The 'Dana' isolated high level depression has left some shocking images as it passes through Spain
collapsed infrastructures and people trapped in houses
vehicles or high places are some of the destructive effects of the storm that has hit the country
The Valencia region has been one of the areas hardest hit by the storm
which we know has claimed the lives of several people
although neither their number nor their identities are known at the moment
The AVE high-speed train service between Madrid and the Valencian capital has been suspended until further notice
numerous rivers and ravines have overflowed and Civil Protection units warned the public on Tuesday to avoid any kind of travel in the area
In the videos that accompany this article you can see the results produced by the storm on Tuesday in the east and south of the country

characterised by the quantity and virulence of the rain
as well as strong winds - with some tornadoes in the Levante area - soon filled the social media networks with testimonies of bravery
But as the late afternoon and evening of Tuesday progressed
recorded in many cases by those affected themselves to warn of their dire situation
the city itself suffered some of the worst damage
was the place that received the most rain and where the flooding from the Dana was most noticeable
According to the Associació Valenciana de Meteorologia (Avamet)
Videos circulated on social media networks of some of its streets turned into rivers that dragged and piled up dozens of vehicles
Also the collapse of a footbridge over the river that connects the metropolitan area and Picanya

such as the rescue of a woman trapped in her house in Valencia who
Spain's UME military emergency response unit also recorded several of its interventions
The emergency services did not stopped working during the early hours of the morning either
where several people are missing due to the floods
will visit the area this Wednesday to see the effects of the rains and the floods that have affected the town

when it is expected to reopen the affected section to Castelló
That is why moving around Valencia during these Fallas if you live in Paiporta
Picanya or Picassent will be somewhat more complicated
Metrovalencia has confirmed that the bus line linking València Sud with Picanya and Paiporta will run during the nights of Fallas
as well as the shuttle from Safranar between Torrent and Valencia
which will extend its service until 6 hours during the central days of the Fallas (from March 15 to 19)
The shuttle buses between Picassent and Valencia will extend their service at night until 2 am
while those that link with the towns of the region of La Ribera will run on their usual schedule
These buses connect the Jesus stop (lines 1
The following lines detail the special bus services that Metrovalencia has activated until March 19

Residents living near two towns on the east coast of Spain will soon be able to sign up to receive power from the country’s first community agrophotovoltaic projects
which are being built to help reduce local electricity bills while exploring the impact solar shading has on the cultivation of tropical fruit
The municipalities of Picassent and Montserrat in the Valencia region will host agroPV parks with a capacity of 1.5MW and 1MW
that are set to be connected to the grid by the end of the year
these two projects will supply the energy needs of around 500 consumers – including households
businesses and public facilities – located within a 50km radius
with the potential to expand both developments in the future to meet demand
The projects will be supported by funding from the European Union (EU)
the Spanish government and the local Valencian authority
as well as a €100 (US$119) fee that each consumer pays to become a member of cooperative Sapiens Energía
which specialises in the creation and management of such renewable energy communities
The community model is ultimately “about putting energy in the hands of the people”
co-founder and president of Sapiens Energía
who says public interest has been strong from previous community solar projects the organisation has worked on before
in part due to an increased awareness surrounding the environmental impacts of electricity consumption as well as concerns about energy bills
Sacri says consumers from the new agroPV plants could see savings of “between 20% and 30%” on their annual electricity bill
In a move to reduce energy poverty in the local area
part of the electricity from each project will also be allocated for residents who struggle to pay their bills
As Sapiens moves into the agroPV segment for the first time
Sacri points to successful projects that have previously been implemented in markets such as Germany
it can help alleviate two problems that have worsened in recent years: price pressure for agricultural producers and the lack of job opportunities
The site of the Picassent facility was previously a pig farm for 20 years
It has been renovated to allow for the deployment of both ground-mounted and rooftop PV
featuring a total of 3,744 modules of 400W alongside 12 string inverters
which has been used for the cultivation of wine grapes
2,496 modules will be installed in a field at a minimum height of 2.5 metres above ground level and be connected to five string inverters
Spanish PV developer Transición Energética Solar (TRANESOL) has partnered Sapiens Energía to bring forward the projects
while Valencia-based company Ingeniería y Desarrollos Renovables will carry out construction work
which is slated to begin before the summer
“We consider that although they are more complicated projects to implement
all possible disadvantages will be amply cancelled out by the benefits obtained.”
The partners are initially looking to use the sites to plant a range of tropical crops such as dragon fruit as well as medicinal plants and mushrooms
the optimisation of shading will be one of the main aspects that detmine the success of the projects
Alongside the opportunity to explore crop growth beneath solar installations
other benefits that are provided by colotating solar with agriculture include increasing land profitability
boosting employment and making use of perimeter security systems to prevent the theft of high-value crops
“We consider that although they are more complicated projects to implement
all possible disadvantages will be amply cancelled out by the benefits obtained,” says José Castelblanque
Support from the Valencian government is said to have been crucial in positioning the region as Spain’s leader for community solar
with €500,000 of non-refundable grants provided for seven projects in 2020
This fund has been increased to €2 million this year
with grants covering up to 65% of project costs
Castelblanque believes the community agroPV model could be copied in other parts of Spain in the future: “Without doubt it is a replicable model
although it requires detailed study of the characteristics of each zone to be able to implement the most appropriate crops.”

is involved in a restructuring plan meant to lead the company to focus further on high-quality and higher innovative textiles
After a recent overall €13 million investment
the textile manufacturer has concentrated its productive facilities in a single site
and wants to concentrate more on innovative materials
though on most innovative and sustainable denim solutions only
The SPIN OFF has talked about such changes in strategy with Jose R
vice president and fourth-generation owner of Tejidos Royo
The company was originally established in in 1903 in L’Alcudia de Crespins
Until recently Tejidos Royo counts for a reportedly 20 million meter yearly productive capacity and has been operating through four different factories
hosting a spinning and Dry Indigo sustainable denim facility
Photo: Tejidos Royo Tejidos Royo The company has always been involved in taking new steps before the others
they were pioneers in developing piece-dyed and pre-washed fabrics
they were among the first ones to develop and use sustainable
creating a new sustainability standard in the industry
they started collaborating with other manufacturers with recycled fabrics when this technique was still unknown.
More recently they also developed patented technologies fully focused on saving water and energy
trying to focus their commitment toward being cleaner
more efficient and producing fewer emissions
By facing the recent changes occurring in the market
Tejidos Royo decided to operate differently and
while looking for new solutions that could help it reduce costs and increase efficiency
they decided to move all their factories to L’Alcudia de Crespins.“By grouping all factories together
increasing speed to market while focusing further on R&D and innovation
This move costed us €7 million,” explained Jose Royo
Photo: Tejidos Royo Manufacturing facility
Tejidos Royo “Along with that we have invested an additional €6 million in a new spinning plan
that will put Tejidos Royo in the center of the market
and will help it produce both fashion and technical fabrics,” he added
“Thanks to the new spinning plan we will be able to spin a wider selection of yarns
produce both natural and synthetic fibers all in the same plant and at the time
without any contamination among the different production lines,” he continued
“What we are talking about are four different plants
This is going to be the new revolution for the company for the years to come,” he explained
continues to believe that the textile industry can continue to be important for the future
not the volume for basics player,” commented Royo
“The fashion business is price-driven
as we are product and innovation specialists
For this we want to continue investing in our people–the best technicians we have–as well as in new niches
in innovation and in technical fabrics as they are an important part of our business
but we want to get the most in all areas,” he explained
The company will continue producing denim fabrics
though only its most innovative and sustainable variants
like the Dry Indigo and Dry Black selections
“We have abandoned the ‘old’ denim
products that Europe will ban soon,” he added
“After four years we have been improving our Dry Indigo technology
we are totally convinced this is the future of denim,” Royo added
our denim has better crocking properties than the traditional one
and the effects we can create by using laser and new technologies is incredible
and we believe it is the only way,” he added
Photo: Tejidos Royo Tejidos Royo Answering about some rumors circulating on Amazon having bought some of the company’s facilities
but that landscape we sold had never been used for textile manufacturing,” he underlined
pointing out how the Royo group is involved in different sectors in addition to textiles

Picassent irrigation community distributes and manages irrigation water for over 387 hectares of crops to more than 900 users
Water is taken from the Tous dam through the Júcar-Turia canal
a large waterway that delivers water for irrigation and municipal use in the Valencia region of Spain
Water issuesWhile the water is very suitable for irrigation
it comes with a high organic load given it is a surface water
Abundant sunlight and low water flow in the dam create a very suitable environment for algae
This creates a continuous need for maintenance of water installations
This is a recurring cost for the irrigation community and its users
as much of the maintenance process requires manual involvement
It also causes frequent backwash of the filters
and additional energy spending in water pumping due to the higher resistance to water flow
Users of the irrigation community see a negative impact of the high organic content in terms of crop productivity
caused by non-uniform irrigation and high levels of pathogens in the water
Overview of HPGen installation at the irrigation head
Sustainable water treatment with HPGenHPGen systems generate a safe concentration of Peroxide UltraPure
a very high purity solution of hydrogen peroxide
Peroxide UltraPure is injected into the irrigation system
where it oxidizes organics and prevents their further growth
This advanced form of water treatment keeps the filters
and other components clean for the irrigation community
and protects the crops and drip lines for its users
an HPGen system was installed at one of the filtration stations
The filtration station has two main filters
with two separate sets of piping and users
To properly compare the impact and benefits of the HPGen system
only one of the filters was dosed with Peroxide UltraPure
while the other one was left without filtration
which introduced peroxide before the filters in a continuous manner together with irrigation water
The filters were compared after 120 days of starting the injection
during which clear differences appeared between the section with dosing and that without
the filters at the treated section appeared much cleaner
which were not present at the section that received Peroxide UltraPure dosing
This means that the need for maintenance on the filtration system is heavily reduced
and the effects of zebra mussel colonies growing in the water system are mitigated
No more zebra musselsZebra mussels have been plaguing the irrigation community for a long time
The aquatic animal has been an invasive species in Europe for centuries
negatively impacting both ecosystems and agricultural communities
Combatting the zebra mussels has mostly been focused on controlling strategies
as they are difficult to eliminate entirely once established
The complete disappearance of zebra mussel colonies after application of the HPGen system is a hopeful sign not only for the Picassent irrigation community
but also for the broader struggle against this invasive species
Healthier cropsPeroxide UltraPure not only had a positive effect on the filters
Growers belonging to the irrigation community also noticed a visible impact in their fields
Drippers and irrigation lines started flowing much more uniformly

Elizabeth Hunt and her husband Vitalij Farafonov were in Spain to attend a yoga retreat
and after having dropped off their four children with their grand-parents in Barcelona
decided to plan a day trip to the Valencia region
“Most of the day was uneventful and the weather was rainy
grey and windy,” Farafonov told the Luxembourg Times in an interview
To the right and to the left of us there was a two-meter drop to the level of the orchards and we saw water filling this space and then completely flooding the road
staff at the restaurant warned the couple to be careful on their way back to Alicante
but “it was quite pleasant outside and [there was] no indication of what was to come,” Farafonov said
the couple soon had to deal with heavy rain and wind and was redirected by the police
“We couldn’t believe what we saw just a few hundred meters ahead of where we had stopped
We had to weave our way between nine or ten lorries overturned on their side on a stretch of road less than 1km long,” Farafonov said
explaining that it had later been confirmed that a tornado had ripped through the area
“We were incredibly lucky to have stopped just a few hundred meters before it,” the man said
and wound up on narrow roads lined with orchards on the outskirts of Algemesi
and the couple took a path leading towards the city
“To the right and to the left of us there was a two meter drop to the level of the orchards and we saw water filling this space and then completely flooding the road,” Farafonov recounted
“It was 8pm and the water was rising very fast and we knew that the best chance we had was to try to stop the car being swept away by the water,” he continued
“My wife climbed out of the window of the car and tethered it to a nearby barrier,” he said
the windows of their car open in case they needed to escape
as water levels continued to rise until 2am
Farafonov and Hunt were able to continue driving
“We saw the fuller extent of devastation from the flooding and the tornado
It was awful and we knew that we were very lucky that the stretch of road where we stopped was at an elevation of 23m above sea level
we would not have been as fortunate,” Farafonov said
We will be forever grateful that we made it out and back to our children
After finding a functioning gas station in Paiporta – most in the area were closed due to the flooding or energy cuts – the couple was able to complete their journey and reach their retreat
The 100 kilometres they drove that morning took them 3.5 hours to complete
with Hunt having to stand in front of the car at intervals to estimate the depth of the waters they came across
“It was a very long night and having seen the level of destruction in Paiporta we now realise that we were in the centre of the flooding,” said Farafonov
with more victims likely to be found as the authorities and armed forces continue to clear the damage done in the area
As shared by local residents in Spanish media
Farafonov and Hunt explained that “the first telephone alert that we got (which was the same as the recent test alert in Luxembourg) was as we were being trapped by the water so there was no chance to do anything and there was no higher ground that we could go to.”
Thanks to their luck and actions, the couple was finally able to reunite with their children.
“We will be forever grateful that we made it out and back to our children,” Farafonov said.
The catastrophe in the Valencia region is the worst flood-related disaster in Europe in fifty years, according to news agency Reuters.
Aside from lives lost, the region witnessed vast material damages too, as the floods swept away cars, broke down infrastructure and got into people’s homes. 75 cities in the region were hit, as well as three towns in other regions.
Though officials cannot determine the full cost of the damages, the head of the Valencia Chamber of Commerce told Spanish public broadcaster TVE the bill would exceed €10 billion.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced that the government would earmark up to €10.6 billion for its first relief package
The president of the region had said he would ask for €31.4 billion in aid
The government of Valencia has pledged €250 million in aid
promised €100 million in donations for victims of the floods
The Spanish Red Cross – la Cruz Roja – has set up a page to donate in support for the victims too.

The storm which swept across the Comunidad Valenciana on Monday caused significant damage and disruption in the three provinces of Alicante
At the reservoir of Buseo it is reported that the rainfall during a 12-hour period reached 155 millimetres
although according to the State meteorological agency Aemet the highest official figure was 114 millimetres in Castellfort (Castellón)
and the ports of both Valencia and Gandia were closed due to wind speeds of up to 80 kilometres per hour and stormy seas
At the same time power cuts caused disruption in various towns in the province of Valencia
Local Aemet weather stations reported rainfall of over 100 millimetres in Siete Aguas
Benageber and Picassent in the province of Valencia
Sot de Ferrer and Catí in Castellón and Murla and Vall de Laguar in the province of Alicante
where throughout the Marina Alta area the storm reached true “Gota Fría” proportions
the regional amateur meteorologists association Avamet reports a pluviometer reading of 174 millimetres.
Most of the damage in Alicante occurred in coastal municipalities
with aluminium window and door frames being torn off the balconies of a 16-floor block on the seafront in Torrevieja
This occurred during one of two tornados which formed during the morning
Fallen trees and branches littered the streets right along the coast and significant damage was caused to beaches and beachfront street furniture in several locations
As the storm moved up into Cataluña similar reports of heavy rain and strong winds continued, the strom claiming four lives when a residential home for the elderly was flooded after a river burst its banks, four residents with limited mobility drowning as basement rooms were flooded.
