Many of the victims initially considered in 'serious condition' or 'less serious condition' have also improved and some are already being discharged.  the victims were sent to various hospitals in Catalonia all employees of the Spanish retail giant Inditex on their way to the company's logistics base in Tordera Emergency services received the call just before 9 am and dispatched 26 units of firefighters nine ambulances and two medical helicopters to the area All passengers and the driver were eventually evacuated after some were trapped inside the bus Apart from those who needed immediate hospitalization the rest of the passengers were taken to the Can Xaubet sports center in Pineda de Mar where they received medical and psychological care "It has been a very severe accident," Ramon Lamiel, head of the Catalan traffic service, told media outlets on-site. He said that this accident, added to several others reported on Monday on the AP-7 highway, will complicate traffic for the upcoming days. "We expect to take the bus out between Tuesday and Wednesday, which will force authorities to block the road completely," he added. The accident occurred at the entrance to the tunnel that connects Tordera and Santa Susanna, near Pineda de Mar, at kilometer 125 of the C-32 highway. The lane to Girona was closed and trapped cars were directed backwards, until circulation was restored again around 11 pm. Due to the position in which the bus crashed against the upper part of the tunnel, emergency services had to work all day to clear the area and restore circulation.  The C-32 in the opposite direction, towards Barcelona, operates normally. Catalan police Mossos d'Esquadra have launched an investigation to determine the causes of the accident.   According to witnesses, the accident happened suddenly. Ricardo, the brother of one of the victims, who was on her first day at Inditex, told the Catalan news agency (ACN) of his sister's experience. "She does not remember much. She suffered a blow to the head, but she was able to get out of the bus on her own and was conscious the whole time," he said. Get the day's biggest stories right to your phone v1.1.0. In January 2020, storm Gloria battered the line with 3.6-metre (12ft) waves causing widespread damage and putting several sections out of action the company responsible for railway infrastructure spent €12m (£10m) repairing and shoring up a 1.4-mile (2.2km) stretch of track and replacing a bridge removing even the thin buffer between trains and waves A passenger braves the fury of storm Gloria in 2020. Joan Campolier, the mayor of Santa Susanna, which lies midway between Pineda de Mar and Malgrat de Mar, has called for a definitive solution, even if it means closing the line for longer. His counterpart in La Pineda, Xavier Amor, agrees, saying there is no point in trying to fix the problem by patching it up. Vilaplana believes the only long-term solution is to move the line inland, to run parallel with the motorway. Not only would this guarantee the safety and viability of the train – he says it is only luck that there hasn’t been a serious accident – it would free up land that would allow for wider beaches, which research shows is the best defence against erosion. The four pro-independence parties, led by the Together party of former regional president Carles Puigdemont, were set to get a total of 61 seats, short of the key figure of 68 seats needed for a majority in the chamber. The Socialists, led by former health minister Salvador Illa, were on course to win 42 seats, up from 33 in 2021, when they also barely won the most votes but were unable to form a government. The Socialists will still need to earn the backing of other parties to put Illa in charge. Dealmaking in the coming days, perhaps weeks, will be key to forming a government. Neither a hung parliament nor a new election is out of the question. Read moreBut Illa’s surge should bode well for the prime minister, Pedro Sánchez and the Socialists before European parliament elections next month The snap election was called in March by Catalonia’s ERC president after opposition parties voted down the budget proposed by his minority government The ERC (Republican Left party) had governed in coalition with Junts, which is led by the self-exiled former Catalan president Puigdemont, until festering disagreements led the latter to abandon the government in October 2022 Sunday’s vote comes six and a half years after Puigdemont plunged Spain into its worst political crisis in decades by staging an unlawful, unilateral referendum on regional independence and following it up with a unilateral declaration of independence The conservative Spanish government of the time responded by sending in thousands of police officers to stop people voting, often violently. It then sacked Puigdemont and his cabinet, dissolved the regional parliament and took direct control of Catalonia. Puigdemont fled Spain to avoid arrest leaving other key figures in the independence movement to face trial and prison and called for a new “era of dialogue and understanding” they were nothing like as contentious as the amnesty law that Sánchez introduced in April in order to win the support of the ERC and Junts and thereby secure his return to office after last summer’s inconclusive general election Polls had consistently pointed to a win for the PSC Illa has acknowledged that some people remain unconvinced by the amnesty which the People’s party and others have decried as a cynical self-serving and craven piece of political manoeuvring by Sánchez but he has said the move and other conciliatory gestures have greatly reduced tensions He accused the ERC and Junts of being too obsessed with independence to improve Catalonia’s declining public services or to prepare for the drought in the region over the past three years Free weekly newsletterThe most pressing stories and debates for Europeans – from identity to economics to the environment In an interview with the Guardian on Friday Illa said a PSC-led government would allow Catalonia to move past what he called a lost decade of rule by the ERC and Junts “This election could – and should – open a new era in Catalonia that I’d define in two words: the verbs ‘unite’ and ‘serve’,” he said “When you talk to people about what matters to them about education – which was always excellent in Catalonia but which is now lagging behind the rest of Spain – about infrastructure who is preparing to return to Spain once the amnesty law takes effect has said his party may abandon its support for Sánchez if it does not like the composition of a PSC-led government During a final campaign rally in the south of France on Friday Puigdemont appealed for the faithful to come out and vote “This vote will be a banged fist on the table – a way of saying ‘enough!’,” he told supporters “Enough of mistreating our language and culture and saying sorry for who we want to be The moment to say ‘enough!’ is now – saying it the day after the election will be too late.” Aragonès also urged pro-independence voters to turn out in force “I ask you to fill the ballot boxes with republican votes,” he said on Friday against the monarchy and against corruption Recent polls suggest the appetite for an independent Catalonia continues to diminish. At the height of the crisis in October 2017, a survey by the Catalan government’s centre for opinion studies found that 48.7% of Catalans supported independence and 43.6% did not. A poll in March from the same centre found 51% were against and 42% in favour. All rights reserved At 38, Pere Aragonès has become Catalonia’s youngest president since the transition to democracy in the 1970s and the first person Esquerra Republicana member to hold the post with full executive powers since the 1930s But who is this pro-independence politician and how did get to where he is today The grandson of a hotelier and longtime mayor of Pineda de Mar Aragonès is not the charismatic leader one thinks of when pondering the question of what it means to be a prominent politician.  He’s more of the meticulous managerial type for his thorough study of superfluous tax money spending detailed in Spain’s official gazette or for frequently measuring his words to avoid being the sole focus of attention.  This restraint applies to his private life too: the snippets he shares of his home life with his wife Janina—who actually used to be a member of the conservative Convergència party—their child Clàudia are always endearing yet calculated.  And although he’s one of the few distinguished left-wing politicians who still always wears a suit and tie he’s long been an active Esquerra party member having joined the youth group in 1998 at the age of 16 before becoming their spokesperson from 2004 to 2007.  With a law degree from Catalonia’s Open University and a master’s in economic history from the University of Barcelona the politician has held various positions in politics since 2006 when he became an MP in the Catalan parliament at the young age of 24 He has also studied economic development and public policy at Harvard University.  Aragonès was appointed Catalonia’s economy secretary a post he held at the height of the 2017 independence push and while many of his colleagues were charged and sentenced for organizing the referendum Aragonès has steered clear of the same fate and has always denied having used public or international funds for this purpose.  a journalist who describes him as the embodiment of “pragmatic pro-independence” politics in the only biography that has ever been written about him openly questions whether Esquerra strategically protected him knowing that one day he would lead the party.  serving a 13-year sentence for sedition and misuse of public funds and their second in command Marta Rovira in Switzerland to avoid trial Aragonès became the party’s most senior member in 2018 as vice president in the coalition government with JxCat.  When president Quim Torra was barred from public office in September 2020 for hanging yellow ribbons in solidarity with the jailed leaders from public buildings during an electoral campaign period, Aragonès became Catalonia’s interim president - a position he has maintained since then. As a politician, Aragonès is a left-leaning euro-enthusiast who is very much in favor of independence, but has always taken a less confrontational approach than JxCat politicians.  It is no secret this is one of the biggest hurdles the parties have had to overcome in order to reach a coalition agreement and to avoid a snap election.  “There are different points of view, different strategic views, as to how we can achieve independence so we needed some time to put these two different views together,” the ERC politician explained openly. And although seeking independence will be one of the key issues for the Catalan government in the coming years, Aragonès is clear that the effects of the Covid-19 crisis will also have to be countered.  “The agreement between Junts and Esquerra Republicana is to continue working for Catalan independence,” Aragonès told Catalan News, but it is also “for the reconstruction of Catalonia after the pandemic.” A MAN from Henley will take on an ironman challenge in memory of a teenager who died in a car crash last year a 112-mile bike ride and a 26-mile run in Calella Delivering the news from Henley on Thames and South Oxfordshire for over 100 years He died in February last year aged 19 when the BMW he was travelling in struck a tree on the A4130 between Bix and Nettlebed Sammy is the younger brother of Mr Trailor-Thompson’s oldest friend who lives in Nicholas Road with mother Justine Morris and sister Zuzu Phillips hopes to raise more than £3,500 for RoadPeace The challenge starts and finishes at Calella beach followed by cycling two loops along the coastline from Calella to Badalona The third leg is a three-lap run between Calella and Pineda de Mar Mr Trailor-Thompson said: “Sammy grew up doing triathlons so I’ve wanted to do an ironman for quite a while and it all aligned It felt like the right thing to do and the right time to do it “Jamie’s family have also been involved and supported by RoadPeace since Sammy’s road traffic collision Just seeing that they’ve had that safe space and relatability has definitely helped them in the changes in circumstances that have happened since The reason I’ve gone with the charity is mainly because I do think stuff needs to be done around road safety if you look at other developed countries in the world they all have a graduated driving licence system and that system has significantly helped their road safety not only for their own lives but for the possible collateral loss if they were to get into an accident there’s probably been a number of incidents like this just around Henley “There can be a lot of social pressures that people think they need to live up to and I think more can be done “Driving with a black box for a year made my driving so much better because I was conscious of how you drive I don’t understand why you can’t mandate that as something for young drivers “The loss of life risk to any innocent bystander or any other road user or children crossing the road from school is mental and it’s like they’re putting so much trust in teenage boys who really don’t have any requirement to be monitored or anything Mr Trailor-Thompson has spent the last six months in training for what will be his first triathlon He has trained for between 10 and 20 hours a week including in the pool at Gillotts leisure centre and cycling in and around Henley and the Chilterns He said: “Sammy was very sporty when he was younger and was part of Henley Triathlon Club especially towards the last part of his life I found myself being in a position to really relate to him and that was really lovely “Jamie and I went to nursery together at Treetops in Henley We’ve known each other since we were two years old Sammy had always been a large part of my life.” Mr Trailor-Thompson hopes to overcome his fear of deep water He said: “It’s an irrational fear so this will be a serious undertaking I’m going to have to be in deep water for about an hour surrounded by other people which I think will make it better but it’s still going to be mentally challenging That was definitely a big reason for me picking this one because there’s various different iron man races I’ve only been swimming for fitness for the last six months and I’ve put a huge amount of work into it “I have been exposing myself to open water swimming bit by bit over the last two months and I’m now confident enough to be in the water on my own I think the adrenaline will get me through “I’m definitely feeling apprehensive but also feeling anxious and excited I’ve done enough work now and I feel comfortable and confident that I’ll see it through to the end.” HIGGS GROUP Tel: 01491 419400 www.higgsgroup.co.uk HENLEY PAGES challenge despite discovering an injury which meant he had to go to hospital cycled 112 miles and ran 26 miles in Callela He took on the challenge in memory of Sammy Phillips the younger brother of his oldest friend Jamie who died in a car crash in February last year The BMW he was travelling in struck a tree between Bix and Nettlebed completed the challenge in 10 hours and 49 minutes He set off from Garbí Beach in Calella on October 6 for the swim despite finding out after the feat that he had heat exhaustion and ischemic colitis a condition which affects the large intestine Participants have to swim a lap at the beach cycle two loops along the coastline from Callela to Badalona and the final leg is a three-lap run between Callela and Pineda de Mar sister Zuzu and their mother Justine Morris Mr Trailor-Thompson said: “I can’t explain the feeling you get crossing that finish line and to be able to do that in Sammy’s memory felt amazing I felt really sore and I had to go to hospital in the evening in Callela The ordeal was a bit scary but I’m in the UK now and I’m doing well “During the final leg it was really hard to keep going I got to one-and-a-half miles to go and I was really starting to shut down I think it’s because I knew the finish line was coming My body was started to tell itself to chill out I had exercise-related heat exhaustion and on Sunday evening I had a body temperature of around 40C but I was super “I’m really scared of deep water but that didn’t really affect me on the day which was probably due to adrenaline but also the fact that you get this real sense of community It’s weird because you’re on your own but you also feel like you’re part of a team “When they were prepping everyone to get into the water ‘You’ve all got your why’ and the why is a big thing I was thinking I had to finish it for Sammy There wasn’t really a question of finishing it or not who supported him for the duration of the challenge Mr Trailor-Thompson said: “Millie was incredibly proud of me She ran about 10km chasing me around the route Having her supporting me made a massive difference.” He said the swim was easier than he anticipated because of good conditions He said: “The swim was really straight forward My body felt absolutely fine the whole time “I didn’t have any issues at all so I was quite happy with that The route for the cycle ride was fantastic It was right next to the Mediterranean so you’re overlooking the ocean for most of it where I started struggling a little bit and I’d taken in a lot of fluids by that point so my tummy was quite sore but I pushed through it and took it a little bit easy for a few minutes and was able to recover and get a good speed after that “The first four-miles of the run were really tough Your legs don’t want to move in the way you want them to There were definitely points where your brain is telling you no but you’ve got to push through that I started picking up a little bit of speed and stopping at various nutrition stations and that was my strategy for the rest of the race “When the pain came and the mental challenge that’s when you think of why you’re doing it It’s only natural at those points that Sammy occupied my mind and it was a big driving force to get out of a rut and move on.” Mr Trailor-Thompson hopes by raising money for RoadPeace He said: “It feels amazing to know that I can hopefully do something to make a real change and prevent an unnecessary loss of life “Graduated driving licences should really be in place and hopefully RoadPeace can use that money to help drive that change “Something needs to change in the legislation to protect the lives of people who are probably too young and too inexperienced to know how much danger they are in when they are driving cars there are so many more cars on the road and I think it’s crazy that the onus is put on 17- 18- or 19-year-old boys to keep themselves safe when your brain may not be in a grown enough state to make rational decisions.” So that your dogs don't suffer so much from the heat and you don't suffer going to the beach without them we leave you the best beaches to swim together The perfect
