Aussie Jess Gardiner endured a somewhat up-and-down start in the opening round of the Women’s FIM Enduro GP World Championship in Puerto Lumbreras at the GP AMV Seguros of Spain on the weekend
Racing for the Outsiders Yamaha Racing – Team Enduro
who described the round as a “tough weekend” as it was a mentally and physically exhausting race for her
managed to score a sixth and fourth place respectfully on a track which was covered in dust and challenging rocks to navigate her way over
with Gardiner finishing second in the Super test
saying it was a nice way to get the ball rolling
The first day of racing on Saturday proved to be quite difficult for Gardiner
which marked her sixteenth race start in the FIM Enduro GP series
she lacked a bit of speed and crashed many times throughout the day which resulted her finishing in sixth place with a total time of 43min48.02
“I crashed nearly two times in a lot of the special tests and two times on every lap in the Enduro test,” explained Gardiner
who openly admitted that she had a really bad feeling as her mentality was just down
“It was just a really hard race as the trail was probably one of the hardest that existed in the world championships that the women do.”
Throughout the six heats during the race there pretty much wasn’t a moment Gardiner and her competitors were not in a rut
which proved it was a really just tough event
“Thankfully with my Funnel Web Air filters
I only needed to change one filter during the day
which shows just why they are best on the market as my Yamaha WR250F didn’t take in any dust
The Outsiders Yamaha Racing team and I will regroup tonight and hopefully come out stronger tomorrow,” Gardiner concluded at the end of day one
Heading into the second day of competition
all Gardiner wanted to do was to improve on her finishing order the day before and simply get back to where she really should be
who has previously raced in three Spanish GP’s (2013-14-15) had a much better of a day on Sunday
A total time of 42min55.09 was recorded for Gardiner
however the main thing was she had a much better feeling with her Yamaha WR250F in all of the tests which saw her posting the fourth quickest times in four out of the six heats
“Today was a much better day,” beamed Gardiner
“I managed to stay up on two wheels for the whole day
improve my times and finished a lot better than what I did on Saturday
So overall I can leave here in a much better frame of mind and head into round two of the Enduro GP with a bit more confidence
“It was still a very challenging day I admit
I don’t think I have pushed and pulled a motorcycle around like I did in a long time
I’m very happy with today’s outcome which is the main thing.”
Gardiner has confirmed that she will contest the remaining three rounds of the Women’s FIM Enduro GP World Championship with the Outsiders Yamaha Racing – Team Enduro
Gardiner will head into round two of the series in fifth place in the championship with 33-points to her name
The second round will take place at Parádfürdó in Hungary on 23-25 June
Next stop for Gardiner is this weekend for the opening round of the Enduro-European-Championship which will be staged at Gouveia in Portugal

Kaden Hopkins extended his strong start to to the new domestic cycling season in Spain with an encouraging performance in the La Vuelta Guadelentine race series
Fresh off the back of successive podium places ― following up victory in the season opening Interclubs Castalla Road Race in Alicante
with an encouraging third-place finish in the Vinalopó Interclub competition in Yelca ― the 21-year-old was hoping to build on that momentum in the three-day event
the elite under-23 team of the Sax Cycling Club
in the overall general classification with an accumulative time of 6hrs 58min 36secs
just 32 seconds adrift of winner Abel Balderstone Roumens
Hopkins was well in contention for a top-three finish after the first two days of racing
Having claimed a second-place finish in the opening time-trial
he went on to finish 12th in the road race to stay in third place in the general classification heading into the final day of competition
a 136 kilometre course in Puerto Lumbreras
Having endured a gruelling 400 plus feet of climbing
Hopkins battled his way to a creditable 22nd place
but well within the front pack of riders as they crossed the line
That ultimately saw him drop out of the top-ten but Hopkins would have been content with still claiming a highly respectable finish overall and continue his encouraging start to the domestic campaign

Children are among the dead as southern Spain is hit by torrential rain
Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player
At least 10 people have been killed and hundreds evacuated from their homes after flash floods swept through southern Spain
torrential rain has flooded streets and homes
and swept cars down roads that have been turned into rivers
The hardest hit areas are the Mediterranean provinces of Malaga in the south and Murcia and Almeria in the southeast
Regional officials said nine people have died and at least 600 people have been moved from their homes
Among the dead are a young boy and a girl who were found drowned in a car in the southeastern town of Puerto Lumbreras
which was badly damaged by an earthquake last year
A 52-year-old British woman is reportedly among those feared missing in Almeria
A regional government spokesman said: "In Malaga province
there are 800 staff working to return things to normal as quickly as possible
The rains are decreasing and seem to be shifting towards Granada and Almeri."
Up to 245 litres (65 gallons) of water per square metre (11 square feet) fell in the area on Friday morning alone
A flight was diverted to Seville as it headed to Malaga
which lies east of the resort city of Marbella on the Costa del Sol
At least two motorways have been closed and some public transport disrupted
The flooding comes after months of virtual drought and soaring summer temperatures all over Spain that triggered thousands of wildfires
a tornado swept through a fair ground in the main square of Gandia in Valencia
knocking down a ferris wheel and injuring 35 workers
Some 15 of the injured were seriously hurt
The storm damaged several rides and cut electricity to the site

The annual local fiestas are an important part of any Spanish village, town or city, and Puerto Lumbreras is no exception with a range of events
Among these some are common to the rest of the Region of Murcia
while others are unique to the municipality of Puerto Lumbreras
as is the case of the local holiday to commemorate independence from Lorca on 7th July and the Fiestas de Nuestra Señora del Rosario in October
As is the case almost everywhere in the Region of Murcia the week leading up to Easter Sunday in Puerto Lumbreras features various processions which
have come to transcend the Catholic faith and form part of the identity of the town
There are three brotherhoods responsible for these processions
the Cofradía del Santísimo Cristo de la Fé y María Santísima de la Piedad
the Cofradía de la Virgen de los Dolores and the Cofradía de Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno
The Thursday night procession is held in solemn silence (as it is in the regional capital)
and the Easter Sunday event is one of joy at the Resurrection
Click the following link for the 2017 Puerto Lumbreras Semana Santa program
which is representative of the format of Easter Week every year
Every summer during July and August the Town Hall of Puerto Lumbreras lays on a series of activities designed for both the local population and the tourists who flock to the Costa Cálida
events for children and a range of cultural activities
the program for these events does not follow a fixed schedule from year to year: instead
every spring the Town Hall produces a different set of activities which can be viewed in the What's on Puerto Lumbreras subject heading
This is a local holiday in Puerto Lumbreras to commemorate the municipality’s independence from Lorca in 1958
and various events are held to celebrate the day
Annual fiestas of Nuestra Señora del Rosario
The prologue to the annual fiestas in honour of Nuestra Señora del Rosario is the “Baile de la Reina”
which is held on one of the Saturdays of September and includes the naming of the year’s Fiestas Queen
But the main events take place in the first week of October
On this date the events include a Carnival-style float parade
an arts and crafts market and a floral offering to the Virgen del Rosario
as well as the procession of the figure of the devotee of the parish church through the streets of Puerto Lumbreras
In addition to these fiestas, there are local celebrations in the “pedanías” (outlying districts). These fall in August in Puerto Adentro and on and around 8th December in El Esparragal
which includes the village of La Estación

As the threat of torrential storms looms large in the Region of Murcia
with a red alert for possible downpours in place on 12th and 13th September and authorities cancellaing school and warning people to take precautions
it is worth checking how prone to flooding your particular area is on a fascinating "floodability" map compiled by the CHS water authority
The map clearly shows how in the east of the Region water runs off the flat land of the Campo de Cartagena towards the Mar Menor
as well as how the Guadalentín valley between Lorca and Puerto Lumbreras and the flood plain of the Segura are liable to being affected by floodwater
The map also goes into incredible detail as you enlarge the image
showing clearly how the streets of Puerto de Mazarrón are not served by adequate drainage in the Bahía area
while in nearby Bolnuevo the risk presented by the rambla
which overflowed disastrously almost excactly 30 years ago
Interestingly, the map of Cartagena reflects the area of land in the north of the city which is low-lying
having been reclaimed from the sea as the city expanded: the original peninsula on which the ancient cities of Qart Hadasht and Carthago Nova stood is relatively risk-free

The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212) if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre.
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell

A 52-year-old British woman has been reported missing in severe flooding which has so far claimed nine lives in southern Spain, authorities said today.
Hundreds of people have been evacuated from their homes after torrential rain led to flash flooding in the Andalucian provinces of Malaga, Almeria and Murcia.
The woman, who has yet to be named, was reported missing in Almeria, a spokeswoman for the regional government of Andalucia said.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office said it was looking into the reports as "a matter of urgency".
Heavy downpours and resulting high waters have killed five people in the province of Murcia, three in Almeria and one in Malaga. Five people originally declared missing had been found alive.
Jackie Broad, 58, said her home in Mojacar, Almeria, was too high up to be flooded but she had seen cars get washed away by raging torrents of water.
She said: "The river at the bottom of our road has burst its banks. There was a lot of water, in some places up to the roofs of shops and houses.
"The water has run away now but it's left about a foot of mud everywhere. A lot of the roads are closed so we're having trouble getting around."
Those who have died include two children who were found drowned in a car in Puerto Lumbreras in Murcia, Spanish national radio reported, while it said an elderly man was found dead near the town's cemetery.
The heavy rain started yesterday morning throughout Spain and follows months of drought and soaring summer temperatures which helped trigger thousands of wildfires.
Meanwhile, 35 people were injured when a tornado swept through a fairground and knocked down a Ferris wheel in Valencia last night.
The tornado damaged several rides and cut electricity at the temporary fair set up in the main square of Gandia, according to its town hall website. It said 15 of the injured were seriously hurt, all of whom were treated on site.

Many of the people detained and fined in Spain for breaking the lockdown restrictions have good cause to regret their actions
with heavy fines being used to punish civil disobedience during the national state of emergency
but a 22-year-old man in the province of Granada will be feeling especially remorseful after his defiance of the restrictions ended with him facing drug-related charges
The man concerned was stopped by the Guardia Civil and the Policía Local in Valderrubbio and was unable either to provide prove of his ID or to supply a valid reason for his being out in the streets
For this reason the officers accompanied him to his home
but when they arrived they noticed that the young man appeared unduly nervous and when they questioned him he admitted that inside he was tending to a marijuana plantation
on entering the officers found around 100 mature plants

The Murcia-Almería high-speed railway line is being constructed in Spain by Adif Alta Velocidad
Contratas y Ventas y Construcciones Sánchez Domínguez Sando
The Murcia-Almería high-speed railway project is an integral component of the Mediterranean High-Speed Corridor within the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T)
The project is being developed by Adif Alta Velocidad (AV)
a prominent developer of high-speed railways
Encompassing the construction of a 200km railway line
the project involves multiple sections and associated rail infrastructure
It is designed to support passenger trains travelling at speeds exceeding 250km per hour and freight trains at speeds up to 100km per hour
Partially funded by the European Union (EU), the initiative aims to forge a connection between the city of Almería and the Mediterranean corridor, as well as the high-speed line that extends from Madrid through Castile-La Mancha and the Valencian community to the region of Murcia
The new line will accommodate passenger trains and freight trains of up to 400m and 750m in length respectively
The development is projected to require an investment of €3.58bn ($3.94bn)
The Murcia-Almería high-speed railway project is being developed within the provinces of Almería
The Murcia-Almería high-speed railway line will comprise sections featuring both single and double tracks
The initiative also encompasses the electrification of the entire railway line
which will be fitted with a European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) Level 2 signalling system and advanced safety technology
the project’s development has been segmented into 17 sections between Almeria and Murcia
The contract for the project’s final section
involving the passage through Lorca which includes a 2.9km tunnel and the new Sutullena station in Lorca
The Lorca to Pulpí segment will consist of 31.3km of a double-track high-speed railbed
The section will repurpose 18.6km of the existing Iberian gauge non-electrified single track
The section also includes the construction of the Rincón tunnel
The 25.7km section between Pulpí and Vera will be a single-track line with an 8.5m-wide railbed for 22km
leading to the Vera-Almanzora passenger station
The remaining 3.7km from the station will be double-tracked with a 14m-wide railbed
The segment also includes the construction of ten viaducts
a pedestrian overpass and under and overpasses along the route
A new Vera-Almanzora station is set to be constructed close to the junction point of the Pulpí-Vera section
a 1.86km tunnel will be constructed to direct the line’s approach to the station from the existing El Puche tunnel
The line will connect on the surface level with the Almería station
A new intermodal station will also be constructed
The Almería station will be renovated and expanded while remaining above ground
The expansion will increase the surface coverage of the station by 4,800m² on two floors
A new 2,265m² bus station with 26 docks will also be constructed alongside the station’s secondary structure
The electrification phase of the project commenced in June 2023
It involves the construction of an electrical substation in Totana and autotransformation centres in Murcia
The European Regional Development Fund contributed €411m towards the construction of the Nonduermas-Vera and Los Arejos-El Puche sections
The European Commission approved the funding in August 2023
SAITEC secured the drafting contract for the Vera-Almanzora station in April 2023
won a contract valued at €171m ($191m) for the construction of the Lorca to Pulpí railway line section
The contract also encompasses the remodelling of the Pulpí and Puerto Lumbreras stations and the creation of a new station at Almendricos
including the construction of the Rincón tunnel
Ferrovial obtained a separate contract worth €121m in February 2019 to construct the railway line between Pulpí and Vera
A consortium comprising Contratas y Ventas and Construcciones Sánchez Domínguez Sando was awarded a contract worth €184m in August 2022 for the construction of the Totana-Totana section (Murcia)
Construction firm Sacyr was contracted to build the intermodal station at Almería
The Mediterranean Corridor is set to enhance rail capacity and operations
and reduce travel times between key cities along the route
It will render long-distance passenger services more frequent and dependable
The project is expected to improve interoperability and eliminate the need to transfer freight between trains at the Spanish-French border by adopting the standard gauge throughout the corridor
The Murcia-Almería high-speed rail line will offer improved rail connections to the corridor and facilitate the transportation of goods
it will create a new link from Almería to the heart of the Iberian Peninsula
The project will contribute to reducing emissions by encouraging a shift from road to high-speed railway transport
It will support sustainable development goals: promoting sustainable infrastructure
economic growth with job opportunities and energy efficiency

residents from other areas are not permitted to enter a red level municipality other than for essential reasons
the number of active covid cases in the Murcia Region was 4,497 and just a week later we are facing 9,234 active cases
according to the latest figures presented on Monday 11th January
The figures of the last week have yielded the highest single week since the pandemic began and there is no doubt that a third wave has abruptly erupted in the region
More than 76% of these new contagions are known to have originated through either leisure activity or in the domestic environment
or according to the spòkesman for the regional Covid Monitoring Committee
a combination of both; one family member contracting the virus through a social contact and then infecting their family at home
Once again the regional government is taking stringent measures to try and limit the spread of the contagions and on Monday announced that 36 municipalities would be confined and their bars prohibited from opening altogether from midnight on Monday
The whole region is now on phase 2 high alert level with the risk considered extreme
This means that residents from these 36 municipalities are not permitted to cross the borders of their municipality into another
residents from outside of these municipalities are not permitted to cross over into the confined municipalities other than for essential reasons
are NOT permitted to drive into Mazarrón to shop at the market even though Mazarrón is NOT CONFINED
This has left a "covid triangle" comprising Mazarrón
Alhama de Murcia and Totana in the centre of the region which are not confined
so residents of these three municipalities may move around freely within their "triangle" but may not enter the municipalities surrounding them
It also permits a further week of trading for bars and restaurants in these three municipalities so enjoy it while it lasts; the situation will be reviewed again next week
These are the 36 municipalities which are now confined: Moratalla
bars and restaurants are closed completely
day centres for the elderly have been closed
occupancy of any vehicle is limited to a maximum capacity of 50% (ie
a four seater vehicle may not transport more than 2 people) and occupancy is limited to 50% in theatres
with a maximum of 200 people for events inside and 500 outside
limit on the size of a group permitted to meet as 6 people and external regional perimeter border closure are maintained
Residents are NOT confined to their homes and may exercise and circulate without restriction within their municipality as long as masks are worn and social distancing maintained
This leaves only nine municipalities which are not confined: Aledo
The Region of Murcia is divided into 45 municipal areas
located in the largest urban town or city of the respective municipality
which does make it very confusing for foreign residents
The most confusing of all is Murcia City which lies within the municipality of Murcia
which also includes outlying districts in areas such as Sucina and Corvera
each of which has a district mayor and this in turn lies in the Region of Murcia
The map showing the Murcia municipality boundaries is below
ARCHIVED - 36 municipalities of Murcia Region in confinement from midnight" style="margin: 5px 10px 5px 0px; float: left" width="100%" />
Moratalla and Cartagena are huge and residents who live in these may move around freely within the municipality
so those who live in La Azohía in Cartagena can drive all the way to Los Urrutias on the shores of the Mar Menor
Google maps is an excellent tool to give a good idea of exactly what is within your own municipality, Click here for Google maps
Another alternative is to use the town search box on the header of www.murciatoday.com; by clicking on the name of your municipality in the drop-down list

Probably one of the biggest complaints from Camposol’s residents and homeowners over the years has been the lack of streetlighting in certain areas
an issue which has been raised at numerous meetings
Several technical reports have been carried out by Mazarrón Council and the absence of lighting has been variously attributed to circuits not installed or commissioned on original installation
cabling being damaged or stolen amd the thorny subject of lighting on internal (private) poligono roads being the responsibility of homeowners and owners' communities
Added to the list of problems was the cost
but this has to some extent been alleviated by the seizure
after 10 years fighting through the courts by Mazarrón Council
of 2.9 million euros in bank guarantees from the developer’s bank
where these funds are spent has had to be analysed closely by Council lawyers to avoid the bankruptcy administrator for developer Justo y Manoli SL (Grupo MASA) clawing back money not spent on projects mentioned in the reports submitted to the court
As announced in March by Mazarrón Mayor Gaspar Miras
Camposol has been included in project of streetlighting improvements throughout the municipality and work started on the replacement of non-functioning streetlights in Sector C (North) some weeks ago
The initial intent was to install solar-powered lighting but after a feasablity study by a specialised company it was found that the spacing of the lamp posts was such that it would prevent the roads and pavements being illuminated to EU specifications
It was therefore decided to replace defunct lights with new LED models
which although more expensive than the original lights are far cheaper on electricty and also more environmentally friendly
Work on the initial lighting circuits is now complete and they are in operation
Some residents have remarked that the illumination given off by the new LED lights has a warmer glow
not as harsh as the orange light given off by older low pressure sodium lamps
Council technicians and electrical contractors are assessing which areas and circuits to work on next

The following weekly markets are held in the Region of Murcia on Saturdays
although please note that some of these events may alter their schedules during the summer months or to co-incide with local fiestas
markets may be cancelled or altered due to bad weather and local or regional holidays: if in doubt
make enquiries at the local tourist office to avoid a wasted trip
As a general rule the weekly markets are open from 9.00 to 14.00
Open-air markets ar always popular with visitors
offering an opportunity to buy fresh produce and bargain clothes
Many also feature a range of products from plants and flowers to frying pans
baby clothes and electronic equipment: the larger the market
full of colour and noise as shoppers jostle for space
stand and socialize and generally enjoy the experience of shopping at a relaxed pace
choose stalls that have prices clearly marked and always ask for the receipt so you can check you've not been overcharged
Traders are obliged by law to give a receipt with a purchase
so don't be shy of asking for one if you feel the bill may not be correct
It's always advisable to check the bill and make sure that the correct price per kilo has been charged and the number of items you have corresponds to the receipt (in Spanish “ticket”)
Watch out for pickpockets: crowded areas such as markets tend to attract them all the world over
everyone does and that’s half the fun of it
If you intend to buy a reasonable amount of fruit and veg
it's worth investing in a shopping trolley which can be found in all "bazaar-type" stores
Taking your own plastic bags to recycle is also good for the environment
Abanilla - in the centre of Abanilla, in the Plaza de la Constitución
Archena - in the southern outskirts of the town, on Camino Pago Barranco (click for location)
