FL – Following a thorough review of the match officials’ reports and the respective positions of both clubs the Concacaf Disciplinary Committee has cleared LAFC player Sergi Palencia of any discriminatory action While the evidence confirms that the interaction between Palencia and Colorado Rapids player Chidozie Awaziem involved inappropriate language it is clear to the Committee that the word reported by the Colorado Rapids in its official position to Concacaf was not used and fans to participate in our sport positively and with respect for the opposition There is no room for discrimination in our game Secure tickets to see the stars of LAFC for the 2025 season and opportunities to get involved in the community Following the second match of the first-round series, Rapids coach Chris Armas said that Awaziem had been left visibly upset after being called a derogatory term, with Colorado also later releasing a statement in support of its player, leading Concacaf to launch a review into the matter "Following a thorough review of the match officials' reports, available match footage and audios, and the respective positions of both clubs, the Concacaf Disciplinary Committee has cleared Los Angeles FC player Sergi Palencia of any discriminatory action," Concacaf said in Tuesday's statement "While the evidence confirms that the interaction between Palencia and Colorado Rapids player Chidozie Awaziem involved inappropriate language Sergi Palencia has been cleared by Concacaf of using discriminatory language. Harry How/Getty Images"Concacaf will continue to urge teams Awaziem also released a statement on social media saying he was subject to abusive language on the field "During last night's Concacaf Champions Cup match I believe I was subjected to abusive language on the field -- something I have never experienced from another player before," said his post "Concacaf has been clear with its 'What's Wrong is Wrong' campaign that discrimination has no place in our sport we need to know that these standards are upheld and that we're protected on the field." The good news on Tuesday is that LAFC defender Sergi Palencia has been cleared of using a term that violates Concacaf’s policy on discriminatory language following an explosive incident and subsequent investigation in last week’s Concacaf Champions Cup match against the Colorado Rapids The first two paragraphs of Concacaf’s statement: But from there, the situation went off the rails Colorado Rapids manager Chris Armas chose not to address the incident until reporters asked him directly about it and even then was somewhat vague with use of the phrase “derogatory remark.” His counterpart Steve Cherundolo wasn’t much clearer about the allegations toward his player it took nearly 12 hours for Concacaf to issue an official statement on the matter That was in stark contrast to how the MLS communications team has handled such situations in which communication about the allegations and impending investigation was much more straightforward There are probably a couple lessons here Concacaf needs to learn The first – and maybe most important – is that it is possible to clearly communicate the nature of the allegations have been made while also making sure the accused player has due process Nothing has been said officially in this regard but perhaps some of the apparent hesitancy of coaches or Concacaf representatives to speak publicly on the matter in the immediate aftermath was based on speculation that the likely true nature of events involved some sort of misunderstanding That potential always exists in the fog of war that can accompany intense athletic competition But it can’t be an excuse to forgo clear communication because it gives the public an appearance that there is either a lack of confidence in the ability to enforce such claims or a desire to cover up or minimize the nature of the allegations The second is that there needs to be more forward communication to fans that the potential for mix-ups in these kind of situations is very real and not merely an explanation used by a player coach or other participant trying to avoid punishment That potential exists even moreso in soccer than in most other North American pro sports given the limitless potential for mixing of languages accents and even disparity of meanings based on dialect Consider the backgrounds of the two players involved alone where the official language is English but tribal dialects are also spoken He has played professionally previously in Portugal Palencia is from the Catalonia region of Spain and has also previously played professionally in France These factors that need understood internally and communicated to fans they are not good excuses for weak or delayed response MLS generally appears to be ahead of the curve in this regard Last week’s feeling of confusion and even institutional suspicion generally hasn’t accompanied previous incidents in MLS matches It may have even been immensely fortunate that Lauziere While it’s not entirely clear how a referee from a different league may have behaved the protocol MLS uses was created in-house Concacaf likely had obstacles to overcome in this situation regarding manpower or familiarity relative to MLS That’s only reason to lean more on its American and Canadian domestic league partner to develop its own best practices and hopefully the result is that – if another unfortunate accusation is levied – the next several hours don’t feel like a potential cover-up Confusion arose at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles as the referees added six minutes of added time to the second leg of the first-round series Colorado Rapids head coach Chris Armas later explained that Awaziem was left visibly upset after being called a derogatory term causing a standstill in the game's last moments Concacaf is investigating LAFC's Sergi Palencia after an incident in the CCL match vs Colorado. Photo by Dean Mouhtaropoulos/Getty Images"Yeah there was an incident that happened on the field Our player Chidozie Awaziem was pretty clear and upset about a derogatory term that he said was clear about what was said," Armas said are fully behind our player to support him with the investigation to further investigate what went down Later on Wednesday, Awaziem released the following statement on social media: "During last night's Concacaf Champions Cup match I believe I was subjected to abusive language on the field -- something I have never experienced from another player before "Concacaf has been clear with its "What's Wrong is Wrong" campaign that discrimnation has no place in our sport A Concacaf spokesperson confirmed to ESPN that the organization will conduct a thorough investigation into the matter "Concacaf has initiated an investigation into a reported incident between players Chidozie Awaziem of Colorado Rapids and Sergi Palencia of Los Angeles FC during last night's Concacaf Champions Cup match The investigation will involve a thorough review of the match officials' reports and the respective positions of both clubs." When asked about the situation after the match, LAFC head coach Steve Cherundolo pledged his full support to the investigation and players We want to support the players," Cherundolo said The Colorado Rapids issued a statement on Wednesday "The Colorado Rapids fully support Concacaf's ongoing investigation into the reported use of abusive language by an LAFC player during last night's match at BMO Stadium and we stand with our players following these very serious allegations LAFC said: "LAFC is aware of the reported incident during last night's Concacaf Champions Cup match and is cooperating fully with the ongoing Concacaf investigation "LAFC is a club for all and stands against hate in any form We have spoken with our player about the incident and will continue to respect the investigative process." the energy centre is a district heating network powered by renewable energy presenting energy transition and environmental sustainability in an architectural language This small building is the visible part of a whole that remains hidden from view It is the head of a new energy infrastructure for the city of Palencia A District Heating network promoted by the company DH Ecoenergías a brave pioneer in the energy transformation of Spanish cities Palencia’s network is the first of a long series of similar projects that seeks to decarbonize a good part of the national urban geography turning off fossil fuel heaters – diesel and gas costly internationally sourced – to replace them with a clean network fueled by renewable resources that will largely come from an improved management of Spanish forests The District Heating network runs under the streets of the capital of Palencia carrying hot water produced with renewable energies – mainly forest biomass – to buildings in a good part of the city fulfils a technical function – hosting the hot water production processes – but at the same time it has a markedly pedagogical vocation desired by the client: to make the transformation visible and support and allow its dissemination This double condition requires the approach to the problem of industrial construction not only as a strictly functional matter where only the economic performance of the building matters the architecture of the Central is symbolic both in its geometry – based on energy and economic circularity – and in its materiality – which opts for literal and pedagogical transparency – presenting the whole as an identity Two main elements make up the building: a bathtub of heavy concrete and a light steel and plastic lantern – recyclable The base serves as support for all machinery and establishes terrestrial connections with the outside – through two large galvanized steel gates – and with the biomass silo located underground the concrete base has a cover that becomes a perimeter walkway that surrounds all the machinery The pill-shaped floor allows optimal circulation of visitors around the complete energy process The steel and plastic lantern reinterpret economical solutions typical of industrial buildings to establish a significant connection with the community it serves: a small cathedral of energy The facade of polycarbonate sheets – ribbed on three scales – is configured as a soft whitish veil supported on a delicate galvanized and painted steel wire structure a translucent tower expels the white smoke resulting from a filtering process that occupies most of the industrial space “This project must be an icon and reference for energy and environmental transformation and its architecture must symbolize the sources of renewable energies the improvement of public health in cities.” You must be logged in to post a comment advancing on away goals with the aggregate tied 2-2 Here’s the full statement Tuesday afternoon: “Following a thorough review of the match officials’ reports the Concacaf Disciplinary Committee has cleared Los Angeles FC player Sergi Palencia of any discriminatory action.  it is clear to the Committee that the word reported by the Colorado Rapids in its official position to Concacaf was not used.  Chidozie Awaziem speaks on the abusive language he suffered late in the LAFC game last night via his Instagram Neither Concacaf nor either club has clarified what Palencia is accused to have said Awaziem used the phrase “abusive language,” in a post on Instagram Rapids manager Chris Armas used the word “discriminatory” in the postgame press conference LAFC coach Steve Cherundolo stated Awaziem felt the language was directed towards him possibly suggesting a difference in understanding of the context Awaziem stated that the playing environment should protect “players of all races and cultural backgrounds,” in his Instagram post This is the only public statement to suggest that what was accused was racist in nature Burgundy Wave has reached out to Concacaf for clarification on what words were alleged to have been said what constitutes “discriminatory action” and “inappropriate language,” and how those two are different A Concacaf official declined to answer our questions and comment further beyond the issued statement Sources have told Burgundy Wave that what Palencia said was not in English and not racist in nature Palencia is from Spain and has played in France So the conversation could have happened in Spanish or French Concacaf’s banned language goes beyond race (homophobia Without more information from the Disciplinary Committee I’m hesitant to draw any conclusions they’ve announced their conclusion but kept the receipts private Most soccer players say swear words throughout the 90 minutes Is basic profanity considered “inappropriate language” to Concacaf There’s plenty of ways a player could say something discriminatory without using discriminatory profanity Did Palencia just say some generic Spanish swear words that many other soccer players say Did he say something racist without using a slur where do we draw the line on that being punishable There’s been plenty of LAFC fans on social media who’ve argued Awaziem should be punished for crying wolf implying he made this up to get a competitive advantage The only time a Concacaf or PRO referee has sent off a player for discriminatory language has been if they hear it directly Lauziere would have said what he heard in his match report There’s no precedent for an official giving a yellow or red card because of an accusation they aren’t first hand witness to Getting Palencia suspended a week later after an investigation wouldn’t have helped the Rapids in the final 10 minutes of the second leg stoping the game for this to try and get more stoppage time is at best a zero sum game The referee wasn’t going to stop the game for four minutes to hear Chido out and then add five minutes of stoppage time for that There’s no plausible outcome where the Rapids get a competitive advantage before the end of the game Awaziem speaks Spanish and French as second languages There’s a chance he misheard or misinterpreted what Palencia said There’s a chance his understanding of inappropriate language and what’s wrong to say on a football pitch is different from what Concacaf has defined as punishable The culture in other leagues he’s played in might be different there’s plenty of times in soccer where there’s a tackle That doesn’t automatically mean it’s a dive Without further details on the investigation, I’m not going to speculate on what Palencia allegedly said or presume the morality and intent of either player’s actions. Just like how last week I didn’t immediately assume Palencia was guilty and demand he be tarred and feathered by Rapids and LA Galaxy fans May 31 at BMO and October 18 at DICK’s just got more intense it is clear to the Committee that the word reported by the Colorado Rapids in its official position to Concacaf was not used,” Concacaf’s statement read Last Wednesday’s opening-round encounter was stopped after Awaziem made the accusation late in the second half head coaches from both teams acknowledged the incident and fans to participate in our sport positively and with respect for the opposition,” Concacaf continued in its statement “There is no room for discrimination in our game The Concacaf Champions Cup serves as the club championship of North America Though last week’s match was contested between two MLS teams the investigation and its findings were handled by Concacaf LAFC declined to comment on Concacaf’s findings The Colorado Rapids did not reply to a request for comment LAFC eliminated Colorado and advanced to the round of 16 with the club hosting the Columbus Crew in the first leg Tuesday night KECY) - Yuma's Elia Palencia signed her letter of intent to continue her academic and softball career at Scottsdale Community College on Monday Palencia signed in the Palace Gym in front of her friends and family The senior was visibly emotional as she thanked her family friends and coaches for their role in helping her on her way to this achievement "It was really hard to swallow," Palencia said "I was choking up kind of it was really emotional and seeing people get emotional was making me emotional too Last season Palencia hit .367 with eight extra base hits for the Lady Criminals Chas Messman joined KYMA in July 2023 as News 11’s Sports Director KYMA KECY is committed to providing a forum for civil and constructive conversation Please keep your comments respectful and relevant. the world have unfortunately become accustomed to witnessing in recent years Colorado defender Chidozie Awaziem began pleading with referee Pierre-Luc Lauziere Awaziem’s interactions closely mirrored MLS’s official protocol for incidents of hate speech which dictate the actions of its match officials during such moments Awaziem — who is Nigerian — once again began protesting this time directly to LAFC defender Sergi Palencia Fears of a potential incident of hate speech were confirmed after the match by Rapids head coach Chris Armas “There was an incident that happened on the field,” Armas said MLS and its referees are getting a taste of Messi's fiery side LAFC head coach Steve Cherundolo also confirmed the incident that bothered him,” Cherundolo told the media in attendance “He thought that it was directed towards him We’ll let the referees and Concacaf figure that out.” Concacaf has started an investigation into the incident and issued the following statement to The Athletic on Wednesday afternoon: “Concacaf has initiated an investigation into a reported incident between players Chidozie Awaziem of Colorado Rapids and Sergi Palencia of Los Angeles FC during last night’s Concacaf Champions Cup match Miami eliminate Sporting KC from Concacaf Champions Cup The two clubs both issued statements to The Athletic as well The Rapids said: “The Colorado Rapids fully support Concacaf’s ongoing investigation into the reported use of abusive language by an LAFC player during last night’s match at BMO Stadium offered the following: “LAFC is aware of the reported incident between LAFC’s Sergi Palencia and Chidozie Awaziem of the Colorado Rapids during last night’s Concacaf Champions Cup match and is cooperating fully with the on-going Concacaf investigation LAFC is a club for all and stands against hate in any form We have spoken with our player about the incident and will continue to respect the investigative process.” What Palencia is alleged to have said is not clear and neither head coach was asked about it after the match LAFC and MLS have not yet responded to The Athletic’s request for comment on Wednesday and advanced to a round-of-16 date with the Columbus Crew on the away-goals tiebreaker following a 2-2 aggregate draw has a history of incidents of racist hate speech United forward Taxi Fountas was forced out of MLS after repeated allegations of racial abuse the most recent of which involved his own teammate New York Red Bulls player Dante Vanzeir was suspended for six games and fined by the league for using a racial slur during a game against the San Jose Earthquakes Portland Timbers player Diego Chará accused a Minnesota United player of using a slur though that allegation could not be conclusively proven The league has also grappled with the use of homophobic language Sebastian Lletget and Santiago Sosa have all been suspended in recent years for violations of the league’s policy against discriminatory language What a performance from Sergi Palencia 🇪🇸 pic.twitter.com/7qrRX4h9ot — LAFC (@LAFC) July 6, 2024 Palencia improved across the board in 2024 when compared to his first season with the club in 2023 The Spanish defender saw a lot more playing time this season establishing himself as a pillar at the back and a player the club could rely on Making 30 appearances with 26 starts in the MLS regular season finished the season with 84% passing success rate ( a 4% improvement on last season) and doubled his assist tally finishing with four services this year The summer is when the defender really broke out putting together an outstanding run of form from late June through early October He secured two LAFC Player of The Month awards for his contributions and even had several highlight reel moments included one against Western Conference rivals Seattle Sounders The defender was the last line of defense in securing the clean sheet he come up huge with a headed clearance off the line to keep the clean sheet Sergi Palencia capped off another great performance with a goal-line save 🚫 pic.twitter.com/xCO74EzJWP — LAFC (@LAFC) July 21, 2024 Palencia finished the season with just under 48% aerial duel win rate as well as 12 clearances and nearly tripling his fouls with 51 on the season it was his physical presence mixed with agile ability that really stood out but also able to get back in defense and help secure the goal the best thing a player can do is improve on a yearly basis There has been a lot of change and turnover in defense and that could mean even more responsibility put on the shoulders of the Spaniard he is a player that can handle that weight and then some If he can put together a season that even slightly improves on last year we could be looking at a player ready to After averaging 93.8 mph with his four-seam fastball last summer Keller averaged 96.3 mph in his first spring outing Counsell said what Keller did was “a little more than we expected,” and even Keller was a little taken aback by his performance Brad Keller with his second strikeout. 97mph again pic.twitter.com/3xP9XxioXi — Aldo Soto (@AldoSoto21) February 20, 2025 “I’ve thrown that hard in the past before,” Keller said I was kind of surprised coming out of the game when they told me what my velo was.” Toward the end of last season in Boston and this offseason at Maven Baseball Lab in Atlanta Keller corrected some mechanical flaws that have helped him unleash another level with his velocity “One (drill) that has really helped out is the Kikuchi drill where you go up on your back leg and sit down on the back leg before you go forward,” Keller said “A cue I tell myself is drop my belt buckle before I go down So is Keller going to be built up as a starter or does a short-burst performance like Thursday’s 1 2/3 innings change the way they think about him “When you see that — that’s the right question,” Counsell said But I think taking the longer view — this is a pitcher who had big success in the league at a younger age Keller tossed 360 1/3 innings of 3.50 ERA ball with 57 of his 78 outings coming as a starter But if this type of velocity along with the development of a sweeper he’s fine-tuning this spring continues perhaps at some point in the season he’ll become a relief option These are decisions that don’t need to be made now Neither Keller nor Palencia is likely to be a part of the roster that leaves for Japan in three weeks But that doesn’t mean they won’t positively make an impact on the 2025 Cubs A bullpen that performs well for a full season almost always According to MARCA, tensions flared between the two athletes after the shove, leading to an exchange of words. Officials swiftly intervened, issuing Palencia a red card and disqualifying him for unsportsmanlike conduct. Palencia protested the ruling, arguing that Lopez’s move on the final lap impeded him and should have been penalized instead. However, race officials reviewed the situation and ultimately upheld the disqualification, dismissing Palencia’s appeal.
