dynamic and vibrant one-way promenade designed with the community in mind now welcomes residents and visitors with wide sidewalks
and inviting public spaces that encourage walking
The new promenade transforms the corridor into a safer and more beautiful route for active transportation.
Caltrans and the City of Anaheim today celebrated completion of the effort with a ribbon cutting ceremony that included Anaheim Mayor Ashleigh Aitken
The project was made possible with $2.6 million in grant funding through Governor Gavin Newsom’s Clean California initiative – a sweeping $1.2 billion
multiyear cleanup effort led by Caltrans to remove trash
create thousands of jobs and engage communities to transform public spaces
The City of Anaheim also provided a local match of $1.4 million toward the project.
“Partnerships are at the heart of everything we do at Caltrans,” said Caltrans District 12 Director Lan Zhou
“Collaborating with cities like Anaheim allows us to bring transformative projects to life—projects that not only enhance safety and mobility
but also build community pride and improve quality of life
The North La Palma Parkway Promenade is a shining example of what’s possible when state and local agencies work together toward a shared vision of a cleaner
the project turned a conventional two-way asphalt road into a dynamic esplanade that enhances access to open space
connects residents to nearby transit and commercial corridors
and revitalizes a historically underserved area
It also addresses long-term environmental stewardship goals by promoting walkability
and integrating sustainable infrastructure
The project is further enriched by a bilingual education and outreach campaign focused on anti-littering and anti-graffiti messages
supported by events like a community clean-up day and tree-planting initiative
These efforts aim to foster civic pride and long-term stewardship among residents
“This marks an exciting chapter for one of Anaheim’s most historic and iconic parks,” Mayor Aitken said
“We’ve turned two roads into a walkable promenade that now serves as a gateway to La Palma Park
This transformation reflects a shared commitment with our state partners to build a healthier
Caltrans and its local partners through the Clean California Initiative have picked up more than 2.9 million cubic yards of litter – enough to cover nine lanes of Interstate 5 with trash from the Mexican border to Oregon
Caltrans also hosted more than 650 free dump days in communities throughout the state – resulting in the collection of more than 15,500 mattresses and 57,000 tires
The initiative has enlisted more than 72,000 community clean-up volunteers and created thousands of jobs
including positions for individuals who were formerly incarcerated
or experiencing housing insecurity.

Opinions and recommendations are ours alone
I adore the AC Hotels by Marriott brand for its great overall value
Marriott describes the brand as “Distinctively Select” with “modern designs for modern businesses” and mentions that AC Hotels by Marriott can be found in more than 175 destination cities worldwide
I have stayed at several AC Hotels by Marriott
and have found all have been centrally located within the city with consistent good-quality and reasonably-priced food
and with service that has always been friendly and efficient
Ready to add another AC Hotel to my experience list, I selected the AC Hotel Ciutat de Palma for my November 2022 visit to Palma
The hotel is indeed modern and more boutique in style and ambiance
I was eager to stay at this property and particularly excited to share my experience with you
I frequently book flights out of Chicago O’Hare (ORD) as fares can be less expensive than from Northern Michigan where I live
I normally look for fares without a predetermined destination in mind and let the best flight deals lead the way
The positioning flight to ORD from northern Michigan is about 35 minutes and easy to book
for 7,500 to 15,000 miles with American Airlines
I always check hotel availability prior to booking my flight
A good fare deal can be negated if affordable lodging isn’t available
While it’s usually a preference to book my hotel stays with points, in some cases the cash rate is a much better value. Such was the case with the AC Hotel Ciutat de Palma. For a 2-night stay, 52,000 Marriott Bonvoy points would have been required to book the room
I was able to find a flexible cash rate of €98 (~$102) per night for a total of ~€219 (~$227) with taxes and fees for the entire stay
Hot Tip: Members of the Marriott Bonvoy loyalty program receive the fifth night free when booking 5 consecutive award nights
if an award night costs 20,000 Marriott Bonvoy points
a 5-night stay will cost you 80,000 points
You do not have to have elite status to qualify for this benefit
The hotel is just 11 km (~ 7 miles) from the Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI)
so a taxi is the most efficient way to reach the hotel
I also had the option of taking the public bus
but would have taken nearly an hour or required changing buses
The hotel has a prime location in the heart of Palma
There is no formal driveway or covered approach for the hotel
but the area in front of it is marked for drop-off and taxi transport
making it easy to be dropped off right at the door
at night the signage on the hotel is brightly lit
I arrived at the hotel around 2 p.m and my room was not yet ready
I was told it would be ready about 45 minutes from then
I was offered a choice of 500 Marriott Bonvoy points or a daily €10 (~$10) food and beverage credit
I chose the €10 daily credit as the points would be worth only ~$3.50
even with my Marriott Bonvoy Titanium Elite status
my status was acknowledged and I was thanked for my loyalty
My surprise was due to the fact that I had requested
to use my Suite Night Awards (a benefit you can select when achieving top Marriott Bonvoy elite status) and was unsuccessful
There is just 1 suite in the hotel so I was pleased that it was mine to enjoy
It’s also a plus to have cold water waiting at check-in
Cold water flavored with lemons and limes was offered in the lobby.Advertisement
Bikes for rent were available in the lobby area
The rate included insurance if the bike should become damaged
And if you require a ride back to the hotel
the sponsoring company will come and pick you up
The hotel has several private lounging spaces
including 2 major seating areas in the outdoor atrium located between the lobby and the restaurant/bar area
located on the bottom floor of the hotel (-0 on the elevator)
the fitness room was never in use during my 3 visits (to take photos and visit the adjacent restroom)
making it easy to print a required document or complete a task not easily done on a smartphone
The hotel has 2 meeting rooms with the largest room having a capacity of 60
The hotel also has a complete supply of supporting audio/visual equipment
On-site underground parking is located on the lower level of the hotel
There is a €22 (~$23) per day charge and parking spaces are limited
The hotel provides laundry services for a fee and can arrange babysitting services
I was modestly excited when I headed to my room — #507 — and was even more excited to find that I actually had rooms 506 and 507
On the interior side of the entry door to 507
There was another identical entry door in the bedroom (room 506)
a bedroom and bathroom were off to the right and a separate living area and bathroom were off to the left
I was greeted with a note from the hotel manager
I received another welcome gift from Sofia at the front desk
I had asked her some questions earlier which evidently prompted her to follow up with a note containing additional recommendations and this offering of local specialties
The living area was well-appointed with a sofa bed
was located in the living area on a side table
Both were in the 50-inch range and had 49 channels
of which ~5 were English-language channels
The bedroom was spacious with plenty of open floor space to move around
and it was a totally separate room from the living area with its own entrance
big enough to just stand on and enjoy the view
The king-sized bed was comfortable and each of the 4 pillows had a different firmness
The right nightstand had an electrical outlet
The left nightstand was equally equipped with personal lighting
Across from the bed was a nice storage unit with drawers and a padded top for luggage
There was also a comfy sitting chair adjacent to the windows
There were 2 identical closets in the suite — 1 located in the living area and 1 in the bedroom
Each closet contained a comfy robe and slippers
The living area closet held the ironing board
while the bedroom closet held the safe and a copy of The Book of Mormon
My suite had 2 identical bathrooms — 1 located off the primary bedroom and 1 adjacent to the living area
I like a full granite bathroom and this one was similar to the one I had during my last AC Hotel stay at AC Hotel Málaga Palacio
the shower had a shower wand that dueled as a shower head
this AC Hotel has transitioned to full-size amenities mounted in the shower
Incidental amenities such as dental and vanity kits
and a shoe shine sponge were also provided
The internet signal was very strong throughout the building
except not as much in the wing where my suite was located
If I stepped near or outside the door of my room
a tradeoff as I wasn’t willing to trade rooms
the views from the living area and from the bedroom were extraordinary
you could see the cathedral in the distance and the harbor
I could see the port just beyond the buildings
The views were the same from the living area as the bedroom
The AC Hotel Ciutat de Palma has 1 main dining/bar area
the entire area is turned into a restaurant
and then dinner service was open from 7:30 p.m
There was no lunch service on weekends at the time
but breakfast and dinner were served each day
Breakfast was served in the main restaurant/bar area from 7 a.m
I could enjoy my breakfast in my choice of several different spaces throughout the restaurant/bar area
There were several choices in the cereal and yogurt section
While there was a nice selection of meats and cheeses
There was a lovely selection of bread ready to be toasted or eaten as is
Individual servings of chopped fruit and fruit juices were offered
and whole fresh fruits were also available at the buffet
I really liked the selection of mostly local specialties
On the first night of my stay I ate at a local neighborhood restaurant versus the hotel
but the following night I couldn’t pass up the grilled octopus on the hotel restaurant menu
The dish was served with 2 small baguettes of bread
It was the most expensive dish on the menu but the whole meal was just €21 (~$22)
including a nice glass of Spanish Rioja wine
There are even electronic pagers on the tables you can use to call a server if you’re located in a remote corner of the space and can’t be seen by the server
Since the dining and bar area was so expansive
there was always a comfortable place to sit
Beer and wine ranged from €3.50 to €4 (~$4) and mixed drinks from €8 to €10 (~$8 to $10)
Each Friday the AC Lounge offers a special cocktail along with a local tapa (appetizer) for just €9 (~$9)
The front desk staff were incredibly knowledgeable about the area and assisted me in arranging activities and figuring out the bus routes
Here are some highlights you also won’t want to miss in the area surrounding the hotel:
The Harborfront and Port — I could see the waterfront from the hotel and it was just a block or so away
especially in the early morning and at sunset
In the evening there was a nice selection of restaurants
Old Town Palma and the Cathedral — A visit to Palma would not be complete without exploring the Old Town and the magnificent Palma Cathedral
It took me about 20 minutes to walk there from the hotel
Miró Museum — I am an art aficionado but you don’t have to be one to appreciate the life and talent of artist Joan Miró
The nearby museum was his residence and houses an exhibition of his art
Take bus #46 directly to the museum or it’s just a short taxi ride
An Excellent Base for Excursions — Most of the tour companies have complimentary hotel pick-up at properties located in the city center
I had a cave exploring excursion scheduled (just $39) that was unfortunately canceled at the last minute due to not enough participants
but it included central hotel pickup for that price
Bellver Castle — Take the hop-on/hop-off bus that stops near the hotel
or a quick taxi to explore this gothic-style 14th-century structure
I found the view to be one of the best in Palma
Historic Train and Tram — I hopped on this rare 1912 narrow-gauge railway train and made a delightful escape from the city of Palma to the Mallorcan countryside
The 1-hour train journey up into the mountains from Palma to Sóller then connects to the historic tram that goes on to Port Sóller for another 20 minutes
Dining — The AC Hotel Ciutat de Palma is located in a lively neighborhood with endless dining options
I found several neighborhood eateries just steps from the hotel
The locals like to walk their dogs and stop for a beverage and/or bite
Shopping — Don’t leave Palma without shopping for Mallorca pearls
Centre Pearls located near the cathedral was a store I really liked but there are numerous choices depending on whether you want to find unique pieces or everyday wearables
Supermarkets — I found several mini-marts within a 5-minute walk of the hotel
A more expansive and modern supermarket is Mercadona
an 8-minute walk directly up the street when you turn right out of the hotel
Every staff member I encountered at the property was genuinely friendly
Sergio and Sofia at the front desk were especially helpful in answering my questions
and making suggestions for additional activities
I did receive a follow-up call to ask if there was anything I needed
I think the service I received was as good as it gets
My stay at the AC Hotel Ciutat de Palma was uneventful (in a positive way) and very pleasant
who can complain about an apartment-sized room with an incredible view
I would say that traveling during the shoulder season has its tradeoffs
or were canceled at the last minute due to low participation
There were things I wanted to see and do that were not available
Finding a modern hotel under $100 a night in a central location
with great staff and good service is a real win
It also means I may stay again at the AC Hotel Ciutat de Palma when I return to the area
The AC Hotel Ciutat de Palma does not have a pool but has 2 nice outdoor spaces to sit and relax
the hotel does not have an airport shuttle
but the hotel is just 11 kilometers (about 7 miles) away from the airport
so a taxi is a reasonable and efficient way to reach the hotel in less than 15 minutes
You can also use the public bus for ~€5 (~$5) which will take around an hour
It’s in an excellent location with surrounding restaurants
The hotel is located close to the water and can serve as a good base for exploring Palma

Ten new classes joined the action on Day 2
bringing the total to 11 divisions for this edition
Three racecourses and over a hundred yachts filled the Bay of Palma
where light and unstable winds kept both the Race Committee and the fleet on their toes until the very end
With winds proving too light in fact three classes will actually have to wait until tomorrow to make their debut
The Bay of Palma was a sea of sails today as the second day of the 21st Sandberg PalmaVela got underway
Following the Maxis’ opening day alone on the renowned Bay on Thursday
Friday saw the addition of five ORC divisions
With all 11 classes spread across three race areas
Sandberg PalmaVela once again demonstrated its inclusive and diverse appeal
bringing together both professional and amateur crews
and yachts ranging from giant 30-metre Maxis to the smallest boat in the fleet — the 6.40-metre Viper Team Balearia
helmed by Mallorca’s own María Bover competing in ORC Sportboat
Light and Shifty Winds Challenge the Fleet
Wind conditions were probably the defining factor of the day
with light and highly variable breezes making life difficult for both the fleet and the race committees
The unstable winds across nearly the entire bay forced several races to be abandoned mid way through and required repeated adjustments to the race areas
Classes scheduled for coastal races — ORC 0
and A2 — managed to complete their courses in breeze ranging from five to seven knots
and ORC 3 fleets finally completed a windward/leeward race late in the day
and ORC 4–5 fleets took to the water and even began racing
but their races were abandoned and they will need to wait until tomorrow to open their scoreboards
The imposing Maxis attempted a race shortly after 13:00 but the wind died
a collision between Spirit of Lorina and Magic Carpet E resulted in both yachts retiring from the day’s racing
at 16:30 the Race Committee managed to set a fair course
Magic Carpet E and Spirit of Lorina did not return to the racecourse and were instead meeting with the International Jury regarding the protest filed over the earlier incident
while the German Rose Bullit (Wally 80) secured third overall in the Maxi fleet thanks to finishing second in the only race of the day
ORC 2 and ORC 3 got their single race of the day underway after 17:00
owned by Polish sailor Marcin Sutkowski and helmed by Joan Navarro
took victory in the largest class of the regatta
Falapouco from RCN Torrevieja leads the fleet after finishing 11 seconds ahead of Meerblick
a familiar name at PalmaVela skippered by Germany’s Gabriele Pohlmann
The elegant classics of the Spirit of Tradition class sailed a 17-nautical-mile coastal race around the bay
won both on the water and on corrected time
finishing more than six minutes ahead of Little Thila and nine ahead of Micanga
ORC 0 and ORC 1 classes had longer coastal courses of 23 nautical miles
Vudu and HM Hospitales-Hyatt lead their respective divisions after the day’s racing
The A2 double-handed classes also completed a 20-nautical-mile coastal race
skippered by Tito Moure — already a PalmaVela winner — capitalised on their experience to take the day’s victory
it took more than four hours to complete the course
with Minimon of Miquel Matas (RCNP) winning the day

Both are key reasons why it's the best e-reader I've ever used
and why I've been able to spend the past year reading instead of doomscrolling (quite as much
the newer device has a mostly useless fingerprint scanner
and a more recent version of Android—but it costs $54 more as of this writing
thanks in part to the aforementioned $20 tariff-related price increase) and either one will serve you well
I've owned several e-ink tablets over the years
dating all the way back to the third-generation Kindle (the one with the keyboard) my parents gifted me way back in 2010
I've always found the proportions of the standard 6-inch e-reader screen a little awkward—too squarish to feel like an actual book
For a while I used a larger 7.8-inch Nook Glowlight Plus
and while the extra screen real estate was nice
it was hampered by slow software and difficulties loading library books
I never stuck with one for long (see above
and all that device-hopping means my e-book collection is spread across multiple incompatible ecosystems (Nook
and I have five different reading apps loaded on it
my phone also gives me ready access to the rest of the internet
I will pull out my phone intending to read and end up checking my notifications and getting sucked into the latest horrors on the news
or maybe just mindlessly scrolling dog Reels
It is basically the same size as an iPhone 15 Plus
it mirrors the screen size I've gotten used to from my years of reading on a phone
But it still has the benefits of a black-and-white e-ink display—which
means more immersion into whatever I'm reading
it runs on a fairly standard version of the Android 11 operating system
which means I can download all of the different reading apps I want
and I don't have to worry about being tied to a particular retailer
the Palma offers everything I've ever wanted from an e-ink reader
which is probably why I'm still using it after nearly a year
Unlike the extremely clunky screens on most e-readers
which suffer from severe lag that makes even scrolling a webpage unpleasant
the Palma offers four different refresh modes
from HD (best for reading super-crisp text on a static screen
which can handle scrolling through your social media feeds with responsiveness close to what you'd get with an LCD screen
the onscreen keyboard still feels slightly laggy
with characters appearing a noticeable fraction of a second after you press them
the Palma is certainly fast enough to deliver your e-books at a clip
and turning pages or skipping through chapters rapidly is no problem
too: Provided the app allows it (as does the native PDF reader
you can pinch to zoom in and out and enjoy near-instantaneous performance
which is much more than I can say for trying to magnify a PDF on my old Nook
The device also lets you browse the internet with minimal lag
and apps load quickly enough that I never felt like I was using a lesser device
My biggest beef with my various Kindles and Nooks was the fact that I don't particularly love the user experience for either device—generally
I think the Kindle and Nook iPhone apps work a lot better than the stodgier e-reader versions
The beauty of the Palma is that on the operating system level
its fairly unrestricted Android 11 OS offers flexibility you won't find in any proprietary on-device software
Instead of resigning yourself to sorting and displaying your books however your Kindle wants you to
you can choose whichever app(s) you like best
as long as they're available for download in the Google Play store (sorry
no jailbreaking or side-loading required (though you can certainly do the latter if you like)
any and all of these apps are open to you—though Onyx has its own default reading app
you are in no way railroaded into using it
perhaps best of all for this Mac user who is frequently frustrated at the hoops one has to jump through to load content onto an iPhone or iPad
allowing you to drag files directly into the folder where you want them
without the need for a workaround like using a cloud storage app or sending an email to the Kindle servers
Android support means you can also use the Palma to listen to your audiobooks—there's no headphone jack
but it will pair with your Bluetooth headphones easily enough
It does have an external speaker—only one; one of the speaker grilles on the bottom of the device is ornamental—but the sound quality is mediocre at best
I tested out syncing audiobooks via Audible and the Kindle app, and it worked as expected, as did playing audiobooks downloaded from Libby. There's enough onboard storage—128GB, with a SIM tray for up to 1TB of extra storage—to hold an awful lot of audio material. (I'm not a heavy audiobook listener, but I did download Pocket Casts to try out the Palma as a podcast machine
as it syncs with my Apple Watch and automatically connects to my Beats earbuds
My favorite thing about the Palma is I can plug it into my laptop and easily sideload books
and do anything else you can accomplish via drag and drop
The Android OS isn't shy about letting me see the file structure and put things exactly where they need to go
if you're willing to put in a little effort
read in Wingdings: The possibilities are endless
Android support means you can download more than reading apps
doing anything but reading feels like a chore
but it actually is feasible to browse the web and even watch videos on the Palma
Play a YouTube video and you'll certainly be able to tell what you're looking at
though the ghosting will get worse the longer it goes on (the screen refreshes itself when things get too busy—or you can tap a button to trigger a manual refresh)
but considering I could barely read my email on my first Kindle's "experimental" web browser
I would never suggest that using any non-reading app on the Palma is a great experience
their comparable ugliness to how they'd look on a full-color LCD is a boon—as I noted at the start of this review
I'm using the Palma because I want to read more books
If I want to be distracted by an immersive screen experience
One oddity of the Palma OS is a lack of support for dark mode at the system level
I personally don't much like the effect of reading in dark mode—that is
white text on a black background—especially on an e-ink display
And the Palma doesn't have a simple setting allowing you to turn dark mode on or off
The device will support dark mode on the app level
but you'll be required to mess around with the settings in each app individually
another Chinese company that makes a number of e-ink mobile devices.)
at least when it comes to modern flagship devices: the Palma isn't significantly waterproof
technically even iPhones are only "water resistant," but that translates to "they can survive being immersed in water for half an hour." The Palma is "water resistant" in that a few raindrops on the display won't hurt it
but if you drop this thing in the tub or the pool
Waterproofing is hardly a universal e-reader feature—the entry-level Kindle doesn't have it—but it would be a welcome addition to such a pricey device
My mixed reactions to the Palma as an Android device aside
The form factor is what it is—I personally find the 6.13-inch screen very pleasant
and the 1648 x 824 screen resolution at 300 ppi means the text is always super crisp and readable
The build quality feels good: the screen is "micro-etched glass" that mostly avoids issues with glare
the physical buttons are responsive and easy to click
and the back cover is lightly textured and easy to grip
Physical buttons are a rarity on modern e-readers
and since discontinuing the pricey Kindle Oasis
Amazon doesn't even sell one with them any longer
The Palma has a bunch: The right hand side features the power button
while the left hand side has a multi-functional action button
most of the reading apps I've tried will allow you turn pages by either tapping the touch screen or using the up/down buttons
making it easy to read one-handed (especially considering how light it is—around 170 grams)
You can also change your settings to read via infinite scroll using either your fingertip or the volume button
The additional button on the left side can be mapped to a number of different functions based on a quick press
which is handy if you frequently find yourself annoyed by the faint ghosting that can plague any e-ink screen
The front light is comparable to what I've experienced with other modern e-readers—you can adjust the brightness and the warmth to suit your comfort level
you will definitely notice a visible "ring" around the edge of the screen
which isn't something I've noted with other e-readers
I wasn't super impressed by the auto-brightness option
which purports to set the best brightness level based on your current lighting conditions
it tended to waffle back and forth between too bright and too dark
It's easy enough to adjust the lighting manually that I wasn't much bothered by this
but it's worth noting (and turning the feature off)
One of the benefits of e-readers is that their basic displays sip power instead of gulping it
And while the Palma will go a lot longer between charges that your smartphone
in my anecdotal experience (I didn't run a dedicated battery test) it doesn't last quite as long as a Kindle
especially if you're using a lot of different apps that require more refreshing
Reading for an hour or two a day with the front light on throughout will drain the battery by half over the course of a week
while the Amazon claims Kindles can last several weeks on a single charge
listening to audiobooks or podcasts with Bluetooth headphones for a few hours—could see you charging the Palma as often as every other day
You can stretch out this timeline by dimming the light or reading with it turned off
I appreciate that I don't need to charge it every day
but I would prefer not to have to charge it quite so often
at least—up to 50% in half an hour or so
I feel fairly safe in saying the Palma does everything I want it to very well
and a bunch of stuff I don't really need it to do surprisingly well
It also can do a lot more that I've only tried for purposes of running it through its paces
including scanning documents with the default scanner-to-PDF app and taking photos and shooting video via the 16 megapixel rear camera (provided you download a camera app; there's no native default on the original Palma
The pictures will look like crap on the device itself
but if you hook it up to your laptop to access them
they seem comparable to anything you'd take with a basic smartphone camera—not iPhone quality by any stretch
but why does an e-reader need to have a camera at all
I'd prefer a cheaper device without a camera
As noted, the operating system is based on Android 11, and it's not updatable. This isn't a huge deal in terms of functionality right now, but it is conceivable that in the future, your reading apps' updates will no longer be compatible with an OS that's already more than four years old and has already reached its "end of life" when it comes to security updates
that also probably isn't worth worrying about for a device you'll mostly be reading on
but it's something to consider if you want to download apps that might contain sensitive personal data that bad actors could somehow get hold of via an unpatched security issue.)
There's also the fact that, as a Chinese company, Onyx isn't subject to the same privacy restrictions and laws as Apple or Amazon, but that's a well of paranoia I'd rather not dip into. That's more than I can say for some folks on the r/Onyx_Boox Reddit group
the only thing anyone would learn from looking at my Palma is that I read a lot of science fiction.)
as you'll get the usual benefits of Amazon
including Prime shipping and the option to reach out to its customer service if you have an issue with your device
All of this functionality does come at a price—the device originally cost $279, and dropped to $246 with the launch of the slightly upgraded Palma 2 late last year (I've compared the two devices; suffice it to say the differences are slight enough that you might as well save some money)
Even the discounted price is obviously much more than entry level Kindles
it's for you to consider how much you actually want your e-ink reader to do
and if the extra bells and whistles are worth paying for
there would be a "Palma Lite" that provides all the basics (form factor
good performance) and fewer of the extras (no camera
But all of its features and singular attributes make the Boox Palma is the best e-reader for me
and certainly the best e-reader I've ever used
and it has helped me read more and use my phone less
which is my number one priority when it comes anything I'm using to read (including an old-fashioned paper book)
I think there's a good chance you'll love it

The Onyx Boox Palma 2 comes with a refreshed user interface
A palm-friendly size makes the Boox Palma 2 an enticing ereader option
The new page-styling setup in the native library app is cleaner and more modern
The power button on the Boox Palma 2 is the only physical control that's got a flat surface
The Boox Palma (left) and the Boox Palma 2 (right) offer the same reading experience
Even the ebook titles have less text weight than before
making the library app look clean and nice
Taking pics with the Boox Palma 2's camera can be fun
The only difference between the two Palmas is the power button
which is slightly longer and flat on the new model
The Onyx Boox Palma 2 is physically identical to its predecessor
which isn’t a bad thing as it makes it a very unique ereader thanks to its 2:1 aspect ratio
but an updated user interface gives it a fresh feel
the new processor hasn't enhanced performance
and the added fingerprint scanner doesn't benefit the device
It also sticks to the older E Ink Carta 1200 screen
and the lack of writing capabilities is a missed opportunity just as it was with its predecessor
the Palma 2 is just as appealing as the original model for being the most compact ereader yet
No performance improvements with new chipset
Fingerprint scanner is fiddly and superfluous
I might wish for more ereaders like the Onxy Boox Palma 2
but I also recognize that its form factor is exactly what makes it so unique – just like its predecessor
I suppose I'd be hard pressed to appreciate it as much I do
The 2:1 aspect ratio on this 6-inch ereader makes it resemble a smartphone
and that's also what makes it so pocket friendly
It replaces the older Boox Palma as my favorite compact ereader as I have a sneaking suspicion the previous model could be discontinued in the near future
the two generations are near identical and
I’d have loved to see a slightly more premium-looking chassis to match the price tag
There’s only one physical difference between the original Boox Palma and the Palma 2 – the power button
It’s oh-so-marginally longer and flatter to accommodate a built-in fingerprint scanner
I don’t see the need for it on an ereader that can be set up with a passcode if security is top of mind
but it also doesn’t function as expected
It’s more miss than hit as you have to place your finger just so for it to be effective
I might find the fingerprint scanner superfluous
but learning that the Palma 2 got a new chipset to boost performance had me chomping at the bit to try it out
the upgraded processor hasn’t made much of a difference in real-world use
That’s not to say the performance is bad
it's just not any better (or worse) than what I experienced with the previous generation
What’s really a standout for me with the Palma 2 is its new user interface
Onyx has redesigned the app icons and NeoReader (native library app) settings
Even the settings list looks fresh thanks to less weight (thickness) to the text and the boxes
The whole setup is still more complicated than it needs to be – which is an issue I have with all Boox tablets – but it looks much nicer which
makes it easier to find the adjustments you need while reading
Onyx has also upgraded the OS to Android 13
which is good news for getting security updates for a little while yet
My biggest disappointment with the Palma 2 is that Onyx has stuck with using the same E Ink Carta 1200 display it did for previous model
and that stings when you consider how expensive the Palma 2 is over other 6-inch ereaders that sport the latest in E Ink screen technology
I still think there’s a missed opportunity here to add more functionality to the Palma 2 – writing capabilities would have made it a lot more appealing
something I noted about the older Palma too
Being able to slip it into my pocket to jot notes at media events and meetings would have made the Palma 2 an integral part of my daily life
I still can’t help but like the Palma 2
just for being the most compact and unique ereader I’ve tested
The Palma 2 shares the same launch price as its predecessor and will set you back $299.99 / €299.99 (about £250) / AU$499 at full price
It’s possible to see discounts on the US and European Boox Shop online storefronts during major sales
but Australian retailers stocking Boox tablets don’t usually have offers to make these expensive ereaders more accessible
the older Palma is now cheaper – listed for as low as $199.99/ €229.99 (around £190) / AU$399 on the Boox Shop and third-party resellers at the time of writing – and might be the better buy as there’s really no difference in performance between the two
The drop in price might also indicate that the original Palma might be discontinued once current stock has gone
The former will cost you $129.99 / £104.99 / AU$199 without ads
while the latter has a list price of $129.99 / £119.99 / AU$239.95 – both considerably cheaper than either of the Palmas
However, you have very limited storage on the Kindle and Kobo alternatives
while there’s 128GB of internal storage on the Palma 2
159 × 80 × 8 mm ((6.3 x 3.1 x 0.31 inches)
the Palma 2 is physically identical to the older model with one very minor difference that’s easy to miss even if you’re familiar with the previous generation
That’s the slightly longer power button to accommodate a fingerprint scanner
And to make sure you can place your finger properly on it
it's also the only flat button on the device
Onyx thinks its Palma 2 really is a phone because when you go to Settings to save a fingerprint for the first time
it tells you that the sensor is at the back of the device (go figure!)
you’ll know where to place your finger
At least the white model has silver buttons for a touch of pizzazz
but the black model has no such feature to break the plasticky monotony
What makes it look cheaper still is the white model – the one reviewed here – can quickly pick up stains and scratches
So it’s a good thing that it ships with a case in the box
After being in my work backpack for just one commute to the office
my white Palma 2 ended up with a small pink stain near its USB-C port and a scratch on the rear
A customizable button and a microSD card tray are extras many other ereaders don't offer(Image credit: Sharmishta Sarkar / TechRadar)The USB-C port has OTG support but hasn't worked for me(Image credit: Sharmishta Sarkar / TechRadar)The display
which is now previous-generation technology
with plenty of contrast to render text in sharp relief
the responsiveness of the display isn’t as good as what I’ve experienced with ereaders featuring the Carta 1300 screen
The 2:1 aspect ratio is still a novelty when it comes to e-paper devices which
is such a wonderful size for a compact and portable ereader
If you’re someone who typically reads on your phone when you’re commuting
you might want to consider the Palma 2 just for the reduced eye strain thanks to the e-paper screen
advise against being too close to water with the Palma 2 in hand as the plastic body is only splashproof – there's no waterproofing certification that Onyx has revealed
which was the same with the previous model too
• Design & display score: 3.5 / 5
doesn’t mean it should work like one – the Palma 2’s functionality is limited by its screen tech and yet it can do a fair few things most other mainstream ereaders can’t
it can run a plethora of third-party apps thanks to running on a trimmed-down version of Android 13 (an upgrade from the older Palma’s Android 11)
including music streaming platforms and mobile games
you will have to contend with a rather slow refresh rate compared to the standard smartphone
but I will admit that even some graphics-heavy mobile games aren’t too bad on the Palma 2
If you want to stick to reading applications
both the Kindle and Kobo apps work quite well on the Palma 2
the native library application – NeoReader – is very good and the refreshed interface makes it a lot nicer to adjust fonts and page styling now
Even the little niggle I’ve had with the Fonts folder not set up correctly within Storage in previous Boox devices has been sorted
BooxDrop is an easy enough tool to use – if you have your files saved on any PC – Windows or Mac – you can use the web platform to transfer files via the cloud
The older page-styling setup (left) was cluttered
but the Palma 2 (right) is easier to use(Image credit: Sharmishta Sarkar / TechRadar)New icons and less weight to the design gives the user interface of the Palma 2 (right) an airier look compared to the older model (left)(Image credit: Sharmishta Sarkar / TechRadar)The default sleep screen is different between the two generations
but these can be changed in Settings(Image credit: Sharmishta Sarkar / TechRadar)The rear camera is identical – the Palma 2 is the one on top(Image credit: Sharmishta Sarkar / TechRadar)The one other issue I faced with using the Palma 2 is the responsiveness of the screen
using the on-screen keyboard isn’t as smooth as I expected it to be
I had to occasionally tap on a letter or number a couple of times before it registered
and another colleague said he had no such problems when he tried it out for a short period of time
so I’ll put this down to being an isolated problem (or blame it on my sausage fingers)
Using the fingerprint scanner is a lot more frustrating though
I found you have to place your finger just right for it to work every time
something I don’t think any of us can do unless we’re concentrating
Using the fingerprint scanner to wake the device up or make purchases would have been a lot faster than a passcode
The rest of the user experience is quite good
particularly if you're judging it as an ereader
While the built-in speaker is perfectly fine for listening to audiobooks
I’d advise against using it for music – the sound quality isn’t good and you’ll be better served pairing a set of Bluetooth headphones or a speaker with the Palma 2
The older Palma already had a decent processor in the form of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 662
but Onyx has stepped it up by using a Snapdragon 690 chip in the Palma 2
the latter is the more powerful chipset and running Geekbench 6 benchmarking proves it to be so
that doesn't translate as well as I had expected
and neither is there any discernible difference in app performance and multitasking
although individual apps open a smidge quicker
that's not a deal breaker as the performance of the older model was just fine and the Palma 2 barely beats it by the skin of its teeth (figuratively speaking)
the Palma 2 handles mobile games – albeit in black and white – just as well as its predecessor
Games like Alphabear 2 and Two Dots work smoothly
but more graphics-heavy games like Monument Valley 2 and Sky: Children of the Light aren’t too bad either
I can only imagine how much the experience would improve if the next Palma came with a color screen
so running a benchmark app is easy enough(Image credit: Sharmishta Sarkar / TechRadar)Readability is fantastic
but overall performance hasn't seemed to improve much(Image credit: Sharmishta Sarkar / TechRadar)One of the biggest issues I’ve had with other Boox tablets while reading is ghosting
wherein a light overlay of the previous page can be seen
Thankfully this isn’t a problem on the Palma 2
and I didn’t even have to adjust refresh rates
The performance of the rear camera hasn’t improved at all
It’s the same 16MP lens from the original Palma and it’s not intended for taking photos
although I will admit it was fun doing so for a short while
The camera is meant for scanning documents but
the quality isn’t great and I think your smartphone will do a better job if it has scan functionality
If you do use the rear camera to scan a document
the native DocScan app has an OCR (optical character recognition) feature to convert the words on the scan into text
There's a marked difference in performance here with the text converting well
compared to the "gibberish" I experienced with the previous Palma
Scan quality is quite dismal with the Boox Palma 2...(Image credit: Sharmishta Sarkar / TechRadar)..but the photos aren't half bad – just don't expect phone-quality pics(Image credit: Sharmishta Sarkar / TechRadar)OCR text conversion on the DocScan app is now much better than before(Image credit: Sharmishta Sarkar / TechRadar)I can’t fault its battery life
It’s still the same 3,950mAh pack from the previous Palma and
you’ll easily get around 6-7 weeks out of a single charge
the screen brightness and the refresh rate
you can eke out four weeks before plugging it into the mains
Charging speed will also depend on whether you use a wall adaptor or your PC/laptop to charge the Palma 2
and it took about 2.5 hours to go from about 20% to full the two times I had to give it a charge during my testing period using an USB-A to C cable plugged into a port of a 65W adaptor
The only time I had it plugged into a dock for my laptop
it took an hour for the battery level to go from 25% to 38%
It's an expensive ereader with a cheap-looking build and upgrades that don't do it any favors
the plastic doesn't weather well and it still uses a previous-generation E Ink screen
The refreshed icons and setup layout makes this a much nicer Boox tablet to use
The upgraded processor hasn't really helped improve performance
It would be a lot more appealing if Onyx added a built-in stylus and writing capabilities
There’s no other ereader quite like the Palma devices
And I can tell you that the novelty doesn’t wear off quickly either
It’s not the 6.13-inch display that makes it so
but the 2:1 aspect ratio that no other ereader brand has on offer at the time of writing
the Palma 2 is the most compact ereader on the market
It’s phone-like size means it can be carried around in your pocket or slipped into any bag
You want to ease eye strain because you mostly read on your phone
The LCD and OLED displays on smartphones emit more blue light than e-paper displays
So if you find yourself tiring after reading a page or two on your phone
consider getting a similarly sized ereader
But if you only want to use it for reading
you’ll save a lot of cash by opting for a 6-inch Kindle or Kobo alternative
A device like the Palma 2 needs to justify its price tag better
and one way to do that is to offer more functionality – aka adding writing capabilities
That would make it really easy to recommend the Palma 2 at its price point
you might get frustrated by the small screen of the Palma 2
A larger e-paper screen – perhaps 7 or 8 inches – would be ideal in those cases
there's not a lot that can be directly compared to the Palma 2 and I'm hesitant to offer up the older model as an alternative in case it gets discontinued
there are other 6-inch ereaders that are lightweight and portable
I've picked three that I think would cover a few bases
I've also listed some of their basic specs as a comparison with the Palma 2
I began by following the on-screen setup instructions to connect to Wi-Fi
then customized some of the settings for refresh rate
There's a lot of customization options on a Boox tablet
so it's always best to get familiar with them before you start using a Boox ereader
Next, I used BooxDrop to access files (ebooks and music) from my Onyx cloud storage account that I've had from previous Boox reviews. I also connected to Google Drive to test other means of cloud transfer
I downloaded a few apps from the Play Store
Kindle and Kobo (the last two were deleted after a short testing period of a couple off days)
For the majority of the six-week testing period
I used the Palma 2 mainly as an ereader for an average of three hours a day
I occasionally used the native browser to surf the internet
and even used the native music player to play some sideloaded MP3 files
All other music listening was down via Spotify
To compare the two generations of Palmas side by side
I scanned a document to test the rear camera
took some sample photos with both models and ran Geekbench 6 on them to determine chipset performance
to find out what exact chipset is being used as Onxy doesn't reveal this spec
Having tested nearly 30 ereaders in the past few years
I've got the experience to determine whether a digital reader is a worthwhile investment

My Boox Palma is one of the most easily lovable pieces of tech I've ever used—an e-ink reader with a phone-like form factor that isn't locked down to one specific retailer's ecosystem
It has helped me read more and waste time on social media less
why is it so tricky to use it to listen to audiobooks?Like most people
my phone was my main driver for audiobooks
and podcasts—it was always with me and the apps made it super convenient
But I'd find myself pausing my book every time a notification pinged in my headphones
so I decided to shift that "content" over to my e-reader as well
Then I hit a snag: Every time I closed the protective cover that came with the device
it would go to sleep—shutting off the screen and the front light
While the Palma looks like a phone and runs on Android, it doesn't always act like a phone. And while my iPhone never gave me any problems playing audio with the screen off, doing the same on the Palma (or any other Boox device) requires some tinkering
While it would be nice if the Palma could play audio with the screen off right out of the box—as has been the case for every phone I've used since I got my first smartphone in 2010—you'll need to change a few settings to make it happen
The first thing you'll need to do is adjust your settings to allow apps that play audio to continue running in the background
In the interest of preserving battery life
the Palma OS turns this setting off for every app you download from the Google Play store
you can long press the icon of any app on the home screen
This will bring up a menu with a few different options
then make sure the slider next to Stay active in the background is turned to On
you'll need to stop the Palma's OS from "freezing" audio-playing apps running in the background
so keep that in mind as you make your decision. To unfreeze a single app
open Settings and scroll down to Apps and Notifications
find your audio-playing apps in the list of installed programs
turn the Do not freeze apps running in the background (such as audio/input method) slider to On
You can also stop the Palma from automatically freezing newly downloaded apps by turning the slider next to Automatically enable freezing after installing an app to Off
The last thing you'll need to do is keep the Palma from turning off Bluetooth and disconnecting your headphones after the device goes to sleep
tap Bluetooth Status After Sleep and select Stay Connected from the pop-up menu
(I'd also suggest turning on Always turn Bluetooth on when the device starts up from this menu
so you won't have to manually turn Bluetooth on every time you want to connect your headphones—though
that will affect your overall battery life
Now that that's taken care of, here are other settings you should consider changing on any Boox device

But the poet Michael Palma doesn't seem to mind
he published a translation of Dante's Inferno – the first book in Dante's epic poem The Divine Comedy
Palma took it a step further with a translation of the full poem
"The meter seemed looser than I thought it should be," Palma said in an interview
For this new translation of The Divine Comedy
Palma wanted to stay true to the rhyme scheme Dante invented for the epic poem – terza rima
The original poem is written in three lines where the first and third lines rhyme
and the second line sets up the rhyme scheme for the following tercet
Here's how Palma's version Canto 1 of the book 2
My wit’s small craft hoists sails for embarkation And takes its leave of such a cruel sea.I will sing the second region
where purgation Cleanses the human spirit of its sin So that it will be worthy of salvation
The challenge to approaching a translation of Dante's original Italian this way is that it means you can't concentrate on three lines at a time – you have to take larger chunks into consideration
Many other English translations opt for free verse
"And many of them are quite fine," said Palma
"But I think without reproducing the rhymes
you're certainly losing a lot of the sound value
– but just from a purely literal point of view
you're not showing the reader what Dante actually did in his poem," he said
what's the value in translating The Divine Comedy yet again
"Translation is a form of autobiography," said Joseph Luzzi
and author of a number of books about Dante
There's no rule that says the good translation has to be half accurate
Luzzi just published his own translation of a different work by Dante – Vita Nuova
much slimmer and more digestible than The Divine Comedy
It depicts a young Dante falling in love with his muse
the Vita Nuova represents this young poet's first monumental encounter with death in a way that changes his life," said Luzzi
sin and salvation – these are big themes that'll always be of concern to readers
And while translating Dante's work is a way of keeping his texts alive
no book is guaranteed immortality," he said
when they stop making sense to contemporary society

I'll be packing my bags and heading to a beautiful island just off the coast of northwestern Africa shaped by volcanic activity and dense
extensive beaches and towering waterfalls are a huge draw for many tourists
I'm in search of something a little more ..
This April, the island of La Palma — affectionately known as "Isla Bonita" (beautiful island) — will transform into a beacon for space lovers, scientists and stargazers alike as it hosts STARMUS La Palma 2025
the cosmos and the art of discovery under some of the darkest skies in the world
the largest single-aperture optical and infrared telescope in the world
The 2025 edition of STARMUS includes more than 45 speakers including Nobel Laureate Kip Thorne

There will be several events taking place across the island
with STARMUS Camps in Santa Cruz de La Palma and Los Llanos de Aridane bringing science and wonder to the streets of La Palma
These camps are a great way for the public to experience hands on exhibits
this year's festival also carries a deeper mission
La Palma was stuck by a volcanic eruption that displaced thousands of people and reshaped parts of the island
STARMUS La Palma 2025 is dedicated to supporting the island's ongoing recovery toward once again being a top tourist destination for night sky enthusiasts due to its pristine dark skies
It offers this support through its ability to revitalize local economies and create spaces for community engagement
Evenings at STARMUS will echo with music under the stars
including the Sonic Universe concert on April 26 in Puerto de Tazacorte as well as classical concerts in Santa Cruz de La Palma on April 25 and April 27

a Norwegian family goes on holiday to the Canary Islands when a young researcher discovers alarming signs of an imminent volcanic eruption
Cumbre Vieja is an active volcano on La Palma
The series culminates in a “megatsunami” capable of engulfing Europe and reaching as far as the east coast of the US
Disaster stories are hugely popular and La Palma is just the latest hit in the growing genre. In his book Disaster Mon Amour
the film critic David Thomson identifies the filmmakers’ goal of creating “a spectacle of devastation with cozy human interest”
But stories like La Palma can have real world impact
The series presents itself as being based on a real hypothesis
which is communicated by newscasters and a scientist in the title sequence of each episode
La Palma does nothing to capture the more up to date and reassuring science

While volcanic events can trigger tsunamis
as experts in volcanoes and the communication of disaster
we can assure you that the eruption and subsequent rapid collapse of the island depicted in the series isn’t a plausible scenario that scientists are concerned about
What should be taken more seriously are localised tsunamis. Such “megatsunami” scenarios have been debunked in recent years you’ll be happy to hear
There have been more than 17 eruptions in the Canary Islands since the 1400s
none resulting in a “megatsunami” across the Atlantic
Stories have the power to communicate information about environmental risk for audiences. Following the release of the film, some have dug up the megatsunami hypothesis
Such a large tsunami would leave telltale deposits in North and South America – but they are nowhere to be found
The importance of understanding the risk relating to real volcanoes was encapsulated during the 2021 eruption of Cumbre Vieja. As the eruption progressed, volcanologists received messages from concerned and frightened people fearing a megatsunami, which prompted the US Geological Survey to respond outlining why the hypothesis doesn’t carry
This was even before a major Netflix drama had recounted such an imaginary event
Volcanogenic tsunamis of all sizes are a real threat around the world and hazards experts want to know what our risks are so we can prepare and protect our communities
This becomes difficult when facts are diluted or distorted by stories like La Palma’s
Volcanologists with limited resources during an eruption end up spending more time debunking information rather than talking to the press about the potential dangers
Misinformation about eruptions and their risks can add to the stress of those inhabiting or visiting volcanic islands, not only concerned about their own safety, but the security of an economy that relies heavily on tourism. With the right information, we can empower communities to prepare themselves and to act fast when the time comes
but not many people read scientific papers on volcanology
it might be that the responsibility of getting the science right and accurately representing risk should lie with the people with a captive audience
There is an opportunity to work with scientists to help spread the right information alongside promotion for future stories about such disasters

to the desserts,” Rome-native Executive Chef Emidio Tidu writes in an email
“The bread is also made in-house as well as the pizza dough—that I do not share the recipe with anyone!”
found inspiration from his extensive European travels and “wanted to bring all of his favorite things in one restaurant,” Tidu writes
The result is quite an extensive menu that
is actually a tailored and paired down version of Avagyan’s first draft
Palma boasts a large outdoor patio dotted with electric fire pits
a 12-seat raw bar and an intimate cocktail bar
The main dining room offers plush velvet booths and tabletops for a comfortable meal
The wine cellar was built by the owner Aram Avagyan
While the decor feels a bit dated and could use a healthy dose of editing (think over-accessorized and bedazzled rather than elegantly curated)
the range of seating options in this nearly 7,000 square foot space make it appealing for a variety of dining experiences
is the striking wine cellar in the center of the restaurant that was personally built by Avagyan himself
Palma requires 48 hours advanced notice to order their whole suckling pig
I was initially skeptical of the flashy decor and expansive menu (there’s literally a whole suckling pig on the menu that requires 48 hours advanced notice!)
such over-the-top touches signal a focus on style over substance when it comes to delivering high-quality food
I stood corrected upon tasting my first dish: escargot in garlic and herb butter with house-made focaccia
and this dish served just the right amount
While soaking up the garlicky sauce with the focaccia (I needed every last morsel)
the Beverage Director Rafael Tadevosyan came to my table to help me decide on some cocktails
but still keeping its roots,” Tadevosyan explained as we went through the book
Garlic lovers will love this escargot in an herb garlic butter
We decided on the French Golden Negroni: Brad Pitt’s The Gardener French gin
and Hibiscus Sour: botanical-forward Fords lemon dry gin
lemon and vegan foam made from Fee Brothers Fee Foam
The Hibiscus Sour was my personal favorite—not to sweet
Next up was a round of oysters—fresh and flavorful
with a classic tangy and bright mignonette that wasn’t overly fussy or produced
I decided on the 10 oz Margaret River Wagyu Denver that was was seasoned well
cooked to a classic medium rare that let the meat shine
The side of lobster gnocchi was a sweet and creamy compliment
and although I had absolutely no room left
I managed to choke down a house-made cannoli and imported Italian pistachio gelato from their bakery and gelato bar for dessert
I was left feeling not only catatonically stuffed
but impressed that a restaurant with such an ambitious and diverse menu managed to deliver consistently delicious food across the board

“The De Palma Decade” is a thoroughly enjoyable portrait of director Brian De Palma
the counterculture master of the scream scene
The De Palma Decade: Redefining Cinema with Doubles, Voyeurs, and Psychic Teens by Laurent Bouzereau
Variety critic Owen Gleiberman made his decades-long dismay with the career of filmmaker Brian De Palma crystal clear: “…when it came to the art heroes who let me down
no one threw me for a loop — and could keep throwing me — quite like Brian De Palma
I wrestled for years with the disappointment his movies provoked in me (though I do think a small handful of them
Elaborately clever meta-Hitchcock jungle gyms of pure escapism.”
six years later it looks as if Brian De Palma is back on top of the jungle gym
at least when it comes to critical appreciation
three books have come out honoring the 83 year-old director’s life and work; Glenn Kenny’s entertaining The World is Yours: The Story of Scarface; De Palma on De Palma: Conversations with Samuel Blumenfeld and Laurent Vachaud; and The De Palma Decade by award-winning filmmaker/producer Laurent Bouzereau
Bouzereau’s study focuses on De Palma’s films (he sticks to the director’s high period
from 1973’s Sisters to 1981’s Blow Out)
But this cinematic love letter contains more than in-depth commentary: there’s biography
contribution to the effort to consolidate De Palma’s auteur status
to evaluate De Palma’s reputation as one of America’s most important
Bouzereau wrote a previous book on the filmmaker
so he knew he had to bring something fresh to the table
There are new interviews with the director and his collaborators
The interviewees offer considerable insight into De Palma’s execution of action
from the prom scene in Carrie to the use of split screen in Sisters and the climatic Steadicam chase in 1993’s Carlito’s Way
a retread of the information in Noah Baumbach and Jake Paltrow’s addictive 2016 documentary
the home of De Palma disciples Ari Aster (Hereditary
Beau is Afraid) and Ti West (The MaXXXine trilogy)
Bouzereau ventures into uncharted territory that should please die-hard cineastes
and Get to Know Your Rabbit haven’t received the same scalpel-sharp analysis given to the director’s other early films
And the chapter on Phantom of the Paradise
particularly Williams’ recollection of writing his song “Old Souls” is moving
(Note: there’s a delightful story in the book about Orson Welles trying to get his film The Other Side of the Wind up and running.)
This is a deeply personal reflection on the films of a director he places in a higher slot in the pantheon than Alfred Hitchcock
the oral history and analysis here tends to excessively soft on De Palma’s failures
Cliff Robertson’s “aw shucks” take on shooting Obsession contentedly stays at the level of the actor’s tan and ego while Spacek and Fisk are tender (and perceptive) about their working and personal relationship on Carrie
As for De Palma’s ultimate standing among the gods of cinema
put me down as a skeptic regarding some of his films
1984’s Body Double wasn’t so much a thriller as a comedic pastiche on porn chic Los Angeles while 2006’s The Black Dahlia was a very frustrating product — it is a muddled adaptation of James Ellroy’s novel
its narrative undercut by flaccid dramatic tension
if you approach the book’s hyperbole with caution
The De Palma Decade has the merits of Bouzereau’s documentaries Five Came Back and Faye: it is a thoroughly enjoyable portrait of a counterculture master of the scream scene
I couldn’t help but utter one of De Palma’s customary exclamations
