Liga II roundup: Penafiel’s promotion charge
misery for Marítimo and Antunes’ tears | OneFootballPortuGOAL
Portugal’s second tier is almost at the halfway stage
and the latest round of matches brought us changes in the table
denting the Primeira Liga aspirations of some teams and boosting others
Defeat for previous leaders Tondela coupled with Penafiel’s good form sees the latter consolidate their position at the summit
while one of the pre-season favourites for promotion
continue their miserable campaign with another loss at Vizela on the back of their shock defeat at rock-bottom Oliveirense
experienced campaigner Antunes was reduced to tears in the wake of insults from his own fans
but ended the game a hero in a brilliant comeback win against Académico de Viseu
Tondela fell off their perch with a bang. A 1-4 loss at home for the Beirões against União de Leiria, who are on the rise and playing better every week in. I called it almost a month ago when they thrashed Benfica B
and for this win against Tondela Leiria didn’t even have star man Daniel dos Anjos
União de Leiria are in for a fight back to the Primeira Liga
Penafiel took advantage pull away at the top of the table with a 4-point lead (having played a game more) and some strange performances have put the Northern team at the summit
The performances are strange because in 17 games played by Penafiel
in maybe only 3 games were they were effectively better than the opposition
if the “star of Amorim” has migrated to Penafiel
but winning against Chaves (a clear promotion contender) with such a weak display… maybe the stars are aligned for Penafiel to go up
is probably the biggest disappointment this season
Everyone is entitled to make errors and sometimes it takes time to solve them
Marítimo are no longer a promotion contender
the traditionally strongest team from the Portuguese islands is now caught in the middle of the fight to flee relegation
Portimonense in 15th place has 17 points and 16 games played which means that if the results go sour for Marítimo they could end round 17 just one place above the relegation zone
with 3 losses in the last 3 games and only 1 win in their last 8
Oliveirense went back to their (not that) old ways of losing
The highlight of the game however was the rain that fell in Felgueiras that forced the staff that takes care of the turf to use milk fat to paint the lines
Whether it was the dairy-based products or not
Felgueiras were inspired to score three goals without reply against the desperate Oliveirense
FC Porto B also continues to surprise everyone in a bad way. João Brandão has probably the best FC Porto B team since 2016 when they were champions of the Segunda Liga
And if the championship was to end right now
the B team of the Dragões would be relegated to Liga 3
Villas-Boas is giving off Varandas’ vibes being this stubborn
The craziest game happened in Paços de Ferreira this week
Antunes (pictured above) stole the show for unusual reasons
which reduced this grown man with a long career behind him that has taken in clubs of the calibre of Roma
cried uncontrollably in the middle of the field
after underperforming and becoming the subject of insults from his own supporters
Antunes has been a decent full-back during his whole career
He surprisingly took a pay cut so that he could join his hometown club that showed him to the world
being insulted by his own people must’ve hurt him so bad
wiped his tears away and put in a performance of a lifetime in the second half helping his team make a fantastic comeback
winning 4-3 against promotion contenders Académico de Viseu

Arsenal get major injury boost for Champions League showdown with PSG
Oliveirense and FC Porto B are catching up having reversed their terrible early-season form in order to save themselves
I don’t know if it is the recent earthquakes in Portugal (albeit in Lisbon and the Azores
not in the north) or if they started eating something different
but something has rattled promotion contenders Penafiel.
Three losses in the last three matches and they have not won a single match for five straight games
It was supposed to be a comfortable promotion ride for both Tondela and Penafiel
Tondela managed to win against a poor Mafra team that is the gift that keeps on giving
Alverca are now clear promotion contenders
the biggest shareholder of the club sold his share
Alverca smashed Marítimo 5-0 at home to claim second place in the standings
it gives them a guaranteed spot in the Primeira Liga
a long-awaited return to the main stage.
But the battle for promotion is absolutely on fire in the Segunda Liga
TEN teams fighting for a promotion spot or a playoff spot
there are only ten points separating first place Tondela and 10th-placed Leiria
And on Sunday it’s derby day between Académico de Viseu and Tondela
The fight to avoid relegation is now hotting up
What seemed impossible for FC Porto B and Oliveirense is now a dream within reach for both teams
The Dragões have not lost in the Segunda Liga for four straight matches
drawing against Tondela and Leiria and beating Académico
lifting themselves to the relegation playoff spot that might save them from the drop and only four points short of the salvation positions
the absolute love you have been putting into the game… it is amazing
They have not lost a match for five straight games
Wilson Eduardo is a player very used to the big stages
He has played for historical Portuguese clubs such as Beira-Mar
Sporting and Braga (where he spent most of his career)
he showed that his leadership and knowledge on the pitch is of the most importance when a team is fighting for promotion in a lower league
Two goals of the five scored by Alverca against Marítimo earns him the Player of the Week award.

It was a very unusual week in Portugal’s Liga II
The top teams were shocked and none of them won
but still managed to stay leaders at the end of round 13
continued the rough patch they are going through with a 3-0 loss away from home against Feirense
which brings up the question: is Penafiel’s promotion drive running out of steam
PortuGOAL rounds up the weekend action in the Segunda Liga.
also took a huge hit this week with a thumping 5-0 loss against the historical União de Leiria
Daniel dos Anjos scored a hat-trick in 21 minutes to give the Leiria team the win
Académico de Viseu lost against Torreense in the battle for the promotion spots
In a very well-played match between two contenders for promotion
the Western Portugal team got the best of the Vitiathus
promoted after an excellent campaign with the club’s U23 team last season
has now guided the historical club from Torres Vedras to 4 wins and a draw in their last five matches. There are only six points separating the top 6 teams in Liga II and we are in for a hell of a fight for promotion.
at the basement things are already on fire
Oliveirense are an interesting team because it is not hard to criticize them
They are by far the worst attack in the championship and also have the worst defence
There is no light at the end of the tunnel
maybe only a red light that will guide them straight into relegation if things don’t start going well right now
They suffered four more goals against Alverca and have only six points in 13 games
FC Porto B and Mafra are also digging their own graves
The satellite team of FC Porto are facing their worst year ever
A team that was meant to be competitive and develop young talents on a professional level seems to abandon this idea week in week out
With poor tactics and a coach who doesn’t value youth
it is hard to implement the ideas that the administration has for this team
Mafra lost again after starting the game by going 1-0 up in the first minute
they seem to crumble and fall whenever they create an advantage
Portimonense finally won a match and left the relegation spots
I don’t know if the coach is reading my articles but their defence showed real improvement and understood that in this competitive championship
Could Portimonense aim for higher spots after this win
The former Benfica striker led União de Leiria to a shock win against the high-flying Benfica B with a 21-minute hat-trick
His first half performance was of a level that is hard to find in secondary championships such as the II Liga
The Brazilian striker is very experienced in this league
but it seems that this may be the year where he can solidify himself as a top striker
having notched 5 goals in 11 games for União de Leiria
With a powerful shot and amazing physicality
Daniel dos Anjos has all the ingredients to be on the top charts this season and
the question is: can Daniel dos Anjos be the spearhead that drives a promotion charge for União de Leiria
by José Ricardo Leite
Despite its popularity and its distribution in places such as Flint, Michigan
bottled water might not be as safe as you think
A test conducted by California nonprofit Center for Environmental Health finds that two bottled water brands — Peñafiel
owned by Keurig Dr Pepper and Starkey
owned by Whole Foods — contain levels of arsenic that are higher than tap water
High levels of arsenic, California law states
can cause reproductive harm and cancer. Products that violate recommended state levels of arsenic have to be labeled with a warning
“Customers typically purchase bottled water at exorbitantly high costs with the assumption that it is safer and healthier to drink than tap water
unaware that they are ingesting an extremely toxic metal linked to birth defects and cancer," said Michael Green
The latest: After high arsenic reports, Keurig Dr Pepper pulls bottled water sold at Target, Walmart
Studies also show that it can cause hormone disruption and organ damage
It corroborates independent findings released earlier this year by Consumer Reports
which found that the same brands of water have nearly double the federal limit of arsenic in water.
Keurig Dr Pepper stopped production of Peñafiel for two weeks after the release of the initial Consumer Reports study
with proposals to improve water filtration. So far
the Food and Drug Administration has yet to recall either brand of bottled water

“Beyond the required annual testing by an FDA certified lab
we have an accredited third-party lab test every production run of water before it is sold
and our test results from the same lot analyzed by Consumer Reports show that these products are fully compliant with FDA standards for heavy metals," said a Whole Foods spokesperson to USA TODAY. "We would never sell products that do not meet FDA requirements.”
Peñafiel is currently sold at Target, Walmart and other vendors
Earlier this year, Consumer Reports found potentially harmful levels of metals including arsenic in fruit juices
On Friday, Keurig Dr Pepper announced it was voluntarily pulling the water and offering consumers refunds.

Magikland offers attractions and fun for all ages
the park officially opens its doors on April 13 and will remain open until September
although with some limitations during the low season
But what’s so special about Magikland
Magikland’s area is estimated to occupy around 7 hectares
covering six different themed areas that promise to provide fun moments
According to NIT, in 2024 Magikland opened two slides: a 10-meter slide for children and an 80-meter slide for adults
the park has several green areas perfect for escaping the sun
In addition to the themed areas and attractions
the space has bars and a self-service restaurant where you can have light and/or full meals
Also noteworthy is the ” Cantinho das Guloseimas ” – a treat for the sweet tooth
entry is free for children up to the age of three
which is particularly recommended during the high season to avoid long queues
Magikland is approximately 35 kilometers away
There are train connections between Porto and Penafiel
you’ll need to walk the rest of the way (which can take around 55 minutes)
Editor’s note: Although the official website states that the opening date is April 13
The Extreme Penafiel course in Lagares and Figueira areas outside of Porto
saw competitors in six classes and a very strong Spanish contingent making the trip across the Iberian border
With the rain being a big feature of the day
the race was one of the most demanding of the season
The nerve centre of the event was the Figueira football field with riders facing a 24 kilometer course that was covered four times by the fastest riders
Diogo Vieira returned to TNHE after his absence on the last round and won
But the Portuguese star had to deal with determined efforts from his nearest opponents Tiago Oliveira
winner of the trophy in 2021 who won the morning prologue
and Ni Esteves who kept the multi-time champion honest for most of the afternoon race
In the Open class the winner was Diego Rodrigues in front of Daniel Branco and Álvaro Mouta with Marco Ferreira winning in the Juniors ahead of João Miguel and Ricardo Almeida
The Experts saw Emanuel Costa in charge ahead of Luis Gonçalves and Tiago Sousa. Not always as competitive but certainly the most numerous
the Hobby squad saw Anxo Ares come out as winner ahead of Carlos Gonçalves and Daniel Rodriguez
TNHE round five happens on November 13 in the picturesque Serra da Boneca in Sebolido
Penafiel which many will know as the final stage for the 2022 Extreme XL Lagares finish
