one thing above all else is clear: if you ever need a baseball cap
jersey or a T-shirt for one of the six teams in La Liga de Béisbol Profesional de la República Dominicana
the Dominican winter baseball league (or LIDOM
whether you’re a diehard fan born and raised in the Dominican Republic
part of the Dominican-American diaspora in the United States
married into a Dominican family or just a collector who can never have enough baseball caps
a display window greets customers with two mannequins decked out in the full uniforms of Dominican baseball titans Águilas and Licey
the island nation’s two most popular teams and LIDOM’s most intense rivalry
A clash of blue and gold with a wealth of titles between the two
having won back-to-back titles in 2023 and 2024 and has (for now) surpassed Águilas for most in LIDOM history with 24 to Águilas’s 22.
The mannequins speak without saying a word
arrived in Washington Heights from his hometown of La Vega
bringing with him his love of Dominican winter baseball
a semi-prelude to Peligro Sports called Peligro Sandwiches
The top draw was the “chimi,” a toasted Dominican specialty
but there were also arcade games to be played and baseball cards to be bought and traded
A local high school baseball star and fellow Dominican named Manny Ramirez was a regular customer and now a long-time friend of Mateo’s (a signed and framed Ramirez jersey hangs in his office)
When the record shop next to Mateo’s sandwich business went up for sale
he bought it with the intent of turning it into a sporting goods store
Mateo remembers the pre-internet days of the early ‘90s when Dominicans in New York had to go to extremes for LIDOM game recaps and box scores
Some would wait for days after a game until Dominican newspapers were delivered to New York
would purchase phone cards to make long-distance calls to relatives in the Dominican Republic who could give them live updates of games over the phone.
Passion for LIDOM baseball in New York was undeniable both then and now
giving Peligro an ongoing purpose in Washington Heights’ vibrant Dominican community.
“(Peligro Sports) happened with a little bit of business vision,” Mateo said in Spanish
“I saw (Dominican fans in New York) had needs for (LIDOM) products because no one else had them anywhere
and the Dominican community (in Washington Heights) was growing
People would ask where they could get this (hat) and that (T-shirt)
More than just me being a fan of Dominican baseball
I realized as much as I like (LIDOM merchandise) other people can like it too.”
Mateo is a LIDOM encyclopedia for anyone who enters Peligro Sports with questions on the league’s merchandise
And not just because LIDOM is also a family affair for him
the last team to win a LIDOM title before Licey’s current reign.
Mateo points out that LIDOM’s baseball cap situation is unique
If you want to wear the same caps that the players wear on the field (a common desire for any baseball fan)
the official maker of every MLB team’s caps
is the current manufacturer for four of LIDOM’s six teams: Gigantes
could be seen in previous LIDOM seasons wearing an Estrellas uniform alongside his father
Another former Cardinal and Puerto Rico World Baseball Classic team manager Yadier Molina (recently named LIDOM manager of the year by the Santo Domingo Sportswriters Association)
now wears the black and yellow cap of Águilas
That star power combined with New Era’s brand recognition as the official cap of the grandes ligas is a powerful combination for fans when considering a purchase
“What people like most are the New Era caps,” Mateo said
Licey and Escogido have their hats manufactured by a Dominican company called 4Fans
and with Licey winning consecutive championships and Escogido managed by Albert Pujols that local brand is getting a boost
(LIDOM) fans are still going to get it,” Mateo said
“There was a time when every team (in LIDOM) used New Era for their caps
sometimes sports teams (in the Dominican Republic) change the companies that make their uniforms
Escogido and Licey haven’t used New Era for years
but I feel they’ll return to New Era soon.”
Keeping up with the business logistics of LIDOM’s cap manufacturing can be a complicated dance at times
Sometimes Mateo has ordered directly from LIDOM
4Fans being in the mix means he’ll always have to make more than one call if he wants every LIDOM cap in stock at Peligro Sports.
Ordering LIDOM jerseys is similarly complex
Mexican company Arrieta makes the jerseys for Estrellas
Escogido’s jerseys are manufactured by Wilson
Licey has jerseys manufactured by Wilson and Arrieta
Mateo hasn’t bothered trying to sell Toros jerseys because the team doesn’t have much of a following in New York
The most popular LIDOM jerseys at Peligro Sports
Which Mateo attributes to the team’s history of success and many of Washington Heights’ Dominican residents hailing from El Cibao
Mateo could see many of the Soto fans who bought Yankee caps at Peligro Sports when Soto was traded to the Bronx returning for Soto Licey jerseys
given his popularity in New York’s Dominican community
Mateo said many of the Soto fans who bought Yankee caps have already returned to purchase Mets caps
Peligro Sports allows its customers to personalize purchased jerseys with names and numbers on the back
although Mateo points out that no LIDOM team puts player last names on the back of its jerseys (that’s prime real estate for advertising)
If a customer wanted a Licey jersey with “Soto” on the back they could request it for as simple a reason as their own last name being Soto
But Mateo is holding off on proactively making any Juan Soto merchandise for now
Soto might play five or 10 games (for Licey),” Mateo said
“Out of respect I won’t make a Soto jersey until a deal is done
I don’t want to break the good relationships I’ve built with LIDOM
(A Soto Licey jersey) would be a great impact for the league and for me as a businessman
Many (superstar) Dominican players play in LIDOM when their careers are coming to an end
It would be incredible if it could happen.”

— Tigres del Licey (@TigresdelLicey) January 8, 2025
Mateo has been in Washington Heights for over three decades and selling LIDOM merchandise more than half of that time
From the titans to the contenders and pretenders
he says LIDOM continues to be good business for him because of the passion he believes the Dominican Republic will always have for baseball and the pride those baseball fans share in their nation
“It’s a way to identify where you’re from,” Mateo said
love to say ‘I’m Dominican,’ ‘I’m Puerto Rican.’ Each person wants to represent their country
The Dominican league is so strong in popularity
People want to show where they’re from and where their allegiances are.”

Peligro died from head trauma resulting from an accidental fall at his home in Los Angeles
A renowned drummer for rock bands the Dead Kennedys and the Red Hot Chili Peppers has died after an accidental fall at his home
The Dead Kennedys announced Peligro’s death in an Instagram post on Saturday
Peligro had died from head trauma resulting from a fall at his home in Los Angeles
which cited information provided by police
Details on funeral arrangements for Peligro were pending as of Monday
but the band said they would be announced in the coming days
Peligro had been a staple in the bustling San Francisco and Los Angeles music communities since 1978. He drummed for the Dead Kennedys from 1981 until the legendary punk outfit broke up in 1986 and then again after it reformed in 2001. He also spent some time on the kit for the Red Hot Chili Peppers
for whom he sang and played guitar on three albums
Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea was among those to mourn the unexpected death of Peligro on social media
“My dear friend, my brother I miss you so much,” Flea posted on Instagram
but all my life I will treasure every second.”
Flea recalled seeing Peligro first perform in 1981
and a crucial part of [Red Hot Chili Peppers] history,” Flea’s post added
the Alice in Chains guitarist William DuVall went on Twitter to share his memory of Peligro diving over his drum kit and into the crowd “in a single leap” at the end of a Dead Kennedys gig in 1983
“Drum hero,” DuVall’s tribute tweet said
migrants and refugees worldwide routinely find themselves in great danger
Perhaps the most hazardous migrant trail of all is the Darien Gap
lawless stretch straddling Colombia and Panama
special correspondent Nadja Drost and videographer Bruno Federico reported from this perilous path
Notice: Transcripts are machine and human generated and lightly edited for accuracy
Life around the globe for refugees and migrants fleeing war
climate change and economic misfortune routinely find themselves in great peril along migrant trails
lawless stretch that straddles Colombia and Panama
and with the support of the Pulitzer Center
correspondent Nadja Drost and videographer Bruno Federico put themselves at great risk to bring us stories of people risking everything to make their ways north toward the U.S
And a warning: The images and accounts in this report may disturb some viewers
Where South America meets Central America lies one of the world's wildest jungles
migrants from around the world risk death crossing the jungle
and no instructions on how to make it through one of the world's most dangerous migration routes
I would like to send a message to anyone who is thinking of doing this route
Many migrants spend a week or even two on this trail before they reach a village and safety
the Middle East and Africa flew into Ecuador or Brazil
Haitians also use this route as a springboard north
It's the only missing 66-mile break in the Pan-American Highway from the tip of Argentina up to Alaska
Migrants go first to the end of the road in Colombia
now a trailhead for migrants headed into the Darien
We set out to join up with the migrant trail
and reached a makeshift camp where smugglers wait for migrants
a group of Cameroonians and Pakistanis arrived
and relieved to find the last spot on the trail where they can get hot food
The Darien is one of the wettest places on the planet
The environment could hardly be more different from the high mountains of Pakistan this group of friends call home
The Taliban targeted our family from time to time
followed the migrants as they set out on a daylong ascent of a mountain ahead
The steep and slippery terrain was tough for everyone
the smuggler the Cameroonians and Pakistanis hired demanded payment
young men carrying square backpacks filled with bricks of cocaine passed us
We were told to expect their heavily armed security patrolling
Smugglers won't venture any farther into Panama
where they could face over a decade in prison if they're caught
so they could help migrants safely complete their journey
I have had to see mothers who tell their children they can't go on to give themselves up to God
who had been injured and spent two weeks on this mountainside
He was one of many Cameroonians on this trail who didn't want to be identified by name
The trail and riverbanks were littered with signs of desperation
a large group of Haitians and Sri Lankans appeared
It's been six days that we're walking without stopping
There was nothing else for them to do but try to go ahead
These Haitians had been living legally in Brazil or Chile
Among them were six children and three pregnant women
and the Haitians made camp high above the river
It was hard to find wood dry enough to make a fire and even harder to find food to cook
Lying smugglers often tell migrants they're almost to their destination
had already tossed their clothing and food
The rivers often pull children from their parents' arms and sweep migrants to their death
we were joined by 15 Bangladeshi men with nothing but the clothes they were wearing
They had been robbed four times on the trail of everything
A group of five to seven mafias came to us
They pointed a gun towards us and took away our bags and everything
eight migrants from Haiti and Ghana who began the crossing with the Haitians
a woman and her boyfriend from Haiti were robbed by bandits days earlier
Charlie Pierre from Haiti helped tell us what happened
and leave the woman behind." And so he's walking
and sees these guys lowering his wife's underwear
penetrating her intimate parts with his fingers
looking for dollar bills they suspect migrants of hiding
we heard many stories of this and other abuse on the trail
Pierre found a pregnant Haitian woman he had been searching for
Rosina Boateng's family from Ghana had run out of food
and dimming all hopes of reaching a settlement in Panama by night
minds were racing with one question: Will we make it out of here
There were foreboding reminders of those who did not
But these migrants joined the legions of survivors crossing the Darien Gap
the group made its way out of the Darien Gap
but the rest of their journey is as opaque as the black waters ahead
Nadja will report on the uneasy waiting game in Panama for the migrants who make it through the Darien Gap

As the decades-long tradition of “Shark Week” approaches
you can expect once again to hear of “serial killer” sharks
But, as you probably also know, shark attacks are incredibly unlikely. You’re 75 times more likely to be killed by lightning than by a shark
one person dies of a shark attack every other year in the United States
But just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water … just kidding
But swimmers face real risks that are of a much less telegenic variety
seven things swimmers should actually be afraid of — and how to avoid them
Outbreaks of this parasite, known as crypto, have doubled over the past couple years
Crypto spreads through the feces of infected animals
including humans — a running theme of this list
It takes just 10 crypto parasites to get sick
and an infected person sheds 10 to 100 million in a single bowel movement
Crypto is the most common infection at recreational water sites like pools and water parks
since the parasite’s tough outer shell makes it resistant to chlorine
Outbreaks are typically small, but, in 1993, over 400,000 people in the Milwaukee area got infected when crypto entered the local water supply — the largest waterborne illness outbreak in U.S
you might be tempted to take a dip in hot water to ward off microbes
boiling water is a common sterilization technique
But the average hot tub is 102 degrees F — not hot enough to kill germs
The bacteria can also infect the ear canal
leading to the painful and itchy “swimmer’s ear” that children often get
making some cases require heavy-duty treatment
Unlike other members of this list, legionella infects your airways and not your gut. Hot tubs — with that warm, steamy air we all just love — are a common place to get infected
Infection leads to one of two illnesses: Legionnaires’ disease or Pontiac fever
Legionnaires’ is a form of pneumonia that tends to affect smokers
and others with weak lungs or immune systems
and leads to a fever and muscle aches that usually subside without treatment
Only 5 percent of those exposed to legionella develop Legionnaire’s
while over 90 percent develop Pontiac fever
Researchers have tried — and failed — to do this for decades
and the feat may lead to a better understanding of how the virus works and how to stop it
Your daily dose of news in health and medicine
These blue-green bacteria thrive during the summer — sometimes to a dangerous extent
Runoff of fertilizers promotes explosive growth of the bacteria
These bacterial blooms can also contain toxins that are harmful on contact
there are no specific treatments for cyanobacteria toxins
but doctors can manage symptoms as a patient recovers
In 2016, over 100 people got sick from a toxic cyanobacteria bloom at Utah Lake during a summer heat wave
outbreaks may become more common; the National Ocean Service reports that harmful blooms are on the rise along the coasts
This parasite is known as the “brain-eating amoeba.” Do we need to say anything more
These amoebas lives in warm bodies of fresh water and infect you when you get contaminated water up your nose
The parasite travels into your brain and triggers a deadly inflammatory response about five days after exposure
The result: an excruciating headache and fever spiral into seizures
This is usually where we’d list effective treatments or describe how long it takes to recover. But over 97 percent of those infected die. Only four people have survived in the past 50 years in the United States, and scientists are still working to develop an effective treatment
Only three to four people get infected each year
This is the one item on this list that’s rarer and deadlier than a shark attack
Research shows that the average adult has 0.14 grams of feces attached to their bottom
carrying a whopping 10 grams — the weight of four pennies
Beaches and swimming pools are not wishing wells
and a quick shower beforehand can help ensure that those “pennies” don’t join you
step out every hour to reapply sunscreen and use the restroom
Be careful not to swallow water — the average adult swallows one tablespoon of water and the average kids swallows 2 1/2
A nose clip can also help keep water from splashing up your nose
Germs are a fact of life — more so than sharks
But there’s no need to let them stop you from enjoying the water this summer

Reporting from the frontiers of health and medicine
The surviving members of the DEAD KENNEDYS have released a statement in response to a report from the Los Angeles medical examiner regarding the death of the band's longtime drummer D.H
According to the report, which was obtained by TMZ and the Los Angeles Times
Peligro — born Darren Henley — died last October due to "combined effects of fentanyl and heroin." The report says he also suffered from non-small cell lung cancer
but the medical examiner's pointing toward the combination of drugs as the official cause
May 3),the DEAD KENNEDYS released the following statement via social media: "DH Peligro had his battles
What [the TMZ and Los Angeles Times] articles leave out is that he was battling cancer and the chemo and radiation treatments did not get it all
"When the police on the scene called [DEAD KENNEDYS guitarist] East Bay Ray [Raymond Pepperell]
they told him it looked liked he died from a fall in the bathroom
and said that's usually caused by a stroke or an accidental trip
Ray told the officer about DH's cancer and his failing health
D.H.'s landlord conducted a welfare check on the drummer and found him unresponsive in the bathroom of his Los Angeles home
Peligro also had a "repeated history of lung cancer," but it was unknown if he was seeking treatment at the time of his death
The news of Peligro passing was shared by the band in a social media post on October 29
DEAD KENNEDYS said that "police on the scene stated that he died from trauma to the head caused by an accidental fall."
"I am heartbroken," East Bay Ray wrote on Instagram
Peligro joined the DEAD KENNEDYS in February 1981
and made his recorded debut with the group on the EP "In God We Trust
Inc." which was released in December of that year
He would go on to record the studio albums "Plastic Surgery Disasters"
"Frankenchrist" and "Bedtime For Democracy"
as well as singles/rarities collection "Give Me Convenience Or Give Me Death"
reunited without former frontman and primary songwriter Jello Biafra following a civil fraud complaint against Biafra
KNOW singer Brandon Cruz would replace Biafra on vocals and they played under the name DK KENNEDYS for a few concerts
but later reverted to DEAD KENNEDYS permanently
The brief hiatus lasted until June 2009 when Peligro rejoined the band
before being fired for drug and alcohol issues
He has released three albums with his band PELIGRO: "Peligro" (released in 1995 on Biafra's Alternative Tentacles record label); "Welcome To America"; and "Sum Of Our Surroundings"
which won "Rock Album Of The Year" at the 2004 American Independent Music Awards
He also recorded a cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze"
In response to the recent LA Times and TMZ articles.DH Peligro had his battles
Posted by Dead Kennedys on Wednesday, May 3, 2023
Peligro (Darren Henley) passed away in his Los Angeles home yesterday
Police on the scene stated that he died from trauma to the head caused by an accidental fall
Arrangements are pending and will be announced in the coming days
We ask that you respect the family’s privacy during this difficult time
Thank you for your thoughts and words of comfort.” Peligro was 63 years old
It was my first introduction to gay people and different-colored hair and mohawks and people just living free
like everyday was Halloween!” He became a fixture of both the San Francisco and Los Angeles music scenes while playing with S.S.I.
most notably for melding his drumming style to blend punk rock
Dead Kennedys formed in June 1978 in San Francisco with singer Jello Biafra, guitarist East Bay Ray, bassist Klaus Flouride, and drummer Bruce “Ted” Slesinger. After recording their first demos, Dead Kennedys released their debut album, Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables
Slesinger left the band the following year to pursue an architecture career
Peligro stepped in to replace him on drums after earning the admiration of Biafra at S.S.I
Peligro quickly helped Dead Kennedys evolve into a more steadfast hardcore punk sound
relentless drumming style that would go on to help influence the wave of crossover thrash that followed
“I just pushed as hard as I could push,” said Peligro
“I’d get a little guff from Ray because he wanted me to slow down a bit
but I just kept going and I kept that pace up
Peligro made his recorded debut with Dead Kennedys on the 1981 EP In God We Trust
which famously marked the band’s first of many references railing against President Ronald Reagan
The record also includes their iconic hit “Nazi Punks Fuck Off.” Peligro’s hardcore drumming style continued in a modified form on the band’s sophomore album
and on through their next string of records: 1985’s Frankenchrist
and the 1987 compilation album Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death
Following Dead Kennedys break up in December 1986, Peligro briefly joined Red Hot Chili Peppers in 1988
The band was in need of a drummer after the departure of their original member Jack Irons
As a longtime friend of the band and former bandmate of Anthony Kiedis and Flea in their joke project Three Little Butt Hairs
He performed with Red Hot Chili Peppers and contributed to the songwriting process for several tracks on their fourth album
Peligro was also responsible for introducing Kiedis and Flea to then-teenager John Frusciante
who joined as their new guitarist shortly afterward
Red Hot Chili Peppers replaced him with Chad Smith several weeks later
and Flouride reunited Dead Kennedys with Brandon Cruz replacing Biafra
Apart from a one-year absence to address health-related issues
Peligro was a part of the band’s entire reunion effort
from multiple tours on through to live album releases like Mutiny on the Bay
During the later years of his career, Peligro performed with other artists both live and in the studio, including Moby
he fronted the bands Reverend Jones and the Cool Aid Choir
then people were thinking that it was music for white people
or I was the janitor or security or something
You got to experience the racism firsthand
because everybody wasn’t as open-minded as they were in San Francisco
but there’s still pockets of people who want to use punk rock to create hate music

Tsunamis are long waves formed from a sudden displacement of the sea floor due to a fault rupture
Given that Puerto Rico lies above a subduction zone in the Caribbean Sea
it is especially susceptible to large earthquakes and tsunamis
The greatest tsunami ever recorded in Puerto Rico occurred from an earthquake off the Mona Passage in 1918
The USGS Earthquake Hazards Program and the USGS Coastal and Marine Hazards and Resources Program are studying the risks of tsunamis in Puerto Rico and have developed detailed maps of the Caribbean fault traces
North of Puerto Rico is the Puerto Rico Trench, the deepest part of the Atlantic Ocean. This region poses a significant seismic and tsunami risk to Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Detailed seafloor mapping can provide a critical perspective for hazard assessment about the origin of the bathymetry, its gravity and development. Learn more about the Puerto Rico Trench.

a young woman and a privileged physician lived very different lives
Breanne McUlty knew about Dr Rajan Masih long before she met him
hooked on whiskey and methamphetamine and soon to be dealing heroin
prosperous family man running a hospital emergency room
But McUlty knew from those of her friends who preferred to get high on painkillers – effectively heroin in a legal pill – that Masih was the go-to doctor for illicit opioid prescriptions in Grant County, West Virginia.
“Everybody knew him as pretty much the top drug dealer around here,” said McUlty “Maybe he got greedy. Everybody makes mistakes just like I did. He’s a decent person now, trying to make up for it.”
But Masih was more than a dealer. The doctor was also hooked on the pills he was feeding to other opioid addicts.
Read moreThe lives of the privileged physician and the young woman whose upbringing set her on the path to addiction and selling hard drugs while she was still a child eventually crossed after each was freed from years in prison
They shared a parole officer who drug tested them
They also shared a belief that incarceration saved them from early deaths
“Arrest was the best thing that could have happened to me because I could not and I would not stop,” said Masih
“It was a downward spiral and I would have died.”
McUlty was 25 when she finally returned to her home town of Petersburg
Masih was 51 when he was released a few months earlier
stripped of his licence to practice medicine and with little idea what his future held in the struggling rural town of about 2,500 people
Freedom from prison and drugs gave the two former inmates clearer perspectives on the epidemic that has hit their state harder than any other. It has by far the highest overdose death rate in the country at double the national average
Opioids kill more West Virginians than guns and car accidents combined
although doctors increasingly notice a trend among the young to go straight to heroin whereas many older people come at it through prescription opioids
McUlty and Masih determined to do what they could to combat the epidemic they contributed to
But they have been daunted by the scale of the challenge
“I came home from prison thinking I was going to make a difference
I’m going to help all these people,” said McUlty
“Because I’m different now they’re going to see that they can be different too
It was a slap in the face when everybody was: ‘Screw you
Breanne McUlty talks to Mary Sue Connolly, who is making a documentary film about the opioids crisis in West Virginia
who was born in Chicago and is married to a former police officer
was working as an emergency room doctor a decade ago when he crashed a racing car and hurt his back
He self-medicated with samples of an opioid painkiller
Not only did it take my pain away but I immediately felt this is amazing
I’m not irritated and angry with patients all the time,” he said
Masih wrote fake prescriptions in the names of his mother
“After a few months I crossed that line where if I don’t have pills every four to six hours I’m in withdrawal
Just getting more pills would immediately bring me back to my new normal,” he said
Masih was well aware of the danger of addiction and conducted ultrasounds on his own liver to check for damage
But he kept taking the pills even as they left him ever more physically and emotionally detached from his family of five children
Here I am obsessed with getting my next pills and staving off withdrawal
Drug companies were pouring opioids into West Virginia, delivering 780m painkillers into a state of just 1.8m people over a five year period to 2012, according to an investigation by the Charleston Gazette-Mail
Here I am obsessed with getting my next pillsDr Rajan MasihDemand grew in part out of the physical toll of coal mining
marijuana and prescription pills to cope with the stresses and pain of work underground
But there had never been anything like the hydrocodone and oxycodone flooding onto the market in the 1990s
They were so effective and easy to get that miners often passed them out among themselves
Few were told how addictive these drugs were
opioids were so widely prescribed doctors noted rising addiction among people who had taken them to deal with relatively minor conditions such as broken bones
The drugs were in so many bathroom cabinets that word spread among young people looking to experiment that opioids provided a powerful high
The pills began to displace meth amphetamine which had long been used as inoculation against the struggles of life in marginalised communities
McUlty was dealing in drugs even though she was barely in her teens
She remembers her father using cocaine and meth amphetamine
Then he branched into prescription opioids
“He couldn’t get out of bed without them,” she said
Eventually the abuse to his body put him in hospital in a coma
McUlty describes struggling to find food in the house but said there was a steady stream of users and dealers passing through

Photograph: Chris McGreal/The GuardianDrugs were so much part of the daily routine that when someone asked the 15 year-old to sell a bit of morphine it seemed a natural thing to do
McUlty’s father confirmed her description of his dependence on drugs and alcohol
and the part it played in pushing his daughter along the path of dealing and addiction
she managed to avoid arrest for drugs but was convicted of stealing a pair of shoes
She was also expelled from school for disruption
Some anonymous call said I was pregnant and I was walking the streets
Sometimes I was barefoot and looked helpless I guess
My dad was driving by one day and saw me and said ‘You’ve got a court order’ and gave me the papers,” she said
The court made McUlty agree to move into a shelter for teenage mothers but she soon fled to Maryland where her daughter was born
Then she returned to Petersburg and slipped back into the old routine
“I really didn’t think there was a different way
I thought it was always going to be like that,” she said
the important thing for McUlty was to hang on to her daughter and she got back together with her daughter’s father
Her boyfriend was a heavy drug user and they fought a lot
McUlty moved in with her grandparents but was desperate for money so she started selling crystal meth
She went to a party and woke in a cupboard with no memory of the previous few hours but certain she had been raped
It never occurred to her to call the police
“It gives you a lot of energy but after a while your mental health starts floating away
Salvation for Masih came from a pharmacist who called the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) with suspicions about his prescribing
Armed DEA agents arrested him at the emergency room
“They asked me questions about an individual who overdosed on medications I prescribed
They asked me: ‘Did you write these prescriptions?’
I really didn’t think there was a different way
I thought it was always going to be like thatBreanne McUltyA DEA agent testified that of the 16 people who died from opioid overdoses in the area in the two years before Masih’s arrest
Masih prescribed one of them hundreds of opioid pills
He also prescribed the fentanyl patches that killed a woman
Masih faced 136 charges but reached a plea deal admitting a single count of illegally supplying opioids to a patient he knew to be injecting them
The doctor was jailed for four years and lost his medical licence
“I think I got a very fair deal out of the whole thing,” he said
“I 100% accept responsibility for what happened to me.”
Hundreds of people signed an online petition praising him as a doctor and calling for his release
including the county sheriff who regards Masih as guilty of more than he was convicted of but said the former doctor turned his life around and is respected in the town
Masih says he prescribed “recklessly” but not intentionally
“Recklessly to me means my barometer is off because I just took six hydrocodone and obviously this is not a sane decision making process,” he said
Does he feel responsibility for the deaths
I realise that many people became addicted to drugs or dependent on drugs as a result of me
I believe that people may have overdosed on medications that I prescribed
But these were people who already had been on narcotics for years through other doctors
I basically continued to do what their physicians had prescribed for them,” he said
McUlty did not miss the opportunity. She hooked up with Mexican dealers in Columbus, Ohio, a five hour drive west. She turned a 3.5g “eight ball” of heroin for $600 into several thousand dollars worth of individual hits on the street in Petersburg.
“It was very easy. I had mules go to Ohio with me. They would use condoms to hide it. Put it inside themselves. We would give addicts money and some of the drugs to take us. They’d do anything,” she said. “There is just so much money to be made in West Virginia, it’s kind of hard to walk away once you get the hang of it.”
Before long, McUlty reckons she was the leading heroin supplier in Petersburg. She was 19 years old.
There is just so much money to be made in West Virginia, it’s kind of hard to walk away once you get the hang of itBreanne McUltyBy then, McUlty had little contact with her daughter. If she had a family at all, she reckoned it was the Mexican dealers in Ohio. At the same time she was still using crystal meth.
“I was losing my mind, going crazy on it. I was watching the people I was selling meth to waste away and knew that would happen to me,” she said. “Addiction brings out the worst in people. Pure souls turn black. Even with the nicest person, the happiest person. They end up robbing and stealing. Hurting people.”
The end came when the police stopped a car she was travelling in and found a meth lab.
“We all went down because everybody was saying: ‘It’s not mine’,” she said. “One guy actually had business cards saying: ‘Can’t get up and go?’ with a picture of crystal meth on the card.”
A few months later, McUlty learned that another woman in the car was cooperating with the police. McUlty wrote her letters from jail warning that she would get killed and threatening to burn the woman’s house down.
“I guess if I’d had the chance, as mad as I was, I probably would have done something. But I don’t know if I would have burnt their house down,” she said.
“Federal prison saved me. This was my way out. I grew up in prison,” she said.
For the first time in years, contact with daughter became more important than getting a fix or doing a deal.
“I wrote her every single day. I wrote her poems. I drew her pictures,” she said.
But McUlty did not see her daughter. Her grandmother, who was caring for the child, cut off contact. The young mother found missing her daughter the toughest thing about incarceration.
Read morePrison helped Masih realise the scale of the epidemic
The former physician got an education from other inmates on the web of deception used by addicts to “doctor shop” in search of prescriptions using fake ID’s of changing one letter of a surname to bypass prescription monitoring programmes
Women used maiden and married names to double up on prescriptions
Artificial urine pumped through false penises to pass drug tests
But it was the dealers who were most organised
They shuttled groups of hard up elderly people to the doctor for opioid prescriptions
paying them a few hundred dollars for half of the pills
And they brought buyers in from out of state by the bus load
“The medical community has no idea how organised this is as you sit in your office
It was just unbelievable to me,” said Masih
“To someone who’s a diligent drug diverter
They are able to see any number of doctors and scam them into prescriptions.”
Masih said they were not the only ones scamming
Pharmaceutical companies pushed opioid drugs designed to deal with pain caused by cancer as appropriate for less severe conditions
all with the complicity of federal medical institutions
he finds it astonishing that most of his education on treating pain came from pharmaceutical company salesman
Masih attended courses on diagnosing headaches
skin cancer and end-of-life care but said the only information he received about opioids was from a representative of Purdue Pharma
the manufacturer of the powerful OxyContin pills at the heart of the epidemic
arrived each week with pizza to assure Masih that claims of addiction were exaggerated and to press him to prescribe more of the drug
Salesmen were threatening to back legal action against doctors who resisted patients’ demands for OxyContin“I got the bulk of my education about opioid narcotics from drug reps
They’d come in with a glossy brochure and tell us
were salesmen threatening to back legal action against doctors who resisted patients’ demands for OxyContin
“I feel a tremendous sense of betrayal,” said Masih
“These companies misrepresented the research
These people have just profited endlessly from firing the gun off the shoulder of doctors.”
The DEA’s investigation of Masih led to the prosecution of a local pharmacy
It paid a $2m civil penalty to settle the case in 2014
That in turn prompted a wider investigation of a drug distributor
for failing in its legal obligation to monitor deliveries of prescription drugs to pharmacies
McKesson paid $150m to settle the case earlier this year
Masih emerged from prison determined to do apply the lessons he learned
Masih gives talks on ways to roll back the epidemic by changing opioid prescribing
He has patented a system to monitor prescriptions through retina scans and thumbprints to curb “doctor shopping”
He has also written two textbooks on what he learned about all the ways dealers and addicts get prescription drugs
Masih struggled to find work as a convicted felon stripped of his medical licence but last year landed a post running an addiction recovery centre in Petersburg
“What we are seeing is that there are those older people who started with narcotic pain pills
transitioned to heroin because it’s dirt cheap
Then there are those 18 or 20 year olds who went straight to heroin
Very rapidly it evolves to injection,” he said
What most alarms Masih is that for all the political statements about combatting the opioid epidemic
he doesn’t see any real change in the medical profession
Everyone’s radar is up but at the end of the day we know the number of prescriptions nationwide have increased from 2015 to 2016,” he said
View image in fullscreenBreanne McUlty with her child in Petersburg. Photograph: Chris McGreal/The GuardianMcUlty too has a better understanding of the epidemic now she is not in the midst of it.
McUlty has rebuilt her life. Her daughter is living with her again. Last year she had another child, a son with her fiance who is also a recovering addict. She had trouble landing a job because of her felony conviction but eventually found work in a chicken factory, cleaning birds for $9.50 an hour.
She is part way through a photography course and is working on a film about her experiences. She is also volunteering to help refugees. Her father has fought back against addiction. He got onto medication and off the drugs. Still, the tragedy did not stop after prison. McUlty watched her brother, Bryan, die in hospital from heart disease brought on by the use of dirty needles.
Read moreMcUlty works to educate whoever will listen about drugs but says not many want to hear
She offered to give a talk to students at her former high school but the administration has yet to take her up on the offer
It seems like there’s more hopelessness than any one person can do anything about
I don’t think law enforcement can put a stop to it because people are always going to find a way
McUlty plans to leave after the summer and move to Atlanta where her fiance has transferred his job at a sanitation company

'documenting history' has perilsPhotographers in "The Nightcrawlers" documentary cover turmoil in the Philippines
"When I drive around the streets of Manila

Duterte exclaims: "There are three million drug addicts
I'd be happy to slaughter them to finish the problem of my country." More than three years into Duterte's war on drugs
But human-rights organizations claim it could be as high as 27,000
The verité-style film documents the complexity of the drug war in the Philippines
weaving together footage of the tireless photojournalists
speeding from one murder scene to another; interviews with unidentified vigilantes who say they are paid to kill; and the television clips of Duterte

seared in my mind: a woman cradling her dead partner in the street

But those allegedly involved in the drug war are not the only ones under attack

Twenty-three-year-old Eloisa Lopez is a photojournalist based in Manila
Just a few weeks into Duterte's administration

Born Darren Henley in 1959, Peligro was originally from St. Louis and joined the Dead Kennedys in 1981, replacing the punk band’s original drummer, Ted (Bruce Slesinger). Peligro’s debut with the band was on their 1981 EP In God We Trust, Inc.. He performed with the Dead Kennedys until they broke up in 1986 but reunited with them in 2001 minus Jello Biafra. He took another hiatus from the band in 2008 but came back a year later.
Over the years, Peligro also performed with Red Hot Chili Peppers (replacing drummer Jack Irons in 1988) but was ultimately fired due to his struggles with addiction at the time. Longtime DEAD KENNEDYS drummer D.H. Peligro died last October due to "combined effects of fentanyl and heroin," according to the autopsy report obtained by TMZ. The report says he also suffered from non-small cell lung cancer, but the medical examiner's pointing toward the combination of drugs as the official cause. Peligro was 63.
Peligro joined the DEAD KENNEDYS in February 1981, replacing original drummer, Ted, and made his recorded debut with the group on the EP "In God We Trust, Inc." which was released in December of that year. He would go on to record the studio albums "Plastic Surgery Disasters", "Frankenchrist" and "Bedtime For Democracy", as well as singles/rarities collection "Give Me Convenience Or Give Me Death". DEAD KENNEDYS broke up in December 1986.
In 2001, DEAD KENNEDYS, along with Peligro, reunited without former frontman and primary songwriter Jello Biafra following a civil fraud complaint against Biafra, accusing him of withholding royalties. DR. KNOW singer Brandon Cruz would replace Biafra on vocals and they played under the name DK KENNEDYS for a few concerts, but later reverted to DEAD KENNEDYS permanently.
In early 2008, Peligro took a hiatus from DEAD KENNEDYS, citing the need for time off from touring. The brief hiatus lasted until June 2009 when Peligro rejoined the band.
In 1988, Peligro joined the RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, replacing Jack Irons, before being fired for drug and alcohol issues. He has released three albums with his band PELIGRO: "Peligro" (released in 1995 on Biafra's Alternative Tentacles record label); "Welcome To America"; and "Sum Of Our Surroundings", which won "Rock Album Of The Year" at the 2004 American Independent Music Awards. He also recorded a cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze", which was nominated for a Grammy Award.

RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS bassist Flea has paid tribute to the band's former drummer D.H. Peligro, who has died at the age of 63.
Peligro's passing was announced earlier today (Saturday, October 28) by the legendary punk band DEAD KENNEDYS, with whom the drummer had played, on and off, for more than four decades. According to the DEAD KENNEDYS, Peligro — whose real name was Darren Henley — died at his Los Angeles home from trauma to his head from an accidental fall.
Flea took to his social media to write: "My dear friend, my brother I miss you so much. I'm devastated today, a river of tears, but all my life I will treasure every second.
"The first time I saw you play with the DK's in '81 you blew my mind. The power, the soul, the recklessness. You became my beloved friend, so many times of every kind. We had so much fun, so much joy, having each other's backs.
"I love you with all my heart. You are the truest rocker, and a crucial part of RHCP history. D H P in the place to be, you live forever in our hearts, you wild man, you bringer of joy, you giant hearted man. I will always honor you. Rest In Peace and freedom from all that restrained you."
Peligro joined RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS following founding drummer Jack Irons's exit but was fired from the band after only two months over his drug problems. Peligro was replaced by Chad Smith, who has played with RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS ever since. Three songs co-written by Peligro — "Knock Me Down", "Sexy Mexican Maid" and "Taste The Pain" — are featured on the CHILI PEPPERS' 1989 LP "Mother's Milk".
