Third-year law student Ricardo Parada’s experience working on complex legal issues at the University of California Office of the President helped to support the outcomes of researchers and scientists across the country
3L student Ricardo Parada discusses his experiences working with the University of California Office of the President (UCOP), which oversees a system of 10 campuses, five medical centers and three affiliated national laboratories. UC Law SF’s Corporate Counsel Externship Program places students in top legal departments
What did you do in the Corporate Counsel Externship Program and why is this work important
I worked as an in-house extern with UC Legal
in the University of California’s Office of the President
I had the opportunity to conduct research and write memoranda on complex and novel areas of law
I collaborated with campus counsel at one of UC’s campuses on several matters
providing guidance regarding internal UC policy and federal regulations
UC Legal and its attorneys are constantly working on complex issues at the cutting edge of the law
I learned that the work being done by in-house government attorneys is very similar to that of in-house corporate counsel at large companies
UC is one of the largest employers in the state through its campuses
It’s special because it helps to ensure that researchers and scientists at one of the leading research institutions in the country can continue their important work
How does this experience support your career goals
I came to UC Law SF with the explicit goal of making the most out of attending school in such a diverse and prestigious legal community
This experience gave me the rare opportunity to gain early exposure to working in-house with a legal department
it allowed me to contribute to making a positive impact in my community
It also heightened my interest and enthusiasm in pursuing a career in government law
Would you recommend UC Law SF and this program
Professors Geevargis and Darling provided valuable insight and guidance that helped me excel in my placement
UC Law SF is unique in providing this experience
especially considering its strategic location in such a robust and critical legal market
I appreciated the opportunity to pursue a placement with a nonprofit and governmental organization
and I hope that future students can continue to gain such valuable experience while making a positive impact on the local community and California more broadly
What’s your favorite UC Law SF memory so far
I learned that one of my undergraduate professors at Occidental College would be teaching at UC Law SF
I’m interested in pursuing a social justice-oriented career and had taken a course called Rebellious Lawyering with Thalia González
so I was excited to take her courses at UC Law SF
The Evidence of Success series highlights UC Law SF students as they share how the college’s opportunities equip them with the experience
and confidence to excel in the legal profession

The Scottsdale Parada del Sol Historic Parade travels from Drinkwater Boulevard along Scottsdale Road to Brown Avenue and Indian School Road
transforming Scottsdale’s Old Town Historic District into a vibrant Western-style street party for the Trail’s End Festival
Both the Parada del Sol Parade and the Trail's End Festival are hosted by the Scottsdale Charros
The event is a celebration of all things "Wild West" from historic reenactments to country tunes to Indigenous crafts and performances
The event draws a diverse crowd every year — and this year was no exception — with many donning the classic cowboy hats and boots
Visitors filled the sidewalks and blocked-off streets
immersing themselves in the rich history on display
Iconic bars like the Rusty Spur and Old Town Tavern seamlessly blended into the scene
buzzing with cowboy-clad revelers embracing the Western spirit

The organization is a non-political nonprofit that boasts members with direct lineage to someone who fought in or supported the American Revolution
"Our goal is to keep the founding principles of the country alive and relevant," Siefert said
Rick Spargo, state president of the Sons of the American Revolution Arizona Chapter
said the organization does this by performing skits
and offering scholarships to local students

As the crowd smiled, reminiscing, DeCastro reflected on his deep-rooted love for local music, tracing it back to a concert he attended at age 7 to see J. David Sloan at Mr. Lucky's.

11 overall to the Mets in the 2022 MLB Draft
coming off a strong career at Georgia Tech
He entered 2023 ranked as MLB Pipeline's No
36 prospect in baseball – third-highest among catchers
The past few years haven't gone particularly well for the 23-year-old backstop
and his future in the big leagues is suddenly in question
Parada seems cognizant of that as he arrives at spring training camp as a non-roster invitee
undergoing a major physical change in an attempt to get things back on track
According to MLB.com's Anthony DiComo
He did so by largely cutting out sweets and snacks from his diet
all while continuing to ramp up his strength workouts
One could even say – in line with the annual preseason cliche – that Parada is in the best shape of his life
54 RBIs and a .751 OPS across 105 games going from Single-A to High-A to Double-A in 2023
Even with Alvarez graduating to the majors
two other Mets catching prospects rank above Parada at this point – Daiverson Gutierrez and Ronald Hernandez – while Yovanny Rodriguez is only two spots behind
If Parada's new physique doesn't compromise his power at the plate
instead helping him become more athletic behind it
then he could see his MLB debut in short order
A full spring training camp lies ahead for the Mets staff to analyze the new-look youngster
making the new five weeks critical to his future in the organization

Mets top 30 prospects for 2025 season
Posted by Elliot Teichman | Feb 25
Parada was one of the key prospects in the Mets system
He was ranked as a top-100 prospect in baseball by Baseball America (#50)
MLB.com (#36) and Baseball Prospectus (#64)
right after getting drafted by the Mets in 2022 he went on to hit .275/.455.425 (.880 OPS) over 60 games
The last couple of seasons though things haven’t been as good for Parada
he slashed .248/.324/.428 (.751) over three levels
but a paltry .185/.250/.389 (.639 OPS) in 14 games with Binghamton
hitting .214/.304/.359 (.663) in a full season with Binghamton
Parada hasn’t hit and turned in extremely poor defense at the catcher position
He’s had—wait for this—226 steals against him while catching in 232 games
He’s caught just 57 runners at a 19.7 caught stealing percentage
but Parada is giving up a stolen base every game
as he should be separated by at least one minor league level from the aforementioned names
This spring he’s competing against Hayden Senger who has been in the Mets system since 2018
and Chris Williams who was in the Twins system since 2019 (and never made the majors)
there is Jakson Reetz who has major league experience
It’s cliche to say that players come to the camp in the best shape of their lives, but Kevin Parada made some major changes over the off-season, leading to him dropping 15 pounds
Here’s what we are looking for this spring for Parada:

the ladies took center stage with the two highest money winners happening in the ladies events
The ever growing event of breakaway roping provided the largest paycheck with Bailey Girvin earning $3,230 for her smoking 2.1-second run
Walking away from the rodeo with the second largest paycheck was Hayle Gibson in the barrel racing
She came out on top and earned a $2,600 check for her 17.19 second run
This event was incredibly tough from start to finish
The top 12 competitors earned a check with just a little over three tenths of a second separating them all
Team roping also had a lot of entries which means the payout was higher than some of the other events
Competitors had to be under five seconds to get a check and it was the team of Kavis Drake and Denim Ross who took home the win with a 4.1-second run which was good for $2,482 each

was lauded at the time of selection as one of the best hitters in the class but with some defensive questions
Even if his glove never caught up to his advanced bat
the thoughts were that his offense would push him to the majors all by itself
Entering his third season after the selection
the questions are louder than ever and have spread to the other side of the ball
Despite the young catcher purchasing a Florida home so he can work through the winters with team personnel
the young backstop continues to struggle on defense
The running game was a particular weakness early in his professional career
with Parada seeing the 10th-most stolen base attempts against him in 2023 despite playing only 59 games behind the plate that season
In 73 games at catcher for Double-A Binghamton last year
Parada caught only 23% of attempted base stealers
That number represented a significant improvement from 2023's 18%
but came with a corresponding increase in passed balls from seven to 15

could potentially help him improve behind the plate with blocking and agility

the extra time spent on getting his defense to be even playable has hampered the once-carrying tool of his bat
Parada's career minor league slash line across three seasons is .233/.322/.395 with 28 home runs in 233 games
including a .214 average and .663 OPS for Binghamton last season
The catcher has always had an unconventional swing
one that was seen as a possible hinderance to instruction were he to struggle
One thing that still make 0 sense to me is how Kevin Parada became so bad
they need to give up on him as a catcher and make him focus on the bat
with a 35.7% whiff rate in the strike zone
Among all hitters with 400 or more plate appearances in the minors
that was the second-worst rate in all of baseball
He especially struggled with both velocity and spin away
although his issues seem to be limited to missing those pitches in the zone rather than chasing an excessive amount
To his credit, Parada is handling the snubs in stride, telling the New York Post that it wasn't a bad thing for him to struggle last season
that’s always frustrating,” Parada told The Post
“I think it was good for my development as a player to struggle a little bit right there
being able to learn a little bit more about myself
I’m lucky enough to get another opportunity
doing my best to take full advantage of it.”
Only time and at-bats will tell if Parada can use the time out of the spotlight to right what ails him

La Cultural Week of Flamenco Activities in Paradas It is an event for the fans. It starts off April by showing off the stage of José Antonio Brenes, always on the ball. This year's is a beautiful allegory of red carnations and wicker chairs that welcomes like a mother's embrace the artists who tread the woodwork. The Regional, headquarters of this peña of the righteous, that of Miguel Vargas, full of good flamenco and better people.
"She's a sweet little girl who stands out in her generation for being delicate and very elegant, without sacrificing technique and dance mastery. Especially in the movements of her torso and hips, her stylish and distinguished arm movements, and her gestures always appropriate to what is being sung, played, and danced."
At the end of the party he made his friend come up Ricardo for the little kick. Joni was on the ball, Fali did the same, and even Juanelo, who doesn't usually get involved in these things, couldn't resist Lucía's call, the elegance of a little candy.
Lucía Benavides is already a fine dancer, despite her insulting youth and the fact that she still has a long way to go. Her poise and semblance play into her favor. She is a sweet little girl who stands out in her generation for being delicate and very elegant, without sacrificing technique and dance mastery. Especially in her torso and hip movements, her stylish and distinguished arm movements, and her gestures always appropriate to what is being sung, played, and danced.
He said goodbye by introducing the cast, thanking the peña the opportunity and brought the person responsible for the scenery up on stage to applaud the genius of his work. Lucía shone in Paradas.

Kevin Parada’s Struggles in the Minor Leagues
the 11th overall pick in the 2022 MLB Draft by the New York Mets
is facing significant challenges as he navigates his minor league career
Despite being hailed as one of the top hitters in his draft class
Parada’s defensive capabilities have come under intense scrutiny
leading to his exclusion from MLB Pipeline’s updated Top 30 prospect rankings
Parada was known for his exceptional batting skills but had lingering concerns about his defense
While his offensive prowess was expected to propel him to the majors
his defensive struggles have raised doubts about his overall potential
Particularly troubling is Parada’s difficulty in handling the running game
with a high number of stolen base attempts against him and a relatively low success rate in catching base stealers
Despite Parada’s efforts to improve his defensive skills
including purchasing a home in Florida to work with team personnel during the offseason
his performance behind the plate has been inconsistent
and agility are areas that still require refinement
with his defensive shortcomings overshadowing his once-promising bat
Parada’s minor league statistics reflect his struggles
with a career slash line of .233/.322/.395 and a noticeable decline in performance in recent seasons
has now become a potential obstacle to his development
has contributed to his plummeting prospect status
with Baseball America ranking him as the 27th prospect in the Mets’ system
Parada remains optimistic about his future in professional baseball
He acknowledges the value of facing adversity and sees it as an opportunity for personal growth and development
Parada’s resilience and determination to overcome his struggles will be crucial as he works towards reclaiming his status as a top prospect in the Mets’ organization
As Parada continues his journey in the minor leagues
but the opportunity for redemption still remains
His ability to learn from past experiences
and showcase his potential at the plate will ultimately determine his future in the world of professional baseball
Only time and perseverance will reveal whether Kevin Parada can rise above his current challenges and fulfill his promise as a standout player in the Mets’ organization

The Georgia Tech product made a nice first impression with a .880 OPS throughout his first 13 games in ‘22
The New York Mets drafted Kevin Parada 11th overall in the 2022 draft. Parada was considered one of the best draft prospects at the time. Both MLB Pipeline and Baseball America ranked Parada as the sixth-best draft prospect
Parada then entered 2023 as a consensus top 50 prospect
But he turned in a solid but unspectacular .248/.324/.428 triple-slash
Parada hit for some power with a .179 isolated slugging percentage and 14 homers in 457 plate appearances
But he only walked at a 7.9% rate with a poor 27.6% strikeout rate
But Parada is coming off a worryingly bad campaign
the former first-rounder batted a meager .213/.304/.359 with a .307 wOBA and 93 wRC+
Parada may have upped his walk rate to 9.9%
but he struck out over a third of the time with a 33.6% K%
His power output also declined from last season
Parada never projected as a Gold Glove-caliber backstop
but he allowed 15 passed balls in just 600 innings of work behind the dish
Pipeline and BA both grade his arm out at a 40 on the 20-80 scale
Parada also struggled with framing pitches
But as Parada has been floundering in the minor leagues
Francisco Alvarez has proven himself to be this team’s long-term catcher
Alvarez is batting .222/.294/.422 with a .310 wOBA
Alvarez has delivered on his plus power potential with 36 dingers in 765 plate appearances and a .200 isolated slugging percentage
Alvarez has also been a great defender with +6 defensive runs saved
and the 16th-best poptime among qualified catchers
If the Mets try to trade Parada this off-season
they probably won’t get much beyond a low-level flier
The only possible way the Mets get anything of value out of Parada is if he is included in a larger trade where two or even three other Mets players are involved
it may be better for the Mets to see if he can even figure things out

Disclaimer: All prospects rankings were made in the preseason and have not been adjusted for play in 2024
It has been an extremely rough go of it for a player who was once regarded as the New York Mets’ top prospect. Steadily, since his debut in the system back in 2022, catcher/designated hitter Kevin Parada has continued to fall on extremely tough times
The moment he got drafted it was projected that his defense would need to come a long way
and so much so that catcher was likely not his position of the future
which is extremely troublesome given that was the main reason why he was drafted 11th overall
The New York Mets originally selected the California-native with their first of two first-round picks during the 2022 MLB Amateur Draft. Before the draft, Parada was a consensus, fringe top-five pick (Keith Law, MLB.com
and ESPN all rated him inside the top seven)
Photos by Bronson Harris of Binghamton Rumble Ponies
As a result of his terrific collegiate career
he was drafted 11th overall by the Mets in what several deemed a “steal” at the time
He then finished the season split between the Florida Complex League and in Low-A ball with the St
He performed well in an extremely small sample size
He struck out only one more time than he walked and ended up winning the league title with St
in his first full professional season with the Mets
Parada spent a majority of his time with two different teams within the system
where he mustered a respectable .787 OPS across 340 at-bats
Parada slugged 11 home runs and totaled 36 extra-base hits to go along with 42 RBIs
this is where his strikeout problem started rearing its ugly head
Parada posted an above-average 25.1% strikeout rate and walked a below-average 7.9% of the time
Parada was then called up to Double-A Binghamton toward the end of the season
where he struggled mightily across 60 at-bats
He hit a woeful .185 and posted a meager .639 OPS
Parada struck out an extremely troublesome 38.3% of the time and owned a walk rate below 7.0%
His wRC+ dropped from 115 in High-A in 2023 to only 70
Parada allowed a staggering 129 stolen bases across only 72 games
posting a caught stealing rate of only 18% (for comparison’s sake
the MLB average caught stealing rate is 31%)
Those defensive issues carried into the Arizona Fall League (AFL) and followed him into this season with Double-A Binghamton
he allowed 36 stolen bases while only throwing out five runners (12% caught stealing rate)
throwing out only three (13% caught stealing rate)
controlling the run game is not the only job of a catcher
Every indication points to the projections pre-draft that the catcher position is not feasible for Parada as his career goes on
He already started seven of his 22 games played this season in the designated hitter spot
he has not started at any other position during his tenure in the Mets’ organization
the bat has been once again very troubling for Parada in 2024
His .536 OPS is on track to be the lowest of his career and his strikeout rate is still elevated at 31.2%
as evident by the .256 slugging percentage and an isolated power (ISO) of only .090
This mark is not only way off the general .140 average but much lower than his .116 career mark
Parada started the season with Double-A Binghamton and projects to be there until he can figure it out
it is imperative that the once thought of “steal” of the draft starts to come around
His current form for Binghamton is pretty off his
career averages across his young professional career
If he wants to be considered a legit top-10 prospect in a strong Mets system
getting the strikeout rate down is a must which should help him increase his overall play
One potential sign of hope is his walk rate to begin 2024 is closer to where it was when he first began his professional career (11.8%)
he can parlay the better pitch selection into better production
Iif these rankings were done now (all rankings were created during the preseason)
Parada would find himself comfortably outside the top 10
the former top prospect finds a way to start developing like many thought he would

Your luxurious yet inclusive brand would never do that
It would be a shame if #BoycottPrada trended.”

Camilo Humberto Parada-Rojas
received a $10,000 Storkan-Hanes-McCaslin Foundation Award
given annually to an outstanding graduate student working with soilborne diseases
Parada is studying genes that could provide resistance to sweetpotato diseases, including the pathogen that causes black rot in sweetpotato. He works in the lab of mentor Lina Quesada-Ocampo
a vegetable pathology extension specialist and an associate professor in the Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology
“I’m interested in how we can make the plants more resilient,” Parada says
Lina is a great extension professor who works a lot with growers
and that means having multiple chances to interact with farmers and communicate our research.”
Parada was honored at the American Phytopathological Society meeting in early August
can be used for any purpose that will benefit the graduate student’s education
“What this award means to me is that I will be able to help my brother in Colombia, who has medical bills from contracting COVID-19,” Parada says. Parada, who is from Colombia, was among the first cohort of graduate students accepted into the Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research (FFAR) Fellows Program

It was a line-drive hit … that carried 450 feet
It was a smash so threatening that Mercer pitcher Ryan Lobus spun around and jumped as if the ball would hit under his spikes
the blast by Georgia Tech catcher Kevin Parada on March 8 spanked a scoreboard speaker for a home run
Parada has slugged 23 dingers – many of them to center and right-center
which leaves pitchers frustrated if not fearful and flummoxed
“I had to face him many times in the preseason
and it’s daunting,” Georgia Tech pitcher Zach Maxwell said
“His plate coverage is so good – there’s nowhere you can go with the ball that he wouldn’t at least foul it off.”
Although Parada’s offense is ahead of his defense
his power bat at a premium position has made him a consensus top-seven-player pick among various 2022 MLB mock drafts
was briefly ineligible for this year’s draft
When MLB owners and the players union agreed to a new collective bargaining agreement in March
the cutoff for players turning 21 to be eligible for that year’s draft was August 1
I was feeling really good that we may get this guy back next year,” Georgia Tech coach Danny Hall said of Parada
I will be happy for him when he gets drafted.”
Parada is a Southern California native – Pasadena to be precise – and he grew up rooting for the Angels
He is the first scholarship athlete in his family
played high school softball (and not in college as reported elsewhere)
Parada understands Spanish better than he can speak the language
although he has Hispanic ancestry on his father’s side
Former Yellow Jackets catcher Mike Nickeas
who went back to school at Georgia Tech after his four-year major-league career ended in 2015
Parada quickly fell in love with everything Georgia Tech had to offer
essentially removing himself from the 2019 draft
But it wasn’t until he arrived in Atlanta for enrollment that he fully understood his new school’s history
“Joey Bart was still playing here when I committed
but I didn’t know the depth of how important Georgia Tech was in developing a lot of catchers,” Parada said
“Coach Hall has always talked about how important catchers are to his program
but it wasn’t until I got here that I started to understand the lineage.”
since Hall arrived at Tech for the 1994 season
the Yellow Jackets have had never gone more than two straight years without having a catcher drafted
A total of 10 ex-Georgia Tech catchers have been drafted in the top 10 rounds
Here’s the list of Georgia Tech’s drafted catchers since 1994:
Tyler Stevenson and Harry Ford -- could’ve joined this list
Georgia Tech signees opted to go pro out of high school
Barnhart signed with the Reds in 2010 after getting drafted in the 10th round
The Reds foiled Georgia Tech again in 2015
signing first-rounder Stevenson; and the Mariners signed first-rounder Ford last year
215-pound prep senior from Maryland – is Georgia Tech’s next star catcher
“Lamar is having a tremendous high school season
and there’s a lot of heat rolling in on him,” Hall said
“We are starting to sweat (that he may sign a pro contract out of high school)
“A cross-checker I know told his area scout
His 20 doubles led the ACC through the NCAA regionals
after a winter spent mostly in the weight room with Georgia Tech player-development coach
Parada has turned those two-baggers into leisurely strolls around the bases
He estimates he gained 15 pounds due to his weight-training regimen
“I hit a lot of balls off the top of the wall last year,” said Parada
who has a 3.55 grade-point average and is majoring in Business with a focus on Marketing
which Parada – asked to define it – calls “interesting.”
“I tried to put my body in the most athletic position possible,” Parada said
“I know that visually it’s not the appealing (stance) for everyone
but it’s the most comfortable position for my body
going 7-for-8 on steals while also legging out a triple against Florida State
He is also close to breaking the school record for homers – he trails only Anthony Maisano (25) and Mark Fisher (24)
Parada has played all 49 games for Georgia Tech (28-21)
Parada wears glasses – they have become part of his brand
he said – and he clearly sees the ball well
It’s his defense that pales in comparison to his prowess at the plate
After throwing out just 7-for-59 runners attempting to steal last year
Parada went through an offseason throwing program that continues to this day
who said his catcher’s defense was an issue
“I can throw him a tough slider in the dirt,” Maxwell said
“and I have full confidence he will corral it.”
Parada doesn’t run from questions about his supposed weakness
“My defense has always been my downfall in the game,” he said
“I’m always going to have to continue to work twice as hard to get as good as I am at hitting
But I think I’ve really improved the past couple of years
especially at Georgia Tech with guys who throw mid/upper 90s
That’s helped me get better at receiving.”
Another big moment for Parada came this past summer
when he worked with veteran coach Jerry Weinstein of USA Baseball
Weinstein taught Parada to catch from one knee
“A lot of people had talked to me about (one-knee catching)
but I never understood the ins and outs of it (until this past summer),” Parada said
“Jerry helped break it down and explain why I should do it
and it’s helped me drastically with receiving
“It just frees your body up to be able to catch more consistently without having the restrictions you would have with a normal squat
especially when guys are throwing as hard as they are with as much movement
It gives you more freedom with the glove.”
