A 64-year-old German woman lost her life earlier today (Monday) after being hit by a pickup truck on Playa del Inglés beach in the south of Gran Canaria
reportedly providing services to beach kiosks

The incident occurred while the woman’s husband was in the sea
a 50-year-old man with over a decade of experience driving on sand
allegedly did not realise he had run over the woman
Beachgoers quickly alerted the authorities at 12:30pm
prompting the arrival of officers from the Local Police as well as lifeguards from the Red Cross beach rescue service
the medical personnel who arrived on the scene were unable to save the woman’s life and she succumbed to her injuries in the ambulance en route to a medical facility
The Local Police of San Bartolomé de Tirajana have opened an investigation to determine the circumstances of the accident
Preliminary reports indicate that the truck was not in the exact location of the incident when authorities arrived but was quickly found
who appeared unaware of the fatal accident
was taken to the police station for further questioning
Authorities will investigate whether the vehicle was operating within the designated pathways and during the permitted hours
are authorised to drive on the sand only during specific hours
Other than emergency vehicles like police and Red Cross units
these service trucks are restricted to prevent such accidents

The Local Police of San Bartolomé de Tirajana
have discovered six blocks of hashish hidden under a staircase at the Kasbah Shopping Centre in Playa del Inglés
The discovery was made during a routine patrol Saturday by "Peka," a specially trained police dog
The incident occurred at approximately 1:30am while officers were patrolling on foot along Avenida de Tenerife
Peka abruptly stopped under one of the access staircases and signalled the presence of narcotics
officers uncovered six pieces of a brown substance with a distinct odour
each measuring about 4.5 centimetres in length
Police believe the hashish was stashed under the staircase by local drug dealers involved in small-scale operations in the area
This discovery highlights the ongoing efforts of the police to combat drug distribution in popular tourist zones like Playa del Inglés
Investigations are continuing to identify those responsible for the hidden narcotics
A 67-year-old woman tragically drowned on Thursday at Playa del Inglés
The incident occurred at 12:35pm at the beach in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana
according to the Canary Islands emergency services (1-1-2)
Red Cross lifeguards pulled the woman from the water after noticing signs of drowning
and emergency resources were sent to the beach to assist
paramedics continued the cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) efforts initiated by the Red Cross team
The National Police has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident
Caravan enthusiasts in Gran Canaria are preparing to stage a protest this Saturday
in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana
organised by the Platform for Autonomous Motorhomes (PACA)
who has rallied support from up to 300 motorhome owners
The protest aims to highlight the lack of designated overnight parking areas
and dedicated caravan spaces both inside and outside the town centre
Gallardo claims the caravan community faces ongoing discrimination in the municipality
citing fines and a lack of basic infrastructure as key concerns
He is calling for fair regulation to ensure that motorhome tourism
an increasingly popular form of travel in the Canary Islands
is properly supported rather than penalised
While he praised the openness of Alejandro Marichal
he expressed disappointment with Mayor Marco Aurelio Pérez
Gallardo accuses him of failing to provide concrete answers
claiming that Pérez stated there were no suitable areas available for caravan parking
PACA has decided to proceed with the demonstration
which would have passed through busy tourist areas such as Playa del Inglés
and Meloneras, has been altered due to police concerns about traffic disruptions at the beginning of the Easter holiday period
The demonstration will now begin at 11:00am near the funeral home in Castillo del Romeral and will follow the GC-500 road in the direction of Mogán
stopping short of the El Pajar neighbourhood
Mayor Pérez has rejected claims of discrimination
stating that caravans are already present in several areas of the municipality
He also added that private land could be a viable option and encouraged motorhome owners to negotiate agreements directly with landowners for overnight stays
municipal sources have indicated that efforts are underway to identify suitable spaces that comply with safety and urban planning requirements
suggesting that a longer-term solution may yet be found
As tensions rise between caravan owners and local authorities
Saturday’s protest is expected to serve as both a demonstration of solidarity within the motorhome community and a call for more inclusive tourism policies in southern Gran Canaria

Get to know Gran Canaria
with this first-timer's guide © Maremagnum / Getty Images
Ross Clarke has recently returned from Gran Canaria where he was researching for the upcoming Canary Islands guidebook (publishing November 2024)
Here he creates the ultimate guide to help you start planning your vacation to the Canaries' third-largest island
When you fly into Gran Canaria or traverse its coastline by boat to dock at one of its ports
you instantly understand why this island has captivated and intrigued people for centuries
It’s been given the nickname of "the continent in miniature" due to its diverse terrain
and "the land of eternal spring" for its climate
The original inhabitants before the Spanish named it "Tamaran," and their legacy can be seen across the island in remains of their cave dwellings and artefacts
Gran Canaria is the middle child of the archipelago, having sprung up from the ocean floor about 14 million years ago. It is often compared to its neighbor, Tenerife
but each of the islands has its own merits
Most people will know Gran Canaria for its beaches and resorts, particularly Maspalomas in the south that encompasses the popular spot of Playa del Inglés
And while the beaches and sunny weather are spectacular
there’s much more to this beautiful island than sand
For many years, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria held the title for the city with the best climate in the world
This is because the capital enjoys a temperate year-round climate with little rain and rarely scorching temperatures
crisp and fresh temperatures in its mountainous center
Gran Canaria is incredibly popular for winter sun
and beaches can be busy with tourists even in January – although you’re unlikely to spot a Canarian sunbathing until after April
Winter also plays host to several celebrations
including one of the world’s largest carnivals in February
These more-than-week-long celebrations take over the whole island and there are parties
Summer also gets busy when the mercury can hit 30°C (86°F)
with more than 60km (37 miles) of beaches around the island’s coast
you can usually find a spot on the sand to soak up some rays
Autumn and spring can be good times to visit
places less busy and temperatures ideal for exploring and sightseeing
Gran Canaria is both ideal for an exciting city break over a long weekend
a week-long beach holiday or an extended stay
it’s one of the most popular places for remote workers looking to balance work with the laid-back island lifestyle
which were worshipped by the island’s original pre-Hispanic inhabitants
The old town of Vegueta and Triana is also worth a visit to wander the historic streets and museums
which covers both international and domestic flights
It’s easy to get from the airport to all major resorts by bus
The bus network is extensive and reaches all parts of the island. Buses are inexpensive and reliable and run by Guaguas Global. In the capital, you’ll see yellow buses. These run the length and breadth of the city and are operated by Guaguas Municipales
Car hire is a great way to explore the island. Prices are generally good value although can peak during busy periods so it’s advisable to book ahead. Try using a local company if you can such as Cicar or Tirma
You could easily drive the circumference of the island in a single day
but it’s worth taking your time and planning journeys in advance so you don’t miss anything
Make sure to fill up with fuel before heading inland
winding mountain roads can deplete reserves quicker than you think
you can catch ferries and high-speed catamarans to neighboring islands including Tenerife
There are two very famous monoliths in the center of the island, both of which are worth a visit. The Roque Nublo is the more famous
standing at a height of 80m (262ft) and soaring nearly 2000m (6561ft) above sea level
The trek to the rock is relatively easy and takes about 30–40 minutes
Alternatively, try climbing to the Roque Bentayga
This was the last point of defence for the island’s original inhabitants
and it’s easy to see why as it stands on a plinth with views of the surrounding sunken volcanic crater
there are carvings and holes in the stone that are still a mystery to historians
and in Gran Canaria you’re spoilt for choice
from craft and artisan pop-ups to food and agriculture
that I used to go to regularly when I lived in Las Palmas
is the weekend market in Vega de San Mateo
There are two giant warehouses that are full to the brim with stall holders
One is for crafts and but the other (which is my favorite) is the agricultural one
I love nosing at the stalls and chatting to the stallholders who often give you little taster of their baked goods or let you sniff spices
There is usually a stall selling truchas de batata – sweet potato pasties – that I devour in an instant
It’s also a good place to pick up non-touristy souvenirs such as seeds
My other favorite is the weekend market at Teror
This town is famous for two things: the church dedicated to the island’s patron saint
You’ll find countless stalls selling bocadillos (rolls as big as your head) slathered in chorizo de Teror and fresh cheese
Gran Canaria can be relatively cheap if you avoid the obvious tourist traps
The currency is the Euro (€) and most places take credit and debit cards
Over recent years cash has been on a decline
but it’s worth carrying some Euros in case you need them
especially in less touristic and developed areas
Self-catering apartment (including Airbnb): €75–100 per night
and you’ll find families socialize together from grandparents to babies until all hours
And don’t be surprised if Canarios talk to your children before they speak to you – the island is extremely family friendly
Gran Canaria is one of the most popular destinations for the LGBTIQ+ community. The island and islanders are incredibly open, and it is a safe environment to be yourself. Each year there is a famous Winter Pride in Playa del Inglés, centered around the Yumbo Centrum – the world’s only LGBTIQ+ shopping center – where you’ll find bars, shops, restaurants and clubs.
Some days in Gran Canaria, you might find that the air is very hot and yet it’s foggy or misty. This is known as the calima – the hot winds that blow over from the nearby Sahara Desert carrying sand dust in the air. While it won’t hurt you, it can make temperatures and being outside unpleasant.
Nightlife in Gran Canaria's popular tourist areas
continues to generate complaints and concerns from residents and holidaymakers
While noise problems have long been a primary issue
a new controversy has emerged: the presence of minors in nightclubs selling alcoholic beverages
In a police operation during the early hours of Sunday morning
the National Police identified 42 minors at two nightclubs in the bustling Plaza de Maspalomas shopping centre in Playa del Inglés
a key area in Maspalomas within the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana
while another 34 were discovered in a second establishment
Laws state that people aged 16 and 17 can be waiters and waitresses but no-one under the age of 18 is legally allowed to pour or sell alcoholic drinks
which took place between 2:15am and 4:45am
was part of a broader initiative aimed at targeting drug trafficking and substance abuse
This issue of underage staff adds to the long-standing problem of noise pollution from Maspalomas' nightlife venues
Nearby hotels and residents frequently lodge complaints about loud music and disturbances that continue into the early hours
further complicating the area's reputation as a tourist destination
Authorities recently closed two clubs in the same area following complaints from a local hotel and nearby residents
these closures have not resolved all concerns
as other establishments continue to operate without adequately meeting noise regulations
The situation highlights the tension between maintaining a vibrant nightlife scene to attract holidaymakers and ensuring compliance with legal and social norms to protect community well-being
Local authorities are under increasing pressure to enforce stricter regulations and carry out more frequent inspections to address these dual challenges
Efforts to mitigate these issues will likely require enhanced collaboration between the police
and the local government to ensure Maspalomas remains an attractive yet orderly destination for visitors and residents alike
A BRIT tourist has died after being put in a martial arts chokehold known as the "Lion Killer" while on a night out in Gran Canaria
Spanish police have arrested a 32-year-old suspect after he allegedly put the holidaymaker in the grapple
Police believe there was a confrontation between the Brit
and the man - understood to be a bar worker - which led to the choke
The brutal hold has the aggressor wrapping their arms around the victim's neck and their legs around their waist
It is used in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and is called the Mata Leao in Portuguese
Detectives had originally dismissed the death as drugs-related - but today revealed they are treating it as a homicide
Cops confirmed they were called after the tourist's lifeless body was found on the ground in Playa del Ingles.
Do you know what happened? WhatsApp The Sun on 07741 005808 or email henry.holloway@thesun.co.uk
They originally thought he had died of a drug-related heart attack - but then found suspicious marks on his neck.
The Brit is said to have been "agitated" before the confrontation
A spokesman for National Police in San Bartolome de Tirajana said: “Officers have arrested a 47-year-old man who has no police record as the suspected author of a crime of homicide
“In the early hours of July 27 an emergency call was received saying a person was lying lifeless on the ground near a nightspot in Playa del Ingles
“Several police units responded along with other emergency services
“Investigators began to gather information from witnesses and staff as well as friends and the partner of the dead man."
Cops went on: “Marks were observed on his neck and his body was transported to the island’s Institute of Forensic Medicine for further analysis
“Several witnesses told police they had seen how one of the members of staff had carried out a chokehold known as a Mata leao because the British man he performed it on was very agitated
“When he was immobilised he collapsed on the ground
“CCTV cameras were then analysed and evidence obtained showing an employee of the nightspot grabbing the victim by the neck before he fell to the floor
“The forensic report corroborated the cause of death as asphyxia
“Given the risk the suspected killer could abscond
a search operation was put in place and once he was located the suspect was immediately arrested
“He was subsequently remanded to a local jail on the orders of an investigating magistrate.”
The suspect appeared in court in a closed hearing and was remanded in prison

Being the number one destination in Europe for winter sun with millions heading to the archipelago to escape the cold of their own country
means that the Canary Islands also attracts some unwelcome guests in the form of pickpockets
These opportunist thieves who take advantage of unaware tourists not taking as much care as they normally would do whilst on their holidays
Social media is full of people complaining and warning about their presence in various holiday resorts
who spend summer in other resorts across Spain and Europe
come here every winter and also target rent-a-cars
particularly when parked in isolated areas at tourist hotspots
taking high-value items left inside in just a few minutes
Every year the police advise and warn people to be more careful by not carrying much money on them
not having PIN numbers and cards in wallets
being attentive to any strangers approaching them for any reason
People are constantly complaining that the authorities don’t do anything about the pickpockets
as they have seen them back on the streets after being arrested by the police
the police have also complained that they are powerless to do anything unless they are caught in the act
In 2022 a new law was passed that gave them more power to charge them
as the ‘value amount of possession’ was lowered to make it easier for them to be arrested
which now includes prison sentences of up to 18 months for petty theft for re-offenders
was introduced in August 2022 in response to the demands by sectors such as tourism
which is especially tainted by this scourge
Pickpockets targeted Spain and the Canary Islands as they were aware of the loopholes in the law knowing they could ‘get away’ with it
which has always angered residents of the islands who have posted photos of pickpockets in action on social media asking why the police don’t do anything when in reality they have been powerless
section 2 of article 234 of the Penal Code was modified to give "an adequate response to cases of multiple recidivism"
It is explained that the reform is "necessary" because
although the previous regulation already provided for an aggravated modality for repeat theft
according to Supreme Court doctrine this was intended to punish thefts that exceeded 400 euros
This interpretation of the Supreme Court doctrine
supposed that the minor crimes of theft that are committed by a multi-repeat offender "do not have a sufficient criminal response
even though they are of growing concern for directly affecting not only tourism
and the economy in general but also to the safety of citizens”
this meant that the criminals were aware of the 400 euros limit
no matter how many times they were taken to court
they practically entered through one door and exited through the other
But now minor thefts can be punished more severely
The BOE states that to avoid the disproportionate jump in sentence
it is decided to increase the sentence for these minor thefts
but without reaching the aggravated prison sentence of article 235.1 of the Penal Code
in cases of minor theft of less than 400 euros
the penalty is applied for repeat offenders taking into account the combined total amount they have stolen
and gives the police more incentive to arrest them and the courts more power to charge them accordingly
located on the south coast of Gran Canaria
is set to increase its accommodation offerings with the conversion of the Grupotel Jardín del Sol apartment complex into a four-star hotel
The transformation will be carried out under a new brand
following an investment of €4.8 million
aims to upgrade the current two-key apartment complex into a luxury hotel
with construction and transition set to take four years to complete
Currently offering 108 accommodation units with a capacity for 324 guests
the complex will be reconfigured to provide 336 guest beds
A newly designed commercial area and multinational event spaces for leisure activities are also part of the project
“The approval of this licence marks a key step in the City Council's commitment to modernising our tourism infrastructure.”
added that the renovation not only enhances the local tourism sector but also aligns with the municipality's broader strategy of upgrading existing accommodations to position ‘Maspalomas Costa Canaria’ as a premier
there are sandy beaches and restaurant-lined fishing harbours here
lush valleys blooming with unique plant life
volcanic badlands strewn with lava boulders

The alert has been issued in holiday hotspots including Tenerife and Lanzarote
Holidaymakers heading to the Canary Islands are being urged to stay vigilant as pickpocketing is reportedly "rife" across the Spanish archipelago. This warning comes in response to a surge of complaints about the presence of thieves in popular resorts throughout the islands, according to Canarian Weekly.
as they attract more tourists compared to mainland Spain and other European resorts
especially those parked in secluded areas at tourist attractions
making off with any high-value items left inside
two off-duty officers apprehended two men accused of stealing a wallet containing €300 from a pair of tourists in Playa de Las Americas

a new law was enacted that empowers authorities to take stronger action against these criminals
The 'value amount of possession' threshold was lowered
making it easier for perpetrators to be arrested
A reform of the Penal Code now includes prison sentences of up to 18 months for petty theft for re-offenders
This was introduced following demands by the tourism sector which is significantly impacted by the crime
criminals who were aware of loopholes in the law and found to have stolen less than €400 could essentially "get away with it" and not be punished for the crime
changes to the Penal Code mean that in cases of theft of less than €400
repeat offences will be looked at for the combined amount they have stolen rather than the individual amount each time
This gives police "more incentive to arrest them and the courts more power to charge them accordingly."

The first thing that struck me as I arrived in Gran Canaria was the spinning white blades that dotted the horizon
I later learnt that these wind turbines generate 20 per cent of the island’s energy
Erase the image of crowded beaches full of ‘fly and flop’ tourists from your mind
The Gran Canaria I discovered rivals the big European capitals for culture
Gran Canaria is the third largest Canary Island and it rotates with Fuerteventura and Lanzarote to be the capital of the province
Holidaymakers tend to book their holiday to just one of the Canary Islands and stay put. This is a shame, because it’s quick and easy to travel between the seven islands. There are ferries between some of them and flights between almost all of them
I travelled to Gran Canaria from Fuerteventura. There are a few different ferry routes, depending on where on the islands you travel to and from
but I took the 2-hour Fred Olsen Express service
If you’re travelling from outside Spain, there are direct flights from many European countries to Gran Canaria. The majority of tourists on the island come from the UK, Germany and Scandinavia
You’ll land at Las Palmas de Gran Canaria airport, the only one on the island. From there, it’s an easy 40-minute drive along well signposted highways to the beach resorts in the south, or 15 minutes to the capital city
The capital of Gran Canaria is Las Palmas de Gran Canaria - not to be confused with Las Palmas
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria’s main beach is Las Canteras. It has previously been voted one of Spain’s best beaches and it’s not hard to see why
City beaches tend to be a bit dirty and overcrowded
as the only places for city dwellers to flock to on a sunny day
We were there on a warm Sunday afternoon and many locals were out for a walk or lunch
To understand the history of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
This is where the Castillian army landed in 1478
leading to battles here between the natives and the colonisers
The Spanish named the first settlement Real de Las Palmas and it’s from that the town of Vegueta was born
Vegueta was one of the highlights of our trip so don’t miss out on it
In a very Mediterranean way, food and drink is highly revered in Gran Canaria
You don’t eat to live here - it’s very much the other way round
There is an abundance of produce grown or made here and it is all done with care and love
To really understand the difference this makes to quality and taste, you must seek out local produce. Gran Canaria is not the place to do a big supermarket shop on arrival. Seek out local food markets and small grocery shops
Not only will they be run by friendly locals who are passionate about the food on sale
they’ll also be happy to give you recommendations
Their produce is likely to be grown in the surrounding areas - and this will come through in the taste
As part of our tour with Guillermo Bernal we visited two places where love and care for food really shone through
there’s guaranteed to be a bottle doing the rounds
On a visit to the distillery, you’re taken on a journey through the history of rum
there’s quality testing at every step of the process and it’s all overseen by a rum master- an enviable job title if ever I heard one
My favourite part of the tour was the galleries of rum casks
many of them signed by famous people who have visited
The tour ends with a tasting session. The distillery makes 15 different products, all with a unique flavour. You can take home a bottle or two as a souvenir
The Arehucas experience takes 45 minutes and tours run Monday to Friday year-round
Sugar cane harvesting takes place in March so if you want to see the rum factory in full swing
don’t miss out on a walk around the local town of Arucas where the famous rum gets its name from
This small hilltop town is full of colonial architecture and has gorgeous views down to the sea
It’s pleasant to wander its winding streets and admire the interesting trees and plants in its small municipal park
The architectural gem of Arucas is the Church of San Juan Bautista. Its elaborate design means it’s often mistaken for a cathedral and it’s clear from the style who the architect studied with - none other than Gaudi
a traditional ‘finca’ house has been lovingly restored to create a beautiful focal point for the surrounding 7,000 banana plants
The fascinating attraction opened just a few years ago
A visit to Hacienda La Rekompensa includes a tour of the plantation where they grow 13 different varieties of banana
We were shown around by a guide with such passion for bananas and the growing process that I left with a new appreciation for this everyday fruit
Sat in a sunny courtyard with other visitors
we tried different varieties of banana as well as a jam and chutney - served on cheese
This may sound like a strange combination but trust me
Tours of Hacienda La Rekompensa take 1 hour and can be booked online
Where to book your accommodation really depends on what you want out of your trip
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is perfect for exploring the city and experiencing all the cultural and food highlights
If you want to be close to nature and you’re not bothered about being near the sea
Tejeda in the centre of the island is perfect
To be close to the beach and lively nightlife
This area isn’t short on hotels and holiday apartments but we stayed in the sustainably-minded Bohemia Suites and Spa
Rather than building a new hotel from scratch
the owners of this hotel refurbished and refitted a pre-existing building
Not that you would know its age from the fresh and modern design and decor
best displayed in the 360° panoramic restaurant on the top floor
This is the literal icing on the cake and the whole level was a smart new addition to the old hotel
The circular room has incredible views over Playa del Ingles
the Maspalomas dunes and the blue sea beyond
Breakfast is also served in the restaurant
There is a buffet as well as hot dishes made to order
the loose leaf tea station was a highlight
If you just want to have a drink, Atelier Cocktail Bar, part of the restaurant, has an amazing outdoor terrace which makes for the best rooftop bar in Gran Canaria. Both the restaurant and cocktail bar are open to the public as well as hotel guests
with bright colours and lots of light throughout
Bohemia caters to everyone from holidaymakers to remote workers, but it’s worth noting that it’s adults only. The studios and junior suites are very well set up for digital nomads thanks to the kitchen and dining table to work at
What particularly stood out to me at Bohemia was how often I was asked for my feedback
Most hotels do this but here they really seem to act on it
As an example, rooms used to be equipped with iMacs, intended for working on or watching TV. But when feedback told them guests didn’t know how to use the computers, they replaced them with smart TVs. This kind of care and attention shows they put time and money into ensuring their guests have as relaxing and stress-free a stay as possible
I left Gran Canaria with a strong sense of how it got to where it is today; all the influences that have shaped the culture
The island has left behind the extractive tourism that has blighted many parts of Europe for decades
you’ll find a vibrant and varied island that’s full of people who can’t wait to show you their home
Ruth Wright was a guest of Gran Canaria and Bohemia Suites and Spa. For more information on the island, visit www.grancanaria.com
It may just be the convenience ― because after a (sometimes testing) flight with kids
who wouldn’t love a speedy 35-minute transfer to the beach resorts of the south coast
among the water parks and departing dolphin-watching boat trips
that you’ll find everything from the buzzy beach vibes of Playa de Ingles to the more serene stretches of Puerto de Mogan
there’s the natural beauty of a protected landscape: think long sweeps of sand and golden dunes; nearby in Meloneras you can settle into some of the island’s most luxurious hotels
complete with kids’ clubs and spas; in the northern capital of Las Palmas you’ll find one of the world’s best urban beaches ― perfect for an evening stroll
But there’s more to this 29-mile-long island than cool coastal hangouts: head inland and you’ll discover beautifully decorated boutique hotels
giving your family holiday an entirely different vibe

La Gomera is also home to several nudist beaches and it is actually quite a popular destination for naturists looking to visit the archipelago
just like in the rest of the Canary Islands and Spain.
Although you can't sunbathe nude on town beaches
the great thing about the Canary Islands is that they have a lot of wild beaches that are accessible where you can get away from the crowds
although La Gomera is not quite as popular among naturists as Fuerteventura or Gran Canaria
you will be surprised at just how many nudist beaches there are in La Gomera
an island that is much smaller compared to the rest of the Canaries
there are more nudist beaches in La Gomera than there are in La Palma
La Gomera is truly a paradise for naturists visiting the island as they have lots of options and most of these beaches are located in beautiful landscapes like ravines that end in a natural protected cove
Playa del Inglés is a 400 meters long beach with black volcanic sand
Playa del Ingles is one of the most appreciated beaches in La Gomera
being easily accessible since it is located just 2 km away from the tourist town of Valle Gran Rey
Playa del Ingles is not only the most popular nudist beach in La Gomera
but it's also a fantastic place to visit to see one of the most amazing sunsets on the island
La Caleta de Hermigua is the only beach with a naturist tradition on the island's north coast
Although it's not located in an urban setting
it still offers cleaning services and showers
The waves here tend to be moderate to strong
in contrast to the typically calmer southern beaches
This beach offers spectacular views of the island of Tenerife
Located close to the island's capital San Sebastián de La Gomera
this beach is 500 meters long and 70 meters wide
Playa La Guancha is not only regarded as one of the best nudist beaches in La Gomera, but also one of the best nudist beaches in the Canary Islands archipelago
And despite being located so close to San Sebastián de La Gomera it is usually not crowded and also very clean.
The beach also offers beautiful beaches over the island's capital
as well as gorgeous views of Mt Teide in Tenerife
CANARY Island beach workers are set to plunge four tourist hotspots into jeopardy with strikes this summer
Thousands of Brits could now be left without sunbeds and umbrellas in the San Bartolomé de Tirajana region of Gran Canaria, Spain
as staff protest about their precarious working conditions
An indefinite strike will begin on Saturday, June 8, meaning popular beaches like Playa del Inglés, El Cochino, Maspalomas, and Meloneras are all at risk of having no staff on site, the Canarian Weekly report
a company who employs the workers but saw their service contract expire in 2011
The Federation of Canary Islands Trade Unions (FSC) and the FSOC have expressed their frustration over more than a year and a half of failed talks with the company
They have issued a statement explaining the strike is a result of prolonged negotiations without coming to an agreement
Local authorities remain hopeful of finding a solution to the dilemma
the municipal councillor overseeing this area
confirmed that the local government is considering increasing payments to Perfaler SL to help support better wages for the workers
and might not be enough to prevent further conflict
There is now a real concern over how this rocky start to the summer season could impact the area
The outcome of this dispute will be closely watched by both locals and visitors
Each year it appears that there aren't enough sunbeds to go around and the protests could be set to cause carnage never seen before
A WAVE of anti-tourist measures are being implemented across Europe to curb mass tourism in popular holiday hotspots
Overcrowding has become the main problem in many sunny destinations
with authorities trying to find a solution to keep tourists and locals happy
Officials have attempted to reduce the impact of holidaymakers by implementing additional taxes on tourists, or banning new hotels
Earlier this year Venice became the first city in the world to charge an entry fee for holidaymakers after it started charging day-trippers €5 (£4.30) if visiting the historical Italian centre
It was followed by an area in Barcelona which resorted to removing a well-used bus route from Apple and Google Maps to stop crowds of tourists from using the bus
Meanwhile, San Sebastián in the north of Spain
limited the maximum number of people on guided visits to 25 to avoid congestion
The city has already banned the construction of new hotels.
The Spanish government has allowed restaurants to charge customers more for sitting in the shade in Andalucia
as swimming in the sea between midnight and 7am could cost a whopping £1,000
The Canary Islands are also considering adopting measures to regulate the number of visitors - and charge tourists a daily tax
Greece has already enforced a tourist tax during the high season (from March to October) with visitors expected to pay from €1 (£0.86) to €4 (£3.45) per night
Officials in Santiago de Compostela in Galicia want to introduce a fee for travellers to remind people to be courteous during their trips
There are already fears that this summer will see the worst towel wars yet as hotels across holiday hotspots are bracing for sun-seeking tourists fighting for a spot by the pool
Last summer there was a huge rise in scraps over sunbeds with holidaymakers rushing to place their towels on loungers first thing in the morning
Two tourists in Spain have already been slammed for the "selfish" method to save their beds
The image posted on Facebook shows two tourists lying on at least three deckchairs each
piled on top of each other and covered in towels
It comes as anti-tourist protests run rife across Spanish holiday hotspots
Earlier this week, hordes of anti-tourist protesters took over Majorca's beaches in the latest efforts to squeeze out foreigners
Pictures showed families and other locals gathered under umbrellas covered in the slogan "Ocupem Les Nostres Platges"
which translates into: "We occupy our beaches"
In an effort to battle the increased flocks of tourists heading to the Balaerics this summer, British cops are set to be deployed to help reinforce police stations across the islands
Holidaymakers from the British Isles are expected to rock up in their numbers in Majorca over the next few months
despite the increased amount of anti-tourist protests
San Bartolomé de Tirajana faces a rocky start to its summer season as beach workers from popular spots like Playa del Inglés, El Cochino, Maspalomas, and Meloneras have announced an indefinite strike starting on June 8th.
The employees, who manage sunbeds and umbrellas on the beaches, are employed by Perfaler, a company whose service contract expired in 2011, have decided collectively to protest about their precarious working conditions.
The Federation of Canary Islands Trade Unions (FSC) and the FSOC have issued a statement explaining the strike is a result of prolonged negotiations without coming to an agreement. They have expressed their frustration over more than a year and a half of failed talks with Perfaler SL, demanding updates to their working conditions to meet current legal standards.
- Updating the terms of the previous agreement to align with current legislation.
- Providing additional training to prepare for organisational and technological changes anticipated with the new service tender.
- Improving social conditions such as work hours, wage adjustments, work-life balance, and internal promotion opportunities.
Yilenia Vega, the municipal councillor overseeing this area, remains hopeful for a resolution. She says that the local government has mediated the conflict and is considering increasing payments to the company to support better wages for the workers, though this increase will need to be gradual.
However, the situation remains tense as the strike date approaches, threatening to disrupt the summer season for tourists in one of Gran Canaria's most popular destinations. The outcome of this dispute will be closely watched by both locals and visitors.
In 1981, I was a holiday rep in Playa del Ingles. My first trip back did not impress my daughters. The resort had faded, says Barbara Scully
so I was on the brink of madness when I announced to ‘himself’ that I needed sun
I wasn’t taking any chances on finding that sunshine
Early June weather could still be inconsistent in southern Europe
We needed to head further south — the Canaries were the best bet and would be within budget
My teenage daughters looked at me sceptically
They are aware of my penchant for booking cottages in the middle of nowhere
“Gran Canaria was where I used to work back in the ’80s
where I used to live.” The girls had left the room
as I fell into my memories of the winter of 1981/2
when I spent four months working as a holiday rep for JWT
we landed into Las Palmas airport and I set foot back on the island of Gran Canaria for the first time in 30 years
in the Blue Bay Beach Club (a good recommendation from my travel agent)
which is the name given to the development around the original resort of Playa del Ingles
Bahia Feliz has a kind of funky Moroccan feel to it
we slightly overdid our first day in the sun and so
I took time away from the pool and the sunbeds and began my rediscovery of Playa del Ingles
I was very excited as I told the taxi man to take us to the Tanife Apartments
“That’s where the Copper Kettle bar and restaurant used to be,” I said to my family
“It was like our second home and I lived in an apartment just down the road.”
I saw what can only be described as a look of pity on my girls’ faces
The Tanife — with the Copper Kettle long gone — looked like a tired old apartment block
akin to something one might find in a Moldovian suburb
which I used when herding busloads of clients
I cheerily urged my little family along to our next stop..
“It’s just down this road a wee bit,” I said as I strode forward
that’s where your granny stayed when she came to visit.” Silence
as my eyes scoured the horizon for a landmark that might guide me back towards the centre of the resort
Right there is one of the problems with Playa del Ingles
most of the activity revolved around a very lively shopping centre
which was run-down and slightly malevolent looking
We wandered in among tacky shops and boarded-up units as my heart sank further and further
right in the centre of The Kasbah was ‘Morgan with his Organ’ leading an old-time dancing session
My daughters’ pity for their mother’s illusions was complete
We hailed a taxi and headed back to the safety of Happy Bay
where I found the apartment block where I had lived
We also visited the site of the former Shamrock Bar (where we held JWT’s information meetings) and The Hawaiin Tasca pub
where all the Irish holiday reps met after the airport duty on a Sunday
We sat about reading our letters from home and sharing the news
Suffice to say that Playa del Ingles is like me
I guess — saggy and baggy and has definitely seen better days
While Playa del Ingles is a tired-looking resort with little to recommend it
a ten-minute taxi ride will take you to the shiny new resort of Las Meloneras
sea-cliff walk links two new stylish shopping centres
with a fine selection of nice restaurants and good shopping
There are nice apartment complexes and a small
Spanish-style shopping centre with supermarket
a reasonable selection of family restaurants and an amusement arcade

A 74-year-old man died yesterday (Tuesday) from drowning while swimming off a beach in Playa del Inglés in the south of Gran Canaria
as reported by the Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES)
They received an emergency 1123 call at 12.45pm informing that a bather needed assistance as he had signs of drowning and had been rescued from the water and was trying to be revived
When medical personnel arrived at the beach
they confirmed that the man was in cardiorespiratory arrest
and they continued with basic and advanced resuscitation manoeuvres
but he didn’t respond and they could only confirm his death
First reports indicate that the man is a 74-year-old German tourist
but his body has been taken for autopsy and official identification
The National Police have dismantled four more drug distribution points hiding behind the guise of being cannabis clubs in Las Palmas and San Playa del Inglés in Gran Canaria, arresting 14 people charged with committing crimes against public health in the process.
Authorities became aware of drugs being sold illegally within these clubs, which were operating as "Cannabis Associations", as they were allegedly selling marijuana and hashish to consumers and allowing them to be taken outside the premises, which is prohibited.
The investigations, carried out by the National Police in Maspalomas and the Provincial Judicial Police confirmed that these clubs were indeed selling drugs illegally, primarily hashish and marijuana.
After obtaining the necessary search and entry warrants, they raided four locations: two in Las Palmas and two in Playa del Inglés. The raids resulted in the seizure of:
- Cookies and gummies containing the psychoactive substance THC (tetrahydrocannabinol)
- Various tools for dispensing and consuming drugs
As a result, 14 people responsible for the four clubs were arrested and charged with crimes against public health. They have been placed at the disposal of the competent judicial authority.
The operation was conducted as part of the National Plan against Criminal Activities associated with the production and trafficking of marijuana, in collaboration with the G.O.I.A. unit of the local police in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

In Spain, same-sex marriage is legal, and there are anti-discrimination laws. According to Hello Canary Islands, it's "one of the most important LGBTQ destinations in the world."

I saw hotels that were tailored to the LGBTQ+ community with drag shows and pride events. There are lots of gay bars

the sand has been more of a protagonist than ever in Playa del Inglés
one of the main tourist destinations in the south of Gran Canaria
Not only has the promenade been reclaimed by the sand of the Maspalomas Dunes

This can be seen in the images shared by Pedro José Franco López on Facebook

A judge has ordered the immediate imprisonment of an employee of a nightclub in the Canary Islands
who is accused of killing a customer who was causing an altercation
by restraining him using the “mataleón” technique
which is more commonly known as a headlock in English
The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of July 27th at a club in Playa del Ingles in the south of Gran Canaria
according to a press release issued today (Wednesday) by the Canary Islands Police Headquarters
which confirmed that the deceased was a British tourist
that a person was lying on the ground with no signs of life close to a nightclub
where they confirmed that the victim had died
officers began to gather information from witnesses
plus friends and the wife of the deceased British man
Initial police investigations suggested that the cause of death was a heart attack
he had been drinking and had taken drugs during the evening
because there were marks on the victim’s neck
his body was taken to the Forensic Anatomical Institute for analysis
while several witnesses told the agents that one of the employees of the establishment had put the man in a headlock to restrain him
a story that the agents confirmed when they analysed the establishment's security cameras and that the forensic report confirmed the death by asphyxiation
Given the risk of the alleged perpetrator fleeing
a search operation was activated which enabled him to be located
arrested and brought before the judicial authorities
