to keep it that way and I just don’t want alcohol mixed with that,” said Denise Pulido
Kelly said the next steps would be to come up with some specifications on how the drinks are consumed in public
it would be a cup that would have a particular color and branding so that it’s easily identifiable that people are walking with an alcoholic beverage,” Kelly said
“That would hopefully give the distinction of
that folks are walking out in the public with that beverage and so that would allow them to be able to police the area and keep them within the specified area.”
Should the bill make it through the legislature and get the final stamp of approval from Gov
it will go into effect the day it becomes law
the city of Oviedo would still need to draft an ordinance to get the city council’s input and guidance on the cups
it would go through the public hearing process and adoption process
Kelly said he hopes all of that will happen within a couple months of the bill becoming law
OVIEDO, Fla. – After five years, the owners of the Oviedo Brewing Company announced that they would be closing at the end of February
The announcement was shared with the public on Facebook this week
and lasting impacts of the pandemic” as the reason for the closure
It’s another loss at a mall that has been trying to reinvent itself
and with so many similar stories happening across Central Florida it begs the question
what does the future of the Oviedo Mall actually look like
The mall close to State Road 417 and Red Bug Road first opened in 1998
said its location never had enough density in this market to drive traffic into a million-square-foot regional mall
“This mall is in a beautiful area,” said Hipes
Hipes met the News 6 team on the property Thursday to show the progress that has been made in recent years and his vision for the mall’s future
Buckets filled with water used to be a common sight for shoppers because of a leaking roof
Hipes says they’ve been working on fixing the aging infrastructure and have invested millions of dollars into a list of maintenance projects
“We’ve spent significant dollars on the roof
We’re almost done with everything,” said Hipes
“About two and half years ago we put in all new air conditioning
they’re working on the upkeep and continue to check off projects on the list like landscaping
it’s just that it doesn’t happen overnight,” said Hipes
“Turning around old malls is not easy to do.”
Our News 6 team spoke to shoppers Thursday who admitted they don’t see much foot traffic most days compared to other retail locations in the Orlando area
“I come here five times a week,” said Courtney Brooks
Another man who was visiting from DeLand said
“It seems like every time we come there’s something new or something old has closed
Hipes said he is working to develop the property into a place where people can “eat
and play.” He showed off the Orlando Orthopedic Center that opened in 2023
He calls the side of the mall by the old Macy’s property “medical main street.” The actual Macy’s location is currently closed with a sign that reads “future development.”
While progress is being made to make the mall a true mixed-use development
Hipes is still waiting on construction to begin on a housing project at the former Macy’s property
the apartments have been in the works for years
and I don’t talk about it too much because it’s a very complicated transaction,” said Hipes
Hipes said there are multiple approvals and property owners involved
They’ve already been through the city,” said Hipes
“We’ve just got to figure out and finish the paperwork and when you’ve got lawyers involved and a lot of paperwork it takes time.”
Hipes acknowledged progress doesn’t happen overnight
so it’s important to me to make sure this place turns around and becomes the home run it should be,” said Hipes

OVIEDO, Fla. – A water main in Oviedo was struck Wednesday, leading to a water outage and boil water notice issued for some residents, county officials said on social media
The water connection has since been restored
but a precautionary boil-water notice was issued that afternoon for those in the Isles of Oviedo and Oviedo Mall
[EXCLUSIVE: Become a News 6 Insider (it’s FREE) | PINIT! Share your photos]
The county advises those living along Red Bug Road, Slavia Road and Aloma Avenue to follow the notice. The full list of addresses is on the county’s website here
or washing dishes should be boiled for at least a minute
Water supply for the Isles of Oviedo and Oviedo Mall were temporarily changed from Seminole County to the West Mitchell Hammock Water Treatment Plant because of the outage
smell and discoloration in the water due to the change in water treatment and change in direction of water flow in the distribution system
City officials also advised taking these precautions:
Residents should continue boiling their water until the city analyzes and clears all water samples
If the water doesn’t clear after running a cold and a hot water tap for 15 to 20 minutes
The city also says any questions can be directed toward its Utilities Department at 407-971-5657

'Money!' Oviedo takes first step in return to moundFebruary 13th
BRADENTON, Fla. -- Endy Rodríguez set his target low, challenging Johan Oviedo after the right-hander had been less than perfect in his previous delivery
That’s what these backfield sessions on the mounds of Pirate City are for
It’s been a while since Oviedo was on a mound surrounded by teammates
He threw a couple of live batting practices this offseason
but Thursday was the first time he’s been on these backfields for a Spring Training since he underwent Tommy John surgery in December 2023
teammates and front office eyes were all watching
“There were a lot of people around,” Oviedo said
I don’t do well when I don’t have pressure on me
knowing we have to help each other but also compete is a big factor to bring the best out of myself.”
Rodríguez didn’t need to move the glove and shouted out his approval to his pitcher: “Money!”
“He was trying to hit a spot and it was a really good one,” Rodríguez said afterward

That’s the Oviedo the Pirates sorely missed in 2024
when he recorded a 4.31 ERA over 32 starts and 177 2/3 innings and got better results as the season progressed
Oviedo looked to be part of the team’s rotation plans for years to come
but that elbow surgery left the Pirates without their 2023 No
Oviedo's bullpen session Thursday was a first step back toward him competing for a spot in a new-look Pirates rotation
one that is far deeper than what he left in 2023
as is Bailey Falter -- now a full-fledged starter
But the youth movement has hit the Pirates rotation
Derek Shelton wants to see Oviedo check boxes in Spring Training before saying for certain whether Oviedo is in the rotation or is in competition for a spot
but Ovideo needs to do live batting practices in camp
pitch in Grapefruit League games and cross the bridges every rehabbing player crosses
There is certainly opportunity after the Pirates traded Luis Ortiz for Spencer Horwitz this offseason
“We know this is a really big body and a guy that has an ability to log innings
we're gonna have to be thoughtful with what those innings are and how they are.”

This isn’t exactly the same Oviedo that we saw in 2023 either
He’s spent more time in the gym than he ever has before
The lower half of his body was always ahead of his upper body in the past
Now he’s trying to be more patient and make sure his upper and lower half mechanics line up
“I definitely got the feel for the baseball,” Oviedo said
the more I pitch the better feel I’ll have
being consistent with my release point and try not to be so quick to the plate and more efficient with my mechanics
So I was glad all the work we put in in the offseason showed off today.”
and it's something Oviedo has had to learn these past 14 months while building back to this opportunity
He could be one of the best pitchers on a very talented staff this year
but he’s got to first show that he is fully healthy and can stay that way
“It’s hard to hold myself down and prevent [myself] from going 100%
but it’s something I learned,” Oviedo said
I work a lot on my mental part of the game
I learned how to control the feelings… how to be calm and be patient with everything
I try to follow all the steps they put into it and trust in what we do
So I’m really looking forward to the results.”

— After almost two decades of discussions
Oviedo commissioners moved forward with an upgrade to the city’s public safety building
City commissioners voted Monday to approve adding an annex to the current building
The first was to renovate the almost 35-year-old building
and the second was to add a 10,000-square-foot annex to it
It’s a decision with which Oviedo Police Chief Dale Coleman is happy
“I’m very excited that we’re finally getting progress
and I think the addition of the annex will be a tremendous asset to the men and women of the Oviedo Police Department and the citizens of Oviedo,” Coleman said
The original plan was to build a brand new public safety building
residents approved an $11.5 million budget
but after several discussions and cost conflicts
the commissioners tabled the plans and returned to the drawing board
Renovating the current building would have cost about $12.9 million
The annex will cost the city about $9.6 million and fall within the budget
“We get more bang for the buck,” Coleman said
I’m just looking for the best bang for the buck for everybody.”
Coleman said he is just happy to see progress is being made to the outdated building
and it was the public safety building for the police and fire,” he said
but it has not met the needs of men and women we have
as far as training and as far as space for our storage
technology and things of that nature.”
With $2 million now available in the budget
Coleman said he wants to add even more square footage to the annex
Oviedo city leaders said the next step of action is to look at bonds for the project
The city attorneys said they will look at some options and come back to the commission next month
— Oviedo officials are looking to allow something other cities tend to crack down on
City leaders have been working with state legislators to get a special zone created for Oviedo on the Park to allow patrons to carry open containers for alcoholic drinks
you can find businesses like Legacy Liquors
It's a place that prides itself on its great selection
“I love bringing quality to the neighborhood and to the community," Legacy Liquors owner Rick Rattan says
The family-owned business has stores all over Orange and Seminole counties and has been in Oviedo for almost three years
Rattan says the diversity and variety of businesses make this area unique
people often feel the need to leave the area to have fun
“Most of the residents here have to leave to go to downtown Orlando or different cities to enjoy themselves and then they have to drive back," Rattan says
the majority of it is a five-minute drive or a walk
And with Uber and all of that in access right now
it’s so easy to just stay in Oviedo and have a great time in Oviedo.”
That’s why city leaders are hoping legislators consider House Bill 4031 to approve a special zone surrounding Oviedo on the Park to allow people to carry open containers
“It will allow people to utilize a special cup
to carry alcoholic beverages in between businesses and especially in our district
into homes as well," Oviedo City Manager Bryan Cobb says
While some believe allowing patrons to enter businesses with open containers from other establishments is bad for business
Ratton says he feels the community will support all businesses here
“They don’t really hand pick a certain place to say
They have the best slushie so I’m not drinking at any other store any more,' right?" Rattan says
"You will find them at different locations trying out different things.”
Marlow's Tavern's Corporate Office and VP of Marketing & Administrating Officer Kaffee Hopkins sent Spectrum News 13 a statement
"Marlow’s Tavern supports an open container law in Oviedo
It allows us to offer a more enjoyable and flexible experience for our guests
By permitting alcohol consumption in designated public spaces
we can enhance the dining experience and attract more guests
It will make an already great community even better."
Rattan says the change would give businesses like his a chance to showcase their specialty drinks and bring more customers to the area
“There’s so many events that the city provides down by the amphitheater and the lake that it just makes sense," Rattan says
this is Florida and you get a cold beverage and you’re good to go.”
the next step would be for the city to create an ordinance to make the open container zone law in Oviedo
It's something they hope to make happen when this year’s legislative session wraps up on May 2

with city officials confirming that work remains on schedule
aims to repair damage caused by previous hurricanes
both residents and commuters will be affected
pedestrians and drivers will need to take detours around McKinnon Avenue
The project consists of three key components:
Oviedo assistant city engineer Paul Yeargain, said that the damage stems largely from Hurricane Ian
which brought record-breaking rainfall to the area
“Hurricane Ian was a pretty substantial storm," he said
"It’s probably the largest rainfall event we’ve had to move through in quite some time

“You see how low the ground goes from there
There’s a storm pipe that went through here,” Ramos said
One of the biggest concerns is backyard flooding caused by a hill that connects homes in the neighborhood
Heavy rain makes it even harder for water to drain properly
the most important thing is to control erosion," Ramos said
I just got done fixing their pavers because the water keeps pushing the dirt and pushing the dirt.”

Here’s when Craft brewery closing at Oviedo Mall on Feb
The brewing company posted that it will be closing on Feb
28 after five years of serving the Oviedo community
Located at the Oviedo Mall, the Oviedo Brewing Company is the only craft brewery in Oviedo and hosts an 8,000-square-foot space, including a tap room, brewhouse and full kitchen, as stated on the company’s website
and the lasting impacts of the pandemic have made it increasingly difficult for us to continue
We have fought tirelessly to keep our doors open
but the financial and emotional toll has been overwhelming
The effort to push forward has mentally drained us
we have reached the difficult decision to close,” the post stated
The brewery’s menu includes a variety of beers that are brewed in-house
The Oviedo Brewing Company invites its guests to join them in raising a glass and sharing stories before the closure

OVIEDO, Fla. – For parents across Central Florida, the name Oviedo resonates deeply
especially for those whose children have participated in youth sports
News 6 had the opportunity to speak with Alan Greene
the father of Detroit Tigers star Riley Greene
who honed his skills in Oviedo Babe Ruth and at Hagerty High School
Alan Greene himself played baseball at Oviedo High school and has been coaching in the community for 33 years
witnessing the growth of numerous talented players
there’s Taylor Ward and also Vaughn Grissom
A lot of those guys have actually been in this cage,” Alan Greene said
Walking through his training facility and batting cage in Oviedo feels like stepping into a baseball museum
Alan Greene reminisces about the memorabilia that adorns his walls
including bats from notable players and memories of the fields at the Oviedo Sports Complex
He said what sets Oviedo apart is the spirit of teamwork
They’re not guys that think about themselves
And when they come back into the community
they give back to the community and that’s very exciting for me to watch that,” Alan Greene said
News 6 was the only local station at Riley Greene’s draft party
where more than 200 friends and family members gathered to celebrate his selection as the 5th overall pick in the MLB draft
The excitement in the room was palpable as they cheered for one of their own
Alan Greene attributes much of the success of Oviedo’s young athletes to the unwavering support from the community and the dedication of volunteer coaches

— The City of Oviedo is not getting a new police department any time soon after a ballot measure failed for the second time in two years
This time, against a bond referendum that would have allowed for the construction of a new 28,000 square foot police building using general obligation bonds to pay for it
Oviedo Police Chief Dale Coleman remembers the excitement of moving into the current building in 1990
who was looking forward to the extra space
he explained the department has outgrown the dated facility
we’re closing in on ourselves,” said Coleman
he points out where they’ve simply run out of space
what we have here is a full room,” said Coleman
He’s tried several times to secure the funds for a new building
Nearly $11 million dollars in bonds were already decided on by voters in 2016
but it was determined that an additional $20 million is needed to construct a new police building
voters voted no on a referendum to provide the additional funding
despite a $15 million dollar decrease in the cost of the project
I understand where they’re coming from,” said Coleman
“But it is frustrating when you’re you see the need
you wanna serve the people of you in a in a much higher level that we currently do
and I think that building would be able to go a long way to that.”
Oviedo Mayor Megan Sladek says she was against putting the item on the ballot
it would have increased property taxes by about $145 dollars a year for someone that owned a $300,000 dollar property per the city
we need to find a way to fund it that doesn’t involve raising property taxes as much and the obvious way at this point
since the one-cent sales tax has been renewed
is to use that funding source,” said Sladek
she thinks more conversations need to be had
“I think we need to ask residents,” said Sladek
Is it because you don’t like the way we’re funding it
you’d rather have it be sales tax instead of property tax
or is it that you want to have a different style
he’s ready to go back to the drawing board
“So we will figure out a way to do it because the need is here,” he said
He plans to go in front of the council for a bid proposal for a new roof to at least stop the leaking in their current building
– The first day of February brought a spike in utility bills for Oviedo residents
Oviedo City Finance Director Jerry Boop explained the stormwater portion of the bill rose 25% from $11.72 to $14.65
The same portion will increase another 25% in 2026 and then 15% per year through 2029
That 9% yearly jump will continue through 2028
That means for a homeowner who pays $100 per month in utilities to the City of Oviedo
that bill will increase to around $108 as of this month
City of Oviedo councilmembers will vote on making the hike permanent
according City of Oviedo spokesperson Lisa McDonald
“As our Finance Director stated during the [previous] meeting
there are not enough funds available in the stormwater enterprise fund to pay for future projects
which is why the city has proposed new Stormwater Utility rates starting Feb
“The city is currently seeking approval of new stormwater rates to address a series of stormwater capital improvement projects and to fund increasing operational costs affected by national economic inflation
Boop told city councilmembers at last month’s Council meeting there is no money available in city’s stormwater fund
“We’re actually underwater in stormwater.”
City staff told councilmembers 37 projects in water and sewer utility (pipelines
facility improvements) and 51 proposed capital improvement projects (creek
pond improvements) have been identified over the next 10 years
“The capital projects represent varying levels of priority and are anticipated to be addressed over a 10-year period,” McDonald said
“While the stormwater utility is currently underfunded
there are a number of projects in different degrees of development to address infrastructure deficiencies.”
Oviedo homeowner Kevin Nowak said several residents on Orange Avenue have been notifying the city of drainage issues since 2022
Nowak shared photos with News 6 showing the severe flooding in his yard after Hurricane Ian and hurricanes thereafter
He said on a summer afternoon during a typical thunderstorm
“The stormwater system was obviously damaged
compromised and or not capable of the water volumes,” Nowak said
“The drainage issues prior to 2022 were limited to roadway flooding
and Sweetwater Creek exceeding its banks just slightly then receding shortly after rains stopped which was the reasons for residents to notify the city.”

— Oviedo city leaders are considering a utility rate increase to fund critical infrastructure projects
with a final public discussion scheduled for Monday night at City Hall
The proposed 10-year Capital Improvement Project aims to address the city’s aging stormwater
Mayor Megan Sladek said these upgrades are necessary to prevent flooding during heavy rain events and to support future population growth
and we don’t have any money saved up because we’ve been charging so little,” Sladek said
“It didn’t really all need to be done until very recently
the plan would increase utility rates by 25% in both 2025 and 2026
The city plans to borrow $100 million to fund $153 million worth of projects
with the total repayment amount reaching $185 million due to interest
Sladek also clarified that the proposed rate hike is unrelated to new development within the city
“When pipes that are 30 to 40 years old fail within a subdivision
that’s got nothing to do with new construction happening elsewhere
Residents are encouraged to attend Monday night’s meeting to voice their opinions before the City Council makes a final decision on Monday
