A former Bridgewater-Raritan High School gym teacher and coach who pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a student has lost her teaching license
was sentenced by Superior Court Judge Peter Tober on Feb
14 to 364 days in the Somerset County Jail after she pleaded guilty on Nov
Pinto agreed to relinquish her certificates to teach health and physical education
driver education and students with disabilities
The State Board of Examiners in the Department of Education voted in April to accept Pinto's decision
Pinto had also coached field hockey and girls lacrosse at the school
Pinto was charged in November 2023 with first-degree aggravated sexual assault and two counts of second-degree sexual assault in connection with a long-term sexual relationship with a former student
More: Piscataway police officer charged with child sexual misconduct
The investigation began in October 2023 when the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Sex Crimes/Child Abuse Unit was notified by the Bridgewater Police Department of an anonymous email alleging an inappropriate relationship between a teacher and a former student
according to Somerset County Prosecutor John McDonald
was identified and interviewed by detectives from the Sex Crimes/Child Abuse Unit and the Raritan Borough Police Department
The former student reported engaging in a relationship with Pinto and said the relationship
turned sexual when they were between the ages of 14 and 15 and continued until the senior year of high school
In a lawsuit later filed against the school district
the victim alleged it was the "classic textbook case of the sexual grooming of a child by an adult authority figure" to physical acts of abuse
The lawsuit alleges the teacher would take the student
give her alcoholic beverages and take her to her home where they watched "The Real L
Word," a Showtime show with lesbian themes
While most of the physical acts of abuse took place at the teacher's home in Raritan Borough
most of the grooming and "emotional abuse" of the student took place on school grounds

It’s an apt description of his new album, Water Music
a beautifully mad result of a composer steeped in contemporary vocal music
The artwork alone captures the spirit of the Dec
2024 Gold Bolus release: a hodgepodge of cut out
collaged images are piled in the corner of a black and white photograph of a child playing in the ocean
it’s deadly serious and always led by the joy of musical discovery
Water Music by Paul Pinto
“Ancestor Song” starts with an infectious groove between the percussion and a synthesizer imitating a bass. This cascading melting pot lays the foundation for Paul’s voice, singing his own texts based on words by Isabel Castellvi
Paul is not necessarily a virtuoso singer in the way classical listeners are conditioned to think – he lives in a world of distinctly un-classical techniques
but it’s never a weakness; Paul knows exactly what his voice is capable of
and he exploits it to the benefit of every moment
Water Music loses a bit of energy after the undeniable forward propulsion of the first two tracks
In “Grebe Song,” low vocal harmonies are processed to create an otherworldly
but this soon gives way to an extended bit of ambient dissonance that doesn’t 100% justify the length of its stay
the slow build of “Language Song” absolutely earns its six-minute runtime
but on the heels of “Grebe Song,” the sense of creeping dread created by the track feels longer than it is in reality
Any lost momentum is quickly regained in “Golf Song (golf takes up too much land),” which begins with a real earworm of a tenor sax and oboe duet: an uptempo ostinato that slowly transforms and morphs around itself
I don’t want to give away how this is interrupted a little more than a minute in because the surprise is extremely addictive
Paul’s ability to make the listener comfortable with a musical texture before subverting our expectations (like the free jazz freakout in the first movement) is infectious
He keeps his audience on their toes without taking advantage of their trust or using those surprises as a cheap trick
“Shallow Brown,” features Paul responding to a sample of the titular folk song
The track follows a similar structure seen in the back half of “River Songs:” a minimalist texture is repeated and slowly developed
This connection wouldn’t be as evident if the two works weren’t on the same album
but repeated listens reveal some already used compositional tricks
It’s not necessarily a strike against the piece itself
but hearing and noticing a similar formal scheme can make the effect a little less exciting
Gold Bolus does not seem to have plans for a physical release of Water Music
which is disappointing since this music is so lovingly engineered and mixed
It would be great to listen to this on a high quality physical format
Water Music is a great example of functionally using the recording studio as an instrument
It’s an album that lives in the joy of creativity and exploration
stitching both the familiar and unfamiliar into a collage-like mish-mash of every tool at hand
Water Music by Paul Pinto

I write to you today to share some challenging truths about the future of diversity
equity and inclusion (DEI) at the University of Cincinnati
the federal government has effectively outlawed DEI programs and practices within government entities
If you haven’t already, please take the time to read President Trump’s Executive Order 14173 from January 21 as well as the February 14 “Dear Colleague” letter from the U.S
Department of Education Office of Civil Rights (OCR)
which calls for the elimination of DEI in higher education
these federal actions are sweeping in their scope
categorical in their conclusions and pressing in their timing
The OCR letter specifically states that we must comply with these new rules by February 28
after which OCR will begin holding noncompliant universities accountable
Ohio public and federally supported institutions like ours have little choice but to follow the laws that govern us
we will continue to work through our state and federal Government Relations channels to encourage legislators to support policies that honor the mission of public higher education
which is so essential for the development of citizens for our democracy
What does all of this mean for UC as of today
Our leaders have begun evaluating jobs and duties related to DEI and examining our DEI programming
initiatives and projects to bring all areas into compliance
we have begun removing references to DEI principles across university websites
and I am thankful for our university leaders and their teams who grasp what is at stake in this moment
We must approach this process with the thoughtfulness and thoroughness that such complex comprehensive endeavors entail
while always keeping the well-being of the people most affected at the heart of our efforts
I recognize that these decisions are weighty
and these actions are a departure from decades of established practice within academic communities
I also continue to ask for your patience and understanding as we do the hard work that will be required to unwind many years of DEI efforts under an extremely compressed timeline
We are committed to meet both our compliance obligations and our mission to provide a supportive learning and working environment where all are welcome
and we are working diligently to arrive at answers
we will share updates as information becomes available

The House recently observed a break for Eid Al-Fitr and will soon observe another break for Easter and Passover
The focus at this point in the legislative session is the two-year budget that will begin on July 1
Committees are hearing final individual bills this week
after which they will pass budget bills before the break
please plan to join me on Saturday for an important event
It was inspiring to see so many Minnesotans at the Hands Off rallies this past weekend
protesting the ways in which President Trump and Elon Musk are undermining our rights
and me for a special town hall this Saturday
The key work of this session is setting a state budget for the next two years starting on July 1
Actions at the federal level – from inflationary tariffs to the gutting of public programs and funding – are already impacting Minnesotans and our state budget
It slows expenditures in areas that are growing faster than the rate of inflation while making new investments in critical areas like education
This is a responsible approach that ensures budget stability now and into the future
helping to avoid dramatic cuts to essential services down the road
I look forward to working with Governor Walz and the Senate on a final budget agreement
committee chairs are crafting budget bills in their areas of responsibility
and Economic Development Finance & Policy Committee
Chair Baker and I appeared on Almanac to discuss this and other issues
You can click on the image below to watch the segment
I also serve as the DFL lead on the House Fraud Prevention & State Agency Oversight Committee
a role which draws on my outside work as a prosecutor
Fraud against public programs harms all of us – not least the Minnesotans who rely on these services to improve their lives
I’m proud to partner with Governor Tim Walz in advancing an anti-fraud package that recently received its third committee hearing in the House
The federal cuts and chaos cited above have now come for the U.S
The Trump administration is gutting the department as part of its plan to enact a sweeping tax cut for corporations and the ultra-wealthy
This will have dire consequences for kids in Minnesota
we know that investing in our kids is a priority
More than 860,000 students in Minnesota – including students in the St
Paul public schools – depend on stable partnerships that have existed between their school communities
the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE)
and the federal department across administrations
the investments facilitated through those partnerships have played a key role in ensuring students in Minnesota receive the support they need to learn and thrive
This will help the department to proactively plan for the state's future needs
My DFL colleagues and I are advocating for three bills in particular to protect patients
While none of these bills yet has Republican support
my DFL colleagues and I will keep trying – Minnesotans are depending on us
This session has been moving fast. Please don't hesitate to reach out anytime. The best way to reach me is generally via email. You can also contact my legislative assistant, Carl, at carl.kaase@house.mn.gov or (651) 297-8387

it’s good news that their leading goal-scorer doesn’t expect any lingering effects and should head into training camp at full health
Signed through 2027-28 at an $8.2MM cap hit
he still led the Sens in playoff scoring with a 4-3–7 line and a plus-two rating through six games
While his 0.76 points per game in the regular season were his lowest in four years
he still topped Ottawa’s roster with 29 goals and would have registered his fourth straight 30-goal campaign if not for missing 10 games
He’s never getting All-Star votes again

This evening members of my leadership team and I met with governance leaders from UC’s Faculty Senate

listening to questions and hearing concerns related to recent state and federal policy decisions
As we shared with them, there was a significant development late on Friday when a U.S. District Judge in Baltimore granted a preliminary injunction to certain aspects of two of President Trump’s executive orders that seek to end government support for programs promoting diversity
Provost Kristi Nelson and I are now working with our deans and vice presidents to adapt to reflect these developments
staff and students who have shared questions and well-reasoned concerns
and we understand there is tremendous pain and anxiety around these issues
I want you to know that while the laws that govern us may change
I believe there is great goodness in every member of our university community
and together we will successfully emerge from this time of immense change
and we will do everything in our power to provide you with an opportunity to meet your full potential as a member of the Bearcats community
but we face it knowing that we are stronger together
We know that when we treat others with equality and respect
This belief has been transformational for our institution in allowing us to achieve our collective goals
while also improving each of us individually
I recognize that when the stakes are this high
and I commit to you that we will continue to work diligently to fully understand and communicate the implications of these new policies

The makeup of the heavyweight division has been changing in recent years
led by the ascension of interim champion Tom Aspinall
a multi-tooled hyper-athlete who moves like a middleweight
but carries the devastating power synonymous with the division
Dana White’s Contender Series (DWCS) has added a handful of intriguing names to this collection
including unbeaten Brit Mick Parkin and Brazilian Tallison Teixeira
who registered a first-round stoppage win in his promotional debut at UFC 312 in Sydney last month
another member of that oncoming wave will make the walk to the Octagon for the first time
steps in against Austen Lane to kick off his UFC tenure
Get Ready For FPI 10: Card Preview, Rules, Scoring And More
“There is a next generation of heavyweights coming — that’s including Tom Aspinall
obviously — and it’s not the same as before,” said Pinto
who carries a perfect 9-0 mark into his promotional debut this weekend at the UFC APEX
“There is a new type of hybrid heavyweight that is coming up
“I tell people this all the time: heavyweights break the rules,” continued the newcomer
who represents Portugal and trains at FightZone London under the watchful eye of Stuart Austin
“Heavyweights break the rules in terms of technique and positions
but you try to double leg a heavyweight and it's just not there
you can't just get your hooks in on a back-take
“So I wanna show how I can problem solve
“I wanna be an enigma in the heavyweight division.”
In addition to wanting to be an enigma in the division

man; I want to be one of the greats,” he said
articulating his ambitions and recognizing he’s about to start down that road bringing a smile to his face
started as an amateur: I want to be one of the greats; go as far as I can
“I didn’t come this far just to get this far
While his talents inside the cage are obvious and intriguing
what really stands out about Pinto at this stage is the maturity with which he’s approaching his career and the way he thought through how to make that journey from debuting to dominating
Where some athletes believe they’re ready for the big stage before they’ve ever set foot in a cage and have convinced themselves they could take out the reigning champion in their division if given the opportunity tomorrow
Pinto has purposefully used his amateur career and the early days of his time as a professional to gain experience
mix in against different body types and styles
and cultivate a wise-beyond-his-years outlook to achieving his goals
WATCH: How Dana White Turned The UFC Into A Multibillion-Dollar Business
I was getting offered to fight in other promotions — I had agents or managers saying
‘You could go to the UFC now; they’re looking for heavyweights,’” began Pinto
breaking down the way he's looked at his career to this point and how he anticipates it serving him well going forward
and understanding — especially in the heavyweight division
and I think heavyweights struggle with this — understanding that I can’t always be the hammer
There’s always gonna be a brick house in front of me
learn how to fight as the lighter guy; I’ve gotta be the one that moves
building; getting cage time — I’ve done 25 minutes and that was a good experience for me,” he added
“I believe fighters who go to decision know how to win
but when you need to know how to win a fight
‘I’m not gonna knock this guy out; I’m gonna have to go to a decision.’ You have to push the pace
and make sure the judges can understand that
Order UFC 313: Pereira vs Ankalaev
It doesn’t matter how long it’s gonna take to get the W
Having that kind of mindset and genuinely being ready for a marathon rather than a sprint should serve Pinto well going forward
especially as the spotlight begins to get brighter
the spotlight could get cranked up in a hurry
But the Portuguese rookie is ready for that too
“I just understand it’s what I signed up for; it comes with the sport,” said Pinto
again showing he understands all the beats of the sport and is prepared for all that is about to come his way
it’s what Coach Stuart has prepared me for
so you’ve got to welcome it and understand it’s part of the process.’

Pinto returns to the site of his DWCS triumph to face off with Lane
the ex-NFL defensive lineman coming off his first victory inside the Octagon
While it hasn’t necessarily been smooth sailing for Lane since reaching the UFC
Pinto’s sensible approach and deep understanding of the ever-present threats that exist at this level
again feel like they’ll suit him well as he makes the walk for his promotional debut
READ: This Week On UFC FIGHT PASS | February 24 - March 2, 2025
"He hasn’t had the best career yet in the UFC
but he’s still dangerous and you’ve got to give the guy credit — he had a whole NFL career
and is doing it at the highest level,” he said of Lane
who was a fifth-round pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars and logged 66 tackles and three sacks in five seasons before shifting his focus to MMA just a couple months after retiring from football in 2015
“He just beat (Robelis Despaigne) that everyone was afraid of
and showed that he can still win in there.
“You have to give the guy credit: he’s dangerous
“He knows he’s fighting a younger guy and I probably have a lot more pressure than he does
so he’s just gonna go out there and do what he does
And if he’s able to deal with it well and emerge victorious
“It’s gonna mean everything,” Pinto said with a broad smile
‘I’m supposed to be here; I’ve been putting in all this work to be here.’”
UFC Returns To Montreal For The First Time In 10 Years For UFC 315
If he is successful in his first foray into the Octagon this weekend
the “slow and steady” approach he wants to take could be put to the test because a statement win from a promising
young talent could lead to expedited opportunities
forcing Pinto to choose between sticking to his guns or rolling the dice against a veteran name.
Faced with a hypothetical matchup against a Top 10 veteran
the debuting prospect once again showed why he’s one to keep close tabs on going forward
but I know that wouldn’t be a good move for me right now
“I kind of like what Sean O’Malley did: he fought the right fights
“Sometimes — and this is what’s important about the team — you’ve got to protect the fighter from himself,” he added
“Sometimes you shouldn’t take every fight.”

Councilmember Brooke Pinto held a public hearing Wednesday on components of her new Peace DC plan
SEE ALSO | Proposal to merge DC's violence interrupter programs outlines benchmarks for first year
Pinto heard from dozens of public witnesses on seven of the bills encompassed in her plan:
"It is so important that we empower our young people to succeed and there are a number of provisions in PCC that are really focused on supporting our young people," Pinto told reporters in between hearings Wednesday
"I also heard a lot of really helpful testimony on these issues today from folks saying we need to start earlier: we need to be investing in our young people before they become justice involved," she said
"And so our efforts to expand out-of-school time programming and expand the truancy pilot are also really important parts of Peace DC
to say we have to recognize that our young people at an early age need access to these supports and economic mobility and opportunity
and we shouldn't be waiting until the end
Frankie Seabron, the program manager for the nonprofit Harriet's Wildest Dreams
was among those who testified against the Pretrial Detention Amendment Act
“We have to have a different way that we're dealing with crisis response," she told 7News afterward
"We want to reduce the community's exposure to policing as a whole
By getting trained mental health crisis response people to go down to those scenes
We heavily believe in preventative measures
What are the things that we can do to prevent people from going into the carceral system in the first place?”
On Thursday, Pinto will hold a hearing for government witnesses on those same bills.
the legislative session is beginning in earnest this week
Republicans and Democrats are now sharing power
following a recent special election in Roseville that returned the House to a tie
an opportunity to gather and discuss the legislative session – and issues in Washington
The next monthly “Chat with Dave” will occur this coming Saturday
from 1:00pm to 2:30pm at Gloria Dei Church on Snelling
This is an informal chance for constituents to discuss the issues important to them
with at least 68 votes required for final passage
Even better, yesterday the new representative from Roseville was sworn in, and the House entered a 67-67 tie. The previously negotiated power-sharing agreement will now be in effect for the remainder of the 2025-2026 term
this means that almost all House committees are now co-chaired by Democrats and Republicans
with an equal number of members from both parties
The only exception is the Fraud Prevention and Agency Oversight Committee
which will continue to have a Republican chair and majority
Bipartisan support will be required both to bring bills to the House floor and on all conference committees
I remain deeply concerned by the chaos and cruelty coming from the Trump administration
Trump and Republicans in Congress are on the verge of enacting a sweeping tax cut for corporations and the ultra-wealthy
paid for by slashing federal investments in health care for children
we will need to be laser-focused on a state budget on helping working and middle-class Minnesotans
I spoke at the State Capitol before a rally against what we are seeing in Washington
It was a cold day but a fired-up crowd that will continue to demand action
Events this session are moving especially quickly. The best way to reach me is generally via email. You can also contact my legislative assistant Carl, at carl.kaase@house.mn.gov or (651) 297-8387

When Anjali Pinto began her master’s degree in nursing at UIC in 2022
she already had one career under her belt.
Pinto had worked for years as a photojournalist
and her photography appeared in national and international publications like the New York Times
She particularly enjoyed portraiture and storytelling
Yet the empathy that later led her to nursing was sometimes difficult to manage from behind the camera
“I got very easily attached to people and their stories,” Pinto said
she’ll graduate from the UIC College of Nursing’s master’s degree program for non-RNs
she’ll take board exams to become a registered nurse
What’s different about the non-RN program is that students enter with degrees in fields other than nursing
like Pinto did with her photojournalism degree
Graduates become advanced generalist nurses prepared to take leadership roles in their field
Pinto’s career change from photojournalism followed another big shift in her life
I felt like I needed to find a career that gave me more purpose and used my skills and talents,” Pinto said
because you get to be in that intimate space with people and see them through difficult circumstances or hard news
But there’s a lot more flexibility in what kind of role you take on
A friend who is a nurse practitioner encouraged Pinto to enroll at UIC
The university’s commitment to health equity and working in Chicago communities were persuasive factors
Pinto has been working intensively with Chicago migrant communities
partnered with the Chicago Department of Public Health
she helped test and vaccinate people in migrant shelters during the measles outbreak last spring
The experience led to another community health project that started in May
serving families living at migrant shelters
evaluated and implemented the project and won a Schweitzer Fellowship to support it
While working with the Outbreak Response Team
she came face to face with the needs of people living in Chicago’s migrant shelters
Seeing a four-story shelter in Pilsen that housed 2,500 people
Parents at the shelter lacked cribs for their children and babies
So Pinto focused on providing them with what she could
Partnering with the Lawndale Christian Health Center
she handed out sleep sacks for babies and gift baskets with essentials like diapers
She gave presentations on safe sleeping practices
warning against the increased risk of sudden infant death syndrome from co-sleeping
Perhaps the biggest comfort was the momentary respite she and her team provided moms who came for the presentations
“Even though they’re in this congregate living situation
many of them shared that they don’t feel like they have people they can trust,” Pinto said
they gathered a group of moms at the shelter to talk about safe sleep practices and share a hot meal
but it felt familial in a way,” Pinto said
She knows first-hand that being a mom while balancing other commitments takes a lot of work
But having her daughter see her graduate will be a reward
“I feel a lot of pride knowing that she’s going to be at my graduation,” Pinto said of her 4-year-old daughter
“That’s really meaningful to me — that I accomplished this while she was young and that she’ll know and see me as a nurse as she grows up.”

traditional pinto bean variety from Michigan State University (MSU) that exhibits good dry down at maturity and excellent canning quality
This full season maturing variety has an upright
combined with resistance to lodging and high pod placement within the plant canopy make it suitable for direct harvest production systems
The upright plant structure also contributes to avoidance of white mold
‘Charro’ is resistant to strains of bean common mosaic virus (BCMV) found in Michigan as well as rust race 31:7 but is susceptible to anthracnose and common bacterial blight
‘Charro’ produces a conventional pinto bean seed that meets industry standards for export and packaging and was rated above average in canned bean appearance in the pinto bean seed class
was developed from the cross of Eldorado/P11519
‘Eldorado’ was a high yielding upright pinto variety with good avoidance to white mold
MSU breeding line P11519 was an upright pinto derived from the variety ‘Santa Fe’ that had excellent uniform dry down at maturity coupled with good yield potential
The pedigree breeding method was used to advance the cross to the F4 generation followed by pure line selection for disease
‘Charro’ exhibits the upright type-II indeterminate short vine growth habit combined with good resistance to lodging similar to other traditional pinto bean varieties such as ‘La Paz’ and ‘USDA Rattler’ (1.6 on a 1–5 scale
Table 1) while displaying the upright architecture of the ‘Eldorado’ parent
‘ND Falcon’ was slightly more erect
while ‘Windbreaker’ lodged significantly more (3.3) making direct harvest more difficult and favoring the development of white mold
‘Charro’ plants average 21 inches in height
and ‘ND Falcon’; while ‘Windbreaker’ was much shorter at 16 inches
‘Charro’ is a full season bean
flowering in 46 days and maturing in 97 days after planting on average
The range in maturity is from 94 to 104 days
It matures 1-d later than ‘La Paz’ and 5-d later than ‘Windbreaker’
‘Charro’ exhibits similar maturity as ‘ND Falcon’ and ‘USDA Rattler’
It has a high agronomic acceptance rating due to upright plant habit
‘Charro’ has been tested for 8 years (2016-2023) in 37 locations by MSU researchers in Michigan
Canada where it appears to be broadly adapted
The combined yield data comparisons are shown in Table 1
‘Charro’ yielded 31.2 hundredweight per acre (cwt/acre) and significantly outyielded ‘La Paz’ by 7%
‘ND Falcon’ by 21% and ‘Windbreaker’ by 31%
Seed yield was not significantly different than ‘USDA Rattler’ (15%)
The yield ranged from a high of 48.5 cwt/acre in Montcalm County under irrigation and high management conditions in 2018
to a low of 22 cwt/acre in Tuscola County in 2016 under dry conditions at the Saginaw Valley Research Center (SVREC) near Frankenmuth
‘Charro’ appears well adapted across a range of environmental conditions and well suited to the narrow row, direct harvest management system commonly used in Michigan. Growers should follow current recommended practices for fertility and weed control in growing this variety. Recommendations can be found online at the SVREC site (https://www.canr.msu.edu/saginawvalley/) and at MSU Weed Science (www.msuweeds.com)
‘Charro’ possesses the single dominant I gene
which confers resistance to seed-borne BCMV
All the pinto bean varieties listed in Table 1 possess the same resistance gene
‘Charro’ exhibits resistance to bean rust race 31:7
similar to the other pinto bean varieties shown
Over eight years of field testing ‘Charro’ has exhibited moderate levels of tolerance to white mold under high fertility
in frequently irrigated trials designed to encourage disease development in Montcalm County
It has shown similar results under rainfed conditions throughout the Saginaw Valley region
‘Charro’ averaged 51% white mold infection across all locations evaluated for white mold development under conditions conducive to natural infection
Disease incidence was rated similar to ‘USDA Rattler’
slightly less than ‘ND Falcon’
and significantly lower than ‘La Paz’ and ‘Windbreaker’
‘Charro’ has a typical sized traditional pinto bean seed
with a size range from 1194 to 1008 seeds/pound (Table 1)
The seed is similar in size and color to ‘La Paz’ and ‘USDA Rattler’ and larger than ‘ND Falcon’ or ‘Windbreaker’
‘Charro’ was subjectively rated by a team of panelists as being above average in cooking quality
It was rated 4.2 on a scale of 1=very undesirable to 5=very desirable for visual appearance which was better in comparison to the other pinto varieties
‘Charro’ exhibits excellent canning quality in the traditional pinto bean market class
disease and canning characteristics of ‘Charro’ with four other pinto bean varieties over 8 years and 37 locations testing (2016-2023) in Michigan
c Yield was averaged over 38 locations from 2016 to 2023

Going into Carver-Hawkeye Arena to wrestle Iowa can be a daunting task for any wrestler
many great wrestlers have succumbed to the pressure of the crowd and the opponent
who drew motivation from losing 6-5 to Abe Assad two years ago in his first trip to Iowa City as a freshman
Pinto took care of business in what may be a contender for match of the year — an 18-11 decision over then-#6 Patrick Kennedy
“I remember the last time I was in Carver and I lost by a point — I remember the feeling,” Pinto said
I knew I really wanted to leave that place with a win knowing it might be my last time ever in Carver
It is a real special environment for all wrestlers
even the opposing team — with all the cheering and it’s just an amazing opportunity to be down there competing on the mat.”
Pinto has long considered himself a professional
so he takes that mindset and his experience wrestling on big stages with him into matches like this one
He’s a veteran who has wrestled in 84 career matches with a 63-21 career record
you have to know how to understand and handle those environments
so for me that was just another match,” Pinto said
he didn’t just see that level of professionalism out of Pinto
he saw it up and down the lineup as Nebraska narrowly dropped the dual to #2 Iowa 19-16
The #4 Huskers held a 16-9 lead after 184 pounds and never trailed in the dual until after the final bout when #21 Harley Andrews fell to #11 Ben Kueter 8-0
I was proud of how our guys handled the mental stress of wrestling at Carver-Hawkeye
I’ve had teams and I’ve seen millions of teams over the course of the last 30 to 40 years not handle it well,” Manning said
and that bodes well for being in the Big Ten finals and being in the national finals
That’s something that we’ve worked on throughout the year
so Lenny handled that well — then he just wrestled.”
Pinto started things off with an early feet-to-back
He then added another takedown to go up 10-1 early in the first period
Kennedy responded with a takedown and four near-fall of his own on the edge of the mat
Pinto went into the second period up 11-9 when the smoke cleared
Kennedy then rode Pinto out for the entire second period
but it was essentially tied 11-all with the riding time
With less than 10 seconds left in a match that looked destined for sudden victory
Pinto dug in one of his patented underhooks
snagged Kennedy’s left leg and drove through for the takedown and a full set of backpoints
I have the ability to put this guy to his back
and I know I can do it again.’ I knew he was tired
so I knew that wasn’t a factor,” Pinto said
I know the kid has good discipline in his stance and his hand fight and he keeps walking you down
kept fighting hands and staying in good position
“In the third period on the final takedown
I knew once I got my underhook and I felt him kind of sit there and relax — and that’s been one of my most dominant moves since the beginning of college — if I just send this thing one time as hard as I could
Pinto has been known for his underhook offense in college
It was honestly in college when I kind of figured it out,” Pinto said
“Guys just have more of a disciplined wrestling style coming into college
and I had to find a way to make these explosive moves — I had to come up with something where I could just run through someone
This one worked because of the whole element of surprise — like a game of playing possum where they never really know when that burst is gonna come.”
Pinto says there’s not much difference — he still doesn’t cut very much weight after trimming his body down in the fall before the season
I just trimmed down my body of extra fat I didn’t need and got to a healthier weight
It’s honestly no struggle whatsoever making 174,” Pinto said
I’m at this healthy state where I don’t even really need to worry about my weight.”
Pinto shot up and let the crowd know it with his celebration
but he wanted to make clear that the moment may have just gotten the better of him a little bit
“I hadn’t had a big win in a while and I was just excited about the moment being in Carver
but I’m always grateful for God and all my opportunities — that’s the backbone of everything I do,” Pinto said
A major boon for the Huskers this season has been the performance of redshirt freshman Christopher Minto
He’s 4-1 in Big Ten duals this season with his only loss a 5-1 decision against Iowa’s #2 Michael Caliendo
“I think Christopher did a really good job
and I think there were a couple positions where if he would have wrestled different
we could have gotten the takedown,” Manning said
He was a guy who stayed in the moment and the moment wasn’t too big.”
When you account for the fact that Minto had to beat out a top-10 guy
it makes what he’s done this season even more impressive
Minto went on to down then-#9 Andrew Sparks 5-4 in a dual and got a 7-2 win over Michigan’s #14 Beau Mantanona
“It really shows his potential and where he can go
and now we just have to be more attentive to details
We need to know where we need to go and get there a little quicker,” Manning said
“We weren’t surprised as a staff to see he was right in the mix (against Caliendo)
and he had to beat out a really tough guy in the room to do it.”
Coming out of Mariner High School in Florida
Minto was not on any of the Big Boards.
so people are starting to figure it out a little bit
but we saw something in him — particularly coach Manning saw something in him when we recruited him a few years ago,” Nebraska associate head coach Bryan Snyder said in late December.
When asked about what it was that he saw in Minto that some other programs and coaches maybe didn’t see
and I could just see the grittiness in him and the desire that ‘I want to wrestle at this level
and I’m going to do anything I need to do to get there.’ I knew he was a hard worker
so he had the characteristics that fit our model for our program — great work ethic
He’s a guy that was willing to put in the work
so he had those qualities that I saw that kids can really rise up
so it’s not really surprising to me to see him be where he is
He has a great potential to finish really high this year.”
Minto reminds him a lot of his former teammate
but his leg defense and scrambling abilities are honestly fantastic,” Pinto said
“He’s just starting to get the feel for the college scramble
but once he capitalizes a little more in the scrambles
I think guys are going to be fearful to shoot on him then
I think he’s really dangerous and is going to do some great things.”
Nebraska saw another important upset when #6 Silas Allred beat then-#5 Gabe Arnold of Iowa 4-1 in sudden victory
handing the Hawkeye his first official collegiate loss
After a brutal January when Allred dropped consecutive matches to #1 Carter Starocci
he’s now won four straight conference matches
He’s 15-3 on the year and 4-2 in Big Ten duals
“It just shows us what Silas is capable of doing
and he stepped up in a big moment which is inspiring for his future coming up in the Big Tens in a month and obviously the national tournament,” Manning said
so he’s going to have to do that three or four more times
That’s something you can keep laying bricks on and keep adding to that mindset and that mental aspect of the sport that you can do it.”

Chairwoman of the Committee on Judiciary and Public Safety
introduced a comprehensive plan Monday that aims to further reduce crime and foster sustainable peace in the District
According to a press release from Pinto's office, the Peace DC plan builds on the progress made following last year's implementation of her Secure DC bill
ALSO READ | DC Council passes Secure DC crime bill during final vote
The Peace DC plan is based on four key pillars:
"Our hope is that if we move forward with this plan
we can continue to see and build on the success that we've had as a city last year and make sure that more people can be peaceful," Councilmember Pinto told 7News
Councilmember Pinto said the program should be solely operated under ONSE
“It doesn't make sense procedurally to have a violence interruption program housed out of our local prosecutor's office," she told 7News
She said an executive agency should be responsible for violence prevention "so that we can do all of the coordination that we need if somebody is on the brink of committing a crime and we get to them early enough," she explained
"We need to have access to housing supports
Last month, a second person connected to ONSE was charged with federal bribery surrounding violence interruption contracts
At an oversight hearing following the announcement of the latest charge
Councilmember Pinto told 7News: "These particular allegations deal with contracts that were also associated with the Councilmember White incidents
and we're no longer working with those community-based organizations
They're no longer receiving government funds
And so the public should have confidence knowing that actions have already been taken to address some of these concerns."
Councilmember Pinto said the council has since built safeguards for multiple layers of review for divvying out grants
“I worked with [ONSE] to remove the middleman who was managing the grant disbursements
which to me never made sense," she said
certainly to make sure that all of these dollars are going where they need to go and that there is public trust in the efficacy of this spending.”
Among other things, the Peace DC plan would provide housing, financial and employment support for returning citizens, fund the expansion of the Department of Human Services Truancy Pilot to include DHS resources and supports to families of truant middle schoolers in addition to the existing partnership with select public high schools
and set up a pilot program to provide wraparound supports for kids in the system and follow-ups with a trusted adult in the year following a court agreement
“Our hope is that if we move forward with this plan
we can continue to see and build on the success that we've had as a city last year and make sure that more people can be peaceful," Councilmember Pinto said
“I commend the proposal's focus on improving how the District intervenes with young people in the justice system to make sure they don’t re-offend," Attorney General Brian Schwalb said of the trusted adult program in a statement to 7News
this pilot would be duplicative of many existing programs that already operate across several DC agencies
I would prefer to see the District improve coordination of our existing programs to ensure maximum effectiveness."

Nebraska wrestling three-time NCAA qualifier Lenny Pinto entered the NCAA transfer portal, per Pat Mineo. He has one year of eligibility remaining.
Pinto qualified for the NCAA Tournament in all three of his varsity seasons with the Huskers. He was a Blood Round finisher in the last two seasons, falling one win shy of the All-American podium.
Following a redshirt year, Pinto went 22-11 at 184 pounds, qualifying for the tournament in Tulsa. The following season, he went 24-6 and made it to the Blood Round.
The 2024-25 campaign was different as Nebraska shook up the lineup, dropping Pinto down to 174 pounds and 197 pounder and All-American SIlas Allred to 184. Pinto went 24-7 this past season but fell to Cornell’s Simon Ruiz in the Blood Round. Overall, Pinto is 70-24 in his career.
Now, he’ll hit the portal and explore his options for his final season. Meanwhile, Nebraska heads into next season fresh off a 2nd place finish at NCAAs behind the dynasty that is Penn State.
The Huskers had eight All-Americans, three NCAA finalists and two national champions under Mark Manning this season. Manning also joined On3 Wrestling to recap the season and dive more into the program.
